Why entrust your speech writing to an expert?

Like in any other area of life, if you want something to be done well, it's best to hire a professional. When it comes to speech composition, a speechwriter can reinforce your message, make you sound more convincing, and help you grab the audience's attention. Here are the key reasons to consider speech writers for hire:

  • Your writing skills leave much to be desired. It is hardly possible to craft an impressive speech without superior writing skills and the ability to pick the right words for any situation. Our speech writers have delivered thousands of speeches and know from practice what it takes to put together a speech that makes the audience listen and take notice.
  • You don't have enough expertise or subject proficiency. If you have to give a professional or college speech but the subject is new to you, you'll struggle to persuade the audience. Similarly, if you do not write wedding or retirement speeches regularly, you'll hardly come up with an excellent one at the first attempt. Our in-house experts are familiar with every speech type, from political to amusement ones. They can make your speech shine and help you wow the audience.
  • You're not sure how to organize your thoughts. Are you full of ideas, but once you write them down, your text is difficult to follow? No worries. Our ghostwriters know the successful formulas of different speech types, and will apply them to make your text both concise and persuasive.
  • You want to inspire and impress the audience without much effort. Writing a successful speech takes time that many students and professionals do not have. Why not ease your life and outsource this important task to an expert? Our ghostwriters stay in touch with you online anytime it's convenient to you, and keep working on your speech until it satisfies you and effectively conveys your point.

At SpeechPaths, we craft customized speeches for professionals, students, and people preparing for an important event. We guarantee that your speech paper will be plagiarism-free and tailored to your goals. Contact us today, and let's discuss how we can make your presentation shine!

Reach your goals with a powerful, persuasive speech

Our team uses a personalized approach, considering your unique situation and the context in which you'll be giving the speech. On top of that, we take care of all aspects of speech preparation so you could only practice and give that speech once the day X comes:

  • the writer considers your event and the audience, using professional slang if necessary, or plain words and humor for a personal event. They pick the right words and tone of voice so that the speech is understandable for everyone;
  • our experts logically structure the speech, introducing your ideas in an easy-to-understand manner so that your text is easy to follow;
  • we make each speech informative, meaning that it has plenty of information from credible sources and valuable insights;
  • our speeches appeal not only to logic but also to the emotional side of your audience. We make each speech vivid and eloquent so that it touches the hearts of those present;
  • we guarantee timely and fast delivery of each custom speech so that you could memorize it and practice delivering it to the audience.

Our experts take your type of assignment into account for a perfect result. If you need a business speech, they will base it on important facts, findings, and crucial information for decision-making. For political and oratorical speeches, they will come up with powerful statements, facts that inspire, and expressions and stories that build trust. And in the case with personal event speeches, we will use a theme or a personal story while preserving your unique voice. We have a solution for every client - contact us to discuss how we can help you today!

How much does it cost to hire a speechwriter?

Unlike many speech writing services, we do not charge per word and keep our prices fair. Our services are accessible to everyone, including students. The price of your order will depend on the following parameters:

  • how long your speech should be (in words/pages, 275 words per page);
  • the deadline of your order (the fastest deadline is 12 hours, but you can order a month in advance and save a lot);
  • additional options with your speech, such as PowerPoint slides or answers to questions;
  • you can also choose one of our Top 10 writers who are most experienced and have a 5-star rating with our clients.

As a student, you can also indicate your academic level, and the writer will adjust the language. Our company is fully remote, so we keep our prices lower than our competitors. Order your first speech with a 20% discount and experience all advantages of working with an expert.

Writing help of any kind is available here

In addition to writing speeches, our extensive team can assist with all kinds of writing projects, including:

  • academic essays
  • research papers
  • case studies
  • business reports
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • creative essays, and many more.

Our in-house writers are familiar with different types of writing and specialize in various subject matter areas. We will connect you with an expert who is just perfect for completing your task with brilliance.

How to give an excellent speech that captivates the audience?

Some people have a natural talent for delivering speeches. You can become one of these people, too - just follow this advice to give a great speech:

Practice delivering your speech in front of the mirror or to a friend. Pay attention to your body language and gestures. Also, consider your manner of speaking such issues as speaking too fast or too quietly can spoil the entire impression from your speech.

Standing too close to the microphone can deafen your audience, plus, they will hear you breathing and lots of other noises. If you stand far away, they will hardly hear you. Practice working with a microphone in advance to avoid an awkward situation.

If you are not an experienced speaker, maintaining eye contact can be challenging. Try this: choose a point on the opposite wall or the middle of the room that you will look at, and speak at that point. Thus, you'll be able to focus on your speech entirely.

Including PowerPoint slides in your presentation is not necessary. Only use them if they share something new with the audience - for example, photos, graphs and charts, and other details that illustrate your point. If your slides repeat your words, it's best to skip them.

Crafting an attention-grabbing speech has many nuances that you might not be aware of. To make a brilliant impression on your coworkers, clients, professors, or family, get help from a professional speechwriter. They will find the right words to get your message across in every situation.

"It seemed crazy to have someone compose my wedding speech. But once I received the first draft, I was beyond impressed - the writer managed to reflect my writing style, and included a couple of heartwarming stories that made this speech really special. Hire a Speechwriter for Your Special Occasion

Speechwriters can provide you with a memorable speech, allowing you to deliver an effective message for numerous occasions.

Benefits of Hiring a Speechwriter.

Do you have a speech coming up?  Whether it’s a press announcement, a public speaking engagement, or even a wedding toast, you can take it to the next level when you hire a credible speechwriter.

Speech writing conveys a message by capturing the audience with words and emotion.  Speeches should have organized ideas, a compelling message, and perhaps even some humor to keep the audience engaged.

Why You Should Hire a Speechwriter

Hiring a speechwriter (often searched as “hire a speech writer”) allows you to better interact with your audience, and if necessary, move them to take action in the direction you desire.

There are many other reasons you may be looking for a speechwriter for hire, including:

  • Lack of writing proficiency
  • Lack of subject knowledge
  • Inability to organize your thoughts

We can help write your next speech.  Let’s get started!

