The Benefits of Reading for Fun

There’s a powerful academic impact, new research reveals, when students are voracious, voluntary readers.

Mrs. Mason was “the perfect reading ambassador,” said Sandra Martin-Chang, recalling an early reading role model, her high school English and drama teacher. “She encouraged me to read excellent books with great storylines. We read The Handmaid’s Tale , and it was fabulous.… We’d envision it first and then think about how to enact it and bring it to life.”

Now a professor of education at Concordia University, Martin-Chang studies how reading storybooks and novels influences cognitive development.

In a new study published in Reading and Writing , she and her colleagues found significant differences between students who read for pleasure outside of class—immersing themselves in fantasy novels or spy thrillers, for example—and those who primarily read books to satisfy school assignments. Not only was there a powerful link between reading for fun and stronger language skills, but students who disliked reading frequently attributed their negative outlook to experiences they had in classrooms. Too much emphasis on analyzing the compositional nuts and bolts of texts and reading merely to absorb information came at a psychological cost, the researchers found, as students disengaged from voluntary reading.

In the study, Martin-Chang and her colleagues surveyed 200 university undergraduates, asking them about their reading interests, how often they read for pleasure, what motivated them, and what experiences helped shape their attitudes toward reading. They were also asked to identify authors they had read in the past—a proxy for measuring how many books they had read. The young adults then took a series of tests to gauge their reading ability.

“We found that often children’s experience in elementary school is far more positive, and then it drops in high school,” said Martin-Chang. While children in kindergarten and early elementary school tend to read storybooks as they develop their reading skills—often sharing the experience with an adult—by high school, the nature of reading changes as students are expected to read a steady diet of more challenging, information-rich texts. Somewhere during that transition, a love of reading seems to fade.

In the study, 35 percent of students pinpointed a specific reason: They didn’t enjoy reading because “being asked to analyze books in high school made it less pleasurable.”

But analyzing the elements of good writing—how persuasion works, how figurative language can elevate texts—is essential to teaching kids the full range of their expressive potential, and Martin-Chang isn’t suggesting that we read only for fun. “Competence is very, very important. We can’t skip straight to books children love without teaching them how to do it right,” she said. She likens reading to eating a well-balanced diet: “The people who say chocolate is good for you don’t recommend eating it to the exclusion of all other things.” Focusing primarily on analyzing texts and gathering information—a shift that tends to occur in middle and high school—can send the signal that reading is merely a utilitarian undertaking, robbing it of its powerful connection to human imagination, passion, and creativity, making it a lot less desirable.

We need to take reading for fun as seriously as we take academic reading, if we’re going to sustain voluntary reading through middle school and high school, and into adulthood.

Expand Their Options

For Martin-Chang, reading for pleasure isn’t a diversion from rigorous academics—it’s a gratifying form of cognitive exercise, one that is both enjoyable and intellectually beneficial.

“We don’t just want kids exercising in gym class, we want them to continue to exercise when they get home,” said Martin-Chang. “So it’s the same with reading. In school, we want to show them a range of things that hopefully they’ll pick up, go home, and continue to do on their own time.”

Even light reading provides a host of benefits, increasing verbal and creative skills, nourishing our capacity for empathy, and even reducing prejudice against stigmatized groups—all skills that are developed as readers become accustomed to inhabiting unfamiliar worlds, seeing things from new perspectives, and contemplating how a chain of events can lead to unforeseen outcomes.

Yet reading for fun—particularly the kinds of books that aren’t part of classical literature or that don’t carry literary prestige—is often considered less useful. “It’s a false dichotomy,” said Martin-Chang. “People feel like we either let the kids be creative, do what they want, and we give them choice, or we get serious about things and they excel and they’re a good student. It’s serious or it’s fun. And that dichotomy is completely misguided.”

That’s why providing students with a rich and varied reading diet can make a difference. “Offer more choice,” said Martin-Chang. Introduce students to Romeo and Juliet , but give them the option to read The Fault in Our Stars as well; let them read comic books and manga, sports writing and plays, sci-fi and horror novels. In other words, it seems clear that if we want students to build literacy skills, it’s better for them to consume dozens of texts that they love, connect with, or feel inspired by, instead of grudgingly reading one because it’s assigned.

While children’s literacy skill development begins at home, teachers play a profoundly important part in encouraging students to love reading, a point that Martin-Chang makes clear when she’s training preservice teachers.

