The Case Study of Vanitas' Season 1 Finale Leaves So Many Unanswered Questions

The Season 1 finale of The Case Study of Vanitas leaves many burning questions and excels at building up the anticipation for Season 2.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Case Study of Vanitas  Episode 12, “Point of Departure,” now streaming on Funimation .

Although this has been quite an eventful debut season for The Case Study of Vanitas , Episode 12 makes it abundantly clear that all of Season 1 is merely a setup for Season 2, which is already announced to be coming in January 2022 .

The Case Study of Vanitas ' narrative is presented in a way that gradually reveals more information about the world and its characters, thus the entire viewing experience can often feel like piecing a puzzle together, or a build-up to something bigger. What’s really great about the series’ overall structure is there are also clear-cut mini-arcs where the characters take breaks between each adventure before moving on to the next, so it never feels unsatisfying. Episode 12 is technically one of the “break” episodes, but it does much to cleverly build anticipation for Season 2.

The most urgent question from Episode 12 of Vanitas is undoubtedly what happened to Noe. When Vanitas discovers that Ruthven intentionally let Jeanne invite him on a date, he immediately realizes Noe is in danger. But when he returns, he only finds a sleeping Noe half on the floor.

RELATED: My Next Life as a Villainess Season Finale: Katarina Faces a Whole New Otome Challenge

What neither one knows is that Ruthven had already hypnotized Noe and forced him to swear to obey for one time -- no matter what he asks -- and then made Noe forget this vow.  Episode 11 showed Jeanne under some kind of order but she can’t remember who made it, so this seems like the exact same situation for Noe. This is the biggest potential time bomb that may explode in Season 2. There is no telling what Ruthven will ask, and worse yet, there's no way to prevent it because no one actually realizes its existence.

The Season 1 finale also reveals that Ruthven planned to kill Noe at first, but changed his mind due to the concern over Noe’s teacher, the Shapeless One. This suggests the Shapeless One -- whom Ruthven calls a monster -- may be at least equal to or even more powerful than Ruthven. That said, the dialogue here also hints that leaving Noe alive could be Ruthven’s biggest downfall in the future.

Another unpredictable factor in The Case Study of Vanitas is Roland, who now knows not all vampires are evil like he was led to believe by the church. His colleague Olivier senses he is starting to doubt the church’s teachings and clumsily threatens to harm his family, but Roland returns the gesture with an even more thinly veiled threat. Their conversation shows how powerful Roland truly is  -- according to his own estimation, he can take on four or more paladins at once. But his mind may be even more dangerous; he is not a blind believer of God, but rather what he believes to be true. This makes him a wild card who could be on any side of a fight.

Most importantly, the Season 1 finale sets up the next adventure for Vanitas and Noe: the “Beast of Gevaudan” (a real-life murderous creature in French history), a wolf-like beast that used to brutally murder women and children and has recently reemerged to kill five people. The beast is theorized to be a curse-bearing vampire, and as we saw in Episode 6 , when a cursed vampire is too far gone, their appearance will change to a beast-like creature. Vanitas and Noe leave Paris to investigate, a great way to conclude Season 1 since the series began with both of them coming into Paris.

But the most intriguing reveal about this beast is at the end credit scene, when a white-haired girl appears in the snowy mountains with the Charlatan holding her. She claims to want to make her vengeance echo across the land in Gevaudan. This means the beast is definitely connected to the Charlatan, who seems to be controlled or is at least allied with this mysterious girl, whose name is Chloe according to the credits. This is the biggest revelation of Episode 12, and leaves the most unanswered questions. Given  The Case Study of Vanitas ' penchant for slowly resolving mysteries , it will probably take an entire season for everything to be fully resolved.

There are many other smaller set-ups too, such as the introduction of a new pink-haired character named Astolfo, who, despite looking effeminate, is male. There's also Noe’s strange obsession with Vanitas’ blood, and a full exposition of Noe’s mind-reading power that will surely become important later on. All these questions and more will hopefully be answered in The Case Study of Vanitas Season 2.

English Dub Review: The Case Study of Vanitas “His Wish”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Despite Mikhail’s pleas, Vanitas refuses to end Noe’s life even though he drank his blood. Mikhail can’t seem to understand this kind of affection, and orders Domi to jump. But she finds inner strength she didn’t know she had and resists. The Shapeless One appears and reveals itself as the reason Mikhail believes Luna can be resurrected. There’s a massive explosion and when Noe wakes up the next day, Vanitas is finally ready to be genuine.

