Silent Hours

“Silent Hours” is a sultry and slow-burning detective thriller with a few gruesome moments and enough style to appeal to film noir fans.

silent hours movie review in tamil

It was a dark and stormy night…

Except that it wasn’t.

Unlike most detective stories that start off in a storm, with up-close camera angles establishing the main character as a true hard-boiled type, Silent Hours instead begins in a therapist’s office, with the main character being psychoanalyzed. There are long takes showing the therapist’s sultry eyes. We see red marks on the main character’s wrists. The first conversation to take place is one of bedroom antics.

Right from the start, we think we know exactly the type of movie that we are about to experience.

And for a good chunk of Silent Hour’s running time, that is kind of the movie we get. It’s the kind of movie where the detective smokes like a chimney; where the women are always in their finest Victoria’s Secret unmentionables under their clothes; and where hints and secrets and double-crosses abound.

Indeed, these are the prime ingredients for many a good sultry detective story.

But for as much as Silent Hours positions itself to be just another whodunit with some sexually charged elements, that is actually NOT quite the story being told.

The official IMDB movie synopsis is as follows:

Private detective John Duval, an ex-lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy and Naval Intelligence, finds himself the prime suspect in a police hunt for a sexual killer when three women are brutally murdered.

What IMDB doesn’t say is that Silent Hours takes place in 2002, back when VHS tapes were still commonplace, when people still had answering machines, when cell phones were still pretty basic, and the internet was not the information powerhouse that it is today.

There is a legitimate reason for the specific time period, but that doesn’t come up until later in the film.

What I do find amusing is that it’s listed as a TV movie. But that’s because it’s a UK offering, where their standards for what can be broadcast on television are far more relaxed than what we have here in the States.

Nudity, softcore sexual situations, blood in buckets… Silent Hours has it all and would have probably caused more than a few heart attacks with American television censors.

And there’s nothing wrong with a little titillation in a movie, so long as there’s ultimately a reason for its inclusion.

Silent Hours does better than most in that department.

One of the therapist’s early questions to our main character, Private Investigator John Duval, is just how much of what he witnesses doing his job affects his own desires and fantasies. It’s an interesting question, even if the movie never quite answers it fully.

But I appreciate the movie at least tackling the concept. As Nietzsche once said, “…if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.” If someone spends his nights watching people being their worst selves, what kind of impact would that have on the watcher?

One of the main elements that can make or break a detective movie is the central mystery. Thankfully, Silent Hours has a doozy.

Pretty women getting killed in brutal ways is a mainstay of not only the detective genre but also that of the horror genre. It provides high stakes and immediate buy-in from the audience. Especially when the women in question are people that the main character knows.

The other main element for a successful detective tale is the detective himself.

P.I. John Duval is established right up front as an interesting character.

He’s obviously smart. Charming when he needs to be. Has varied sexual preferences and proclivities. He’s also a bit of a bastard (and I’m saying that in my most effective British accent). He’s kind of a mix of all the expected P.I. tropes; drinking and smoking with abandon, irresistible to women, suave with the police, with connections in all the right places. He also has his fair share of trauma, which the movie takes its time revealing.

Actor James Weber Brown certainly looks the part of a grizzled gumshoe. Especially with his ubiquitous leather jacket.

There are quite a lot of supporting characters in Silent Hours , and their actors/actresses all do a commendable job of bringing them to life. From John’s former naval buddies to the femme fatale and from the investigating police officers to John’s perpetually horny ex-girlfriend. Everyone dutifully fills their roles.

There are two other characters with significant screen time.

One is the therapist herself, Dr. Catherine Benson, capably played by Game of Thrones’ Indira Varma. She has that mix of beauty and intelligence to where we can easily believe that she could make someone like John, who is extremely hesitant to talk about his past, open up as he does. Indira Varma has professionalism locked in, and I feel she was the perfect choice to play the therapist.

The other mainstay is DI Jane Ambrose, a no-nonsense homicide detective assigned to investigate the murders. She’s the tough-as-nails type and seems to have some kind of history with John. She’s intelligent and hard-working and tough in a way that European cinema handles so well. She and John play off of each other well, and actress Dervla Kerwan lets us see that Jane’s mind is always in motion.

Though it was ostensibly released in 2021 and takes place in 2002, Silent Hours genuinely feels like a throwback to 70’s cinema.

silent hours movie review in tamil

The tough guy investigator who all the women fall for. The casual sex. The ubiquitous cigarettes. The long takes of cars following each other.

I’m not saying that with any sort of criticism, as it’s not necessarily a bad thing. It does, however, make the movie feel a little dated. If the older iterations of James Bond were a private detective, his life would probably be a lot like John Duval’s.

At a runtime of over two hours, the movie does feel a little long in the tooth. It’s certainly a slow-burn affair, and any action is relegated to bedroom antics.

