New Delhi, India –  A teenage Muslim actress’s decision to quit Bollywood , saying she was not happy with her work since it was taking her away from her faith, has triggered a social media debate in India .

On Sunday, Zaira Wasim, 18, wrote a long post on Facebook, which she later shared on Twitter and Instagram, saying she was bidding adieu to what many referred to as a “promising” career in the Indian film industry.

“This field indeed brought a lot of love, support, and applause my way, but what it also did was to lead me to a path of ignorance, as I silently and unconsciously transitioned out of ‘imaan’ [faith],” Wasim said in her post.

“While I continued to work in an environment that consistently interfered with my ‘imaan’, my relationship with my religion was threatened,” the teenager, who has acted in two films so far, wrote.

Wasim, who hails from Srinagar – the capital city of India-administered Kashmir – rose to fame in 2016 when she made her debut in “Dangal” (Wrestling Match), which also starred superstar Aamir Khan .

“Dangal” was inspired by the real-life story of two successful wrestling sisters from Haryana state in India’s north. The teenager played one of Khan’s two daughters in the movie, which became a mega Bollywood hit and grossed nearly $300m worldwide.

Wasim won widespread praise and several awards for the film, including the prestigious National Film Award for best supporting actress in 2017.

“Five years ago, I made a decision that changed my life forever. As I stepped my foot in Bollywood, it opened doors of massive popularity for me. I started to become the prime candidate of public attention, I was projected as the gospel of the idea of success and was often identified as a role model for the youth,” the 18-year-old said in her post.

“However, that’s never something that I set out to do or become, especially with regards to my ideas of success and failure, which I had just started to explore and understand.”

Wasim said she had “struggled” to become “someone else” for a long time. “… though I may fit here perfectly, I do not belong here,” she wrote.

In Wasim’s second film, the 2017 runaway hit “Secret Superstar” starring Khan again, she played a burqa-clad Muslim teenager, who dreams of becoming a singer but faces opposition from her conservative father. Undeterred, she follows her passion by anonymously posting her songs on the internet.

Al Jazeera’s calls and messages to Wasim, asking for her response to disappointment and questions over her decision to quit films, went unanswered.

Support and criticism

“I don’t know what made you take this tough decision, but I am feeling sad,” a fan named Khushboo Kapoor commented on Wasim’s Facebook post, which had more than 17,000 comments and was shared over 13,000 times.

Former Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon suggested Wasim could have exited “gracefully” and kept her “regressive views” to herself.

Many felt Wasim’s departure from films would make it harder for other Muslim women in India to pursue a career in cinema.

Actor Mohommed Ali Shah told Al Jazeera that while Wasim’s decision to quit acting because of her religion “should be respected”, she could have done it “quietly”.

“She should have left quietly and not made it public as it sets a wrong precedent for other Muslim actresses who have worked hard to earn their name in the field,” he said.

Twitter user Ifra Jan said Wasim’s post has made it “difficult for every Muslim woman to choose an unconventional career”. “As if our society wasn’t enough!” she posted.

“But please don’t leave spitting at an industry, audience that gave you so much,” she added.

However, in an article for The Quint website, Hiba Beg questioned the “messiah complex” behind “saving” Muslim women.

“We must stop using Muslim women as victims to make ourselves feel better about our own choices,” she wrote. “Stop playing saviours to a community that did not ask for your help – it is quite simple.”

Debates on religion

Since Wasim belongs to the disputed Kashmir region – India’s only Muslim-majority state – social media debates tended to weigh in on how “permissive” Islam was towards Muslims acting in films, especially women.

Delhi-based Islamic scholar Ali Ahmed Qasmi told Al Jazeera that working in films was prohibited in Islam for both men and women, as he welcomed Wasim’s decision.

“Women, according to Islam, are not even allowed to speak or meet people from outside their family. How can it be right then to work in films where they have to expose their bodies?” he said.

Barkha Dutt, India’s leading TV journalist, said she was “deeply disturbed at the indoctrination of religious conservatism” behind Wasim’s departure from films.

“Choice is sometimes a complicated word,” Dutt posted, leading to a spirited discussion, in which many Muslims also came to the actress’s defence.