“People will either talk about teachers that loved reading, encouraged them as readers and really lit a fire, or they’ll talk about teachers who did the exact opposite,” said Martin-Chang. “They'll talk about teachers that took something that was once pleasurable and diminished it, or they’ll talk about teachers that didn’t seem to like reading themselves, or made them feel like less of a reader.”

In the study, Martin-Chang points to research on preservice teachers showing that “over half reported receiving little to no enjoyment from reading.” The teachers often attributed their disinterest to experiences they had in school, a finding that Martin-Chang and her colleagues called “especially concerning,” alluding to the cyclical nature of reading habits. “Teachers carry immense power in influencing students’ attitudes toward reading,” the researchers concluded.

So part of Martin-Chang’s mission is to convince teachers—and everyone else—that there’s tremendous value in giving students more choice in what they read, including books that may appear to be self-indulgent or have little intellectual merit.

In the classroom, said Martin-Chang, model a love of reading—go beyond grammar and meaning and inhabit the narrative worlds on the page. Emphasize choice, and give students opportunities to read and share during class time. Teachers have shared their own strategies to promote choice: Expand your classroom library beyond the traditional literary canon, and make sure it includes books that reflect students’ backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and passions . Offer plenty of ungraded ways for them to think about their reading: To ensure that they do the reading without the pressure of grades, pair kids up as reading accountability partners ; to enliven and dramatize books, let them act out scenes ; to build a thriving community of readers, set up book clubs or book tastings . Avoid rote or mechanical exercises like reading logs , which can create the impression that reading is a chore to be completed and then quickly set aside.

And if books aren’t normally a part of your curriculum, you can still show an interest in what your students are reading by making connections to a lesson. Start a science experiment by referencing Harry Potter , for example, or use dystopian novels to discuss totalitarianism, propaganda, or human rights.

“It’s important to teach children how to read,” said Martin-Chang. “And once we do that, we need to make it worthwhile. We’ve got to give them a reason. We’ve got to give them a view once they climb that mountain.”

Reading for Pleasure Helps Kids’ Brain Development

The simple and fun act of reading for pleasure in early childhood produces better cognition, mental health and educational attainment in adolescence

Good brain health at this age is directly linked to better mental heath, cognition and educational attainment in adolescence and adulthood. It can also  provide resilience  in times of stress.

But, sadly, brain development can be hampered by poverty. Studies have shown that early childhood poverty  is a risk factor  for lower educational attainment. It is also associated with differences in brain structure, poorer cognition, behavioural problems and mental health symptoms.

This shows just how important it is to give all children an equal chance in life. But until sufficient measures are taken to reduce inequality and improve outcomes, our new study,  published in Psychological Medicine , shows one low-cost activity that may at least counteract some of the negative effects of poverty on the brain: reading for pleasure.

Wealth and brain health

Higher family income in childhood  tends to be associated  with higher scores on assessments of language, working memory and the processing of social and emotional cues. Research  has shown  that the brain’s outer layer, called the cortex, has a larger surface are and is thicker in people with higher socioeconomic status than in poorer people.

Being wealthy has also been linked with having more grey matter (tissue in the outer layers of the brain) in the frontal and temporal regions (situated just behind the ears) of the brain. And we know that these areas support the development of cognitive skills.

The association between wealth and cognition is greatest in the most  economically disadvantaged families . Among children from lower income families, small differences in income are associated with relatively large differences in surface area. Among children from higher income families, similar income increments are associated with smaller differences in surface area.

Importantly, the results from one study found that when mothers with low socioeconomic status were given monthly cash gifts,  their children’s brain health improved . On average, they developed more changeable brains (plasticity) and better adaptation to their environment. They also found it easier to subsequently develop cognitive skills.

Our socioeconomic status will even  influence our decision-making . A report from the London School of Economics found that poverty seems to shift people’s focus towards meeting immediate needs and threats. They become more focused on the present with little space for future plans - and also tended to be more averse to taking risks.

It also showed that children from low socioeconomic background families seem to have poorer stress coping mechanisms and feel less self-confident.

But what are the reasons for these effects of poverty on the brain and academic achievement? Ultimately, more research is needed to fully understand why poverty affects the brain in this way. There are many contributing factors which will interact. These include poor nutrition and stress on the family caused by financial problems. A lack of safe spaces and good facilities to play and exercise in, as well as limited access to computers and other educational support systems, could also play a role.

