Using ChatGPT to write resumes and cover letters
Job hunting can feel like a job of its own, which is why some are using ChatGPT to write resumes and cover letters. Learn how AI can make the process of creating these documents easier as well as its limitations.
ChatGPT has become a popular choice for all kinds of content creation . Here’s what you need to know about using ChatGPT for your resume or cover letter.

Elevate your writing and collaborate with others - anywhere, anytime
Should I use AI in my job search?
The process of searching for a new job is rarely easy. Not only are you constantly checking job boards to find positions that both interest you and fit your skillset, but you’re also updating your resume and cover letter with every new application and editing these documents to suit each potential employer.
Using AI like ChatGPT for your job search can help you if you’re truly stumped for how to express your thoughts. Of course, it isn’t foolproof, either. Because this technology is so new, its output won’t be entirely accurate, and is no substitution for putting in the work yourself. The AI does the best it can with the information it’s given, which means it’s up to the job seeker to be both specific and accurate when inputting prompts, and to make any necessary adjustments to achieve a specific result.
If you plan to use ChatGPT for resume writing or crafting a cover letter, make sure you have a solid understanding of how to write both documents. After all, they’re a potential employer’s first impression of you; if you’re not well-represented because you relied on AI instead of your own skills, you’re not likely to get the job. ChatGPT can be useful for helping you come up with new ways to talk about your relevant skills and experience, but your personal touch is what will really make your resume and cover letter stand out.
Tips for writing a resume and cover letter
Whether you’re editing existing documents or starting from scratch, here are some tips to make sure that your resume and cover letter can help you make a good first impression.
- Use simple, professional formatting. Use a template to ensure that you’re delivering something that makes you look your best and is easy to read.
- Less is more. A busy resume can feel overwhelming for a recruiter. Show results where you can and leave off any unnecessary details.
- Proofread. Even if you’re using ChatGPT to help you with your job search, you’ll still need to look over the results to not only make sure that the content is accurate, but that it’s grammatically correct and sounds like you.
- Insert yourself. Make sure that your resume and cover letter are representative of you and not a chatbot. Your own personality should shine through, even if you’ve used AI to help you put things together.
At the end of the day, recruiters want to learn about you and whether you’re a good fit for a job. The best way for you share that information with them is with a well-written cover letter and a resume that’s easy to read .
What are the drawbacks of using ChatGPT to write a resume or cover letter?
Leveraging AI like ChatGPT to write your resume or cover letter does have a few pitfalls:
- This AI is very new technology and is certainly not foolproof. It’s constantly being tested and adjusted due to its newness.
- It may accidentally generate inaccurate statements due to its limited knowledge of the world after 2021.
- If you’re not proofreading carefully, you may gloss over some major errors. ChatGPT may generate content that is biased or harmful and it’s on you to catch those statements and not use them in your resume or cover letter. The AI may also repeat information between sections of a generated resume.
- The AI works with the information it’s given. The quality of the output depends entirely on the quality of the input.
- If you’re not specific enough when entering your prompts, you will get vague, generalized output. Similarly, if your prompt is poorly formatted, the AI may not understand what you’re asking for.
- ChatGPT may embellish some of your accomplishments. While it may be tempting to leave these in place, it’s never a good idea to lie about what you have and have not done.
This AI is not a replacement for doing the actual work yourself, but it can be a useful tool during the process of looking for a new job. Only you can truly know what you’ve achieved through your work and life experiences, and you’re the one who is best suited to crafting any type of resume or cover letter.
Entering resume and cover letter prompts into ChatGPT
The goal of using ChatGPT to write your resume or cover letter is to lessen the stress of creating these documents. But that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. You still must give the AI very clear instructions about what you want it to generate.
Prompts for using AI to write a resume
You can use AI to review an existing resume and provide feedback or tailor your resume to a specific posting. Make sure you ask very clear questions about what you’re looking for, as well as providing very clear guidance to the AI about what its role is. In both scenarios you’ll need to include your resume in its entirety, but if you’re looking for tailored edits, you should also include the job posting.
Prompts for these scenarios might look like:
- I am going to provide my resume and want you to act as a reviewer and provide feedback on it. How can I make it more readable? Are there any action verbs I should use? Am I using too many buzzwords?
- I will provide you with a job description for a position I am applying for. Understand the key points and requirements for this role and summarize them. Then review my resume and provide feedback on how to tailor it for this job.
These might seem overly specific but if you’re not specific enough, you won’t get the response you’re looking for.
Prompts for using AI to write a cover letter
When using ChatGPT to work on your cover letter for a specific job, you’ll need to provide:
- Your resume
- The job description of the role you’re interested in
- Information about what kind of tone you’d prefer
You can also ask the AI to review your cover letter for readability and help you get through a bout of writer’s block.
Prompts for these sorts of asks might look like:
- Write a cover letter for a [position] role at [Company] in a professional tone. Use my resume and the job description as a reference.
- I want you to review my cover letter for readability and relevance to a job post. I will share the job post as a reference. Tailor my cover letter for the job referenced in the post and adjust wording to make it more relevant.
These prompts may feel awkward to write, almost as though you’re explaining something to a small child. But the clearer and more specific you are, the more pleased you’re likely to be with the results.
While AI like ChatGPT is making some waves on the tech scene, it doesn’t totally replace human writing and editing skills, especially when it comes to resumes and cover letters. It certainly has value but comes with a few caveats. Use ChatGPT with caution, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for grammatical errors .