The Case Study of Vanitas is the kind of show that can be expected to go out with a big bang in the most extreme, dramatic way possible. And the final episode, His Wish , does that—at least in the literal sense of the word. There’s an explosion big enough to jump the timeline ahead by a day. Narratively, I’m less sure that the ep succeeds is this way, but let’s get into it.

Last episode left us on a bit of a cliffhanger as Vanitas leaps at Noe with a knife. We find out right away in the finale that Vanitas can’t bring himself to kill Noe, even if his ‘little brother’ is demanding it. This sets the base for the main emotional arc of the finale, which is that Vanitas is finally admitting that he cares about Noe. It’s one of the things that I think the episode does well, which is to connect all the dots and bring us back to the underlying tension between the two of them and wrap that up—at least as much as I expected. Of course there’s no outright romance between the two, despite all the hinting and subtext, because this show doesn’t have the guts to do that.

Speaking of bravery, Mikhail displays a bit of unexpected spunk in the latter half of the episode, returning to Vanitas on the roof to just ask him straight up what happened to Luna. Vanitas tells him the truth, which is that he killed Luna before the curse could take effect. That’s why he’s devoted his life to curing curse-bearers, because he wants to find the one who stole Luna’s true name. Is it an unexpected revelation? No. Do I still hate Mikhail? Yes, he’s the worst kind of anime villain. But this did redeem him a little, I guess.

Another thing I really liked was Domi being able to find the strength inside her to stand up for herself and be her own best hero. The show doesn’t have a great track record with how it treats its female characters, and Domi has felt a bit like she only exists to be a bargaining chip of late, but her inner transformation into a warrior was cool.

At the end, the finale leaves us with unanswered questions about what’s really going on with the Shapeless One and exactly what it is after. I guess that’s just a tease for another season. As unsatisfying as that may be, we do get a great Vanitas/Noe moment and the show ends with our heroes sitting on the rooftop as they stare into the rising sun. The concluding chapter may not have been as suitably epic as I was hoping, but it did have its moments.

Season Review: Velma Season Two

Ulf Claesson-

Why is a third season unlikely? The first season, for all the hatred it got (and I liked it!), attracted quite a huge audience, a substantial part of which is likely to return (to bitch and moan if nothing else, even though this season seems to be getting much better reviews.. so far), so unless the viewership for season two plummets (which is unlikely, as many will have a morbid curiosity in seeing how this season turn out) I think a third season is quite likely. And as I said, I liked season one. So bring it on. You know, I think this incarnation of the show actually will grow into a cult classic in years to come, pretty much like Mystery Inc has (no comparison, just pointing out that it, too, was met with less than enthusiasm at first, something which has definitely changed in recent years.)

Appearance [ ]

Veronica takes the appearance of a pale, silver haired young woman, though the story's timeline suggests she is older than she appears. She has a very feminine figure, with a large bust and hips and small waist. Her face is long, beautiful, and mature, with a small pointed chin, a small nose, large lips, thin eyebrows and angular eyes with especially long lashes. Unique to her design, her pupils are shaped like crosses. Though Veronica is of European descent, her design draws from Japanese aesthetics. Her hair is cut in a hime style, with check-length side bangs and a straight cut frontal fringe. It is also exceptionally long, cut straight and going down to her thighs.

In her first appearance during the Bal Masqué, she wears a costume inspired by Japanese dress and mythology, though historically and culturally inaccurate. Her outfit is styled after a lightly colored furisode, patterned with clouds and plants. She has a multi-textile obi tied just beneath her bust. Unlike legitimate kimono, Veronica's clothing rests pasts her shoulders and exposes cleavage, as well as having an obi that is tied in the front. In addition, the lower half of her dress takes a mermaid style and has frills at its split and ends. Her outfit seems to be inspired by myths of kitsune, suggested by her mask, which was black and painted to resemble fox masks traditionally worn in Japan, and by the presence of several fluffy "tails" at the back of her dress. Other accessories to this outfit were a flower hairpin, a rope-like necklace with a tassel, and a black fan.

Later, while speaking to Dominique in their home, she wears only a pale bath robe with loose sleeves. This robe was secured with a belt at the waist, but Veronica showed no concern for properly covering herself. As such, the robe's shoulders sat on her forearms, exposing her cleavage. When sitting down and crossing her legs, the split along Veronica's robe would expose her thigh. She smoked from a long pipe resembling a kiseru .

