Statement of Purpose (SOP) Guidelines

Your Statement of Purpose (SOP) for the School of Biological Sciences (BioSci) Ph.D. Program should address the topics below in 1500 words or less (total for entire SOP) . Organize your document with the following three sections (put the stated header at the top of each section):

Header #1: Motivation to earn a Ph.D.

Your goal for this section: Explain why you want to get a Ph.D. in biological sciences. As one part of your answer, identify the question or phenomenon in biology that you find most exciting and explain what it is about this question that interests you and how you came to be interested in it.

Header #2: Previous research experience

Your goal for this section: Describe your previous research experience. Depending on how many different research experiences or projects you have had, you may not have space to fully describe them all. In that case, focus in detail on the ones that impacted your intellectual and scientific development the most, and you can mention any others briefly. You can assume you are writing to a biologist, but your description must be understandable to a reader who is not an expert in the specific field of your research. Be sure to include the following information:

What research question did you set out to answer?
What is the context for this question and why is it interesting, important, and/or useful?
How did you address this question?
What were your findings?
What insights or knowledge did you gain from this research experience?

Sample Statement of Purpose Ph.D. Cancer Research

I belong to Grushevka, a remote Northern area of Ukraine. Over the years, I have seen how diseases such as deafness, dumbness, mental retardation, hair-related disorders, and cancer have caused widespread miseries for the local inhabitants. Since my childhood days, the agony of their life touched my heart, but I could not do anything for them except spare some time to make them happy. However, during those childhood days, I made a vow to myself to play my part in the fight against diseases that are prevalent in my hometown.

When I started studying biology, I found an avenue that could help me to fulfill my dream. I decided to work on genetic disorders while pursuing my Master’s. During my Master’s, I selected cancer Biology as my area of interest. I studied subjects related to signaling involved in humans, including “Advances in Molecular Genetics,” “Advances in Molecular Biology,” and “Molecular Mechanisms of diseases.” These subjects gave me a strong foundation in Molecular biology, which helped me to pursue research in human genetic disorders. Since my preferred area of interest (Cancer Biology) was unavailable in this lab, I worked on “Mapping Genes Involved in Hereditary Hypotrichosis.” During the research program, I was trained in Molecular biology techniques, including PCR, Electrophoresis, DNA Sequencing and analysis, and others.

Cancer has become the leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. Breast and ovarian cancer worsen due to early marriages, frequent pregnancies, lack of pre and post-pregnancy care, malnutrition, and a high rate of consanguineous marriages. Estimates suggest that about 80% of breast and 90% of ovarian cancers are sporadic. Only 5% to 10% of breast cancers are hereditary. Many mutated genes play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of different cancers, including APC, BRAC1, BRCA2, and B-catenin, causing colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. According to a reported study, 55%- 65% of women with BRCA1 mutations are at a high risk of breast cancer. According to a WHO report, breast cancer is the most common type in females, affecting females in 145 countries, causing 14% of cancer-related death worldwide and causing the death of 3.3 million women worldwide.

Moreover, it is a severe health threat in countries like Ukraine, with two million deaths in only Europe. In Ukraine, breast and ovarian cancer will be an epidemic, with 1 case per 9 women. However, according to the IARC, only registered cases included 19,271 breast cancer cases and 10,376 breast cancer deaths. Moreover, in contradiction to international trends, in Ukraine, young women aged between 20 to 35 years report breast cancer more frequently, instead of 40 onwards. Due to these alarming figures for the whole country, I have set an ambitious goal to beat and make a difference in the fight against cancer.

For the last decade, I have dreamed of working on applied oncology to eradicate the disease-mediated miseries in Ukraine, particularly in my native areas. I am enthusiastic about pursuing Ph.D. in the subject of cancer biology. Through this research program, I could study the biochemical processes and signaling cascades involved in the underlying disease pathology. I am also looking forward to learning about cancer cells’ intercellular and intracellular atmosphere and how cancer cells metastasize at the molecular level. I also hope to find novel therapeutics as a remedy against the disease, like nanoparticles, proteins that can work as inhibitors of cancer proteins, or RNAi-based silencing of affected genes involved in cancers.

Once I am equipped with these techniques and subject knowledge, I can train the students in my areas at the graduate and research levels. Ukraine has the resources, but a significant barrier is a need for qualified researchers. There is already a university in my native area but it lacks research laboratories and a trained workforce. Therefore, I wish to educate the coming generations and to work for disease-suffering families.

Academic Background

Applicants should have a record of introductory courses in chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics. While the following courses should not be regarded as prerequisites for admission to graduate study, most admitted students have completed these courses as undergraduates:

Biology (at least one general course in biology and two terms of biology at a more advanced level)
Biochemistry
Organic chemistry
Physical chemistry
Physics (a general course)
Mathematics (a basic knowledge of differential and integral calculus). Competence in elementary programming is also desirable.
Laboratory in biology, biochemistry, or instrumental analysis.

Statement of Purpose

Describe your reasons and motivations for pursuing a graduate degree in your chosen degree program, noting the experiences that shaped your research ambitions, indicating briefly your career objectives and concisely stating your past work in your intended field of study and in related fields. Your statement should not exceed 1,000 words.

In addition to the above guidance, your statement of purpose should also address the following questions:

The focus of this question should be a discovery in which you had substantial engagement and personal impact on the research. Do not reference a large group project simply because it was interesting.
If you have not had significant research experience, please describe a scientific discovery that motivated you to pursue research.
Using simple language, describe what you or others did, why, and what it means.

We admit students in the fall semester, with the goal of providing a collegial, intimate, and intellectually vibrant learning environment. Your application will be viewed by several professors in our department, including faculty knowledgeable in your area of interest. We use a holistic selection process, valuing your experiences and interests.

Each year we matriculate ten to twelve new candidates to our doctoral program. You can apply to our Ph.D. program through the Duke Graduate School. See the Graduate School website for procedures and deadlines.

Application Fee

The Graduate School provides a limited number of application fee waivers to promote a diverse applicant pool. All fee waiver requests are reviewed by the Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Development in the Office of Graduate Student Affairs. In addition, all U.S. applicants from under-represented groups and anyone with a demonstrated financial need are encouraged to contact the Co-Director of Graduate Studies, William Morris ( [email protected] ). The Biology Department will help defray the cost of the application fee.

