Thank You Letter for Teacher – English and Tagalog Samples

There are moments when we lose awareness of what impact our teachers had on us, as students. Since teachers are busy individuals who work in busy schools, it is understandable that occasionally they miss opportunities to pause and consider what impact they have on the students entrusted to their care.

To all of the teachers out there, thank you. Below is a compilation of “Thank-You” letter templates for students who believe their teacher, in some small manner, changed their lives.

Remember to thank your teachers on October 5, which is World Teachers’ Day as well as National Teachers’ Day, and in National Teachers’ Month, September 5–October 5.

English Thank You Letter to Teacher – Appreciation

My first impression of you was not good. I didn’t like the fact that you wouldn’t accept my work until it was at the very top of my abilities.

I remembered that you never lost your cool. You were patient with me at all times. Whenever I wanted to be heard, you were the one who always made the time to listen.

I see this period of my life as being important for my growth as a person. I learned discipline from you. You instilled dignity in me. You have taught me more than just the material you are teaching; you have shown me that I am capable of far more than I had previously believed. Instead of becoming a clown, I can succeed.

I am so grateful to you for being a part of who I am now and for teaching me what I know now.

Motivational quotes for educators

Filipino students write thank you letters to celebrate teachers.

Angie Quadra-Balibay

Filipino students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 are writing letters and sending them in the mail to celebrate and give thanks to their teachers.

The letter writing initiative is part of the campaign “Salamat Po! Nationwide Letter Writing Advocacy program” of the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) launched on World Teacher’s Day on October 5.

The PHLPost advocacy encourages students to recognize their teachers and other role models through the art of letter-writing. The campaign awards the best letters sent through the post office.

Students aged 10-15 years old are eligible to join the campaign’s raffle contest and on-the-spot letter-writing competitions for the right to represent the Philippines in an international letter writing tilt.

There are two (2) ways to win in the contest:

1. First, a student can write a letter by saying “Thank You” to their teacher’s through letter writing using the theme: “4A’s of Gratitude: Appreciation, Admiration, approval and attention”. The letters will be sent in a sealed envelope where the complete details of the sender and addressee are clearly written and visible. The thank you letters shall be mailed via the Post Office through Ordinary Mail Service.

The winners in the postal areas will qualify for the National on the Spot Universal Postal Union International Letter Writing Competition.

The winning entry will get PhP10,000 in cash and will represent the country in the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Letter Writing Competition in Berne, Switzerland to compete among entries from the 192 countries who are members of the UPU.

2. Second, upon mailing and sending of letters at the post office, a student will be given a raffle stub to be filled up and dropped in designated boxes located at post offices and shopping malls (SM and Robinson’s Postal Counter). Raffle Prizes will be given to the winners.

Entries shall be accepted until March 2020. For further inquiries please go to the Salamat Po Letter Writing Facebook Page.

1. Basic Greetings

In most schools in the Philippines, the only time you would actually hear Tagalog classroom greetings is during classes where Filipino is used as the main language, such as the Filipino subject, or sometimes, Social Studies.

English is the preferred means of communication in Filipino schools , especially private ones. However, in most public schools, students are encouraged to communicate in Filipino or use their dialect.

It’s also essential to learn how to address one’s teachers and classmates and not just what Filipino words to say when greeting them.

Female teachers are addressed either as Ginang (Ma’am/Mrs./Madam) or Binibini (Miss), while male teachers are addressed as Ginoo (Sir). There are no special titles used for addressing one’s fellow students, but showing respect and courtesy to one another is encouraged at all times.

Magkita ulit tayo bukas. (“See you tomorrow.”)

2. Common Instructions and Commands Used by Teachers

The Philippine educational system is largely influenced by the country’s colonial past. It has adopted the Spanish way of teaching, in particular. This is characterized by an authoritarian management style where the teacher has complete control of everything going on inside the classroom. This is no longer a common practice, although courtesy, politeness, and respect are values that are still highly encouraged among students and teachers alike . The following are some of the most basic Filipino phrases used by teachers when addressing their students:

Time to Begin

Common instructions, comprehension questions, classroom supervision.

Male Teacher Handing the Chalk to a Student Raising Her Hand

Pakisulat ang sagot sa pisara. (“Please write the answer on the board.”)

3. Phrases To Use When Asking for Clarifications

Asking for clarification is part of learning. It’s a great way for students to learn new information and better understand what has just been taught. Most teachers allow their students to ask questions regarding the lesson only after giving the lecture.

Some would take a break midway to give students the opportunity to process what they have heard and ask for clarifications. A few others don’t mind if their students raise a question in the middle of the lesson. Just remember to ask politely and use the expression po as much as possible when addressing the teacher.

