Political Science Professor Cover Letter Writing Tips

When applying for a job as a political science professor, you need to show how well you communicate with people from all walks of life. You’ll be communicating with clients, opposing counsel, expert witnesses and your team on a regular basis. So it’s important that you show your strong communication skills to the hiring manager in the cover letter.

To do this, talk about how effective you are at verbal and written communication. The more examples of each type of communication (written and verbal) that you can provide in your cover letter the better!

2. Customize your cover letter

Law firms are used to receiving cover letters—so many of them in fact, that they’re often just skimmed over and not given the attention they deserve. To get noticed, you need a killer opening line and customized content outlining why you want to work for their firm.

To write an effective opening line for a law firm cover letter:

  • Reach out to people working at the agency through LinkedIn and ask for advice or help in crafting your resume/cover letter.
  • Use specific examples from past work experiences that highlight how you can contribute to this particular company’s goals.
  • Ask someone who works there what aspect of the job they found most interesting/challenging. Use this information as inspiration when writing about why you want this position.

3. Highlight intellectual curiosity and motivation

Lawyers are always looking for candidates who have a strong track record of success, but they also want to make sure they’re hiring individuals with the drive to keep learning.

To show that you have what it takes to be successful as an attorney, highlight your intellectual curiosity and motivation in your cover letter. For example, explain how you prepared for exams by reading recent case precedent or how you regularly attend networking events hosted at local law firms.

4. Proofread your cover letter

When applying for a position as an attorney, it is crucial to have a strong understanding of grammar and proper sentence structure. In your cover letter, you’ll want to avoid any mistakes in spelling or grammar. Remember that employers will look at your writing style and see if you have the necessary skills needed for the job before inviting you for an interview.

How to Build Your Resume As a Political Science Major

As a political science major, building my resume and having good experiences to put on it was hard to figure out.

Still, I scoured all my sources to list the best ways to boost your resume for political science jobs.

Building your resume

First off, any resume should have a few key components to make for a well-written, concise, and marketable read.

Always start with any personal information about yourself and a clear objective you want to set in the workplace. The objective should be one or two sentences setting goals for yourself and one main attribute.

Put where you most recently got an education from and some stand-out classes you took that show an understanding of what that job listing asks.

For example, if I were applying to be a Campaign Manager, I would list “Market Research” and “Election of 2012” as some classes I took. 

Students should also include work experiences, volunteer work, awards/honors, skills, and references. The tricky part is figuring out what experiences and skills can be essential for any poli-sci graduate and what things you can do to stand out.

A powerful tool most employers use today is LinkedIn. This platform allows for resume building and is an accessible way for students to network with other people in the same field as them and can lead to more internship opportunitie s.

You can talk to alumni from your school or others in the area, and you can ask them for advice and connections to work on your networking skills.

Internships

Internships highlight any resume as it is the best way to demonstrate you know the workforce. 

Relatively any internship will boost your application, but if you are looking for a list, this is the place.

  • Campaign Assistant/ Manager Intern 

This is an internship where you can work with local politicians to gather support for their campaign. This pertains to facilitating events and even providing organizational help with itineraries and schedules.

  • Journalism Intern

This can be very project-based depending on where you work, but it consists of writing and creating content for websites and other media. Some other things you could do are conduct interviews, run through paperwork, and provide an opportunity for a writing portfolio.

  • Research Assistant

An internship as a research assistant is available at nearly any university, especially if you are looking into graduate school there. You typically work on a professor-led research project that is ongoing and conduct studies to go with a single thesis.

  • Social Media Intern

This opportunity can vary and expand every day as social media becomes more prevalent. Creating content, working with brands, and learning how to market all come out of this opportunity and can usually be very fun!

  • Legal Intern

This is for students who have graduated law school but have not yet taken the BAR exam, but you can work at a firm doing similar things to what a career may look like for you.

Volunteer Work

Volunteer work can go a long way in demonstrating who you are as a person and the diversity of your skillset, and it can typically showcase your passion. 