Reading for pleasure

There has been much interest of late in levelling up. So what measures can we put in place  to counteract the negative effects  of poverty which could be applicable globally?

Our observational study shows a dramatic and positive link between a fun and simple activity – reading for pleasure in early childhood – and better cognition, mental health and educational attainment in adolescence.

We analysed the data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) project, a US national cohort study with more than 10,000 participants across different ethnicities and and varying socioeconomic status. The dataset contained measures of young adolescents ages nine to 13 and how many years they had spent reading for pleasure during their early childhood. It also included data on their cognitive, mental health and brain health.

About half of the group of adolescents starting reading early in childhood, whereas the other, approximately half, had never read in early childhood, or had begun reading late on.

We discovered that reading for pleasure in early childhood was linked with better scores on comprehensive cognition assessments and better educational attainment in young adolescence. It was also associated with fewer mental health problems and less time spent on electronic devices.

Our results showed that reading for pleasure in early childhood can be beneficial regardless of socioeconomic status. It may also be helpful regardless of the children’s initial intelligence level. That’s because the effect didn’t depend on how many years of education the children’s parents had had – which is our best measure for very young children’s intelligence (IQ is partially heritable).

We also discovered that children who read for pleasure had larger cortical surface areas in several brain regions that are significantly related to cognition and mental health (including the frontal areas). Importantly, this was the case regardless of socioeconomic status. The result therefore suggests that reading for pleasure in early childhood may be an effective intervention to counteract the negative effects of poverty on the brain.

While our current data was obtained from families across the United States, future analyses will include investigations with data from other countries – including developing countries, when comparable data become available.

So how could reading boost cognition exactly? It is already known that language learning, including through reading and discussing books, is a key factor in healthy brain development. It is also a  critical building block  for other forms of cognition,  including executive functions  (such as memory, planning and self-control) and social intelligence.

Because there are many different reasons why poverty may negatively affect brain development, we need a comprehensive and holistic approach to improving outcomes. While reading for pleasure is unlikely, on its own, to fully address the challenging effects of poverty on the brain, it provides a simple method for improving children’s development and attainment.

Our findings also have important implications for parents, educators and policy makers in facilitating reading for pleasure in young children. It could, for example, help counteract some of the negative effects  on young children’s cognitive development  of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Five Reasons Reading for Fun Will Make You a Better Student (in Any Discipline)

1. People who read regularly are less likely to make grammar mistakes in their own writing. There’s a definite link between the amount of time students spend reading other people’s work and the number of grammar errors present in their own. In many ways, this relationship is simply logical; it makes sense that exposure to properly-structured sentences and paragraphs will make it easier to follow these same rules when you sit down to write. Similarly, if you’re constantly reading texts with few to no errors, your own mistakes will start to stand out to you--even if you can’t explain exactly what rule you’ve violated, you’ll get the intuitive sense that something is wrong. Earlier this year, I spoke to many students who were struggling to properly format sections of dialogue in their narrative essays. If you rarely read novels, the rules that govern the positioning of quotation marks, commas, and periods in transcribed speech can definitely be difficult to follow. However, if you’ve spent a lot of time reading fiction books filled with conversation between characters, you’ll likely find that imitating the grammar rules followed by these authors comes as second nature to you. Formatting dialogue is just one example, though--the grammar skills you pick up through reading recreationally are just as beneficial to students writing lab reports or annotated bibliographies.

2. Reading can dramatically expand your vocabulary. Have you ever found yourself in a position where you have a complicated point to express in a paper and, although you understand what you want to say in your own mind, you just can’t find the words to get the idea across? Studies have shown a clear link between the frequency with which people read and the size of their vocabularies (Wiesen). Reading exposes you to a range of new words and often provides the necessary context for you to determine their meanings without needing to look up definitions, so you may find your vocabulary expanding without even realizing that this process is occurring. As you can imagine, a large vocabulary makes it much easier to express complex ideas in a clear, accessible way. Relatedly, reading a diversity of writers can expose you to different writing styles and allow you to assess which ones appeal to you most and which seem most effective for certain forms of communication; for instance, you may find that a direct, blunt writing style serves well for a persuasive essay, while a style with more complex sentences is effective for a descriptive paper. Regardless of what field you study, a broad vocabulary and a sense of how best to use it will be hugely advantageous when completing assignments.

