Mumtaz: The ‘B-Grade Actress’ Who Became A Superstar

biography of film actress mumtaz

A modern example of India’s shared heritage with Iran, her career was itself nothing short of a film story.

Enamored of the silver screen when young, she began with child roles. But on coming of age, found no major actor ready to share screen space with her apart from a real — and real-life — strongman, until the foremost thespian of the time gave her a rare chance.

After Dilip Kumar agreed to Mumtaz as one of the romantic partners for one of the twins in “Ram Aur Shyam”, there was no looking back for her. Male actors, who had once spurned her as a ‘B-grade’ actress were now more than ready to accept her. She was so much sought after that a superstar of the time, with whom she had a string of successes, reportedly went into a sulk if she acted with other heroes.

But Mumtaz, who, with her large expressive eyes that could reflect everything from saucy innocence to sparkling sensuality to hurt anguish, a voluptuous yet lithe figure, emoting capacity, dancing skills, and a readiness to experiment, did not presume much on her fortune.

After barely a decade as one of Bollywood’s most popular actresses and a sex symbol of the age, she married a rich NRI businessman and soon bid adieu to the film world at the peak of her career.

Her marital life was not always smooth, and she battled long with cancer but finally was able to celebrate her 75th birthday.

Born in the then Bombay on July 31, 1947, Mumtaz Askari’s father was an Indian and her mother Iranian. She gained her first glimpse of the celluloid world when she accompanied her sibling, who had got into acting, to a set, and soon became a child artiste herself when she was 11.

As she grew older and sought starring roles, she only got bit roles in films like O.P. Ralhan’s “Gehra Daag”, and Sunil Dutt’s star “Mujhe Jeene Do” (both 1963). One bigger role was as the second heroine in the Persian epic “Rustam Sohrab” (1963), where she plays Sohrab’s (Prem Nath) love interest.

It was only Dara Singh, seeking to step into the celluloid world himself, who accepted her as a co-star in a string of action thrillers, such as “Veer Bhimsen”, “Samson”, “Hercules”, “Baaghi” (all 1964), “Tarzan Comes to Delhi”, “Tarzan and King Kong”, “Son of Hatimtai”, “Sikandar-e-Azam”, “Rustom-e-Hind”, “Raaka”, “Jadui Angoothi” (all 1965), “Daku Mangal Singh” (1966), and so on. Mumtaz and Dara Singh would turn into relatives when her sister married his younger brother Randhawa.

While she was making a decent amount of money, Mumtaz could have been trapped in this rut. It was a small role of a village belle, opposite comedian Mehmood, playing a wannabe director, in the laugh riot “Pyar Kiye Jaa” (1966) that proved to be a watershed.

According to accounts, Mehmood was impressed with her acting and recommended her to Dilip Kumar as casting for “Ram Aur Shyam” was underway. Dilip Kumar, the helpful man he was, assented and she was chosen to play the boisterous Shyam’s friend Shanta, who falls in love with the cowed-down Ram when fate leads to the twins’ exchanging places.

All avenues opened to her following the success of “Ram Aur Shyam”. a strong showing in the romantic potboiler “Patthar Ke Sanam” (1967), whereas the second lead heroine, her elfin charm stood up to Waheeda Rehman’s grace in a song like “Tauba yeh matwaali chaal”, and then in Shammi Kapoor’s “Brahmachari” (1968), in which Mumtaz played a vamp out to dupe a promiscuous villain.

“Do Raaste” (1969), and then “Khilona” (1970), in which Mumtaz bravely took up the role of a prostitute — which was turned down by many others and went on to get her first and only Filmfare Award — further cemented her position. She even held her own against Zeenat Aman as the hero’s love interest in “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971)

Mumtaz struck up good chemistry with Rajesh Khanna — and all their 10-odd films, from “Do Raaste” (1969) to “Prem Kahanai” (1975), including notables like “Aap Ki Kasam”, “Roti”, and “Apna Desh”, was known for their peppy songs.

