Thinking of doing your Ph.D.? If you have outstanding academic credentials, intellectual curiosity, discipline required for deep and meticulous research then the Ph.D. Programme at IIMA is where you should be. You will acquire a solid foundation within your discipline, exposure to new ideas, and mastery of the tools necessary to engage in research as you investigate in-depth today’s most challenging problems.
Vision of the Programme
The objective of the Ph.D. Programme in Management is to equip students with necessary skills to identify and carry out research on complex issues in a specialized field of management. The programme is strongly committed to preparing thought leaders, both for the academic and corporate world. Graduates of the Ph.D. Programme in Management are placed in world class organizations in teaching, research and consulting positions. A total of 422 doctoral students have graduated from IIMA so far.
The Ph.D. Programme in Management seeks candidates with outstanding academic credentials, intellectual curiosity and discipline needed to make scholarly contributions that advance the frontiers of knowledge. It provides a diverse set of opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and research. The student opts for one of eleven functional/sectoral areas and acquires super specialized theoretical knowledge and mastery of practical aspects of the area.
The small class size allows close interaction with faculty members, who provide the intellectual stimulus and help develop the student's research interests and professional goals. Students generally spend a little over four years to complete their Ph.D. which includes two years of rigorous course work.
Course work in the first year provides a general management overview and develops basic skills for analyzing managerial problems. In the second year, students take advanced Ph.D. level courses in their areas of high levels of specialization. After completing the course work, students have to pass an area comprehensive examination to demonstrate that they have reached a level of proficiency in the area of high levels of specialization. The Ph.D. dissertation, for the next couple of years, provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its source disciplines. Students admitted to the Ph.D. Programme receive a comprehensive fellowship that covers all costs and in addition provides a modest living allowance.

My experience with IIM A, till now, can be summarized in three words - rigour, learning, and development. The coursework is vast and intense. I would admit that the first year of coursework has helped me take a quantum leap into the world of academics. The faculty members are extremely supportive and patient. Additionally, there is ample scope, here, to pursue one’s extra-curricular interests. Ashoka PhD Programme carries a strong emphasis on foundational knowledge, academic research and hands-on experiences with real-world challenges. Ashoka envisions a future where researchers combine curiosity based intellectual pursuits with a strong commitment to solving complex problems with societal impact.
In a research institution, everyone is hired to do similar tasks that revolve around research. However, the university is an ecosystem that creates opportunities for students based on their interests. The mission of a liberal arts/sciences research university should be sensitive to this need. There exists a possibility to bring people with different interests and expertise onto the same platform to carry out focused research.
Key Aspects of Ashoka’s PhD Programme :
Interdisciplinary Research, Partnership with Industry and Policymakers, and Integrated Teaching with Research
Programme Offerings
Ashoka University’s Ph.D. program is designed to maintain global standards in education, training, productivity, and academic freedom. The Ph.D. program in Biological Sciences is characterized by state-of-the-art laboratories and computational infrastructure, generous support to carryout field work, accomplished faculty as research mentors, and generous scholarship remunerations to all students. The unique liberal arts environment of the campus allows Ph.D. students to work on inter-disciplinary research projects drawing on the expertise of faculty members within and beyond the biology department.

Ph.D. in India: Cost, Duration, and Eligibility for Admission
Complete guide to ph.d. in india: duration, costs, eligibility, and recent updates.
Table of contents
How many years is a ph.d. in india, how much does a ph.d. cost in india, what qualifications are required for a ph.d. in india, what is the age limit for a ph.d. in india is 25 too old to start a ph.d., can i do a ph.d. without the national eligibility test (net), who is eligible for direct ph.d. admission, is it okay to do a ph.d. without a master’s degree, what are the recent rules for ph.d. admissions in india, 25 tips to join phd in india, 10 steps to join ph.d. in india.
Embarking on a Ph.D. journey in India is a significant academic and professional pursuit. Aspiring research scholars often have questions regarding the duration of a Ph.D., the associated costs, eligibility criteria, and recent developments in the field. In this comprehensive guide, ilovephd aims to address these queries and shed light on the essentials of pursuing a Ph.D. in India.
A Ph.D. program in India typically takes around 3 to 5 years to complete, depending on various factors such as the discipline, research area, individual progress, and university regulations.
The duration may vary, but it is important to be prepared for a substantial commitment of time and effort.
The cost of pursuing a Ph.D. in India varies across institutions. Generally, public universities offer Ph.D. programs with minimal or subsidized tuition fees. Private universities may have higher fees.
It’s advisable to explore funding options such as scholarships, fellowships, or research grants provided by government bodies, funding agencies , or individual institutions to support your Ph.D. journey.
To pursue a Ph.D. in India, a candidate typically needs a postgraduate degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field. It is important to note that specific eligibility criteria may vary between universities and disciplines.
Additionally, universities often require candidates to clear entrance exams or interviews and meet minimum academic standards to be considered for admission.
In most cases, there is no strict age limit for pursuing a Ph.D. in India. As long as you meet the eligibility criteria and demonstrate the necessary academic qualifications, you can pursue a Ph.D. at any age.
Therefore, 25 is certainly not too old to start a Ph.D. Many scholars begin their doctoral studies later in life, bringing valuable experiences and perspectives to their research.
While the National Eligibility Test (NET) is a common requirement for lectureships and research fellowships in India , it is not mandatory for all Ph.D. programs. Some universities may have their own entrance exams or selection processes.
It is important to check the specific requirements of the university or institution where you plan to pursue your Ph.D.
Direct Ph.D. admission is a pathway for exceptional candidates who have completed their undergraduate studies and wish to pursue a Ph.D. without a Master’s degree.
However, this option is typically available to a limited number of candidates, and universities may have specific criteria and guidelines for direct Ph.D. admissions. It is advisable to consult with individual institutions to understand their policies regarding direct Ph.D. admissions.
While a Master’s degree is generally the standard qualification for pursuing a Ph.D., some universities in India offer integrated Ph.D. programs that allow students to directly enter the Ph.D. track after completing their undergraduate studies.
However, this option may be limited to certain disciplines or institutions. It’s important to research and identify institutions that offer such programs if you wish to pursue a Ph.D. without a Master’s degree.
The rules and regulations for Ph.D. admissions in India are subject to change and can vary between universities and disciplines.
It is advisable to stay updated with the guidelines provided by individual universities and regulatory bodies such as the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to ensure compliance with the latest requirements.