3. Reading books unrelated to your post-secondary studies can diversify your knowledge base and develop your interest in new subjects. In general, I don’t consider myself someone with a particular interest in history. However, I do love feel-good books about the American south, so I recently read Fannie Flagg’s novel The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion . One of the characters in this book is a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of World War II, and I found myself completely drawn in by the historical details about these female pilots who endured discrimination and disenfranchisement while training pilots and ferrying planes. After I’d finished the book, I spent a long time scouring the internet for more information about the WASPs, and I know I’ll be more open-minded about studying this period of American history in the future. This reaction is representative of the ways in which reading novels can expand your horizons, exposing you to concepts and life experiences of which you might never have become aware. Students often have difficulty with open-ended assignments where professors give them free reign to research a subject they’re interested in, as long as they follow certain guidelines. Without a list of topics to choose from, it can be difficult to find a subject that both interests the student and seems relevant to the assignment. However, avid readers are exposed to such a diverse array of subject matter that they’ve likely developed curiosities about a number of complex topics and would be eager to learn more while fulfilling an academic requirement. For instance, someone who’d recently read the Canadian graphic novel Tangles might choose to learn more about Alzheimer's for a psychology project, while a student who’d enjoyed Jenny Downham’s Unbecoming might write a sociology paper about the experiences of LGBTQ+ teens in high school. Expanding your worldview and learning about a diverse array of subjects is beneficial in any context, but it’s particularly helpful for university students.

4. Reading full-length books improves your ability to focus for extended periods of time. Recent studies have indicated that, on a typical day, as many as 70% of students come to class not having done the assigned reading (Gooblar). Often, the factors preventing students from reading assigned texts are practical in nature; for instance, it may be necessary to prioritize the completion of a major assignment over the reading of an article that will be briefly discussed in class. However, it is also common for students to have the time for readings but lack the attention span to complete them. The human attention span is fairly short, and research indicates that it has been shrinking in recent years (Watson). When students are accustomed to receiving information in short bursts, it can be difficult to plow through a lengthy textbook chapter or a full novel for a literature course. However, students who read recreationally are accustomed to setting aside long blocks of time to focus on a certain text. They’ve learned what conditions make reading most comfortable for them, and they’ve likely developed strategies to maintain concentration. Therefore, when it comes time to read something for a class, they simply have to apply the strategies they use during self-motivated reading. If you develop a reading habit, you’ll likely find that completing your assigned readings seems like a less overwhelming task. You may also notice improved focus while writing assignments or attending lectures; after all, an extended attention span has wide-ranging benefits.

5. Reading recreationally can improve your critical thinking skills. A study conducted in 2012 found a positive correlation between voluntary reading and high scores on critical thinking tests (Hawkins). This result is not unexpected. Although relaxing with a fiction book is different than rigorously studying an academic text, you’re still required to exercise the skills that come into play during the act of critical thinking. Reading a novel requires you to keep track of a range of characters and their relationships in order to properly understand the progression of the plot. Often, subtle clues dropped by the author serve to foreshadow developments later in the book, and readers must be attentive to these to fully appreciate how the story unfolds. Furthermore, when you’re engrossed in a compelling novel, you may find yourself trying to predict what plot twists are on the horizon or use the information you’ve been given about a character to understand why they would make a seemingly illogical decision. All of these mental exercises are examples of critical thinking, and you’ll likely find that, the more time you spend reading, the more naturally they take place. As your critical thinking skills strengthen, you’ll become more adept at interpreting texts of all kinds, including academic texts which you must analyze for class.

Reading recreationally isn’t just an entertaining pastime--it’s also a great way to sharpen your academic skills and become a more effective student. Whether you’re reading non-fiction books, romance novels, or the latest dystopian series that’s taken pop culture by storm, the benefits are undeniable. However, for students who have never taken a strong interest in literature, it can be difficult to cultivate a reading habit. For most people, it’s hard to imagine life without reading. However, not everyone can read. Around 15% of the world’s population has some form of learning disability that prevents them from being able to read. This means that they cannot interpret words and sentences on paper or digital screens.

Reading is one of the most popular hobbies in America, with nearly three-quarters of adults reading at least one book per year. Reading can take many forms, from novels to comics to magazines to blogs. It can be done privately or shared with friends.