Speechwriter Topics

Every day there are thousands of speeches given across the world.  Business leaders present ideas to build profits,  politicians discuss agendas and perspectives, and an everyday maid of honor hopes to wow a wedding crowd with well-thought-out relatable memories.

Additionally, speechwriters can write speeches for a celebrity spokesperson advertising a product or service, public positions for nonprofit organizations, award winners, graduation ceremonies, keynote speakers, and much more.

Overall, there’s no limit to speechwriter topics.  The objective is to find the best speechwriter for hire to suit your needs.

Working with a Speechwriter

The best speechwriters know how to quickly build rapport with their clients.  When you hire a freelance speechwriter (which could be searched as “hire a speech writer), it’s important to note that they are professionals who have established processes.

First, you should expect the writer to ask many questions about the event.  Detail is key to ensuring the audience doesn’t question the authenticity of the speech.

Next, the writer will help the speaker with their original ideas and from an outside perspective considering others.  How does the speaker want the audience to react? How does the audience relate to the material? You and your writer want the speech to be perfect, so it’s essential to collaborate on the substance of the address.

Finally, you should be ready for the writer to be straightforward.  The writer decides how the material should be used and presented.   With some creative writing skills and a clear understanding of the audience’s perspective , these ideas are turned into a speech.

How to Perfect Your Speech

You have hired a superb speechwriter and received your speech.  How do you turn that speech into a room of applause?

You need to sell it! Before you step on stage, you need to practice.  Read your speech aloud, grab a book or object for focus, and most importantly emote and move around while you speak.

A forgotten trick involves trying tongue twisters .  This is shown to improve speech clarity as you speak more clearly.

There are other tips to perfect your speech, such as speaking into a mirror or recording yourself as you practice.

Our highly respected writers will work with you to understand the purpose, audience demographic, and natural environment for your speech.  By doing this, you are assured that the written address is genuine and profound.

Are you looking for that memorable speech?  Our expert freelance speechwriters can put together a piece that will make you feel confident.  Partner with Textbroker and hire a speechwriter today!

“ I USED THE PRESENTATION THAT YOU WROTE FOR US FOR A WEBINAR WE HAD LAST MONTH AND WE HAD THE BEST SALES MONTH THAT WE’VE HAD IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS! AND, WE GOT A TON OF GREAT FEEDBACK FROM IT! I BELIEVE THAT A BIG FACTOR IN THE SUCCESS WAS THE PRESENTATION THAT YOU CREATED FOR US. THANK YOU AGAIN! ”

Tanisha souza ceo & chief wealth coach, tardus wealth strategie, moxie’s speech writing process, copywriting to give you an unforgettable speech, the goal: identify your one big idea your time investment: 1-hour vision call.

Our first goal is simple: to find out what your talk is all about. We’ll focus on two questions: What’s the one big idea the audience should take away? And how will your main points support it? If you’d like, you can go ahead and start sketching these ideas ahead of our vision call!

THE OUTLINE

The goal: finalize the structure of your talk turnaround: typically 5-7 days your time investment: 1-2 hours to review & revise.

After our vision work, your speechwriter or copywriter will assemble it all into the structure of a compelling talk. We’ll then send you a detailed outline to review, revise, and fill in as needed. This step is crucial: it’s our chance to ensure the talk has everything it should. We’ll be leaning on you to supply the necessary details and stories (since you’re the only one who’s got them!). You can provide those however you’d like: bullet points, stream-of-consciousness Word docs, haiku, audio notes, a phone call.. whatever is easiest and stress-free for you!

Remember, there’s no need for you to say anything well at this point. Eloquence is optional here (since that’s what you’re paying us for!)… our first aim is to make sure we’re saying everything that needs to be said.

And because we’ll use the outline to write the speech itself, now’s the time to get it right: we can always restructure the talk later, but once we’ve agreed on the outline and we’ve produced a couple of drafts, it gets expensive to overhaul the core of the talk. In sum, the outline is our moment to capture your vision. Everything afterward will be about capturing your voice.

THE FIRST DRAFT

The goal: finalize the structure of your talk our speech writers turnaround: 1-1.5 weeks your time investment: up to you (1 hour average).

Just like a painter makes sketches before the final work, our next step is to sketch out the speech, script, or story line-by-line.

Think of the first draft as halfway between the outline and the final script. It’s less “say these words here” and more “say something like this here.”

How much time copy editing will you spend on this draft? It’s up to you! Some clients like to work and rework the language back and forth; most are happy enough to run with just a few changes.

THE GOAL: COMPLETE THE SPEECH AND MAKE IT UNFORGETTABLE TURNAROUND: 1-1.5 WEEKS YOUR TIME INVESTMENT: SIT BACK AND RELAX

At last, the final speech: expertly formatted and ready for you to memorize or (if it’s absolutely necessary) read from the stage.

Now’s the time to celebrate how your time and attention have paid off. Congrats, you made your dreams come to life!

Praise for our best speech writers

Our clients are never left speechless. Here are a few things they have to say about working with our professional speech writers. ( Read more testimonials here. )

Severine Petras – convocation speaker

Geoff – satisfied groom from british columbia, krystal – satisfied maid of honor from illinois, aaron – best man from california, why people hire a freelance speech writer.

Why do people hire a speech writer? They are not good at writing. They are not used to speaking. They don’t know where to start. They want to sound professional. They are too busy to write the speech.

Whether public speaking excites you or terrifies you, whether you are a novice or an old pro, we can write your speech.

Speakers hire ghostwriters when they are not good at writing.

The most obvious reason to hire a speechwriter is if you are not good at writing. That is an excellent reason. You have been asked to speak because you are an expert at something. Unless you are speaking at a writers conference, you were probably not chosen for your writing expertise.

You bring the knowledge of the topic. We bring the words you’ll need to communicate. That’s why you hire a writer for your speech. The best speech writer finds your voice.

People like you hire speech ghostwriters when they are not used to speaking.

Even if you are a good writer, you might not be used to public speaking. Writing a speech is not like writing a letter. It’s worth hiring a speechwriter, because he knows how to write a speech.

