The future of MSc nursing dissertations – a victim of its own success?

In our blog this week, Dr Nicola Roberts (@DrNRoberts) and Mr Ben Parkinson (@ParkinsonBen1) from Glasgow Caledonian University discuss the current changes affecting student research in the NHS and the future for MSc dissertations in nursing.

The Masters of Sciences degree (MSc) is becoming increasingly popular with nurses and provides a useful stepping stone into advanced nursing roles and/or Doctoral level study (e.g. PhD or Professional Doctorate). For nursing students, the most daunting and time consuming part of their MSc is often the dissertation component. Students usually do a structured literature review or undertake a small piece of research. However, the rules around student research in the NHS are changing and may affect some nursing students completing MSc dissertations.

What is a nursing dissertation? The nursing dissertation usually involves a large written piece of coursework (6-16,000 words) based on an independent study at the end of a University MSc programme. Students are supported during their dissertation by an academic supervisor to undertake research or a review. For nursing students, the MSc dissertation is an opportunity to focus on a particular area of interest and to study the topic in great detail. The MSc dissertation is a demanding assessment and can involve many months of effort and a high level of independent study. Some of the challenges faced by students include working independently, effectively working with their supervisor, having to meet deadlines, and producing high quality academic material. In addition, many students also have other commitments (e.g. employment, child care) and/or have additional support needs (e.g. dyslexia). These factors can make the MSc dissertation both demanding, but also extremely rewarding.

Student research in the NHS Nursing students often want to undertake a research study in their place of work, but all research needs to have ethical approval and students working in the NHS will have to make sure they are eligible to complete their research in the NHS. The guidance on student research in the NHS changed and the new guidance is available online via the Health Research Authority (HRA) . The HRA changes came into effect in September 2021 and affect those completing research for the main purpose of achieving an educational qualification (e.g. Degree, Masters, or Doctorate). The main changes include new eligibility criteria, which changes the type of students who can complete research in the NHS. The new guidance states undergraduate students, for example, will no longer be able to complete research involving the NHS and that Doctoral students studying Health and Social Care related topics will be able to complete research in the NHS ( full guidance ).

The guidance is slightly more confusing for MSc nursing students. Not all MSc students will be able to apply for NHS ethical approval and some types of student MSc students will not be allowed to do research in the NHS. Fortunately, nurses will be one group of students who can conduct research in the NHS, but certain rules apply, nurses need to be studying a Health and Social Care course and the University department supporting the student also needs to be active in Health and Social Care research. The HRA have produced a helpful toolkit for students or supervisors , to help them determine whether their research will be eligible to apply for NHS Research Ethics approval under the new guidance.

Alternatives to student research in the NHS Given the complexity of nursing dissertations and the challenges faced by many nursing students, it is prudent to consider the different options available when completing an MSc dissertation. Being flexible and creative will give nursing students the greatest chance of success when completing their MSc dissertation.

Dissertation options. • Research involving the NHS (check eligibility using student research toolkit ) • Non-research activity in the NHS (e.g. service evaluation, audit, a discussion with R&D may still be needed). • Research activity not involving NHS patient, staff, or resources – student participant study or using organisations or charities, social media. • Literature review (e.g. systematic review). • Write research protocol for future study. • Produce anonymous case report (consent/approval needed).

Other challenges for nursing dissertations Another challenge is the increasing numbers of students completing MSc qualifications. Each year more nurses are seeking MSc qualification, which is excellent for patient care and the nursing profession. However, increasing student numbers and the needs to complete a dissertation can create pressure on the NHS and make it difficult to provide the necessary support for growing numbers of students. With increasing numbers, nursing students can find themselves struggling to come up with an original idea and some popular topics can become over-researched. For example, recently the number of students wanting to study COVID-19 has grown rapidly.

It is also common for nursing students to focus on particular groups of people and/or recruitment pathways. For example, the growth of MSc dissertations has led to an increase in the amount of research being conducting on students, which raises concerns about whether students are being overly burdened by invitations to participate in research. The growth in the numbers of nursing students studying MSc qualifications has also put pressure on finding appropriate academic supervisors, who can support students during their studies. It is important Universities balance the increased demand for MSc study, whilst also maintaining quality for students. Innovative strategies used by Universities include flexible academic supervision, using online methods, incorporating group supervision, and also changing the format of dissertations to better reflect journal publications. It is clear that traditional dissertations may need to adapt in the near future to be fit for purpose and to support the large number of students and the changes to research ethics in the NHS.