As a poli-sci major, you may want to look into specific volunteer opportunities in your area, such as volunteering for a political campaign.

Leaders at the city, state, and even federal level need a campaign team with support from as many citizens as possible. Getting involved with politics shows commitment toward a cause and will give you some insight into how a campaign works.

Try to keep this neutral on your resume and not mention who the campaign is for. Instead, say you volunteered at the ‘United States presidential campaign’ or ‘California Governor campaign.’  Some companies don’t care about your political affiliation, and some company policies are against it.

Volunteering at your local city hall at the voting boxes during election time is also a great way to get in some political volunteer work. You get to aid people in the process of voting, and you’re helping your community.

Essential Skills

Certain skills can catch the eye of your employer when it comes to your resume. 

The ability to communicate and write may be something you want to highlight, as well as being able to present ideas and data. Also, being able to debate and mediate topics is critical as discussions are always being held at political events. Social media management and marketing skills are other ones to showcase.

While there are many things you can add to fit in with any political science major, this section is really about what you can bring to the table. Be conscious while picking out what you want to showcase, but don’t stress as this is just an extension of you.

Enhancing your college experience

Many colleges across the country offer an extensive amount of different programs and seminars for other specialities, and political science is one of them. Alumni, grad students, professors, and even special guests may visit your campus, so keep an eye out for what your school has to offer. 

This same thing can be said about training and certification courses. If your university doesn’t offer these opportunities, check out your local community classes to see if they are holding any open events.

When adding these experiences to your resume, be sure to mention the event name, date, and where you attended. 

If you don’t have many other experiences to fill your resume with, a quick overview of clubs that you held leadership in can be a nice addition for employers to look at.

Gearing this toward your field of study can show off some of your skills that can be applicable to the job. Clubs like Debate Team, young politician clubs, and so many more can boost your resume. 

Declaring a minor can be because you take some of your favorite classes, but you can also declare one that will add to your knowledge and “expertise.” Some that pair well with political science are history, international studies, pre-law (essential if you plan to become a lawyer), and even economics. They all provide skills that you would most likely use while working.

If you are unsure of what you could be doing or what experiences are offered at your school, be sure to talk with your college advisor or a professor to see if they know of an opportunity.

  • Target your letter to the specifications of the employer. If a detailed job description is available, study its language and look for repetition of key skills or qualifications they seek and how you embody those. If there is no job description or limited information, then research as much as you can about the organization’s mission and reflect on common values you share.
  • Research the company – its mission, brand, and culture. Think about what makes you want to work at this company specifically. Plan to include a couple of lines about this in your introductory or closing paragraphs
  • Think about the top 3-5 values, skills, or qualifications you have identified from above. What relevant skills, experience, or accomplishments demonstrate your ability to fulfill those needs or requirements?

Provide Specific Examples

  • Give examples of the experiences and skills that best qualify you for the position (the ones from your list).
  • Do not repeat everything listed on your resume as examples; instead, focus on specific key points from a couple of roles held that you could reflect on with the most detail. Employers will often have your resume as a companion document.
  • Articulate your qualifications, strengths, and interests in 3-4 paragraphs.
  • Avoid examples that are not connected to the most important needs of the employers.

Write Professionally

  • It’s important to remember this is a formal document that you can refer to even as you prepare for your interview and later stages of offer negotiation.
  • This is not a casual letter or email, so avoid contractions, informal greetings or closings, and abbreviated terms to ensure precision, accuracy, and clarity.

Entering the Job Market

A bachelor's degree in political science can lead to employment in a wide variety of fields, including business, government, media, non-profits, law, and higher education. These jobs use the analytical skills and communication abilities of political science majors.