She did films with Feroz Khan, Jeetendra, Dharmendra, and Shashi Kapoor, some of whom had spurned her earlier as a “mere stunt actress”, before calling it a day at the height of her fame.

She did attempt one comeback in 1990, but it wasn’t successful, and she did not repeat the venture again.

What marked Mumtaz’s brief, but stellar film foray were her kinetic performances in songs of her films and that is how she will be remembered for long. Let us look at a few of them.

She left an impact in songs where she was serenaded or remembered — “Phir tumhari yaad aayi hai sanam” (“Rustam Sohrab”), “Tauba yeh matwali chaal” (“Patthar Ke Sanam”) and “Aaj mausam bada beimaan hai” (“Loafer”). But she also created a sensation with her energetic jiving in “O meri maina, tu maan le mera kehna” (“Pyaar Kiye Jaa”).

In “Brahmachari”, she proved a sari is no bar to shaking a leg with full-on energy as she matched Shammi Kapoor in “Aaj kal tere mere pyaar ke charche”, and then went on to show she could exhibit grace too with “Bindiya chamkegi” (“Do Raaste”).

But some of her most memorable songs were from her hits with Rajesh Khanna — the gay abandon of “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar” (“Aap Ki Kasam”, 1974), the intrinsic playfulness of “Gore rang pe na ghuman kar”, and the gentle silliness of “Chal dariya mein kud jaaye” (“Prem Kahani”, 1975).

And finally, the brazen effrontery of “Le jayenge, le jayenge dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge” (“Chor Machaye Shor”, 1974), where she is an effective foil to the irrepressible Shashi Kapoor.

She had enough meat on her that she attracted crowds with her shaking dances and revealing outfits for the time.

How could India West justify so much space for this B-Grade actress?

Sir Anil, You are a Moron Sir !!!!

Hey Vijay , what is your claim to fame beside being an idiot ?

A very appropriate coverage for a “superstar”; she did not remain a ‘B’ grade actress for too long…..

How Mumtaz, once shunned by Shashi Kapoor, Jeetendra, Dharmendra, and ignored by actresses, became Bollywood’s ‘highest paid actress’

Yesteryear diva mumtaz had all the prerequisites of a hindi film heroine -- she could dance, act, and exude sensuality on the big screen, all at once..

biography of film actress mumtaz

For those who measure an actor’s career by the number of hits, Mumtaz’s career properly began only in 1969 with Raj Khosla’s Do Raaste , after starting out as a lead actress in 1963. The golden jubilee hit provided validation to the utterly gorgeous beauty who had all the prerequisites of a Hindi film heroine — she could dance, act, and exude sensuality on the big screen, all at once.

Though Do Raaste was majorly a Rajesh Khanna film, two songs, ‘ Bindiya Chamkegi’ and ‘Chhup Gaye Saare Nazaare’ from Laxmikant-Pyarelal brand of music, made filmmakers take notice of this not-so-new girl on the block. She dazzled in an orange saree, bindi, gajra, and bangles, and made it difficult for the viewers to look away with her timeless expressions. However, at the time of the making of the song, Mumtaz was doubtful about its success. “ Mujhe laga it’s a bit slow-paced for a dance number. But who knows what will become famous and what not? Sab upparwaale aur public ke haath mein hain. (It’s all in the hands of God and public),” she told the National Herald.

Do Raaste marked her rise to stardom and inaugurated a fruitful period of Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz hits. Together, they delivered eight films (Do Raaste, Bandhan, Sachcha Jhootha, Dushman, Apna Desh, Aap Ki Kasam, Roti), seven of which were absolute favourites of moviegoers. Mumtaz told film journalist Subhash K Jha, “It was God’s blessing that not one film of mine with Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) flopped.” She was among the few friends of the late actor whom he would often call by jokingly saying, ‘Aye Moti, idhar aa…’ as she had a “voluptuous” body. She also told The Times of India that whenever there was an announcement of her film with another hero, ‘he would sulk in a corner’. “He could work with anyone — he did so many films with Sharmila (Tagore) ji — but he wanted me to work only with him,” she said.