4. Phrases To Use When Explaining Absences and Tardiness

As much as we all love learning and would never want to be late or absent, there are times when we can’t help but miss school. This is where the importance of knowing how to provide reasons for your absence or delay comes in.

Reasonable Excuses

Somewhat silly excuses.

There are valid excuses for being late or absent, and there are somewhat silly ones. But believe it or not, a lot of students still use them. You can’t fool teachers, though, especially the more experienced ones. Years of teaching have honed their intuition and will instantly know if you’re just making up your reasons for being tardy.

Hindi po nag-alarm yung orasan namin. (“Our alarm clock didn’t go off.”)

5. When Talking About Your Favorite Subjects

In the Philippines, most of the names of school subjects are in English. Most have Filipino translations, but they are only used in written communication and seldom in daily conversations. For instance, you won’t hear your classmate say Nagawa mo ba ang proyekto natin sa Sikolohiya? Instead, it’s Nagawa mo ba ang project natin sa Psychology? (“Were you able to work on our project in psychology?”).

However, it’s still important to learn the Filipino equivalent of the names of common school subjects since they are what you will use when writing formal or academic papers in Filipino. Here’s a list of these subjects and their equivalent in English:

List of Subjects

Talking about school subjects:, 6. when talking about common school supplies.

School supplies are often a subject of daily conversations, which is why it’s so important to learn this type of classroom vocabulary in Filipino. Below is a list of Tagalog words describing the names of writing and learning tools and their English translation.

And here are a few examples of how to talk about the objects in the list above:

Pwede daw gumamit ng kalkuleytor sabi ni titser. ( “Teacher said we can use a calculator.”)

#1 Best Guide On How To Write An Essay In Tagalog

How To Write An Essay In Tagalog

Curious to learn how to write an essay in Tagalog? Well, you’re in luck because that’s exactly what we’re going to be talking about in this handy blog post!

As you read on, you will not only learn Tagalog but also realize just how easy it is to write essays in Tagalog. After this, your Tagalog writing and overall communication skills should improve a lot!

How To Write An Essay In Tagalog

If you want to know how to write a good essay ( sanaysay in Filipino), definitely remember that less is more! By writing less, you’re conveying to your reader that you’re organized and an expert on what you’re talking about. To learn more helpful tips, make sure to keep reading!

1. Do Your Research

Doing proper research ( pananaliksik ) before getting started is essential when it comes to the writing process. After all, how will you be able to write about a topic if you don’t know anything about it? When you’re conducting research, make sure to also fact-check and gather data from multiple sources. That way, your article has more authority.

Doing more research will also ensure that you know about a certain topic in-depth and can even lead to you gaining a new perspective along the way.

2. Draft Your Essay

After completing your research and answering the questions you have in your mind, you can now proceed to drafting ( pagbabalangkas ) your essay . This process is so important because it gives you time to organize your thoughts and ideas into a concise structure. If you skip this step, your essay is sure to come out disorganized, with different topics all jumbled up in each other.

Make sure that during this step, you outline your essay thoroughly. This will make the process of writing the actual essay go much smoother because you won’t have to go back and research information or search for notes. Keep all your notes in the same place when you’re writing an essay!

3. Start Writing

After conducting research ( pananaliksik ) and drafting your essay ( pagbabalangkas ), it’s time to start writing! Remember that when you write an essay, you should divide it into three parts: introduction, body, and conclusion.

The Introduction Of The Essay

The introduction ( panimula ) is where you will answer basic questions and tell your readers what the essay is going to be about. Make sure that you hook your readers in your introduction. Otherwise, they won’t keep reading.

The Body Of The Essay

Next is the body ( katawan ) of the essay. This is where you’ll talk in-depth about the topic. Make sure to include any research you did in this section and your analysis of the research. You can also include your opinion in this section if the topic permits.

The Conclusion Of The Essay

The last part of an essay is known as the conclusion ( konklusyon or wakas ) . This is where you can wrap up any major ideas in your essay. If you’re really good, you should be able to tie your conclusion somehow back to the introduction! It’s important to keep your conclusion insightful and avoid completely summarizing the essay. Readers want to feel enlightened after they finish reading an essay, not be given an entire synopsis!

4. Edit Your Work

Your essay isn’t finished until you’ve gone back and edited it. If time permits, we recommend sleeping on your essay and then coming back to it the following day.

Looking at an essay with a fresh set of eyes will allow you to notice errors that you might have missed if you had edited it on the same day you wrote it. The two main things to check for when it comes to editing are overall clarity and grammatical mistakes. Both of these can distract your reader from the actual content of the essay if you’re not careful.

