YAYASAN KHAZANAH OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

The Prestigious Awards For Bright And High-Achieving Malaysians

Kuala Lumpur, 18 June 2021 – Yayasan Khazanah, the scholarship arm of Yayasan Hasanah, today announced the opening of their annual Khazanah Global Scholarship and Khazanah Watan Scholarship Programme. These prestigious awards are targeted at Malaysians hoping to pursue their undergraduate studies through the A-level programme at Kolej Yayasan UEM as preparation for further studies at selected renowned universities abroad or at selected leading local universities.

Speaking on these scholarship announcement, Pn Shahira Ahmed Bazari, Board of Trustee at Yayasan Khazanah and Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah (the impact-based foundation of Khazanah Nasional Berhad) said that the foundation aims to equip Malaysians with educational opportunities to take the nation to greater heights. “Through the scholarships that we offer, we want to be able to provide bright and high-achieving Malaysians the opportunity to pursue their education in top universities around the world. We hope to continuously build and nurture future talents and leaders for Malaysia who are well equipped to serve the country and navigate the various 21 st century leadership challenges, including issues on sustainability, climate change and the future of work related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

Pn Shahira added that the announcement coincides with the recent announcement of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination results.

For Amos Tong, a scholar of the Khazanah Global Scholarship Programme who is currently pursuing Economics in the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the scholarship stood out to him because of its unparalleled range of support such as development programmes and leadership conferences as well as forums. “In a world that is getting more and more competitive every day, it is crucial that candidates excel academically and possess leadership skills. Fortunately for me, Yayasan Khazanah guides scholars like myself via programmes such as the Yayasan Khazanah Premier Scholars Programme (YKPSP) and job attachments,” said Amos.

The Khazanah Global Scholarship will be offering Malaysians a full scholarship to pursue their A-Level studies at Kolej Yayasan UEM as a preparation to pursue undergraduate studies at selected leading universities in the United Kingdom, United States or Australia. In addition to the financial support, this scholarship would also be offering applicants with leadership training and job attachments to help prepare them for a successful and accelerated path to leadership at leading organisations in Malaysia.

On the other hand, the Khazanah Watan Scholarship Programme will offer applicants the opportunity to pursue their Foundation or Undergraduate studies at selected leading local universities. Both these scholarships would require applicants to possess strong leadership skills and active participation in extra-curricular, social or voluntary activities as well as have a consistent and outstanding academic achievement record.

Ultimately, Yayasan Khazanah’s goal is to groom the future generation in order to transform and make substantial contributions to Malaysia’s Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) and other top organisations in the country or around the world. Moreover, the foundation also aims to fulfill the current talent gap in the country in a more holistic manner and provide myriad opportunities to those wanting to pursue their academic goals and dream jobs. To date, Yayasan Khazanah has awarded over 505 Global Scholarships and 296 Watan Scholarships to deserving Malaysians.

Both applications will be available online and interested applicants can apply through a link provided in Yayasan Khazanah’s website. Applications for the Khazanah Global Scholarship and Khazanah Watan Scholarship Programme will be open from 11 to 30 June 2021.

The Yayasan Khazanah (YK) Scholarship is known for only accepting the cream of the crop.

In March of 2022, Arianna Saiful , received coveted success in the final stage of the Yayasan Khazanah Early Harvest scholarship application.

A Kolej Yayasan Saad student and receiver of the KYS Founder’s Award in 2020 , Arianna was also the Secretary of the Prefectorial Board (2021), Editor-in-Chief of Cemerlang (2019-2021), Assistant Secretary of the Debating Union (2021) and President of Girl Guides (2020).

She will continue her pre-university studies in Kolej Yayasan UEM , Lembah Beringin, undertaking the A Levels programme with her subjects being Mathematics, Economics, English Literature and History. She also aims to attend Oxford University for Law.

Arianna is most known for her achievements as a debater among her peers. In an interview with Cemerlang, she explained that she already had public speaking experience prior to joining the KYS Debate Team.

Debate is where she developed useful communication skills and the art of persuasion.

Creating a schedule or a study plan is important to prepare for any examination. For Arianna, being interested in the subject is key to understanding it, which is essential to score in the examinations.

“I’ve never believed in overloading our minds with information everyday.”

Light studying but doing so consistently can avoid one from having to burn the midnight oil studying at the last minute. Arianna generally knew what to study according to the days with extra focus on her weaker subjects such as additional mathematics, accounts and history. She also warned of the danger of burning yourself out.

Writing your own notes was also what she did, especially for “bigger” subjects such as history and economics where memory retention of the materials was key. Writing the notes in your “own words” can help with understanding.

Applying for Yayasan Khazanah Scholarship

Before the five stages of the YK Scholarship, there is the application process . During this process, being authentic and figuring out what makes you unique from the rest is of upmost importance.

Arianna stated that YK or any other scholarship body, emphasises on both academic performance and extra-curricular activities. It is important to have a balance between the two, which would demonstrate us as being able to manage our time well and productively.

Arianna recommends participating in established extra-curricular activities such as debate or going for a more niche club or society that is impactful.

For example, Arianna also spent time in Project ID , an organisation that aims to develop student leaders through a series of high impact activities. Its vision is to improve the socio-economic status of underserved communities in Malaysia through education.

Essay writing is another aspect of the application process that one needs to be prepared for. One can use the essay to demonstrate knowledge and reveal his or her values as a person.

In the Khazanah essay, one can mention his or her experiences in the extra-curricular activities or academics journey and relate them to the field he or she wants to pursue in the future.

In Arianna’s case, she mentioned her experience moderating Cemerlang’s Career Launchpad Webinar featuring lawyers and their experiences in the profession to showcase her interest in becoming a lawyer.

“You have to use those experiences and show how they have shaped you as a person.”