But Mumtaz’s entry into the film industry was not smooth. Still, she never feared hard work. Helen, her contemporary, once described her as, “a go-getter”.

Born on July 31 1947, to Iranian parents, Mumtaz’s first brush with the world of movie-making business happened when she was just 10. She used to carry her sister Malika’s vanity box to the film studios. Mumtaz once recalled going on the set of Dil Deke Dekho (1959) with her and falling in love with Shammi Kapoor, the lead actor of the film. In an interview with Suwbha Chopra, Mumtaz narrated, “I was looking at him and his song was being shot. I saw him and told my sister, ‘Mallka, I will marry him’. She told me he was already married. I said, ‘So what, I want a man like him. He is so handsome.'”

Festive offer

Soon after her fifth standard education, Mumtaz dropped out of school and started working in films. At 11, she starred as a child actor in four films — Sone Ki Chidiya, Stree, Talaq and Mujhe Jeene Do. She got her first lead role at 15 as she got paired opposite Dara Singh in the 1963 film Faulad. The actor holds great regard for the late wrestler-turned-actor as he agreed to work with her when all the A-listers, including Shashi Kapoor , Jeetendra, Dharmendra and Rajendra Kumar, refused.

“Rajendra Kumar used to say, ‘she can’t be a heroine,'” Mumtaz revealed. Shashi Kapoor refused to star in Manmohan Desai’s Sachaa Jhutha because the director-producer had cast Mumtaz as the female lead.

Mumtaz and Dara Singh starred together in 16 films and even became the highest-paid actors in B-grade films. Mumtaz told The Times of India, “While he earned Rs 4 lakhs per film, I got Rs 2.5 lakhs, which was a huge amount back then. After working with Dara ji, my luck changed for the better.”

Despite being stereotyped as a “stunt woman”, Mumtaz didn’t stop trying. She popped up in songs and small appearances. She starred in a small role in Pyar Kiye Jaa, a 1966 romantic comedy, starring Mehmood in the lead role. Though she only had a few scenes, Mumtaz delivered the best comic lines as a simple village girl, Meena. She stood out with her vivacious energy and bubbly personality. As you watch the film today, her role of a naive starlet waiting to see her name on the billboard seems prophetic.

It was Mehmood who became instrumental in getting Mumtaz one of her career-best opportunities. He took some of her scenes to thespian Dilip Kumar and convinced him to cast her in the 1967 film, Ram Aur Shyam.

mumtaz dilip kumar

“Dilip Kumar Saab played a big hand in my stardom. If he hadn’t worked with me in Ram aur Shyam, I wouldn’t have been able to become a heroine. I was nothing in comparison to Dilip Saab and when he said yes to working with me, the industry woke up. I shall remain indebted to him. The offers started pouring in,” Mumtaz told Subhash K Jha.

The smoothness of dialogue delivery, rounded portrayal of characters, seductive looks, and ability to command the screen strengthened Mumtaz’s hold over the audience and the filmmakers in the late 1960s and 70s. She looked every bit glamorous in Yash Chopra’s Aadmi Aur Insaan, also starring Dharmendra, Feroz Khan and Saira Banu. Mumtaz got the opportunity to be more than just a pretty face in the 1970 film Khilona. She showcased her ample calibre as she played Chand, a dancer in a brothel who helps a man who lises his sanity after his lover’s death. The film won her her first and only Filmfare Best Actress Award.

A year later, in 1971, Mumtaz starred in Tere Mere Sapne, opposite Dev Anand, and the film remains one of her favourites as here, too, she got a meaty role of a wife who is disillusioned by her husband’s success. Some of her ‘wife’ roles that are still remembered are from the films Aap Ki Kasam and Prem Kahani, both with Rajesh Khanna.