Common Pitfalls In Writing Essays In Tagalog

While learning how to write an essay in Tagalog , it’s just as important to know what to avoid as it is to know what to do. Here are some common pitfalls you should watch out for:

  • Overuse of Direct Translations : One of the most common mistakes is directly translating phrases or idioms from English to Tagalog. This can lead to awkward phrasing or even change the meaning entirely. As we know, languages have their unique expressions, so try to think in Tagalog rather than translating from English.
  • Ignoring Formal and Informal Tones : Tagalog, like many languages, has formal and informal tones. Be mindful of the tone you’re using in your essay. Academic and formal essays usually require a more formal tone, so avoid using colloquial or Tagalog slang terms .
  • Neglecting the Flow of Sentences : The flow and structure of sentences in Tagalog can be quite different from English. Pay attention to sentence construction to ensure your essay reads naturally. Long, convoluted sentences can confuse readers, so aim for clarity and conciseness.
  • Inconsistent Use of Tenses : Tagalog verbs can be tricky, especially with their various aspects (completed, ongoing, and contemplated). Make sure to keep your verb tenses consistent throughout your essay to maintain clarity and coherence.
  • Overlooking Local Context and Nuances : Tagalog has rich local contexts and nuances. Make sure to incorporate these appropriately in your writing. Understanding and using regional expressions or phrases can add authenticity to your essay, but be careful not to misuse them.
  • Insufficient Proofreading : Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of proofreading. Spelling and grammatical errors can significantly undermine the credibility of your essay. If possible, have a native speaker review your work to catch errors you might have missed.

By avoiding these common pitfalls, your journey to mastering essay writing in Tagalog will be smoother and more successful. Keep practicing, and don’t hesitate to seek feedback from native speakers or language-learning communities! Good luck on your Tagalog essay writing journey!

Very Short (50 Words) Essay on My Favorite Teacher

100 Words Essay on My Favorite Teacher

200 Words Essay on My Favorite Teacher

Filipino teachers and the passion that makes learning continuity possible

  • BusinessMirror
  • July 28, 2020
  • 4 minute read

The new normal may have limited physical interaction, but in no way did it hinder the unyielding commitment and drive of those at the frontlines of education – Filipino teachers. Even if the academic community is facing numerous challenges in preparation for school year 2020-2021, countless Filipino teachers remain passionate about providing quality basic education to their students.

Putting Students First

Cagayan National High School Master Teacher Enrique Garcia remains committed to learning continuity during the pandemic.

Like many others, Mr. Garcia received training through webinars for distance learning. This prepares him and many others for the potential challenges that might come during the school year. “Last April, when we were still under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), I took the initiative to come up with self-paced modules. I thought of coming up with modules because this is one way I could help my students for the coming school year,” said Garcia.

According to Mr. Garcia, he spends his time collaborating with school leaders and his fellow teachers to create efficient class programs that will help the school adapt to the new normal. He also often meets with his colleagues virtually to discuss appropriate and effective learning delivery modalities for the upcoming school year.

Mr. Garcia goes the extra mile by putting his students first and considering what learning delivery modality is apt for each of them. “I have to consider those who have the resources and those who have limited resources. After all, I cannot utilize a one-size-fits-all scheme. I deeply understand that my students are as diverse as the dreams their hearts have known.”  Teachers like Mr. Garcia exemplify DepEd’s resolve by remaining committed to delivering education amidst the pandemic.

Pride of the Panay Bukidnon Tribe

Argy Catolin, a teacher at Aglonok Primary School Iloilo, is a modern-day hero during these unprecedented times. Mr. Catolin is a proud member of the Panay Bukidnon Tribe, which inspired him to teach as a way to make education accessible to his kin.

Even before the pandemic, Mr. Catolin has been going above and beyond to teach the students in Barangay Cahigon, Calinog, Iloilo. Due to the geographical conditions, students and teachers alike need to take a 2-hour motorcycle ride and a 3-hour walk to reach Aglonok Primary School. Nevertheless, these challenges didn’t stop Mr. Catolin. “Teaching is about inspiring others,” Mr. Catolin reiterates. He is fueled by his passion to touch the lives of his students and influence their future.

With the on-going pandemic, Mr. Catolin admits that students and teachers will face more difficulties in learning. The lack of electricity and reception in their area poses challenges in the upcoming school year. Recognizing the limitations of their area, his school has opted to utilize modular distance learning.

