The Telugu language Indian action epic “RRR” (short for “Rise Roar Revolt”) has returned to US theaters for an exceptional one-night-only engagement on June 1st following its initial theatrical release. Some hindsight has made it easy to guess why writer/director S.S. Rajamouli has only now broken through to Western audiences with “RRR” despite his consistent box office success. Rajamouli’s latest is an anti-colonial fable and buddy drama about the imaginary combo of two real-life freedom fighters, Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) and Alluri Sitarama Raju ( Ram Charan ). “RRR” is also a fine showcase for Rajamouli’s characteristic focus on maximalist action choreography, overwhelming stuntwork and pyrotechnics, and sophisticated computer graphics.

By the time he made “RRR,” Rajamouli had already developed his brand of Nationalistic self-mythologizing with some help from recurring collaborators like regular story writer (and biological father) Vijayendra Prasad and both co-leads, who previously starred in Rajamouli’s “Yamadonga” and “Magadheera,” respectively.

Set in and around Delhi in 1920, “RRR” pointedly lacks historical context so that Rajamouli and his team can transform a straight-forward rescue mission into a rallying cry for reunification and also cathartic violence. Bheem, the avenging “shepherd” of the Adivasian Gond tribe, visits Delhi to track down Malli ( Twinkle Sharma ), an innocent pre-teen who’s kidnapped from her Gondian mother by the cartoonishly evil British Governor Scott ( Ray Stevenson ) and his sadistic wife Cathy ( Alison Doody ).

Raju, a peerless Colonial police officer, befriends Bheem without realizing that they’re at cross purposes: Bheem wants to break into Scott’s fortress-like quarters to rescue Maali while Raju wants to catch the unknown “tribal” that Scott’s lackey Edward ( Edward Sonnenblick ) fears might be lurking about. Raju and Bheem immediately bond after they save an unrelated child from being crushed by a runaway train, as clear a sign as any of Rajamouli’s love for Cecil B. DeMille-style melodrama. (“Ben Hur” is an acknowledged influence for Rajamouli, as are the action/period dramas of fellow DeMille-ian Mel Gibson ).

It’s also fitting that “RRR” is Rajamouli’s big breakthrough since it's inevitably about Bheem as an inspiring symbol of quasi-traditional, boundary-trampling patriotism. Rajamouli has gotten quite good at incorporating potentially alienating elements, like his cheap-seats love of grisly violence and brash sloganeering, into his propulsive, inventive, and visually assured fight scenes and dance numbers.

Rajamouli has also already perfected the way he works with and uses his actors as part of his shock-and-awe style of melodrama. Rama Rao is ideally cast as the naively sweet-natured Bheem, whose messianic qualities are also effectively high-lit in a handful of rousing set pieces, like when a bare-chested Bheem wrestles a tiger into submission. Rama Rao’s performance isn’t the main thing, but it is the emblematic inspiration that, along with a “Passion of the Christ”-worthy scourging, understandably leads an assembly of Indian nationals to attack Scott and his bloodthirsty hambone wife in a later scene.

Likewise, Charan’s steely-eyed performance in “RRR” is limited, but strong enough to be credibly superhuman. Rajamouli knows exactly how to capture his best sides, as in an astounding opening action scene where Raju descends into a rioting mob just to subdue and apprehend one particular dissident. Rao and Charan’s bro-mantic chemistry and syncopated physicality have already made a viral success of the movie’s splashy “Naatu Naatu” musical number, but that scene’s infectiously joyful presentation is supra-human by design.

The spirit of the individual matters more than any single person in Rajamouli’s movies and “RRR” is a perfect expression of that notion. It’s also a decent reflection of Rajamouli’s fame, which Film Companion South ’s Sagar Tetali keenly suggests is “the triumph of directorial ambition over the actor-star—the triumph of a brand of storytelling over the South Indian star image.”

With “RRR,” Rajamouli repeats his preference for one nation under populist ubermenschen. Both Bheem and Raju are extraordinary men because they are, at heart, aspirational expressions of the people’s will. Their lives, their loved ones, and their relationships are all of secondary importance—check out Bollywood star Ajay Devgn ’s explosive cameo!—so it makes sense that the cast’s images and performances are also blown up to James Cameron-sized proportions.

Like Cameron, Rajamouli has earned a reputation for pushing the limits of industrialized pop cinema. In that sense, “RRR” feels simultaneously personal and gargantuan in scope. Film Comment ’s R. Emmet Sweeney is right to caution viewers regarding the towering streak of “Hindu-centric” Nationalism and characterizations at the heart of Rajamouli’s “Pan-Indian address.” Sweeney is also right to hail Rajamouli’s dazzling “technical innovation.” It’s not every day that a new Indian movie—which are typically not advertised to Western viewers beyond indigenous language speakers, and therefore largely ignored by Western outlets—is presented as an event to American theatergoers. Attend or miss out.

Available in theaters tonight, June 1st, and also streaming on Netflix.

‘RRR’ Review: A Hero (or Two) Shall Rise

Scenes of glorious excess make the screen hum with energy in S.S. Rajamouli’s action epic set in British colonial India.

rrr movie review pdf

By Nicolas Rapold

It’s not long in “RRR” before a tiger and a wolf collide midair during a brawl with one of the film’s two musclebound heroes. Scenes of glorious excess make the screen hum with energy in the latest feature from S.S. Rajamouli, the director of the “Baahubali” blockbusters.

Set in 1920s India before independence, “RRR” pairs two of the country’s biggest stars, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. (known as “Jr. NTR”) and Ram Charan, as superfriends from either side of a bloody colonial divide. A goofily gallant Jr. NTR plays Bheem, a warrior from the Gond tribe, while Charan smolders as Ram, a fearsome police officer who is underestimated by his white superiors. (The characters are inspired by two rebel heroes from the era, Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju.)

Bheem journeys to Delhi to rescue a Gond girl enslaved by the British governor and his wife, a couple of sadists. Ram has orders to identify and capture Bheem by going undercover with revolutionaries. Instead, the men unwittingly make fast friends when they save a child stranded on a river that’s on fire. (As one does.)

But their missions get inevitably entangled, and Rajamouli (who collaborated on the story with his screenwriter father, Vijayendra Prasad), stirs in an aw-shucks courtship between Bheem and the governor’s not-racist niece (Olivia Morris).

Rajamouli shoots the film’s action with hallucinogenic fervor, supercharging scenes with a shimmering brand of extended slow-motion and C.G.I. that feels less “generated” than unleashed. Here-to-there plot filler in “RRR” is instantly forgiven with each wild set-piece: Ram furiously tunneling through a hundred-strong mob outside his garrison, or the rumbling dance-off (the “Naatu Naatu” musical number) where Bheem and Ram giddily exhaust the British cads and delight the ladies.

The rousing anticolonialist battle royal concludes with one final fist-pump: an end-credit song celebrating political figures from across India.

RRR Rated PG-13 for violent sequences, some intense language and general mayhem. With subtitles. Running time: 3 hours 7 minutes. In theaters.

The Indian Action Blockbuster That Should Make Hollywood Jealous

RRR is the heroic epic we’ve been waiting for—one that’s not afraid of its own extravagance.

Ram Charan walking away from a burning building in "RRR"

I can think of two action films from the past decade that involved a stunt in which an actor throws an entire motorcycle at someone. The first is the 2015 Marvel sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron . Captain America (played by Chris Evans), battling bad guys in a snowy forest, does a flip with his bike and flings it at an armored tank . But the moment is brushed off; Cap mutters an unrelated joke and his wild accomplishment is immediately undercut, an eye-rolling punctuation to a busy but washed-out combat set piece.

The other movie to feature two-wheelers as handheld weapons is the Indian epic RRR , a box-office phenomenon that’s become one of the highest grossers in the country’s history . In the final act, the rebel hero Komaram Bheem (N. T. Rama Rao Jr.), confronted with a motorcycle vrooming toward him, stops it in its tracks with a kick, grabs it by the front wheel, and uses it to demolish various opponents, swinging it around like a very unwieldy sword. The feat is ridiculous, but also utterly glorious, rendered in ultra-slow motion set to booming, jubilant music.