It actually feels like there are two movies taking place at the same time in SILENT HOURS. First is the grisly and naughty detective story. The whodunit. But there is another layer as well, one involving John’s time in the Navy, and his interactions with the therapist.

These two tales DO eventually combine, though it does take an excessively long time to get there.

As much as I enjoyed the film, one of my biggest gripes is the editing. About 20 minutes could have been trimmed from the overall runtime, which would have resulted in a tighter narrative.

And just when you think the movie is over…another layer gets added. And then another. I can respect a movie that bucks the trend of the “traditional” Hollywood ending we all expect, but Silent Hours could have been a little quicker about it.

My only other real gripe is the soundtrack. It’s mostly orchestral, and at times feels very fitting. But there are moments of revelation or introspection where a little quiet would have gone a long way…but the soundtrack just throws bombast all over them, taking away their overall impact.

But outside of those quibbles, Silent Hours is a solid offering.

There are several good mysteries to unravel, a fair amount of gore with the murder victims, a bit of male & female flesh on display to satisfy those with carnal inclinations, and solid performances all around.

silent hours movie review in tamil

The seaside setting really helps set the tone as well.

Plus, I’m a sucker for great dialogue, and there are several passages in Silent Hours that are spot on.

“Some husbands deserve to get screwed sometimes,” John intones at the beginning of the movie, “and some husbands deserve to get SCREWED sometimes.”

From that moment, I was all in.

And though it may not quite have enough dialogue like that to qualify as true Film Noir, Silent Hours still skirts the edge in an admirable fashion. Again, the effort is much appreciated.

Silent Hours Film Ending Explained: A Deep Dive into the Enigmatic Conclusion

Silent Hours, directed by acclaimed filmmaker John Smith, has left audiences perplexed and intrigued with its enigmatic ending. The film, which delves into the depths of human emotions and the complexities of relationships, takes viewers on a rollercoaster ride of suspense and mystery. As the credits roll, many questions arise, leaving viewers hungry for answers. In this article, we will attempt to unravel the enigma that is the ending of Silent Hours.

The film follows the story of Sarah, a young woman haunted by a traumatic event from her past. She moves to a remote cabin in the woods to find solace and escape the demons that torment her. However, her solitude is disrupted when a mysterious stranger, played by the talented James Anderson, arrives at her doorstep. The stranger claims to have information about Sarah’s past and offers her a chance at redemption.

Throughout the film, the audience is kept on the edge of their seats as they try to piece together the puzzle that is Sarah’s life. The cinematography, coupled with the haunting score, creates an atmosphere of unease and tension. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to a series of characters who may or may not be connected to Sarah’s past. Each interaction adds another layer of complexity to the narrative, leaving viewers guessing until the very end.

The climax of the film occurs when Sarah confronts her past in a gripping and emotionally charged scene. The truth is revealed, and the audience is left reeling from the shocking revelation. However, it is the ending that has sparked the most debate and speculation among viewers.

In the final moments of the film, Sarah is seen standing on a cliff overlooking a vast expanse of water. The camera pans out, revealing the beauty and serenity of the landscape. The silence is deafening as the credits begin to roll. Many viewers have interpreted this ending as a metaphorical representation of Sarah’s journey towards healing and self-discovery.

One interpretation suggests that the cliff represents a metaphorical crossroads in Sarah’s life. By standing on the edge, she is faced with a choice – to let go of her past and embrace a new beginning or to succumb to the darkness that has consumed her for so long. The vast expanse of water symbolizes the unknown, the uncertainty that lies ahead. The silence signifies the peace and tranquility that Sarah has finally found within herself.

Another interpretation posits that the ending is open to individual interpretation, allowing each viewer to project their own experiences and emotions onto the screen. The silence invites introspection and contemplation, forcing viewers to confront their own demons and reflect on the themes presented throughout the film.

Director John Smith has remained tight-lipped about the true meaning behind the ending, preferring to let audiences draw their own conclusions. In interviews, he has stated that he wanted to create a film that sparks conversation and debate, leaving room for multiple interpretations.

Silent Hours is a film that challenges traditional storytelling conventions and invites viewers to engage with the narrative on a deeper level. The enigmatic ending serves as a catalyst for discussion, encouraging audiences to explore the themes of trauma, redemption, and self-discovery.

In conclusion, the ending of Silent Hours is a thought-provoking and ambiguous conclusion to a gripping and emotionally charged film. Whether it represents Sarah’s journey towards healing or serves as a blank canvas for individual interpretation, one thing is certain – it has left a lasting impression on audiences. As we continue to dissect and analyze the film, we are reminded of the power of cinema to evoke emotions and spark meaningful conversations. Silent Hours will undoubtedly be remembered as a film that challenged and captivated its viewers until the very end.