Mumtaz achieved success with ‘hard work and discipline’, as she admitted, and became the ‘highest-paid actress of her times’. She revealed to Subhash K Jha, “I was being paid Rs. 8 lakhs even as a struggler. I was the highest-paid actress of my time.”

mumtaz rajesh khanna

In one of her interviews, she accepted that though her mother took care of her finances, she was adamant about deciding her fees on her own. “I will final[sic] the price and I will listen to the story, how do you want the money, that is between you and the producer,” she used to tell her mother. She refused to star in Ramesh Sippy’s Seeta Aur Geeta as she was denied what she wanted for the film. She admitted asking Rs 6 lakh for shooting the 1976 film Nagin just for six days.

She shared the screen with all the leading men, even those who once refused to work with her. She also claimed that most of her male co-stars ‘flirted’ with her and were ‘infatuated’ with her. But the one who fell deeply in love with her was Shammi Kapoor, who even proposed to her for marriage. But she was only 18 and wanted to build a career, so she refused.

“Kapoors didn’t like it if the bahus in their family were in the film line. Shammiji told me that if I wanted him to be happy with me, I would have to give up my career. Now at that young age, I was very ambitious and wanted to reach somewhere. I wanted to settle my family as well. Just to sit at home didn’t go down with me,” she was quoted in a 2020 ETimes interview.

Even her mother warned her against marrying Kapoor as he was too popular among women. Also, her mother stopped her because, “He was a Hindu and I was a Muslim.” Mumtaz eventually ended up marrying Ugandan millionaire Mayur Madhwani in 1974 and moved to London, bidding goodbye to her career in the movies.

As much love and attention as she got from her male co-stars, she never became friends with any of her female co-stars. She once told The Times of India that besides Waheeda Rehman, no other heroine ever spoke to her. “They just pulled up a chair and sat afar – not even a hello. I have no idea why they did that. But I used to happily sit with my group dancers and share lunch,” Mumtaz said.

The yesteryear diva also had her share of tragedies in life, but she also recovered from them with her ‘never give up’ attitude. Mumtaz was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 54. She reportedly underwent six chemotherapies and 35 radiation sessions before becoming cancer-free. She previously told TOI, “I don’t give up easily. Even death will have to fight me.”

She dealt with her husband’s infidelity but gave him another chance since he confided in her. He allegedly told her (as quoted by Pinkvilla), “‘Mumtaz, you’re my wife. I love you and will always love you. I will never leave you.'”

Following the incident, Mumtaz had a brief relationship outside of her marriage as she told the publication, “After the episode, I began feeling lonely. Main thodi rubabwali (headstrong) thi. I felt hurt. So, I flew down to India. When you’re amidst thorns and someone comes along with a rose, you do get carried away. But it was nothing serious. Just a temporary phase, which ended soon.”

Now, Mumtaz lives happily with her husband in London, but frequently visits India. She is not averse to the idea of returning to the movies, given that she is offered a ‘suitable role’.

Failing which, Mumtaz, who turns 76 today, and has lived life like a ‘queen’ over the years, would prefer to die “shaan se.”

Mumtaz on her Hindi film career: I was the highest paid actress of my times

Amid murmurs of her comeback with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series Heeramandi, the legendary Mumtaz walks down the memory lane in this exclusive interview with Firstpost.

Mumtaz on her Hindi film career: I was the highest paid actress of my times

The iconic Mumtaz , who was the collective heart-throb of the nation in the 1960s and 70s with blockbusters like Khilona, Do Raaste, Dushman , Aap Ki Kasam and Chor Machaye Shor,  turns a year older today on July 31. Amid murmurs of her comeback with Sanjay Leela Bhansali ’s web series Heeramandi , the legend walks down the memory lane in an exclusive interview with Firstpost.

How do you manage to stay so young at your age?

I am very particular about my health. I look after everything, my hair ,my teeth, my body ….By God’s grace, I have the physique of  a 21-year old( laughs). Shall I tell you something? Even as I am speaking to you, I am sitting on the floor exercising (she sends a video to validate her claim).