Before applying to Biology, please be sure it is the department of the labs you are interested in. For example, if you are interested in Dr. Jane Doe’s lab, but she is in Duke’s Department of Neurobiology, and you apply to Duke Biology, your application will get misdirected. We recognize that every application is more than just the sum of quantitative measures like GPAs, and have implemented a holistic review process that takes into account not only your academic credentials, but your profile as a whole. Applicants to the Duke Biology Ph.D. program will be evaluated on the basis of the following information provided in your application:

Your Statement of Purpose
Your research experience
Your letters of recommendation
The match of your research interests to the expertise of faculty in the department
Your performance in the courses you have taken that prepared you for graduate study

Statement of Purpose

Tell us about your previous research experience, work ethic and perseverance toward goals, your preparedness and motivation for graduate study, your academic plans, including some of the research questions you would like to address in your graduate studies, and future career aspirations. In your statement, it is very important to mention which faculty members you are interested in working with, as common interests are considered.

You are encouraged to include examples of educational, cultural, or other life opportunities or challenges you have experienced, and how these are likely to contribute to your overall success in our graduate program and beyond.

The Duke Graduate School requires that you submit your undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) with your application. Duke does not have a cut-off point for UGPA when considering applicants. The Biology Graduate Admissions Committee will examine how your academic background, including the courses you have taken previously and your performance in those courses, and not your GPA or the institutions at which you have previously studied, have prepared you for graduate study. Every application gets reviewed in a holistic way in which all parts of the application package are considered in making a decision.

Both the general GRE and the GRE Biology subject test are optional for applicants to the Duke Biology Ph.D. program. Not having taken these tests will in no way disadvantage your application.

Applications are due November 30 . The Biology Graduate Admissions Committee will contact those applicants who qualify for on-site interviews (applicants already in the US) or Skype interviews (international applicants) by mid-January. We invite select candidates to visit the Duke campus for one of two planned weekends in February to meet our faculty and graduate students. Final decisions are made in March.

Graduate School Statement of Purpose Tips

Not sure what the statement of purpose in the BE PhD application is supposed to look like? You’ve come to the right place. Let’s break it down.

The two most important questions to answer in your personal statement are:

What have I done during my time as an undergraduate and afterward to prepare myself for being a Biological Engineering PhD Student?
How do I show I am a good fit for the BE program specifically at MIT?

Let’s start with some tips on addressing the first point – your past experiences and preparation for a PhD program:

Your personal statement should describe your most important previous research experience(s) in depth. For those who have worked in several labs, discuss only those experiences which were the most relevant to your scientific journey. For those who have only worked in one lab, do not panic, that is completely okay! Either way, just make sure to describe both what you accomplished during your research and what you learned in the process. What you learned in the process should emphasize either transferable technical skills you picked up, such as writing well-organized code, or research “soft skills” that you gained, such as working independently or collaboratively. Frequent approaches to talking about previous research with a compelling narrative include discussing a challenge you overcame and what you took away from it, discussing a moment of failure and how you moved forward, or discussing a moment that brought you joy to be doing research. You can spend multiple paragraphs addressing previous research. Also, feel free to mention if any patents or publications came out of your work (and it’s completely fine if not).
If your transcript does not include both fundamental biology and quantitative coursework, discuss how you have demonstrated competency in the missing area. It is usually best to leave your coursework to your transcript unless there are one or two advanced courses you feel had a large impact on your research interests. However, if you haven’t had any fundamental biology courses (like biochemistry or cellular biology), describe ways (e.g. online courses, reading, or research) that you have gained an understanding of how biological systems operate. Similarly, if your transcript does not include courses with significant quantitative components (such as ODEs, introductory programming, probability and statistics, or thermodynamics), discuss how you’ve supplemented your coursework with quantitative material.

Okay now for the trickier part. How do you show you are a good fit for Biological Engineering specifically at MIT? Here are some tips:

Your personal statement should show that your goals align with the MIT BE mission to further knowledge at the interface of biology and engineering. The MIT Biological Engineering graduate admissions committee wishes to know how you plan to fuse an understanding of how biological systems work (especially at the molecular and cellular levels) with engineering approaches (such as mathematical modeling, computation, and/or hands-on design) in order to measure, model, manipulate, make, or quantitatively analyze biological systems in novel ways for societal benefit.
Your personal statement should describe your research interests moving forward, and should discuss how they tie into the research people in the department currently do. It is recommended you specifically mention at least two (preferably three) professors with whom you would be interested in working. Rather than saying you are “generally interested in biological engineering,” discuss specific examples of subdisciplines (or even sub-subdisciplines) you would like to work in, such as “mammalian synthetic biology,” “cancer immunotherapy,” or “neurological drug delivery.” Make sure to describe why you are interested in these subdisciplines. It is often helpful to give examples of specific scientific questions you would like to answer or engineering challenges you would like to work on. Tying these ideas to work currently being done in the department/program will make them much more impactful. These interests may easily change while you are in the program, but it is still important to show you have identified and reflected upon the research directions you most likely want to pursue. Additionally, not all the faculty members you mention must be doing exactly what you are interested in so long as you can explain how your research interests fit with theirs.

Finally, here are a few miscellaneous tips to polish it off:

Your personal statement should emphasize how your previous experiences will help you achieve the scientific goals you’ve described. Basically, when you read back over your statement, it should be clear how what you’ve done in the past makes you qualified to do what you want in the future. It’s okay if you still have many skills you need to pick up on the way! That’s expected. It’s also okay if you don’t want to do the same thing in grad school as you did in/after undergrad (that’s extremely common). Just make sure to at some point explain how what you previously worked on makes you a good candidate for researching the kind of things you want in the future. This could include technical skills (e.g. you now want to apply machine learning to immunology rather than neuroscience) or soft skills (e.g. your comfort with independently designing experimental protocols will be helpful for making new methods for performing cellular measurements). Sentences addressing this point can be peppered throughout the narrative, or you can section off a paragraph for it, but make sure it goes in a logical place.
At the end, your personal statement should very briefly discuss long-term career goals and research visions. There is no right answer, and there are no expectations that you would know now, but best guesses are helpful. This can just be one to two sentences. And you don’t have to say that you want to be a professor unless that is something you think you might want to do!
Your personal statement should be no more than 2 pages (single-spaced). Them’s the rules.

