Speech on Yoga: Ancient Yogic way of living is considered as one of the six traditional schools of Indian philosophies. Yoga is the culmination of physical, mental, spiritual and holistic ways of leading life. This discipline is said to have originated in India from more than 5,000 years. ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’, which means to ‘unite’. Yoga helps improve health and prevent diseases through physical exercises, breath control, relaxation techniques, diet, meditation and positive approach.

Speech on Yoga 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Yoga Speech in English, written in easy and simple words for class 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

Good morning to everyone present. Today is International Yoga Day 2021. We have been celebrating since its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Taking this opportunity, I would like to speak a few words on its benefits and why we need to incorporate yoga in our daily life. Yoga is a science of bringing balance between mind and body. It is an art of healthy living and is deeply rooted in our Indian Culture since ancient times.

Yoga is connected to spiritual discipline and is originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ meaning to join or to unite. It was initiated by Lord Shiva, who is also known as Adiyogi. Our Rishi, Sages and Saints have been practising and disseminating the same to the people. India being the pioneer, helped other countries realize its benefits and spiritual meaning affixed to it.

Also, there are different types of postures known as Asanas which forms the essential part of it. The poses are in alliance with breathing methods by keeping in mind all aspects of the body. Moreover, Gautama Buddha and Vardhaman Mahavir were too, patrons of yoga. They preached five great vows and eightfold path by keeping in consideration the yoga sadhana.

Even in Bhagwat Gita, the holy book of Hindus yoga is distinguished into three parts known as Gyan, Bhakti and Karma yoga. Yogic likes Gorakhnath, Mastyandranath and Shrinivasa Bhatt, popularised Hatha yoga. It works on the principle of integration of mind, body, emotion and energy. Every element of the body works in synergy to provide healthy well-being and peace. It assists in becoming a part of the universe by eradicating undesirable components of life.

Mind yoga calms our nervous system by reducing stress. The cells become active and get ready to perform tasks effectively. The level of concentration and focus increases drastically. A person feels full of energy and looks forward to start the day with positive vibes. Yoga not only develops physical strength but inner will too. Discipline and regulation bring order in day to day life which in turn helps in evading chaos.

It supports systematic living in sync with nature. The asana is related to the elements of nature and explains the benefit of living with it harmoniously. The immune system advances further contributing to better health and a resilient body. The white and red blood corpuscles fight diseases better and in an efficient way. Individuals with respiratory problems find development in the lungs.

Inhalation and exhalation improve. Digestive disorders like ulcers, ulcerative colitis and irritative bowls are brought under control through Kapalbhati. It also eases constipation. In conclusion, it is a way of life as an individual mind gets free from apprehensions. People develop positive energy to resist temptations and depression gracefully.

Yoga helps in healing and self-care. Relationships with family, friends, colleagues and others improve as it develops compassion and equality. Life will not be seen as a problem, and people will enjoy every aspect willingly and happily. I feel grateful and honoured to be born in India and thank everyone who attended this day and graced this occasion with enthusiasm.

Short Speech on Yoga 200 Words in English

Below we have provided International Yoga Day Speech, suitable for class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 students

Good morning respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. As we are promoting health and fitness week, I have been handed over the opportunity to deliver the significance and relevance of yoga before you. It is a privilege to speak over art which was discovered and mastered in India since ancient times. Workout trends come and go but what remains in trend forever is yoga.

It not only improves our health but develops well-being. The skin radiates, and the body achieves flexibility-meditation with yoga results in a peaceful and relaxed mind. Utthasana, Padmasana, Bhujhangasana and Sarvangasana are some of the asana’s mentioned in it. These help in sharpening minds and lets the brain utilize the intellect to the fullest.

Yoga provides relief from the regular stressful routine and improves sleep. By following it regularly symptoms of insomnia and restlessness decreases. It is beneficial especially to children as they gain focus and concentration, further building their power and making them academically strong. But, the development of technology and gadgets have impaired humanity by converting them into lethargic individuals.

Yoga Day Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

10 Lines On Yoga Day

A healthy body and mind are critical for a long and peaceful life.

Every year on June 21, people worldwide celebrate International Yoga Day.

On June 21, 2015, New Delhi hosted the first-ever Yoga Day celebration. Since then, it has become an annual event.

Yoga helps keep the body and mind in balance.

Unlike intense exercise, yoga is suitable for people of all ages.

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi first proposed international Yoga Day to the UN General Assembly.

Strengthening, reducing inflammation, and enhancing flexibility are all benefits of yoga. It raises immunity, strengthens the body's defences against infection, improves balance, strengthens the heart, and reduces stress.

Additionally, yoga can reduce anxiety.

With the help of yoga, numerous severe illnesses are curable.

International Yoga Day is the primary factor contributing to the rapid growth of yoga in other nations.