AI resume builder FAQs
What is an ai resume builder.
An AI resume builder is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to assist users in creating their resumes. These tools often have features like customized templates, content suggestions, optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), custom tailoring, feedback, and revision options.
What features does Enhancv’s AI resume builder offer?
Enhancv offers a range of AI features to help you create your resume with ease:
- Templates and customization: AI resume builders typically offer a variety of templates that users can choose from. These templates are designed to be both visually appealing and to meet the standards expected in different industries.
- ChatGPT-powered resume content writing and suggestions: Enhancv suggests content based on your input. For example, after entering your job history, you will receive suggestions for expanding upon your professional accomplishments or skills that align with your experience.
- Optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS): These systems are used by employers to screen resumes before they are seen by a human. Our builder suggests keywords and phrases that are likely to be favorable in these systems based on your job title.
- Feedback and revision suggestions: we’ve got a resume checker that provides feedback on the overall quality of the resume, including suggestions for improving layout, grammar, and wording.
How do I use ChatGPT on my resume?
You can use ChatGPT on your resume for a range of activities, related to resume building, including:
- Rewriting or writing from scratch difficult-to-write resume sections, such as your resume summary and job descriptions.
- Making your resume bullet points more action and performance-oriented.
- Suggesting skills and other keywords to include in your resume based on a job title.
- Suggesting extra sections that can help you stand out from the crowd.
- Using your resume as a starting point for an interview preparation mockup.
- Using your resume as a base for writing your cover letter.
Can recruiters tell if my resume was written by ChatGPT?
As long as your application is customized with your job history and accomplishments, it’s unlikely that recruiters can tell if you used ChatGPT. ChatGPT can only help improve your resume writing, but lying on a resume is unacceptable.
Are resumes scanned by AI?
Resumes in some companies are scanned by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) which may or may not have AI features. These systems parse resumes and match them with job descriptions. Enhancv’s resume templates are tested for ATS compatibility, though a 100% parsing rate is not guaranteed due to varying ATS models because the content of the resume is more important for ATS-friendliness than the template itself.
Enhancv Executive has changed my life: One week & four interviews later, I will be making 150% more doing the job I chose.

Create a Competitive Resume With ChatGPT in 6 Simple Steps
Writing or updating a resume with ChatGPT is simple, as long as you know what you're doing. Follow the steps below to create a resume, tailored to the job you're interested in.
- Gather your information
- Open ChatGPT and craft your first prompt
- Enter your personal experience
- Enter information about the job description
- Enter information about the hiring company
- Edit and refine your resume
1. Gather your information
Before you even open ChatGPT, we recommend having all of your important information at hand. This will prevent you from switching between tabs when crafting your prompt, and will also make it easier for you to refine your resume in later stages.
The type of information you prepare will depend on you and the position you are applying for. However, as a general rule of thumb, we recommend covering the following categories.
- Contact details – This will include your mobile number, professional email, and address if relevant
- Education – Write down your education history, including the names of the institutions you studied at, your majors or subjects, your grades, the dates of graduation, and any other relevant information.
- Work experience – If you have one, make sure you have a copy of your current resume to hand. If not, compile information from your previous jobs, including your responsibilities, and information about the companies.
- Certifications – If you have any certifications or qualifications that are relevant to your role, or make you seem like more of a credible candidate, gather this information and think about how these achievements can be leveraged to improve your hiring potential
- Skills – This is a good time to summarise your best hard and soft skills too. However, be as specific as possible and make sure you only write down skills that relate to your prospective role.
2. Open ChatGPT and craft your first prompt
Once all your information is at hand, open ChatGPT and create an account if you haven't already. Then, craft an introductory prompt requesting ChatGPT to build you a resume. We'd also recommend asking the chatbot to avoid using overused or cliche terms in your opening prompt to prevent your resume from looking like a carbon copy.
If you're stuck for inspiration, here's an example prompt:
I am writing a resume and I need your help. You are going to act as a professional resume writer, and are going to avoid using cliche terms. Do you understand?
After you've entered this prompt, ChatGPT will ask you for your following experience.
3. Enter your personal experience
Now it's time to make your resume personal. Use all the information you compiled in the first step, and feed it into your next prompts for ChatGPT. You have two options here. You can either paste your entire current resume into ChatGPT or highlight the most important bits in the prompt, to keep things succinct.
Here's an example of a prompt you could create below. We chose to break the prompt into different chunks but feel free to format the input how you like.
I am going to give you my personal information so you can make sure the resume reflects my personal experience and qualifications. I am a [Insert Current Job Title), with a degree in [Insert Course] from [Insert Name of Institition], which I graduated from in [Insert graduation date] with a [Insert Your Final Grade]. Since graduating, I've worked as a [Insert Previous Position] for [Insert Name of Previous Company] between [Insert Dates]. My main responsibilities at GoodContent included [Insert Main Responsibilities]. In my current role in [Insert Name of Current Company], I [Insert Current Responsibilities]. I have a number of hard and soft skills including [List Skills]. I also have a certification in [Insert Certifications]. Write my resume.
4. Enter information about the job description
Unless you're creating a multi-purpose resume that you're planning to tailor to specific job descriptions down the line, this is a good time to add more context about the job you're planning to apply for. You can do this by simply pasting the job description into the chatbot, as we did in the example prompt below.
I am applying for a job as a [Insert Job Title]. I am going to provide you with the job description I am going to apply for. Can you read this carefully? [Insert Full Job Description]
For best practice, we'd recommend including as much information in this step as possible. However, if some details in the job description don't apply to you as much as others, you can choose to leave these out.
5. Enter information about the hiring company
To make sure your resume is as targeted as possible, you should enter more information about the company itself next.
We'd start by telling ChatGPT exactly what you're going to do. Let it know you're going to be providing it with more information about the company that's hiring, and then enter basic information about the company, including its name and core function. You can also paste information from the ‘About Us' page on the company's website, to make your prompt as rich as possible. Use the example prompt below for inspiration.
Now I'm going to provide you with more information on the company that's hiring, so you can make sure my resume is tailored to their pain points and hiring needs. The company name is [Insert Name of Company] and their central mission is as follows: [Insert More Informatio About the Company]. The website's about you page is as follows: [Insert Company's ‘About Us' Page]
6. Edit and refine your resume
After completing these steps, ChatGPT will have created a rough resume for you. While it may look decent, now is a good time to give it a read over, and identify areas that could be improved upon.
- Edit the format – ChatGPT can only generate text outputs, so you'll have to format the resume yourself. The way you format the document is up to you, but for scannability purposes, make sure all the key information is bullet-pointed.
- Use active tense – Ensure your resume uses the active tense as much as possible, especially when speaking about your current work experience. This will make you appear more confident, and will grab the attention of the reader.
- Check the content – ChatGPT does a good job of building a resume based on the content you provide. However, if you think the resume should place more emphasis on certain experiences or skills, don't be afraid to craft new prompts to achieve this.
- Watch out for generic language – ChatGPT has a habit of creating generic-sounding responses. To make sure your resume has a human touch, comb through the copy and substitute cliche, or frilly terms with something less formulaic.
- Add contact details – Once you're happy with the result, add the personal contact details you prepared in the first step.
- Choose a template – Paste the ChatGPT-created resume into a template of your choice. Make sure that this template is appropriate for the industry that you are applying within, and avoid models that are too stylized and complicated. If you don't want to pay for a template, you can choose a free one with platforms like Canva and Indeed.
Consider Using a Dedicated AI Resume Builder
ChatGPT does an excellent job at creating resumes, especially if you're armed with useful tips and tried-and-tested prompts. Also, a massive perk of the platform is that it's completely free to use too, which is a huge boon if you're looking to save money during the job search.
However, if you're willing to invest in your professional future, AI-enabled resume builders let you create and edit resumes in even fewer steps, and offer far more useful features than ChatGPT. Most AI resume builders will ask you to input your qualifications and experience, and then take care of everything else, saving the hassle of entering different prompts.
Aside from generating and refining text, lots of AI resume builders format and design your document too, eliminating the need to switch between platforms. After researching the best options on the market, we decided that Zety Resume Builder is the best due to its impressive range of templates and intuitive “final summary” feature.
There are loads of great pieces of software to choose from, though. Compare the best platforms in our guide to the best free and paid resume builders .

