Ithaca College Requirements for Admission

Choose your test.

What are Ithaca College's admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

  • GPA requirements
  • Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements
  • Application requirements

In this guide we'll cover what you need to get into Ithaca College and build a strong application.

School location: Ithaca, NY

This school is also known as: IC

Admissions Rate: 75.2%

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at Ithaca College is 75.2% . For every 100 applicants, 75 are admitted.

image description

This means the school is lightly selective . The school will have their expected requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores. If you meet their requirements, you're almost certain to get an offer of admission. But if you don't meet Ithaca College's requirements, you'll be one of the unlucky few people who gets rejected.

Ithaca College GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.71

The average GPA at Ithaca College is 3.71 .

image description

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA. This school did not officially report its average GPA, but we've estimated it here using data from over 1,000 schools.)

With a GPA of 3.71, Ithaca College requires you to be above average in your high school class. You'll need at least a mix of A's and B's, with more A's than B's. You can compensate for a lower GPA with harder classes, like AP or IB classes. This will show that you're able to handle more difficult academics than the average high school student.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.71, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate . This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

Ithaca College hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Ithaca College will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

Ithaca College SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1287

The average SAT score composite at Ithaca College is a 1287 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes Ithaca College Competitive for SAT test scores.

image description

Ithaca College SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1213, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1360. In other words, a 1213 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1360 will move you up to above average .

Here's the breakdown of SAT scores by section:

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

Ithaca College has the Score Choice policy of "Highest Section."

This is also known as "superscoring." This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit .

Click below to learn more about how superscoring critically affects your test strategy.

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, Ithaca College will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Ithaca College forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1213, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

Ithaca College ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, Ithaca College likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 29

The average ACT score at Ithaca College is 29. This score makes Ithaca College Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

image description

The 25th percentile ACT score is 28, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 32.

Even though Ithaca College likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 28 or below, you'll have a harder time getting in, unless you have something else impressive in your application.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 28 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

However, from our research, Ithaca College is understood to superscore the ACT . We couldn't confirm it directly from the school's admissions website, but multiple sources confirm that the school does superscore the ACT. We recommend you call their admissions office directly for more information.

Superscoring is powerful to your testing strategy, and you need to make sure you plan your testing accordingly. Of all the scores that Ithaca College receives, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all ACT test dates you submit .

For example, say you submit the following 4 test scores:

Even though the highest ACT composite you scored on any one test date was 20, Ithaca College will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 20 to 32 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Ithaca College forms your Superscore, you can take the ACT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your ACT score is currently below a 28, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the ACT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the ACT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

Ithaca College considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is lightly selective, you have a great shot at getting in, as long as you don't fall well below average . Aim for a 1213 SAT or a 28 ACT or higher, and you'll almost certainly get an offer of admission. As long as you meet the rest of the application requirements below, you'll be a shoo-in.

But if you score below our recommended target score, you may be one of the very few unlucky people to get rejected.

Ithaca College is a private liberal arts college with an acceptance rate of 73%. Since its founding in 1892, Ithaca has been known for its music and communications programs. The college has an enviable location in Ithaca, New York, overlooking  Cornell University  and Cayuga Lake. Students will find a wide range of majors through Ithaca's broad curriculum and five schools. On the athletic front, the Ithaca College Bombers compete in the NCAA Division III Liberty League Conference.

Considering applying to Ithaca College? Here are the admissions statistics you should know, including average SAT/ACT scores and GPAs of admitted students.

Acceptance Rate

During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, Ithaca College had an acceptance rate of 73%. This means that for every 100 students who applied, 73 students were admitted, making Ithaca's admissions process somewhat competitive.

SAT Scores and Requirements

Ithaca College has a test-optional standardized testing policy for most applicants. Students who were home-schooled or those who attended high schools that do not provide numerical or letter grades are still required to submit SAT or ACT scores. During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, 50% of admitted students submitted SAT scores.

This admissions data tells us that of those who submitted test scores during the 2018-19 admissions cycle, most of Ithaca's admitted students fall within the  top 35% nationally  on the SAT. For the evidence-based reading and writing section, 50% of students admitted to Ithaca scored between 590 and 680, while 25% scored below 590 and 25% scored above 680. On the math section, 50% of admitted students scored between 570 and 670, while 25% scored below 570 and 25% scored above 670. While the SAT is not required, this data tells us that a composite SAT score of 1350 or higher is competitive for Ithaca College.

Requirements

Ithaca College does not require SAT scores for admission for most students. For students who choose to submit scores, note that Ithaca participates in the scorechoice program, meaning that the admissions office will consider your highest score from each individual section across all SAT test dates. Ithaca College does not require the essay section of the SAT. At Ithaca College, SAT Subject tests are optional.

ACT Scores and Requirements

Ithaca College has a test-optional standardized testing policy for most applicants. Students who were home-schooled or those who attended high schools that do not provide numerical or letter grades are still required to submit SAT or ACT scores. During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, 17% of admitted students submitted ACT scores.

This admissions data tells us that of those who submitted scores during the 2018-19 admissions cycle, most of Ithaca's admitted students fall within the  top 18% nationally  on the ACT. The middle 50% of students admitted to Ithaca received a composite ACT score between 26 and 30, while 25% scored above 30 and 25% scored below 26.

Ithaca College does not require ACT scores for admission for most students. For students who choose to submit scores, note that Ithaca does not superscore ACT results; your highest composite ACT score will be considered. Ithaca does not require the ACT writing section.

In 2019, the average high school GPA for Ithaca College's incoming freshmen class was 3.33. This data suggests that most successful applicants to Ithaca College have primarily B grades.