It’s not just for his expertise that you might want to hire a speech writer. It might also be for your own confidence. Knowing that you have a solid speech to deliver means that you can walk up to the lectern with confidence.

The less familiar or comfortable you are with public speaking, the more important practice will be. Your speechwriter will make sure you get a draft on time, so that you can practice. Many people who write their own speeches procrastinate. That leaves little time for practice. Needless to say, those speeches and presentations tend to be less effective.

Speakers like you hire speechwriters when they don’t know where to start.

You might want to hire a speechwriter because you don’t know where to start. In fact, that’s one reason people hire writers in many situations.

We are used to writing speeches. We know where to start. We can take that burden from your shoulders.

Speakers hire professional speechwriters when they want to sound more professional.

Perhaps the best reason to hire a professional speech writer is to sound more professional or to be more effective. A good speech is made of many things:

  • a worthwhile message
  • a well-written speech
  • a strong delivery
  • an interested audience

It starts with a worthwhile message. That’s up to you. Then, you need someone to write a speech that will communicate that message. The rest is up to you, but freelance speech writers can take you that far.

  • A sample of our speech writing skills – commencement speech
  • A sample of our speech writing skills – motivational speech

Speakers hire freelance speechwriters when they are too busy to write it themselves.

You might be busy. In fact, if you have been asked to speak, it’s probably because you do a lot. If you wait for the last minute to draft your speech, it won’t be nearly as good.

Hiring a professional speechwriter is a great way to get your speech written while you do other things. You won’t have to worry about details, such as:

  • fretting over words
  • structuring the speech
  • fitting in enough details
  • avoiding too much detail
  • worrying about timing or cadence

You will want to tweak the speech as you practice. But the bulk of the work will be done by the time you get the first draft.

How to work with a speech writer

Your speech will be most effective if you work with your speechwriter. Take the time to give the information they need.

What should you tell your speech writer? How fast you speak Your speaking style How you use humor What you want to say How you want the audience to feel What you want the audience to do

Tell your freelance speech writer how fast you speak.

There are two ways to measure the length of a speech. The most obvious is by time. You will be speaking for five minutes or ten minutes or 30 minutes.

Some speeches over 20 minutes get more complicated. A keynote speech is usually straightforward. A 30-minute speech lasts 30 minutes. But a 30-minute conference presentation might last only 20 minutes. That’s because you might need to reserve ten minutes for questions at the end.

The other way to measure the length of a speech is by word count. This might be of no concern to a speaker, but if you want to work with a speech writer, it is pretty important. Your speech writer needs to know how many words to write. That also affects how much we need to charge you.

A 20-minute speech would need just 1,600 words if you speak at 80 words per minute. That same speech would need 3,000 words spoken at 150 words per minute.

How fast do you speak? If you are unaccustomed to public speaking, you probably speak on the fast side. That’s what nerves do to many novice speakers. It’s worth trying to control the pace of your speaking, so that your audience can process what you say.

In the absence of other information, we assume a speaking pace of 100 words per minute.

Tell your professional speech writer about your speaking style.

This is important for a freelance speechwriter to know.

Do you like to explain things in detail?

Do you prefer to make emphatic points?

Do you like to ask questions of the audience and get them to raise their hands or shout out answers?

Do you prefer to speak directly to the audience, or do you prefer to have them stare at a screen of graphs and data?

Do you like to make points by telling stories?

The best speech writer finds your style. What’s your style?

Work with your speech writer on humor.

Humor is a touchy subject. A speech without humor is often very dry. But a speech that sounds like it is supposed to be funny, but isn’t, could prove to be a flop.

How much humor your speechwriter includes, and what type of humor, depends on you. What type of humor do you use in real life? Dry humor? Puns? Longer jokes? It’s best to carry your real-life style of humor into your presentation.

Tell your speech writer how you want the audience to feel.

At the end of the day, how do you want the audience to feel? Your freelance speechwriter can write words that will make the audience feel:

  • heartbroken
  • whatever you want them to feel

Whether tears of joy or just in tears, let your ghostwriter know how you want to leave your audience feeling.

Tell your speech ghostwriter exactly what you want the audience to do.

Whatever your audience feels at the end of the speech, once they leave the room, you are no longer in control. What do you want them to do with the information you gave them?

Maybe nothing. You might not want your audience to do anything after you’ve spoken. You might just have been there to entertain them. Or to present information, with no particular goal.

But if you want the audience to do something to change the world, to change their lives or to change their businesses, make sure to tell them. Be direct. Tell them what you want them to do. At very least, have them leave the room with that call to action as their last thought.

This is an important point you’ll want your speech writer to include.

Ideally, you can follow up your speech with some form of communication once they return to their natural habitats. Back in real life, a reminder of your message will be more effective even than closing your speech with a call to action.

How to perfect your speech

You’ve hired a professional speech writer. You have the speaking notes in front of you. How do you turn the written speech into that barn burner that brings the audience to its feet or moves them to tears?

  • Be yourself.

Come prepared.

Speak to a mirror.

Record your voice.

Look them in the eye.

Volume speaks volumes.

  • Practice, practice, practice.

Variety is the spice of public speaking.

Practice your speech.

No matter what you do, you’ll do it better after practicing. The more you practice, the better you’ll do it. That goes double for public speaking.

When you practice, make sure to vary your words slightly. Why? Because if you deliver the same line a dozen times, each time with a slightly different wording, here’s what you will memorize:

  • the idea you want to communicate
  • all the words you’ll need to express the idea
  • not the exact words

The result is that the words will flow more naturally from your mouth. They will sound less memorized. You will be less dependent on staring at the paper in front of you, and more able to look at the people you are talking to.

Watch how you look when you speak. Make sure your mouth is moving. Keep your posture. Don’t fiddle with your hands. Practice emphatic gestures. We communicate a lot with our bodies, so make sure your body is communicating the same thing as your words.

After practicing for a while, record your voice. Play it back to see how you sound.

Make sure that people can hear you. With a microphone, that’s not an issue. But, will there be a microphone? It’s best to make sure.