At US universities, record numbers of Indian students seek brighter prospects — and overseas jobs
Pranay Karkale, a first-year graduate student at Johns Hopkins University from Nashik, India, stands at the university’s campus in Baltimore on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. Karkale is working toward his Master of Science in engineering management. (AP Photo/Steve Ruark)

Pranay Karkale is spending years of savings and $60,000 in student loans to pursue a master’s degree in the United States, yet he considers himself lucky. At home in India, it’s common to hear about families selling off their land to send children to universities overseas.
Karkale was willing to do whatever it took once he got into Johns Hopkins University. A degree from a prestigious U.S. college, he believed, would open doors to a better job and higher pay than he would find in India.
“I don’t feel like I would have gotten the same level of education that I get here,” said Karkale, 23.
Historic numbers of students from India are studying at foreign universities as a fast-growing, aspirational generation of young people looks for opportunities they can’t find at home. India estimates 1.5 million students are studying at universities elsewhere — an eightfold increase since 2012 — with no country attracting more than the U.S.
It represents a loss for India, with many students seeing universities as stepping stones for careers overseas, but a boon for American schools . As record-setting enrollment by students from China has ebbed, U.S. universities have turned to India as a new source of full-price tuition payments.
India’s economy is growing, but joblessness remains persistent even for college graduates. Jobs are being created in fields such as construction and agriculture, but they don’t meet the demands of a newly educated workforce, said Rosa Abraham, an economist at the Azim Premji University.
“I think many young people today feel like the economy isn’t meeting their potential, their aspirations, and so they want to try their chances abroad if they can,” she said.
India’s own higher education system is also short on capacity. As its population surges, competition for admission to India’s top universities has become frenzied. Acceptance rates at some elite Indian universities have fallen as low as 0.2%, compared to 3% at Harvard University and 4% at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Lokesh Sangabattula, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in materials science at MIT, is among many hoping to land jobs inside the U.S. There’s little demand for materials scientists in India, he said, and at best he figures he could become a professor. It’s a similar story for engineers, which India generates in huge numbers without the industry to employ them.
“We produce engineers whose degrees don’t have value, so people leave the country,” he said.
Universities in Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom also are seeing surging interest, but none more than the U.S., where universities enroll nearly 269,000 students from India. With that number soaring, including a 35% increase in the 2022-23 academic year, India is on the verge of replacing China as the largest international presence on U.S. college campuses.
The vast majority are coming for graduate programs, often in science, math and engineering — fields that have faced persistent labor shortages in the U.S. — though undergraduate numbers also are rising as India’s middle class expands. One selling point is the chance to work in America for up to three years after graduating, a benefit provided by the U.S. government and known as optional practical training.
For Karkale, staying in India never felt like an option. As an undergraduate in India, he became interested in engineering management, which merges engineering and leadership skills. It’s a growing industry in the U.S. and Europe, but Karkale, who is from the western Indian state of Maharashtra, couldn’t find any master’s programs in India.
At Hopkins, he’s gaining professional work experience arranged by the school, a rarity at Indian universities, he said. Ultimately he wants to return to India, but the most appealing jobs are elsewhere. After graduating, he plans to work in the U.S. for at least a year or two.
If he could find the right job in India, he added, “I would hop right back.”
The surge has helped the bottom line of American colleges, which charge international students higher tuition rates. It comes as many Americans sour on higher education, citing concerns about student debt and the perception of liberal bias at universities. The number of students coming from China has been declining as a result of chilly political ties and a stagnant Chinese economy.
In India, American universities have become a common presence at college fairs. Many are spending big to gain name recognition in India, and they are fanning farther across the country to recruit in smaller cities and towns, where demand to study abroad has been rising.
Still, for the vast majority of India’s young people, an overseas education remains out of reach. The cost of a U.S. education is a fortune for most, and Indian banks have scaled back on student loans in response to high default rates.
Even for those who can afford it, the student visa process presents roadblocks. At the U.S. embassy in New Delhi, student applicants are routinely turned away.
On a recent Friday, Daisy Cheema slumped her shoulders and sighed as she left the embassy. She spent weeks preparing for a visa interview after getting accepted to Westcliff University, a for-profit college in California. She hired an agency to help, but her visa was rejected with no reason provided; she just received a slip of paper saying she could reapply.
Cheema, 22, hoped to gain work experience in the U.S. before returning to India to support her family. Her parents, who own a gas station in the northern Indian state of Punjab, were going to pay with their savings.
“I feel terrible right now,” said Cheema, holding back tears. “But I will prepare more and try again. I’m not giving up.”
America’s shift toward Indian students is visible on campuses like the University of Texas, Dallas, where enrollment from China fell from about 1,200 to 400 over the past four years. Meantime, enrollment from India grew from about 3,000 to 4,400.
Rajarshi Boggarapu came to the U.S. to get a master’s degree in business analytics and chose UT-Dallas in part because of its large Indian population. He borrowed $40,000 for tuition, which he sees as an investment in his future.
“We value education more than anything else back in India,” he said.
Like many U.S. universities, Johns Hopkins is deepening ties with India. It has hosted Indian diplomats to discuss health and engineering partnerships and is part of a new task force formed by the Association of American Universities to promote exchange with India.
Before he came to the U.S., Karkale had concerns about the political climate, but the campus made him feel welcome. When he couldn’t return home for Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, he was surprised to find a campus celebration that drew hundreds of students and staff.
In a campus gym adorned with colorful flowers and lamps, Karkale watched as student groups performed dances to a mix of new and old Indian music. There was a Hindu prayer ceremony. And when the dance floor opened up, Karkale joined in.
“It was a memorable evening,” he said. “It made me feel right at home.”

