Apple event 2023 recap: iPhone 15 price, colors announced; Apple Watch Series 9 unveiled
Apple unveiled its latest products, including the new iPhone 15 models and Series 9 Apple Watch , during its annual September event in Cupertino, California, on Tuesday.
The standard iPhone 15 will start at $799, while the larger 15 Plus starts at $899. The iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999, and the larger iPhone Pro Max starts at $1,199.
All four iPhone models will be available for preorder Sept. 15 and available in stores Sept. 22.
The Series 9 watch will also go on sale Sept. 22 and be priced at $399.
The keynote presentation, which was called "Wonderlust," was held on Apple’s campus at the Steve Jobs Theater. The event has become an annual staple on the tech calendar, dating back to the debut of the original iPhone in 2007.
Here's what was announced at Apple's 2023 event:
iPhone 15 price, features
Apple debuted the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max Tuesday.
The standard iPhone 15 will start at $799, while the 15 Plus will start at $899. The iPhone 15 will have a 6.1-inch display, and the 15 Plus will have a 6.7-inch display.
The phones will have Dynamic Island, a redesigned notch at the top of the screen that takes up less visual space. The feature was first added to the iPhone 14 Pro models last year as a tool to track ongoing activity, like directions or the music you're listening to.
The iPhone 15 base models will get the A16 chip used in the iPhone 14 Pro models.
What does the iPhone 15 look like?
Iphone 15 release date.

The new camera has the same resolution as the camera on the iPhone 14 Pro.
iPhone 15 colors
The iPhone 15 will debut in five colors – black, blue, pink, white and yellow.
iPhone 15 Pro price, features
The iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999, while the iPhone Pro Max starts at $1,199.
The iPhone 15 Pro will have titanium sides, which replaces the stainless steel used since the iPhone X. The iPhone 15 Pro models will also have the faster A17 chip that the company claims will improve the mobile gaming experience.
iPhone 15 Pro camera
The iPhone 15 Pro models will have three cameras, similar to previous models, and a 48-megapixel main camera sensor.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max camera will have several new and updated features, including 5X optical zoom.
iPhone 15 Pro colors
The iPhone 15 Pro models will come in black, dark blue, dark gray and light grey.
Apple Watch Series 9 price, 'double-tap'
Apple also announced the newest model for the Apple Watch: the Series 9.
The primary upgrade comes from a new processing chip, called the S9 SiP, which the company claims will be faster than the one introduced in 2020.
The Series 9 will look similar to previous models, but it will have updated colors including pink, starlight and silver.
The Series 9 will also have a new feature called "double tap." The feature allows users to answer a call or control any number of actions in an app by tapping their index finger and thumb together, twice.
The watch will go on sale Sept. 22 and be priced at $399.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 price
Similar to the Series 9, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will also have the "double tap” feature and have the S9 SiP processor.

Apple USB-C charger
Apple confirmed that its phones will move away from the company's Lightning charging system to a USB-C port . The changes will begin with the iPhone 15 line and AirPod charging case.
The change comes on the heels of regulations passed by the European Union to standardize the charging ports for electronic devices sold on the continent.

Apple events through the years
More than 30 million people watched Apple’s 2022 event on YouTube.
Apple unveiled the iPad in 2010 , the Apple Watch in 2014 and the AirPods in 2016 .
With more than 1.2 billion iPhones sold, Apple has “become a core part of people's lives around the world," Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives told USA TODAY.
Apple generated more than $394 billion in net sales last year, and since its January 2007 unveiling of the first iPhone, the company's share price has risen more than 5,000%.

We've also got Adrienne So's deep dive (get it?) on the Apple Watch Ultra , and how the sub-three-day battery life may make it tough for it to compete with the other premium outdoors smartwatches that currently dominate that market.
In Case You Missed It
Here's our roundup of everything Apple announced today —all the details on the new products, as well as the new features coming to existing products in software updates.

It looks like Apple is waiting until October to release iPadOS 16 and MacOS Ventura—further proof the company will hold another hardware event that same month to announce new iPads and Macs.
If your Deep Purple iPhone detects a crash while you are on a highway and then needs to search for a satellite to call for help, is that a Highway Star? Dammit why didn't I think of this joke during the show.
The arrival of iOS 16 will bring with it Apple's newly added support for passkeys. This is the latest salvo in the great war against passwords; your devices' biometric sensors will soon be all you need to log into websites, apps, and internet services. Here's our explainer on everything you need to know about passkeys .