Personality [ ]

Veronica appears to have an extreme misandry, hating men in a general sense and often speaking of them in disgust. Even more, Veronica also appears to hate humans, having found the fact that Vanitas was a male and a human utterly detestable. In terms of personality, Veronica seems to have a particular liking toward torture, which is evident by the collar Dominique had obtained from her and the iron maiden and wheel of death present among numerous other torture devices in the De Sade booth at the Machina estate. This, alongside her intent to kill without a second thought, suggests that Veronica is a rather cold and malicious individual.

Bal Masqué Arc [ ]

Having attended Marquis Machina's Bal Masqué, Veronica de Sade suddenly hears the party turn into an uproar as the Vampires in attendance demand the head of Vanitas. The crowd then falls silent as Veronica pushes her way through the crowd, explaining that she was wondering what all the fuss was about, questioning what a human was doing in Altus - and not only a human, but a man - with Veronica claiming that the stench of a human is so strong that her nose may just drop off.

Veronica then calls upon Marquis Machina - the host of the Bal Masqué - demanding that he dispose of Vanitas. When Machina objects, being fascinated by Vanitas and wanting to study him further, Veronica takes it upon herself to dispose of him and readies herself for the attack. Unexpectedly, a sword flies through the air and cuts through the cord holding up the chandelier, sending it and Vanitas plummeting to the ground. However, upon impact the Vampires find that Vanitas has disappeared. Veronica asks Machina about what she'd just seen, with Machina confirming that someone had snatched Vanitas away in the blink of an eye. Intrigued, Veronica rallies the Vampires together, noting that Vanitas is still lurking somewhere and initializing a human hunt in order to make like their predecessors and destroy the human that would otherwise do them harm; much to Marquis Machina's chagrin.

As Veronica organizes the hunting party, a vile and eerie arrangement of music begins to resound throughout the ballroom, making many of the Vampires in attendance fall ill within moments of hearing the melody. Just then, all the unwell Vampires become violent and begin attacking the other Vampires in attendance, revealing themselves to be Curse-Bearers, much to Veronica's surprise. In the meantime, Veronica and Marquis Machina leave the scene - with Veronica asking if the Curse-Bearers' voices had something to do with this, while Machina reviews how troublesome the situation has become.

Veronica later comes across Dominique fighting alongside Vanitas and Noé Archiviste. Upon noticing Veronica, Dominique hurries the two along to save the final Curse-Bearer before Veronica can intervene. Veronica then confronts her younger sister, asking what she was doing with "the human male", earning a casual greeting from Dominique.

Some time after, Veronica sparring with Dominique and incapacitated her, binding and hanged Dominique on the ceiling. Then, Veronica searching found Noe and Vanitas. Pleased to have them in her sights, Veronica attacks Noé and Vanitas with her power to conjure and control ice.

Powers and Abilities [ ]

See also: Vampires

  • Cryokinesis - Veronica possesses the ability to alter formulae slightly, allowing her to conjure and control ice, which she is shown shaping into spiked pillars, as well as levitating blocks of ice, and freezing individuals.
  • Eyes - Veronica is described as having "exceptional eyes," which allow her to "see" and edit the World Formula with extreme proficiency even while having limited vision.

Relationships [ ]

Dominique de sade [ ].

Veronica sees Dominique as the family failure, and is always entertained by Dominique’s lack of knowledge about the family and squeamishness when it comes to romance. She is often verbally abusive towards Domi and was a contributor to Dominique’s decision to try to become Louis, yet was shown to be surprised when she witnesses Domi's despaired act of cutting off her hair.

Vanitas [ ]

Being a human, and a man no less, Veronica detests Vanitas and attacks him for intruding in the Bal Masqué. To eliminate him, she orders a human hunt. Vanitas holds a similar scorn for Veronica and taunts her.

August Ruthven [ ]

Veronica dislikes Ruthven, glaring at him when he interrupts her human hunt and calling him an “eyesore” when speaking with Domi. Despite this, she seems to respect his power— she immediately stops attacking Vanitas and calms down when he splits her mask.

Marquis Machina [ ]

Veronica and Marquis Machina have a casual relationship involving sex and drinking each other’s blood. Veronica, when asked by Domi, describes their time together as a fling.

Antoine de Sade [ ]

Antoine and Veronica seem to get along well, despite not spending much time together.

This is one possible translation of a quote attributed to the real life Marquis de Sade, usually translated as, "Sexual pleasure is, I agree, a passion to which all others are subordinate but in which they all unite." This confirms the fictional head of the de Sade family to be directly based on the Marquis de Sade.
  • In her first appearance, Veronica dons an outfit inspired by Japanese culture through her kimono and hand-fan, her outfit inspired by the kitsune - a Japanese trickster spirit often appearing as a nine-tailed fox.