You are a true-blue diva.

Thank you. I get so much love from everyone within and outside the film industry to this day. I am blessed. I don’t deserve this kind of adulation. I guess I must have done something right for people to love me even after so many years. I left the film industry forty years ago. For people to still remember me is a miracle.

It’s the good vibes. Your favourite co-star Rajesh Khanna was such a huge star. Why did he lose his stardom in just a few years?

Look, I will say just one thing. We the stars are what we are because of your love. Without your love, we are  nothing. It wasn’t entirely Rajesh Khanna ’s fault. I remember when he was known as the phenomenon, my bungalow was very close to his. I have seen big-name producers and directors behaving like his chamcha . These respected filmmakers should also have been aware of their own dignity and respect. They would be seen fawning at his feet as if he was  God, while his then-girlfriend Anju Mahendroo, poor girl, played host all night. She would serve food and drinks till 3 am. She was such a wonderful person. I have seen the same night-long session at Shammi Kapoor ’s home. He used  to spend a fortune on entertaining guests. So these stars are also to blame.

Why did Shammi Kapoor need to do this?

I think Shammi Kapoor let himself go and decided to just live life the way he wanted to. But to his credit,, when he came on the sets, he worked hard. The same goes for Rajesh Khanna. It is up to the artists to retain their dignity.  Look at Sanjay Bhansali. He is such a huge filmmaker. But he maintains his distance from everyone. He does his work, treats his actors with respect and goes home. You are paying the actors. Why do you need to do their  chamchagiri ? Do you know who my favourite artiste was? Mohammad Rafi, do you know why?

Because he was so disciplined, humble, and god-fearing. I loved attending his song recordings. I was very childlike—I still am. I would tease him by screaming, ‘ Rafi Saab I love you .’ He would turn towards me, then turn away blushing. He was my favourite.

And you are everyone’s favourite?

I know. It is too much. I can’t handle it. And because I’ve maintained myself, they recognize me immediately. Even my voice…they recognize! What more does a human being want in life? I must have done something good in my last life to deserve this.

Rajesh Khanna should have married Anju Mahendroo?

I know. But then it has to be destined also, no? Who knows what is written in one’s destiny? I had not even thought  in my dreams that I would get married to someone from Uganda and  that I’d quit and leave. I loved our film  industry. All my family and friends lived here only. I thought I’d get married here only with someone. But look where marriage took me.

You and Sharmila Tagore did the maximum number of films with Rajesh  Khanna. Was  there any rivalry between you two?

Rivalry between me and  Sharmila Ji?  Not at all. I respect her a lot. She is far more educated and sophisticated  than me. I started working  from the age of 8 so I learned everything on the job. Whether it is Sharmila or any other heroine, I never had time to interact with them. I worked round the clock. I didn’t even get time to attend my own film premiers. Those rumours of us hating each other are untrue. Where is the common ground for comparison? That we both worked with Rajesh Khanna? We had our own different audiences. But yes, I did more films with Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) than Sharmila Ji did. It was God’s blessing that not one film of mine with Kaka flopped. Sharmila Ji had flops with him. As for Rajesh Khanna, he never fuelled the rivalry, never spoke a word against Sharmila Ji. But yes, he would get upset when I signed  films with other heroes like Dharmendra Ji or Dev (Anand) Saab. He would sulk. But even he worked with other heroines, I never sulked. He thought he owned me. But never mind. It meant he cared for me. One is possessive only about those one cares for.

The films that you did with Rajesh Khanna owe their success to you as  much as he?

I cannot compare myself to Rajesh Khanna. He was phenomenal. Yes, perhaps our stars matched on screen. We clicked as a pair. This is God’s blessing. Our stars matched.

You started as child artiste?

Yes, I did four films as a child-  Sone Ki Chidiya, Stree , Talaq  and  Mujhe Jeene Do . Please clarify that I never worked as a junior artiste. I don’t know who makes up such stories about me.

Your journey from supporting roles to the female superstar is exemplary.