Grant brings up a good point. We might see more about HomePod and/or HomeKit later this year. But also we might not. Watch this space.
Apple has officially confirmed, via its press releases, that iOS 16 and watchOS 9 will be available for download on September 12.
And that's a wrap on the presentation. (I almost typed “live event” by accident.) We'll be posting some more updates this afternoon as news trickles in from Apple about release dates for iOS and iPadOS, as well as more details about the products that were announced today.
All the iPhones.

The iPhone 14 Pro is $999 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is $1,099. Preorders start Friday and they go on sale September 16.
You can also buy the iPhone 11 for $429, iPhone 12 for $599, iPhone 13 for $699. The iPhone Mini is truly gone from Apple's lineup, I think.
Don't die out there.
Adrienne So
Julian, no, it's just for Burning Man.
So basically, to test these iPhones, I have to get into a crash, then get stranded in the middle of nowhere, and I can use the new 48-MP camera to cinematically film my daring, action-y escape.
It's three cameras but there's technically a new “2x” zoom that delivers high-quality 12-megapixel photos with the primary 48-megapixel camera. So, as Apple says, four zoom levels!
Stats, Specs. Maybe I'm a Leo, but I love the Deep Purple color.
Apple has noted the environmental impact of buying a new iPhone so many times that I feel obligated to point out that you can actually buy jewelry made from the precious metals in old phones! When my iPhone 11 finally ties, I want a dog tag made from its remains.
Not going to lie, I love the smooth animations of the Dynamic Island. Still not sold on the name though.
I suddenly…. want…the iPhone 14 Pro……