AI Resume Writer Frequently Asked Questions
How does an ai resume writer work.
An AI resume writer analyzes thousands of existing resumes across industries and job titles to learn how to write the perfect resume for any application. Simply input basic information such as your current job title and skills, and let our AI resume writer generate text for your resume’s summary and work experience sections.
Can my AI resume be personalized to each job I apply to?
AI resumes are the perfect option when you’re applying for many positions, because they allow you to personalize each resume quickly and efficiently. Whether you choose to personalize the content manually, or request changes from the AI itself, our AI resume builder can generate unlimited personalized resumes.
How effective are resumes generated by an AI resume writer?
Resumes generated by an AI resume writer are just as effective, if not more effective, than traditional, manually written resumes. Because our AI resume writer has analyzed so many effective resumes, it understands exactly what to say to help you stand apart from the crowd and catch a hiring manager’s attention, fast.
How long does it take to build a resume using AI?
An AI resume can take just minutes to build. Once you’ve input your information, VisualCV’s AI resume writer will generate your content in a matter of seconds. After that, it’s up to you how much or how little you’d like to change the content or add any extra sections, such as skills, to your resume.
What information should I provide an AI resume writer?
The more information you provide an AI resume writer, the better. However, VisualCV’s AI resume writer can create resume summaries and resume work experience entries using minimal information, such as your industry and level of experience. For example, telling the AI resume writer that you work in finance and your current job title is portfolio manager will lead the AI writer to create content based on previously analyzed portfolio manager resumes. This approach may require more editing on your end, but can be a great jumping off point when you’re feeling stuck. On the other hand, if you include more information about your accomplishments at your current position, the AI resume builder can give your work experience or summary sections that extra bit of polish you’re looking for.
Will my resume pass Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software?
All of VisualCV’s professionally designed resume templates have been formulated specifically to pass ATS software. Using our AI resume builder will not impact your resume’s ability to be seen by a real person in any way!
Should I use an AI resume writer, or a professional resume writer?
Whether to use AI or a professional resume writer can be a tricky decision, but, in general, our AI resume builder is a perfect jumping off point when you’re not sure how to begin writing. If your career has been especially long, you have many jobs to speak about, or your journey can be difficult or complicated to explain in a resume, you might find it easier to work with a (human) professional resume writer. However, the majority of resumes are straightforward and perfect candidates for our AI resume writer.
Can I make edits to my resume after the AI resume writer creates it?
You can always edit your resume in VisualCV’s resume builder after our AI resume writer has created it. If you aren’t happy with the content the AI resume builder provides, you can either edit the existing content or regenerate the provided content for a new suggestion.

Whether you want it to generate your professional summary or an individual bullet, ask it directly. For example, I asked ChatGPT, "Can you write a short, professional resume summary about my role as a tech reporter?" Within seconds it created the results, as seen by the photo above.
Also: ChatGPT is the most sought out tech skill in the workforce, says learning platform
Although ChatGPT is more than capable of coming up with content that is ready to be copied and pasted into a resume, you should tweak the text so that it is personalized to your actual experiences and to make sure it doesn't look like it was written by a robot.
At the end of the day, employers want to learn about what makes you unique. Without your assistance, the chatbot will only have access to generic prompts about your role.
4. Use ChatGPT to revamp your own text
Whether you decided to take a stab at filling out the template yourself before using ChatGPT's assistance or have an existing resume you want to enhance, ChatGPT is a great resource for polishing up text.
All you have to do is copy and paste your own text and ask ChatGPT to make it better.
Also: The best AI chatbots: ChatGPT and other interesting alternatives to try
For example, I asked ChatGPT, "Can you make this resume bullet sound better: I write stories about technology". Within seconds, it pushed out an elaborate bullet point that incorporated a professional tone and made that simple sentence more complex, as seen by the photo above.
Once you get your result, you can always tell ChatGPT to tweak it further with prompts like, "Make it shorter" or "Can you include [additional details]?".
How much does it cost for ChatGPT to write my resume?
ChatGPT is currently free to use regardless of what you use it for, which includes resume-building assistance.
How can ChatGPT help me with my resume?
ChatGPT can generate text for different parts of your resume, including your professional summary and individual bullet points for each experience.
Also: How to nail the 'Do you have any questions for me?' part of the interview
The chatbot can also help enhance your current resume by optimizing your text. If you have any questions about how to format your resume and what to include, ChatGPT is able to give you some answers.
What should I put in my resume?
Ideally, you want a resume to highlight all of the accomplishments of your career. This can include any educational, professional, and leadership experiences that are meaningful to you.

You should also include as much detail about your unique experiences to make you stand out from other applicants.

