Reese Witherspoon Had the Best Reaction to a Fan Who Gave Her a 15,000-Word Legally Blonde Dissertation

I n the ultimate fangirl move, during a press call, a plucky reporter gave Reese Witherspoon a copy of her college dissertation — a 15,000 word meditation on Witherspoon’s wildly popular film, Legally Blonde and its role in creating strong female characters.

Lucy Jayne Ford, a reporter for Bauer Media in London, was at a press junket to interview Witherspoon and her Wrinkle in Time co-stars Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling, but couldn’t resist the opportunity to show her admiration for Witherspoon.

“I want to start by saying I’m obviously a gigantic fan of all of you; Reese, I actually wrote 15,000 words on you once,” Ford said before handing Reese a copy of her lengthy dissertation and explaining that she had watched the film 800 times to write it.

“You can read it, you can burn it, you can clean your windows with it, but I feel like this was full circle for me that I wrote that four years ago.”

While Ford conducted her interview after giving Witherspoon the dissertation, Witherspoon made sure to ask her one burning question that Elle Woods most definitely would have approved of before their time ended.

“I have just one question,” Witherspoon said. “Is it scented?”

“I actually put perfume on it before this,” Ford confided.

Reese Witherspoon Reacts to Journalist's 'Legally Blonde' Dissertation

You know what they say: don't meet your heroes. Why? Because there's a chance they might disappoint you. That was absolutely not the case when a British journalist named Lucy Ford met Reese Witherspoon during a press junket for A Wrinkle In Time . While studying journalism in college - or university as they say across the pond - Ford wrote a 15,000 word dissertation on Legally Blonde   titled "Dumb Blonde Ambition: Legally Blonde , Post-feminism, and the Reimagination of the 'Strong Female Character.'" When she found out she'd be interviewing the subject of her dissertation, Ford decided to show Witherspoon her work. The actress behind Elle Woods had the sweetest reaction. 

"Reese, I actually wrote 15,000 words on you once," Ford said as she kicked off her interview with Witherspoon and her Wrinkle co-stars Mindy Kaling and Oprah Winfrey. Ford then proceeded to hand Witherspoon a copy of her paper, which impressed all three interviewees. You know you've done something awesome when Oprah is impressed. 

Clearly moved by the gesture, Witherspoon thanked Ford and revealed "that really touches my heart. That means a lot to me." Never one to miss anything, Witherspoon noticed that the dissertation was scented . This might seem odd to anybody unfamiliar with Legally Blonde , but it's a touching ode to Witherspoon's character.

The moving interview clip went viral after Ford tweeted about her interaction with Witherspoon. It wasn't only Ford's earnest delight in meeting and presenting Witherspoon with her work that resonated with people. Witherspoon's genuinely kind reaction to the paper moved fans, as well. It shows how down-to-Earth the A lister really is. Many people took to Twitter to share how much they loved the sweet interaction between Ford and Witherspoon.

What makes this interaction even lovelier is Ford's well documented passion for Legally Blonde . This wasn't just some stunt she pulled in an interview - she really is devoted to the film and has never shied away from talking about it. She wrote a piece for Buzzfeed titled "The Definitive Ranking Of Every Outfit Worn By Elle Woods In Legally Blonde " and even chatted up Harry Styles about the film. Ford showed up to her interview with Styles rocking a Legally Blonde sweatshirt, which Styles instantly pointed out. He even called it the second best movie of all time - only after Dunkirk , of course.

Ford's sweet moment with Witherspoon is proof that dreams really do come true. She also got to hang out with Harry Styles, so, I'm officially jealous.

A woman showed Reese Witherspoon the dissertation she wrote about her and it was the sweetest thing

They say you should never meet your heroes, but an encounter between a journalist and Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon that’s gone viral has dispelled that myth once and for all.

Entertainment reporter Lucy Ford was interviewing Reese, Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling for their new film A Wrinkle In Time when she decided to go a little off-piste.

Lucy showed Reese the 15,000-word university dissertation she had written about her four years ago, in which she analysed strong female characters in the 2001 film Legally Blonde . Reese, of course, starred in the movie as sorority girl-turned-lawyer Elle Woods.