Apple Spring event: Date, time, new product rumors for Let Loose event
We’d given up hope for a spring event this year, but Apple surprised us by issuing invites to an event on May 7, 2024. So it turns out that big things are brewing at Apple Park after all, and we will find out what they are very soon.
In this article, we explain what you need to know about Apple’s May event, how to watch it live, and what products you can expect to be unveiled.
Apple’s spring event is one of the three or four big events in Apple’s yearly cycle of announcements. We get the big software announcements at WWDC in the summer, the iPhone launch in September, sometimes we see Apple make Mac and iPad announcements in October or November, and (most years) we get some hardware reveals at a spring event in March or April. At these events Apple executives hit the stage–whether real or virtual–and boast about some recent successes, before revealing what new products are about to launch. For more detail on Apple’s calendar of events, read When is the next Apple event?
Apple has held lots of spring events over the years, but they don’t happen every year and there was no guarantee that Apple would hold a spring event in 2024. Once Apple had announced the dates for WWDC it was assumed there would be no Spring event, but it turns out there will be. Read on to find out more.
When the event starts you will be able to watch it right here:
Will there be a spring Apple event in 2024?
Apple has confirmed that it will hold an event on Tuesday May 7 at 7am PT.
We’ll discuss the products that might launch below.
When is Apple’s spring 2024 event?
- Tuesday May 7 at 7 am PT.
While the date is a lot later than previous ‘spring’ events, it’s quite typical for Apple to hold events (other than WWDC) on a Tuesday or sometimes a Wednesday.
Here are the dates of the past seven Apple spring events.
- 2023: No event
- 2022: Tuesday March 8
- 2021: Tuesday April 20
- 2020: No event
- 2019: Monday March 25
- 2018: Tuesday March 27
- 2017: No event
- 2016: Monday March 21
- 2015: Monday March 9
- 2014: No event
- 2013: No event
- 2012: Wednesday March 7
What time will Apple’s spring event start?
Apple’s events generally start at 10 a.m. in local (California) time, but this time the event starts at 7am PT.
Here’s how it would work out in various territories:
- U.K.: 3 pm (BST)
- Rest of Europe: 4 pm (CEST)
- U.S.: 7 am (PT), 8 am (MT), 9 am (CT), 10 am (ET)
- Canada: 7 am (PT), 8 am (MT), 9 am (CT), 10 am (ET)
- India: 7.30 pm (IST)
- Singapore and China: 11 pm
- Japan: next day at 2 am (JST)
- Australia: 11 pm (AWST), 11.30 pm (ACST), midnight (AEST)
- New Zealand: next day at 2 am (NZST)
Apple events generally last between one and two hours.
What is the spring event tagline and what does it mean?
The tagline is Let Loose, a phrase that suggests freedom, perhaps the idea that creativity will be let loose.
The image accompanying the invite is of an Apple Pencil drawing, so a new range of iPads and a new Apple Pencil are expected. Read more about the new products expected at the event below.
The date (7 May) and time (7 am) may also be relevant. If Apple updates the iPad Pro 12.9in and iPad mini they will both be 7th generation models.
What will Apple announce at the spring event?
We’ve seen Apple announce the M3 MacBook Air via a press release. So what could be next?
The iPads are overdue an update. They were the one product category that didn’t get a look in at all in 2023. Not a single Apple tablet was updated. So a new batch of iPads is expected including a new iPad mini and iPad Air (the latter of which could have a larger screen option). An 11th gen iPad and an update to the iPad Pro , also with a screen size adjustment, could also happen in the spring, although we may be waiting a little longer for them. There is also an expectation that a new Apple Pencil could soon launch.
Now the MacBook Pro, iMac and MacBook Air offer the M3 (and M3 Pro and M3 Max in the case of the MacBook Pro), but what of the Mac mini ? That Macs will surely be updated soon.
We could also see some updates to the Home products. There have been rumors of a faster version of the Apple TV, a HomePod with screen , or a product that combines the two products. Speaking of music, we could also see new AirPods – including a cheaper model. Read the AirPods rumors .
We could also get a date for the availability of the Vision Pro outside the U.S. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo the Vision Pro is likely to launch outside the U.S. before WWDC 2024 , which likely takes place in June. Speaking of which, we’ll probably be waiting until WWDC in June for the Mac Pro and Mac Studio update .
How to watch Apple’s spring event live
The best way to watch would be to get an invite to attend in person, but most of us won’t be so lucky. Fortunately, Apple will also live stream the presentation so everyone can watch along.
The first place to try is right at the top of this article where we have embedded Apple’s YouTube stream. You can also watch on Apple’s events page , which will have the live stream on the night. Indeed, the main Apple.com home page should have plenty of coverage while the presentation is happening.
If you’ve got an iPhone, an iPad, an Apple TV, or a Mac–assuming the device has sufficiently up-to-date software–you can watch the stream on the TV app. PC owners can also watch but will need to visit Apple’s site as mentioned above.
After the event is finished, it will also be available to rewatch in the Podcasts and TV apps, and on Apple’s website .
The company has occasionally experimented with streaming announcements on its Twitter page , although we don’t expect it to repeat the strategy this time.
Finally, Apple has for certain events in the past held broadcast events in Apple Stores, so it may be worth contacting your nearest outlet to see if they have anything planned.
What has Apple launched in past spring events?
Studying past behavior can help us predict what Apple will do in the future. Here’s what Apple has announced at previous spring events.
- 2023: no event
- 2022 (“Peek Performance,” virtual): New iPhone SE, new iPad Air, Mac Studio and Studio Display, and new iPhone color options
- 2021 (“Spring Loaded,” virtual): New iPad Pro and iMac, Apple TV 4K, AirTags, new iPhone color options and iOS 14.7
- 2020: no event
- 2019 (“It’s show time”): Apple Card, and the News+, TV+, and Arcade subscription services
- 2018 (“Let’s take a field trip”): New iPad and education announcements
- 2017: no event
- 2016 (“Let us loop you in”): iPad Pro, iPhone SE, and software updates
- 2015 (“Spring Forward”): Apple Watch, a new MacBook, and iOS 8.2
- 2014: no event
- 2013: no event
- 2012 (“We have something you really have to see. And touch”): 3rd-gen Apple TV and 3rd-gen iPad
What happens at an Apple event?
Like most tech-company launch events, it will feature both fluff and substance. Expect some tedious bragging at the beginning; this may cover such topics as operating system adoption rates, hardware customer reviews, and eco-friendly manufacturing policies. But Apple wouldn’t hold an event if there wasn’t something worth hearing, and we should get into proper announcements within 10 minutes or so.
Generally, you can expect multiple separate announcements at an Apple event.

