Let's talk about no-essay scholarships. Whether you've been applying to scholarships for a while or you're completely new to the scholarship process, chances are, at some point you've felt tired, frustrated, or even fully on fed-up with writing all of those essays. A smart strategy when applying for scholarships is to mix up the types of scholarships you're applying for. But what does this actually mean?

How difficult is it to win a no essay scholarship?

Because no essay scholarships are usually open to so many different types of students, along with the fact that they often require very little effort on the part of the student (and run more like sweepstakes than real in-depth scholarships), means that they are difficult to win, and the process is unpredictable.

Luckily, because these scholarships require so little time commitment to apply, not winning one of these types of scholarships doesn't necessarily indicate that you've wasted your time applying, since it likely didn't take that much time in the first place!

This, in combination with the fact that the winners for these scholarships are generally always selected at random, means that increasing your chances of winning one of these scholarships is very, very difficult.

In the spirit of full-transparency: the only way that you can actually increase your chances of winning no essay scholarships is by applying for all of them and not missing any deadlines.

For example, take Tallo's monthly no essay scholarships . They pick at least 12 winners each year, usually at the end of each month. After that, I recommend you also do some surfing of the web, as well as outreach to your guidance counselor or financial aid office to help you find local scholarships and even more nuanced opportunities.

Important tips and things to keep in mind with no essay scholarships

Tip #1: apply often..

Many of these scholarships run continuously on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Set a reminder for yourself to revisit these scholarships each month and reapply to give yourself the best chance at winning one!

Tip #2: Find ways to get a leg up.

Scholarships with no essays that have any sort of additional component (like an art or video submission) will tend to give you a "leg up" because they involve more than some luck.

Take full advantage of scholarships like these by putting your best foot forward with that extra submission!

#2: Do your brainstorming.

You likely wouldn’t start an essay on the American Revolution without doing some initial brainstorming and planning first. The same rule should apply for when it’s time to search for scholarships.

Sit down with a pen and paper or a blank word document open, and start to bullet out a list of traits and things that you feel make up who you are as a person. These things should be both academic and personal. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, here’s a sneak peek into what my own personal list might look like:

-I am from New Jersey

-I am a business student with an interest in marketing

-I like to play sports (tennis, basketball, etc)

-I hold leadership positions in my extracurriculars

-I identify as female

-I am a twin

-I am left-handed

-I enjoy doing crossword puzzles

-I go to college in Wisconsin

I could go on and on with this list, but I won’t bore you! What I’m trying to get at though is that creating a list like this to track your hobbies, academic pursuits, and other things that make up who you are can be incredibly helpful in allowing you to find scholarships that are highly specific to you.

PS - For some students, this may also fall under the initial organization step of the process, but ultimately it doesn’t matter when you do it as long as it gets done.

#3: Know where to look.

Knowing what types of scholarships you want to search for doesn’t really matter if you don’t know where to actually search for them! Here are a few ideas on where you can get started in searching for scholarships:

- Scholarship search engines like AccessScholarships.com, which allow you to search through thousands of scholarship opportunities all in one place

- Normal search engines , such as Google (the more specific you can be here, the better)

-Your school’s college prep, guidance, or financial aid page/website

- Social media (you can follow scholarship accounts and hashtags that might be relevant to help you discover local scholarships)

- Family, friends, teachers, coaches, and other people in your community who might know of local or community-based scholarships that you’re eligible for

#4: If a scholarship has an essay or additional type of submission, make sure you put your absolute best foot forward.

This is, in my opinion, the biggest key to help students see success in actually winning scholarships.

You can have a 4.0 GPA and solid letters of recommendation, but if you don’t also take the time to carefully craft, edit, and perfect the essay (or other additional submission), you’re missing out on giving the scholarship committee the opportunity to learn more about who you are as a person and why you’re a great fit to win the award.

#5: Keep those grades up.

Although this eligibility requirement can definitely vary, many scholarships require students to have at least a 2.5 or 3.0 GPA. Sometimes, the minimum requirement can be even higher, such as a 3.75/4.0.

While grades certainly aren’t the end-all-be-all, keeping your GPA up (as high as you possibly can!) will make sure that you are opening yourself up to as many opportunities as possible.

#6: Apply often.

Unfortunately, applying for scholarships is not a “one and done” process. To give yourself the highest chance at seeing success, you should apply for scholarships as often as you can, or whenever you come across an opportunity that you think is worth applying for.

Many students find it helpful to set specific goals in this area, like to apply for 3 scholarships each month. Ultimately, the goal you set should be one that is specific and realistic, based on all of the other things that you’re juggling!