Here are some tips for better reading:-

• Know why you want to read. What are you getting out of reading? What are you looking for? If reading isn’t motivating enough for you, make reading something else. It’s okay to do something else.
• Pick the right genre. Reading is fun, but it can also be a chore. That’s because our minds can be easily distracted. If you pick the wrong genre for you, you could end up reading to the point of exhaustion. But on the other hand, if you pick the right genre for you, you might learn new things, or get to know different characters better. Some genres include thrillers, romance novels, mysteries, science fiction, and even picture books. Choose the genre that works for you and read.
• Read aloud to yourself. Listening to yourself reading is a great way to improve your skills. You can also do this if you are reading in a public space. You will help yourself realize when you read words wrong or catch on to grammar and sentence structure.
• Never stop reading. If it’s not interesting for you, you’re going to get bored very fast. Just keep reading. There’s no need to read only what interests you; at the same time, you can’t read everything.
• If you find yourself stuck in a book, don’t force yourself to finish it. If you don’t care for it, set it aside and come back to it later. You can only read a book or magazine a certain number of times before you might start to lose interest.

6 – How to read more

The first thing you can do is start reading more. Whether you want to read on an e-reader or a traditional book, the basic rules are the same:

• Find the tpocs that are interesting.
• Start with your topic of interest.
• Listening to audiobooks will give you a great opportunity to step away from distractions and enjoy a book that you wouldn’t have the time or patience to read on your own. Audiobooks have been my best friend during the work week. Whether I’m commuting or heading out for a run, I’ve found that listening to a book or an audiobook on my commute helps me to listen and do both of those things at once.

The kind of books that got me into reading are self-help books. They inspired me in a way no other genre could. The writer Mark Manson is the greatest of all time to me. If you'll just search for self-help books over the internet then among the best sellers, two of the books would be his. The kind of discipline they brought into my life transformed me into a completely different person. These kinds of books give us an opportunity to dive deep into ourselves and learn about our true potential which is what happened to me and brought me into writing.

Reading for pleasure is much more than just going through a text. It is also a way of connecting with the text we are reading. In this pleasure of reading the essay, we will discuss how one can enjoy reading and make it a habit. Reading can change our life. It increases our knowledge, motivates and inspires us and elevates our doubts on a topic. The reading that we do by ourselves in our own way at our pace gives us the pleasure of reading. Such reading generates our interests, inculcates values in us and inspires us. On the other hand, the reading that is forced on us may have the reverse effect. The purpose of reading becomes merely pleasing the teacher and passing the exams, which normally happens with students studying their academic subjects.

There has been a rapid change over the last decades in the way children read and learn. The nature and form of study have changed radically. As a consequence of rapid technological advances, multimodal texts are now readily available. It includes voices, sound and music, stance, intonation, gesture, and movement, as well as a print and image. These exist in different media such as computers, laptops, mobiles, films, radios and books.

Today’s children like to read by viewing and visualising the topic. Many surveys confirm that children choose to read a very diverse range of texts. The most preferred reading materials reported upon by primary children in this study were: jokes, magazines, comics, fiction, signs, poetry and websites. In a survey, it was found that seven in ten young people said they would rather watch TV/DVD/video than read a book. It also depicts that many people took preference using the Internet over reading books.

In the 21st century, do children choose to read for pleasure, enjoyment and leisure? Are they reading willingly, for they are being forced to read by teachers to pass the exams? Does the desire to read independently come into students’ minds? Do they want to explore things with their reading and would like to become young readers of today and tomorrow? Finding answers to all these questions is not tough, as students are now showing very less interest in reading. They are getting conserved and limited to academic studies only.

When children read for pleasure, they get “hooked on books”. They gather a lot of information and also learn language skills. Many people are so concerned about reading that they become adequate readers. They learn the vocabulary and develop the ability to understand and use complex grammatical constructions. This develops good writing skills in them, and they become good writers.

Reading for pleasure is oriented towards finding personal meaning and purpose. It enhances the understanding of the world, the desire to understand, make things work, make connections, engage emotionally and feel deeply among people. Reading helps in finding resonances in the text. Readers can understand the meaning and execute them in their lives to become good humans. Reading a web of fiction or nonfiction inspires and motivates them. Many readers keep their first book as a child. Some of them retain the text, which connects to a significant memory. These all reflect the desire to read, indicating a degree of delight in reading itself. Readers find different reasons for reading.

Effective Teaching of Reading in Education Essay

Effective teaching of reading is an important aspect as reading does not come as naturally as speaking. Children do not learn how to read just by being exposed to reading materials, but rather, for them to learn this important skill, they ought to be taught explicitly and systematically.