If you want to present like Steve Jobs, make note of this list in the prezi below and follow these tips next time you get up on stage.
1. KEEP YOUR MAIN MESSAGE SIMPLE—AND TWEETABLE. (TWEET THIS!)
Apple sticks to sleek, simple design when it comes to its devices—and its presentations are no different. From the language to the visuals, everything in an Apple presentation is designed to convey one message at a time as clearly as possible. This dedication to clarity and simplicity ensures that Apple’s audiences come away from these presentations with the exact message that Apple wants to spread. Communications expert Carmine Gallo praises Apple executives for going so far as to make sure that their headlines are less than 140 characters long, so media outlets and audience members can tweet them out exactly as they said on stage. Take a look at Twitter after tomorrow’s announcement—you might just notice the same headlines, straight from Tim Cook’s mouth, making the rounds.
2. BRING YOUR DATA TO LIFE WITH VISUALS. (TWEET THIS!)
Steve Jobs understood the importance of powerful imagery. When he announced the launch of the MacBook Air on stage in 2008, Jobs wanted to highlight just how thin Apple’s newest laptop computer was. Instead, however, of simply telling his audience the impressive dimensions of the computer, he showed them, using an image of a manilla envelope .
“It’s so thin,” he said, “it even fits inside one of these envelopes we’ve seen floating around the office.” With this powerful image, Jobs was able to get his message across in a much more compelling way than he would have with numbers and text alone.
Visuals are scientifically proven to help your audience remember your message. Several studies have shown that when combined with images, text-based information is 42% more memorable .
3. PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED. (TWEET THIS!)
At the Macworld Conference in 2007, Steve Jobs’ clicker famously failed him. Instead of throwing the wretched piece of plastic on the ground or storming off the stage, Steve kept his cool. He made a joke to put the audience at ease, and then launched into a story about his adventures with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in high school.
https://youtu.be/_NNdOy0TJSk
In a matter of minutes—which can feel like hours when you’re up on stage with no backup—the clicker was working again, and Steve was able to continue with his talk. Steve seemed like a natural on stage, but in fact he was meticulous about his preparation—which included preparing anecdotes to tell when clickers stopped working.
4. PLAN FOR A “WOW” MOMENT. (TWEET THIS!)
Steve Jobs was famous for his audacious statements and bold choices, especially when it came to presenting. Jobs knew how to work an audience—and how to delight them with the unexpected. A great example of this kind of “wow” moment is from Jobs’ introduction of the iPhone in 2007.
“Today, we’re introducing three revolutionary products,” Steve began. “The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device.” He repeats these lines as the audience begins to cheer. “Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices. This is one device.” And the crowd went wild.
By baking a surprising “wow” moment into every presentation, you’ll be able to keep your audience engaged and enthused—because they’ll never know what to expect next.

How to watch Apple's May 2024 iPad launch event
Get ready for the May 7 Apple 'Let Loose' livestream
- How to watch Apple's Let Loose event
What to expect at the Apple May event
The next Apple event is taking place on May 7 , where we're expecting to see a new suite of iPads get revealed, with pre-orders sure to follow.
Titled 'Let Loose', Apple will be livestreaming the launch, which suggests it'll be a significant one, with the Cupertino crew having plenty to show off; we're not expecting much beyond new tablets, so be ready for new software demonstrations, though surprises definitely aren't out of the question.
The main image for the event features a hand twirling an Apple Pencil amid a colorful Apple logo, so we expect there to be a focus on using iPads for creativity, likely with a new and enhanced Pencil. And rumors suggest that the Apple Vision Pro will get Pencil support; if so, expect Apple to tout the creation of digital art with in a virtual and mixed reality environment.
So read on for details on how to watch May's Apple event , along with a quick overview on what to expect.
How to watch the Apple Let Loose livestream
Apple's May event will take place in the form of a livestream. It kicks off on May 7 at 7am PT / 10am ET / 3pm BST, and on May 8 at 12am AEST.
The easiest way to watch the livestream will be on YouTube , where Apple currently has a holding page (see below) where you can set a reminder to get notified of when the steam starts. But you can also watch the May Apple event on the company's website and on the Apple TV app.
We'll be reporting on all the action so do keep an eye on TechRadar if you can't' follow the livestream. And we're sure to have some interesting videos and insights over on the TechRadar TikTok .

In short: iPads. Going by the rumors so far, we expect Apple to launch an iPad Air 6 , which is tipped to potentially come with an OLED display, a new M-series chip – probably the M2 chip but with scope for the M3 chip at a push – and come in a new 12.9-inch option for people who want a bigger tablet without needing to splash the cash on a high-end iPad Pro.
Speaking of which, we're expecting to see new iPad Pro models. The iPad Pro 2024 modes are tipped to carry on with the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models, but are likely to drop the LCD and mini-LED displays of their respective predecessors for OLED panels ; these would likely promise better colors and contrast, a boon for digital artists and content creators. As 'pro' tablets we can expect the new iPad Pros to make use of the M3 chip, with the larger model potentially getting a more powerful M3 Pro slice of silicon.
There have been murmurs of a new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil . The former could have a more laptop-like design, potentially being made out of aluminum and featuring a larger trackpad. The new Pencil could have various sensitivity improvements, more gesture options, and better compatibility with third-party apps; moreover it could also work with the Vision Pro.
We also wouldn't be surprised if Apple touted more Vision Pro features and interconnectivity with the new iPads. And there's scope for the likes of a new iPad AIr getting a gaming focus given how the iPhone 15 Pro 's A17 Pro chip can run console-quality games and Apple Arcade keeps building out its library.
All in all, the May Apple event could be an interesting one. It's not likely to shake things up like an iPhone launch; we'll need to wait until September and the likely launch of the iPhone 16 range go that. But May 7 could still host a livestream that Apple fans won't want to miss.