To prepare to seek employment,

  • Consult your professors and college careers office . Seek advice about opportunities and how your own skills and achievements can best be used. It is never too early to contact your college careers office and determine how to identify and prepare yourself to apply for jobs that interest you. Many universities and colleges offer online advice and information about on-campus recruiting.
  • Prepare a resume . Emphasize broad analytical and communication skills. Highlight internship and job experiences. Ask an advisor or college career counselor to critique your resume. Make sure you have no grammatical or spelling errors.
  • Put together a sample cover letter . While a cover letter should be tailored to the specific job to which you are applying, it can be helpful to write a sample letter. Cover letters should be no more than one page and are primarily an opportunity to show how your skills match specific job requirements. Be sure to show your skills, rather than stating them. (For example, instead of listing “team player” as a skill you could write about contributions you made to a successful team project.) Be sure to proofread your cover letters for spelling and grammar. Ask a professor or advisor to proofread and critique your letter, too.
  • Seek an internship with an organization that interests you . Internships provide valuable work experience and potential professional references. APSA has internship resources to help you in your search.
  • Begin searching online to explore potential job opportunities . Find questions to ask here .
  • Tap into your networks . Alumni groups, acquaintances, and mentors can be valuable sources of career advice. Consider requesting informational interviews with acquaintances whose careers you would like to emulate. Professional networking sites like LinkedIn are also useful for researching potential career paths and contacts.

Many undergraduate political science majors continue to law school. Most colleges and universities have a pre-law advisor to assist students who are considering applying to law school. Further sources for information on legal careers and law schools include the American Bar Association , Law School Admission Council , and the National Association for Law Placement .

Master’s Degree

If you are interested in continuing your political science studies and would like to focus on a particular policy or issue area, consider pursuing a master’s degree. Master’s programs include broad professional degrees in public administration, public policy, and international or foreign affairs. There are also master’s programs which focus on specific policy issues such as security studies, political economy, international development, environmental policy, health policy, human rights, or urban planning. If you are interested in further in-depth study on a particular cultural or geographical region, consider a master’s degree in an area study such as Middle East studies, Asian studies, Latin American studies, or European studies.

To learn about these programs, consult with your advisor and political science faculty, especially faculty who specialize in the field or policy area(s) that interest you.

If you are interested in becoming a political scientist, then think about pursuing a doctoral degree. A PhD qualifies you to teach at the college and university level and certifies you as an expert in your area of specialty.

To successfully complete a PhD you will need to take coursework, pass comprehensive examinations, and write a dissertation on some aspect of original research. Some PhD students also serve as teaching or research assistants during their time in graduate school. Many individuals who purse a PhD in political science are interested in becoming university or college professors, though others use their PhD for careers in government, research, and non-profit sectors.

To learn about pursuing a PhD,

  • Discuss your interest with your academic advisor and political science professors. Ask for guidance about graduate study and about the work of political scientists.
  • Consider what area of specialty you would like to pursue. Research departments for information on graduate faculty and courses. If you decide to apply to PhD programs, your essays should ideally reference specific professors with whom you would like to study. You can find websites for most departments here .
  • You do not need a master’s degree to enter a PhD program, but you will need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

How to Apply to Our Program

In order to apply to the program, prospective students complete two parts of the application: one part is for admission to SDSU graduate studies via the university’s Graduate Admissions (steps 1-3 below), and the second part is for our departmental admissions committee through Interfolio (step 4 below). Both parts are necessary.

We have one admission cycle per year.  Applications for Fall 2024 will open on October 1, 2023.

Deadlines for Fall 2024:

  • February 1, 2024: Cal State Apply Deadline. The university-wide Cal State Apply link for Political Science will close on February 1. Late applicants may be approved to apply on a case-by-case basis. Contact [email protected] if you would like to ask whether a late application would be possible.
  • February 1, 2024: Priority Deadline for File Completion and Scholarship / Fellowship Support. The Political Science Graduate Committee will begin reviewing completed files on this date. Applicants who wish to be nominated for campus fellowships or who would like to be considered for Terhune scholarship support should complete their applications by this date, including all four steps listed below. International students are also advised to complete files by this date.
  • March 1, 2024: Regular Deadline for File Completion. Supporting documents required by Graduate Admissions and the Interfolio file for the Political Science Department should be received by this date.  