About Nursing Research Papers

When do nursing students write research papers.

You may need to write a research paper for any of the nursing courses you take. Research papers help develop critical thinking and communication skills. They allow you to learn how to conduct research and critically review publications.

That said, not every class will require in-depth, 10-20-page papers. The more advanced your degree path, the more you can expect to write and conduct research. If you're in an associate or bachelor's program, you'll probably write a few papers each semester or term.

Do Nursing Students Conduct Original Research?

Most of the time, you won't be designing, conducting, and evaluating new research. Instead, your projects will focus on learning the research process and the scientific method. You'll achieve these objectives by evaluating existing nursing literature and sources and defending a thesis.

However, many nursing faculty members do conduct original research. So, you may get opportunities to participate in, and publish, research articles.

Example Research Project Scenario:

In your maternal child nursing class, the professor assigns the class a research paper regarding developmentally appropriate nursing interventions for the pediatric population. While that may sound specific, you have almost endless opportunities to narrow down the focus of your writing. 

You could choose pain intervention measures in toddlers. Conversely, you can research the effects of prolonged hospitalization on adolescents' social-emotional development.

What Does a Nursing Research Paper Include?

Your professor should provide a thorough guideline of the scope of the paper. In general, an undergraduate nursing research paper will consist of:

Introduction : A brief overview of the research question/thesis statement your paper will discuss. You can include why the topic is relevant.

Body : This section presents your research findings and allows you to synthesize the information and data you collected. You'll have a chance to articulate your evaluation and answer your research question. The length of this section depends on your assignment.

Conclusion : A brief review of the information and analysis you presented throughout the body of the paper. This section is a recap of your paper and another chance to reassert your thesis.

The best advice is to follow your instructor's rubric and guidelines. Remember to ask for help whenever needed, and avoid overcomplicating the assignment!

How to Choose a Nursing Research Topic

The sheer volume of prospective nursing research topics can become overwhelming for students. Additionally, you may get the misconception that all the 'good' research ideas are exhausted. However, a personal approach may help you narrow down a research topic and find a unique angle.

Writing your research paper about a topic you value or connect with makes the task easier. Additionally, you should consider the material's breadth. Topics with plenty of existing literature will make developing a research question and thesis smoother.

Finally, feel free to shift gears if necessary, especially if you're still early in the research process. If you start down one path and have trouble finding published information, ask your professor if you can choose another topic.

Plan Ahead: Break down the writing process into smaller sections, especially if it seems overwhelming. Give yourself time for each step in the process.

Research: Use your resources and ask for help from the librarian or instructor. The rest should come together quickly once you find high-quality studies to analyze.

Outline: Create an outline to help you organize your thoughts. Then, you can plug in information throughout the research process. 

Clear Language: Use plain language as much as possible to get your point across. Jargon is inevitable when writing academic nursing papers, but keep it to a minimum.

Cite Properly: Accurately cite all sources using the appropriate citation style. Nursing research papers will almost always implement APA style. Check out the resources below for some excellent reference management options.

Revise and Edit: Once you finish your first draft, put it away for one to two hours or, preferably, a whole day. Once you've placed some space between you and your paper, read through and edit for clarity, coherence, and grammatical errors. Mendeley is a free reference management software. It stores, organizes, and cites references. It has a Microsoft plug-in that inserts and correctly formats APA citations.

MScR Nursing Studies

The MSc by Research programme in Nursing Studies offers education and development for all those interested in developing research skills in the field of Nursing.

The MScR Nursing Studies is a postgraduate programme designed to provide comprehensive research training in the field of nursing. This unique course allows you to engage in research activities throughout the year while concurrently undertaking specialized taught courses, enriching research skills and expanding your knowledge base. Full-time students must take compulsory courses within one year, however our programme is also available part-time over two to three years. 