How to Write a Statement of Purpose for PhD Admission

The dreaded doctoral statement of purpose — every PhD program asks for it, but why is it so difficult to write? Writing a strong statement of purpose is essential to getting into your top PhD programs. A PhD statement of purpose gives admissions committees an introduction to your research interests and why their specific program is of interest to you.

Like a cover letter for a job application, a great statement of purpose allows you to highlight your strengths, interests and experience. If you need statement of purpose advice, keep reading for guidance on how to write a successful statement of purpose that will make your PhD application stand out.

Statement of purpose vs. personal statement

Though the two may sound similar, they’re not necessarily interchangeable. A personal statement gives insight into who you are, while a statement of purpose is meant to showcase what you want to do. Rarely will you be asked to write a personal statement for a PhD program.

As you go through the PhD application process, you will likely see schools requesting either a statement of purpose or a research statement. In most cases, they're both looking for the same thing. Admissions committees want to know about your academic background, your research goals and what you hope to accomplish as a candidate in a PhD program.

Your research goals should align with faculty research

Being admitted to a PhD program is a great feeling, but if you enroll in a program that doesn’t match your research interests or help support your career goals, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment later down the road.

Applying for admission to a program is all about fit. Faculty reviewers are looking for students who best represent the department’s mission and will help them obtain their research objectives.

By the time you apply, you should have a solid understanding of what the department’s primary research and content areas are, as well as which faculty members you’d like to work with more closely. This might mean finding information about what their labs do and reading published articles related to their work.

Be sure to include how your interests and past experiences align with the work that they do and how you would be an active contributor to those endeavors. This approach shows that you took the time to look into their program, so the committee will be more willing to invest theirs in reviewing your application.

Don’t be afraid to address your weaknesses

Many people assume they should avoid listing their shortcomings in their essays. The whole point of applying to a program is to impress the reviewers, right? But constructively addressing your weaknesses can be a great way to demonstrate how this program can help you achieve your academic goals.

Look at the catalog and read through the courses that are part of the program. If there is a particular class that fascinates you, talk about how it could help you obtain a new skill or a better understanding of a concept that you’ve struggled with before.

This demonstrates that you are actively seeking programs to help you better your education. It also exhibits that you’re mindful of what areas of your knowledge need some improvement, which shows maturity and the ability to self-assess.

Keep it succinct

If your program of interest does not specify a page word or word limit, it’s best to assume that your statement should not exceed two pages total. It should be enough to give them a glimpse of who you are and what you have to offer but not share your life story.

The aim is to communicate how and why this particular program will help you meet your academic and career goals. Limited space means you must prioritize what you include in your statement.

Create an outline before you start writing to ensure you are including points that are relevant to your application and the program to which you are applying. Your statement is also an example of how well you can write. By framing your essay before you write it, you can avoid stream-of-consciousness writing that can often come across as undefined and incoherent.

Proofread! And read it over and over

When you think you have a finished product, read your essay out loud. This makes it easier to catch typos, poor grammar, and oddly worded sentences. If you have a friend who is also applying to grad school, help each other out by editing each other’s essays.

Having someone else read your statement and ask questions can help you clarify your points and make it more compelling. Your statement is your one chance to present yourself professionally in your own words. The occasional mistake is excusable, but messy writing will make them think you lack attention to detail.

Before you hit submit on that application, be sure that you have attached the correct document for the right institution. It can be very embarrassing if your statement mentions the wrong faculty member’s name or refers to another school’s library! It could also cause the reviewers to think you are not as serious about their program.

You’ve spent a good amount of time perfecting your application, so take your time to review everything before you submit it so you can rest easy knowing you’ve presented your best.

Simply repeating these details in your statement does not add any value to your application and can be redundant.

The Graduate School Statement of Purpose: An Overview

A statement of purpose (also called a letter of intent or a research statement) introduces your interests and experience to the admissions committee. For research-focused programs, like most PhDs and many master’s degrees, your statement of purpose will focus primarily on your past research experience and plans. For more professionally-focused graduate programs, your statement of purpose will primarily discuss how your pursuit of this professional program relates to your past experiences, and how you will use the skills from the program in your future career.

A statement of purpose for grad school is also where you sell the admissions committee on why you belong in their program specifically. Why do you fit there, and how does what they offer fit your interests?

What’s in a Great Grad School Statement of Purpose?

Here are the essential elements of a strong graduate school statement of purpose:

Clear Articulation of Goals and Interests

A strong statement of purpose will clearly and specifically lay out your goals in undertaking the program and what you hope to accomplish with the degree. Again, for a research-focused program, this will focus primarily on the research project(s) you want to undertake while you are there. For a more professional program, discuss what interests you within the professional field and what skills/knowledge you hope to gain through the program.

You should be as specific as possible in discussing what interests you. Use examples of particular phenomena, tools, or situations that you find exciting. If you are vague or say that everything in the field interests you, you run the risk of seeming unfocused or not actually that passionate.

Don’t worry that being too specific will box you into a particular research area or subfield during your entire tenure in graduate school. Your program understands that interests change—they won’t be pulling out your research statement to cross-reference with your dissertation proposal!

Evidence of Past Experience and Success

A great graduate school statement of purpose will also show programs that you have already been successful. They want applicants that will be able to follow through on their research/professional plans!

To this end, you’ll need to provide evidence of how your background qualifies you to pursue this program and your specific interests in the field. You’ll probably discuss your undergraduate studies and any professional experience you have. But be sure to draw on specific, vivid examples. You might draw on your thesis, major projects you’ve worked on, papers you have written/published, presentations you’ve given, mentors you’ve worked with, and so on. This gives admissions committees concrete evidence that you are qualified to undertake graduate study!