It took a lot of hard work and discipline. I had the looks, for which I thank my  parents. I take no credit for it. Genes  count. Why is everyone in the Kapoor family so beautiful? Because Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor were  good-looking… it goes on. If you are good-looking and you work hard, if you can dance, nothing can stop you from attaining success.

Luck also counts?

I don’t believe in luck. My advice to those who want to make something of their  lives: never  give up. I started at  8 and never gave up.  Lage raho Munnabhai ! As a heroine, my first film was  Faulad  with Dara Singh Ji. Dilip Kumar Saab played a big hand in my stardom. If he hadn’t worked with me in  Ram aur Shyam,  I wouldn’t have been able  to become a heroine. Mehmood Saab took portions of my film to show to Dilip Saab. I was nothing in comparison to Dilip Saab and when he said yes to working with me, the industry woke up. I shall remain indebted to him. The offers started pouring in. I was offered Ramesh Sippy’s  Seeta Aur Geeta  but we couldn’t agree on the price.

What was it like working with Dilip Kumar?

Working in  Ram Aur Shyam  was such a pleasure. Both Dilip Saab and Saira Ji treated me with so much care. Saira Ji was so warm during the shooting. The first scene required me to hit Dilip Saab. I was petrified. He said. ‘ Why won’t you hit me? Hit me hard.’.  I will never forget the kindness of people like Prithviraj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor , Mehmood Saab, Sunil Saab… we lost them so  early. Good human beings go away quickly, the ones who are just there keep hanging on forever (laughs).

Is it true that Shammi Kapoor wanted to marry you?

Yes. But he wanted me to give up my career when I was just 17. He used to love me tremendously. I don’t think anyone can give me the same amount of love that he showered on me. I never forgot him. Even today, when his name is mentioned, tears well up in my eyes. Look, it was not a love affair. It was much more. We loved each other deeply. But unfortunately, womenfolk in the Kapoor family did not work during those days. He had to respect his family’s wishes. I had to respect my career.

So you gave up love for your career?

What else could I do? I had a family to support. I was being paid Rs. 8 lakhs even as a struggler. I was the highest paid actress of my times. As a child, when my mother asked whom I wanted to marry when I grow up, I’d say I wanted to marry the son of the Shah-en-Shah Of Iran. I wanted only the best in life. You need to think high.

Why haven’t you written  your  autobiography as  yet?

I have received offers and big money to write my story. I will do it when I am ready. Even when I make a comeback  to acting, it would have to be something worthy of me. I watch the films that are being made these days. I am sorry to say, they’ve nothing to offer me. Why should I play the mother or the Bhabhi? I have always done what I wanted in life. God has given me everything. My husband treats me like a queen. He has spoilt me.

  • Quotes I feel blessed to have worked with Rajesh Khanna. Had it not been for him, I would have been never considered as an actress who can do lead roles. Bandhan and Do Raaste were two films I was shooting with Rajesh Khanna before Kaka got the superstar status. Once Aradhana released and well known senior critics hailed him as the first superstar of India ever.Subsequently our two films got released and became platinum jubilee hits and since I played his romantic interest in both these films, I began getting plum roles from then on as the lead actress. From being a supporting actress in A grade films and being a lead heroine in B grade films, after I got paired with Superstar Rajesh Khanna I became the highest paid actress from 1969-1975.

Mumtaz: The ‘B-grade actress’ who became a top Bollywood star

biography of film actress mumtaz

By Vikas Datta

A modern example of India’s shared heritage with Iran, her career was itself nothing short of a film story.

Enamoured of the silver screen when young, she began with child roles. but on coming of age, found no major actor ready to share screen space with her apart from a reel — and real life — strongman, until the foremost thespian of the time gave her a rare chance.

After Dilip Kumar agreed to Mumtaz as one of the romantic partners for one of the twins in “Ram Aur Shyam” (1967), there was no looking back for her.

Her marital life was not always smooth and she battled long with cancer, but finally was able to celebrate her 75th birthday on Monday.

