The resume allows you to introduce the “headlines” of your experiences to date and provide context that helps us evaluate the rest of your application materials.

Prepare a one-page resume that includes highlights of your experiences, interests,  and academic record in reverse-chronological order. If you have professional and/or extracurricular experiences, please include them. Please select a font size that ensures your document is legible.

We request that you stick to one page. Remember that you have an entire application that will provide details to complement the resume.

Curriculum vitae and candidate's statement - showcasing your accomplishments.

The curriculum vitae and candidate's statement are the faculty member's voice in their reappointment and promotion considerations. These documents are sent to internal and external referees, who will write letters evaluating the case for reappointment or promotion.  They are also included in the file that is reviewed by committees at the Department, School, and, for Professoriate, the University.

Keeping Current

It is important to keep your CV up to date by systematically collecting and recording relevant achievements as they occur.  These might include:

  • publications - articles, reviews, case reports, book chapters, abstracts
  • extramural and intramural grants and awards
  • teaching awards
  • national service - membership/leadership in national academic organizations, journal review, editorial boards, study sections, grant review
  • invited presentations

Any informative CV format is acceptable as long as it comprehensively communicates scholarly activities.  The Detailed Guidelines (below) include information typically provided in anticipation of committee review.  Candidates should be encouraged to review the list carefully, as it includes some items that are required, as noted.  For example, Stanford requires that peer-reviewed and non peer-reviewed publications be listed separately. In addition, we ask that peer-reviewed publications be separated into ‘original research’ and ‘other’ (which may include peer-reviewed editorials, commentaries, etc.)

It is important to date the CV to indicate most recent update.

It is very helpful to order items consistently. That is, most recent to oldest, or oldest to most recent, for all historical lists such as educational history, professional appointments, presentations, awards and publications.

Candidate's Statement

The Candidate's Statement provides a faculty member the opportunity to explain their contributions, achievements and future plans in the research, clinical, teaching and administrative arenas.

Our PhD Program is designed for candidates with a strong academic background.

In your application, we require that you provide information for each college and university you have attended full-time for one academic year or more. Do not separately list study-abroad programs you completed while enrolled at the home institution if grades for such programs are included on your transcript.

Reporting Your GPA

For each institution you have attended we ask that you provide your GPA using a four-point grading system. If you attended a school that does not use a four-point grading system:

  • Provide your GPA using the four-point grading system (see sidebar for reference). Note, international applicants may want to use the free GPA calculator   provided by World Education Services (WES)

Many schools add 0.3 for a “+” grade and subtract 0.3 for a “-” grade. A grade of A+ is usually assigned a value of 4.0 (equivalent to an A) , although 4.3 is awarded at some institutions. If you attended an institution with a maximum GPA of 4.3 on 4.0 scale, the maximum score you can enter is a 4.0 (see sidebar for reference).

Transcripts

Your transcript tells the admissions committee a great deal about who you are as a student. We require that you upload your official transcript from each institution that you list in your online application. Your uploaded transcripts must:

  • Be an official transcript issued by your institution
  • Include the front and back of each page of the transcript

You will be responsible for verifying that the uploaded transcript is readable and the institution’s name, the degree conferred, and conferral date (if applicable) are clearly visible. An illegible transcript will delay the review of your application.

If your transcript is in a language other than English, please include an English translation.  Upload your transcripts with their accompanying translation as part of your application. We accept translations issued by the institution or a professional translation service. Translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records.

  • Mail a copy of your official transcript to our office.
  • Provide separate transcripts for units that were transferred from a previous institution if the courses, units, and grades are included on the transcript your submit

If you are admitted w e require official transcripts to be mailed to our office. Note that any discrepancy between the uploaded transcript and the official transcript could result in the denial of your application or withdrawal of your offer of admission.

Completed Coursework

In your online application, list:

  • The three most advanced mathematics courses you have completed
  • The three most advanced statistics or econometrics courses you have completed*
  • The four most advanced courses you have completed in your planned field of study

*Applicants applying to the fields of Organizational Behavior-Micro or Marketing-Behavioral are welcome to include any courses that may be relevant to advanced math or statistics/econometrics but are not required.

Major Honors/Awards

In your online application list your single highest honor, award, fellowship, or nonacademic distinction you have received that reflects most clearly on your potential for doctoral study in your chosen field of study. Please list all other relevant honors and awards in your resume or CV. Examples of information to include regarding your highest honor or award are below:

  • One of the five students in my graduating class of 87 students majoring in psychology in 2015 who received distinguished research awards.
  • One of the 167 people who graduated magna cum laude (or with a higher honor) in my graduating class of 1,337 in 2016.

Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Your resume or CV serves as a good supplement to your statement of purpose and other application materials. In it, you can summarize all of your qualifications, honors, educational accomplishments, and interests. It provides the admissions committee with additional information to better evaluate your candidacy.

Tips for Scanning and Submitting Documents

  • Do not password-protect the document or embed macros
  • Limit the file size to 10 MB
  • Configure the document to print full-size on 8.5 x 11” letter-size paper

If you would like to apply to Stanford, please do so online by submitting the Common Application .

When you apply to Stanford, you apply to the university as a whole, not to a particular major, department or school. We encourage you to indicate prospective majors and career interests in the application, but please know you are not bound by these selections in any way.

The Common Application includes essay prompts for your personal essay. In addition to the personal essay, we also require the Stanford Questions, which you can access and submit through the Common Application once you add Stanford University to your list of colleges.

The essays are your chance to tell us about yourself in your own words; there are no right or wrong answers and you should allow your genuine voice to come through. These questions help us get to know you as a friend, future roommate and classmate.

Stanford Questions

We ask applicants to answer several short questions (limit 50 words each) and to write a short essay on each of the three topics below.

Short Essay Questions

There is a 100-word minimum and a 250-word maximum for each essay.

  • The Stanford community is deeply curious and driven to learn in and out of the classroom. Reflect on an idea or experience that makes you genuinely excited about learning.
  • Virtually all of Stanford's undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—get to know you better.
  • Please describe what aspects of your life experiences, interests and character would help you make a distinctive contribution as an undergraduate to Stanford University.

Yes… a failure résumé .

This is a great way to appreciate the lessons you learn through experience. So while you’re busy polishing up a standard résumé, framing your most attractive qualities and accomplishments for others, you might want to take time out to build your failure résumé.

Here is Tina’s explanation of this powerful tool:

I require my students to write a failure résumé. That is, to craft a résumé that summarizes all their biggest screw ups — personal, professional, and academic. For every failure, each student must describe what he or she learned from that experience. Just imagine the looks of surprise this assignment inspires in students who are so used to showcasing their successes.

However, after they finish their résumé, they realize that viewing their experiences through the lens of failure forced them to come to terms with the mistakes they have made along the way and to extract important lessons from them. In fact, as the years go by, many former students continue to keep their failure résumé up-to-date, in parallel with their traditional résumé of successes.

A failure resume is a quick way to demonstrate that failure is an important part of our learning process, especially when you’re stretching your abilities, doing things the first time, or taking risks. We hire people who have experience not just because of their successes but also because of their failures.

Failures increase the chance that you won’t make the same mistake again. Failures are also a sign that you have taken on challenges that expand your skills. In fact, many successful people believe that if you aren’t failing sometimes then you aren’t taking enough risks. Additionally, it is pretty clear that the ratio of our successes and failure is pretty constant. So, if you want more successes, you are going to have to tolerate more failure along the way.

You deserve to take credit for all that you have learned in life, so use this tool to do it. What are you waiting for? It’s a job each of us is perfectly qualified for.

Tips for writing your resume

To land the perfect job, you need the perfect resume. In today’s crowded job market, it is more important than ever to stand out among the competition. When you write your resume, it is vital that you get everything right, from the organization of the template to the details of your work experience. To make sure your resume is flawless, here are some tips for writing the best resume possible.

Let them know where to contact you

Your resume should begin with your contact information. It is very important that potential employers, having read your resume, know how to contact you! At the top of your resume, include your name, phone number, email address, and city.

Introduce yourself

A personal summary, though optional, is a great way to introduce yourself to an employer with your resume. This section is comprised of one or two paragraphs where you can feature your notable accomplishments and highlight your most valuable skills. Your summary should give employers a brief outline of your experience and capabilities and intrigue them to keep reading.

What do you do best?

Shorter than a work history section, in a skills section you can efficiently list your core competencies in a way that is direct and easy to read. Showcase the skills and abilities that you bring to the job, focussing on those which distinguish you from the competition. The more useful and unique your skills are, the more you will stand out to an employer.

Showcase your achievements

Display your work experience in reverse-chronological order, beginning with your most recent position at the top of the section. Describe for each job your title, responsibilities, and accomplishments, with a focus on performance and results rather than duties. Use action words like ‘developed, ‘produced’, and ‘delivered’ when describing your work history to create compelling and impactful descriptions of your experience. Highlighting quantifiable information, like performance metrics and revenue, is a great way to demonstrate your abilities.

What did you learn, and where did you learn it?

Your education section should include the name of any post-secondary schools you attended, the degrees you earned, and any academic distinctions you achieved that you deem worth featuring. If they are particularly relevant, you can also include major areas of study and important projects that you participated in. Like the work experience section, your education should be displayed in reverse-chronological order.
