map of states of Mexico with Sonora, Campeche, Baja California, and Chiapas in color

The Growth Lab has conducted research across Mexico, on the national and subnational level.

LATEST RESEARCH

The impact of return migration on employment and wages in mexican cities, place-specific determinants of income gaps: new sub-national evidence from mexico, globalization and protectionism: amlo’s 2006 presidential run, the impact of the mexican drug war on trade, tabasco: diagnóstico de crecimiento.

Since 2003, the GDP per capita of Tabasco has consistently figured among the 4 largest in the country. However, this level of economic activity has not translated into an equally favorable performance in other social welfare metrics. According to CONEVAL, the Tabasco poverty rate in 2016 was 50.9%, seven percentage points higher than the national rate (43.6%). On the other hand, the average monthly income of the workers of the state is in the 40th percentile of all the states.

This discrepancy can be explained because the mining activity, despite accumulating only 3% of jobs, represents more than 50% of the state's GDP. If we only consider non-oil GDP, we have that the GDP per capita of the state has tended to be located around the country's median, and for 2016 it was in the 30th percentile nationwide.

In 2015, Hermosillo was in the top 5% of wealthiest municipalities, with poverty levels and informal employment rates significantly lower than in the rest of the country. But the economy of this city in Sonora State has clearly lost its dynamism over the past few years. What happened in Hermosillo? Can the current economic structure sustain the municipality’s high wages and guarantee future growth? What policy interventions are needed?

The World Bank

The World Bank In Mexico

Mexico is the second largest economy in Latin America. The World Bank Group engagement with the country is structured around a model that provides development solutions adapted to the country, with an integral package of financial, knowledge and convening services.

Mexico Overview

With a population of almost 130 million, a rich cultural history and diversity, and abundant natural resources, Mexico is among the 15 largest economies in the world and the second-largest economy in Latin America. The country has solid macroeconomic institutions, is open to trade, and has a diversified manufacturing base connected to global value chains.

Over the last three decades, Mexico has underperformed in terms of growth, inclusion, and poverty reduction compared to similar countries. Its economic growth averaged just above 2 percent a year between 1980 and 2022, limiting progress in convergence relative to high-income economies.

The Mexican economy grew by 3.2% in 2023, the second consecutive year of growth exceeding 3%, a moderation after the post-pandemic rebound. The official multidimensional poverty rate fell from 43.9% in 2020 to 36.3% in 2022, lifting 8.8 million Mexicans out of poverty, although extreme poverty has decreased more slowly.

The economy has recovered its employment and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) pre-pandemic levels. Mexico’s stable macroeconomic framework, the U.S. dynamism, and solid manufacturing base will support economic growth.

To accelerate sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction over the medium term, Mexico needs to address structural constraints such as limited access to finance, insecurity, informality, regulatory burdens, and infrastructure bottlenecks. Tackling these challenges is essential to fully seize the opportunity that nearshoring represents in the current international environment.

Last Updated: Mar 27, 2024

The Country Partnership Framework (CPF) for Mexico was discussed by the World Bank Group (WBG) Board of Executive Directors on February 27, 2020. The CPF covers a six-year period (2020-2025) and aligns the WBG’s engagement with the government’s National Development Plan. The objectives remain highly relevant in the present context, allowing flexible and strategic adjustments to respond to the current supply and demand shocks and to support a strong resilient economy. It builds on the analysis of the Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD) and reflects the views and strategy of the authorities.

The World Bank has been supporting Mexico’s efforts to deepen financial inclusion and expand access to finance, which has been a critical bottleneck for growth and poverty reduction. The Bank has supported Mexico’s expansion of needed financial access to poor and rural populations, women, youth, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

Through an established network of private financial intermediaries (PFIs), for example, the Expanding Rural Finance Project increased the availability of finance to rural MSMEs in areas where commercial banks had not been able to reach local producers. This Project helped to establish and/or improve credit, risk, and management capacity of 255 small PFIs located in rural areas. Between 2016-2019, 173,981 credits for productive purposes were extended to 139,253 rural producers and MSMEs (average loan size of US$1,850), of which 76 percent live in rural areas in the poorer states of the South, 83 percent are women, and 22 percent live in communities classified as marginalized or highly marginalized by the National Council for Population.