General Requirements:

  • Minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) for the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units of academic work
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Writing sample(s)
  • For international applicants: proof of English proficiency such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo
  • Upper-division coursework in Political Science or closely related disciplines (strongly preferred)
  • GRE Test is NOT required.

Steps to Apply

Step 1 - university admission.

Fill out an application with Cal State Apply by February 1.

Step 2 - University Admission

Create an my.SDSU account with the RedID number emailed to you after you complete step 1.

Step 3 - University Admission

Send official documents to SDSU Graduate Admissions by March 1.

  • See the above links for the specific list of documents required and how to submit them. You can expect to be asked for official copies of all educational transcripts, as well as proof of proficiency in English if you have not previously studied in an English-language institution.

Step 4 - Departmental Admission

Create an Interfolio file , including a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and writing sample by February 1 for priority deadline applications, or March 1 for the regular deadline. 

This qualitative portion of the application is solely for the use of the Political Science department’s Graduate Admissions Committee.  It is important that you use the link above to ensure that the documents you upload to Interfolio are linked to your SDSU application and accessible to the committee.

Please use the same name and email address used for your Cal State Apply application. 

  • Statement of Purpose:  We look for statements of about 1000 words, or up to 2 pages double-spaced. These statements are a chance for you to tell us a bit of your story, what kinds of issues or questions you are most interested in, and why you would like to pursue an MA in Political Science. 
  • Two Letters of Recommendation:  Ideally, we like to see letters from professors or instructors who know your academic skills, such as your writing and analytic abilities, and who can evaluate these objectively in the letter. Professors from upper-division or other graduate courses are preferable to those who taught you in introductory or lower-division courses. If you cannot supply any academic references, you can request letters from others such as supervisors at work who can speak to the kinds of qualities that would be relevant to your success in graduate school.  You may submit more than two letters if you like. Directions: As you create your Interfolio account, there is a link for inviting letters of recommendation. After you enter the email addresses for your letter writers, Interfolio will email each of them with a link to upload a recommendation letter directly to your file.
  • Writing Sample: Please include at least one writing sample that demonstrates your written and analytic skills.

The department will make our admissions decisions based on the entire package of materials. We review only complete files, so please make sure that you send everything early enough that your file is ready by the application deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between the priority and the regular deadline .

February 1st is the priority deadline for our first round of admission. Having a complete file by this deadline will give applicants the best possible chance for admission and eligibility for several scholarship and fellowship opportunities, including nominations for campus-wide Masters Research Fellowships and Presidential Graduate Research Fellowships, as well as departmental Terhune Scholarship support. The regular deadline (March 1) is for our second round of admissions. 

Why should international applicants meet the priority deadline on Feb 1?

Is there a form i can use for letters of recommendation, what qualifications do successful applicants have, i graduated a while ago and no longer am in touch with former professors. is it a disadvantage to use nonacademic letters.

The graduate committee in Political Science highly values academic letters of recommendation as a means to evaluate whether students possess the academic skills necessary to succeed in the program. We thus have a strong preference for letters from former professors that can speak specifically to your academic skills and potential. Even if you are not in contact with former professors, it might be worth your time to try to contact or meet with them to remind them who you are and get some kind of support from them. 

Alternatively, you may want to take a graduate course from a local university and get a new letter for your file. If you live in the San Diego area, you can do this through Open University . If neither of these options is available to you, and nonacademic letters are necessary, try to give us other indicators of your academic abilities in other parts of your application.

I live in San Diego. Can I take SDSU graduate courses prior to being admitted?

Yes. In fact, SDSU has a parallel enrollment system through its Open University program that permits anyone with at least a B.S. or B.A. to enroll in graduate courses here, with the instructor’s permission. If you were to be admitted into the program later, these courses would be treated as transfer units, of which you may have nine total. Since SDSU grad courses are 3 units each, this means that you could feasibly take up to three courses prior to admission in the program and have them count toward your program of study.