What’s ChatGPT?
How to write a resume using chatgpt, chatgpt prompt example, tips for using chatgpt, land your next job with ai.
Even strong writers struggle to find the right words to fill a blank page. But when that blank page is a draft of your resume, you need to find a way to jumpstart the writing process — especially if your job search has a ticking clock.
When drafting your resume, it’s paramount to choose each word carefully. After all, it’s likely the first touchpoint between you and hiring managers. A well-written resume sets a strong foundation for your candidacy and might just be what persuades a company to invite you for an interview.
Not everyone is a natural wordsmith. That’s okay. Instead of staring down the blinking text cursor pondering action verbs and compelling skills , try delegating some work to artificial intelligence (AI). That’s right: you can ask a robot to help you write your resume.
AI tools can analyze a job posting, brainstorm ways to tailor your experience to the role at hand, and keep language professional and efficient. But AI chatbots like ChatGPT are far from perfect, so copy-pasting an AI-generated resume word-for-word isn’t the best use of this tool. To create an effective ChatGPT resume, you must learn to leverage AI for its efficiency while maintaining your unique voice.
ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool developed by OpenAI . The AI language model can understand and generate human-like conversations because it draws from a data set developed by human AI trainers and approved online content.
ChatGPT has various professional abilities, including summarizing reports, drafting emails, and breaking projects into to-do lists. Likewise, it can work as a cover letter generator, help you prepare for interview questions , and brainstorm how to represent your personal branding.
When it comes to crafting the perfect resume to land your dream job, ChatGPT is capable of assisting with:
Choosing a resume template and guiding the overall structure
Providing industry-appropriate suggestions based on your relevant skills, work experience, and know-how
Drafting an objective or summary statement that highlights your best qualifications
Analyzing the position’s requirements and identifying your key competencies
Suggesting ways to include education , certifications, and extracurricular activities to show off your soft skills
Inserting industry-specific keywords and terminology to optimize your resume for applicant tracking systems
Writing concise and engaging descriptions about your previous roles to showcase accomplishments and professional growth
To write a resume using ChatGPT, you must provide the chatbot with a prompt (the instructions you tell the AI to elicit your desired response). But crafting the perfect prompt takes careful thought and consideration — it’s not as simple as asking the program to spit out a resume.
Here’s how to create a resume prompt for ChatGPT:
1. Prepare your information
Start by compiling all of your professional information. Jot down the following details about you:
- Full contact details, including a professional email address and phone number
- Work experience, relevant skills, and a brief description of your roles and responsibilities and the key achievements in each role. Provide metrics for work achievements, if possible.
- Education information, including years of study, degree(s), certifications, and any honors or awards
- Skills relevant to the job postings’ requisites and responsibilities
- A copy or key highlights of the job posting, including the description of the role, ideal candidate, and company culture
2. Begin the prompt
With your information handy, build out the prompt. Start by providing the chatbot with the information shared in the post for the open position.
I need help drafting my resume. Please emphasize my most relevant education, experiences, and skills to align with the job requirements and responsibilities in the job description. Here’s a copy/summary of the posting: [Insert job posting] .
3. Insert your personal details
Next, include the personal and professional information you assembled in step one. It’s key to organize these details in a way that’s easy for the chatbot to read and understand. To avoid errors, separate your contact details, skills, education, experience, and extracurriculars into different sections. Use concise paragraphs and bulleted lists to explore each section in greater depth.
This is the personal information I’d like to include in my resume:
Contact information: Include your name, phone number, email address, and any other relevant professional platforms (such as a LinkedIn profile or portfolio website).
Work experience: Summarize your relevant professional experience while keeping things concise. When deciding how far back to go , we suggest leaving out jobs from more than 15 years ago and roles irrelevant to the open position.
Education: State the year you graduated, your degree(s), the institution(s) you studied at, and any academic accomplishments. These include an impressive GPA, scholarships, and relevant certificates.
Extracurriculars and achievements: Share any work or experiences relevant to the position in and out of the professional world. Volunteering, industry awards, and special projects all qualify.
4. Provide pointers
Finally, establish additional guidelines to help you meet the hiring company’s expectations. This is also a great opportunity to ask the chatbot for additional assistance in areas of writing you struggle with. For example:
Tell me: How should I organize this resume?
Suggest 15 action verbs with use case examples to describe my accomplishments and work experiences
Provide me with a list of 10 other valuable soft skills for this role
Rewrite this section using professional language
Provide me with two options: a functional resume and a chronological resume
Create three options for a possible personal brand statement or resume summary that leverages my best skills against the job’s top requisites
Based on my resume, what are 10 transferable skills I possess that would benefit me in this position?
To help you visualize an effective prompt, here’s a sample. You may choose to edit it based on your specific job search.
I need help drafting my resume. Here’s the job description: “Junior Public Policy Analyst at Center for Public Policy. Seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious Junior Public Policy Analyst to join a dynamic team. You’ll be working with senior analysts, researchers, and policymakers.
Responsibilities:
Collect and analyze data, review literature, and stay up-to-date on relevant policy developments
Develop research reports, policy briefs, and recommendations
Support senior analysts in providing workshops, consultations, and open forums
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s in political science, economics, or a related field
Proven research and analytical skills
Ability to synthesize complex information
Strong time management, organization, and attention to detail
Can work independently and collaboratively
We are a think tank committed to conducting and shaping public policy with a high impact on national policymaking. Our team is dedicated to evidence-based analysis, ethics, and transparency.”
These are the personal details I’d like to include:
Contact information: Jane Smith, (XXX) XXX-XXXX, [email protected].
Work experience: I was an assistant consultant for Policy Innovation Lab from 2019 to 2022. I was promoted to Junior Consultant in 2021. I assisted in researching and drafting policy recommendations for funding non-profit organizations focused on sustainable community economic growth. I also became proficient in both qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods.
Education: I earned a BA in Economics from the University of Washington, where I studied from 2015 to 2019. I graduated summa cum laude. I also have a minor in Spanish.
Skills: I have excellent time management skills , am highly organized, and possess strong attention to detail . I enjoy working alone and contributing in a team environment. I’ve developed my active listening skills , am a strong writer, and feel passionate about research.
Certifications and training: I received a Certificate in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School in 2020.
Achievements: I consulted on two policy briefs for an acting senator, both of which were successfully drafted into law.
Please provide me with engaging action verbs to describe my accomplishments. Help me brainstorm the best soft skills for a junior public policy analyst and leverage my skills and experience to fit the requirements in the job description.
Here’s an example of ChatGPT’s response to this prompt:
While ChatGPT can help you write or improve your existing resume, the technology is best used as a tool to complement your work. It’s not a replacement for a career coach , resume builder , or professional resume writer. That said, if you use it correctly, the chatbot can get you close to a final product.
Once you finish writing out the prompt, follow these six tips to optimize ChatGPT’s response:
Provide all relevant information: You can think of ChatGPT as an assistant who needs to be onboarded. The more information you provide, the more likely it is to build a resume that’s accurate and truthful about your potential. Take stock of your most valuable work experiences, skills, education, and certifications, and lay them out clearly in your prompt.
Have a conversation: AI chatbots like ChatGPT were developed to have back-and-forth conversations in plain language. To get the best results, collaborate with the chatbot and request multiple interactions of its answers when necessary. Ask for clarification, provide feedback, and play around with the requisites you provided to refine and improve the resume in real time. Note that, at the time of writing, ChatGPT has a limit of 50 questions within a 4-hour time frame.
Use AI as a starting point: ChatGPT’s suggestions are just that: suggestions. The results can’t replace your knowledge about your experience and capabilities — you're the expert on what you have to offer. Use its answers as inspiration and modify them to reflect your unique worth. To add another layer of humanness to your AI-generated resume, consider working with a career coach to identify the unique strengths and experience you would bring to the role. Together, you and your coach can refine the draft into the best possible version of your resume.
Double-check everything: ChatGPT wasn’t designed as a resume builder. It pulls from the information you provide and the content it’s trained on, which means it isn’t all-knowing. Ensure all industry-relevant skills, experiences, and know-how are represented accurately so no incorrect claims slip through the cracks.
Proofread the writing: ChatGPT can make grammar errors, produce awkward phrasing, or miss critical stylistic details for different types of resumes . These simple errors can cost you a job interview . They show a lack of professionalism and attention to detail, which potential employers may associate with your performance. Always proofread for mistakes and adapt the language to sound natural.
Ask ChatGPT what it needs: If a prompt isn’t working as you’d hoped and you’re not sure why, you can always ask. Inquiring, “What additional information does ChatGPT need to help me build my resume?” allows the chatbot to highlight the essential resume elements you might be missing.
Artificial intelligence is a new and exciting advancement. Now that chatbots are widely available for anyone to use, you can leverage this technology to speed up the job application process and stand out to recruiters.
Remember that you likely won’t get a perfect ChatGPT resume on your first try, but don’t give up. Gathering the most accurate information, writing a prompt that’s clear and specific, and refining the results to your needs will put you one step closer to a winning application.

