Undergraduate, Masters, or Volunteer Research Assistants

Duties of Research Assistants

A Research Assistant position in the lab is ideal for enthusiastic, hard-working, and very organized students who are interested in obtaining research experiences in child and adolescent clinical psychology and are specifically interested in the research areas of the Hamilton lab. 

Research Assistants participate each week in lab tasks across the full spectrum of the research process. These tasks include: collecting, entering, and managing data; working with research participants; completing readings; developing surveys; assisting with the development of community outreach materials; social media dissemination; participating actively in lab meetings; and completing various lab-related administrative tasks as instructed.

This research training experience is ideal for students who are interested in pursuing research, including research or clinical positions after college or graduate school in Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Public Health, or related fields . Qualifications for Research Assistants

Students must be able to commit at least 6 hours of lab work each week, though we encourage students to work 9 hours each week when possible.   We prioritize applicants who can dedicate at least 2 academic semesters in the lab. Senior theses will only be considered after working in the lab for at least 1 semester.

Work will be in person for the academic 2024-25 year. It is essential that RAs have access to a computer (or similar device) with video and stable internet. If this is a problem for you, please let us know how you will be able to accommodate work in the "Other information you want us to know" section of the application. 

Please note that prior research experience is NOT a requirement. Being hard-working, organized, proactive, and motivated to conduct research in our lab is a requirement. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work well as part of a team is a must.

Research Assistant I - Public Health/Health Sciences (Student/Work Study)

To be considered for this position, candidates must attach a cover letter as the first page of your resume. The cover letter should address your specific interest in the position and outline skills and experience that directly relates to the qualifications of this position.  A writing sample, such as a paper you wrote for a class, should be attached with the cover letter and resume.

The University of Michigan-Flint is seeking an undergraduate student as a Research Assistant I (Temporary).  This student will join the research team with a two professors, the undergraduate student and graduate students.  This study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where you will conduct research to understand adolescents' perspectives on improving telehealth (remote care such as video and telephone healthcare visits).

This position is from May 2024 through April 31, 2025 for approximately 10 hours per week. 

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Conduct literature reviews to develop expertise in the area of telehealth
• Participate in mock interviews to prepare for the actual interviews
• Schedule, conduct (with another researcher),and take notes during video interviews
• Engage in writing summaries
• Serve as a co-author of presentations
• Be trained on, and assist in, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data
• Attend workshops on qualitative research
• Present research findings at local conference(s)
• Potential to present at a National conference
• Travel to/from pediatrician offices to invite them to participate, place flyers and recruit participants

Required Qualifications*

• Current undergraduate student in good standing with the University of Michigan-Flint 
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Interest in research, particularly pediatrics and telehealth
• Ability to travel to/from pediatrician offices with reliable transportation
• Available at least 10 hours per week

Desired Qualifications*

• Prior research experience 
• Familiarity with Qualtrics 
• Experience with quantitative data analysis software such as SPSS and Microsoft Excel
• Must have the ability to work independently on projects
• Demonstrate the ability to respect confidentiality