Short Speech On Yoga Day

In our Hindu scriptures, there is mention of the ancient Indian practice of yoga. India is the country where yoga first gained popularity as a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline. It is derived from "Yoj," which means "to unite" in Sanskrit, and Maharshi Patanjali is known as the originator of yoga.

International Yoga Day

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for it to be recognised as International Yoga Day to spread awareness of yoga's importance and advantages, June 21 has been set aside as International Yoga Day. The event drew participants from more than 170 nations, including the USA, China, Canada, etc. The celebration included activities like yoga training campuses, yoga competitions, and various other events to spread awareness of the benefits of yoga throughout schools and communities.

Yoga And Health

Yoga is more than just a physical exercise requiring intricate breathing patterns and body movements. In truth, these are merely the most fundamental aspects of this profound science that reveals the human mind's limitlessness and the soul's potential. It supports the healthy growth of the mind, body, and soul by helping practitioners become proficient in particular yoga asanas or poses while using breathing techniques. Pranayama should receive special attention because it is the most fundamental type of yoga practised before any other. It teaches us how mastering our breath can do wonders for our bodies.

As a result, International Yoga Day started to raise awareness of the positive effects of yoga around the world, and it is observed every year on June 21.

Long Speech On Yoga Day

We all know that physical activities are essential in our daily lives. It's important to remember that our ancestors spent all their time moving around as nomads, searching for food and shelter, and travelling daily. Similarly, our bodies are designed and have evolved to be regularly active.

There are many types of physical activities, including swimming, running, jogging, walking, and dancing, to name a few. But, among all of this, yoga holds a special place. It promotes the integration of the mind, body, and soul. Different forms of yoga benefit our physical and mental health in different ways; they also help us cure various diseases and deformities of the body. International Yoga Day is celebrated to rejoice in this unique art.

Origin Of Yoga

Yoga has its origins in Indian mythology. Legend has it that Lord Shiva, also known as Adi Yogi, created this artwork, a significant source of inspiration for all yoga teachers worldwide. The Indus-Saraswati civilisation in northern India is typically credited with creating this brilliant art as long ago as 5,000 years ago. According to legend, this phrase was first mentioned in the Rig Veda. But Maharishi Patanjali, during the classical era, is credited with giving the first systematic presentation of yoga.

The Rig Veda is not the only piece of Indian literature that discusses yoga. It is also mentioned in the Upanishads, Smritis, Buddhist, and Jain teachings, as well as the Epics and Puranas. Currently, yoga is practised all over the world in the modern era. Scientists acknowledge its effectiveness as a practice.

Importance Of Yoga

The benefits of yoga are currently well-known throughout the globe. Yoga is highly beneficial and can be practised to treat various illnesses affecting the digestive system, the lungs, and the stomach. It helps cleanse our bodies of negativity and mental illnesses. It helps reduce stress levels and raise awareness.

For kids, in particular, yoga helps develop stamina and focus. It is the best medication for respiratory issues and is effective against infections and illnesses like abdominal pain. It also contributes to a person's image improvement because they naturally appear excellent and healthy if they are disease-free.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi suggested a designated day to honour yoga practice. The Indian prime minister wanted to highlight this special gift our ancestors gave us through this initiative. He made this suggestion during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2014. During his speech, he also suggested that the day be observed on June 21, the year's longest day. The UN members deliberated on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposal and quickly approved it, and the first International Yoga Day was organised on June 21, 2015.

Yoga practice is spreading quickly in foreign countries, primarily because of International Yoga Day. The celebration of International Yoga Day has been extended to every country worldwide. Additionally, many doctors advise their patients to practise yoga every day. Yoga is becoming increasingly popular, and India's soft power is expanding along with it.

Essay on International Day of Yoga 2022

Short and Long Speech on International Day of Yoga in English

I am giving below some well worded speeches of varying words length on International yoga day for my broad range of readers to help them by enhancing their knowledge on this important global event. So, let’s start reading and selecting the one perfect for you as per your need:

Speech 1 – India and International Day of Yoga

Good morning Principal Sir, respected teachers, and dear friends. I am honored to address you all on the international day of yoga, celebrated throughout the globe on 21st June.

It is indeed a moment of pride for India, for yoga is an ancient practice originated in India. India’s religious gurus and ascetics have been practicing yoga for ages. They have all been benefited by it, both physically and mentally. A few decades back, yoga became a household name in India; thanks to some yoga gurus who promoted its practice to the masses.

Then came the moment of pride for India, when the United Nations adopted a resolution declaring 21st June as the International day of yoga. Since then there is no looking back and yoga has today become a global brand. Today it is practiced by millions all throughout the globe, as enthusiastically as ever.

Let’s be a part of the change that yoga seeks to bring to our physical, mental health, and spiritual well-being. Let’s spread the glory of yoga to every corner of the world, making India more proud of her cultural heritage.

I think that I should end my speech here and begin practicing yoga with you all. Thank you and let’s begin!