#7: Ask for feedback along the way.

If you don't ever take the time to assess your weak spots, how can you possibly improve?

Asking for feedback throughout the scholarship process, whether it be from a committee, a teacher, or someone who is helping you along the way, is crucial to helping you grow and becoming a stronger applicant. 

Getting feedback is especially important when it comes to the scholarship essay piece of the puzzle. When we write and edit, we tend to overlook our own mistakes because we're so used to making them. Sometimes it takes an extra set of eyes on an essay to help lead you in the direction of success.

No-essay scholarships: To conclude...

To summarize, no-essay scholarships can be a great addition to any overall scholarship strategy for high school, college, and graduate students.

Since no-essay scholarships often operate on a monthly or quarterly basis, you can give yourself a better chance at winning these scholarships if you enter in every application period that you're eligible for.

What to know:  Bold.org partners with donors to create scholarships, grants, and fellowships for students who qualify. The interface is sleek, and the website offers exclusive scholarships you won't find elsewhere. 

You can explore scholarships by category. For instance, Bold.org has a tab for nursing students, women, and students from Texas. Bold.org even has a button you can toggle to search for scholarships that don't require essays. The website is free to use.  

What to know:  CollegeBoard is probably best know for its administration of college entry exams and Advanced Placement programs, but it also has a tool to help you find scholarships. Its website has a database of more than 6,000 scholarship opportunities. 

After you make an account, you'll be able to search its opportunities through various filters. This includes scholarships available for children of divorced parents, non-citizens, and students who are members of some community organizations. The CollegeBoard search tool is free to use. 

What to know: GoingMerry will autofill some scholarship forms once you've input the required information, saving you time in the process and allowing you to apply to multiple scholarships at the same time. Additionally, it will help you keep on top of deadlines by sending you reminders about when applications are due. 

The website is also a great source for local awards, which may be harder to find on other scholarship websites. GoingMerry even has a mobile app — perfect for students who want to manage scholarship applications on the go. GoingMerry is free to use. 

What to know:  Scholly gained a premier reputation after appearing on the hit show  Shark Tank . The scholarship search website with pair you with scholarships and give them a score. The higher the score, the better you fit the scholarship's requirements.

"Honestly, there are very limited advantages to using private scholarships over grants directly from schools. Unlike private scholarships, most grants from schools do not require a separate application and are renewable for four years. Additionally, many colleges will deduct the value of a private scholarship from any award they give you. This is called 'displacement.' And because this practice is so prevalent, it often leaves students with no net financial benefit, despite the effort they invested in submitting an application."

Jennifer Ledwith:

"Unlike scholarships from schools, private scholarships can be used at multiple universities. Furthermore, unlike grants from schools, private scholarships don't have to follow federal or institutional financial aid methodology. Consequently, students can receive private scholarships without regard to other financial aid awards. Furthermore, some private scholarships send the money directly to the student, allowing greater flexibility in using the funds."

Should you always consider scholarships before loans? Are there any scenarios you should pick a loan?

Christopher Rim: 

"No, you should never pick a loan over a scholarship! You always have to pay back loans. Students should bear in mind that they may have their scholarship rescinded if they don't meet the terms and conditions. They should be absolutely sure to read the terms of their scholarship thoroughly to understand the possible consequences if they fail to meet the set conditions."

Ryan Wangman:

"You'll need to repay the money you borrow from any lender, so it's never a good idea to choose a loan over a scholarship, which is money you don't have to pay back. There aren't any scenarios I can think of where it is better to pick a loan than a scholarship. 

How do you know what scholarships you're qualified for?

Rim : 

"Many websites will allow students to filter through their databases to find scholarships they are eligible for. Others ask students to create a profile and then match them based on demographic information. Once students find the scholarships on databases, they should be sure to cross check eligibility requirements on the sponsoring organization's website."

Vallab : 

"Private scholarships will usually have a qualifications section in their description. Some colleges may publish a scholarship grid showing the GPA and test scores required for certain levels of eligibility. Not all merit scholarship information is published however."

New York Ramblers Scholarship

Established in 2016, the Ramblers Scholarship supports student-athletes pursuing an undergraduate education who self-identify publicly as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or intersex (LGBTQI), or as demonstrated and committed straight allies. Awardees will receive a one-time scholarship, paid directly to their school to cover tuition fees. Up to two scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded publicly each summer. The application process is open annually from January 1 – May 1.