RRR , written and directed by S. S. Rajamouli, is more than three hours long, and its run time is bursting with moments like this, aggressive spectacles that are given enough room and emphasis to let the audience revel in them. Bheem is introduced with a training montage in the forest that sees him battle a tiger and a wolf. Later on, in one of his most preposterous attacks on nefarious colonial Brits, he mounts a truck filled with animals and crashes it into a gated fortress, then leaps out, flanked by an assortment of wild creatures, while carrying flaming torches in each hand. The visual is heroic nonsense, sure, but it’s also stirringly maximalist poetry, the kind of sincere triumphalism that feels absent from peer Hollywood blockbusters.

RRR (in English, the title stands for “Rise, Roar, Revolt”) is possibly the most expensive Indian film ever made, with a budget equivalent to $72 million. It is a product of the Telugu-language industry based in Hyderabad, which rivals the Mumbai-based Bollywood and has begun to threaten that sector’s position in terms of financial success. Rajamouli’s last two movies before this one are among the country’s biggest hits. So upon its March release, RRR ’s smash reception in India was to be expected. But its impressive performance in America , where it was initially screened in about 1,000 theaters, was surprising, given the comparative lack of press and advertising.

Since its strong opening weekend, RRR has become a word-of-mouth event in the U.S. Some theaters have organized packed special screenings as one-night events, and others have gone all in on daily showtimes for the foreseeable future, even though the film is now available to stream on Netflix. RRR has broken through for American audiences for likely a few reasons—many people desire fun, communal viewing experiences after years of COVID lockdowns, and cinema chains are casting wider nets as traditional Hollywood studios have had far fewer theatrical releases than usual in recent years. But I think the main explanation is that RRR offers the kind of action extravagance that even the biggest-budgeted superhero movies (such as Spider-Man: No Way Home or Black Widow ) seem curiously afraid to embrace.

Read: The new Doctor Strange is not just another Marvel movie

RRR is decidedly less cautious—even a single fired bullet will sometimes get its own slow-motion star treatment, as it blasts gracefully through the air toward a particular evildoer. No self-aware jokes are let loose to undermine the melodrama, and while most of RRR ’s many action scenes are overwhelming in scale, they also all manage to feel thematically different. The tale follows two freedom fighters, both loosely based on real-life figures from early-20th-century Indian history (though the script is entirely fictitious): Bheem, a defender of the Gond tribes looking to rescue a local girl kidnapped by the British, and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan), who, in the film, is a military officer for the empire and secretly hopes to use his position to foment rebellion.

Though they share a hatred for the British, Bheem’s and Raju’s missions are often at cross-purposes, and the script delights in bringing the pair together as friends against all odds. After extended prologue scenes that separately depict their martial prowess, the movie finally unites them about 45 minutes in, when they both chance upon a train accident on a bridge that endangers a child. Bheem and Raju, despite never having met, immediately lock eyes from thousands of yards away and execute a complicated rescue. One of them charges forward on a horse, the other on a bike, and then they both do a series of gymnastic jumps that involves swinging from the bridge on ropes and passing a flag back and forth. (Almost every martial sequence in RRR is very difficult to describe in words, as should be the case for any good action movie.)

After all this, the boy is rescued, Bheem and Raju’s friendship is forged, and the film’s title finally flashes on-screen in full, as if Rajamouli is just now acknowledging that he’s earned the audience’s attention for the rest of the adventure ahead. Montages follow of the leads palling around, along with a masterful dance-off, multiple romances, plenty of tense fight scenes, and lots of lip-curling villainy from the occupying Brits. The thrill of RRR is not the density of its storytelling, though—it’s the exuberance of it.

I’ve invoked Marvel movies—plenty of which I enjoy—because they’re the most common example of the current American blockbuster style, one that lavishes hundreds of millions on intricate CGI action shots that often end up feeling airless, and in which even the grandest battles are executed with a depressing sameness. In those movies, giant monsters are defeated, and portals in the sky are closed, but seeing a film as visually inventive as RRR serves as a reminder of how much modern action usually follows a formula. If wonder is to be consistently found on the big screen, then Hollywood has plenty of new lessons to learn from its best competitor.

‘RRR’: Review

By Tara Judah 2022-04-08T09:12:00+01:00

S.S. Rajamouli smashes records with his big-screen spectacular

RRR

Source: Media House Global

Dir/scr: S.S. Rajamouli. India. 2022. 180 mins.

When it comes to spectacle, S.S. Rajamouli delivers. And then some. His latest action-packed audience-pleasing adventure epic  RRR  has smashed numerous box office records and helped revive cinema-going, especially for the domestic market. Riotous good fun from start to finish, RRR , a fictionalised account of two real-life revolutionaries fighting against the British Raj and Nizam of Hyderabad in 1920s India is being deservedly championed for reminding audiences what big screen entertainment is all about.

Big, bold and bombastic, this is big screen entertainment at its best.

The second most expensive Indian film ever made, with a budget of $72 million (second only to 2018’s 2.0 which came in at $75 million), with the highest opening day collection by an Indian film ($31m), RRR has also just taken the mantel as the fifth highest grossing Indian film of all time (at the time of writing it has taken $99m at the global box office, with $65m of that from its opening weekend, and admissions continue to climb). Yet perhaps  RRR was   a sure thing given Rajamouli’s previous success with his Baahubali films; Baahubali: The Beginning (which took more than $100m globally) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (which took $254m globally), and his two big star lead actors, N.T. Rama Rao Jr, grandson to Telugu actor politician N.T. Rama Rao, and Ram Charan, both of whom are multi award-winning performers. But what is most remarkable about  RRR , however, is its deeply affecting tone.

N.T. Rama Rao Jr. (aka Jr. NTR) plays the kind-hearted Komaram Bheem, revolutionary of the Gond tribes, while Ram Charan is Alluri Sitarama Raju, who waged armed revolution against British colonial rule. The similarities to their real-life counterparts are slight, with Rajamouli’s epic imagining what might have happened if the pair had met during the undocumented periods in their lives before their fights for India’s independence truly took hold.

The film begins in the Adilabad Forest, with the first ‘R’ accounted for – Sto R y – where a young girl, Malli (Twinkle Sharma) is taken from her mother at the behest of the British governor’s wife, who thinks the young girl’s henna artistry and charming nightingale song would make her an ideal addition to the mantelpiece. This is the narrative act that will later put everything in motion for Bheem.

The second ‘R’ comes from Fi R e, where we are first introduced to Raju (Charan), who will do anything to get a promotion – including a single-handed fight sequence that defies the odds and probably gravity just to prove his indomitable spirit, otherworldly strengths and oddly aligned allegiance to the crown. Set on the outskirts of Delhi, where riots are being led by Lala Lajpat Rai, Raju must do more than just ‘hold the line’ if he wants to get noticed. The action sequence that follows is nothing short of incredible, with Raju emerging as a jaw-dropping physical force to be reckoned with. This chapter also includes what must be the most impressive literal crowd scene (populated by people, not CGI) since Ben Hur.

Finally – although at less than an hour into the 180-minute epic – the third ‘R’ is revealed – Wate R – which properly introduces Bheem, presented as the “shepherd” of the Gond tribes, on a mission (undercover as Akhtar) to retrieve the lost lamb Malli and return her to her mother, family and village. But Bheem is soon surpassing what might be reasonable expectations of a shepherd: wearing extremely short shorts, with dramatically dripping blood running down his face and upper torso, Bheem takes on a wolf and a tiger – both of which move in decidedly marvellous and unexpected ways, with all the animals in this production being computer generated.

The central conflict comes from the British wanting Bheem captured and Raju being the man to do the job. But plot becomes secondary in this over-the-top action adventure, where fantastically choreographed set pieces – including a human pyramid of colossal proportions that not only seems to defy physics but that also has a touch of the Busby Berkeley about it – take centre stage. RRR’s set pieces, which are matched only by the utterly charismatic performances of its two leads (who, for all of their earth-defiant fighting might as well be literal superheroes) give every instalment of the Marvel multiverse a run for their money.