Even with a microphone, some people don’t speak loud enough or clearly enough. If your audience has difficulty hearing you or understanding your words, they’ll find it even tougher to understand your message.

Loud is good. But not all the time. Sometimes, you need to raise your voice to a crescendo for emphasis. Other times, lowering your voice to almost a whisper will get their attention even better. You should do both.

You should also vary the pace of speaking. There are times for speaking fast. There are times for speaking slow. There are times to pause for emphasis, especially when you want the audience to think about a question you just asked or a new idea you have just suggested.

Make sure there is water at the lectern. You don’t want your speech hijacked by a dry throat.

The other thing you don’t want to happen during your speech is the sudden need to visit the washroom. Empty shortly before the speech.

When you speak with friends or colleagues, do you look over their heads? Of course not. Look people in the eye as you speak. You don’t have to look at any one person for more than a few seconds. Some speakers make eye contact with one person for a whole sentence, then switch to somebody else for the next sentence.

Be yourself…only better.

Most important is to be yourself. Let your personality shine through. Don’t try out humor from the podium that would not be your style in real life. Don’t adopt a speaking style at the lectern that is radically different than how you would explain things in a meeting room or church basement. Speechwriting is about putting you on paper, so that you can shine in person.

Well I have to thank you again and the speech was fantastic. As you can imagine the flow was great and must admit I did a pretty good job delivering our speech. I’m very happy that I decided to go with a “writer” service and very happy that you wrote the words.

Thank you again and should I need writing expertise in the future you can be assured I will be calling upon your services.

What is a Speechwriter?

A speechwriter specializes in creating speeches for clients, usually for politicians, executives, or public figures. The primary responsibility of a speechwriter is to craft a compelling message that effectively communicates the speaker's ideas, values, and objectives to the audience. This requires not only exceptional writing skills but also the ability to understand the speaker's personality, voice, and audience's expectations, as well as the context of the speech.

Speechwriters typically work closely with their clients to understand their goals, message, and audience. They research the topic, gather data and information, and write a draft speech, which they then edit and refine until it meets the speaker's needs. This involves creating an outline, selecting the right words, tone, and structure, and ensuring the speech is well-organized and coherent. In some cases, speechwriters may also assist in rehearsing and delivering the speech, providing feedback and guidance to the speaker to ensure they deliver the message effectively.

What does a Speechwriter do?

A businessman sitting with a speechwriter, going over the written speech.

Speechwriters are valuable assets in any organization or public figure's communication team because they possess the expertise to craft well-written, impactful speeches that can inspire, persuade, and inform the audience. They can help ensure that the message is communicated clearly and effectively, and that the tone and style of the speech match the speaker's personality and objectives.

Speechwriters also have the ability to research and understand the audience, tailoring the content to their specific needs and interests. In addition, they can help their clients save time and reduce stress by taking on the task of writing and editing the speech, allowing the speaker to focus on delivering it with confidence and passion.

Duties and Responsibilities The following are some of the key duties and responsibilities of a speech writer:

  • Research: Before writing a speech, a speech writer must conduct research on the topic to ensure that they have a deep understanding of the subject matter. This may involve reading relevant articles, books, and reports, as well as conducting interviews with subject matter experts. The speech writer must also research the audience to ensure that the speech is tailored to their interests, knowledge level, and cultural background. In addition, they may research the occasion or event to ensure that the speech is appropriate for the setting and tone.
  • Writing: After completing the research, the speech writer must craft the speech in a clear, concise, and engaging manner. They must use language and tone that is appropriate for the audience and occasion, and convey the message in a compelling way. The speech writer must also consider the length of the speech, as well as any visual aids or other materials that may be used during the presentation.
  • Editing: Once the speech is written, the speech writer must proofread and edit it for clarity, grammar, and tone. They may also seek feedback from others, such as the speaker or a trusted colleague, to ensure that the speech is effective and persuasive.
  • Collaboration: Throughout the process, the speech writer must work closely with the speaker or client to ensure that the speech aligns with their vision and goals. This may involve multiple rounds of revisions and feedback, as well as ongoing communication to ensure that the speech is on track.
  • Delivery: In some cases, the speech writer may be responsible for coaching the speaker on delivery techniques. This may include providing guidance on pacing, inflection, and body language to ensure that the speech is delivered in a confident and engaging manner.
  • Feedback: Finally, the speech writer may be asked to solicit feedback from the audience or client to help improve future speeches. This may involve collecting surveys, conducting interviews, or analyzing social media and other feedback channels to identify areas for improvement.

Types of Speechwriters Here are some common types of speechwriters and what they do:

  • Political Speechwriters: These speechwriters work for political leaders such as presidents, governors, and senators. They are responsible for creating speeches that communicate the leader's vision, policy proposals, and political platform.
  • Corporate Speechwriters: These speechwriters work for companies and executives, crafting speeches that address stakeholders, shareholders, and employees. They may write speeches for product launches, shareholder meetings, and corporate events.
  • Non-profit Speechwriters: These speechwriters work for non-profit organizations and charities, creating speeches that communicate the organization's mission, goals, and accomplishments.
  • Freelance Speechwriters: These speechwriters work independently and are hired by individuals, businesses, and organizations to write speeches for specific events or occasions.

What is the workplace of a Speechwriter like?

The workplace of a speechwriter can vary depending on the organization they work for and the nature of their job. Generally, a speechwriter is responsible for crafting speeches and presentations that will be delivered by high-profile individuals, such as politicians, CEOs, or public figures. This can be a challenging and high-pressure role, as the quality of their work can have a significant impact on the reputation and success of the speaker.

In some cases, speechwriters may work directly for the individual they are writing for, such as a politician or CEO. In these situations, the workplace of the speechwriter may be within the same office or building as their client. They may attend meetings, events, and speeches with their client to gather information and ensure their writing is aligned with the speaker's messaging and tone.

In other cases, speechwriters may work for an agency or consulting firm, where they may have multiple clients across various industries. These speechwriters may work remotely or in a traditional office setting, collaborating with colleagues and clients through email, phone calls, and video conferencing. They may have a more flexible schedule than those working directly for an individual, but may also have to balance multiple projects and deadlines.