The application process entails:

• Completed application form
• Five (5) brief essays
• Two (2) letters of recommendation
• List of relevant honors and extracurricular activities
• Copy of transcripts

An eligible applicant is:

• An athlete (all sports and athletic activities qualify);
• An open and self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or intersex person; or a demonstrated and committed ally;
• A graduating high school student who plans to attend a recognized undergraduate college or university in the United States OR is an already matriculated US undergraduate college student; and
• Between the age of 15- and 22-years-old (depending on age at time of high school graduation)

Unlocking Achievements from Horticulture Research Institute Scholarships

Three students from the Department of Horticultural Science have pursued their plant science passions, each with their unique path and achievements. Debasish Paul is a doctoral student who is focused on the sustainability of annual bedding plant supply chains, and he has received three prestigious scholarships at North Carolina State University. Ramsey Arram is a master’s post-graduate who was inspired to further develop his ornamental plant breeding expertise after earning a biology degree from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Lauren Staley, an undergraduate student, shares her experience receiving a Horticultural Research Institute scholarship and discusses how mentorship has been pivotal in her academic journey in horticulture.

Debasish Paul, a doctoral student

How did you find out about the scholarship?

I discovered this scholarship through Rachel McLaughlin’s (Graduate Services Coordinator) departmental emails, which she generously shared with all the Department of Horticultural Science students. After reviewing the requirements on the Horticultural Research Institute’ s (HRI) website, I decided to apply. This scholarship has been key to my academic journey, providing the necessary support for me to continue my research and contribute to the field of horticulture.

What inspired you to pursue your horticulture degree?

I was born and raised in Bangladesh, a country with excellent climatic conditions for crop production. Despite the favorable conditions, growers are often short-changed when it comes to selling their crops for an appropriate price. I was determined to find a solution to this problem. This passion led me to pursue a Master’s in Agricultural Production Chain Management, specializing in horticultural chains at the Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. During my studies, I developed a deeper knowledge of supply chain sustainability by assessing the Litchi supply chain. I discovered a significant demand for Litchi in the chain but that no postharvest management practice or food processing was involved. Stakeholders expressed a need for more Litchi production in the chain to meet the market demand. This research experience ignited my desire to extend my skillset in further supply chain research. I decided to pursue my doctorate in horticultural science at North Carolina State University to work on the sustainability of the floriculture supply chain, hoping to make a significant difference in the field.

Tell us about your current research.

My current research focuses on the supply chain of annual bedding plants in America. This unique study involves a nationwide survey to identify the roles and connections of stakeholders in the chain, as well as the factors that influence its sustainability. The outcomes of this research will be instrumental in guiding stakeholders to enhance their business-to-business collaboration and meet consumer demand sustainably.

In addition, I am conducting a study to measure consumer preferences and willingness to pay for sustainability attributes such as production method, origin of production, and certifications for bedding plants. The findings of this research will help stakeholders in the bedding plant supply chain measure consumer preferences and willingness to pay for different sustainability attributes. This, in turn, will help the stakeholders adopt the necessary practices to make their business sustainable and meet consumer demand.

Has there been an enduring impactful moment from your horticulture studies?

I am deeply humbled and overjoyed to share that I have been honored with three prestigious scholarships for my academic achievements at NC State’s Department of Horticultural Science. The HRI Mugget Scholarship (2023), The Randolph G. Gardner Graduate Fund for Excellence (2023), and the University Graduate Fellowship (2022-23) have recognized my dedication and commitment to horticulture. Additionally, I have been selected to participate in the Building Future Faculty Program (2023) at NC State. I am deeply grateful to all the organizations that have acknowledged my efforts and rewarded me with these esteemed awards.

Do you have any advice for others seeking scholarships?

Ramsey Arram, a master’s post-graduate student

I found the HRI scholarships on their scholarships webpage . They responded quickly to my submitted application. Then I was contacted by Dale Deppe, the owner of Spring Meadows. We had a good conversation about how he started the company. It’s important to write a short biography about your inspiration and academic path. Jennifer Gray, with HRI, instructed me on the details for the biography and the addresses to send ‘thank you’ letters.

I earned a biology degree with concentrations in botany and environmental science at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2004. I have worked on several farms, homesteads and nurseries in North Carolina and California. I also have created extensive ethnobotanical guides for wild plants for three regions within both of these states. In total for all three guides, I have approximately 1,330 entries for wild plants with ethnobotanical plants, though many species occur in more than one region. Throughout my career, I fell in love with being a lead grower and also the resilience of wild plants. These two passions were hybridized when Assistant Professor Hsuan Chen agreed to be my advisor for my Master of Horticultural Science degree. Some of the breeding projects I work on are to bring the resilience of wild plants into our ornamental crops and domesticated food crops. Other projects include traditional breeding methods to create cultivars such as Hibiscus. We often implement polyploidy induction which can overcome fertilization barriers, induce sterility, or result in interesting and favorable characteristics.

