Each of us is normally bound with one or other forms of curtest. We have to show courtesy, on one part to elders while they, on their part too, maintain certain principles of courtesy to be extended to their young ones. That is why the cult of courtesy is governed by the principle of “give and take”.

Courtesy and pride is a word which has comprehensive meanings. Courtesy means ”use of excellent, gentle and politeness in his behavior while dealing with others and the person who shows such behavior, is called courteous man” A courteous person has tender feelings and good wishes. He is always polite and pleasant to others. He never behaves harshly and does not injure anyone,s feelings. Christian Nestell Bovee declares it’s uniqueness  in the following words;

Courtesy deals with manners. Good manners spread love, affection, and kindness and win others’hearts and make sincere friends. Courtesy brings decency and politeness. It nourishes good wishes for others. A courteous person bears good manners for others. He is pleasant and polite to everybody. Francis Bacon highlights this concept in the following words; ‘ ‘If a man is gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world” Ralph Waldo Emerson declares;

” LIFE IS SHORT, BUT THERE IS ALWAYS ENOUGH TIME FOR COURTESY”

There are golden words for this concept: ”Think good, wish good, speak good and do good” Courtesy is a sacred emotion. It is a great blessing and endowment of Allah Almighty. A courteous person is liked and loved by all. A courteous person remains very popular among his friends and relatives. The well- behaved courteous people are the foundation of a good society and nation.The Holy Prophet (SAW) says:

”THE BEST AMONGST YOU IS THE ONE WHOSE MANNERS ARE THE BEST”

The saying shows the importance of courtesy. The Holy Prophet (SAW) himself showed a high degree of courtesy throughout his life. The Holy Prophet (SAW) gave great importance to courtesy. The Holy Prophet (SAW) condemned irrational attitude in these words; ”Do not inflict injury, nor repay one’s injury” A courteous person always shuns bad ways and follows the right one. Men have been created for perfection. The Holy Quran exhorts in these words;

”YOU ARE THE BEST OF PEOPLE EVOLVED FOR MANKIND, ENJOINING WHAT IS RIGHT, FORBIDDING WHAT IS WRONG”

A courteous man is kind and polite to everyone. He adopts good and decent manners all the time. He always respects of feelings of others. He never teases or disturbs anybody. Hazrat Ali (R.A) says; ”Meet others with smiling face, It is the very first good to others . courtesy earns good social and mutual contacts. When we say to others ”salaam” it means ”May Allah keep you in safety” In fact, we pray for the safety of the other and get the same in return. If we have good wishes for others, naturally others will also regard our sentiments and feelings. A courteous person earns great fame, even without spending a penny.

It teaches us great values. It teaches us to be ready to help others. It encourages us to join hands with those who may be in trouble. They may be sick, old or depressed. Aristotle has said: ”The goodness of good man shines through his deeds” We should not bear malice and ill-will in our hearts. We should work for the betterment of others. We should develop friendly and cordial relations with others. This is possible only through soft and polite conversation. There is a French Proverb:

”TO SPEAK KINDLY DOES NOT HURT THE TONGUE”

The elders, the seniors, and parents should act as a role model of courtesy for the youngsters and children. Teachers can play an important role in making people courteous. The value of courtesy must be kept at the priority level in educational institutions and offices.

Our Trump reporting upsets some readers, but there aren’t two sides to facts: Letter from the Editor

A more-than-occasional arrival in the email these days is a question expressed two ways, one with dripping condescension and the other with courtesy:

Why don’t our opinion platforms treat Donald Trump and other politicians exactly the same way. Some phrase it differently, asking why we demean the former president’s supporters in describing his behavior as monstrous, insurrectionist and authoritarian.

I feel for those who write. They believe in Trump and want their local news source to recognize what they see in him.

The angry writers denounce me for ignoring what they call the Biden family crime syndicate and criminality far beyond that of Trump. They quote news sources of no credibility as proof the mainstream media ignores evidence that Biden, not Trump, is the criminal dictator.

The courteous writers don’t go down that road. They politely ask how we can discount the passions and beliefs of the many people who believe in Trump.

This is a tough column to write, because I don’t want to demean or insult those who write me in good faith. I’ve started it a half dozen times since November but turned to other topics each time because this needle is hard to thread. No matter how I present it, I’ll offend some thoughtful, decent people.

The north star here is truth. We tell the truth, even when it offends some of the people who pay us for information.

The truth is that Donald Trump undermined faith in our elections in his false bid to retain the presidency. He sparked an insurrection intended to overthrow our government and keep himself in power. No president in our history has done worse.