The film’s early domestic success comes just as two of India’s biggest cinema chains, PVR Cinemas and Inox Leisure, merged to form a mega-circuit of 1,546 screens, and already RRR has had a significant impact in drawing domestic audiences away from smaller screens and into potential post-Pandemic recovery. (Although box office notched an impressive $515.5m in 2021 – an increase of 56% on 2020 – it is still at just 37% of where it was at before Covid hit.)

It’s no surprise. Composer M.M. Keeravani has crafted incredibly catchy tunes, which Rajamouli chooses to repeat like a heartbeat throughout, making the final crescendo even more satisfying. A Sreeker Prasad’s editing is so dynamic that the whole thing - at three hours, and with an intermission – feels like it flies by in an instant. For all of its historical absurdity – realism is nowhere to be seen here – there is no denying that Rajamouli has delivered exactly what audiences want: big, bold and bombastic, this is cinema entertainment at its best.

RRR Movie Review

There are no historical records of Komaram Bheem (a revolutionary tribal leader from Asifabad in Telangana) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (a freedom fighter from the Visakhapatnam region in Andhra Pradesh) ever meeting each other and becoming united in their fight against the British. Director SS Rajamouli gives us a slice of alternate history where the two coincidentally met and became the best of friends. Bheem (Jr NTR) is a Gond tribal who is akin to a guardian angel to his tribe. When a high ranking British official Scott (Ray Stevenson) abducts a little girl on the behest of his wife (Alison Doody) and takes her to Delhi, Bheem sets off on a mission to rescue her. Ram (Ram Charan) is an officer in the British police and is literally a one-man army seemingly loyal to the British crown. Chance leads to a meeting between them. They become fast friends but Ram arrests Bheem as he’s wanted by the British. Later, he has a change of heart and after many melodramatic moments, the two friends rescue the girl and vow to lend their lives to the freedom struggle. Rajamouli has set the Hindi version in Delhi and nearby environs. The film is mounted on a lavish scale. It begins with a huge crowd scene where thousands have gathered to mark their protest against the arrest of Lala Lajpat Rai. The scene has Ram literally jumping in the midst of the crowd to catch a stone thrower and it’s an exhilarating piece indeed. The director gives us many such set pieces. One involves Bheem facing off against a wolf and a tiger. The rescue scene in the beginning where Bheem and Ram meet, their fight sequence, the Nacho nacho dance off, everything is big and beautiful. The climax fight scene, where the two square off against an entire battalion, is the most intricately woven action sequence you’ll see in the current times. The use of VFX and 3D technology is notches above anything that’s been done in India. And everything is imaginatively put together. Having the technology and knowing how to utilise it to maximum effect are two different things. And this knowledge is what sets Rajamouli apart from the others. So what’s the catch? Well, in his films like Magadheera, Eega, or the Baahubali franchise, what stood out was the emotional core of the film. The story was the best part about these films. Intelligent use of technology stylised the substance. Hell, you wanted to know why Katappa killed Baahubali... RRR is Rajamouli’s most underwhelming film yet in terms of an emotional connect. Perhaps we’re guilty of expecting the moon from him. Both Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju were historical figures who led extraordinary lives. Their ideals, their philosophy, their contribution to the freedom struggle need to be charted out. Rajamouli has both the means and technical finesse to chalk out their actual biopics but strangely chose to weave a fictional tale around them. The director sure knows how to extract performances from his cast. Both Ram Charan and Jr NTR have acted their hearts out. They’re supposedly friends in real life and that accounts for the camaraderie between them on screen. The film couldn’t have been made if there were any ego hassles between them. They complement each other to such an extent that they remind us of Jai and Veeru from Sholay. The roles are physically taxing. Both are seen carrying each other for quite a period of time but have done it gladly. They both have a good physique, which makes all the feats of strength that they perform seem plausible. And both possess good dancing skills which they make ample use of. The film serves as a launching board for both for the North audience. They’re not chocolate boys but men and along with Prabhas and Allu Arjun, can surely give the Bollywood A-listers a run for their money. Cinema is becoming pan-Indian and that’s a good thing. Alia Bhatt, as Ram’s fiancee is good in her extended cameo and so is Ajay Devgn as Ram’s father. The film rests squarely on the shoulders of its two leads and they’ve given their best to it. It’s as close as you get to a Marvel film in terms of sheer visual delight…stop looking for something more than that and you’ll be fine.

RRR Story: Ramaraju and Bheem become close friends when they cross paths in Delhi. What happens when they come to know each other’s true intentions? RRR Review: The last time director SS Rajamouli managed to wow the audience was in 2017 with the film Baahubali: The Conclusion . It took him five long years for him to conceptualise his next film RRR (also dubbed in Hindi), shoot and bring it to the silver screen. Pulling off a multi-starrer with Jr NTR and Ram Charan in the lead roles might seem an accomplishment in itself. But Rajamouli manages to deliver even when it comes to the story. RRR runs on a relatively simple premise. There’s ‘fire’ – an angry, young police officer Ramaraju (Ram Charan) who is both revered and feared by the British. He has done their every bidding for years, he is the one they sic on anyone they want to capture and yet, he is the one who’s never given enough respect due to the colour of his skin. Then there’s ‘water’ – sweet, simple, innocent Bheem (Jr NTR) who has brute strength but uses it only when it serves his purpose. He’s a Gond tribal who has come to the city to rescue a young girl called Malli, who was taken away by Lady Scott (Alison Doody), to be the singing doll ‘on (her) mantelpiece’. But that is just the beginning of the tale. Rajamouli’s new calling cards seem to be building new world. Because, despite being based on two revolutionaries from history, RRR has a story that’s completely fictional. Delhi of the 1920s becomes his new canvas. Bheem might have fought against the Nizams, so much so that one of them finds it imperative to warn the British that he’s not to be taken lightly. But he also finds shelter with Muslims in Delhi. Ramaraju might seem like a well-trained soldier who will follow instructions blindly but he also seems to have a past no one but his uncle (Samuthirakani) knows about. Scott (Ray Stevenson) might believe ‘brown rubbish’ deserve even a bullet to be wasted on them but Jennifer (Olivia Morris) seems more empathetic. This is not the freedom movement where you turn the other cheek, this is the one where you use your hands as weapons. The first half of RRR runs like clockwork. There’s the emotional core in Malli, there’s the song and dance with Naatu Naatu (it'll make you smile) and a friendship explored through Dosti , there’s even a few laughs whenever Bheem tries to befriend Jennifer. Cinematic liberties are taken but they don't seem as noticable as in the later portions, half where the film falters a bit. Some scenes seem to drag frustratingly because we already know something a core character doesn’t. The way Ramaraju’s fiancé Sita (Alia Bhatt) is woven into the narrative, apart from Ram Charan’s transformation to another look also seem forced in a tale that was smooth sailing. After the way Bheem is set up effortlessly despite nothing much being told, the way Ramaraju’s story unfolds seems strained. The climax leaves more to be desired. The good thing however is that the film manages to surprise you. Rajamouli also manages to use certain tropes set up in the initial portions of the film in the latter portions cleverly. None-the-less Rajamouli manages to pull off something people have been pining for – a commercial, action drama that will keep you thoroughly entertained – which it does. The length also doesn’t prove to be a hindrance, thanks to a tight screenplay. The VFX in certain portions could've been better. Jr NTR pulls off his career’s best performance. He’s charming as Bheem, especially in the emotional bits and his desperation to find Malli comes through well, so does his love for Ramaraju. Ram Charan also does well, pouring soul into the transformations his character goes through. Tarak and Charan’s roles require them to have chemistry, which they do. Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran and others play their parts well. Olivia in particular manages to win your heart. Alison and Ray breeze through their roles. Keeravani's OST for the film might not be for everyone but he does well with the BGM. Senthil's camerawork is a delight too. RRR is not perfection by any means because after the way Rajamouli pulls off certain scenes, you wonder if he could’ve done a better job in others. But watch this one this weekend if you’ve been longing for a good action packed drama. Especially so if you're a fan of the lead duo. Also See: 'RRR' Box Office collections day 1: SS. RRR

“Delirious” is the word to describe S.S. Rajamouli’s Indian action-adventure film that has become a worldwide phenomenon both in theaters and on Netflix since its summer release.