Our programme offers the possibility to work with and be supervised by a range academics whose background in both therapeutic practice and research is compatible with the student's proposed area of research. Your supervisor will meet regularly with you throughout the period of study, with the focus and content of supervision meetings negotiated jointly depending on your needs.  Successful completion of the MScR requires a dissertation, normally in the form of a report of research work, of 20,000 words.

Our department, established in 1956, was Europe’s first university-based centre for nursing education and research. Research in cardiovascular care: a position statement of the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professionals of the European Society of Cardiology

To deliver optimal patient care, evidence-based care is advocated and research is needed to support health care staff of all disciplines in deciding which options to use in their daily practice. Due to the increasing complexity of cardiac care across the life span of patients combined with the increasing opportunities and challenges in multidisciplinary research, the Science Committee of the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professionals (CCNAP) recognised the need for a position statement to guide researchers, policymakers and funding bodies to contribute to the advancement of the body of knowledge that is needed to further improve cardiovascular care. In this paper, knowledge gaps in current research related to cardiovascular patient care are identified, upcoming challenges are explored and recommendations for future research are given.

The MSc Nursing Studies offers you the option to develop expertise in your chosen field, and its flexibility allows you to choose the most appropriate modules from our CPD portfolio. A module gained from another HEI may be accredited following a discussion with the course leader. Leadership for Public and Community Services (15 credits)

The module aims to critically develop the student’s knowledge and skills to enable them to work effectively within the context of leadership and service development within the workplace. Students will be facilitated to develop and enhance their own leadership role within their chosen profession, and to critically explore and evaluate their own leadership style.

Health Promotion: Targets and Evidence (15 credits)

This module will explore the latest evidence and Government targets for maintaining healthy communities and supporting the public health agenda.

Service Development and Quality Improvement (15 credits)

This module aims to provide managers and practitioners with the opportunity to explore legislation and policy directions in public and community services. There will be a focus on the impact of the practitioner’s role in leading the development of services in a way that gives high importance to quality enhancing.

Principles of Advanced Practice (15 credits)

The module aims to enable students to critically examine the concept of advanced practice and to apply their skills to advancing nursing practice in their own practice.

Essentials of Advanced Nursing Practice (15 credits)

Social research methods (30 credits).

The purpose of this module is to familiarise level 7 students with major approaches to social research; develop skills in designing a research proposal; enhance their skills in qualitative and quantitative methods; enhance their critical appreciation of research; and ensure students are able to apply relevant approaches and methods to their own research project or extended literature review at masters level.

Negotiated Work Based Learning Project (60 credits)

This module aims to provide you with the opportunity to undertake a ‘professional learning and development project’ that is designed to plan how you will improve your own professional practice and understanding. You will reflect on and critically analyse your professional development and learning needs and action plan how these can be developed both through your Masters programme and beyond.

Advanced Practitioner Inquiry (30 credits)

This module will develop your skills in research and inquiry methodologies in order to design a work based project that has the potential to improve practice. It will explore approaches to practitioner inquiry methods appropriate for your area of practice and enable critical reflection upon your role.

Physical assessment (30 credits)

The aim of this module is to enable the experienced practitioner to develop the skills of physical assessment in order to apply this to their clinical area. It enables the student to undertake an autonomous assessment to start to plan appropriate care or referral for their patients. It provides the experienced practitioner with a more advanced knowledge base, communication skills and clinical examination to increase confidence and aid with patient care decisions.

Independent and Supplementary Non-Medical Prescribing (45 credits)

This module is designed to support practitioners in developing the evidence based knowledge and skills required for undertaking safe, appropriate and cost effective independent and supplementary prescribing roles. This will be within the context of current legislation and local and national policy. An emphasis will be placed on a team and public health approach to prescribing decisions and practice. The module aims to build on the students existing knowledge base and physical assessment skills and further enhance autonomous practice. This module leads to a NMC recordable qualification.

Advanced Work Based Project (60 credits)

This module is a culmination of your Masters study and provides the opportunity to synthesise professional and academic learning. It will support you to undertake a substantial work based project that is designed to develop your own professional practice and address a practice, organisational or service issue that you have already identified in your workplace or professional field. Building on your understanding of advanced practitioner inquiry methodologies, you will be encouraged to consider improvement and leadership strategies to support the successful management of your project with the potential to deliver real outcomes that can transform practice.

