Wayne State Secondary Application Tip #1: Located in Detroit, Michigan, Wayne State School of Medicine values applicants who are invested in community health and urban health.

Wayne State Secondary Application Tip #2: In our opinion, all physicians are leaders because patients and the medical team look to them to lead patient cases in the hospital. In the question, “ What characteristics and qualities are necessary for successful leadership? Do you think all physicians should be leaders? Please discuss your reasons ,” you can build on your reasons WHY physicians should or should not be leaders. Some students we work with through our medical school application packages are able to squeeze in a physician mentor they look up to or an example of a time when a physician led a medical team that inspired them. Then, they link that story with the characteristics of successful leadership. Because of Wayne State’s commitment to urban health & community health, giving an example of how you’ve been a leader in your community is a great idea!

Wayne State Secondary Application Tip #3: To answer the question, “ Which of your experiences or activities align with WSU SOM’s mission? Please discuss how. “

  • First, read about Wayne State University’s mission: https://wayne.edu/about/mission
  • Second, read more specifically about Wayne State University School of Medicine’s mission: https://wayne.edu/about/mission . • Third, when you write your essay, note that there is an emphasis in the Wayne State School of Medicine mission about urban settings. Ideally, you should discuss how you are interested in urban health and community health.
  • Fourth, you can paint a picture of how you see your career embodying the Wayne State Medical School mission in the future, such as being an urban physician who promotes inclusion for all individuals in the community.

Wayne State Secondary Application Tip #4: When thoughtfully planned, you can add multiple stories throughout the Wayne State secondaries. For example, if you were involved in a community health or community service project during your gap year, tell a story about a challenge you faced or a patient you met while conducting a clinical trial.

Wayne State Secondary Application Tip #5:  After reading your entire Wayne State Medical School secondary application, the reader should understand: how are you committed to improving your community? Emphasize your commitment to community service and community health.

Wayne State Secondary Application Tip #6: It is important to do your research on the Wayne State University School of Medicine . Reference specific aspects the curriculum, projects, and community organizations you want to be involved with.