To start with, it is important to establish the main aim of teaching reading as there are several reasons why a learner can read. For instance, one can read in order to develop his/her knowledge of the language of instruction or for fun. An individual may also read for the purpose of gathering information or for confirming the authenticity of the knowledge at hand or even to critically assess someone’s thoughts or style of writing.

Establishing the intention of reading affects the most effective method of comprehension reading. For instance, in case a person is reading a particular poem for the purpose of gratification, he/she is only required to make out the words used by the poet and the manner in which they are presented and has no need to classify the subject of the poem.

On the other hand, in case an individual uses a scientific article with the aim of supporting a certain outlook, one requires to have been exposed to the terminologies being used. He/she should also comprehend the specific information as well as the cause-effect cycle of the information presented. This encompasses the main objective of teaching reading to learners in our learning institutions.

In the past, my main failure in teaching reading was mainly attributed to my presumption of the aim of learning how to read in a language, which I viewed as merely to get the content written in a given lingo. During that time, I mainly restricted teaching reading to literary texts that indicated a deep affiliation to culture.

However, this approach was wrong because it presupposed that students learn to read in a particular language only through learning its terminologies, words and sentence structures, but not by actually reading it, which ignores the aspect of communicative competence.

However, as a result of learning the importance of communicative approach and applying it in the teaching of reading, I have had a better perception of the role of reading as well as the types of texts to be applied in teaching reading in any given language, as a result of which I have succeeded in this endeavor.

When a teacher’s main objective of teaching reading encompasses communicative competence, diverse reading materials such as newspapers, comprehension text books as well as internet should be used. This is because exposing the learners to diverse reading materials develops their communicative competence tremendously. For this reason, we cannot separate instruction in reading from reading practice at any one time.

As an instructor of reading skills, I plan to lay out some comprehension strategies that my learners will employ in order to reap maximum benefits from any given texts in future. This way, the learners will learn to become dynamic and focused readers who can manage reading comprehension on their own.

The strategies include instruction on comprehension monitoring where I will teach the learners on how to be aware of what they understand and make out whatever they do not comprehend as well as employ suitable means of solving comprehension problems. In addition,

I will expose the learners to metacognition skills which will require them to have control over their reading and establish the purpose of reading prior to the reading process, while establishing the hurdles they encounter in understanding a particular comprehension. Furthermore, I will teach the learners on how to make use of semantic as well as graphic organizers for effective understanding.

These include diagrams as well as subject words that are crucial in understanding any comprehension. Other important aspects that I plan to teach include formulating and answering comprehension questions, elaborating the structure of the story as well as summarizing the main components of a given comprehension.

In conclusion, even though a teacher is crucial in instructing effective comprehension skills, the benefits can only be achieved through cooperative learning. Learners should work hand in hand with each other in order to comprehend texts. Besides, they should also employ the given strategies of comprehension reading. We as the instructors should assist the learners to work in groups and model the reading strategies to them.

So reading for educational purposes and reading for pleasure are not the same. The same thing will read different if it is read for these two purposes.

Reading for pleasure is traditionally defined as the reading done with a motive of getting pleasure, especially pleasure through imagination. But pleasure may also come from knowledge. Knowing something is an immense pleasure when what is known is useful or important. So, reading for pleasure refers to all types of reading done in order to enjoy either through imagination or through the acquisition of knowledge.

People do not seem to get bored by a book when they read it for pleasure. But it is true that they then pick up books different from what they would have to go through if they were to get the favour of their teacher or to pass exams. Generally it is seen that people mainly read books of stories, novels, and poems for this purpose.

But the choice is not limited to these theree genres of literature. Some people, especially those with sound educational or intelleclual backgrounds, read books on various subjectsincluding highly technical ones— just for pleasure. This type of pleasure is, however, established mainly on the thirst for knowledge.

Reading for pleasure is unquestionably a good habit. Over and above giving us pleasure, this habit gives us knowledge, insight, wisdom, control over mind, and other abstract higher human qualities. Best of all, it creates a boundless personal world in the mind of the reader.

The more the number of people in a country who get pleasure in reading, the more the probability that the nation will advance fast in every line. There are, for example, far more people who find pleasure in reading in the developed countries like the USA, the UK, France, and Germany, than there are in such developing countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Srilanka. This fact exemplifies at least one reason why those countries are developed and these are not. Therefore, our aim should be to interest ourselves in reading as much as possible.