The editors of this collection have compiled a wealth of information of interest to both experienced Mexicanists and to researchers preparing for a first venture into Mexican archives. The book, divided into two main sections, includes selections from thirty-five contributors who wrote articles particularly for this volume. Not every archive of interest is described, indeed the editors make no claims of completeness, but they have provided information on the major research centers open to scholars.

Part I is a general treatment of research problems in Mexican history. Daniel Cosío Villegas and France V. Scholes have provided a perspective from both sides of the border with a sympathetic view to the problems of young scholars. Four more essays in this section discuss topics in need of study in Mexican history and methodology. Part II contains general information for field research. Two chapters deal with the organization of the Mexican archives and offer suggestions on such day-to-day matters as renting apartments and cutting through the red tape in gaming entrance to the collections. The following three chapters describe individual libraries and archives. In these sections the contributors have included information such as the addresses, telephone numbers, days and hours, the type of circulation, and the available reproduction facilities. A series of essays follows discussing sources for research projects in the colonial period, the nineteenth century, and Revolutionary Mexico. The last chapter contains three bibliographical essays and a compilation of unpublished dissertation titles on Mexico from 1950 through 1970.

Although three sections discuss documentary collections outside Mexico City (the Archivo General de Centro América, the U.S. National Archives, and the archival collections in the Mexican states), the book concentrates on the libraries in the capital. Three maps of Mexico City appear in the appendices to further aid scholars in locating archives and other points of historical importance.

The book contains practical information useful to any historian working on Mexican topics, especially for researchers in Mexico City. The editors have made available under one cover a valuable tool and a handy reference guide.

Human and Drug Trafficking Across the US-Mexico Border

Human and drug trafficking on the US-Mexico border is an immediate threat to both illegal immigrants and US citizens. Drug cartels seemingly have more authority than police in the border region and minors are targeted for sex work and marriage, which subsequently results in an alarming rate of teenage pregnancies. The porous border allows for illegal substances such as heroin and cocaine to seep into our country-and eventually, each state, county, community, and many schools. A majority of Americans impacted […]

Research on Mexico Border Wall

For my research theory I am studying the proposed United States/Mexico border wall because I want to know if this physical barrier will lessen illegal immigration, drug importation, and terrorist access so that readers understand how a physical border wall will improve United States national security.  The basic idea of deterrence theory is that an actor will avoid conflict if there is a strong enough deterrent. I chose to use deterrence theory to answer my research question because it is […]

General Impression on the Painting

My general impression on the painting, Self-portrait on the Borderline Between Mexico and the United States, by Frida Kahlo, is that there is a huge contrast between each side of the painting. Mexico is a land of extremes, with high mountains and deep canyons in the center of the country, sweeping deserts in the north, and dense rain forests in the south and east.

Mountains cover much of Mexico. Between the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range in the east and the Sierra Madre Occidental in the west lie small mountain ranges on the Central Plateau. These regions are rich with valuable metals like silver and copper.

The stretch of land called the Yucatán Peninsula juts into the Gulf of Mexico from Mexico's southeastern tip. It was once the home of the Maya civilization, an ancient culture whose amazing buildings can still be seen today.

PEOPLE & CULTURE

Mexico is the product of a rich Native American heritage, three centuries of Spanish rule, and a shared border with the world's richest country, the United States . Today, many Mexicans are mestizos, which means they have a mix of Native American and Spanish blood.

Throughout its history, Mexico has been home to great artists. The Maya and other Native Americans made impressive murals, sculptures, and jewelry. Modern Mexican artists include great painters, photographers, sculptors, and muralists.

Mexicans take sports seriously. In ancient times, losers of a ritual ball game were once put to death. In some dangerous sports, like bullfighting and rodeo (which was invented in Mexico), competitors still put their lives on the line.

Few nations on Earth support as many plant and animal species as Mexico does. Located partway between the Equator and the Arctic Circle, it is a refuge for animals fleeing extreme cold in the north and intense heat in the south.

In northern Mexico, deserts are full of plant and animal species that have found ways to survive the harsh environment. On Mexico's west coast, gray whales swim thousands of miles each year from Alaska to breed in the waters off Baja California .

The rain forests and coastal wetlands of eastern Mexico are home to thousands of tropical plant species and elusive animals like jaguars and quetzal birds.

GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY

Mexico is rich in natural resources, like oil, silver, copper, and agricultural products. Its economy boasts a rich diversity of agricultural crops, highly productive oil fields, a growing manufacturing base, as well as strong trade with the United States and Canada .