Omar Abdullah, former chief minister of the Jammu and Kashmir state, questioned the people criticising the teenager’s decision.

“Who are any of us to question Zaira Wasim’s choices? It’s her life to do with as she pleases,” he said. “All I will do is wish her well and hope that whatever she does makes her happy.”

Film critic Stutee Ghosh told Al Jazeera it was normal for people to be surprised and shocked because Wasim was a “role model, not only for the Kashmiris but even otherwise”.

“At a time when religious fundamentalism is on the rise, choice and agency, especially for women, becomes complicated,” she said.

“One can hope that Zaira has taken the decision on her own and not under any duress.”

Wasim’s third film “The Sky Is Pink”, alongside Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar, is set to release later this year and could be her last appearance in Bollywood.

Review: A Father’s Dreams, Recast by His Daughters in ‘Dangal’

Let it never be said that if you’ve seen one inspirational sports movie, you’ve seen them all.

Sure, Nitesh Tiwari’s Bollywood crowd-pleaser “Dangal” follows a formula: Father abandons his dream of being an international wrestling champion. Father hopes for a son who will live out his dream for him. Father ends up with four daughters.

Father discovers that two of his daughters are dexterous brawlers. Father declares, “From now on, they will only wrestle.” Father trains those daughters, in defiance of the villagers’ tut-tutting and assumptions about women’s roles, to mud wrestle, and instills in them a spirit of feminism.

Wherever “Dangal” goes — a highlight reel might include the older daughter rising from mud wrestling to pro, getting a new coach and beating up her jealous father, who later trains her by couriered video after being barred from the sports academy — it goes there in the maximalist Bollywood style, with emotions set to full blast and its heart firmly on its sleeve.

Based on the true story of Geeta and Babita Phogat (played as children by Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar and as adults by Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra), who eventually competed in the Olympics, and their trainer-father, Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan), the movie benefits from the amount of time it devotes to wrestling strategy. It pays off in suspenseful bouts that haven’t been hyperedited into incoherence, with actresses who really appear to be grappling.

Because this is Bollywood, the training montages are accompanied by sprightly pop music, though not as choreographed song-and-dance numbers. And as goosed as the drama gets (only sports historians can say if Mahavir became trapped in a janitorial closet during the 2010 Commonwealth Games), the uplift feels earned, or at least tough to resist.

Dangal Not rated. In Hindi, with English subtitles. Running time: 2 hours 41 minutes.

Zaira Wasim shares first photo in two years after quitting Bollywood

Zaira wasim, who shot to fame with films such as dangal and secret superstar, had announced in 2019 that she would not be pursuing a career in bollywood anymore..

Former Bollywood actor Zaira Wasim made a rare appearance on her Instagram account. The actor, who shot to fame after films such as Dangal and Secret Superstar, had usually just been posting quotes on the photo-blogging account. In her recent post, Zaira, dressed in a burkha, is walking on a bridge. Her back is turned towards the camera.

She captioned the post, “The warm October sun…”

In 2019, Zaira announced that she would not be acting anymore as she was not happy with her line of work, stating that it interfered with her faith and and religion. Last year, she took to her Instagram handle and requested fans to remove all her photos from social media accounts and not share them. She also added that she was trying to begin a new chapter in her life.

She wrote, “Hello everyone!! I want to just take a moment to thank each of you for the constant love and kindness you have showered me with. Y’all have been a constant source of love and strength, thank you for being there to support me through everything. I request you to please take down my pictures from your accounts and ask other fan pages to do the same.’

Elaborating further, she added, ‘It’s obviously IMPOSSIBLE to get them off the internet but the least I can do is request your pages not to continue sharing them. I hope you could help and support me through this just like you’ve supported me through everything. “I’m trying to start a new chapter in my life and I could really benefit from your cooperation — (like a lot!!). Thank you for being a part of my journey.”

Zaira was noticed after she starred in Dangal, featuring Aamir Khan , which was a tremendous success at the domestic box office as well as overseas. Following this, she starred in Secret Superstar with Aamir again, and her last film was The Sky Is Pink, with Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar.