Born in the then Bombay on July 31, 1947, Mumtaz Askari’s father was an Indian and her mother Iranian. She gained her first glimpse of the celluloid world when she accompanied her sibling, who had got into acting, to a set, and soon became a child artiste herself when 11.

As she grew older and sought starring roles, she only got bit roles in films like O.P. Ralhan’s “Gehra Daag” and Sunil Dutt’s stark “Mujhe Jeene Do” (both 1963).

Dilip Kumar, the helpful man he was, assented and she was chosen to play the boisterous Shyam’s friend Shanta, who falls in love with the cowed-down Ram when fate leads to the twins exchanging places.

All avenues opened up to her following the success of “Ram Aur Shyam”. a strong showing in the romantic potboiler “Patthar Ke Sanam” (1967), where as the second lead heroine, her elfin charm stood up to Waheeda Rehman’s grace in a song like “Tauba yeh matwaali chaal”,  and then in Shammi Kapoor’s “Brahmachari” (1968), in which Mumtaz played a vamp out to dupe a promiscuous villain.

“Do Raaste” (1969), and then “Khilona” (1970) , in which Mumtaz bravely took up the role of a prostitute — which was turned down by many others, and went on to get her first and only Filmfare Award — further cemented her position. She even held her own against Zeenat Aman as the hero’s love interest in “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971)

Mumtaz struck up a good chemistry with Rajesh Khanna — and all their 10-odd films, from “Do Raaste” (1969) to “Prem Kahanai” (1975), including notables like “Aap Ki Kasam”, “Roti”, and “Apna Desh”, were known for their peppy songs.

She did films with Feroz Khan, Jeetendra, Dharmendra and Shashi Kapoor, some of whom had spurned her earlier as a “mere stunt actress”, before calling it a day at the height of her fame.

She did attempt one comeback in 1990, but it wasn’t successful and she did not repeat the venture again.

What marked Mumtaz’s brief but stellar film foray were her kinetic performances in songs of her films and that is how she will be remembered for long. Let us take a look at a few of them.

Also viewed, quick facts.

Mumtaz or Mumtaz Madhvani ( née Askari ; born 31 July 1947) is a Hindi Film actress. She won a Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her character in Khilona in 1971. Though she started with small supporting roles, she later rose up the hierarchy, and worked with all the top actors of her time, in the lead roles. She is remembered as one of the best actresses and dancers as well as a sex symbol of the 60s and 70s. She is still recognised as a diva of her times.

Mumtaz was born to Abdul Saleem Askari (a dry fruits vendor) and Shadi Habib Agha who hailed from Mashhad, Iran. They got divorced just one year after she was born. Her younger sister is actor Mallika who was married to wrestler and Indian actor Randhawa - younger brother of wrestler and actor Dara Singh .

Mumtaz appeared as a child actress in Sone Ki Chidiya (1958). As a teenager she acted as an extra in Vallah Kya Baat Hai , Stree and Sehra in the early 1960s. As an adult, her first role in A-grade films was that of the role of the sister of the hero in O. P. Ralhan 's Gehra Daag . She got small roles in successful films such as Mujhe Jeene Do . Later, she got the role of the main lead heroine in 16 action films, including Faulad , Veer Bhimsen , Tarzan Comes to Delhi , Sikandar-E-Azam , Rustom-E-Hind , Raaka , and Daku Mangal Singh , with freestyle wrestler Dara Singh , and was labelled as a stunt-film heroine. In the films that Dara Singh and Mumtaz did together, Dara's remuneration was INR 450,000 per film, and Mumtaz's salary was INR 250,000 per film.