Regardless of the specific workplace, speechwriters typically work closely with their clients to understand their goals, audience, and messaging. They conduct research and gather information to inform their writing, and may collaborate with other team members, such as researchers or communication specialists, to ensure their work is accurate and effective. Depending on the organization, speechwriters may also be involved in other communication and marketing initiatives, such as developing social media content or creating press releases.

If you've carefully filled out my form, and met with me to talk your speech over, misunderstandings are unlikely to arise.

Shall we begin?

If you've reviewed the process, the potential costs, read a couple of sample speeches and want to proceed, please fill in the form below. I'll get back to you within 48 hours to let you know whether I can meet your deadline and write the type of speech you are requesting.

The Art of Oratory: Exploring the Different Types of Speeches

Public speaking has the power to inform, persuade, entertain, and inspire audiences. It’s a critical tool for leaders, educators, advocates, and anyone looking to make an impact through their words. In the world of oratory, there are several different types of speeches, each serving a unique purpose and requiring a distinct approach. In this article, we’ll explore the primary categories of speeches to help you understand their objectives and master the nuances of delivering each one effectively.

Informative Speeches: Educating Your Audience

An informative speech does exactly what its name implies: it informs. The primary goal of an informative speech is to educate the audience about a particular topic. The subject matter can range immensely, from explaining a complex scientific theory to demonstrating how to bake a cake.

Characteristics of an Informative Speech

Clarity : Your speech must be clear and easy to follow. Use language that your audience understands.

Facts and Data : Cite accurate information and statistics to establish credibility and support your points.

Engagement : Despite being informative, you still need to engage your audience. Use anecdotes, visual aids, or rhetorical questions to keep them interested.

Examples of Informative Speeches

A lecture on the impacts of climate change.

A presentation about the history of the internet.

A seminar on improving personal finance skills.

Persuasive Speeches: Swinging Opinions and Driving Action

While informative speeches focus on providing information, persuasive speeches aim to convince the audience to accept a particular viewpoint or take specific action. Politicians trying to garner votes, salespeople persuading customers to purchase a product, or activists encouraging societal change are all examples of persuasive speaking.

Characteristics of a Persuasive Speech

Appeal to Emotions : Persuasive speeches often appeal to the audience’s emotions, making them feel something that aligns with your message.

Logical Argumentation : Use logical reasoning to build your case. This includes citing evidence and crafting well-thought-out arguments.

Credibility : Establish yourself as a trustworthy and knowledgeable source on the topic.

Examples of Persuasive Speeches

A campaign speech by a political candidate.

A charity fundraiser appeal for donations.

An environmentalist’s talk aimed at reducing plastic use.

Demonstrative Speeches: Showing How It’s Done

Demonstrative speeches are a subset of informative speeches but with a focus on instruction. The goal of a demonstrative speech is to teach the audience how to do something through a step-by-step process. It is critical that these types of speeches are well-organized and that each step is clearly illustrated.

Characteristics of a Demonstrative Speech

Practicality : The task should be feasible and practical for the audience to perform.

Visibility : If you’re demonstrating something physical, every member of the audience needs to see what you’re doing.

Simplicity : Break down complex tasks into simple steps to avoid confusing your audience.

Examples of Demonstrative Speeches

A cooking show host teaching a recipe.

A tech guru explaining how to set up a home network.

A fitness expert demonstrating a workout routine.

Motivational Speeches: Inspiring Change and Achievement

When you think of a motivational speech, you might picture a coach rousing a team before a big game or a business leader inspiring employees towards higher performance. The key to a motivational speech is to inspire and energize your audience to take action or overcome challenges.

Characteristics of a Motivational Speech

Inspirational Stories : Use narratives about overcoming adversity, achievements, or success stories.

Passion : Your enthusiasm and belief in the message should be evident in your delivery.

Actionable Advice : Provide clear steps or methods that the audience can use to achieve their goals.

Examples of Motivational Speeches

A graduation speech encouraging students to pursue their dreams.

A TED Talk sharing a personal story of success.

A corporate leader spurring a team to exceed goals.

Entertaining Speeches: The Fun Side of Speaking

Entertaining speeches are delivered to amuse, delight, and captivate an audience. Humor, storytelling, and charisma are the cornerstones of an entertaining speech. Although the primary intent is to entertain, these speeches can also convey a meaningful message or moral.

Characteristics of an Entertaining Speech

Humor : Utilize jokes, puns, and comedic timing to lighten the mood.

Engaging Delivery : Your delivery should be lively and dynamic to hold the audience’s attention.

Substance : Even funny speeches can have depth. Blend entertainment with substance for a more impactful speech.

Examples of Entertaining Speeches

A best man’s toast at a wedding.

A stand-up comedian’s set.

An after-dinner speech at a corporate event.

Special Occasion Speeches: Marking the Moments That Matter

Special occasion speeches are delivered during significant events, and their content is tailored to the event’s purpose, honorees, or theme. These speeches can be informative, persuasive, motivational, or entertaining, but they should always be relevant to the event and audience.

Characteristics of a Special Occasion Speech

Relevance : The speech must be appropriate for the occasion and audience.

Personalization : Tailor your message to the specific event or honorees.

Brevity : Many special occasion speeches are shorter, so convey your message concisely.

Examples of Special Occasion Speeches

A eulogy at a funeral.

A speech commemorating the anniversary of an organization.

An acceptance speech at an awards ceremony.

Becoming a skilled orator means understanding the different types of speeches and mastering the art of adapting your content and style to the occasion. Whether your aim is to inform, persuade, demonstrate, motivate, entertain, or honor a special occasion, remember that the most effective speeches connect with the audience on a personal level and leave a lasting impression. With practice and attention to these distinct speech purposes and characteristics, anyone can become an effective public speaker.

The annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner returns this Saturday for a night of comedy ‘roasting’ – where the great and the good are ruthlessly mocked in celebration of the freedom of the press.

In recent years, however, the night has taken on a different tone, with the atmosphere of warm self-deprecation and bipartisan bonhomie replaced by something more scathing and serious.