Can I attend the program part-time?

Yes. In fact, many of our students work at least 20 hours per week in addition to taking courses. To accommodate these work schedules nearly all of our courses occur in the evening between 4:00 pm and 9:40 pm. Students who work can decide how many courses they can handle at once. Full-time study would be three courses, or 9 units. Part-time study can be either one or two courses per semester. The only restriction upon taking the program at your own pace is that all degree requirements must be completed within six years.

How long does the program take to finish?

The length of time it takes to finish the program depends in large part on how much time you have to give to your studies, and how well you are already prepared to select topics for your thesis or exams. Students who take three courses per semester can complete the program within two years (or sometimes two years plus a summer), while part-time students take longer.

May I transfer coursework from another university?

You may. SDSU accepts up to 9 units of transfer coursework, if it has not already been used toward a different degree and if the Graduate Advisor finds the content to be comparable to that in our own graduate program. Generally, such determinations would be made after you are admitted and you have supplied the Grad Advisor with syllabi and written materials from these courses.

Does the program offer any financial support to students?

Yes. Departmental fellowship awards are offered to outstanding applicants. Each complete application received by the February 1 deadline is automatically considered for Terhune Scholarships that typically range from $1000-$4000. The exact amount and number of the awards, however, varies each year depending upon the pool of applicants and funds available. 

Many of our graduate students work part-time as Graduate Assistants or Instructional Student Assistants during their degree program, and this is another form of financial support.

There are a few highly competitive campus-wide fellowships that highly qualified students may receive if they are selected by the department admissions committee for nomination, and then selected by the campus-wide committee thereafter. Department nominations must be submitted in February, and students are generally notified by April if they have been awarded a campus-wide fellowship.

What courses should I register for when I join the program?

Everyone is required to take the Seminar in Research Design (Pol S 615), so that is always a safe bet for registration. 

Otherwise, you are encouraged to enroll in seminars that will fulfill core requirements, especially 675, 655, 605, and 603.

Beyond these courses, you can select any other 600-level seminars. You may also include up to three electives in your program of study, which might include courses at the 500- or 700-levels, or graduate courses from other departments.  

If you plan to complete an Advanced Certificate in Public Policy and/or the Advanced Certificate in Global Politics , you might prioritize courses that will fulfill these requirements, as well. You may count these courses toward both the certificate and the general M.A. degree. 

I was admitted on a conditional basis. What does that mean?

Admission to the graduate program on a conditional basis means that you are eligible to enroll in graduate level coursework but that your status in the program is dependent upon some requirement. For students who apply before completing their BA/BS, conditional status is lifted as soon as they provide evidence of their graduation. For others, the condition requires a minimum GPA for the first semester. Until the condition is lifted, you will lack “Classified Student Standing,” and thus not be eligible to apply for Graduate Assistant teaching positions in the department. For more specific information about the conditions of your enrollment, refer to your admission RDR (Request for Departmental Recommendation). Once you have met the conditions for classified status, you need to complete a Change in Status Form and attain the Graduate Advisor’s signature in order to register for your second semester.

Searching Job Ads

Now let's assume the imaginary student (Jane Smith) whose resume we just viewed is graduating and looking for a job.  She searches on internet job websites for local jobs and she decides to look at a list of professional job ads. (These are merely samples for the purpose of illustration.)

Writing a Cover Letter

Luckily, Jane got some advice on how to write a strong cover letter, and she writes this great cover letter applying for the position as a blood drive organizer that we just saw in the list of sample job ads. Course Description

Job Summary

The College of Literature, Science & the Arts (LSA) is hiring a Disability Culture Graduate Student Staff Assistant (DC GSSA) at a 50% appointment (20 hours/week) for the Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 terms to support the Faculty & Staff Disability Navigator program. The deadline to apply is Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 11:59pm ET.