Upon being shown the essay, Reese was visibly moved and enthused: “Thank you, that really touches my heart.”

She went on to tell the reporter the essay was “amazing”.

“That means a lot to me,” the star added.

After the interview had proceeded as normal, Reese brought the subject back to the dissertation.

“I have one question about this… is it scented?” she asked.

And of course, it was.

"I'd been wanting to interview Reese for a long time and finally the opportunity came up. I floated the idea of showing my dissertation to her in my production meeting as a joke. But my editor thought it would be a nice thing to do.

"I honestly thought that I would be the only one who would care, but watching back her reaction and seeing the attention from elsewhere has been incredibly touching,” she added.

So there you have it – it’s ok to meet your hero, especially when they’re Reese Witherspoon.

Oscar winner is shocked when she is handed the special assignment inspired by her pivotal 2001 role.

This moment was one for the Harvard Law books. 

As fans of  Reese Witherspoon well know, the Oscar winner famously played ambitious sorority girl-turned-Harvard Law School valedictorian Elle Woods back in 2001's Legally Blonde , inspiring countless girls to pursue their dreams no matter the doubt and boundaries in their paths. Fast forward nearly two decades later, Witherspoon is gearing up to debut her latest silver screen performance as Mrs. Whatsit in A Wrinkle in Time .

As such, she's been joining co-stars Mindy Kaling and  Oprah Winfrey for interviews with the press, this week in London. During one interview, the trio of women met with reporter Lucy Jayne Ford , who kicked off her sit-down with a very special gift for Witherspoon. 

"I actually wrote 15,000 words on you once. I wrote my university dissertation on  Legally Blonde  and strong female characters," she told the star, who was visibly shocked and in awe. 

"Thank you! That really touches my heart," the actress sweetly told her, with an added "Wow" from Kaling and Winfrey. "That's amazing. Thank you. That means a lot to me," Witherspoon reiterated.

Before the interview ended, Witherspoon wanted to point out one small—but very important—detail. "I have one question about this—is it scented?" she asked, referencing Woods' famously scented résumés on pink paper.  

"I actually put perfume on it before I left," Ford admitted with a laugh. "I know you did!" Witherspoon quipped. 

Ford chronicled the entire sequence of events on social media, including this additional detail: "Not captured on camera: Oprah thoughtfully flicking through it and reading the section where I reference her book."

Sometimes dreams do come true, and here’s the proof –  writer Lucy Jayne Ford   wrote a 15,000-word dissertation all about   Legally Blonde   while she was in college, and yesterday she got to give Reese Witherspoon a copy in person. And yes, this is real life.

Ford was about to interview Witherspoon, Oprah, and Mindy Kaling (as one does) about their new movie   A Wrinkle in Time . But Ford couldn’t pass up an opportunity to tell the real Elle Woods all about that time she wrote thousands of words about the female characters in   Legally Blonde . Needless to say, Witherspoon’s reaction was priceless:

Accepting the gift, Witherspoon looked visibly moved, and even asked, “Is it scented?” Calling it a “love letter,” Ford told Witherspoon, “You can read it, you can burn it, you can clean your windows with it.”

And even Oprah said, “Wow,” so it seems as though the gesture went down pretty well.

Hopefully, Witherspoon’s excitement about the   Legally Blonde   dissertation will reignite talks about a third sequel. In January 2017,   Witherspoon told E!   at the Women in Television dinner at Chateau Marmont that she was ready to consider a third movie about Elle Woods. She said, “I do think it’s a good time to do it. I think women need that kind of positivity right now.” And she’s definitely right.

Above all, this sweet dissertation gesture should provide hope to all pop culture super fans who dream that one day they’ll get to meet their idols, too.

"I actually wrote 15,000 words on you once," Lucy shared with Reese. "You can read it, you can burn it, you can clean your windows with it," she joked while Reese gave the most pure angelic reaction, because of course she would. While the pages weren't pink, Reese did have one question for Lucy: "Is it scented?" And in true Elle Woods fashion, Lucy had sprayed the pages with perfume beforehand.