Mr. Catolin’s firstgeneral assembly with parents and learners last school year 2019-2020

Despite the challenges they may face, teachers and parents at the Aglonok Primary School work together to make sure that students can adapt to the new normal in education. “In our case in upland areas, we always give our best in helping our pupils. We did it before the pandemic through the Adopt-a-Child Program,” Mr. Catolin shared. “In the new normal, we can help our students by providing learning materials and we can help our parents by providing accurate information regarding the new normal setting.”

“This pandemic affects everything all over the world.” Mr. Catolin said. “Until there’s no vaccine we have to deal with the new normal setting. Us teachers have to be equipped with a positive attitude towards this crisis.” Mr. Catolin also shared that it is only through the collective efforts of teachers, students, parents, and the Department of Education (DepEd) that they can make a difference during these difficult times.

Mr. Catolin and Mr. Garcia are only two of the countless teachers who have their students’ best interests at heart and are working tirelessly to ensure that they still receive quality education.

Both teachers insisted that learning must continue, even during this pandemic. Mr. Catolin believes that quality education can help reduce poverty, promote peace, and foster development in the community, which is why he is in favor of opening classes this year. “As a teacher, we have to be equipped with a positive attitude towards this crisis. Together, we can make a difference,” he said.

Likewise, Mr. Garcia supports the various learning continuity initiatives in place for the incoming school year. “Education must continue. It is through it that we develop informed, critical, creative, adaptive, flexible, strong-spirited, culturally-clipped, morally-upright, and happy citizenry.”

The resilience, passion, and commitment of these teachers during these trying times have become a source of inspiration for others. As the teachers prepare for SY 2020-2021, the Department of Education (DepEd) is keen in providing support for these modern-day heroes. This is in line with the Department’s unwavering commitment to work with Filipino teachers to deliver quality education despite the circumstances. The collective efforts of the academic community, as well as the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan, are what will ultimately make the incoming school year a success.

Why Teachers Deserve a Special Valentine Message

Think about it. Teachers are the architects of future generations, guiding us through the complexities of education with patience, wisdom, and unwavering commitment. Recognizing their efforts on Valentine’s Day goes beyond mere tradition—it’s a testament to their invaluable contribution to our growth. A well-thought-out message can do wonders for their morale, reminding them that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

Crafting Your Valentine Message for Teachers

You might wonder, “How do I write a Valentine’s Day message that’s professional yet heartfelt?” The key is sincerity. Your message should reflect genuine appreciation for their dedication. While we’re steering clear of crafting the messages for you, we encourage embracing both English and Tagalog to add a personal and cultural touch to your wishes.

Q1. How do I write a letter to my teacher for Valentine’s Day?

To write a Valentine’s Day letter to your teacher, start with a polite greeting, express your gratitude for their teaching and support, and wish them a happy Valentine’s Day, keeping your tone respectful and warm. To personalize the message, think about moments or lessons that stood out to you. Mentioning these can make your message more personal and meaningful.

Q2. What should I write in a Valentine’s card for a teacher?

In a Valentine’s card for a teacher, write a message of appreciation for their hard work and dedication, and how they’ve positively impacted your learning experience, adding a wish for a joyful Valentine’s Day.

Q3. Can humor be part of a Valentine message to a teacher?

Absolutely, as long as it’s respectful and appropriate. A light-hearted line can add a unique touch to your message.

Q4. What do you write in a school Valentine’s card?

In a school Valentine’s card, include a friendly greeting, a short message expressing good wishes or thanks to classmates or teachers, and sign off with your name, keeping the message kind and inclusive.

Q5. What if I’m not good with words?

Sincerity is more important than eloquence. Expressing genuine gratitude will always resonate.

Wrapping Up

In the grand scheme of things, a message might seem like a small gesture, but its impact can be profound. This Valentine’s Day, let’s acknowledge the teachers who’ve dedicated themselves to our education and development. Your words have the power to uplift and inspire—use them to make a difference in the lives of those who work tirelessly to shape our futures.

Whether through eloquent English messages or touching Tagalog words, accompanied by a tasteful pick-up line or two, the essence of your message should be clear: gratitude, respect, and recognition. Teachers shape our futures; let’s brighten their day with a gesture that reflects the light they bring into our lives.

25 Basic Tagalog Phrases and Greetings

message for teacher essay tagalog

Who needs Tagalog?! Filipinos pretty much all speak English, right?!

Well, yeah, more or less. But when you’re visiting a country as social and fun as the Philippines, knowing some Tagalog will not only endear you to the locals, but inspire almost inexplicable positivity everywhere you go.

Here are some of the most basic Tagalog phrases and greetings to get you started!

Tagalog for Hello

The first word that most students of Tagalog learn is the word for “ Hello “: Kumusta . This is considered the more “proper” spelling, though you will probably also see it spelled Kamusta .