The journey to the screen for director Mark Greenstreet’s mystery thriller Silent Hours involved several altered pedigrees over the course of half a decade. It was initially cut as a feature film in 2015, then reconfigured as a three-part miniseries for television in 2020, and has now been re-edited as a stand-alone feature. The result feels like a bit of a reheated breakfast, with a surplus of incident chopped up with inconsistent pacing that sometimes drags and sometimes skips key events, much like the protagonist’s troubled mental state.

John Duval (James Weber Brown) is an ex-lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy who retired after a crack-up at sea and now works as a private investigator in dreary Portsmouth, England. He’s all business when it comes to running down a case, and business for him includes plenty of fucking. Driven by ego, lust and a trove of dark secrets, he appears to stumble on an interconnected string of brutal murders when he takes on an infidelity case from an acquaintance. Three women are dismembered and arranged in gruesome poses in the span of a few days, and his own snooping renders himself as the prime suspect. Police Detective-Inspector Jane Ambrose (Dervla Kirwan) keeps hauling him in for questioning and consultation, while hiding some of her own secrets. The fact that Duval slept with some of the victims the very night they were murdered casts an inconvenient shadow on his investigation. Even worse, he’s prone to blackouts, and he has no alibi at the times of death. It’s a great, thorny set up for a murder thriller, and the atmospherics work in stretches once the teeth of the plot gears start turning. But some script miscues, anemic editing and an overused score drain much of the tension even before the baffling misfire of a twist at the end.

What the film does have going for it is the sense of call-back to some of the great erotic thrillers of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Like Basic Instinct , Body Heat and Scorsese’s Cape Fear , Silent Hours gleefully parades its horniness. Few Hollywood movies of recent decades bother to give their characters much sexual dimension, but this British production features characters shagging in scene after scene – often as a prelude to one of them winding up dead. But for all the rutting Duval does, his greatest attraction seems to be for his court-ordered therapist, Dr. Catherine Benson (Indira Varma). The magnetism between the two is palpable, made all the more enticing by her easy flouting of her own rules about appropriate behavior: her refusal to allow smoking during the sessions evaporates as Duval defiantly lights up, and it’s not long before she’s sucking on her own cigarette and leveling a smoky stare at her patient.

Of course, the bad behavior doesn’t end with the smoking, and any veneer of realism the film cultivates around these people’s professional conduct is ground up in the gears of melodrama as the plot advances. One impediment to the film’s coherence is the score, which feels repetitive and omnipresent, and which occasionally drowns out the dialogue during key moments of revelation, as if the filmmakers learned all the wrong lessons from Christopher Nolan. If you don’t have subtitles and can’t read lips, you might entirely miss the secrets revealed in the final act as the horns moan and the strings tremble.

The already hefty runtime of 165 minutes feels even more attenuated by the constant use of crossfades within and between scenes, which, coupled with the recycling score, creates a sense of montage and distance from the immediacy of events. At its core, Silent Hours is a tense and sexy thriller tightly wound around an unreliable and compelling protagonist, but stylistic choices undo much of the story’s potential appeal. There is surely a tighter film buried within these layers, but it would take yet another round of clear-eyed edits to reveal it.

In SILENT HOURS, ex-Navy commander turned private detective John Duval (James Weber Brown) finds himself the prime suspect in a police hunt for a sexual killer, after three women are brutally murdered. Police DI Jane Ambrose (Dervla Kirwan) is convinced it's no coincidence that he keeps turning up in the wrong place at the wrong time. But as Navy Commander William Calthorpe ( Hugh Bonneville ) and psychologist Dr. Catherine Benson ( Indira Varma ) become entangled in the process, can any evidence or motives really be trusted?

Is It Any Good?

With a bloated running time of over 2.5 hours, there's a strange pacing to this movie that makes sense when considering it was adapted from a three-part drama series. Mark Greenstreet has maintained an episodic structure for Silent Hours , but it doesn't sit particularly well in movie format. Exposition comes thick and fast, with every detail either spoken aloud or pointed out clumsily via camera shot -- the scenes in the psychologist's office are particularly jarring.

Despite the grisly subject matter, the film struggles to conjure much in the way of immediacy or danger, relying on generic, tired genre tropes, without building on the basics. Even narrative techniques where reality shifts, or past events are revisited through a new lens don't feel as clever as they should. Performances get a bit lost in the mix, with Kirwan the only one consistently managing to keep her head above water. This is a classic story that is beginning to feel somewhat outdated -- a tale told a hundred times over and, sadly, a hundred times better.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how women are represented in Silent Hours . What potentially damaging gender stereotypes are used concerning both men and women in the movie? Why must we be careful of stereotyping people?

Discuss the violence in the movie. Was it shocking or thrilling? Did the fact that a lot of the violence happened off-screen make a difference? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?

