Call for Applications: CARTA PhD Fellowships 2025

The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) invites applications for its prestigious PhD Fellowships for the year 2025. CARTA is a collaborative initiative involving eight African universities, four African research institutes, and eight non-African partners. Our mission is to bolster the capacity of African institutions to conduct globally competitive research, with a particular focus on addressing health and development challenges in the region.

CARTA PhD Fellowship

As part of its innovations, CARTA offers a collaborative doctoral training program in public and population health. This program has been developed in response to the great challenges faced by Africa’s institutions of higher education in addressing the training and retention of the next generation of academics in the region. Specifically, CARTA seeks to fund candidates who will be future leaders in their institutions. That is, young, capable, and committed individuals who, in time, will ensure that their universities will be the institutions of choice for future generations of academics and university administrators wishing to make a positive impact on public and population health in Africa.

The multi-disciplinary CARTA PhD fellowship is open to staff members of participating institutions who are interested in conducting their PhD research on topics relevant to the broad fields of public and population health. We welcome applications from any discipline, such as public health, demography, anthropology, communication, and economics, among others, as long as the research question aims to contribute to public and population health issues in Africa. CARTA is committed to gender equity in access to the training programs and governance structure and implements a series of interventions to support the progress of women in academia (see CARTA’s gender position ). Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will attend CARTA’s innovative series of Joint Advanced Seminars (JASES) for cohorts of doctoral students admitted and registered in the participating African universities. Both the development and delivery of these courses are jointly led by regional and international experts. The seminars include didactic sessions, discussions, demonstrations, and practice labs. These activities collectively serve to:

  • Expose students to key theories and concepts, seminal readings, and research methods of disciplines relevant to public and population health;
  • Train students in critical research skills; and
  • Build and maintain a network of researchers for scientific collaborations, professional support, and mutually beneficial exchange of scientific resources.

JASes are offered once annually for four years to each cohort and build skills and conceptual depth from year to year. Each JAS runs for 3 to 4 weeks. Specific topics covered in each JAS include the following:

  • JAS-1 builds critical thinking, technical skills, and other core research competencies, and introduces  students to the essential concepts and seminal articles of the disciplines brought together under CARTA
  • JAS-2 focuses on data management and analysis. Fellows learn to use software packages for qualitative and quantitative data management and analyses. Practice sessions use real research data and current software packages for hands-on training
  • JAS-3 focuses on data presentation, the doctoral dissertation, and scientific writing and communication skills to facilitate results dissemination and policy engagement
  • JAS-4 addresses professional development including skills necessary to manage and teach large class sizes, raise and manage research funds, grant writing, and research management.

In 2025, the CARTA program plans to offer up to 15 PhD fellowships and two additional fellowships reserved for staff members of the Somali National University (SNU), Somalia, who will be mentored by one of the CARTA partners, Makerere University, Uganda. The fellowships, which are tenable at the CARTA African universities, include the following benefits:

  • The cost of the fellow’s participation in the advanced seminars;
  • A modest monthly stipend; moderate support for research activities;
  • A laptop loaded with relevant software;
  • Funds to attend one international conference; and
  • Support to participate in training programs of choice.

Note : The CARTA fellowships run for a maximum of four years. Fellowships will only cover tuition fees, medical insurance, and travel support for fellows registered at a partner institution different from their own.

Respective African partner institutions need to commit to continue paying fellows’ salaries (or equivalent) as faculty members and to modify their workloads for the fellows, to enable them to fully participate in CARTA-organized activities pertaining to their PhD program and also to concentrate on their PhD studies. The partner institutions will also need to commit to waive the fellows’ fees if they are registered at the institution where they are employed. Fellows are encouraged to seek supplemental funding to cover additional costs of their doctoral program.

In Kenya, our alumni hold key leadership positions in government, clinics, hospitals, schools, universities and other institutions. Nearly two-thirds of our recent graduates in Kenya work in the public sector. We admit students based on merit, not ability to pay. AKU heavily subsidises its academic programmes and provides scholarships to 9 out of 10 of its students in East Africa.

Our 13-storey University Centre in Nairobi is home to state-of-the-art research and learning facilities. We have added an array of new undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The University is an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, one of the world’s largest private development organizations. AKDN’s roots in Kenya date back a century, and its activities benefit millions of Kenyans every year.

Top 8 Best Scholarships in Kenya for University Students

August 20, 2020

Elvis Onsomu

Scholarships in Kenya have gone a long way in transforming the country in many ways especially through offering quality education to young people from poor backgrounds who then return and improve the lives of people in the society.