This is not subjective. We all saw it. Plenty of leaders today try to convince the masses we did not see what we saw, but our eyes don’t deceive. (If leaders began a yearslong campaign today to convince us that the Baltimore bridge did not collapse Tuesday morning, would you ever believe them?) Trust your eyes. Trump on Jan. 6 launched the most serious threat to our system of government since the Civil War. You know that. You saw it.

The facts involving Trump are crystal clear, and as news people, we cannot pretend otherwise, as unpopular as that might be with a segment of our readers. There aren’t two sides to facts. People who say the earth is flat don’t get space on our platforms. If that offends them, so be it.

As for those who equate Trump and Joe Biden, that’s false equivalency. Biden has done nothing remotely close to the egregious, anti-American acts of Trump. We can debate the success and mindset of our current president, as we have about most presidents in our lifetimes, but Biden was never a threat to our democracy. Trump is. He is unique among all American presidents for his efforts to keep power at any cost.

Personally, I find it hard to understand how Americans who take pride in our system of government support Trump. All those soldiers who died in World War II were fighting against the kind of regime Trump wants to create on our soil. How do they not see it?

The March 25 edition of the New Yorker magazine offers some insight. It includes a detailed review of a new book about Adolf Hitler, focused on the year 1932. It’s called “Takeover: Hitler’s Final Rise to Power” and is by historian Timothy W. Ryback. It explains how German leaders – including some in the media -- thought they could use Hitler as a means to get power for themselves and were willing to look past his obvious deficiencies to get where they wanted. In tolerating and using Hitler as a means to an end, they helped create the monstrous dictator responsible for millions of deaths.

How are those German leaders different from people in Congress saying the election was stolen or that Jan. 6 was not an insurrection aimed at destroying our government? They know the truth, but they deny it. They see Trump as a means to an end – power for themselves and their “team” – even if it means repeatedly telling lies.

Sadly, many believe the lies. They trust people in authority, without questioning the obvious discrepancies or relying on their own eyes. These are the people who take offense to the truths we tell about Trump. No one in our newsroom gets up in the morning wanting to make a segment of readers feel bad. No one seeks to demean anyone. We understand what a privilege it is to be welcomed into the lives of the millions of people who visit our platforms each month for news, sports and entertainment. But our duty is to the truth.

Our nation does seem to be slipping down the same slide that Germany did in the 1930s. Maybe the collapse of government in the hands of a madman is inevitable, given how the media landscape has been corrupted by partisans, as it was in 1930s Germany.

I hope not.

In our newsroom, we’ll do our part. Much as it offends some who read us, we will continue to tell the truth about Trump.

There’s No Such Thing as an American Bible

The presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States, who weeks ago started selling shoes , is now peddling Bibles. During Holy Week.

What’s special about this Bible? So many things. For example, according to a promotional website, it’s the only Bible endorsed by Donald Trump. It’s also the only one endorsed by the country singer Lee Greenwood. Admittedly, the translation isn’t distinctive — it’s your standard King James Version — but the features are unique. This Bible includes the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and part of the lyrics of Mr. Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA.” Perhaps most striking, the cover of the Bible does not include a cross or any symbol of the Christian tradition; instead, it is emblazoned with the American flag.

While part of me wants to laugh at the absurdity of it — and marvel at the sheer audacity — I find the messaging unsettling and deeply wrong. This God Bless the USA Bible, as it’s officially named, focuses on God’s blessing of one particular people. That is both its danger and, no doubt for some, its appeal.

Whether this Bible is an example of Christian nationalism I will leave to others. It is at least an example of Christian syncretism, a linking of certain myths about American exceptionalism and the Christian faith. This is the American church’s consistent folly: thinking that we are the protagonists in a story that began long before us and whose main character is in fact the Almighty.

Holy Week is the most sacred portion of the Christian calendar, a time when the church recounts the central events of our faith’s narrative, climaxing in the death and resurrection of Jesus. That story, unlike the parochial God Bless the USA Bible, does not belong to any culture.

Holy Week is celebrated on every continent and in too many languages to number. Some of the immigrants Mr. Trump declared were “ poisoning the blood” of America will probably shout “Christ is risen!” this Easter. Many of them come from the largely Christian regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. They may have entered the country with Bibles in their native tongues nestled securely among their other belongings.

One of the beauties of the Christian faith is that it leaps over the lines dividing countries, leading the faithful to call fellow believers from very different cultures brothers and sisters. Most of the members of this international community consist of the poor living in Africa, Asia and Latin America. There are more Spanish-speaking Christians than English- speaking ones .