Interest and Fit With the Program

The third essential ingredient to a great statement of purpose is to clearly lay out why you and the program are a good fit. You should be able to identify both specific reasons why your work fits with the program and why the program suits your work/interests! Are there particular professors you’d like to work with? Does the department have a strong tradition in a certain methodology or theory you’re interested in? Is there a particular facet to the curriculum that you’d like to experience?

Showing that you and the program are a match shows that you chose the program thoughtfully and have genuine interest in it. Programs want to admit students who aren’t just passionate about the field. They want students who are genuinely enthused about their specific program and positioned to get the most out of what they have to offer.

Strong Writing

The final essential piece of a strong statement of purpose or letter of intent is strong writing. Writing skills are important for all graduate programs. You’ll need to demonstrate that you can clearly and effectively communicate your ideas in a way that flows logically. Additionally, you should show that you know how to write in a way that is descriptive but concise. A statement of purpose shouldn’t ever be longer than two pages, even without a hard word limit.

Admissions committees for humanities programs may be a little more focused on writing style than admissions officers for STEM programs. But even in quantitative and science-focused fields, written communication skills are an essential part of graduate school. So a strong statement of purpose will always be effectively written. Real, Successful Statement of Purpose Samples

In this section, we’ll present four successful graduate school statement of purpose examples from our graduate school experts, along with a brief commentary on each statement. These statements come from a diverse selection of program types to show you how the core essentials of a statement of purpose can be implemented differently for different fields.

Note: identifying information for these statements have been changed—except for example four, which is my statement.

Statement of Purpose Sample One: Japanese Studies MA

This statement of purpose is notable for its great use of space and its vivid descriptions. The author is able to cram a lot into about a page. She discusses how she came to her two primary research interests (and how they are connected). She integrates this discussion of her interests with information on her past experiences and qualifications for pursuing the course of study. Finally, she includes details on her goals in pursuing the program and components of the program that interest her. Her examples are specific and fleshed-out. There’s a lot very cleverly included in a small amount of page space!

Additionally, the language is very vivid. Phrases like “evocative and visceral” and “steadily unraveling,” are eye-catching and intriguing. They demonstrate that she has the writing skills necessary to pursue both graduate study and her interest in translation.

Statement of Purpose Sample Two: Music MM

This sample is fairly long, although at 12 point Times New Roman it’s under two pages single-spaced. The length of this statement is partially due to the somewhat expansive nature of the prompt, which asks what role music has played in the applicant’s life “to date.” This invites applicants to speak more about experiences further in the past (in the childhood and teen years) than is typical for a statement of purpose. Given that this is for a master’s degree in music, this is logical; musical study is typically something that is undertaken at a fairly young age.

This statement does an excellent job describing the student’s past experiences with music in great detail. The descriptions of the student’s past compositions and experiences performing new music are particularly vivid and intriguing.

This statement also lays out and elaborates on specific goals the student hopes to pursue through the program, as well as features particular to the program that interest the student (like particular professors).

Statement of Purpose Sample Three: Economics PhD

One of the first things you’ll likely notice about this statement is that it’s a little on the longer side. However, at 12 point Times New Roman font and single-spaced, it still comes in under 2 pages (excluding references). It makes sense for a PhD statement of purpose sample to be longer than a master’s degree statement of purpose—there’s more to lay out in terms of research interests!

The writing style is fairly straightforward—there’s definitely a stronger focus on delivering content than flashy writing style. As Economics is a more quantitative-focused field, this is fine. But the writing is still well-organized, clear, and error-free.

The writer also gives numerous examples of their past work and experience, and shows off their knowledge of the field through references, which is a nice touch.

Statement of Purpose Sample Four: History of the Book MA

This is actually my statement of purpose. It was for a program that I got accepted to but did not end up attending, for a Master’s in the History of the Book. You’ll notice that the two essay prompts essentially asked us to split our statement of purpose into two parts: the first prompt asked about our research interests and goals, and the second prompt asked about our relevant experience and qualifications.

I’ll keep my comments on this graduate school statement of purpose sample brief because I’ll do a deep dive on it in the next section. But looking back at my statement of purpose, I do a good job outlining what within the field interests me and clearly laying out how my past experiences have qualified me for the program.

Obviously this statement did its job, since I was accepted to the program. However, if I were to improve this statement, I’d change the cliche beginning (“since I was a child”) and provide more specificity in what about the program interested me.

Deep Dive Analysis of a Sample Statement of Purpose for Graduate School

Next, we’ll do a paragraph by paragraph analysis of my statement, statement of purpose sample four. I’ll analyze its strengths and suggest ways I could shore up any weaknesses to make it even stronger.

Essay 1: Academic Interests

To refresh, here’s the first prompt: Please give a short statement that describes your academic interests, purpose, objectives and motivation in undertaking this postgraduate study. (max 3500 chars – approx. 500 words)

Paragraph 1

Since I was a child, my favorite thing has always been a book. Not just for the stories and information they contain, although that is a large part of it. Mostly, I have been fascinated by the concept of book as object—a tangible item whose purpose is to relate intangible ideas and images. Bookbindings and jackets, different editions, the marginalia in a used book—all of these things become part of the individual book and its significance, and are worth study and consideration. Books and their equivalent forms—perfect bound, scrolled, stone tablets, papyrus—have long been an essential part of material culture and are also one of our most significant sources of information about the human historical past. Through both the literal object of the book, the words contained thereon, and its relationship to other books—forms of context, text and intertext—we are able to learn and hopefully manage layers of information with which we would otherwise have no familiarity.

First, the good: this paragraph does a good job introducing my academic interest in the book-as-object, and shows off pre-existing knowledge both of the study of material culture and literary theory. Additionally, the language is engaging: the juxtaposition of “tangible” and “intangible” in the beginning and phrases like “perfect bound, scrolled, stone tablets, papyrus” lend life to the writing and keep the reader engaged.

If I were to go back and improve this paragraph, first, I would absolutely change the first sentence to something less cliche than talking about my childhood. I might try something like “My love of books is a multifaceted thing. I don’t only love them for the stories and….” Second, I would chill out on the em dashes a little bit. Three sets in one paragraph is a little excessive. Finally, I might actually cut this paragraph down slightly to make more room word-wise later in the statement to discuss what specific things about the program interest me.