Appointment Period:   Fall 2024 - Winter 2025 (This position is for two terms) Estimated FTE: 50% (20 hours per week)

Work Schedule: Hours to be completed between Monday and Friday (8AM?5PM), excluding seasonal days, break days, and university closure dates. GSSA will create a weekly schedule within this timeframe in collaboration with their supervisor. Compensation: This appointment provides tuition, required fees, stipend (at the GEO negotiated GSSA monthly rate), GradCare health insurance, and dental insurance (Option 1).

Program Overview

The LSA Faculty & Staff Disability Navigator model is part of a 3-year pilot program established to identify and address workplace issues impacting employees with disabilities. As it nears the end of Year 3, the program has delivered: 

  • a streamlined employee disability accommodation process,
  • centralized funding for employee accommodations and accessibility services at College events,
  • education and consultation services to address key culture and accessibility issues, and
  • policy and practice changes to ensure equitable and timely support for disabled employees.

The Disability Navigators are now focused on 1) continued delivery and optimization of services, 2) development of new educational materials focused on event accessibility, and 3) reporting on program outcomes and making recommendations to sustain services and resources into the future. The DC GSSA hired for this position will directly support objectives 1 and 2, which are linked to goals in LSA?s broader DEI 2.0 Plan. 

The DC GSSA will work as a member of the LSA DEI Office team under the direct supervision of Jessica McCuaig, Senior LSA Faculty & Staff Disability Navigator. The Disability Navigators report to Karla Renee Williams, LSA?s Chief People Officer.

Professional Development Opportunities:

The selected GSSA will be able to select two professional development opportunities to engage in over the course of the term, based on personal learning objectives in the realm of disability inclusion, disability justice, and accessibility and in consultation with the designated supervisors. These opportunities may include conferences, webinars, or certificate programs. 

The GSSA will also have the opportunity to attend training modules and access resources offered through field-specific associations, such as the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) and the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), that will assist with the completion of assigned responsibilities. Further, the GSSA will be invited to participate in meetings with U-M and peer institution subject matter experts to bolster learning and generate networking opportunities.  

Responsibilities*

The Disability Culture Graduate Student Staff Assistant (DC GSSA) will:

  • Document best practices for event accessibility on topics including venue considerations, working with external service providers, facilitating accommodations, hosting hybrid events, etc.
  • Incorporate resources available to support LSA event planners.
  • Format digital education materials to be accessible to assistive technology, with training and guidance from the Disability Navigators.
  • Learn to structure and post educational content to the LSA website.
  • Present to diverse audiences on accessibility best practices and promote new educational materials.
  • Consult with partners in Facilities, Technology Services, and Ergonomics and analyze Navigator equipment purchase data to determine which items are purchased most frequently.
  • Help develop workflows for managing and deploying purchased inventory.
  • Design and co-present a workshop/webinar on a topic of accessibility/disability that is of interest to the selected grad student, and addresses a gap in current offerings.
  • Other projects will be identified based on the GSSA?s strengths, interests, and learning objectives, as well as the evolving needs of the Disability Navigator team.

The work described above for this position must be considered academically relevant by the department or degree program in which the student is enrolled.

  • Be a student in good standing in a University of Michigan graduate degree program.
  • Demonstrate commitment to disability culture and accessibility at U-M and beyond through their scholarship, teaching, or service activities.
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information.
  • Have experience developing new processes or initiatives. 
  • Possess data collection and analysis skills.
  • Be interested in diversity issues in higher education and have enthusiasm for educating others on disability and accessibility topics.
  • Be competent with modern computer productivity tools including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation programs.

  • The ability to work, problem solve, and make decisions with limited supervision.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively and professionally with the Navigators? partners and the University community.
  • Previous experience developing high-quality resource materials with clear attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Preference for LSA graduate student applicants, however all U-M students enrolled in a graduate degree program are welcome to apply.