The Olmec people, Mexico's first complex society, emerged in the southeastern part of the country around 1200 B.C. They were later followed by the Maya, the Toltec, and the Aztec peoples.

Mexico's ancient societies built great cities and huge pyramids, created remarkable works of art, and even studied the stars and planets to determine when to plant crops and hold ceremonies.

In the early 1500s, the Spanish arrived in Mexico. The Aztec people got sick from smallpox and other diseases that the Spanish brought with them. The Spaniards also seized and destroyed the Aztec capital, called Tenochtilán. The Spanish ruled Mexico until 1821.

feature_pencilpaper

One of the hardest parts of writing a research paper can be just finding a good topic to write about. Fortunately we've done the hard work for you and have compiled a list of 113 interesting research paper topics. They've been organized into ten categories and cover a wide range of subjects so you can easily find the best topic for you.

In addition to the list of good research topics, we've included advice on what makes a good research paper topic and how you can use your topic to start writing a great paper.

What Makes a Good Research Paper Topic?

Not all research paper topics are created equal, and you want to make sure you choose a great topic before you start writing. Below are the three most important factors to consider to make sure you choose the best research paper topics.

#1: It's Something You're Interested In

A paper is always easier to write if you're interested in the topic, and you'll be more motivated to do in-depth research and write a paper that really covers the entire subject. Even if a certain research paper topic is getting a lot of buzz right now or other people seem interested in writing about it, don't feel tempted to make it your topic unless you genuinely have some sort of interest in it as well.

#2: There's Enough Information to Write a Paper

Even if you come up with the absolute best research paper topic and you're so excited to write about it, you won't be able to produce a good paper if there isn't enough research about the topic. This can happen for very specific or specialized topics, as well as topics that are too new to have enough research done on them at the moment. Easy research paper topics will always be topics with enough information to write a full-length paper.

Trying to write a research paper on a topic that doesn't have much research on it is incredibly hard, so before you decide on a topic, do a bit of preliminary searching and make sure you'll have all the information you need to write your paper.

#3: It Fits Your Teacher's Guidelines

Don't get so carried away looking at lists of research paper topics that you forget any requirements or restrictions your teacher may have put on research topic ideas. If you're writing a research paper on a health-related topic, deciding to write about the impact of rap on the music scene probably won't be allowed, but there may be some sort of leeway. For example, if you're really interested in current events but your teacher wants you to write a research paper on a history topic, you may be able to choose a topic that fits both categories, like exploring the relationship between the US and North Korea. No matter what, always get your research paper topic approved by your teacher first before you begin writing.

113 Good Research Paper Topics

Below are 113 good research topics to help you get you started on your paper. We've organized them into ten categories to make it easier to find the type of research paper topics you're looking for.

How to Write a Great Research Paper

Even great research paper topics won't give you a great research paper if you don't hone your topic before and during the writing process. Follow these three tips to turn good research paper topics into great papers.

#1: Figure Out Your Thesis Early

Before you start writing a single word of your paper, you first need to know what your thesis will be. Your thesis is a statement that explains what you intend to prove/show in your paper. Every sentence in your research paper will relate back to your thesis, so you don't want to start writing without it!

As some examples, if you're writing a research paper on if students learn better in same-sex classrooms, your thesis might be "Research has shown that elementary-age students in same-sex classrooms score higher on standardized tests and report feeling more comfortable in the classroom."

If you're writing a paper on the causes of the Civil War, your thesis might be "While the dispute between the North and South over slavery is the most well-known cause of the Civil War, other key causes include differences in the economies of the North and South, states' rights, and territorial expansion."

#2: Back Every Statement Up With Research

Remember, this is a research paper you're writing, so you'll need to use lots of research to make your points. Every statement you give must be backed up with research, properly cited the way your teacher requested. You're allowed to include opinions of your own, but they must also be supported by the research you give.

#3: Do Your Research Before You Begin Writing

You don't want to start writing your research paper and then learn that there isn't enough research to back up the points you're making, or, even worse, that the research contradicts the points you're trying to make!

Get most of your research on your good research topics done before you begin writing. Then use the research you've collected to create a rough outline of what your paper will cover and the key points you're going to make. This will help keep your paper clear and organized, and it'll ensure you have enough research to produce a strong paper.