This module is designed to develop your understanding of a range of advanced inquiry and research methodologies appropriate for practitioners, in order to design a real work based project or practice development activity that has clear objectives related to your own professional development or the development of practice in your setting. you will be expected to focus on specific service, organisational or practice related issues and take initiative and leadership. It will explore approaches to advanced practitioner inquiry and innovative research methods appropriate for your area of practice. It will enable critical reflection upon your position as a ‘practitioner or insider researcher’ and the ethical implications that could arise during the project.

Developing Research Capability (60 credits)

This aims of this module are:

  • To engage you in scholarly enquiry to develop a critical understanding of social science research.
  • For you to develop research capability through formulating and implementing a proposal for research related to your field of practice.

How we'll teach you

Coursework and assessments.

You will be actively involved in a range of learning, teaching and assessment approaches as part of postgraduate degree. Teaching methods will include classroom and online lectures, face-to-face and online seminars, workshops and  tutorials. Such active approaches aim to put you at the centre of your learning so you are involved and engaged in all aspects of your assessment and learning. Your programme will be facilitated using a variety of media and online tools such as UniHub, podcasts and wikis. You will have flexible access to a diverse range of online resources, quizzes and learning materials as well as collaborative tools with which you can engage and learn with your peers.

One of the central tenants of post-graduate learning is to be able to take an active role in your own learning. For every day timetables study day it is expected that you undertake a further 4 hours of study.

Your progress on the modules is assessed using written assessments, online tests, OSCEs and written exams.

Feedback will be given to you verbally, in writing and through your formative assessments.

Qualifications

In order to be accepted on to this course, you will need:

  • A nursing registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council UK
  • To be currently practising as a registered nurse
  • An honours degree of 2:2 or above in nursing
  • To ideally have evidence of employer support – normally in the form of a reference
  • Evidence of commitment to study, professional development to date, leadership and management potential, consideration of a coherent study pathway and plans for future professional development and progression. This will be evidenced in the applicant’s personal statement.

Additional admissions criteria:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available where students can transfer in up to 120 credits (two-thirds of the total number of credits required for the award).

In exceptional circumstances, students who do not have a degree but who have successfully completed Level 7 CPD modules or who can provide evidence of their ability to pursue successfully postgraduate-level study may also be considered

UK students are eligible to apply for this course but must be currently registered as a nurse and be working within the UK health service.

This course is not available to EU or international students.

Some of our students have their course fees covered by CPPD contracts between NHS trusts and Middlesex University.

Alternatively, other students pay their own fees or are sponsored by their employer (but not under a CPPD contract). Please view our dedicated fee page for more information.

Please note that for MSc award part-time students, the 60 credit dissertation module (and only that module) is priced at £32 per credit.

Additional costs

You will be asked, by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), to pay for the non-medical prescribing recordable qualification. We ask that you do not buy any text books before discussing it with the course leader as all texts on the reading lists are available from the library.

We cover your costs for the day-to-day things that you need to do well in your studies.

Postgraduate scholarships

You may be eligible for one of our scholarships including:

  • The Alumni Postgraduate Award – for all UK Middlesex alumni a 20% fee reduction
  • The Commonwealth Scholarship – full course fees, airfares and a living allowance
  • The Chevening Scholarship – full course fees
  • The European Academic Awards – £1000 to £7000 for students showing academic excellence
  • Regional or International Merit Award –up to £2,000 towards course fees.

For international students, we also have a limited number of other awards specific to certain regions, and work in partnership with funding providers in your country to help support you financially with your study.

Fees disclaimers

1. UK fees: The university reserves the right to increase postgraduate tuition fees in line with changes to legislation, regulation and any government guidance or decisions. The tuition fees for part-time UK study are subject to annual review and we reserve the right to increase the fees each academic year by no more than the level of inflation.

2. International fees: Tuition fees are subject to annual review and we reserve the right to increase the fees each academic year by no more than the level of inflation.

Any annual increase in tuition fees as provided for above will be notified to students at the earliest opportunity in advance of the academic year to which any applicable inflationary rise may apply.