If you know a little Spanish then that word may seem familiar to you! That’s because it comes from the Spanish sentence ¿Cómo está? which means “How are you?”

So, does “Kumusta” literally mean “Hello”? No, it’s actually a question like “How are you?” But just like in the English greeting “What’s up?” it’s not necessarily a genuine inquiry into the other person’s well-being, but just a greeting.

Filipino (Tagalog) greetings

Tagalog for How are you?

You will also hear Kumusta ka? meaning “ How are you? “. Ka is a personal pronoun meaning “you” (in the singular). When you want to greet someone with an actual question , this is the usual way.

If you are speaking to more than one person, the plural form is Kumusta kayo?

“Kayo” is also used as a personal pronoun for older people or people with status in order to show respect (like vous in French). In such cases, you would normally include “po” – a particle which shows respect.  Kumusta po kayo?

Tagalog for Good morning

Filipinos often greet each other according to the time of day. These greetings begin with Magandang. Maganda means “beautiful” or “wonderful”, and ng connects it to the following noun.

Good morning: Magadang umaga .  Umaga  means “morning”. Sa umaga (“in the morning”), ngayong umaga (“this morning”), etc.  So magandang umaga  is like saying “beautiful morning”.

Tagalog for Good day and Good afternoon

If you are greeting someone around noon, then you say Magandang tanghali .  Tanghali  means “noon”. Good day! Literally “ Good noon “ .

If you are greeting someone later in the afternoon, you say Magandang hapon . Hapon means “afternoon “. Good afternoon!

If you want to say “ Good day “ without specifying (or if you just want to remember a single phrase!) you can say Magandang araw . Araw means “day”, as you may have guessed.

And in the evening you can wish someone Magandang gabi . Good evening!

Tagalog for Thank you

The Tagalog word for thank you is Salamat . “Thank you very much” is Maraming salamat .  If that word sounds like Arabic to you, you’re right! It derives from the Arabic word   سَلَامَة ‎   salāma meaning “ good health ”, or   سَلَامَات ‎  salāmāt , the plural form of سَلَام ‎  salām – the word meaning “peace” which I’m sure you know. How did an Arabic word get into Tagalog? Via Malay. Malay contains many Arabic loan words because of the spread of Islam to the Nusantara region.

To respond to salamat,  you can say Walang anuman , meaning “ You’re welcome “.  Wala means something like “There is none” and anuman means “anything”. So it’s like saying “It’s nothing”.

How do you say "Thank you" in Tagalog?

Tagalog for I love you

How did this phrase make it onto this list of very important phrases?! Well, let’s of people learn Tagalog in order to better understand their special someone who lives in the Philippines or is originally from there. And what better way to express your feelings to someone than by telling them in their native language?

“I love you” in Tagalog is Mahal kita . Mahal means “love”.  Kita  is a personal pronoun meaning “from me to you”. So this is like saying “Love from me to you”. Mahal also functions as an adjective meaning “dear”, “precious”, or even “expensive”. So it’s also a very useful word when shopping and trying to get a discount!

Mahal Kita - I love you in Tagalog

Some other basic Tagalog phrases

This is obviously not an exhaustive list of all the Tagalog phrases you will ever need, but here are a few most basics to get you started!

“ Excuse me” – People often say this in English, especially nowadays with the spread of Taglish (Tagalog + English). Or they might mix Tagalog and English, like Excuse me po , Excuse po , or just Excuse .    These expressions can be used either to get someone’s attention or to ask them to move.  A more strictly Tagalog way to ask someone to move is Padaan (po) .

“ Sorry” –  The most common word for “sorry” in Tagalog is Pasensya or Pasensya na . The word pasensya derives from the Spanish word paciencia meaning “patience”.

“Where’s the ______?” – You ask where something is in Tagalog by asking Nasaan ang _______?   “Where’s the restroom?” Nasaan ang banyo?   Yes, banyo is another word of Spanish origin.

“I understand” –  Naiintindihan ko . Naiintindihan  means “understand” and ko means I.

“I don’t understand” – Hindi ko naiintindihan . Hindi means “no” or “not”. Which brings us to:

“ Yes ” – Oo .  This word is pronounced as two syllables, with a glottal stop between the two O sounds, kind of like “Uh-oh” in English, except that it’s “Oh-oh”. The polite version of this word is Opo .

“ No ” – Hindi .   This word is used as the standalone word “no”, and also to negate other words. Its stress falls on the second syllable.

Welcome to the beginning of your journey into Tagalog, or Filipino as its standardized form is called.