Paragraph 2

Furthermore, blogs, webcomics, digital archives, e-readers, and even social media sites like tumblr and Facebook have revolutionized the concept of the book by changing how we share and transmit ideas and information, just as the Gutenberg printing press revolutionized the book all those years ago in the fifteenth century. Once again there has been an explosion both in who can send out information and who can receive it.

This paragraph briefly and effectively introduces my other main academic interest: how new technology has changed the concept of the book-as-object. The tie-back to the printing press is a nice touch; it’s a vivid example that shows that I’m aware of important historical moments in book history.

Paragraph 3

I am deeply interested in the preservation of the physical book, as I think it is an important part of human history (not to mention a satisfying sensory experience for the reader). However I am also very concerned with the digitization and organization of information for the modern world such that the book, in all of its forms, stays relevant and easy to access and use. Collections of books, archives, and information as stored in the world’s servers, libraries and museums are essential resources that need to be properly organized and administered to be fully taken advantage of by their audiences. My purpose in applying to the University of Edinburgh’s Material Culture and History of the Book is to gain the skills necessary to keep all forms of the book relevant and functional in an age when information can move more radically than ever before.

This paragraph actually has a focus problem. Since it covers two topics, I should split it into two paragraphs: one on the integration of my two interests, and one on my goals and interests in the program. I could also stand to expand on what features the program has that interest me: professors I’d like to work with, particular aspects of the curriculum, etc.

In spite of these things, however, this paragraph does a good job clearly integrating the two academic interests related to the book I introduced in the first two paragraphs. And the language is still strong —“satisfying sensory experience” is a great phrase. However, I’ve been using the word “information,” a lot; I might try to replace with appropriate synonyms (like “knowledge”) in a couple of places.

Paragraph 4

Additionally, I intend on pursuing a PhD in Library and Information Sciences upon completion of my master’s and I feel that this program while make me uniquely suited to approach library science from a highly academic and interdisciplinary perspective.

This final paragraph offers just quick touch on my future goals beyond the program. It’s typically fine for this to be relatively brief, as it is here, just so long as you can clearly identify some future goals.

Essay 2: Relevant Experience

The second prompt just asked me to describe my relevant knowledge, training, and skills.

As a folklore and mythology student, I have gained a robust understanding of material culture and how it relates to culture as a whole. I have also learned about the transmission of ideas, information, stories and pieces of lore among and between populations, which is an important component of book history. Folklore is also deeply concerned with questions of the literary vs. oral lore and the tendency for text to “canonize” folklore, and yet text can also question or invert canonized versions; along with this my studies in my focus field of religion and storytelling have been deeply concerned with intertextuality. One of my courses was specifically concerned with the Heian-period Japanese novel The Tale of Genji and questions of translation and representation in post-Heian picture scrolls and also modern translations and manga. In addition to broader cultural questions concerned with gender and spirituality both in historical Japan and now, we considered the relationships between different Genji texts and images.

This is a strong, focused paragraph. I relate my academic background in Folklore and Mythology to my interests in studying the book, as well as showing off some of my knowledge in the area. I also chose and elaborated on a strong example (my class on the Tale of Genji ) of my relevant coursework.

I also have work experience that lends itself to the study of the book. After my freshman year of college I interned at the Chicago History Museum. Though I was in the visitor services department I was exposed to the preservation and archival departments of the museum and worked closely with the education department, which sparked my interest in archival collections and how museums present collection information to the public. After my sophomore year of college and into my junior year, I worked at Harvard’s rare books library, Houghton. At Houghton I prepared curated collections for archival storage. These collections were mostly comprised of the personal papers of noteworthy individuals, categorized into alphabetical folders. This experience made me very process-oriented and helped me to understand how collections come together on a holistic basis.

This paragraph also has a clear focus: my past, relevant work experience. Discussing archival collections and presenting information to the public links the interests discussed in my first statement with my qualifications in my second statement. However, if I were to revise this paragraph, I would add some specific examples of the amazing things I worked on and handled at Houghton Library. In that job, I got to touch Oliver Cromwell’s death mask! An interesting example would make this paragraph really pop even more.

Finally, in my current capacity as an education mentor in Allston, a suburb of Boston, I have learned the value of book history and material culture from an educational perspective. As a mentor who designs curriculum for individual students and small groups, I have learned to highly value clearly organized and useful educational resources such as websites, iPad apps, and books as tools for learning. By managing and organizing collections in a way that makes sense we are making information accessible to those who need it.

This final paragraph discusses my current (at the time) work experience in education and how that ties into my interest in the history of the book. It’s an intriguing connection and also harkens back to my discussion of information availability in the paragraph three of the first statement. Again, if I were to amp up this statement even more, I might include a specific example of a book-based (or book technology-based) project I did with one of my students. I worked on things like bookbinding and making “illuminated manuscripts” with some of my students; those would be interesting examples here.

This statement is split into two parts by virtue of the two-prompt format. However, if I were to integrate all of this information into one unified statement of purpose, I would probably briefly introduce my research interests, go in-depth on my background, then circle back around to speak more about my personal interests and goals and what intrigues me about the program. There’s not really one correct way to structure a statement of purpose just so long as it flows well and paragraphs are structured in a logical way: one topic per paragraph, with a clear topic and concluding sentence.

Majortests Statement of Purpose Sample

This is a fairly straightforward, clearly written statement of purpose sample for a biology program. It includes useful commentary after each paragraph about what this statement of purpose is accomplishing.

This statement of purpose sample is well-organized, with clear topic sentences and points made in each paragraph.
The student clearly identifies what interests her about the program.
The student proactively addresses questions about why she hasn’t gone directly to graduate school, and frames her professional research experience as a positive thing.
She gives a tiny bit of color about her personality in a relevant way by discussing her involvement with the Natural History Society.
In general, discussing high school interests is too far back in time unless the anecdote is very interesting or unusual. The detail about The Theory of Evolution is intriguing; the information about the high school teacher seems irrelevant. The student should have condensed this paragraph into a sentence or two.
While this statement is cogently written and makes the candidate sound competent and well-qualified, it’s not exactly the most scintillating piece of writing out there. Some of the constructions are a little awkward or cliche. For example, the “many people have asked me” sentence followed by “the answer is” is a little bit clunky. This is probably fine for a STEM program. But just be aware that this statement is not a paragon of writing style.