The acceleration in my horticultural career would have been unfathomable before acceptance into the master’s program.I have had the great honor of managing the greenhouses and growing spaces for Chen. I have implemented polyploidy induction on five species and carried out most of the tasks involved in two extensive interspecies breeding programs. Tell us about your research interests.

All of my classes were cultivation-focused, as I intend to work as a lead grower in research and breeding programs. The NC State graduate-level cultivation classes are as invigorating and enriching to my skills and abilities as the mass flow and diffusion of nutrition of the soil solution being carried into apical meristems and sinks. Every class has provided a rich bank of knowledge for me to employ in our greenhouses and growing spaces.The advice of Chen elevates my understanding of plant breeding and the importance in details of every task involved. Remarkable moments have been when I confirmed that polyploidy induction was successful for 16 plants of Lindera benzoin (northern spicebush), and also when Chen worked with me in publishing our paper: Genome Doubling of Northern Spicebush, Lindera benzoin L. !  I searched for polyploidy induction papers for the Lindera genus many times during my literature research. Now it is the first research paper available in the search results through Google Scholar!

Do you have any advice for others seeking scholarships?  

Passion, dedication, contribution and details were expressed with vitality in my HRI Spring Meadows scholarship application. The opportunity to manage greenhouses and implement tasks for our breeding projects has given me a rich array of horticultural research to write about. I know students from many paths in horticulture are awarded HRI scholarships. I would make sure to express your passions, the scientific details, and short-term and long-term goals. It is a great honor to receive the HRI Spring Meadows Scholarship. I will be flying out to their nursery for a tour this spring! I love the NC State Department of Horticultural Science as the passion for this walk in life attracts beautiful, kind, thoughtful and enriching souls. Our nerdy conversations can include subjects on carbon reductions in floriculture, pathogen resistance in tomato breeding, to the importance of permaculture on a global scale.

Lauren Staley, an undergraduate student

During my time at Alamance Community College (ACC), I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by exceptional people, particularly my advisors. Dean Elizabeth Riley , the head of the horticulture department at the time, shared a parallel educational path to mine and generously guided me through various ways to help finance my future studies. She presented me with numerous scholarship opportunities, one being the Horticultural Research Institute which offered multiple scholarship resources. This truly has helped me along my journey, not only through HRI but many others as well. 

As a transfer student to NC State University, my educational journey began at ACC, where I discovered my passion for horticulture. Throughout high school, I had been involved with the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program where my interest primarily centered around animal science until I enrolled in my first plant identification class my senior year. Transitioning to college, I was uncertain about which academic path I wanted to pursue. I had heard that ACC had an excellent horticulture program so I decided to take my prerequisites there along with a few classes. It didn’t take me long to realize that this field resonated with me on a profound level, igniting my undiscovered passion. I then planned my next steps which involved completing my associate’s degree in horticulture at ACC, setting the path for my pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University. 

  Has there been an enduring impactful moment from your horticulture studies?

Throughout my 2 years at ACC, I spent a lot of time working as a student worker with my position being the greenhouse manager. This opportunity led me to practice my skills through multiple hands-on experiences rather than just learning in the classroom setting. The role helped pave my career path and guide me to a more defined part of the green industry. Managing three on-campus greenhouses sparked my curiosity about larger-scale operations and motivated me to seek those opportunities. This also led me to participate in an internship at Plantworks Nursery where I got to experience large-scale greenhouse and nursery management. My times at both of these excelling environments most definitely made an impact during my horticulture studies. In May of 2024, I will have the opportunity to build upon my previous experiences as I complete my second internship at Greenleaf Nursery Company which will push me towards greater growth and success within the industry.

  Do you have any advice for others seeking scholarships?

Scholarships represent an invaluable opportunity for students at the college level. While the initial step of filling out the submission forms may seem daunting to some, it is crucial to recognize the great benefits they offer. A common misconception, one I used to face, is that with the application comes lengthy essays, deterring many from evening attempting to apply. However, it is important to note that not all scholarships require extensive writing. For instance, programs like HRI offer a process where a single general application form can potentially apply to numerous scholarships across various foundations. The financial support through these scholarships is undeniably beneficial in the long run. Even if one receives a scholarship for a modest amount, the overall impact of securing multiple awards can add up and contribute to one’s educational endeavors. Investing the time and effort for scholarships not only aids in relieving students’ financial burdens but also sets a positive motivation for one’s academic and professional journey.