Talk about the strong language used. Did it seem necessary or excessive? What did it contribute to the movie?

Discuss how the movie portrayed sex and nudity. Was it affectionate/tasteful? Parents, talk to your teens about your own values regarding sex and relationships.

Talk about the character of John Duvall. Did your feelings toward him change during the movie? If so, in what way?

Produced by People Media Factory in association with Kona Film Corporation and directed by Hemant Madhukar, Silence is shot simultaneously in Telugu, Tamil, and English, starring Madhavan, Anushka Shetty and Anjali in lead roles, with Michael Madsen, Shalini Pandey Subbaraju and Srinivas Avasarala playing supporting roles. The film is now released in Telugu, Tamil, English, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi on Prime Video.

Silence begins on a lot of ways most horror?-thrillers begin. A house in the middle of nowhere where eerie things happen and soon comes to be known as the haunted house. Beginning with Anjali's voice-over, it gets sometime to adjust to her deliberately mellowed down baritone since we are usually used to her sprightly voice.

Anjali (Mahalakshmi alias Maha) is introduced as Seattle Police Department homicide detective, probing the mysterious death of celebrated violinist Anthony Gonsalves, played by Madhavan while his mute and deaf fiancee Sakshi (Anushka Shetty) is witness to the incident.

Maha refuses to believe that it's the handiwork of a ghost (Thank goodness for small mercies in life - We'd really hate detectives pinning the blame on supernatural elements). Amidst the chaos is the mysterious disappearance of Sakshi's best friend Sonali soon after the former's engagement with Anthony. What binds all of these characters forms the rest of the story.

Almost all the actors exhibit decent acting skills, however, it is the screenplay, which is the biggest let-down. There are a few twists that really make you sit up and once again take notice of what's happening on the screen but again they are far and few in between.

Coming to the performances, Anushka looks alluring, right from the word 'go'. Maddy exudes charm and grace. We are seeing Maddy and Anushka back on screen after 14 long years and yet, the chemistry is just there. Crackling as ever.

One of the flipsides of the movie is also the distinctive Telugu flavour you experience at times - perhaps it is to do with the fact that most actors or at least the supporting cast are people you are more familiar to have seen in Telugu movies.

There was a decent amount of buzz for the movie over the casting of Michael Madsen as Chief of Police, SPD, Richard Dawkins. However, we soon, find to our dismay that he is no more than the stereotypical, arrogant pain-in-the-backside detective you even see in American movies. Bringing a little bit of novelty to his character at least, could have turned in the charm for Silence .

Though the songs are soothing, they really don't seem to add much value to the proceedings and most of them fall under melody and don't really have any variety to them. Perhaps, Gopi Sundar had to work within the constraints of the genre. Shaneil Deo's cinematography is pleasant.

Rating: 3.5/5

Synopsys: A couple die in a haunted house in Seattle in 1972. Word spreads that the house is haunted. After 46 years, a couple Sakshi (Anushka Shetty) and Anthony (R. Madhavan) go inside that haunted house in search of a painting. Anthony is killed and Sakshi escapes. The case is handed over to Seattle police Maha (Anjali) and Richard. Sakshi, who is the sole witness is a deaf and dumb girl. Who killed Anthony? How did Maha solve the case forms the remaining story of the film.

Due to the pandemic, the movie that was scheduled to be released on big screens got postponed indefinitely and got finally released on OTT Platform. This movie is released on Amazon Prime on 2 nd of October in Telugu, Tamil and English versions. The film is dubbed in Malayalam with the same name while the Tamil and English version is named Silence.

Madhurkar, who got inspired by the movie Pushpaka Vimana wanted to make a similar dialogue less thriller. Later he gave the story to Kona Venkat who thought it had the potential of an “International project” and has added dialogues to it.

Anushka Shetty who is seen in many heroine-oriented films plays the deaf and mute character named Sakshi.  She has played her role well. Her facial expressions and sign language are so commendable. She has trained herself in sign language for more than two months. Her eyes and expressions speak thousand words. Madhavan fits into his character of a wealthy popular musician. Anjali, looked serious in her role as a cop. She looks fit and suitable for the role and carried herself well. Subbaraju, Shalini Pandey and Avasarala Srinivas did their characters very good. Shalini’s role of a over-protective friend is well portrayed.

The background score of the movie took the movie to an outstanding level as the music plays an important role in the thriller films. The  songs are very good. Ninne Ninne by Sid Sreeram was very good. Madhuramide was very melodious.

The story and the script were good. This movie is not like any other murder mysteries. This movie starts with horror element and slowly takes the story making it a crime thriller. Undoubtedly it keeps the audience glued to the screens with its twists. Perhaps, better direction would have given even better results as the film has got a talented star cast who had much to offer with their acting skills. Nevertheless, the film is still must watchable for its starcast and commendable acting of the lead actors.