Speech 2 – “Yoga for Humanity”

Good morning, respected Principal Sir, Director Sir, teachers, and my dear friends. I’m Seema of class 5 th B. I feel honored that I got the opportunity to express my views on the International Day of Yoga in front of you all.

We all know that the International Day of Yoga is celebrated on 21 st June every year all around the world. We should feel proud that yoga originated in India and is now practiced at a global level. The idea of this global celebration was given by our PM Narendra Modi back in 2014. Every year we celebrate this day with a particular theme. This year the chosen theme is “Yoga for Humanity”.

We know that the current situation in the world is very critical as it is fighting the global pandemic Covid-19. At this time, people are getting more stressed and diseases like depression are getting common. This year’s theme aimed to help people to get out of things like isolation and quarantine. Yoga helps us to stay healthy and rejuvenated. It also helps us in achieving peace of mind. In this busy lifestyle, getting a sustainable and healthy life is only possible by adopting yoga. So everyone let’s get your yoga mat and start practicing from today.

Now I would like to end my speech. Thank you everyone for hearing me with patience.

Speech 3 – International Day of Yoga: Benefits

Good morning Principal sir, respected teachers, my dear friends, and all the guests. Today is 21st June and as you all know that we have gathered here to celebrate ‘International Day of Yoga’.

How do you celebrate the international day of yoga? Of course, by performing yoga! That’s why we have gathered here. But, before we move onto our sessions I would like to tell you all, briefly on why we are doing this.

I know many of us think yoga as a kind of physical exercise that involves different postures and movements, sometimes even challenging your flexibility. I must tell you that yoga is much more than a physical exercise – it is also a mental and spiritual exercise; although, you would better understand the effects, only if you practice regularly.

There are several breathing exercises in yoga. There is a concept in yoga that states that breathing is directly related to your temper and hence your mental state. Have you ever noticed that irregular and deep breathes you take whenever you are angry or nervous?

Well yoga, seeks to reverse that effect. The modus operandi is simple yet very effective. Breathing practices in yoga seek to synchronize your breathing pattern; thereby, keeping you mentally calm and at peace with the world. Have you ever noticed the breath of a newborn child – long deep breaths of exact duration?

No anger, frustration, or inhibitions of any kind, a child is the happiest and peaceful individual in the entire world. That is what you do to you – make you childlike at least for the mental part of it.

There are many other physical benefits of yoga also, but you would better experience them if you practice yoga. I must tell you that millions across the globe practice yoga today and we all must follow.

Let’s begin a new healthy and peaceful life! Thank You!

Speech 4 – All About International Day of Yoga

Good morning everyone! It is the international day of yoga today and I see that everyone has enthusiastically occupied their places on their mats. You look so filled with energy! That’s the way to go.

Before we begin our yoga session, kindly allow me to speak a few words about the event. International Yoga Day celebrated on 21st June was established in 2015.

It was suggested by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address in the United Nations. There was also a reason behind choosing the date 21st June for the event. Any guesses? Actually, 21st June is the longest day in Northern Hemisphere and the date has its own significance in other cultures as well. Following the recommendations by the Indian Prime Minister, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution declaring 21st June as the International Day of Yoga. It was indeed a very proud moment for India as the motherland where yoga originated.

Since its inception, International yoga day has become immensely popular not only in India but also to other parts of the world as well; although, the first observance in India, had been a remarkable one.

It was distinguished in more than one way. Firstly it was the largest recorded yoga class to date. Attended by 35, 985 people, the Prime Minister himself and dignitaries from 84 nations performed various asanas for around 35 minutes. The event was hugely covered by media and broadcasted live, over the globe.

When the yoga was performed live at Rajpath, New Delhi, millions across the globe were performing it in front of their televisions. It was the largest covered event that got a global response as never before.

I am happy to announce that, within a span of 4-5 years the day has become immensely popular and is enthusiastically celebrated even in the remotest corners of the globe.

People from different countries, speaking completely different languages are united by a single cause – good health. The world has lately realized the potential in yoga – the benefit it could bring to physical and mental health.

An event like this depends on its volunteers and the truth that could drive millions to follow. There are millions of yoga teachers, instructors who are working hard to make events a success, not to mention volunteers and common yoga performers like you and me.

I am sure that one day the world will witness the goodness of yoga. Perhaps, one day there will be more healthy and mentally happy people on the planet than they are today. We all know that true happiness lies in a good state of physical and mental health. If you are healthy and have a sound mind, free from unnecessary thoughts, desires, and all – you can work wonders. Yoga guarantees just that, only if you practice regularly and in a disciplined way.

Today, millions are joining every day in the already strong force of yoga performers, volunteers, instructors, and teachers. With this huge response, I have no doubt that one day ‘yoga’ will become so popular that there would be difficult to find someone who doesn’t practice it.