It took Raj Khosla 's blockbuster Do Raaste (1969), starring Rajesh Khanna , to finally make Mumtaz a full-fledged star. Although Mumtaz had a minor role, director Khosla filmed four songs with her. The film made her popular, and she acknowledged that even though she had a small role, it was still one of her favourite films. In 1969, her films Do Raaste and Bandhan , with Rajesh Khanna, became top grossers of the year, earning around 65 million and 28 million respectively. She played Rajendra Kumar 's leading lady in Tangewala . Shashi Kapoor , who had earlier refused to work with her in Saccha Jootha because she was a "stunt-film heroine", now wanted her to be his heroine in Chor Machaye Shor (1973). She acted opposite Dharmendra as the lead heroine in films such as Loafer and Jheel Ke Us Paar (1973).

She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for one of her favourite films Khilona in 1970, and she was "very happy that the audience accepted her in an emotional role". Mumtaz frequently acted with Feroz Khan in hits such as Mela (1971), Apradh (1972) and Nagin (1976). Her pairing with Rajesh Khanna was the most successful in a total of 10 films. She quit films after her film Aaina (1977) to concentrate on her family. She made a comeback 13 years later with her final film Aandhiyan in 1990.

Personal life

Mumtazmarried businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974. They have two daughters, one of whom, Natasha, marriedactor Feroz Khan 's son Fardeen Khan in 2006.

Relationships

Shammi Kapoor loved her and wanted to marry her too but Mumtaz was not ready to leave her filmy career at her early age as Kapoor didn't want from his wife to work in the film industry after getting married. Dara Singh gave her the nickname 'Stunt Princess' and also agreed to be paired opposite her in B-grade movies. Rajesh Khanna also acted in many movies with her. It was also rumoured that Dharmendra had also fallen in love with her.

Mumtaz won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Khilona in 1970. Actually, no one was interested in accepting the role of "Chaand" for Khilona, just because she was a prostitute in the storyline. But with that role Mumtaz bagged her one and only Filmfare Best Actress Award.

During her career, she was awarded with one Filmfare Award for Best Actress, out of three nominations, and one BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actress.

  • BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actress – Brahmachari (1968)

Happy Birthday Mumtaz: From action to romance to family drama, Mumtaz gained favour from her fans with her acting and dancing skills. On actress 76th birthday, here's a look at some of her best movies and songs.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUMTAZ: Veteran actress Mumtaz who is remembered for her phenomenal Bollywood career and her roles in films like Khilona, Roti, Brahmachari, Loafer, Do Raaste, and Aap Ki Kasam among others turns a year older today.  From action to romance to family drama, Mumtaz gained favour from her fans with her acting and dancing skills. Still recognised as the Diva of her times, her pairing with superstar Rajesh Khanna was most admired and they co-starred in as many as eight films together.

From featuring in some evergreen and classic Bollywood films to being a part of some popular songs like Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche, Gore Rang Pe Itna Guman Kar, Bindiya Chamkegi, and Ye Reshmi Zulfein, the evergreen Bollywood diva clearly reigned during the golden era of cinema. She went beyond the stereotypical boundaries that were set on female actresses at that time, further leaving the audiences enchanted with her acting skills and charms.

As the actress celebrates her 76th birthday on Monday, July 31, 2023, what could be more perfect than remembering some of her best films and also the songs that got popular with fans?

Mumtaz Birthday: Best films

  • Brahmachari (1968) While the film revolved around Brahmachari (Shammi Kapoor), Mumtaz still gave her best in a supporting role. The film later also won the Filmfare Best Movie Award.
  • Do Raaste (1969) The film that got her much-needed success, Mumtaz clearly outshined herself in the film as she featured alongside the superstar, late actor Rajesh Khanna.

Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche from Brahmachari is still remembered as one of the peppiest tracks of her time.

Gore Rang Pe Na Itna Gumaan Kar from Roti shows the playful antics between Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna. Sang by the legendary singers Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, the song is still fresh in fans’ minds.

Bindiya Chamkegi from Do Raaste is an example of an enchanting melody sung by the renowned Lata Mangeshkar.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Aj5HvxyNmw

Ye Reshmi Zulfein from Do Raaste is another masterpiece from the 1969 film. Sung by Mohammed Rafi, the song clearly changed the course of romantic melodies in the Indian film industry.