Indeed, many leaders and achievers are products of scholarships at some point in their academic past which is why most of these in turn launch scholarships or fund them to benefit others. Yet scholarships can be very elusive and only the best at research or those lucky enough to be around caring and able people can access these scholarships.

The internet is indispensable to anyone seeking funding for education and since you’ve stumbled upon this article, I’m gonna make the work much easier for you by listing some of the top scholarships in Kenya that are accessible to Kenyan undergraduate and postgraduate scholars.

MasterCard has tens of programs catering to different groups with the same underlying problem of financial deficiency. Besides funding students to complete their education in top academic institutions, the foundation also has initiatives of expanding financial access and creating job opportunities.

In Kenya, MasterCard has brought change to the society through the Scholars Program which allows students whose talent and promise exceed their financial resources to complete their education.

All these programs have impacted directly to millions of Kenyans since it was founded in2008 and have built for the bank a reputation beyond reproach.

The University program which was launched in 2011 targets close to 30 students annually who are selected from an intensive recruitment system and fully funded to complete their tertiary education. Meanwhile, the vocational internship program targeting pre-university students exposes them to real-life job situations and hands-on industry training.

Witsie awarded prestigious scholarship

25 March 2024 - Wits University

Geoffrey Mwendwa, a PhD candidate in Physics, secures one of the initial spots in the 100 PhDs for Africa Programme (EXAF).

EXAF, the Excellence in Africa Initiative , is a collaboration between EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland, and UM6P, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University  in Morocco. The 100 PHDs for Africa Programme aims to create conducive conditions for exceptional PhD research.

Geoffrey Mwendwa

Mwendwa, a physicist born in Kenya with expertise in multiferroic materials, stands as one of only two PhD candidates from South African universities. He will benefit from financial support, co-supervision by an EPFL professor, and participation in summer/winter schools organised by UM6P. ( Read an interview with Mwendwa . )

The objective of the 100 PHDs for Africa Programme is to foster an environment for the candidates to produce outstanding PhD research.

Mwendwa’s PhD research seeks to induce strong ferroic correlations in materials (multiferroics), potentially leading to the development of an innovative generation of devices characterised by high efficiency, low energy dissipation, and high storage density, among other advanced capabilities.

“Imagine a material that can lead to the creation of ultra-fast, high-energy-efficient, high memory storage density, and portable electronic/electrical devices. These high-end device capabilities are the hallmark characteristics of the next-generational technology. Our research seeks to induce such properties in multifunctional materials known as multiferroics by engineering strong ferroic correlations. Strong ferroic correlations are predicted to provide novel physical properties (such as spin and charge frustration, which can bring a paradigm shift in technologies like spintronics to replace electronic devices, 4-state memory storage to replace binary memory storage, magnetoelectric batteries to replace electric batteries, solid-state refrigeration to replace compression/expansion cooling cycle-based refrigerants, magnetoelectric photovoltaics to replace semiconductor solar cells, etc.).”

The Programme also aims to cultivate a new generation of talented young researchers in Africa and nurture excellence within the continent's academic sector.

“I feel incredibly honored to be among the first candidates to be accepted into the EPFL-UM6P EXAF 100 PhDs for Africa Programme. This is indeed a golden opportunity for me to exploit my potential in academics and research in fullness. I am confident that I will be able to make a significant contribution to the search for materials that can deliver for the next generational technology.”

Africa's growth has been accelerating in recent years, necessitating an increasing demand for highly educated researchers in science and technology across the continent. The substantial interest shown in the 100 PhDs Programme throughout Africa, with more than 850 applications received in the first selection phase, underscores this need.

Follow EPFL on LinkedIn to be informed of the next call for projects.

  • This work is sponsored by the 100 PhDs for Africa Programme under the UM6P – EPFL Excellence in Africa Initiative.

News & Media Center

Sfa biology students receive scholarships, awards at texas chapter - american fisheries society annual meeting.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Two graduate students from Stephen F. Austin State University's Department of Biology have been recognized for their exceptional contributions at the 2024 annual meeting of the Texas Chapter - American Fisheries Society.

Anastasia (Umstott) Simpson, a first-year graduate student advised by Dr. Carmen Montaña-Schalk, assistant professor of biology, was awarded the best oral presentation. Her groundbreaking research focuses on the examination of fish communities in East Texas rivers and streams.

By exploring environmental and seasonal scales, Simpson aims to unravel the factors influencing the distribution and organization of stream communities, particularly in the Neches River and Sabine River basins of East Texas. Her research outcomes are crucial for guiding both broad and local conservation efforts, ensuring the preservation of overall diversity in the region and informing conservation practices.