I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened
Here’s how to apply for a job using AI
I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.
Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.
For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy.
The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.
I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.
A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.
The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.
Sign up to get the BEST of Tom’s Guide direct to your inbox.
Upgrade your life with a daily dose of the biggest tech news, lifestyle hacks and our curated analysis. Be the first to know about cutting-edge gadgets and the hottest deals.
I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019.
If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.
With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.
My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!
Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.
I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?
I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role.
Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.
The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)
Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.
If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.
My score: 3/5
Resumaker.ai
“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?
By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.
The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.
However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards.
Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.
The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is?
Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.
It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.
Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill.
It scored its own resume at 79%.
As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.
My score: 2/5
Kickresume.com
The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version.
Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.
Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.
Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.
If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.
I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed.
While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.
My score: 4/5
No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.
I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.
Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.
I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.
I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.
Honorary score: 4/5
The verdict
There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect.
Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

How does the AI Resume rewriter work?
The AI Resume rewriter uses advanced natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to analyze the content of your existing resume, as well as job postings for your desired job or industry.

At the beginning of every billing period, credits are added to your account (whether it’s a month, three months, or a year).
GPT-4 is a paid tool, and we have to pay Open-AI for every API request. We’re “buying” the use of their AI technology. Because of that, we had to put a limit on how many times you can use the AI Writer per month.

A resume builder should not be used as a magic wand, but it can certainly reduce anxiety in the job ... [+] search process and help you process your thoughts, skills and experiences in a way that will resonate with the recruiting team
In your quest to create the perfect resume, no doubt you've encountered several AI (artificial intelligence) applications all supposedly guaranteeing the same promise: to be able to save you time, worry, and stress, and generate a shiny new document that will get you past the gatekeepers and secure an initial interview.
If you've never used a generative AI tool before, you might be concerned and initially apprehensive.
And you should be.
After all, you don't want to take any chances and wreck an entire application that has already taken considerable painstaking effort.
With the plethora of options you have to choose from, it might be overwhelming to know which resume builders are worth your money (if you do need to pay anything at all) and which ones have the highest chances of success.
But as long as you follow these guidelines to make your resume with AI, you'll be on the right track:
How To Find A Good Resume Builder
When looking for a resume builder, you will need to carefully weigh up several factors including:
- Ease of navigation and user experience
- Your budget and pricing options available—including any free trials or free plans you might be able to take advantage of
- Trustpilot and Product Hunt reviews, Reddit discussions and reviews, and even asking your professional connections on LinkedIn
- Value for the price
- Comparison of features and customization options—customization is extremely important for your resume to be effective
- ATS compatibility
Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024
Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.
A note on ATS compatibility: Applicant tracking systems are becoming more modernized, and as such, some features that would have been rendered unreadable and disqualify you from a position (such as double columns) are now accessible thanks to updated parsing technology, according to an Enhancv study .
However, it's worth bearing in mind that according to the study, a resume built with Canva or Microsoft Word tends to fare better overall without double columns—a 93% success rate compared to an 86% success rate for double columns.
At the same time, using a different software such as Google Docs yields an impressive 99% success rate, regardless of whether the resume was created with a single or double column.
5 AI-Powered Resume Builders
Below are five positively-reviewed AI-powered resume builder tools you can use to make your application truly stand out to hiring managers. Some, such as Enhancv, are tested against ATS software (applicant tracking systems that recruiters use to help screen candidate resumes) to ensure full compatibility:

How To Use A Resume Builder
Whichever resume builder you decide to use from the list above, it's essential to understand that AI is not a quick fix. While it certainly provides much needed assistance as you figure out how to make a resume that truly stands out to employers, you will need to ensure that you double check the final output for grammatical issues, spelling mistakes, inconsistencies, needless repetitions, and a lack of human flow in the writing style—all of which can be obvious tell-tale signs that your resume was written by AI.
Additionally, while AI can help with formatting and readability, you need to ensure that the final document reflects who you really are and is one that you are personally happy and comfortable with.
Using a resume builder doesn't take away from the fact that you need to sell yourself effectively. AI will only provide impetus to what you already have. An AI-powered resume builder won't do the selling for you. This means quantifying your achievements where possible and using this data to feed the resume builder.
Resume builders will also help you identify keywords to help you beat ATS—but you'll need to check over these to ensure they apply to you, and look out for any other resume keywords which are familiar terms in your industry so you can highlight the right keywords to catch the attention of recruiters.
Finally, it's essential to note that resume builders will not take away the necessity for mental effort. You still need to closely study job descriptions and highlight relevant experience, education, skills (including soft skills) and certificates that you possess, so that you can input these into the tool.
This is because resume builders may sometimes include skills that are not relevant to you, in an effort to match with the job description for the role you wish to apply for, so you'll need to ensure that you review these for accuracy. Also, some may only focus on your last role, so you'll need to add extra experiences to bulk up your resume and provide deeper context into your skills and experience.
Resume builders offer incredible features such as customization options, free trials, and assistance ... [+] with keywords.
Overall, crafting the perfect resume that actually gets you hired comes down to a combination of your personal input and self-belief in your abilities, and the complementary augmentation of artificial intelligence tools. Job searching can be an exhausting process, so utilize these resume builders to make your efforts easier and give you greater piece of mind—edging you closer to your dream job.