Yoga is already a household name not only in India but also in several other countries. People of France, the United States, Brazil, and others are routine practicing yoga every day.

I think I have taken enough time and we should begin with our yoga session now. Let’s do this – let’s spread the glory and benefits of yoga in all the directions and be a part of it too – in fact, an active and energetic part.

Let’s practice yoga in the name of good health and peace in the world. Let’s do it!

An Introduction to Yoga

Yoga is the ancient way to attain physical, mental, and spiritual practice. Primarily originating in India, the word 'yoga' is derived from Sanskrit, meaning to unite. This unity signifies the ultimate union of the body with consciousness and thus attaining definitive peace.

Recognizing the universal appeal of Yoga, on December 11 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 to be marked as the International Day of Yoga.

It was first started by our present Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He celebrated Yoga Day for the first time on June 21 in 2015, after which Yoga Day started being celebrated all over the world on June 15, and it turned into International Yoga Day. Since then, Yoga Day has been celebrated every year by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in India.

As per the calendar, this date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere. Also, from the Yoga's perspective, this summer solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana. Dakshinayana is the six-month tenure for the sun to travel to the south on the celestial sphere in between the Summer and the Winter solstice.

In today's times, this is practised in various forms across different parts of the world and is growing more and more popular. The main aim of celebrating International Day of Yoga is to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of Yoga. However, Yoga is much more than just a mere physical activity.

As per one of the famous Yoga practitioners, late B. K. S. Iyengar, Yoga is the best way to cultivate and maintain a balanced attitude in daily life while bequeathing the best of performance skills in every action being made.

History of International Yoga Day

Yoga is a centuries-old practice that originated somewhere around 5,000 years ago in India. This was looked up as a process and technique to interconnect the mind, body and soul together and take a step closer to enlightenment. As this practice gained popularity in the West, this started to be termed an exercise and relaxation method. This was also associated with the claims to alleviate any existing physical injuries and chronic pains.

The idea to mark June 21 as International Yoga Day was first proposed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014. It was during his UN General Assembly speech where the resolution was introduced by India's Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, to June 21 as International Yoga Day.

On June 21, 2015, i.e., when this day was first celebrated, more than 36,000 people from all over India joined Prime Minister Modi to perform 21 yoga postures, also called asanas, for 35 minutes at Rajpath, New Delhi. Shri Narendra Modi was further joined by other high-profile political and famous leaders across the globe.

In his speech given in the UN, the current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, gave the idea of making International Yoga important.

He said in his speech," Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but discovering the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. Changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness can help in well-being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

With this, the UN Assembly accepted this proposal and decided to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 every year. Also, there are several exercises being organized in the schools like writing International Yoga Day Essays for students in English and other vernacular languages.

Significance of Yoga

Shiva, also known as Adiyogi, is considered the originator and creator of Yoga. This was further brought to the masses by the Saptarishis. Then, seven people were impressed by his level of determination, so they decided to learn from him, and they sat still for more than 84 years.

Spirit of togetherness

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India and is now practiced in various forms around the world.

The word 'yoga' derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Inaugurating the event, the President of the UN General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid , noted that as the COVID-19 pandemic has upended lives and livelihoods, triggering a deluge of anxiety and depression, “the practice of yoga serves as a holistic approach to the physical, mental and spiritual health and well-being of humanity.”

“It simply works.”

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti said that during the difficult times of the pandemic, millions embraced yoga as their companion, to stay healthy, overcome depression and mental anxiety and it is in recognition of this important role of yoga that the theme for this year's celebration is ‘Yoga for Humanity’.

“ Yoga can also be an integral part of our build back better strategy ”, he said.

North Lawn return

Organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, this was a first in-person yoga day celebration after a hiatus of two years due to pandemic induced restrictions.

The event titled “Yoga with the Masters” featured introduction to basic yoga practices and their demonstration by renowned Yoga experts, a yoga dance by the group Indian Raga, pranayama breathing by Isha Yoga, yoga asanas by Bhakti Center, and a meditation workshop by the Integral Yoga Institute.

Highlighting the benefits, Sam Chase, an Instructor at Isha Yoga said, “Yoga is about being in an experience in which you and the rest of the existence are not separate things. Now, if you do the yoga practices, definitely these benefits will come, you will become more mentally balanced, you will become physically healthy.”

Sam Chase, an instructor at Isha Yoga institute.

“But it's a little bit like driving an airplane around on the streets. Yes, you can use it as a bus if you want, but yoga has the potential to take you into the sky .”

Practicing yoga since the age of 15, Kishore Chandra of Bhakti Center was thrilled to be back at the UN headquarters.

Speaking to UN News, he said, “I feel really good being back on the lawn, because in 2019 it was raining, and we did it inside the General Assembly, and so it’s been since 2018 that we’ve been out here… there’s nothing like being in person out here with everyone .”