If there are central messages that emerge from the variety of services that take place during Holy Week, for many Christians they are the setting aside of power to serve, the supremacy of love, the offer of divine forgiveness and the vulnerability of a crucified God.

This is not the stuff of moneymaking schemes or American presidential campaigns.

It was Pontius Pilate , standing in as the representative of the Roman Empire, who sentenced Jesus to death. The Easter story reminds believers that empires are more than willing to sacrifice the innocent if it allows rulers to stay in power. The church sees Christ’s resurrection as liberating the believer from the power of sin. The story challenges imperial modes of thinking, supplanting the endless pursuit of power with the primacy of love and service.

Easter, using the language of St. Augustine, represents the victory of the City of God over the City of Man. It declares the limits of the moral reasoning of nation-states and has fortified Christians who’ve resisted evil regimes such as fascists in South America, Nazis in Germany, apartheid in South Africa and segregation in the United States.

For any politician to suppose that a nation’s founding documents and a country music song can stand side by side with biblical texts fails at a theological and a moral level. I can’t imagine people in other countries going for anything like it. It is hard to picture a modern “God Bless England” Bible with elements of British common law appended to Christianity’s most sacred texts.

I am glad for the freedoms that we share as Americans. But the idea of a Bible explicitly made for one nation displays a misunderstanding of the story the Bible attempts to tell. The Christian narrative culminates in the creation of the Kingdom (and family) of God, a transnational community united by faith and mutual love.

Roman Catholics , Anglicans and Orthodox Christians, who together claim around 1.5 billion members, describe the Bible as a final authority in matters of faith. Evangelicals, who have overwhelmingly supported Mr. Trump over the course of three election cycles, are known for their focus on Scripture, too. None of these traditions cite or refer to any American political documents in their doctrinal statements — and for good reason.

This Bible may be unique in its form, but the agenda it pursues has recurred throughout history. Christianity is often either co-opted or suppressed; it is rarely given the space to be itself. African American Christians have long struggled to disentangle biblical texts from their misuse in the United States. There is a reason that the abolitionist Frederick Douglass said that between the Christianity of this land (America) and the Christianity of Christ, he recognized the “widest possible difference.”

And while Christianity was used to give theological cover to North American race-based chattel slavery, it was violently attacked in places like El Salvador and Uganda, when leaders including the archbishops Oscar Romero and Janani Luwum spoke out against political corruption.

The work of the church is to remain constantly vigilant to maintain its independence and the credibility of its witness. In the case of this particular Bible, discerning what is happening is not difficult. Christians are being played. Rather than being an appropriate time to debut a patriotic Bible, Easter season is an opportune moment for the church to recover the testimony of the supremacy of the cross over any flag, especially one on the cover of a Bible.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Lori Coryell, 62, a retired US Air Force veteran who bought two homes in Oregon with assumable mortgages . (She's selling one of them, also with an assumable mortgage .) An assumable mortgage allows qualifying buyers to acquire the interest rate, current principal balance, and other conditions of a seller's existing loan. Not all loans can be assumed. The essay has been edited for length and clarity.

I've lived in Oregon for most of my life. In 2020, my husband and I bought a home in Beaverton for $650,000 with a 2.5% mortgage interest rate.

I'm a USAF veteran, and the home's previous owners let us know that the home had an assumable Veterans Affairs (VA) mortgage. My husband and I took an interest in this, believing it could be a valuable asset.

That's because assumable mortgages are a big deal. For the buyer, it can make or break how much house they can afford. And for a seller, it allows them to list the home at a slightly higher price as potential buyers are likely to obtain a lower interest rate.

My husband and I knew that interest rates weren't going to stay low forever. So, if we decided to sell the home in the future, the lower rate, which could transfer to the next buyer, would benefit us as the sellers — it made the whole deal very attractive.

We purchased another home with an assumable mortgage when rates were higher

We bought another home with an assumable mortgage in 2023.

My daughter, who was not expected to have a baby, ended up getting pregnant. My husband and I were very excited. It was her first child and my first grandchild, and I knew she was going to need some help with the baby.

Our Beaverton house was an hour and a half away from where she lived. We thought that moving to Gresham, which is 15 minutes away, would make a huge difference.

In Gresham, there weren't many homes for sale. That's because inventory is sparse throughout the Portland metro area. I don't think it's made the real-estate market as competitive as it was two years ago, but home prices are still pretty high.

Although there were a couple of neighborhoods that we were particularly interested in, none of the homes there met our needs. Most of the properties needed some sort of remodeling or major updating.