ChatGPT Resume Prompts & Tips from Career Experts

What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an advanced AI-powered chatbot developed by the artificial intelligence research and development company, OpenAI.
ChatGPT uses generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs) to produce human-like text responses based on user input.
It is trained on vast amounts of data from the internet, allowing it to understand and generate coherent and contextually relevant responses.
ChatGPT has gained popularity for its ability to engage in conversational interactions, making it a valuable tool for various applications, including resume writing.
Can ChatGPT write a resume?
With the right prompts, ChatGPT can help you write a resume from scratch or improve an existing resume.
That being said, relying solely on ChatGPT for creating a resume is not recommended, as it does not have personal knowledge of your specific experiences, skills and achievements.
Your resume is a crucial document for showcasing your career journey, and it requires a personalized and professional touch that AI-generated content lacks.
Here are a few considerations when it comes to using ChatGPT to assist with writing your resume:
- Does not have formatted resume templates , it will only generate text for your resume.
- Often misunderstands prompts, resulting in inaccurate or irrelevant content output.
- Does not know your work history, professional skills and notable accomplishments.
- Often uses generic language that might not be impressive to hiring managers.

Best ChatGPT resume prompts
When selecting a ChatGPT resume prompt, the first step is to decide which format best reflects your skills and qualifications (chronological, combination or functional).
Explore our guide on resume formats to determine which one is right for you, then see the best prompts for each one below to get started.
Chronological resume prompt
“Please create a chronological resume for me that lists my work experience in reverse-chronological order, starting with my most recent position. Use a clear and easy-to-read format and highlight my relevant skills and achievements.
Include a professional summary that highlights my expertise as a [ your professional title ] with [ your years of experience ] [ three to five key tasks and skills you want to highlight ].
Include the following information in my work history section: [ your past roles, dates of employment, company names and a brief summary of your job duties and accomplishments for each position ].
Create separate sections for my skills ([ skill #1, skill #2, skill #3, etc ]), education ([ your education credentials ]), professional certifications ([ your professional certifications ]) and my volunteer and extracurricular activities ([ your volunteer experience and extracurricular activities ]).”
Combination resume prompt
“I would like a combination resume that showcases my work experience, skills and achievements. Include a professional summary that highlights my expertise as a [ your professional title ] with [ your years of experience ] [ three to five key tasks and skills you want to highlight ].
Include a summary of qualifications with the following information: [ key qualification #1, key qualification #2, key qualification #3 ].
Organize my work experience in reverse-chronological order and list the following information: [ your past roles, dates of employment, company names and a brief summary of your job duties and accomplishments for each position ].
Create separate sections for my skills ([ skill #1, skill #2, skill #3, etc ]), education ([ your education credentials ]), professional certifications ([ your professional certifications ]), and my volunteer and extracurricular activities ([ your volunteer experience and extracurricular activities ]).”
Functional resume prompt
“Can you create a functional resume for me that highlights my skills and achievements? Include a professional summary that highlights my expertise as a [ your professional title ] with [ your years of experience ] [ three to five key tasks and skills you want to highlight ].
Organize the following accomplishments under three skill categories ([ skill category #1, skill category #2, skill category #3 ]): [ your key tasks and accomplishments from past roles ].
Include a brief summary of my work experience: [ your past roles, dates of employment, company names and a brief summary of your job duties and accomplishments for each position ].
Create separate sections for my education ([ your education credentials ]), professional certifications ([ your professional certifications ]), and my volunteer and extracurricular activities ([ your volunteer experience and extracurricular activities ]).”
ChatGPT does not know your professional history, meaning any prompt you use must include your skills, work history and qualifications.
To ensure your professional information is properly dispersed throughout your resume, we recommend using separate prompts for each section.
We’ll detail how to use ChatGPT for each section of your resume below. Always remember to review AI-generated content for inaccuracies or generic language.