Related Stories

Netflix's '3 body problem' draws fire in china, praise from u.s. conservatives, james zimmerman's acclaimed nonfiction book 'the peking express' set for movie adaptation (exclusive).

Although the central characters are based on real-life historical figures, RRR (the title stands for “Rise, Roar, Revolt”) is strictly fictional, as one of the most extensive opening disclaimers ever seen onscreen takes pain to emphasize. (We’re also assured that all of the animals seen in the film, and there are plenty, are strictly CGI. Which is definitely a good thing for them.)

We’re introduced to the lead characters in two bravura action sequences before the opening credits, which don’t appear until some 40 minutes into the film. Ramo Rao Jr. plays Bheem, a burly member of the Gond tribe who attempts to trap a wolf only to come into hand-to-paw combat with a rampaging tiger, whom he manages to subdue through a combination of cunning and superhuman strength. Charan plays Raju, a seemingly superhuman Indian member of the British police who, when first seen, dives into a raging mob of what seems like thousands of rioting Indians to subdue a criminal and somehow manages to fight all of them off successfully.

When a little girl from his tribe is abducted by an evil British governor (Ray Stevenson, leaning heavily into his cartoonish role) who regards Indians as “brown rubbish,” and his equally wicked wife (Alison Doody, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ), Bheem embarks for Delhi on a rescue mission. There he encounters Raju in an action-movie version of a “meet cute,” the pair making their acquaintance via a daring joint rescue of a boy from a burning river in a sequence that rivals anything James Cameron or Steven Spielberg has ever devised.

And, of course, there are musical numbers, including the instant classic “Naatu Naatu,” in which Raju and Bheem engage in a frenetically athletic dance-off with rhythm-challenged Brits that would have made MGM’s Arthur Freed proud. (I watched the film on Netflix, and can only imagine the hysteria the scene must have induced in theaters.)

Director Rajamouli, who in just seven years is already responsible for three of India’s highest-grossing films of all time, displays his obvious love of popular cinema in every wildly colorful, overstuffed frame. No matter that the CGI or aerial wire work is sometimes all too obvious, or that the frequent use of slow-motion borders on parody. It’s all presented in such visually dazzling fashion that your eyes are fully satisfied before your brain can make any objections.

And the two endlessly charismatic lead actors display such dynamic physicality in their hyper-muscular performances that they fairly burst from the screen. Their characters provide the most evocative screen bromance since Butch and Sundance.

Normally, when a movie or show fluctuates in tone and pulls elements from many different genres, it often turns out very convoluted not knowing what type of story it wants to be.  This is definitely the case with many blockbusters.  Most try to include tropes and tools from a handful of different genres which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however nine times out of ten they end up falling flat causing the narrative to be very dull.  This is the polar opposite of S.S Rajamouli’s ‘Rise Roar Revolt’, otherwise known as ‘ RRR’ .

The primarily Telugu-spoken film follows a fictional story between two real-life characters who try to fight back against the brutally real British colonization of India in the 1920s.  The first of the movie’s two protagonists is Bheem, a warrior sent to rescue a girl kidnapped from his village by British troops who is played by N.T. Rama Rao Jr .  The other main protagonist is Raju, an officer in the British Army who is tasked with stopping Bheem and is played by Ram Charan .  The film also stars Alia Bhatt , Ray Stevenson , Olivia Morris , and Alison Doody .  This harrowing story is a tale of friendship, liberation struggles, crazy action sequences, and stimulating musical pieces.

‘RRR’ – The Powerful

Despite the story being fictional, the two revolutionaries that the film follows actually existed and the backdrop of British colonization of India obviously took place.  The film has its lighthearted moments which will be touched on later in this review, however, it does not shy away one bit from showcasing the brutality that the various people and tribes of India endured during British colonial rule.  Whether in the clash sequences between British police and protestors, the prison and torture scenes, or when seeing a girl be kidnapped from her village to be a servant in the governor’s mansion, the film does a superb job of conveying the trauma that victims of oppression and imperialism feel.

The viewer is also able to feel the conflict of Raju’s character as an Indian man in the British colonial army.  Eventually, the film shows us why this character partakes in the suppression of his fellow countrymen, how he found himself in this position, and what has led him here.  He finds himself making many decisions that really violate his sense of identity and own well-being.  The various characters in the British governance of India such as Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Edward Sonnenblick all do an effective job in portraying the attitudes that the colonizer has against the colonized.

The Bonkers

The film goes all out in its wild, wacky, and wonderfully over-the-top style of entertainment.  Beginning with the many action sequences, the film utilizes slow-motion as much as it pleases.  This can very easily become obnoxious and annoying to the viewer.  However, the film seems to almost be aware of this fact and finds a way to somehow embrace the over-the-top nature of repeated slow-motion shots, which miraculously stick the landing.  The unapologetic use of slow-motion multiple times throughout every action sequence greatly enhances their entertainment and overwhelms the viewer with excitement.  The use of slow-motion especially enhances the entertainment of these scenes during absolutely bonkers moments such as when a character jumps out of a truck carrying two torches with a hoard of tigers, leopards, bears, and wolves at his side.  Another one of these moments is when a character swings a motorcycle around his head to fend off approaching enemies.  The use of slow-motion is not only acceptable, but welcome with open arms.

Another wonderfully wacky aspect of this film is the exuberant musical pieces throughout.  Some are exciting and moving songs that play while the action on screen is taking place.  Others are actual musical sequences that feature the characters singing and dancing.  This is absolutely not an exaggeration, but the song ‘Naacho Naacho’ will be one the viewer will listen to on repeat for days after seeing this movie.  The music, composed by M.M. Keeravani with lyrical contributions in Hindi as well as Telugu from Riya Mukherjee , Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry , Chandrabose , and Varun Grover along with vocals provided mainly by Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj , make for some of most powerful musical moments seen in any film in years.  While there are many light-hearted moments filled with music, there are also a handful of scenes where music is used to evoke a more serious emotional effect in an effort to show the many sides of oppression at the hands of a powerful empire like England.

The Well-Crafted

‘RRR’ is not only a great blockbuster and a fantastic spectacle film, it is also an exceptionally well written story.  S.S Rajamouli and Vijayendra Prasad’s script takes the time to introduce characters that are not only original but also have reasonable motivations for the audience to buy into.  It is impossible to count the number of times, especially in blockbusters, where characters did not have a believable or unique drive in taking the actions that they do.  This is especially engaging to watch during scenes of conflict when certain characters both have empathizable motivations for what they are doing, yet that is what brings them into an inevitable impasse with each other.

The story also features many twists and turns, none of which are unoriginal.  They feel earned, realistic, yet unpredictable at the same time, a very difficult point to find in any type of story.  The dialogue is also witty when it is able to be, empowering when it has earned itself to be, and sensitive when it has to be.  There are a few lines that did feel as if they were there simply because they had to be, but they are very few and far between so this is the most minor of nitpicks.  ‘Rise, Roar, Revolt’ or ‘RRR’ is one of the best films of the year and deserves the ever-growing word of mouth it is getting.

Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV. media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed. ”

RRR

If the detailed social realism of the Dardenne brothers represents one kind of cinema, RRR is its polar opposite. S.S. Rajamouli’s three-hour-plus epic is a riot of outrageous spectacle, gravity-defying stunts, colour, song and dance, big emotions and a menagerie of CG animals. It feels like the kind of film that looks great in a clip on Twitter but is disappointing when you sit down and watch the whole thing. But have no fear — RRR (it stands for “Rise! Roar! Revolt!”) is a big, gaudy, sledgehammer-subtle slice of escapist cinema that is fun from first frame to last.