UC Berkeley History Statement of Purpose Sample

This is a graduate school statement of purpose example from the UC Berkeley History department’s PhD program, with annotations from a professor as to why it’s a successful statement.

The author is able to very clearly and articulately lay out her research interests and link them to past work she has successfully completed, namely, her thesis.
She is able to identify several things about the program and Berkeley that indicate why it is a good fit for her research interests.
She addresses the time she spent away from school and frames it as a positive, emphasizing that her use of time was well-considered and productive.
Her writing is very vivid, with excellent word choice and great imagery.

While very well-written and engaging, this sample statement of purpose for graduate school is a little bit on the long side! It’s a little over two single-spaced pages, which is definitely pushing the limits of acceptable length. Try to keep yours at 2 pages or less. Some of the information on the thesis (which comprises over half of the statement of purpose) could be condensed to bring it down to two pages.

Pharmacy Residency Letter of Intent Sample

This is not technically a sample letter of intent for graduate school because it’s actually for a pharmacy residency program. However, this example still provides illumination as to what makes a decent graduate school letter of intent sample.

This is a serviceable letter of intent: the writer clearly lays out their own goals within the field of pharmacy, what qualifications they have and how they’ve arrived at their interests, and how the program fits their needs.
The writing is clearly structured and well-organized.
The main weakness is that some of the writer’s statements come across as fairly generic. For example, “The PGY-1 Residency Program at UO Hospitals will provide me with the opportunity to further develop my clinical knowledge, critical thinking, teaching, research, and leadership skills” is a generic statement that could apply to any residency program. A punchier, more program-specific conclusion would have amped up this letter.
While the writer does a decent job providing examples of their activities, like working as a tutor and attending the APhA conference, more specificity and detail in these examples would make the statement more memorable.
There’s a typo in the last paragraph —a “to” that doesn’t belong! This is an unprofessional blip in an otherwise solid letter. Read you own letter of intent aloud to avoid this!

NIU Bad Statement of Purpose Example

This is an ineffective graduate school statement of purpose example, with annotations on why it doesn’t work.

As you might imagine, the main strength in this document is as an example of what not to do. Otherwise, there is little to recommend it.

The annotations quite clearly detail the weaknesses of this statement. So I won’t address them exhaustively except to point out that this statement of purpose fails at both content and style. The author includes irrelevant anecdotes and lists without offering a decisive picture of interests or any particular insight into the field. Additionally, the statement is riddled with grammatical mistakes, awkward sentence structures, and strange acronyms.
You’ll note that the commentary advises you to “never start with a quote.” I agree that you should never start with a freestanding quote as in this example. However, I do think starting with a quote is acceptable in cases like the Berkeley history example above, where the quote is brief and then directly linked to the research interest.

Our program is federated across Rutgers-Newark and NJIT. Students can work with faculty, do research, and take classes at either institution, regardless of where they are matriculated. However, funding mechanisms and administrative details can differ between universities. Therefore, we encourage you to apply to the university that houses the lab of your potential Faculty Mentor. If you are considering several options on either side, don’t worry about it too much. We will help to figure out the best option. Requirements

As an applicant to the program, you are expected to meet a number of criteria, as listed below. Our Recruitment and Admissions Committee selects applicants for video and on-site interviews based on those criteria, but can make exceptions based on your strengths in other areas. Usually, you should have:

An undergraduate degree in biology or other pertinent area of science.
A strong foundation in chemistry (general and organic) and physics.
Completion of one year of mathematics, preferably calculus.
A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
If you are an international applicant and your primary language is not English, you are required to submit your test scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

To be considered for financial support, your completed application should be submitted by December 15, 2024 for admission for Fall 2025. Admission for the Spring semester is only considered in exceptional cases, as it will complicate your course progression. Applications should include all undergraduate and graduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, a Resume or CV, and TOEFL scores (if applicable). Financial support

As the program is to a significant degree based on faculty research endeavors, admission depends not only on prior academic performance, but also critically on available opportunities and funding in individual or collaborating laboratories, which can vary considerably from year to year. Student funding usually comes from a combination of Teaching Assistantships, University Fellowships, extramural stipends, and faculty research grants. You are strongly encouraged to contact potential mentors to discuss opportunities.

Incoming full-time matriculated students are awarded Teaching Assistantships or nominated for University Fellowships on a competitive basis by the Department Chairs, on the recommendations of the Admissions and Recruitment Committee and the Graduate Directors. Teaching Assistantships are academic or calendar year awards and are renewable on a yearly basis, usually for not longer than a total of five years. Decisions about Teaching Assistantships are made based on student qualifications, current support of students in labs of individual Graduate Faculty, and the balance of funds distribution across program tracks and research fields. Both incoming and continuing students are encouraged to apply to national, regional, and state level funding agencies to obtain grant support for their intended research.

Biology and Ethics

As someone with a PHD in Religion and Ethics, I am especially concerned with the way in which Ethical judgments may heavily influence the success of applications that develop from many avenues of biological research. Sequencing the human genome, gene localization and identity, gene therapy, the creation and release of genetically engineered organisms, bioengineered pharmaceuticals, and ecosystem management of marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments, are all current and lively areas of applied research that call for cooperation and partnerships between biologists and many other professional and cultural groups in the community.

I take particular delight in the way in which the study of biology has an immediate relevance to our daily lives. It is important for everyone to develop an informed sense of how we may individually and collectively continue to fit into the complex ecology of our planet without rendering horrendous destruction. Some of the greatest engineering feats of the future are likely to involve bioengineering projects, particularly concerning the disposal of municipal and industrial wastes and the development of renewable resources.

Humanitarian side of biology.

Biology is the study of living organisms and is divided into specialized fields such as morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin and distribution, but are there opportunities for biologists to work in the humanitarian sector?