It is always advisable to seek guidance from professional resume writers, career coaches or mentors who can provide personalized feedback and suggestions for creating an effective resume.
Mistakes to avoid when using ChatGPT for resume writing
- Over-relying on ChatGPT: While ChatGPT can provide valuable suggestions, it’s important to remember that it’s an AI language model and cannot replace your own expertise and understanding of your skills and experiences. Use ChatGPT as a tool to supplement your own inputs and ideas.
- Not providing enough information: ChatGPT needs specific information about your work experience, skills and accomplishments to generate effective resume content. Make sure to provide as much detail as possible in your prompts to get the best results.
- Not considering design and formatting: While ChatGPT can provide content, it may not always consider design and formatting. Make sure to choose an appropriate font, layout, and color scheme that is professional and visually appealing.
- Not seeking feedback from professionals: While ChatGPT can provide valuable suggestions, it’s always a good idea to seek feedback from professionals or trusted individuals in your field to further refine and improve your resume.
How to use ChatGPT to improve your resume
In addition to using ChatGPT to write a resume from scratch, you can also use it to improve an existing resume. Below are a few tips on how to use ChatGPT to update your resume.
Tailoring for specific job applications
If you have a specific job in mind, provide ChatGPT with the job description or requirements. ChatGPT can assist you in customizing your existing resume to highlight the skills and measurable achievements that align with the job you’re applying for.
Reordering sections
If you want to reorganize the sections of your resume, such as moving your skills section higher or highlighting your education, you can discuss these changes with ChatGPT and get suggestions on how to best structure your resume.
Adding keywords
Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to scan resumes for specific keywords. ChatGPT can help you identify relevant keywords for your industry or job role, ensuring that your resume has a higher chance of passing through the ATS and reaching human eyes.
Editing and proofreading
ChatGPT can assist you in proofreading your resume for spelling, grammar and formatting errors. It can also provide suggestions for improving sentence structure and clarity, helping you create a polished and error-free resume.
Ask for formatting and design advice
In addition to content, you can also ask ChatGPT for formatting and design advice. Seek suggestions on how to structure your resume, choose appropriate fonts and colors and create a professional and visually appealing layout. See our guide on what your resume should look like for expert tips.
ChatGPT resume writing tips
- Provide clear and specific prompts: The more details you provide, the better ChatGPT can generate relevant and tailored suggestions.
- Iterate and refine: Review the suggestions, make necessary edits and ask ChatGPT to iterate on specific sections until you are satisfied with the result.
- Customize for each job application: Provide the specific requirements and keywords from the job posting to make your resume more targeted and aligned with the position you’re applying for.
- Proofread and edit: Check for any grammar or spelling errors, and ensure that the information provided accurately represents your skills and experiences.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT can be a useful tool for generating a first draft of your resume or updating an existing resume.
- You’ll need to provide ChatGPT with your work history, professional skills and relevant qualifications to generate accurate and detailed content for your resume.
- Resume builders are more effective than ChatGPT since they include professional templates, expert insights and professionally written content suggestions.
How do I ask ChatGPT to improve my resume?
To ask ChatGPT to help improve your resume, you can provide it with your existing resume and ask for suggestions and guidance. We also recommend checking out our guide on updating your resume for additional tips.
Here’s an example of how you can prompt ChatGPT:
- Input your prompt: Hi, I have a resume that I would like to improve. Can you provide me with suggestions to enhance my resume?
- Add your resume: Copy and paste your existing resume here or provide a summary of its content.
- Ask questions: How can I make my resume more impactful? What sections should I focus on? Can you incorporate action verbs into my bullet points? Are there any keywords I should include?
Remember to review and validate the suggestions provided by ChatGPT and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that your resume accurately reflects your skills and experiences.
Can employers tell if you use ChatGPT?
Employers may be able to recognize if a resume or cover letter has been generated by an AI language model if the writing is overly generic or lacks a personal touch.
This can raise concerns about the authenticity and suitability of the candidate and hinder their chances of landing an interview.
It’s always recommended to use ChatGPT as a tool for inspiration and guidance rather than relying solely on it to write your resume.
We recommend using a resume builder instead, which features expertly crafted templates and professional content written by real experts.
How do I prompt ChatGPT to tailor my resume to a job description?
You can prompt ChatGPT to tailor your resume to a specific job description by providing it with the job description and your existing resume. Here are the steps you can follow:
- Copy the job description of the position you are applying for and paste it into the ChatGPT prompt box.
- Provide some context to ChatGPT about your current resume. For example, you could say, “I have a resume that I would like to tailor to this job description.”
- Provide ChatGPT with your current resume by copying and pasting the text into the prompt box.
- In the prompt box, enter “Can you provide me with suggestions for how I can tailor my resume to this job description?”
- Review the suggestions provided by ChatGPT and make any necessary changes to your resume.
See our guide on what to put on a resume for additional tips and examples.
Is there a ChatGPT resume builder?
ChatGPT does not have a specific resume builder feature. There are many other online resume builders that can help you create a professional-looking resume quickly and easily.
These resume builders come with pre-designed templates, industry-specific language and customization options to help you highlight your skills and experiences.
We also recommend using an AI cover letter generator to create a cover letter that expands upon the information from your resume.

How to Use ChatGPT to Write Your Resume
Struggling to create a perfect resume? Find out how ChatGPT can help you write it and land your dream job.
Key Takeaways
- ChatGPT helps you cut out manual work and summarize your resume.
- Use ChatGPT to generate outlines and flesh out important sections that will impress potential employers.
- ChatGPT Premium subscribers can use custom GPTs to analyze existing information and get more refined answers.
Standing out with your resume can be a huge challenge, but ChatGPT is a great tool to generate ideas and automate some of your editing. Learn how to write a high-quality resume with ChatGPT and how to fix common errors.
How to Write Your Resume With ChatGPT From Scratch
When writing your resume with ChatGPT, you can choose to either write everything from scratch or use a plugin. If you don't have a premium subscription, you're limited to using ChatGPT without custom GPTs. Let's start by looking at how to use the free version.
How to Draft a Resume Outline With ChatGPT
Contrary to popular belief, writing a resume in ChatGPT isn't as simple as a one-and-done prompt. You need to build on the information you add over time. Before adding customized information, it's worth asking the AI tool for a simple outline. To do this, I asked ChatGPT:
"Can you please help me write a resume? I want to land a job as a photographer at an agency."
It's also worth asking ChatGPT to keep everything to one page if that's your preference. ChatGPT provides a simple outline, including suggestions to add contact information, related skills, and a statement or summary.
ChatGPT also suggested that we add references, related educational and professional history, and links to our portfolio.
With these basics, you can spend some time thinking about how you want to customize your resume. Before you move on to the next section, consider learning about the most common ChatGPT prompting mistakes to avoid .
How to Write Your Professional Experience and Resume Summary With ChatGPT
With an overall outline of your resume, you can start filling it out step-by-step. Based on our testing, it’s best to start with your professional experience. This will make it much easier for ChatGPT to generate the rest of your resume appropriately. I gave ChatGPT this prompt:
"For Professional Experience: I have run my own Instagram page for six years about landscape photography. I have grown it to 25,000 followers and achieved 300% year-on-year growth this year. I also have my own blog which has 100,000 monthly readers about travel in the US, for which I have taken all of the pictures. As a freelancer, I have a retainer with my local newspaper and have also worked with agencies. For one agency project, my images helped contribute to a campaign generating $10 million in revenue. Can you please add this to the Professional Experience section and re-generate the draft?"
ChatGPT then fleshed out my Professional Experience section based on this information. You can ask to have your start and (if applicable) end dates added, but you can also add these manually if you'd prefer. Here's what ChatGPT gave me:
Rather helpfully, ChatGPT also adjusted my Objective Statement with the information provided:
The initial summary was quite long, so I asked ChatGPT to shorten it to 150 characters. But since that wasn't very informative, I upped the parameters to three sentences and 280 characters. The result was much better:
Besides avoiding common errors within ChatGPT, you should avoid easy-to-overlook resume mistakes when looking for a new job. Examples include putting education above experience and not customizing your resume for each application. You may also want to learn how to create a resume in Canva if you're interested in eye-catching designs.
How to Use ChatGPT to Outline Skills in Your Resume
Ultimately, your employer will want your skills to match their job opening. Make sure you showcase them in the best way possible when writing your resume with ChatGPT. I gave quite a detailed prompt here:
"Perfect. Now, let's outline my skills. I'm advanced in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, with knowledge of color grading, editing exposure, and using histograms and layers. I also have an Adobe CC All Apps subscription. Furthermore, I've taken over 200,000 photos in various conditions, including golden hour and at night—along with during the winter and summer. Soft skills include time management (I use Google Calendar to block out my entire day) and being excellent at communicating with other people. My visual storytelling skills are evident in my 1,000+ blog posts that clearly highlight the full story of each journey I take. I also know how to use Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony, and Canon mirrorless cameras."
ChatGPT then gave me a relatively detailed summary of the skills I asked it to showcase:
I felt like these needed some more information, so I then asked ChatGPT:
"I think we need to add a bit more. Let's also talk about my creative skills, and move Visual Storytelling into that section. I know all about the exposure triangle and experimenting with different forms of lighting, along with using aperture priority, manual, and shutter priority modes."
The edited section was much better and outlined the creative skills I wanted to showcase in further detail (along with putting these in a separate area).
ChatGPT also included the soft skills section that was in the first draft:
Once you've got the information you need, you can add these to your resume and tweak them further if you feel like doing so is necessary. Either way, it's important to proofread everything and make sure your resume is accurate before you send it to potential employers.
How to Add Your Educational History to Your Resume With ChatGPT
While employers care more about your work and project experience than your education, the skills you pick up while studying are still worth adding. To start, I gave ChatGPT this prompt:
"Great, let's now move on to educational experience. I studied journalism at university, during which I did several multimedia programs and an optional photojournalism module. I learned how to tell stories through pictures and what captivates audiences, along with the best photographic practices and how to maintain integrity. At university, I also freelanced for companies in the local area and founded my own media team for the university's basketball team."
ChatGPT gave me the following after I asked it to also include course dates and locations, which was pretty good:

How to Write a Resume With ChatGPT Using a Custom GPT
If you use ChatGPT premium, you can create a resume using a custom GPT. The prompts from the previous sections should also work when using a custom GPT. However, if you already have a resume, you can upload it to get feedback and improve from there. Here's how to do so:
- Upload a PDF version of your resume.
ChatGPT can help you customize your resume and save hours of time that you'd otherwise spend thinking about what to add. Use the tool to make your writing more concise and summarize the most important parts of your work-related experience. You can also analyze existing resumes if you already have an existing framework. Make sure that you proofread and customize everything to your own needs before you start applying for jobs.

Automating Resume Screening with Power Automate and ChatGPT

In this article, we will discover how businesses can revolutionize their hiring process through the automation of resume screening using Power Automate and ChatGPT.
Introduction
In today’s competitive job market, organizations receive numerous resumes daily. Manually reviewing each one can be time-consuming and prone to errors. In this blog, we’ll explore how to automate the resume screening process using Microsoft Power Automate. By leveraging its advanced capabilities, we can streamline the hiring process and identify the most promising candidates efficiently.
Step 1. Trigger the Flow
In this article, I used a manual trigger to run this flow. These are cases in business to apply for a job.
- Email Arrival: If the business requirement is to automate the process when an email with a resume attachment arrives, you can set up an email inbox (e.g., [email protected] ) to receive candidate resumes. The flow can then be triggered automatically when a new email arrives in this inbox.
- Form Submission: Alternatively, if candidates submit their resumes through a web form (e.g., on the company’s careers page), you can configure the flow to trigger when a form submission occurs. The flow can extract the resume data from the form and initiate further actions.
In the current setup, the flow is manually triggered. For test purposes, I used a manual trigger and a file upload as input to upload the resume.
This trigger we will change based on business requirements.
Step 2. Extract Resume Data
Here we will take the AI builder model “Extract information from documents”, mostly it is trained to take information from documents but if you think this model is not providing the information you want you can customize this model and train a model for your purposes as I did in this demo.
I've created an AI model named the "Resume Processing Model" specifically designed to extract crucial information from resumes, including names, skills, and experience. This model is aimed at aligning candidate profiles with job descriptions efficiently. If you require additional information extraction beyond these three fields, you have the flexibility to incorporate more fields into the model.
In case you're unfamiliar with the process of training the model, fret not. In a subsequent blog post, I'll delve into the intricacies of model training, providing step-by-step guidance. You'll find an upload link within that post, which you can utilize to train your own model according to your specific requirements. Stay tuned for the upcoming blog post, where I'll provide detailed instructions to help you make the most out of the "Resume Processing Model" for your recruitment needs.
Step 3. Screening using ChatGPT
The information we obtain from the previous step will be passed to the Power Automate ChatGPT model. This model will screen candidates for the job opening and provide us with information on whether the candidate is suitable or not, along with the reasons for the assessment.
Again, we will add the Ai Builder model “Generate Text using ChatGPT” and again here we need to create a model that I created for resume scanning. I created a model “Ai Resume Screening”
There is another blog on how you can create ChatGPT responses In Power Automate please refer to that post to create your own PowerAutomate ChatGPT model.
Here is what I created.
With 3 dynamics inputs,
“Previous instruction should be ignored. Write in the English language for a response. Do not explain what you are doing. Do not self-reference. You are hiring a manager for the role given in detail. Role responsibility is also given below and candidate details as well please check candidate information and suggest whether this candidate is suitable for the given job or not. First start with whether it is suitable or not suitable. Then write a note, about why it is not suitable or suitable. For this role.
The job requirement is below.
- Knowledge Required: Business Strategy, Market Analysis, Financial Planning
- Skill Required: Leadership, Decision-making, Negotiation
- Attitude Required: Proactive, Visionary, Responsible
- Responsibility: Overseeing company operations, Strategic Planning, Building relationships
- Job Description: Lead the company toward its mission and vision and ensure financial performance and growth.
Experience Of years " 5
candidate details are here,
So information we are getting from the “Resume Processing Model” We are passing “AI Resume Screening” to verify candidate is suitable or not using AI.
Step 4. Final Action - Send an Email To the Hiring Manager
Finally, based on the extracted information, you can send an email to the candidate, either inviting them for an interview or thanking them for their interest.
- To: Specify the email address you want to send.
- Subject: I took 74 char from my output to highlight candidate stability.
- Body: Generated Text by Chat GPT.
Here is my code for this.
Here is the image of the send email action.
By automating the résumé screening process, you’ll save time, reduce errors, and ensure a consistent approach. Power Automate empowers you to focus on the most promising candidates, ultimately enhancing productivity and improving the hiring experience.
Remember, this flow can be customized further to meet your specific needs.
Happy automating!