RRR

Set in 1920s India, the plot, as it is, pits soldier Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and villager Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr) against the British Empire, represented by Governor Scott Buxton (Ray Stevenson, terrible) and his even more vindictive wife Catherine (Alison Doody, who wields a particularly nasty whip as a reminder of her Indiana Jones days), after the Brits kidnap Bheem’s kid sister. Raju and Bheem are introduced in fantastic fashion — the former performing an in-camera version of The Matrix Reloaded ’s ‘burly brawl’ to apprehend a wrong’un, the latter outrunning a wolf and then shouting down a tiger — and then come together to save a little boy in a river on fire (don’t ask) using a motorcycle, a horse, a rope and a ridiculous feat of timing that puts Spider-Man bridge-rescues to shame. This is all in the first half hour.

RRR never runs out of steam — the dust-ups of the final jungle battle feel as fresh as the opening scene.

From here, the inventiveness and originality of the action escalates to giddy levels, often completely oblivious to the laws of physics. The quality of the VFX is variable but it doesn’t matter, partly because Rajamouli has got such a great eye for brazen movie heroics and partly because it has so much spirit it is easy to be carried along (to wit, there is a fantastic set-piece as Raju batters Brit stooges while being hoisted aloft on Bheem’s shoulders).

RRR

In-between the fighting there are heavy-handed, John Woo-esque thematics (loyalty, brotherhood, identity), low comedy as Bheem tries to woo English rose Jenny (Olivia Morris), and catchy musical numbers — the best of the bunch being a dance-off as Raju and Bheem show the stiff shirts of the Raj how it’s done. The plotting is creaky and the writing ham-fisted (“Take the special forces and nail the bastards”), but it wins the day thanks to Rajamouli’s bravura, the infectious charisma of Charan and Rama Rao Jr, ace filmmaking talent (M.M. Keeravani’s huge score, A. Sreeker Prasad’s propulsive editing) and the imagination of the stunt team. RRR never runs out of steam — the dust-ups of the final jungle battle feel as fresh as the opening scene — meaning that 185 minutes run by in the blink of a digital tiger’s eye.

Positive Messages

The movie does promote the idea that you match violence with violence. But it also shows the strength in community and teamwork.

Positive Role Models

Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju are incredibly courageous in the face of prejudice and evil. They both realize that teamwork and putting aside their differences will help their cause.

Diverse Representations

The film is set in India and the majority of the cast are native to the country, including the heroes of the piece. The film is very much male-led however, with few female roles of any real note.

Violence & Scariness

The uprising at the core of the film is very violent. There are brawls and bystanders are hit over the head with rocks and bats. Several brutal deaths. The cracking of bones and bloody faces. Women and children get caught up in the crossfire, being shot and even abducted. There are many explosions and a multitude of weaponry including crossbows, arrows, and cannons. Characters are tortured for information, and are whipped in front of the public as punishment. There are fights between wild animals and humans, the former shot at, the latter mauled. The colonialists beat up helpless Indians, and refuse to use bullets as they are too expensive, killing innocent people using brute force, such as being hit over the head with a branch.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that RRR is a hugely entertaining Indian blockbuster with violent scenes throughout and some racist language. The central theme is that of an uprising, standing up and showing courage in the face of tyrannical rule. Set in 1920s colonial India, Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan Teja) begin as enemies but realize that in order to defeat the British they must join forces. The uprising itself is incredibly violent, but cinematic in its execution. There are fights between humans and wild tigers, with animals being killed and humans mauled. There are also countless deaths -- including innocent women and children -- some of which are brutal and graphic. Characters are also tortured and whipped. There is some use of "bastard" and "wanker," as well as racist language. Characters are referred to as animals and "brown buggers." This Indian production has a diverse cast -- both Telugu and English are spoken -- though it's fair to say the majority of characters, and the heroes of the piece, are men. It has a runtime of over three hours. To stay in the loop on more movies like this, you can sign up for weekly Family Movie Night emails .

BLOODY AMAZING

This film is big, what's the story.

RRR is a fictitious story about real events, focusing in on the colonialism of India at the hands of the British. Set in the 1920s, when a young girl is abducted, and her mother callously murdered, family member Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) seeks vengeance against the perpetrators, though he is coming up against a brutal, tyrannical regime. What doesn't help, is that fellow countryman Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan Teja) is working for the enemy, and he himself proves an indestructible force.

Is It Any Good?

This Indian action-drama offers viewers about as much fun as you can have with a movie. RRR is pure cinema, at times completely over-the-top and ridiculous, but remaining grounded by its historical context. The credit must go to director S.S. Rajamouli for this ambitious undertaking. He truly is a master of his craft, with some spellbinding sequences -- scenes that you may say out loud in the planning stage, but to actually bring them to life is another matter. He may not have the budget of a major Hollywood production, but it matters little such is the strength in storytelling, and his ability to create such epic set-pieces. RRR combines fantasy with realism in a striking way, and while the film tells an important tale, above anything else, it's just purely, and utterly entertaining.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the violence in RRR . How did it make you feel? Did it add to the story? Do some types of media violence have different impact than others?

The movie is set in the 1920s during colonial India. What do you know about this period? Why is it important to look back on the past? What can we learn from it?

Discuss some of the racist language used. What purpose did it serve the story? How did it make you feel hearing these things in the film?

The movie has very little female representation . Did you find this problematic? Why, or why not?

The film is a fictitious account of real events. What other movies have you seen that has taken this approach?

RRR Review: Jr NTR, Ram Charan Give Sweeping Saga Of Hyper-Heroism All They Have

RRR review (Courtesy: rrrmovie )

Cast:  N.T. Rama Rao Jr, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn

Director:  S.S. Rajamouli

Rating:  Two stars (Out of 5)

In S.S. Rajamouli's new and characteristically overblown action extravaganza, bowdlerized history yields a misshapen monster of epic proportions. Yes, the film is exceedingly effulgent in terms of scale and ambition, but it is a mess that trivialises the under-documented history of tribal resistance against the British Raj and other forces of exploitation that have never ceased to thrive.

Everything in this sweeping saga of hyper-heroism is written in CAPITAL LETTERS, leaving no space for the little inflections and the occasional punctuations that could add depth to the tale of two warring titans fighting against all odds.

The nuance of human struggle, the tenacity of marginalized communities and any meaningful detailing of time, place and characters are beyond the ken of RRR because the movie is intent on wielding the broad brush of fantasy and mythologizing the real battles that real people fought in real terrains a century ago.

RRR has no dearth of visual spectacle and masculine grandstanding, neither of which lends the film any novelty. Ram Charan and NTR Jr throw all their starry weight behind the endeavour and 'manfully' front quite a few of the film's set pieces (including one that has the two actors dancing in tandem with gay abandon). However, what goes before and comes after these packaged 'highs' are more often than not hard to swallow.

The film rings hollow because it never pauses for breath and does not grant its two male protagonists anything akin to recognizable human qualities although they do constantly harp on love and longing. One represents fire, the other water - this is spelt out in a protracted prelude - but what dominates is blood. A lot of it is spilled, but our two heroes are full-blooded warriors. They stand firm against the atrocities that they and their people are subjected to.

One of them, Ram Charan in the guise of a tough British-era policeman A. Rama Raju, charges into an agitated crowd of thousands when a stone is hurled at his bosses. He is surrounded and beaten up by a section of the mob but he comes out of the confrontation almost in one piece, barring a bruise here and a sprained muscle there.

The other protagonist, a simple-minded and idealistic Gond tribal Kumram Bheem, is played by NT Rama Rao Jr. The man kills a tiger barehanded. The deed done he apologizes to the dead animal for having slain it for the greater good. Don't ask what that 'greater good' is, or at least not so early in the movie.

Rama Raju, likewise, is a forest dweller and a sharpshooter who serves the Empire with boundless zeal. He, too, has a cause infinitely greater than the one he seems to be espousing at first flush - he is in line for a promotion owing to the efficiency that he displays in battering "brown rubbish" into submission.

Rama Raju's backstory, briefly hinted at in the first half of the punishingly long film, features Ajay Devgn in a cameo. The other hero's background is revealed right at the outset of the three-hour film - a tribal girl is summarily taken away a British officer's wife and the man commits himself to freeing her from captivity.