“ Yoga is really a way of life , it’s not just the asanas, the asanas are part of it, but for me it means a way of life, because asanas help you get something special, which is peace of mind.”

Recognizing the universal appeal of yoga, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the annual International Day of Yoga in 2014, with the adoption of General Assembly resolution 69/131.

The resolution underscored that global health is a long-term development objective that requires closer international cooperation through the exchange of best practices aimed at building better individual lifestyles devoid of excesses of all kinds.

Kishore Chandra of Bhakti Centre demonstrates a yoga asana at UN Headquarters in New York City.

It recognized that yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being.

In this regard, the World Health Organization has also urged its member states to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity, which is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide, and a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes.

The President of General Assembly reminded that yoga is all about unity: connecting the mind, body and spirit.

Improving global health is our long-term objective. Today’s celebration therefore is also an opportunity to promote more sustainable lifestyles and a healthier outlook on life .”

He highlighted the power of yoga as the power of unity for a healthier, happier and prosperous future for all

Role of the UN

Integral Yoga Institute’s Kali Morse, led a meditation workshop, stressing the important role the UN can play, in spreading awareness about the multifaceted benefits of yoga.

“ The fact that it is at the UN, I think is monumental, because the UN has always been a place, where hopefully, we can bring people together to make decisions that are for humanity.”

Kali Morse is an instructor at Integral Yoga Institute and led a meditation workshop during the event at UN Headquarters.

She said it’s crucial to “have an international day of yoga, where you can connect people, and then have speakers that talk about how we can serve humanity, and act as human beings, throughout the world, to avoid more war and unrest.”

Healthy lives and wellbeing have also been recognized as an essential aspect of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development .

A path for sustainable living

Practitioners believe that the essence of yoga is balance and therefore it can be an important instrument for promoting sustainable lifestyle in harmony with planet Earth.

Sam Chase of Isha Yoga pointed out how we have always gone on about trying to fix humanity by saying what is right, what is wrong, but yoga doesn’t approach it like that.

“If you come to an experience where everyone around you and everything around you is a part of you, then nobody has to teach you what is right, what is wrong. You will treat people around you, you’ll treat the Earth around you with a great deal of respect, because it is a part of you .”

He emphasized that more than ever, especially given the variety of environmental crises going on in the world, we have to come together as people, and ensure that our planet doesn’t disappear on us.

The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the two Sanskrit words ‘Yuj’ and ‘Yujir’. In Vedas, they have the meanings ‘to unite’, ‘to join together' or ‘connection’. History, Development And Origin

The origin of yoga is traced back thousands of years ago when no religion or religious beliefs were inherited by humans. In the Vedas, the god Shiva is portrayed as the first yogi or Adiyogi, and the first Guru or Adi Guru. The Adiyogi passed on his knowledge of yoga to the Saptarishis or "seven sages”. This powerful yogic science was carried by the seven sages to the whole world. They travelled to Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa and South America and other parts of the world to impart their knowledge of yogic science.

In the Indian sub-continent, the culture of yoga travelled through the sages Agastya, the Saptarishi, who drew this culture into Indian traditions.

The beginnings of Yoga were developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization. The most renowned Yogic scriptures are the Bhagavad- Gita which was drafted around 500 B.C.E. The pre-Vedic period around 2700 B.C. has traces of Yoga.

Then, the science of yoga landed on the classical stage, which was the time period between 500 B.C. to 800 A.D. Patanjali’s Yoga- Sutras define the classical period. During this period only, the concept of Five vows – Pancha Mahavrata and Astha Magga or eightfold path came into existence.

Then, in the post-classical era, yogic developed Tantra yoga, which cleanses the body and the mind to help us break the knot which ties our inner soul to our physical existence.

The modern period of yogic science began in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This period saw the contribution of various yogis to the development of Raja Yoga.

Yoga is practised all over the world in contemporary times, to promote health and development of body and soul.

PM #YogaDay — PMO India (@PMOIndia) June 21, 2021
PM #YogaDay — PMO India (@PMOIndia) June 21, 2021
PM @narendramodi #YogaDay — PMO India (@PMOIndia) June 21, 2021
योग हमें स्ट्रेस से स्ट्रेंथ और नेगेटिविटी से क्रिएटिविटी का रास्ता दिखाता है। योग हमें अवसाद से उमंग और प्रमाद से प्रसाद तक ले जाता है: PM @narendramodi #YogaDay — PMO India (@PMOIndia) June 21, 2021
If there are threats to humanity, Yoga often gives us a way of holistic health. Yoga also gives us a happier way of life. I am sure, Yoga will continue playing its preventive, as well as promotive role in healthcare of masses: PM @narendramodi #YogaDay — PMO India (@PMOIndia) June 21, 2021
PM @narendramodi #YogaDay — PMO India (@PMOIndia) June 21, 2021
PM @narendramodi #YogaDay — PMO India (@PMOIndia) June 21, 2021

'Incredible India': UNGA President Dennis Francis lauds digitalisation, infrastructure investment in India

Nm on the go

...