One thing, however, should not be left unmentioned. We should build up a habit of reading everything with pleasure– even our textbooks. This will not only make the learning process easy and comfortable, but this will enable us to learn more than how much we normally think we can learn. In fact, reading for pleasure is closely related to reading with pleasure.

There are various means and sources of pleasure like traveling, angling, visiting important places, playing different of various games-both indoor and outdoor, gossiping with fellow men etc. But the pleasure found in reading is the best one.

Man’s desire: Man is by nature a pleasure seeker and with this end, in view, he cultivates reading as a hobby. Man after hard working and toiling wants to find repose and seeks amusement or enjoyment. Though bread and butter is a basic need for man’s survival on earth, reading is also necessary to satisfy his mental hunger to be healthy mentally.

Various sources of pleasure: Man finds many sources of pleasure but the pleasure available in reading is the best one. It provides him with a wide range of pleasure for there are stories, novels, dramas, plays, newspapers, magazines, fictions, biographies, travel books, history books and so on and so forth. Man finds enough room of every taste and liking. If one likes reading novels, there are detective novels, novels of adventures, novels based on pure fantasy, imagination, history, novels dealing with rural and urban life, complexities, human conduct science, and technology etc.

Reader’s conception: The reader knows that books of any kind are written by authentication masterminds, writers and authors. In their writings, they represent or depict the essence of human wisdom, experience, performance, and hard trying achievement. Books always contain thoughts, conception, ideas and imagination of the intellectuals. The true and the real reader can find an unenjoyed enjoyment in reading books of the best authors.

Various reading places: One can enjoy reading at any time at any place, at any moment without any hesitation. When we are alone, books may provide us with the best companionship. Books are always at our company and at our disposal. We can enjoy reading books in the train, in the bus, in the boat, in a solitary room, in the garden, at the street corner, in a library, at the time of sleeping (especially before sleeping at bedtime) etc.

Usefulness: A legend or a moral of an event tells, “Reading makes one a full and complete man providing correct idea and conception.” Bread and butter enable man to survive on earth by quenching or, satisfying hunger but it cannot give pleasure, idea, conception of the unknown, unseen and unimagined things. This is the pleasure that guides a man to read books. Books reflect human society holding on an apparent mirror.

They bring us in contact with great minds of both past and present. Books elevate us, purge us of our faults, instill in us noble and high thoughts and urge us to gain something nobler, higher, better and more sublime. The today’s friend may turn traitor and cheat (foto) to deceive us tomorrow while books remain even faithful, reliable and cannot do any harm to us. Books always remain unchanged come what may and what might be with the passage of time. Reading also provides us an unthinkable recreation which is not only healthy but also recreative.

Reading multiplies our pleasure and lessens boredom and sorrow. In the days of strain pain, stress blood pressure and heart problems there can be no better way of relaxation, entertainment, and refreshment than reading making us absorbed in a new word and keeping us tension-free.

Reading habit never allows a man to be alone, sad and companionless as the characters of novels, stories, poems, biographies are always there with him. Milton, the English poet, called books, “precious subjects life blood of master spirit.” Hence we can have a firm faith in God and books which will never deceive or leave us in danger and lurch.

Selection of books: Reading widens our mental horizon, broadens outlook, learning and sagacity. It makes us real human being, gentle, manly and knowledgeable. It refines language and expression, enriches vocabulary and imagination by giving wings tofly.

on Influence of bad books: Reading is pleasing, no denial but selection of good books of the best author is important or the crux of the question. There are both good and bad books. Bad books degrade and vitiate human minds causing immense harms. The cheap, obscene and immoral books should be kept at arms and length. Advice should be solicited from the learned, wise, elders, teachers and well-wishers in selecting books.

Conclusion: To conclude there are pleasures of reading only good books which can bestow upon us the best of benefits and pleasures. Human companionship may sometimes be unwanting and imitating. But books make no such demand on. It brings satisfaction to men of emotional temperament. Hence books are our never falling or leaving companions.

After completing my 12th, I prepared twice for IIT ( Indian Institute of Technology ) from Aakash institute, but unfortunately, I failed to get selected into the best IIT colleges. But during the preparation, I was being graduated from CSJMU Kanpur. I completed my graduation in 2016 and now I’m pursuing an educational degree ( B.Ed. ). 2. Profession – Although I love teaching, but I also do blogging. Both are my favorite jobs.