This week Jonathan Freedland is joined by Jeff Nussbaum, a former senior speech writer to Joe Biden, to discuss the art of writing gags for presidents and whether there is still space for humour in US politics.

Taylor swift review writer's name left out over safety concerns, taylor swift magazine redacts reviewer's name ... swifties sent violent threats.

Taylor Swift 's fans jump to defend their girl T-Swizzle ... and, one magazine's so concerned they removed a reviewer's byline -- 'cause they worried the person might get threats.

Paste, an entertainment/culture outlet, published its review of "The Tortured Poets Department" Friday ... but didn't include a specific author's name in the byline.

The magazine included an editor's note on its account ... saying when it reviewed "Lover" back in 2019 the writer who penned the piece received threats of violence -- and, the mag didn't want to put an employee in danger.

Probably a good call ... 'cause the review absolutely trashes Swift's 11th studio album -- saying it infantilizes its audience and comparing it to controversial poet Rupi Kaur 's work.

The opening line sets the tone for the entire piece ... with the writer starting off by saying, "Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this!" -- so, yeah the review's pretty critical.

But, Paste's review ain't stopping people from listening to the album ... 'cause 'TTPD' reportedly made history when it became the first album to garner more than 300 million Spotify streams in just one day.

BTW ... people online have mixed reactions to Paste's decision -- with some saying her fans should be allowed to debate with a person who's criticizing their fav artist while others applauded Paste for protecting their writer.

Paste better be careful though ... or they might end up getting name-dropped in Taylor's 12th album!

Universities must resist the pressures of politicization.

Kirkland Hall

The protests roiling American universities have been cast as the most recent skirmish in the fight over free speech on campus. In fact, they are something more. They are the latest and most dramatic example of the politicization of our colleges and universities by actors across the political spectrum. If we want to understand the dangers inherent in this development, history offers an example.

In 1810, philosopher and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt established an institution of higher learning unlike any the world had ever seen—the University of Berlin, now Humboldt University. It was a university dedicated not to the mere transmission of knowledge, but to its creation , by professors and students alike, in a living-learning community that fostered development of students’ full selves. This required a firm commitment to academic freedom and the protection from political influence by the state or other political actors.

Over the next century, Humboldt’s university became the greatest in the world. Its scientists produced groundbreaking work in physics, chemistry and medicine. Before World War I, 15% of Nobel prizes were won by University of Berlin faculty. Other German universities based on the Humboldt model led in fields from physics to history.

Humboldt’s impact in the U.S. was just as great. Johns Hopkins and The University of Chicago were founded on his model. Others, like Vanderbilt and the Ivies, abandoned their ecclesiastical roots and adopted Humboldt’s approach. James Kirkland, Vanderbilt’s second and longest-serving chancellor, was heavily influenced by the German model, as were many of Vanderbilt’s early leading faculty.

Yet despite its profound impact on the research university as we know it today, the University of Berlin is a cautionary tale.

After the Nazis destroyed its scientific eminence, the university found itself on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain and under the thumb of the East German communist regime. It has only slowly recovered. At its 200-year anniversary, its leader, Christoph Markschies said, “Today, nobody anywhere in the world is prepared to take this university…as a model.”

American universities should take note.

Our greatest threat today comes not from dictatorships of decades past, but from politicization on both the left and the right.

Conservative voices accuse universities of being woke factories, while progressives attack higher ed institutions for being inequality machines. The Israel-Gaza conflict has polarized college campuses to a degree unseen since the 1960s. Universities are in the crosshairs of Congress , and campus protests are crossing the line into violence and student arrests— even at Vanderbilt .

How should universities respond? The only viable path is to be clear about their purpose and values, and uphold the principles—like academic freedom, free speech, and civil discourse— that support them.

Principles are curious things. They have broad support in calm weather. But when the storms of political passions rage, that support starts to waver. Now, political commitments and moral convictions, carried with absolute certainty by true believers, carry the day. A university is then faced with the pressure to make an exception to its values and principles just this once, because the issue at hand seems to demand it. And thus, decision by decision, values and principles are eroded until they no longer provide guidance at all.

At the end of last year, Vanderbilt received two petitions from alumni on opposite sides of the Israel-Gaza conflict. One wanted the school to adopt tactics advocated by the Boycott, Divest and Sanction movement, and condemn Israel for genocide. The other wanted the university to voice strong support for Israel and adopt the definition of antisemitism proposed by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

Vanderbilt refused the demands of the first petition because the university, in keeping with our commitment to institutional neutrality, doesn’t boycott or divest from companies doing business in or with specific nations, unless required by law. What’s more, if Vanderbilt adopted BDS principles, it would put the university in violation of Tennessee law.

Vanderbilt also rejected adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism because adopting it would have severely limited our faculty’s freedom to research and teach what they want, how they want, which is rightly among the most cherished values on any college campus. Vanderbilt has faculty who study and teach the history and meaning of antisemitism. Adopting any official definition would violate institutional neutrality and limit their freedom to explore ideas as they see fit.

Let me be clear: Vanderbilt strongly condemns antisemitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia and other forms of hate. But when a university takes political stances or tries to provide official solutions to areas of active scholarship and debate, it undermines academic freedom and invites lobbying and advocacy of exactly the kind we’ve seen in recent months and turns the university into one more political battlefield. This erodes a university’s unique purpose: the pursuit of knowledge and truth.

Preventing the politicization of universities is vital, not only to protect academic freedom and freedom of speech. The stakes are even higher. Once schools enter the world of politics, the rules change. No one should confuse the reasoned discourse appropriate for a college campus with the rough-and-tumble circumstances of real-life politics.

Vanderbilt naturally encourages faculty and students to be civically engaged and to debate and advocate for their political beliefs. But it becomes a problem when members of our community feel so strongly about their point of view that they reject the clearly stated values of the university, attack its principles and fully commit themselves instead to political struggle.

The University of Berlin shows us that universities, like democracies, are fragile. Once we enter the game of politics, we weaken our purpose and play a different game—one we might very well lose.