The following is the first part of the interview with the Prime Minister.

The Assam Tribune: As you have been visiting the North East for years, we presume that you are quite aware of the problems and challenges facing the region. Which of the problems you could solve in your ten-year tenure as the Prime Minister of India?

Prime Minister: For decades after Independence, the Northeastern states were relegated to the margins. Successive Congress governments gave step-motherly treatment to the people of the Northeast because for them the potential electoral gains in the region were too little. For them, the Northeast was too distant and working for its development was also difficult.

When we formed the government, it was my firm commitment to change the status quo in the Northeast. We replaced the policy of isolation and ig norance with a policy of integration. In the last 10 years, it is visible how we have ended the Northeast’s isolation and developed it as Bharat’s gateway to the East. I have visited the Northeast nearly 70 times, which is probably more than the total number of visits made by all the Prime Ministers before me. Since 2015, Union Ministers have visited the North east more than 680 times. We have changed the perception that the Northeast is far by taking govern ance at the doorstep of people. Aaj Northeast Na Delhi se Door Hai Aur Na Dil se Door Hai!

Today, the Northeast has emerged as New India’s greatest success story. It has shown the world: Jab Neeyat sahi hoti hai, to Nateeje bhi sahi hote hai.

In the last five years, the investments we made towards the development of the region are nearly four times more than the funds allocated by the Con gress government or any other previ ous government in the past. The infrastructural development that has taken place in the last decade has con nected the region with the rest of the country and the world like never before.

We fulfilled long-awaited critical con nectivity projects such as Bogibeel Bridge and Bhupen Hazarika Setu that have eased people’s lives. Recently, I had the opportunity to inaugurate the Sela Tunnel, which has been built at a height of 13,000 ft. It will provide all-weather connectivity to the border areas.

It was our government that had laid its foundation stone in 2019. So, you can see the speed and scale of our work.

I have trust in the Yuva Shakti of Northeast, their talent, their skill and their energy. We have opened the doors for them in education, sports, entre preneurship and many other areas.

Since 2014, more than Rs 14,000 crore has been spent to promote higher education in the Northeast.

The country’s first Sports University has been opened in Manipur. We are building more than 200 Khelo India centres across the 8 states.

More than 4,000 startups have emerged from this region in the last decade.

Agriculture is flourishing in the re gion, with the export of fruits, organ ic farming, and Mission Oil Palm bringing great prosperity.

Today, the Northeast is leading from the front in all sectors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi with The Assam Tribune scribe R Dutta Choudhary

AT: Insurgency is one of the major problems facing the North East region and during your tenure as the Prime Minister, most of the insurgent groups of Assam and some in other states of the region have laid down arms. What steps are you taking to root out insurgency from the region?

PM: There was a long history of insurgencies, infiltration and institutional neglect.

Yes, we decided to deal with insurgency firmly but at the same time, we ensured that common people are embraced with great care and compassion.

As a result, while we have significantly controlled insurgency, we have also been able to win the trust of our people and ensure peace.

A total of 11 peace agreements have been signed in the last 10 years. This is unprecedented progress unseen under any previous government. More than 9,500 insurgents have surrendered since 2014 and joined the mainstream of the society. Due to the relentless efforts of our government, the entire Northeast is now witnessing a significant improvement in the security situation since 2014. Compared to 2014, there has been a 71 per cent reduction in insurgency incidents in 2023. Similarly, in this period, security force casualties have come down by 60 per cent and civilian deaths by 82 per cent. Due to the improved security situation, the AFSPA has been withdrawn from most parts of the Northeast. We have successfully negotiated Border Dispute Settlement Agreements between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh which has put an end to the longstanding dispute concerning 123 villages along the border. We have resolved the 50-year-old dispute between Assam and Meghalaya. Peace agreements like the Bodo Accord and the Bru-Reang Agreement have led to several insurgents and militants surrendering their arms and joining the mainstream. We have strengthened Autonomous Councils to accelerate the development process for the welfare of Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities through democratic decentralization of power through Constitutional amendment. We have launched schemes aimed at rehabilitating insurgents, facilitating their transition into mainstream society through financial support and comprehensive rehabilitation processes. We have put an end to the era of blockades in the Northeast which caused great inconvenience to everyone and hampered the region’s development. All the efforts we have made have ushered in an era of peace in the region.

AT: Communication bottleneck is one of the major problems for the Northeast region. What steps are you taking to deal with the issue?