Apple's 'Let Loose' Event: Could This Be a Big Year for iPads?
The event invite from Apple strongly suggests that new iPads are coming next week.
- Nearly 20 years writing about tech, and over a decade reviewing wearable tech, VR, and AR products and apps
It's been over a year since we've seen a new iPad model.
There hasn't been a new iPad since 2022, but Apple seems likely to change that next week. All signs point to the release of new iPad models in early May.
Apple CEO Tim Cook posted this GIF for the virtual event to X on Tuesday morning.
Last week, I received an email invite for a virtual Apple event, scheduled for May 7 at 7 a.m. PT (10 a.m. ET). The invite, which says "Let Loose," shows a drawing of a hand holding an Apple Pencil. Considering the iPad is the only device that uses the Pencil -- that doesn't leave much to the imagination.
Apple's been expected to release new OLED-screened iPad Pros with newly designed Pencils and Magic Keyboard cases. New iPad Airs are also expected, including a larger-screened 12.9-inch model. Apple's iPad Air lineup tends to be slightly redesigned versions of previous-model iPad Pros, so just look to the M2 iPad Pro lineup for a sense of what the next Airs could be. These would be the first new iPads since the iPad Pro M2 model arrived in late 2022.
Apple's virtual invite shows an Apple Pencil.
Budget iPads aren't expected to be on tap here: Both the entry-level iPad and iPad Mini may not get updated until sometime in the fall. In the meantime, Apple will likely push new creative uses for its higher-end iPads, and justify what could end up being a significantly higher price for the revamped OLED-screened models. The Pro modes are also expected to have M3 processors, and all the iPads should finally have front cameras centered on the landscape edge for better-framed video chats when docked with a keyboard, like the 10th-gen iPad has (and all MacBooks).
There are two open-ended questions I have: Will iPads and Pencils become more hooked-in to the Apple Vision Pro ? And will iPads become more of a Mac replacement than they currently are? The answer to both is probably no for now, but with Apple's software-focused WWDC conference only a month afterwards, it's an interesting time to release new pro hardware.

Apple ipad air (m1) drops to all-time lowest price—but hurry.
As you’ll doubtless know by now, it looks like Apple will reveal a new iPad Air on Tuesday, May 7, which will go on sale around Friday, May 17. But Best Buy has just launched a very tempting offer on the current model, and it’s at a lower price than it’s ever hit before.
Apple iPad Air 2022. Snap it up for an all-time low price now.
The price is a full $200 off Best Buy’s regular price of $599.99, that is, it’s a full one-third off, meaning the price is down to just $399.99. So, what’s the catch? Well, there isn’t one, but you need to note that this price is only for the Starlight finish. That’s not exactly a hardship—if you ask me, it’s the best-looking color in the range. This is for the model with 64GB storage, and wi-fi connectivity.
You need to move very fast: this offer is only available until the end of the day today, Monday, April 29. Strictly speaking, it runs out at 10 p.m. Pacific, so that’s just a few hours away.
If you want one of the other colors in the range: pink, purple, space gray or blue, then you have more time on your hands. All four are available at a reduced price that goes on longer than just tonight.
But the offer is not as keen: it’s $100 off, that is, $499.99.
So, should you rush to pick this up, or wait until next week for the new model to launch?

Well, the M1 processor on board is very fast indeed—this is the iPad Air I’ve been using for more than a year now and it’s great. It has Touch ID in the power button, which is arguably the most efficient biometric unlock on the tablet. Certainly, I find it at least as convenient as Face ID on the iPad Pro.
Of course, we don’t know what exciting benefits the next iPad Air might bring, though it looks like it will come in a larger size, with a 12.9-inch display as well as the current 10.9-inch version.
While the next model will undoubtedly be better, it’s hard to knock the performance, design and all-round usability of the current model. If you think the bigger screen of the next version is what you want, then waiting is the right tactic for you. But if you like the size, weight and looks of the current model, and Starlight appeals, then this is a great opportunity to snag a powerful tablet at a remarkable price.