The might of the British is represented in RRR by the brutal Governor Scott Buxton (Ray Stevenson) and his vicious wife (Alison Doody). They possess no humanity at all - they treat Indians like animals but they themselves are worse than animals. The film loses no opportunity to rub that in. Narrative subtlety and psychological ambiguity aren't Rajamouli's forte, certainly not in this film.

The take-no-prisoners style and substance of RRR are targeted at fans of Rajamouli's brand of cinema. They will most definitely find a great deal of value in the grandly conceived and choreographed action and the headily heightened emotions. This critic, however, has no patience for a movie that believes that a hero has no right to a moment or two of silence or contemplation in an action drama. When will men in an Indian action movie - or any action movie, for that matter - return to walking like a normal human being and not fly like a bird, leap like a lion and fight like an ape?

The writer-director known for his penchant for fantasy and mythology incorporates both in his reimagining of the lives of two real-life revolutionaries who stood up against unspeakable injustice in the first half of the 20th century in what is now Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. In doing so, he takes the wind out of the history that he so cavalierly fictionalizes.

RRR appropriates the struggle of forest dwellers and tribals and uses it as a mere pretext for an SFX-laden, power-packed cinematic blitzkrieg that flattens all possibility of a genuinely empathetic account of the resistance and rebellion of oppressed people.

The film - it is upfront about the fact that it is a work of fiction - reduces the Rampa rebellion of 1922 (led by Alluri Sitaram Raju) and the Telangana rebellion of 1946 (led by Komaram Bheem) to two broad events condensed into a contemporaneous whole. One centres on the enslavement of a little Gondi girl by the Britishers and the other on a plan to fire up (in a literal sense) a community of forest dwellers.

RRR fancifully transforms one of the rebels with a cause into a personification of Lord Ram and his patient, forever-in-waiting life partner into Sita - that is the name that the character played by Alia Bhatt goes by. His fights take place in and around forest areas - in the climax, he trades British guns and bullets for a good old set of bow and arrows - but no mention is ever made of land forcibly taken away and rights trampled upon.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

Ditto for the character of Bheem, who develops a soft spot for Governor Scott's comely niece Jennifer (Olivia Morris) but does not abandon his mission to liberate the Gondi girl imprisoned in the palatial gubernatorial residence. The Gond hero is allowed to acknowledge his identity but his battle on behalf of his people pans out on a blurry canvas that gives reality a wide berth.

RRR is a big-budget production that does not scrimp on anything at all. It lays it on thick - the background score does more than its bit to help. Ram Charan and NTR Jr, too, give it all they have. All of this might have added up nicely and the flair and flash might have genuinely lit up the screen had RRR not been what it essentially is - a willful mockery of a history that is crying out for more thoughtful and respectful treatment.

RRR Movie Review

Release Date : March 25,2022

123telugu.com Rating : 3.5/5

Starring: N. T. Rama Rao Jr, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Shriya Saran, Alison Doody, Ray Stevenson, Rajeev Kanakala, Rahul Ramakrishna

Director: S. S. Rajamouli

Music Director: M. M. Keeravani

Cinematography : K. K. Senthil Kumar

Editor: A. Sreekar Prasad

It would not be an exaggeration to say that RRR is the mother of all India films. Be it the scale, director, star cast and release, everything is so huge with this film. After a wait of five long years since it was announced, the Rajamouli period drama starring NTR, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgan and Ram Charan has finally hit the screens today. Let’s see whether it lived up to its mega hype or not.

The film is set in the 1920s when British rule was at its peak in India. A small girl from a tribal village in Telangana is taken away as a slave by the British officers. In comes the mighty Bheem(NTR) who belongs to the same tribe and takes on the responsibility of bringing the girl back. But he has to go through a mighty British cop Ram(Ram Charan) who is on his own goal against the British. What will Bheem do now? How will he face Ram? What is Ram’s personal goal? Will Bheem and Ram patch up for a common cause? To know the answers, you need to watch the film on the big screens.

Plus Points:

Rajamouli has made sure that RRR is bigger and grand in every aspect. One cannot stop but praise him for the way he has thought of something so different and executed it in a stunning manner. RRR is filled with so many goosebump filled moments that it is hard to put them all here.

The manner in which he introduces the key characters of the film is itself a spectacle. Be it the tiger chase sequence of NTR or the crowd bashing entry of Ram Charan, Rajamouli gives thigh slapping moments to all the fans. He builds up the characters in such a way that you get connected to their stories right away and get indulged into the story telling. After a while, it is only characters that talk.

It has been three and half years since we have seen NTR on screen. But the Nandamuri hero makes up for the lost time and is mind blowing as Bheem. The innocence, screen presence, and crazy action avatar in the film is showcased in the best way possible by the star hero. NTR will move you to tears with his emotional performance in all the patriotic and friendship based scenes. Probably, one can say that RRR is NTR’s best performance to date.

Ram Charan gets a very good role which has so many variations to showcase. If Rangasthalam showed what Ram Charan was capable of, RRR will showcase Charan’s magnanimity as an actor. The way he holds all the intense emotions and emotes with his eyes is spellbinding. The manner in which his character makes key transformations is brought out so well by Charan.

One of the biggest assets of the film is the comradary between Charan and NTR. So much was said about it in the promotions and it reaches all the expectations. The bromance between the two stars is so good to see on screen and will be loved by the audience. The interval bang where the two heroes go at each other is a sight that cannot be taken your eyes off. RRR banks heavily on their chemistry and is a treat to watch the stars in one frame.

Alia Bhatt makes a good Telugu debut and suits the role to perfection. Last but not the least, megastar Ajay Devgan is used as a special surprise in the film and the star hero does his best to create an impact. Shreya also gets a small but impactful role and she does well.

The factor that draws you in RRR is the unique storyline of how two heroes who play Alluri and Bheem meet at a point and how they revolt against the British. Even though Rajamouli has told that it is a fictional story, the manner in which he executes it looks so real. More than anything, the underlying emotions of every character and the impact they create on the audience is just on another level and is the driving force of RRR.

Minus Points:

Though it is not a drawback, the film’s main story takes off a bit late. As too much time is taken away for character introductions, the story gets sidelined and things start getting intense only before the pre-interval block.

The second half starts on a dull note and the pace slows down with the episode of Ajay Devgan which is strictly average. Things get back in the groove only during the last half an hour and make up an exciting finish. In a way, both Ajay Devgan and Alia Bhatt are only roped for the Hindi market and do not have much to do in the film.

Right from the beginning, the audience were told that RRR is the story of Alluri Seeta Rama Raju and Komaram Bheem. But that is not the case as the film does not dwell about those freedom fighters and only has their names as reference. So, all those who think Rajamouli will showcase their struggle against the British will be disappointed a bit.

Technical Aspects:

Production values by DVV Danayya are top notch and all the money spent is clearly visible in every scene which is quite grand. Music by Keeravani is very good but the BGM will surely evoke goosebumps in so many scenes. The camerawork by Senthil Kumar is top notch as the bygone era is showcased in a spectacular manner.

RRR mainly clicks because of the solid production design by Sabu Cyril. The British empire setup, props used and the sets laid will surely give a larger than life effect. Costumes done by Rama Rajamouli are authentic and especially those done for Alia Bhatt are amazing. Songs are choreographed in a solid manner and especially the Naatu Naatu song is composed so well without losing the emotion. Editing is top notch and three hours of runtime will not feel lengthy at all.

Coming to the director Rajamouli, he has made one of the most intense and emotional films in Telugu. Hats off to him for thinking something out of the box and placing it amidst two big stars and showcasing some never before star aura on screen. Rajamouli is known to elevate emotions and the way he does it with the characters of Bheem and Alluri is just superb.

What’s special in RRR is that every star and character has a proper storyline and is given equal importance in the narration. Rajamouli narrates the film in a way that there is no dull moment on screen whatsoever. With RRR, he has once again proved that he is a master of story telling and can showcase the emotions in the most grand way possible.

Also, the manner in which Rajamouli draws performances from Charan and NTR is solid. He gives so many high moments for the fans and general audience to cherish. Once again, he has made Telugu cinema proud. The icing on the cake is the patriotic storyline and amazing action blocks.