This is why Vanderbilt practices and preaches institutional neutrality. This is why we provide an open forum, where all viewpoints can be heard. This is why we expect even our fiercest arguments to be respectful and fact-based. And this is why we set clear rules for how we express our opinions on this campus, and why we enforce them. Because there is too much at stake for us to do otherwise and risk losing our university or any other to the unchecked forces of politicization.

Did a gas lobbyist write an Ohio Senator’s speech about a pipeline resolution?

  • Published: Apr. 26, 2024, 2:46 p.m.

Ohio State senate members 2024

Michael A. Rulli, District 33, looks on during the recent Senate session in Columbus on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. David Petkiewicz, cleveland.com David Petkiewicz, cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio – When Republican state Sen. Michael Rulli took the podium to address his colleagues about a resolution declaring natural gas as “vital” to Ohio’s economy, his rhetoric matched nearly word-for-word what an oil and gas lobbyist sent him privately as a “sample script.”

Rulli stood before the Ohio Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee and, absent some minor changes and reshuffling of some paragraphs, made statements identical to what was sent to him by Mitch Given, an industry lobbyist.

“Senate Resolution 121 recognizes that natural gas and its production industry are vital to Ohio’s economic future,” Rulli told the committee on Sept. 20, 2023 . “It urges continued investment in natural gas infrastructure to make affordable energy available to Ohio.”

That’s not too far from a “sample script” sent by Given on May 22 that same year, shortly after Rulli’s resolution was introduced, later obtained by public records request.

“Natural gas and the natural gas industry are vital components of the state’s economic future. With this resolution, I urge continued investment in natural gas infrastructure to make affordable energy available to every Ohioan,” Given wrote.

A coincidence? Perhaps. But Rulli continued.

“Ohio is a leader in clean energy technology, and the natural gas industry leads Ohio in electric production when it compares to all the others,” Rulli said.

Here’s Given: “Ohio is a leader in clean energy technology, and the natural gas industry leads Ohio in clean electricity production when compared to other energy sources such as nuclear, wind, and solar,” he wrote.

One last example.

Rulli said: “Natural gas saves the average Ohio family $2,500 a year in energy costs, including $1,000 from its heating and appliances provided from natural gas.”

Given wrote: “It saves the average Ohio family $2,500 annually in total energy costs, including over $1,000 for home heating and appliances,” he said.

After running through the talking points that were the same as those Given provided, Rulli began speaking seemingly off-the-cuff, riffing on his support for renewable sources, although he emphasized they can’t yet produce the wattage that gas can today.

On Wednesday, the Ohio Senate unanimously passed Senate Resolution 121 , which Rulli sponsored. It doesn’t carry any force of law. But it acts as a declaration from the Senate that the gas industry is a “vital component of the state’s economic future.” Additionally, it urges “continued investment in natural gas infrastructure.”

Shortly after it passed, The Empowerment Alliance – a pro-natural gas dark money organization that Given has represented in the past – released a video on social media featuring Rulli that takes credit for “another legislative win!”

Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer has reached out to Given and Rulli. Rulli’s time in the Senate is likely running short. He recently won the Republican primary in a special election to represent Ohio’s 6th Congressional District. Given the partisan tilt of the district, he’s heavily favored to win the looming June 11 special election.

While the stakes are low in the context of a resolution, the episode highlights a cozy relationship between state Republicans and the gas industry.

According to state lobbying records , Given represented America’s Natural Gas Alliance from 2012 to 2015. From 2016 to 2021, he represented the American Petroleum Institute. More recently, he has traveled around the state, convincing county commissions to pass resolutions opposing solar farms and in support of the notion that natural gas is a form of “green energy.” This advocacy came to light via public records requests from Dave Anderson, a researcher with the pro-renewable nonprofit the Energy and Policy Institute.

Given met with county commissioners as a representative of The Empowerment Alliance, a dark-money nonprofit funded in part by Karen Buchwald Wright and her husband Thomas Rastin, executives with a natural gas compressor company in Knox County. Tax records show that TEA raised $5.8 million between 2019 and 2022. While federal law doesn’t require the nonprofit to disclose its contributors, Rastin confirmed in an email to Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer that he’s a contributor. Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer previously reported TEA’s backstage role drafting state legislation that legally redefined “green energy” to include natural gas – a heat trapping fossil fuel.

At a recent community hearing in opposition to a proposed solar farm, Given spoke at the event after he was introduced as someone talking to farmers helping them to “find their voice and help them organize and … push back” against solar projects, according to the Energy News Network .

SR121 is just talk. But last year, lawmakers passed legislation allowing gas utilities to charge customers millions to build new pipelines to speculative megasites that haven’t yet found a buyer. House Republicans recently proposed legislation creating an interest-free loan program for pipeline developers funded with $20 million in state funds, while also sharply reducing their property tax liability on the pipelines.

Meanwhile, the state recently leased out mineral rights to Salt Fork State Park and two state wildlife areas to out-of-state gas companies, thanks to a recently passed law that forced a state land leasing program into fruition.

Pro-Palestinian valedictorian speaks out after USC cancels speech

By Kerry Breen

April 17, 2024 / 12:48 PM EDT / CBS News

The University of Southern California valedictorian whose planned graduation speech was canceled due to what the school referred to as safety concerns told CBS News that she feels "betrayed" by the academic institution.

Asna Tabassum, 22, majored in biomedical engineering and has a minor in "Resistance to Genocide," an interdisciplinary series of courses that researches the "causes, results and representations of attempted genocide, as well as resistance to genocidal mass violence," according to USC's website .

Critics said Tabassum shared social media posts that promoted "antisemitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric," and highlighted a link in her public Instagram profile to a website that refers to Zionism, a movement that calls for the development and protection of a Jewish state, as a "racist settler-colonial ideology."

Tabassum, who is Muslim and pro-Palestinian, said the link was from years ago, and told CBS News' Carter Evans her social media accounts have always been private.

"I'm not apologizing for the link that I put in my Instagram. What I am saying is that I'm committed to human rights. And I'm committed to the human rights for all people," Tabassum said. "A lot of the campaign against me has been, for example, claiming that I don't value the life of Jews. That's simply not true."