PM: Given the Northeast’s strategic location, our vision is that the region should be developed as a base for India’s growing economic links while also ensuring that the aspirations of the people are fulfilled. Yes, there were problems. But we focused on the solutions. Today, the Northeast is seeing improved infrastructure connectivity, whether it is roadways or railways, airways or waterways. Even in the remotest corners of the region, 5G connectivity is being established. Border villages are now part of the Vibrant Villages Program, demonstrating how last-mile connectivity is reaching the unreached. We’ve transformed the Northeast from an ”abandoned region” to an “abundant region” with over Rs 5 lakh crore spent by Ministries of the Government of India over the last 10 years. In the last 10 years, many firsts have happened in the Northeast: Many parts of the Northeast are getting connected by rail service for the first time. Meghalaya came on India’s rail network after 67 years of Independence. Nagaland has now got its second railway station after 100 years. The first goods train reached Rani Gaidinliu railway station in Manipur. The Northeast got its first semi high-speed train. Sikkim got its first airport. Just imagine the scarcity created and the level of neglect by the previous governments. The number of airports has increased from 9 to 17, operationalizing 74 routes under the UDAN scheme. Before 2014 there was only one national waterway in the Northeast. Now 5 waterways are operational. Hundreds of towers are covering villages to improve mobile connectivity. You would be happy to know that Agartala has an International Internet Gateway (IIG). It is the third center in the country to have such a gate way after Mumbai and Chennai. The Northeast’s development is also integral to our Act East Policy. We have been consistently working on connecting South East Asia with the Northeast through major projects be it India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway or Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project. I firmly believe that the path to Viksit Bharat runs through the development of our Ashtalakshmi states of the Northeast.

AT: China has been claiming parts of Arunachal Pradesh for years and from time to time the Chinese raise the issue. Is Arunachal Pradesh safe? What steps are you taking to ensure that every inch of the state remains within India?

PM: I do not understand why The Assam Tribune should have any doubt about this. Arunachal Pradesh is, was and shall always be an integral part of Bharat. Today, the development works are reaching Arunachal and the Northeast like the first rays of the sun, faster than ever before. Last month, I visited Itanagar for Viksit Bharat, Viksit North East programme. I had the privilege to unveil Rs 55,000 crore worth of development projects that are providing guarantees for Viksit North East. Around 35,000 families in Arunachal Pradesh got their pucca houses, and 45,000 households benefited from the drinking water supply project. I inaugurated the Sela Tunnel which is a real strategic game-changer providing all-weather connectivity to Tawang. In 2022, we inaugurated the Donyi Polo Airport for enhanced air linkages to the rest of the nation. On the energy front, the Dibang Multipurpose Project will contribute to employment, energy and water resource management. We have commenced new road projects for about 125 villages and tourism and other infrastructure-related projects in 150 villages. The government has also launched a Rs 10,000 crore UNNATI scheme that will bring new possibilities for investment and jobs in the North Eastern Region.

AT: How do you rate the situation in Manipur and what steps are being proposed to ensure ethnic harmony in the state? You were criticized by the opposition for the Manipur issue. Would you like to comment on that?

PM: We believe that it is our collective responsibility to deal with the situation sensitively. I have already spoken about this in the Parliament. We’ve dedicated our best resources and administrative machinery to resolving the conflict. Because of the timely intervention of the Government of India and efforts made by the Government of Manipur, there has been a marked improvement in the situation of the State. Home Minister Amit Shah stayed in Manipur while the conflict was at its peak, holding 15-plus meetings with various stakeholders to help resolve the conflict. The Central Government has been consistently extending its support, as required by the State Government. The process of relief and rehabilitation is ongoing. Remedial measures undertaken include a financial package for the relief and rehabilitation of people living in shelter camps in the State.

AT: The framework agreement with NSCN(IM) was signed in your presence way back in 2015. When can we expect the final solution?

PM: As a result of initiatives taken by our Government, a Framework Agreement was signed with the NSCN/Isak Muivah Group of Naga land on August 3, 2015, for a permanent solution to decades-old Naga political problems. This agreement lays down broad principles within which the final agreement will be worked out. The Official Representative of the Government of India is holding talks with NSCN(IM) and other Naga groups. The Government of India is making all possible efforts to successfully conclude the peace talks with Naga groups at the earliest.

AT: Of late, Mizoram has been facing trouble because of infiltration from Myanmar. What steps is the Government taking in this regard?

PM: As you are aware, this influx of Myanmar nationals into India is largely due to the internal developments in Myanmar. We have been raising this issue with the Myanmar authorities as this directly impacts India, particularly our Northeastern states. To prevent infiltration and secure our borders, several steps have been taken by the Government. These steps include the decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime between India and Myanmar, increased and effective deployment of Border Guarding Forces on the Indo-Myanmar border, Close coordination amongst various security agencies, etc. The Government of India has started construction of fencing on feasible patches along the Indo-Myanmar Border. The Government of India has urged the Government of Mizoram to take up a campaign for the capture of biometric data of illegal migrants in the state. The Government of India has also been providing devices and necessary assistance to the state government to carry out a biometric capture plan. We are bringing about policy changes to adjust to the changing realities on the ground. We want to see peace and stability return to Myanmar at the earliest so that these people can return to their home country peacefully.