Zaira Wasim was born in Kashmir, India to Zahid and Zarqa Wasim. Her father works as an Executive Manager in Srinagar and her mother is a teacher. She completed tenth grade from St. Paul's International Academy in Sonwar Bagh, Srinagar for which she scored 92 percent in her Board examinations. She is presently a twelve grade student in the Humanities stream in Jammu’s Heritage School under Central Board of Secondary Education. Zaira made her Bollywood debut in 2016 in the film Dangal which went in to become a major commercial success. She was casted by Aamir Khan when she was aged 14. Her portrayal of the childhood version of the Indian sportswoman Geeta Phogat won her several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2017, she played the lead role in "Secret Superstar". Again opposite Aamir Khan. Her portrayal of a head-strong aspiring singer earned her a nomination for Best Actress and was awarded Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. In November 2017, she was presented with the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement by Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India at a ceremony in New Delhi. Outside of films, she has served as the Youth Ambassador for the 11th edition of the Bengaluru Midnight Marathon in 2017. As of July 2018, she is set to play the role of the motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary, who died at an early age of 18 due to pulmonary fibrosis, in the Shonali Bose's film "The Sky Is Pink" alongside Priyanka Chopra.

Zaira Wasim is an Indian actress who is best known for her playing the role of childhood character of the Indian sportswoman  Geeta Phogat in the popular movie Dangal.  Let’s check out Zaira Wasim’s age, her personal life, career, and other interesting facts.

Biography/Wiki

Zaira Wasim was born on 23 October 2000 (18 years old; age as in 2018). 

She shot to fame for her portrayal of the role of the child version of Geeta Phogat in the movie “Dangal.” Since then there has been no looking back for Zaira Wasim. Her performance in the movie was commercially and critically acclaimed.

Zaira 5′ 1″  tall   & weighs approx 50 kg . She has  black eyes, black hair,  and fair complexion .

Family, Caste & Boyfriend

Zaira Wasim was born and brought up in a Muslim family with Islam ethnicity in Hawal, Downtown, Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir . She is a half Kashmiri and half Punjabi .

She lives with her parents and one younger  brother, Zoraiz Wasim.  Her father, Zahid Wasim, is an Executive Manager of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank while her mother, Zarqa Wasim, is a teacher. She is very close to her father.

She is single  as of now and not dating anyone.

Zaira Wasim completed her schooling from  St. Paul’s International Academy, Sonwar, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir and Jammu’s Heritage School, Jammu & Kashmir . Since her childhood, she was a brilliant student . She scored 92% marks in 10th board examination. As of 2018, she was  pursuing secondary education from  Heritage School, Jammu.

Before entering the Bollywood, she had acted in two television commercials- “ Microsoft Lumia”  and  “Tata Sky .” In 2016, she started her career in Bollywood with the superhit Bollywood movie “ Dangal” in which she played the childhood character of Indian sportsgirl Geeta Phogat .

On 30 June 2019, she announced her disassociation from the glamour world citing religious reasons.

Controversies

• In 2016, Zaira Wasim’s pictures with hair trimmed went viral on the internet. She was criticized and trolled by radical Muslims for having been un-Islamic by acting in a Hindi film.
• In 2016, Zaira had a controversial meeting with the then Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti whereby Mufti had portrayed Zaira as the role model of the Kashmiri youth. Later, Zaira apologized on her social media accounts. However, deleted this apology after some time and added another open letter clarifying everything. Moreover, the subsequent post was yet again deleted.
• On January 2017, the former Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel tweeted that ”This painting tells a story similar to @zairawasim. Pinjra torh kar hamari betiyan barhne lagi hai aage (Our daughters are breaking out of their cages and moving forward) More power to our daughters!”  In reply,  Zaira tweeted “I feel I must disagree. I request you not to connect me to such a discourteous depiction. Women in hijab are beautiful and free. Moreover, the story depicted through this painting is not even remotely relevant to mine.” After that, Goel responded that Zaira had misunderstood his tweet and he appreciated her work and meant to discourage evil and patriarchal notions.
• On 10 December 2017, she was molested on a Vistara flight from Delhi to Mumbai by a 39-year-old man, Vikas Sachdeva, a senior executive of a media and entertainment company. The same day, the Police arrested the accused of molesting her and booked him under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