We looked for four to six months, and started getting discouraged. But in December, I stumbled upon a house we really liked in the area.

The home was built in the 1990s and is 2,800 square feet, with four bedrooms and 2½ baths. It was on the market for $620,000, which was on the higher end, but it had what we wanted in a home, like a master bedroom on the main floor.

When I read the home's description, it mentioned an assumable mortgage, which made the home even more attractive to us. We bought it for $615,000 and ended up paying the difference between the sales price and what they still owed on the house, which was $260,000.

We also paid them a $10,000 premium so that we could retain their VA entitlement, because mine was already being used on the house in Beaverton.

Basically, as a veteran, if you allow somebody to assume your loan, your VA entitlement goes with that loan. This means you can no longer buy another house with a VA entitlement.

Our decision to buy the house ultimately came down to two reasons: First, the interest rate was at 3.5%, a drop from the going rate of at least 7.5% back in December. Second, when we assumed the mortgage, there were only 23 years left in its term, making it a shorter duration compared to the entire mortgage term of 30 years.

For our Gresham home, the principal and interest is based on $359,000; at 7.5%, the payment is $2,510. With the assumption of the loan at 3.5%, the payment is $1,612. Compared to the latter, the savings is $898 a month.  

Or look at it this way:  Over the life of our loan, since we assumed it, it is only 23 years or 276 payments. The monthly savings of $898 times the remaining payments, is a lifetime savings of roughly $247,848.

Getting an assumable mortgage isn't easy

Assumable mortgages can be super hard to find.

As a buyer taking over an assumable loan, the biggest issue is making sure that the sellers understand they have to initiate the process with the bank.

It goes like this: The homeowner goes to their bank and tells them they are selling their house and that they want to use the assumable option on their existing loan. At that point, the bank sends the new buyers paperwork so they can pre-qualify for that loan.

Banks don't do a whole lot of assumable loans, because they don't have an incentive to like with traditional loans. They'd rather give you a 7% interest rate than a 2%.

My biggest word of advice is to be patient, because it takes the banks a long time to get the paperwork started. And the second piece of advice is be responsive.

When originating our assumable loans, we were pretty aggressive with the bank. Whenever they reached out for information, we would follow up with them that same day. You have to remain involved, engaged, and active in the process.

We're selling a home with an assumable loan — and it's tricky

After living in the home for three years, we listed it for sale in 2023. It's currently on the market for $889,000 with the 2.5% percent mortgage rate. There's about $611,000 left on the assumable mortgage.

The principal and interest on $611,000 at 2.5% is $2,414 a month. That same P&I at today's interest rate of 7.5% would be $4,272. That is a savings on interest of $1,858 every month for the life of the loan.

So far, the home has seen a lot of interest from buyers. When it first went on the market, we had 50 people come through and tour the home. We've received a few offers, and currently have a buyer going through the assumption process right now.

Owning two homes has been very stressful on our budget since I am retired on a fixed income. Any savings we have will be put back into our retirement fund once the Beaverton house closes.

The process of getting an assumable mortgage is not easy, and I would not recommend it if you are not willing to put in a little extra effort.

I feel the process is worth the effort on the buyer's side, but I'm questioning the value on the seller's side.

Our house has been on the market since December. We are working with our third set of buyers. The process just takes a long time. Hopefully, this time will be the right one.

What public k-12 teachers want americans to know about teaching.

At a time when most teachers are feeling stressed and overwhelmed in their jobs, we asked 2,531 public K-12 teachers this open-ended question:

If there’s one thing you’d want the public to know about teachers, what would it be?

We also asked Americans what they think about teachers to compare with teachers’ perceptions of how the public views them.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand what public K-12 teachers would like Americans to know about their profession. We also wanted to learn how the public thinks about teachers.

For the open-end question, we surveyed 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers surveyed are members of RAND’s American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public K-12 school teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.

Overall, 96% of surveyed teachers provided an answer to the open-ended question. Center researchers developed a coding scheme categorizing the responses, coded all responses, and then grouped them into the six themes explored in the data essay.

For the questions for the general public, we surveyed 5,029 U.S. adults from Nov. 9 to Nov. 16, 2023. The adults surveyed are members of the Ipsos KnowledgePanel, a nationally representative online survey panel. Panel members are randomly recruited through probability-based sampling, and households are provided with access to the Internet and hardware if needed. To ensure that the results of this survey reflect a balanced cross section of the nation, the data is weighted to match the U.S. adult population by gender, age, education, race and ethnicity and other categories.

Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, the teacher survey methodology and the general public survey methodology .