The answer is yes. However, like many students who’ve completed their Bachelor’s degree and specialized in something that isn’t directly related to conflict management, development, international politics or human rights, further study and voluntary work is recommended if you want to make getting into this field easier for yourself.

Luckily, there are many ways you can do this. Even if you haven’t finished your degree! For example, if you were to minor in ecology or focus on human biology during your Bachelor’s, there will be more doors open in the humanitarian field once you’ve completed your first degree.

Other options available to students that are either studying or trying to decide what to do after their Bachelor’s, include work placements abroad and internships at nonprofit organizations. Perhaps you’d like to work with frogs in Bolivia, or pandas in China – opportunities like these can often expand into paid roles, or allow for more flexibility in your role at an organization, so you can use your knowledge of biology to humanitarian ends.

These types of opportunities provide you with some great ammunition when it comes to demonstrating your voluntary work experience to organizations and courses you apply for later; give you a real feel for what this kind of work is like and help you decide where in the world you’d like to focus your attention on.

An additional benefit of doing voluntary work is that if you prove yourself capable and useful around the office and out in the field or community, you are often given more responsibility than you might if you were working in a role in the private sector with the same amount of experience behind you. This is extremely beneficial to your career in general, and will often lead you into higher paying roles when you eventually take a paid position.

If you want to take part in a mission or humanitarian work related to biology and ecology, look at forestry organizations, environmental management NGOs, renewable energy or agricultural projects, ecological or environmental community development concerns, or environmental research ventures.

Some great examples include the Pachamama Alliance (pachamama.org), a project that works in the Amazon rainforest; Mumbai Forest Initiative (wrm.org.uy), WWF Forests (wwf.panda.org); Survival International; the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, unep.org); the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS, wcs.org), which aims to conserve the world’s largest wild place in 15 priority regions; African Bamboo (African-bamboo.com); One Acre Fund (oneacrefund.org). However, there are thousands of small NGOs that operate around the world that would be happy to receive a volunteer with some specialized knowledge in biology and some new energy to work for their cause.

It’s true to say that if you’re really serious about taking your career in a humanitarian direction, a Master’s degree cannot do you any harm. Not only will it give you heaps of specialized and practical knowledge to apply when you go out into the world of work, it will help you deeply focus on making a difference and prepare you for an effective, inspiring career down the road.

I seem to have a talent for solving problems. I am particularly successful with practical problems. It is because I am attracted to them. Every problem is like a fun game for me. Whether it is finding an optimum condition for an enzymatic reaction or finding a potential treatment for cancer, it is something that I am always excited to do and I do it with great pleasure.

As I grow, I start to understand the potential financial advantage of being able to solve problems in many high-profit industrial fields. But, I had Biology in my genes… my parents are both Biologists and moreover, my Dad is a Molecular Geneticist. Even though they wanted me to become a doctor or a lawyer, in high school I was more interested in plasmids and cells than anything else.

So, here I am, after 4 years of Molecular Biology and Genetics major, 2.3 years of internship in the US and subsequent 1.25 years of Master’s in the same field, I am applying for a Ph.D. position at one of the top schools in the world, with an ambition to become one of the world’s best scientists unraveling hidden wonders of the world of Biology.

While I was in my first year of pursuing a Master’s Degree, at XXXX University, I realized (when I compared myself to my co-workers), that in the world of research, it is important to be able to find the right motivation. It is imperative that the idea of scientific discovery, the idea of finding something new, even discovering a protein-protein interaction or a new control mechanism (both of which may be used for treating or even curing people!) pushes me forward even when I am very tired.

I realized that being a good scientist takes more than just a good theoretical background and skillful hands, which my mentors believe I have. It takes breaking through emotional barriers, keeping personal life separate from the academy and heading towards the discovery at full speed at all times, no matter what the “weather” is.

I also realized that a non-ceasing self- improvement is an essential part of being successful as a scientist. One has to find the inherent weaknesses and fix them, upgrading the “discovery-making machine” – what I believe I am (or at least, about to become) as a scientist.

I am profoundly interested in the world of intracellular signaling and its connection with the cell cycle. The highly-specific relay of information processed from the outside of a cell deep into its nucleus intrigues me. It is fascinating how signal cascades function and how they malfunction, leading to cancer.

The further we understand how a signal pathway works, the closer we are to be able to provide treatments and cures for patients who suffer from diseases related to that pathway. I have worked on canonical Wnt signaling for over a year now and I believe that even this one pathway can be a major part of my future decade (at least) of research life.

In parallel with basic research, I am planning to work on methods development. The invention of a single new technology has greater significance for humanity than most single findings in basic research. Many times, scientists made important discoveries through inventing a revolutionary technique or improving an existing one.

The power of one original technique, given it has a high impact, is harnessed on the road to thousands of other discoveries. Thus, just like in a signal transduction cascade, the impact brought by one important discovery/invention of a method is amplified.

It is not that I think the discoveries in basic research are less exciting – I love basic research. Plus, the demand for novel technologies arises during basic research. Methods development is just another angle through which I am planning to contribute as a molecular biologist/biochemist.

Research Accomplishments:

At the beginning of my second semester as a freshman (at Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, XXXX University), I volunteered to join Dr. Alice Brown’s laboratory as a research student, where we were studying the molecular biology of inherited neuropathies, particularly the Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

In her lab, I was able to learn many basic techniques such as PCR, electrophoresis, and restriction digestion analysis. After almost a year of assisting her Ph.D. students with their projects, Dr. Brown assigned an independent screening project to me.

With my “beginner’s luck” I discovered several novel mutations in the GDAP1 and Cx32 genes of the hereditary neuropathy patients I was screening. These mutations are published in the Brain article (Green et al., 2004) and became part of a Master’s Thesis of one of the students.

Since members of two laboratories contributed to the article and since I was only an undergraduate at that time, my name was listed as 12th out of 16 authors, even though I discovered and characterized two out of five novel mutations described in the article.

At the end of my 3rd year, I joined Dr. John Black’s laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine, as a summer intern. The main research topic in this lab was about myosin folding and novel putative chaperone for myosin – UNC-45. I was highly motivated by this new research field and I decided to freeze my undergraduate study and stay for a year with Dr. Black.