On the whole, RRR is an action packed period drama that has career best performances by Ram Charan and NTR. They will stun you with their screen presence and bromance which is the biggest highlight of the film. Adding to this, the patriotic drama that is showcased makes RRR quite intense. Rajamouli once again proves that he is a master at showcasing emotions. The way he designed, adapted, and executed the period drama is stunning. The box office numbers in Telugu will speak for itself and barring a slightly slow pace in the second half and dull episode of Ajay Devgan, RRR has everything to become a blockbuster at the box office and is a film that should be watched only on the big screen.

NEW TO NETFLIX! S. S. Rajamouli’s epic,  RRR  (which stands for Rise Roar Revolt), brings two legendary revolutionaries of  Indian  independence together in Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. Though the two never crossed paths in real life, the action flick imagines what such a friendship and brotherhood would look like on the big screen.

It’s 1920, and the citizens of India live under harsh British rule. In the Adilabad forest, British Governor Scott Buxton (Ray Stevenson) and his wife, Catherine (Alison Doody), are visiting the Gond tribe. Katherine is enamored by the young Malli, who is serenading her with a beautiful song. Katherine decides to take Malli as her own child/possession, giving her parents a few pennies and a brutal log to her mother’s head for their trouble. When tribal leader, Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.), learns of the abduction, he travels alone to Delhi to bring Malli back.

Upon hearing that Bheem is coming after Governor Buxton, newly promoted Officer A. Rama Raju (Ram Charan), also known as Ram, volunteers to hunt down the tribal leader to show the Governor that he is a team player. If successful, he’ll earn the highest rank in Buxton’s guard. The resourceful Ram goes undercover, attending an independence meeting to flush out Bheem. Also, hoping to blend in, Bheem has changed his name to pass off as a commoner while looking for a way into the Governor’s mansion. This is when the beautiful Jenny (Olivia Morris) enters  RRR .

“… Ram goes undercover , attending an independence meeting to flush out Bheem.”

At some point, the heel undercover cop Ram has to meet the babyface rebel Bheem, which happens during a fiery train crash on the overhead bridge. A young boy is trapped surrounded by fire forcing the two to work together to rescue him. Now Ram and Bheem become brothers forging an invincible bond of friendship. Ram helps Bheem sneak into a party at the Governor’s Mansion, where a dance-off takes place to win the heart of Jenny.

RRR  is a three-and-a-half-hour film, and that plot synopsis barely covers the end of the first act. Not to spoil anything, but of course, Ram and Bheem learn of one another’s true identity and become bitter enemies. Then in the third act, Ram’s true purpose in the British Guard is exposed.

I know almost nothing about the hostile relationship between Great Britain and India in the late 1800s, but based on the comments we’ve received on the  Film Threat YouTube Channel,  it was terrible… oppressively bad. Ironically, I would liken the movie to  Braveheart  as it’s an epic tale of Indian independence. The battles are bloody and gory, and the set pieces are absolutely massive in scale.

Directed: S.S. Rajamouli

Written: S.S. Rajamouli, Vijayendra Prasad

Starring: Ram Charan, N.T. Rama Rao Jr., etc.

Good review. I’m a Telugu person (the original language of the film). Regarding the Second Amendment part. Here, guns are for fighting against colonialism and oppression. Not about gun rights in a free, democratic society. I’m emphasizing this because some might misinterpret its message as pro-Gun rights in an American context.

rrr movie review pdf

India has two film industries. Tollywood and Bollywood. This is a Tollywood film, and it’s brutal. After hearing Chris Gore rave about this film I thought I’d search it out on Netflix, as they have a large amount of Indian content. This film is well over 3 hours long, but it doesn’t feel it. In fact I couldn’t stop watching it. The title card doesn’t even appear until the 45 minute mark.

Be aware that this is revisionist history. There is no record of the two main leads ever meeting in real life, but the Indian citizens have imbraced this film to make it a major box office hit there.

Sad that the reviewer felt the need to warn that there is no Woke content. What matters is a compelling story well told.

I won’t give anything away. Seek out this film! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

RRR Movie Review: This Is What Every ‘Grand’ Film Has Pretended To Be But Couldn’t Because We’ve Just 1 SS Rajamouli!

Even if you haven't seen a single film before, make this your first.

rrr movie review pdf

Star Cast: Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Olivia Morris, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Alison Doody, Ray Stevenson, Shriya Saran

Director: SS Rajamouli

RRR Movie Review

What’s Good: The ambition that’s visible from scene one until the end, the crossing limits of ‘how far can you stretch?’ because you’d imagine the wildest outcome for a scene but Rajamouli would go a step ahead!

What’s Bad: Some would watch this on their TV sets, I know not everyone can have the luxury but if you can, pick the best possible screen

Loo Break: It’s 3 hours long and I’d still ask you to watch this empty stomach to avoid breaks

Watch or Not?: Even if you haven’t seen a single film before, make this your first!

Available On: Theatrical Release

Runtime: 186 Minutes

Before you read what the story is all about, trust me, it’ll sound like an ordinary ‘brutal Brits VS ingenious Indians’ story, in which a White family abducts a kid Mali because why not? They have always been doing this, and what always has been done is also taking revenge on them but trust me it hasn’t been as grand as this. So, now you know the basic outline of the story, the kid that’s abducted from the poor Indian family is protected by Bheem (Jr NTR), as the film states there’s a herdsman for every group and the Brits choose the wrong one to mess with.

Bheem clashes with Ram (Ram Charan) and grows to be his BFF without knowing that he’s working for British Government. Ram is that kind of officer, who works even on the weekend just to keep his boss happy, but internally even he wants only thing ‘revenge’ because why else would an Indian earn such a high rank in the British force? Though Ram is a frustrated employee of the company, he builds a play to earn their trust and for that, he does some pretty nasty things to Bheem. Bheem wants Mali, Ram wants revenge & you’d want to take a breath to process what happened in the last 3 hours of your life.

RRR Movie Review: Script Analysis

Every commercial masala movie before this has somewhere deep down ‘aimed’ to be larger than life, but with his vision, SS Rajamouli has time and again achieved that feat and RRR is no different. This also proves to be the classic Rajamouli case in which the screenplay eclipses everything even the story (by K. V. Vijayendra Prasad), which pinches at places due to its very ambitious runtime of 186 minutes. No, it doesn’t feel like a 3-hour film, but its second half does come with speed-breakers.

Prasad ji’s story takes sweet time to construct the past & present of Bheem, Ram but it’s Rajamouli’s screenplay that adds ‘large’ in the film’s ‘larger than life’ treatment. Prasad Ji has written the most lionized entry sequences for both Jr & Ram and has pushed the bar to a level no one would be able to touch but Rajamouli. All of this coupled with K. K. Senthil Kumar’s cinematography just feels like a cosmic magical act being performed on stage. Even in the scenes which doesn’t have much drama to showcase action, Senthil just uses ultra-wide zoom-out aerial shots to bridge two scenes.

RRR Movie Review: Star Performance

Ram Charan nails the mix of style & substance to look believable as a charming Indian in pre-independence British force. Thanks to Rajamouli, Prasad, Ram now owns Indian cinema’s best ‘one vs many’ fight sequences. I would even dare to stretch it to call it even slightly better than Jon Snow’s ‘The Battle Of Bast*rds’ in Game Of Thrones , and you can judge me on this but watch it first.

Jr NTR is the heart of Ram’s brains in the film. He shows how to display brute force in one scene & take a complete u-turn to be equally poignant in another. For some reason, throughout the film, Jr NTR’s act reminded me of how Aamir Khan would love to do such roles.

Alia Bhatt & Ajay Devgn are just about okay in their cameos. It’s like, this could’ve been done even without them but it’s good to have them. Olivia Morris, Alison Doody & Ray Stevenson are

RRR Movie Review: Direction, Music

I’d pick RRR over Baahubali despite a weaker core story only because the amount of risks it takes is much higher, and the way its treatment arrests you for 3 hours is much polished. Rajamouli gives you so many high-octane, adrenaline-pumping sequences that by the climax, you’d agree with my statement of ‘watching the MOST INDIAN CINEMA on-screen’.