Most of the responses to the open-ended question fell into one of these six themes:

Teaching is a hard job

About half of teachers (51%) said they want the public to know that teaching is a difficult job and that teachers are hardworking. Within this share, many mentioned that they have roles and responsibilities in the classroom besides teaching, which makes the job stressful. Many also talked about working long hours, beyond those they’re contracted for.

“Teachers serve multiple roles other than being responsible for teaching curriculum. We are counselors, behavioral specialists and parents for students who need us to fill those roles. We sacrifice a lot to give all of ourselves to the role as teacher.”

“The amount of extra hours that teachers have to put in beyond the contractual time is ridiculous. Arriving 30 minutes before and leaving an hour after is just the tip of the iceberg. … And as far as ‘having summers off,’ most of August is taken up with preparing materials for the upcoming school year or attending three, four, seven days’ worth of unpaid development training.”

Teachers care about their students

The next most common theme: 22% of teachers brought up how fulfilling teaching is and how much teachers care about their students. Many gave examples of the hardships of teaching but reaffirmed that they do their job because they love the kids and helping them succeed. 

“We are passionate about what we do. Every child we teach is important to us and we look out for them like they are our own.”

“We are in it for the kids, and the most incredible moments are when children make connections with learning.”

Teachers are undervalued and disrespected

Some 17% of teachers want the public to know that they feel undervalued and disrespected, and that they need more public support. Some mentioned that they are well-educated professionals but are not treated as such. And many teachers in this category responded with a general plea for support from the public, which they don’t feel they’re getting now.

“We feel undervalued. The public and many parents of my students treat me and my peers as if we do not know as much as they do, as if we are uneducated.”

“The public attitudes toward teachers have been degrading, and it is making it impossible for well-qualified teachers to be found. People are simply not wanting to go into the profession because of public sentiments.”

Teachers are underpaid

A similar share of teachers (15%) want the public to know that teachers are underpaid. Many teachers said their salary doesn’t account for the effort and care they put into their students’ education and believe that their pay should reflect this.

“We are sorely underpaid for the amount of hours we work and the education level we have attained.”

Teachers need support and resources from government and administrators

About one-in-ten teachers (9%) said they need more support from the government, their administrators and other key stakeholders. Many mentioned working in understaffed schools, not having enough funding and paying for supplies out of pocket. Some teachers also expressed that they have little control over the curriculum that they teach.

“The world-class education we used to be proud of does not exist because of all the red tape we are constantly navigating. If you want to see real change in the classroom, advocate for smaller class sizes for your child, push your district to cap class sizes at a reasonable level and have real, authentic conversations with your child’s teacher about what is going on in the classroom if you’re curious.”

Teachers need more support from parents

Roughly the same share of teachers (8%) want the public to know that teachers need more support from parents, emphasizing that the parent-teacher relationship is strained. Many view parents as partners in their child’s education and believe that a strong relationship improves kids’ overall social and emotional development.

“Teachers help students to reach their potential. However, that job is near impossible if parents/guardians do not take an active part in their student’s education.”

How the U.S. public views teachers

While the top response from teachers in the open-ended question is that they want the public to know that teaching is a hard job, most Americans already see it that way. Two-thirds of U.S. adults say being a public K-12 teacher is harder than most other jobs, with 33% saying it’s a lot harder.

And about three-quarters of Americans (74%) say teachers should be paid more than they are now, including 39% who say teachers should be paid a lot more.

Americans are about evenly divided on whether the public generally looks up to (32%) or down on (30%) public K-12 teachers. Some 37% say Americans neither look up to or down on public K-12 teachers.

In addition to the open-ended question about what they want the public to know about them, we asked teachers how much they think most Americans trust public K-12 teachers to do their job well. We also asked the public how much they trust teachers. Answers differ considerably.

Nearly half of public K-12 teachers (47%) say most Americans don’t trust teachers much or at all. A third say most Americans trust teachers some, and 18% say the public trusts teachers a great deal or a fair amount.

In contrast, a majority of Americans (57%) say they do trust public K-12 teachers to do their job well a great deal or a fair amount. About a quarter (26%) say they trust teachers some, and 17% say they don’t trust teachers much or at all.

How the public’s views differ by party

There are sizable party differences in Americans’ views of teachers. In particular, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are more likely than Republicans and Republican leaners to say:

• They trust teachers to do their job well a great deal or a fair amount (70% vs. 44%)
• Teaching is a lot or somewhat harder when compared with most other jobs (77% vs. 59%)
• Teachers should be paid a lot or somewhat more than they are now (86% vs. 63%)