Chase Nimee, a second-year graduate student under the guidance of Montaña-Schalk, received the 2024 Outstanding Fisheries Worker of the Year Award. His research focuses on the smalleye and sharpnose shiners, two federally endangered fish species in the upper Brazos River. Using a multiscale approach, Nimee investigates the biotic and abiotic drivers influencing the distribution of these shiners and associated fish assemblages.

He was also honored with the Harry Tennison Scholarship by the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth, providing valuable support for his research on the endangered shiners.

“The students in my lab are known for being hard workers and enthusiastic, but the reality is that they all enjoy doing research, both in the field and lab settings,” said Montaña-Schalk. “I am very proud of every student I mentor. These students are my collaborators and friends and we, as a team, have accomplished so much.”

Shouts out!

We have so many champions across the university and the world, but this month we want to give special shouts out to the following GL heroes.

Margot Gildner and Mandy Schenkemeyer,  both academic advisors in Kinesiology who have worked with Global Learning to strategically enhance access to Global Learning for their students.

Lexi Anderson  (CSD/ESG) for her assistance with dramatically improving our Course Notification Form (CNF) process. This is especially important because it ensures that the courses posted for faculty-led programs have the correct attributes, therefore charging the correct fees, suppressing campus-based fees, and ensuring tuition-related revenue is sent to the correct college. Also, a shout out for  Megan Styborski  in Global Learning for constantly improving processes.

Erin Leverman  from our Vancouver campus will be doing a site visit with our partner, IES, in Vienna this summer where she will learn more about internships abroad! We learn of new opportunities for faculty and non-faculty to do site visits fairly often and many of these opportunities are highly subsidized by our third-party providers hosting them.

Laurie Heustis, Chanel Denman, Chioma Heim, Kelli Gardner-Schrand, Alma Rocha, and Rich Giles  are all academic advisors who have gone above and beyond to help promote and advise students regarding study abroad, even though it is not systemically added to the curriculum in their programs. Thank you!

Distinguished Scholarship Office with a special nod to April Seehafer and Angie Klimko  for their work supporting our growing number of Gilman Scholarship applications. This year, 45 applications have been submitted!

CEE’s Efthymia Kostopoulou Wins Yet Two More Scholarships from the Boston and Rhode Island Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS)

Kostopoulou

Ph.D. student Efthymia (Fay) Kostopoulou of the UMass Amherst Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department has received a $4,000 Ann Hershfang Graduate Scholarship from the Boston chapter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) and a $2,000 Jannet Walker-Ford Leadership Legacy Scholarship from the WTS Rhode Island chapter.

For the last three years in a row, Kostopoulou has also been selected for the $2,000 Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship, as presented by the Rhode Island WTS, and in 2022 she received the $4,000 Mary Jane O’Meara Member Graduate Scholarship from the Boston chapter of the WTS. In addition to those influential WTS scholarships, Kostopoulou also earned a NorthEast Passenger Transportation Association Scholarship in 2022.

According to the national website of the WTS, the Ann Hershfang Graduate Scholarship Fund and the Jannet Walker-Ford Leadership Legacy Fund were established “to honor the past, present, and future leaders of the WTS” by awarding annual scholarships to female graduate students pursuing a career in transportation. By supporting and empowering the next generation of female leaders, the funds aim to foster diversity, excellence, and progress in transportation-related fields.

Kostopoulou, whose advisor is CEE Associate Professor Eleni Christofa, is pursuing her Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from UMass Amherst. Kostopoulou’s research focuses on developing signal-control strategies that account for multiple-user types and performance measures to design an equitable and efficient traffic-management system.

Kostopoulou has also worked on a variety of research projects, including the development of accessibility and fare-equity metrics in communities with race and economic disparities. This research has been carried out in cooperation with the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority and funded by the Federal Transit Administration. In addition, she has worked on measuring accessibility to food services to improve public health and on investigating the effectiveness of bike boxes in Massachusetts. Both those projects were funded by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, where Kostopoulou also worked as a highway engineering intern during the summer of 2022.

In addition, Kostopoulou participated in the so-called “Glow Safely” project, a low-cost safety alternative that lights the path at night for vulnerable road users and has been recognized at UMass Amherst and national entrepreneurship competitions. By using motion-sensor technology and LED lights, Glow Safely enables drivers to spot bicyclists and pedestrians in crosswalks and bike lanes at night.

Kostopoulou has been a member of WTS since January of 2021, vice president of the UMass Amherst WTS Student Chapter for the academic year 2021-2022, and president of that chapter since September of 2022.

Before attending UMass Amherst, Kostopoulou earned her B.Sc. and M.Eng. in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. (March 2024)