Speech on yoga and health – what is yoga, speech on yoga and its history, benefits of yoga, short speech on types of yoga, frequently asked questions on yoga.

What is health? Is it the state of being free from all the physical inconveniences? Is health only related to our physical body?

No, not at all. We can define health as the state of being free from any illness. Just like the human body requires pharmaceutical medicines for preventing or curing diseases, our mind requires the assistance of yoga for its healing processes. In simpler terms, we can define yoga as a physical activity for bridging the gap between the mind (soul) and the physical body. It can be considered as an amalgamated version of art and science that helps individuals to lead a tranquil and healthy lifestyle.

Yoga is an ancient practice involving the mind and body for promoting the mental and physical well-being of individuals. It is believed that the origin of yoga is in India. The main processes involved in yoga are meditation, physical movements, gestures, and some breathing techniques. For getting good health results from yoga, it is essential to follow the perfect physical poses and breath control exercises. A regular follow up of all these activities is mandatory for getting the best results.

Regular yoga practice will foster endurance, flexibility, peacefulness, physical strength and ultimately provide happiness to the individual performer. Dedication and concentration are two inevitable parts of yoga. One must completely dedicate oneself to this process for experiencing a holistic improvement in both physical and mental health.

Sample Speeches on Yoga

A few samples of speeches on yoga are given below. Please go through them for your better understanding of the topic.

Every single time we hear the term ’yoga’, the very first image that comes to our minds will be that of a highly flexible individual performing some daring asanas (body postures). Then most probably, it will be the image of an individual in white dress sitting peacefully on a yoga mat placed in the centre of a dark green lawn with dewdrops shining like gems in the pure yellow morning sunlight.. What a rejuvenating scene, right?

These days, the practice of yoga is gaining a lot of acceptance from people all over the world. Have you ever wondered why? What is the reason behind this increased attention? Why is the world now celebrating the International Day of Yoga in June every year?

Let’s remember the words of Marcus Garvey, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots”. So let’s strengthen our roots.

The very first mention of the word ‘yoga’ is in the ‘Rig Veda’, an ancient Indian collection of Vedic texts. It is believed that the ‘Rig Veda’ is one of the oldest books in the world, written eight to ten thousand years ago. The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’. ‘Yuj’ means ‘union’ or ‘to join’. Therefore, from the meaning of the word itself, the idea is comprehensible. That is, yoga is the union of the individual’s body and the universe. Everyone can do yoga. You do not have to get frightened by the several yoga terminologies you hear or the tangled poses you see.

Performing yoga provides multiple benefits for individuals. There are both physical and mental benefits. Regular practice of yoga will help to increase human body muscle strength. Performing asanas will remove the unwanted fat deposits around the stomach and waist. It will also enhance the performance of all our organs, making us stay active 24×7. Yoga helps to improve flexibility. By performing yoga on a regular basis, individuals can move their body parts in all the possible directions as they wish; their body will no longer resist the flow or cause troubles for their movements. The ability to stretch the human body improves the balance of our body, and also offers multiple physical and mental benefits. Yoga promotes better breathing. When we deeply focus on breathing while performing asanas, without our conscious awareness, our control of the process of breathing shifts slowly from the medulla oblongata to the cerebral cortex improves. As this shift happens, our mind gets much calmer. This is what biologically happens when we focus on breathing while performing yoga. As a result, the energy (prana) starts its free flow. It breaks all the emotional and physical blockages that our body has and thus frees our body and mind. Furthermore, it helps to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. It encourages the relaxation of the human mind and body. Many physical postures that we follow while performing yoga are not done only to enhance the flexibility of our body, but also plays a vital role in relieving tensions and other sorrows. By performing yoga, the human body gets prompted to release hormones called ‘endorphins’. Endorphins are the hormones produced by the action of the pituitary gland and central nervous system. These hormones can also be called the feel-good hormones — they are our body’s natural pain relievers. So it is better to try performing it regularly for a better, peaceful and happy living.

Even though ‘yoga’ has evolved a lot from its ancient form, its base is still the same. There exists multiple options for individuals to choose from in yoga. Yoga is available to us in various styles. Modern-day yoga offers individuals to make their choice based on the goal they expect by performing yoga on a regular basis. Some of the popular types of yoga are Ashtanga yoga, Bikram yoga, Hatha yoga, Iyengar yoga, Kripalu yoga, Kundalini yoga, Power yoga, Sivananda, Viniyoga, and Prenatal yoga. People worldwide are trying to learn yoga with the motive of enjoying a healthy life. Learning and practising yoga is not expensive, and it is a very comfortable physical exercise. No heavy machines or expensive tools are required for doing yoga. So stop finding excuses and try to start practising it as soon as possible. Your body will love it.