Self-Reported GPA/SAT/ACT Graph

The admissions data in the graph is self-reported by applicants to Ithaca College. GPAs are unweighted. Find out how you compare to accepted students, see the real-time graph, and calculate your chances of getting in with a free Cappex account.

Admissions Chances

Ithaca College, which accepts over two-thirds of applicants, has a somewhat selective admissions process. However, Ithaca also has a  holistic admissions  process and is test-optional, and admissions decisions are based on much more than numbers. A strong  application essay  and  glowing letters of recommendation  can strengthen your application, as can participation in meaningful  extracurricular activities  and a  rigorous course schedule . The college is looking for students who will contribute to the campus community in meaningful ways, not just students who show promise in the classroom. While not required, Ithaca recommends  interviews  for interested applicants. Note that some programs at Ithaca require auditions or portfolios. Students with particularly compelling stories or achievements can still receive serious consideration even if their grades are outside of Ithaca's average range.

In the scattergram above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that most successful applicants had high school averages of a 3.0 or better, combined SAT scores of about 1050 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 21 or better.

Ithaca College Requirements

Now you know where you need to be for getting into Ithaca College from a grade and test score perspective. Let’s quickly outline what else you’ll need to provide for your application to get reviewed, and then we’ll move onto the most important section: differentiating your app.

How to get into Ithaca College

Follow these steps to maximize your chances of getting into Ithaca College. Everything you read above will help prepare you for what you need to achieve to have a shot at Ithaca College, but these steps will take you even further in applying that knowledge and differentiating your application.

Main Academic Excellence that is in line with Ithaca College admission standards.

  • Score at least a 1245 on the SAT or 54 on the ACT.
  • Maintain a GPA of at least a 3.63.

Join Extracurriculars that Align with Ithaca College’s Values.

  • Join your school band, a sports team or another group activity. If Ithaca College values music heavily, for example, then try to participate in an organization related to that topic.
  • Volunteer in your hometown. Ithaca has tons of ways to be involved beyond just the college. Ithaca College wants applicants that are also good ambassadors for the school - they want students who will give back to the local community and broader Ithaca area in general.
  • Spend your summer doing something that speaks to your values, personal growth, leadership qualities and other less quantifiable characteristics. Ithaca College needs to see past your test scores and grades - they need to know that you will be a valuable and contributing member of their community. You are more than grades and test scores - your experiences should demonstrate that.

Prepare Your Application

  • Write a stellar essay that shows Ithaca College something they can’t figure out from the other parts of your application. For a detailed guide on writing the best college essay, check this out.
  • Get teacher recs that speak to your character. If you know what you’re majoring in and include that in your Ithaca College app, try to have at least 1 recommendation from a teacher in that department.
  • Apply Before the Deadline. Too many students wait until the last minute to submit their application, and too much can go wrong during this precious time window. Since many students are applying on the last day, it’s possible that Ithaca College’s own system crashes. Don’t risk the added stress this can cause - submit your app a few days early.

Information on Readmission and Transferring Credits

Requirements for consideration for readmission.

To be considered for readmission following academic suspension, you must:

1. Obtain an Application for Readmission to Ithaca College from the Office of the Registrar.  You will need to complete the application and submit an essay. Your essay must include an educational plan that describes how you intend to complete a successful program of study during the semester in which your are readmitted. Forward official transcripts of any studies completed at other institutions during the period you are away from Ithaca College.

2.  Submit the Application for Readmission to the Office of the Registrar by July 1 for readmission for the fall semester and by December 1 for readmission for the spring semester.

3.  Complete at least six credit hours concurrently at an accredited institution. Earn no final grades less than a B. This condition applies to all courses taken even if you enroll in more than six credits. For information about accredited institutions, contact the Office of the Registrar at 607 274 3127. International students must take a minimum of 12 credits at another accredited institution to keep their visa and must receive no final grades less than a B.

4.  Enroll in coursework in the humanities and sciences' disciplines; coursework must be approve by the Dean's Office prior to enrollment. In other words, the courses should be similar to those listed in the School of Humanities and Sciences' section of the Ithaca College Undergraduate Catalog and must meet the criteria for transfer to Ithaca College. Do not take a course at another institution if you already received credit for its equivalent at Ithaca College as it will  not be transferable.

 How to Transfer Credit

1. Prior to taking a course elsewhere, you should contact the Ithaca College department chair of the department where you wish transfer credit to be granted, and the department chair of your major department, to ensure that the proposed coursework fulfills graduation requirements. If you do not take this step, it is possible that courses taken will not be eligible for transfer to the College and may not fulfill requirements for graduation. Please be aware that Themes and Perspectives courses, ICC Capstone courses, and CLA courses (except as part of an approved major or minor) must be taken at Ithaca College.

2.   Inactive students (ie. students who are on academic suspension or administratively withdrawn from Ithaca College) will no longer complete a Petition for Transfer Credit. Instead, students must submit official transcripts from an accredited institution upon completion of coursework at that institution. These transcripts must be submitted to the Ithaca College Registrar's Office. Although you will not complete a petition for transfer credit form prior to enrollment in courses, you should contact the Ithaca College department chair of the department where you wish transfer credit to be granted, and the department chair of your major department, to ensure that the proposed coursework fulfills graduation requirements.

3.   If you are readmitted to Ithaca College, the Office of the Registrar will review your official transcript and will transfer these credits to the College in accordance with the transfer credit policy outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog. While grades of C- or better will transfer to Ithaca College, a student returning from an academic suspension must meet the grade criterion outlined in the letter of suspension.

4. Note that credits taken elsewhere may be transferable, but grades from other institutions do not transfer and therefore will not affect your Ithaca College GPA. Only courses for which you earn a final grade of C- or better may transfer to Ithaca College.