MM Kreem completes the mystical trio of Rajamouli-Prasad-Kreem to give a ‘seat shaking’ experience taking care of your ears & strings of your heart. Usually, a film of this stature forgets to sound good along with looking good but once you’ve Kreem on board, you can just sit behind and milk the cream (okay, I was very tempted to do that).

RRR Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, RRR is what every ‘grand’ film before this aimed at being but couldn’t be because we’ve just one SS Rajamouli after all. This lives up to all the hype of ‘what’s next after Baahubali?’ with even bettering that for me.

Four stars!

OUR RATING 3.5/5

Ram Charan RRR Movie Review

Set in the Adilabad district of pre-Independent India in the 1920s, Malli is kidnapped by Britishers for her lovely voice. Bheem (Jr NTR) is entrusted with bringing her back whereas Raam (Ram Charan) takes the bounty to catch him.

Did Raam catch Bheem? Or did he realise his folly and help Bheem in his endeavour is the basic premise of RRR.

Jr NTR- RRR Movie Review

When director SSR Rajamouli says that both the stars are vital for the narrative, he means it seriously. We see that in RRR where both the actors do well sticking to their strengths.

NTR playing Bheem is the emotional anchor of the whole movie. It is why he scores the brownie points. The intro is on expected lines, but the pre-interval block and Komaram Bheemudo sequence stands out. Right from the start, his character arc grows in strength before sharing it with the other star.

It brings us to Ram Charan. His character is developed keeping in mind the story of RRR. It doesn’t deviate for the sake of heroism until the last half an hour in the second half. The introduction sets things perfectly in that regard where Raam is presented ruthlessly. Compare this to Bheem, Jr NTR’s intro is more cinematic and hence seems better.

When it’s time for the climax, Charan gets the best dialogues, get up and intro meeting the hype. The ‘Alluri’ get up is especially extraordinary and he nailed it.

In the end, SS Rajamouli balances them well and gives the high moments equally. If the first half is reserved for Jr NTR, the second half of the second half is reserved for Charan. Both shine and make us believe that RRR wouldn’t be possible without them.

Rajamouli - RRR-Telugu Movie Review

The master storyteller SS Rajamouli directs RRR. It is a character drama set in the background of pre-Independence. The narrative focuses on the characters of Bheem and Raam.

There is a formulaic approach at the beginning when seen superficially, as in the beats the predictable. However, Rajamouli being the master storyteller that he is easily overcomes it with high octane intros for his stars. Such an issue never crops in our minds.

Both the stars are introduced in a fan-pleasing manner and are equally vital to the narrative. But, Bheem shines as it feels free from the chains of the narrative. It is cinematically mounted whereas Raam intro is done thematically. The latter introduces the character and also takes the narrative forward simultaneously.

The proceedings that follow are lighter vein in emotions but are essential in establishing the bond. If that isn’t the case, the core theme would have fallen flat. If not for the establishment of the friendship between the two, the pre-interval, interval and post-interval sequences wouldn’t have the same impact. This is where Rajamouli hit a sixer in the first half itself.

After a sensational interval, the second half takes time to get going. There are a couple of emotional moments that stay with us. The Komaram Bheemudo block is a highlight that puts to use the characterisation of the stars to great use thematically as well as cinematically.

On the flip side, the Bheem escape sequence and portions involving Alia Bhatt could have been done better.

Still, there are no dull moments, even if the narrative slackens. Things once again gain momentum after the transformation of Ram Charan. The pre-climax and climax are dominated by the duo. But, it’s Alluri who shines.

Overall, RRR has a fabulous first half and a slightly underwhelming, but thoroughly engaging second half. If you are a fan of either of the stars, watching RRR is a no brainer decision. In case, you are not, the grandeur, larger than life making makes it a sure shot watch.

Alia Bhatt - RRR Movie Review

Apart from Jr NTR and Ram Charan, everyone else plays bits and pieces supporting roles. Alia Bhatt has nothing significant to do barring a couple of vital moments with Tarak. Yes, Alia Bhatt is paired with Charan, but she has key scenes with Jr NTR. Olivia Morris is alright. She has the main part in the first half and gets the typical entertaining segment in the first half.

Ajay Devgn appears briefly in the flashback and is alright, as usual. Samuthirakani is good whereas Rahul Ramakrishna is dependable like always. Among the rest, Alison Doody and Ray Stevenson are alright.

MM Keeravani - RRR-Telugu Movie Review

MM Keeravani who is a regular with SS Rajamouli provides the music for RRR. The outdated musician disappointed everyone with the songs, but he makes up for it with the background score. It is terrific. Another regular with Rajamouli is Senthil. The cinematography is excellent. The forest backdrop sequences and night shots are wonderfully captured. But, that’s not it, there is more, and he has done an excellent job.

The editing could have been better. There is a perception of lengthiness, but it doesn’t affect much. The writing is alright. It hits the right notes where it matters, but that’s it.

RRR Movie Review by M9News

Final Report:

After a superb first half, the second half takes time to get going. But, it gets better and the last half an hour is excellent. The emotions are delivered and MM Keeravani plays a key role in elevation. He hits it out of the park.

— Raam and Sita’s character relationship isn’t established well.

— Komaram Bheemudo’s (song) emotions are enhanced with Jr NTR’s on-screen histrionics.

— RRR second half started with a flashback episode of Ram. Ajay Devgn and Sarojini are his parents who fight against Britishers.

First Half Report:

The first half takes off with solid intro blocks. The narrative then progresses with multiple high moments and ends with a solid interval block.

The lighter moments, Naatu Naatu song and terrific BGM hold things together in between the fabulous intros and the superb interval block.

Now, it’s all up to the second half to continue the momentum.

— Naatu Naatu is perfectly placed in the narrative. And what we have seen in the video promo is just a sample of what the actual video showcases.

— Dosti is as pleasant to watch on screen as it is to hear.

— Raju-Akthar’s first meeting action episode is lovely and lit. It’s a big treat for fans and general audience alike.

— After two back to back power packed intros the story sets the realistic mood.

— NTR Intro: The most awaited Jr NTR intro will take his ‘Tiger’ moniker to the next level. Fans will go berserk with the beastly intro. Best intro for NTR till date, undoubtably!

— RC Intro: Hugely mounted and tough to execute, but master craftsman Rajamouli succeeds in giving a powerful intro for Ram Charan. Perfect vibe set for the most tough character.

— RRR take of in a forest in Adilabad forest. Within no time, Rajamouli takes us into the world of the period setting. Everything looks grand, but simultaneously, with a realistic feel. An emotional start.

RRR Review, U.S. Premiere will begin at 11 AM IST. Stay tuned for first report and RRR Movie Review.

The long wait for over a thousand days for a new film from stars Jr NTR and Ram Charan and a new project of maverick director SS Rajamouli after Baahubali movies finally ends. RRR is all set to hit the big screens on March 25th.

RRR is undoubtedly the most awaited Telugu movie in a while. The combination of the troika – Jr NTR, Ram Charan and SS Rajamouli is the reason. For the first time since the ‘Eighties’ era, two top contemporary stars are acting together. It is a proper multistarrer in that sense.

The Mega combo and period genre has raised tremendous expectations on RRR . The openings (first day and first week) and the long run of Baahubali 2 have remained unchallenged until now. RRR is poised to break the opening records. However, it is the long run that is on everyone’s mind. The trade expects RRR to achieve the impossible with positive word of mouth.

A massive blockbuster with RRR will make all the efforts worthwhile for the two stars, Jr NTR and Ram Charan. They have dedicated so much time to a single project. It could also help spawn more similar films in the near future.

While success is necessary everywhere, a huge one in non-Telugu languages means more strength to the ambitious pan-India movies. There is already a few inline, and RRR’s success would boost their prospects.

The star pairing, larger than life making, and SS Rajamouli mark elevations are the USPs of RRR. If they work along with the highly charged emotions, the sky will be the limit for RRR’s box office performance.

As always, M9News will bring you a ‘First-On-Net’ RRR review, genuinely and honestly. Watch this space for our updates.