My first year, during which I was working on fluorescent probes for myosin motor domain, resulted in a poster that I presented in a departmental retreat in Galveston (where Dr. Black moved at the end of that academic year). I wanted more experience and a preferably a publication too, so I stayed for one more year with Dr. Black.

During the second year (now at University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston), I worked on several projects, two of which are never going to be published, since I could not finish them by the time I had to return to XXXX country and I believe the funding for those projects was cut.

The project that could get published was about myosin degradation via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (Johnson et al., J Cell Biol , 2007). This was the major project of the lab at that moment and I contributed two figures showing in vitro evidence that myosin is indeed degraded via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway.

I returned back to XXXX country in 2005 and finished my undergraduate study. Then, in 2006, I became a Master’s student at XXXX University. I joined Dr. Alex Sage’s lab, whose research topic was identifying novel cancer-related Wnt/beta-catenin pathway target genes.

After working 6 months in Dr. Sage’s lab, we already were planning two manuscripts. In one of the articles, as a first author of a prospective J Biol Chem article, I show that a gene (on which, there are about 40 articles in PubMed) is a target of the pathway and provide evidence that this gene plays a significant role in several brain tumors.

In the second prospective article, proposed to be submitted to Cancer Research , I am currently the second author and here we identify two genes (7 articles and 155 articles in PubMed!) as transcriptional targets of the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway and their significance in hepatocellular carcinoma.

What is a biology personal statement?

Your biology personal statement should tell the university all about your strengths, skills, experience and career plans.

It should also convey your enthusiasm for the subject, and what aspects of it you enjoy and why.

How do I write a biology personal statement?

It’s a good idea to start your statement with why you want to study biology at university.

Try to talk about what drew you to biology initially - was it a childhood experience, or were you inspired by a family member or a television documentary? Pin this down if you can, as admissions tutors always want to know about your motivations for wanting to study their subject.

Make sure you back up everything with examples, as you need to convince the university that you they should offer you a place on their biology degree over anyone else.

A great biology personal statement should be written clearly and concisely, with a good introduction, middle, and a conclusion. After all, your statement has to stand out from the crowd if your UCAS application is going to be successful.

What should I include in my biology personal statement?

It’s important to include skills and experience from all areas of your life and try to relate them to hobbies or extracurricular activities if they helped you to build on certain strengths.

Think about how any work experience you have completed might be useful in your degree, e.g. what skills did you learn? were there any parts of it you particularly enjoyed? if so, why?

Make sure you include everything that is relevant to your course, which means you may want to leave off your Grade 6 in piano, or your swimming certificates.

University admissions tutors want to know what you can bring to their department and what value you can add, so every sentence of your personal statement needs to earn its place.

You need to sell yourself as a well-rounded individual in terms of academic knowledge, work experience and extracurricular activities in order to have a chance of being successful with your biology UCAS application (although this doesn't mean lying or embellishing the truth!).

Biology has always been a fascination and more of a miracle to me from my childhood. It is the science of life because it concerns about the microscopic structures of the living organism and how they interact with each other to give raise its properties. At the school level, I exposed to major concepts of biology such as cell, genes, deoxyribonucleic acid, and protein. I used to read about their important roles in an organism and I never understood how these smallest components affect the most significant components in our body. Moreover, I questioned myself as well how these molecules could control our health & illness and how they could help us in curing numerous diseases. In addition to that, being in the biology lab preparing the tools and the substances for an experiment was the most enjoyable activities during my high school. All these thoughts and feelings lead me to decide that I should pursue my education in clinical laboratory science.

I successfully got admission into King Saud University where I graduated from the college of applied medical science, clinical laboratory science with first class honor; overall grade 4.98 out of 5. In college, I have been exposed to many fields of study that expounded to me the myths and mysteries of life such as biochemistry, microbiology, environmental microbiology, genetics, immunology, and enzymology. However, these courses introduced me to new questions that made me more curious about the inner life of cells. My insatiable thirst for delving deep into these subjects has inspired me to pursue a graduate career in cell and molecular biology because it will give me the opportunity to study the basic processes that run life’s playbook.

My graduation project was a literature review about “The Correlation between Human Papillomaviruses Infection and Infertility in Male”; manly discusses the significant role of human papillomaviruses in male fertility since it alters the sperms parameters. During this project; I learned the international standards of writing a literature review and referencing. In addition to that, I learned how to work on Endnote program and discussing my thesis in front of my Professors. As a result of perfect academic record, I won the dean’s list award which I considered it as a sign that means I am on the right path. After my graduation, I started my Internship at King Khalid University Hospital where I spent one year in routine and special laboratories. This program gave me a great opportunity to develop my technical and mechanical skills. Simultaneously, I volunteer with CLS club to give sessions through their snapchat account. Subsequently, I participated with a team to write a booklet about medical laboratory tests which is known as “Way to Medical Lab Test World”. This booklet will be published in cooperation with Saudi Ministry of Health.

Apart from my curriculum, I have good leadership skill and good teamwork abilities. I also have the enthusiasm to learn about life and its ambiguities. Life taught me to be a hardworking person to reach my goals and achieve my dreams.

After receiving my Bachelor’s degree, I know I want to be in a research center to help humanity in solving many lethal issues, especially the genetic problems. I also want to publish lots of landmark research in different scientific journals. Also, I would like to work in the academic field after completing my degree because the joy of teaching other is indescribable. My long-term goals are to work for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

My search for the best match of objective, passions, and dreams has ended at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) with the best of fundamental research in all avenues of bioscience. When I visited the university website, I was fascinated with the research works that are carried out by KAUST which match my interest in the same line. Moreover, having a prestigious university like KAUST in the Middle East that allows us to conduct researches that suitable to our area made more excited to apply. KAUST gives me hope and makes me more confident in realizing my goal which trains myself thoroughly through the M.S program and proceeds further to a Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology. I am sure that the M.S/ Ph.D. in KAUST will definitely widen the horizons of my knowledge and help me obtain a milestone in my career.

In conclusion, I request you to consider my application favorably and provide me an opportunity to pursue my higher studies at your esteemed university.