While it is important to have many experiences from various activities, prioritise sharing those that can show added value to your desired field of study.

Stages 1 and 2

yayasan khazanah scholarship essay

If the scholarship body like what they read, you will make it through to the first stage. In the second stage, you will sit for five online tests on your mathematics, English comprehension as well as your IQ and personality.

Mathematics and English comprehension are pretty straightforward and the IQ test is very similar to Mensa. The most important aspect of the two personality tests is to be truthful with your answers. You do not have to portray yourself as a perfect human being, but show some qualities which you feel strongly about yourself.

“Be your best self, but be truthful”.

Scholarship bodies and their officers have years of experience in evaluating scholarship applicants. You can try to exaggerate your achievements, but they will be able to call you out.

The third stage is an individual interview on competency where the interviewers will ask the applicants questions regarding their experiences. For example, “tell us an experience where you showed a moral value “, “tell us about failures you have faced” and “tell us an experience about you showing integrity”.

The fourth stage is a group interview where the officers will ask only one question. Arianna said that it is not something that you can actually prepare beforehand. During her interview, she was asked to tell them about herself.

Share your ideals, personal traits, anything at all that can make you stand out from the rest of the applicants. Additionally, structuring your thoughts, and being able to go in-depth in explaining real world issues is important to show that you genuinely care about what’s happening around you.

Reading news to keep yourself updated with current issues is essential.

The fifth or final stage was another interview where Arianna was grouped with five other applicants to demonstrate her capabilities.

To stand out during the introduction part of the interview, Arianna sang a song in French, Japanese and English. The point was to really mean what she wrote in the last part of her application essay where she explained that her biggest strength is defying social norms.

“Action speaks louder than words”

The interview was followed by critical thinking questions such as “what are key areas that the nation should be investing in for the betterment of society, what course should you take to better help the nation and how we can better balance out environmental sustainability and at the same time managing the industrial progress for our country”.

Questions about the country, should be answered carefully as to not appear to be ideologically too left or right-wing. Be as positive and neutral as possible.

Furthermore, during the group interview, it is important to be a team player. Be professional and respectful to the other applicants by not trying to undermine them in any way.

Simply acknowledge their comments without copying them. It is always good to provide a response, build upon their ideas or even provide a different perspective.

“A team player who can also thrive independetly is the type of person that Yayasan Khazanah wants as their scholar”.

A ‘base’ to secure scholarships

KYUEM celebrates stellar A-Level success

Three malaysians enter harvard university, kyuem students aim for the world’s top universities.

BASE Initiative, which has held numerous workshops and talks through the years, aims to create awareness about the types of scholarships available to school leavers and how to secure them.

MANY Malaysian students dream of one thing: to be fully funded for higher education at the university of their dreams, especially overseas. Securing a scholarship, however, is difficult when one is not quite sure how to go about it.

With this realisation, and to assist students who received their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia results last Thursday, scholars have come together to create awareness and help make the scholarship application process easier for students nationwide.

Founded by four Yayasan Khazanah scholars in 2019, BASE, an initiative that stands for “Basic Aid for your Scholarship Essentials”, provides guidance on resume building, essay writing, tips for acing interviews, and more.

It also provides helpful tips from scholars with the experience of applying for scholarships from Bank Negara Malaysia, Yayasan Sime Darby and Mara, among others.

Its latest event, which kicked off yesterday, and ends today at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, features sessions with scholars sharing their experiences and tips with Form Five school-leavers on how to secure scholarships, addressing concerns about scholarship applications, and providing explanations on the different interview stages.

In the past few months, BASE has reached out to upper secondary school students across the country.

As part of its outreach efforts, some 337 students have taken part in virtual workshops on how scholarships work and the types available, as well as resources to boost their academic profiles and interests.

BASE outreach manager Ahmad Syahmi Al-Zambri, who is a Khazanah scholar, said the initiative showed him it was possible to secure scholarships on the advice of those who had successfully secured funding.

“We want to pay it forward so more Malaysians are inspired to go after their academic goals.”

He said workshops where scholars shared their personal experiences and advice on applications after SPM 2021 were very helpful.

“Collaborations with other organisations have proven very fruitful for the initiative, as they provide upskilling opportunities to students who may not be exposed to quality co-curricular activities.

“This includes a research-based article writing programme in collaboration with Kolej Yayasan UEM’s Research Institute.

“Students were guided in teams to do literature reviews and write articles on their fields of interest.”

This year, BASE is led by Sara Surayan, with the goal of making the initiative more accessible to students who need assistance, especially high-potential ones who may go under the radar due to a gap in information.

“We aim to make BASE a conducive platform for high achievers and those who lack the support from schools. At the end of the day, the application process to various sponsoring bodies can be nerve-wracking, one that requires a lot of soul-searching and finding a purpose for yourself, your community and the nation.

“We want to extend a hand to help students achieve that level of introspection, in order to better navigate their tertiary education,” she said in a press release.

The scholarship is aimed at filling the talent gap in the country in a more holistic manner by providing myriad opportunities to those wanting to pursue academic and executive enrichment programmes on sustainability development. Speaking on the Khazanah Lestari Scholarship Programme, Shahira Ahmed Bazari, Board of Trustee at Yayasan Khazanah and Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah (the impact-based foundation of Khazanah Nasional Berhad) said that the organisation was proud to be contributing towards the national agenda by increasing accessibility to fields of study that would be critical to the nation’s future success and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. “As we progress into the 21st century, it is becoming increasingly clear that there are certain sets of skills, competencies and industries that are needed to navigate future challenges like climate resilience, big data and artificial intelligence, and a new economic and social paradigm.”

This post-graduate scholarship will support the tuition fees, living allowance, a round trip economy class ticket, medical insurance, and alumni & network support for eligible applicants.