Asna Tabassum

In a statement released through the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Los Angeles, Tabassum said she has been subject to a "campaign of racist hatred" from "anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices" because of her "uncompromising belief in human rights for all."

Tabassum told CBS News that her opinions about the world are informed by what she learned from her USC courses, including the "Resistance to Genocide" minor. She said she was honored when, two weeks ago, she was chosen to speak at the school's commencement ceremony, and said she planned to share a "core message" of "hope." However, just days later, the offer was rescinded.

USC provost Andrew Guzman said social media discussions regarding Tabassum's selection "had taken on an alarming tenor" and "escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security," prompting the cancelation. About 65,000 people are expected to attend the commencement ceremony in May.

"While this is disappointing, tradition must give way to safety," Guzman wrote in a message to the university community. "This decision is not only necessary to maintain the safety of our campus and students, but is consistent with the fundamental legal obligation — including the expectations of federal regulators — that universities act to protect students and keep our campus community safe."

Tabassum said that she had not "received any physical threats," but "won't discount the amount of hatred" she has seen online. However, she told CBS News that she "was never given the evidence that any safety concerns and that any security concerns were founded."

"I think anyone who's watching this ... can draw their own conclusion," Tabassum said. "I look at what I look like, I am who I am. I stand up for what I stand for."

In his letter, Guzman said that the school's decision has "nothing to do with freedom of speech."

"There is no free-speech entitlement to speak at a commencement," he wrote. "The issue here is how best to maintain campus security and safety, period."

Tabassum said she disagreed with Guzman's statement.

"It's expression, it's academic discourse," Tabassum said. "And in many ways, it is speech that is being stifled."

The U.S. Senate voted Tuesday to approve a bill that would ban TikTok nationwide unless Chinese parent company ByteDance sells its stake in the popular app. The development will likely result in a court battle between the U.S. and TikTok, which argues that the legislation violates the First Amendment — and if TikTok loses that fight, there’s a real chance it could be shut off for Americans.

The Senate approval of the TikTok ban bill was tied to a emergency foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The Senate, by a 79-18 vote, OK’d the bundled legislation after the House passed the resolutions Saturday and sent them on an expedited basis to the Senate for approval on an up-or-down vote.

TikTok will file a legal challenge once the bill is signed into law , Michael Beckerman, TikTok’s head of public policy for the Americas, wrote in a memo to company staff over the weekend. The legislation is a “clear violation” of the First Amendment, the exec wrote: “This is the beginning, not the end of this long process.” Beckerman also criticized the TikTok divest-or-ban measure as “an unprecedented deal worked out between the Republican Speaker [Mike Johnson] and President Biden.”

Ahead of the vote, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, delivered comments on the Senate floor Tuesday afternoon about the national security threats posed by ByteDance’s ownership of TikTok. Passage of the bill “goes a long way towards safeguarding our democratic systems from covert foreign influence,” he said, saying that Chinese companies like ByteDance “don’t owe their obligation to their customers, or their shareholders, but they owe it to the PRC [People’s Republic of China] government.”

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), chair of the Senate’s Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, suggested TikTok and ByteDance are “weaponizing” data and AI to spy on American citizens, the military and government personnel, including journalists covering the company. (In 2022, ByteDance said it fired four employees for “misconduct” after the company found they accessed TikTok data on several users , including two reporters.)

Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) spoke out against the TikTok ban bill before the final vote, saying the more pressing “clear and present danger” is the harm kids face from social media apps more broadly, including from U.S.-based companies.

“I don’t deny that TikTok poses some national security risks,” Markey said. “TikTok has its problems. No. 1, TikTok poses a serious risk to the privacy and mental health of our young people.” But he said the bill likely would result in “widespread censorship,” and he suggested that the bill’s supporters object to liberal political viewpoints popular on TikTok. “Instead of suppressing speech on a single application, we could be addressing the root of the mental health crisis by targeting Big Tech’s pernicious, privacy-invasion business model of teenagers and children in our country,” Markey said.

TikTok has said the bill, if it becomes law, would infringe the free-speech rights of its 170 million U.S. users and “devastate” the estimated 7 million American businesses on the platform. It claims TikTok contributed $24 billion to the U.S. economy in 2023 .

The TikTok divest-or-ban legislation has been opposed by the ACLU and other advocacy groups.

“This is still nothing more than an unconstitutional ban in disguise,” Jenna Leventoff, senior policy counsel at the ACLU, said in a statement Tuesday prior to the Senate vote. “Banning a social media platform that hundreds of millions of Americans use to express themselves would have devastating consequences for all of our First Amendment rights, and will almost certainly be struck down in court.”

Because of its Chinese ties, TikTok has been a political football in the United States for years, as well as in other countries (including India, where it’s been banned since June 2020 ). TikTok has prevailed in challenging other laws in the U.S. seeking to ban the app. Last December, a  federal judge blocked Montana’s first-of-its-kind statewide ban of TikTok , ruling that the law likely violated the First Amendment. An attempt by the Trump administration to  force ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban also was found unconstitutional  by federal courts on First Amendment grounds.

Backers of the TikTok bill argue that it doesn’t restrict free speech, saying it only requires apps to be owned by a company that isn’t subject to the control of an adversarial foreign government. As a precedent, the legislation’s proponents point to the 2020 sale of dating app Grindr by Chinese gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech Co. to a group of U.S.-based investors, a transaction forced by the U.S. government over concerns about the privacy of the app’s users.

Per the text of the bill, legal challenges to the “Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act” may be filed only in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

If TikTok is unsuccessful in getting the divest-or-ban law overturned, it is unlikely that ByteDance would sell its ownership stake — and that the app would effectively become outlawed in the U.S. Chinese officials have  said the government would “firmly oppose”  any forced sale of TikTok, which would represent a technology export and be subject to the government’s approval. “You’re not going to be able to force ByteDance to divest,” James Lewis, SVP at the Center for Strategic and International Studies,  told  the New York Times last month.