- Graduate Route key for UK-India relations
As the UK and India attempt to formulate a free trade agreement, and with the future of the UK Graduate Route uncertain, stakeholders have highlighted the importance of post-study work offerings for bilateral relations between the countries.
The Migration Advisory Committee has until May 14 to present its findings of its review of the Graduate Review
“I think it speaks as much to sentiment as it does to practicalities,” said Simona Campbell, vice president of university relations at Leap .
Speaking on what makes a good negotiation for both parties, Campbell said “nobody wants to feel like a loser coming out of it”.
“If you take the Graduate Route away, India, and Indians, immediately feel like they’ve lost something and are going into these conversations feeling like already on the losing side that now needs to be recovered.
“It creates a negative tone to any sort of conversations,” added Campbell.
Krishna Omkar, 2023 winner of NISAU’s UK-India Achievers Award and corporate lawyer by background, said that he hopes the Graduate Route is given the importance it deserves in relation to the UK-India trade deal.
The comments were made during The PIE Live Europe conference in London, where a panel, hosted by NISAU founder and chairperson Sanam Arora, unpacked what the impact would be if the Graduate Route was taken away for Indian students, and the knock-on effects for India-UK relations.
The Migration Advisory Committee has until May 14 to present its findings of its review of the Graduate Review, as commissioned by the UK government.
Speaking at the event earlier in the day, former universities minister Jo Johnson said the complete suspension of the route would be a “ nuclear option “.
Virendra Sharma, Labour MP for Ealing Southall, shared his thoughts during the panel, and delegates convened at the conference were keen to hear from him Labour’s stance on the policy, in an important election year.
“If you take the Graduate Route away, India, and Indians, immediately feel like they’ve lost something”
Although Sharma said the Labour party is “committed” to offering an attractive post-study work offering for international students, but he did not give specifics on the party’s manifesto.
“If in case there is no such commitment coming out, there are allies like myself and many others who will be fighting for the rights. We see the benefit of it,” he said.
Sharma went on to say that the Labour Party has learned lessons from the last time the post-study work visa was taken away in 2011. He does not want to repeat history that had a negative impact on the country’s reputation as a study destination, he added.
India-UK relations, as well as the Labour government, have moved away from a “master-servant” perception of the relations between the two countries, said Sharma, and assured delegates that if Labour are to be successful in the pending election, the party would work to continue this “equal-footing”, making sure that contributions are recognised and supported by each other.
Sharma highlighted the power of diaspora groups such as NISAU in impacting policies such as the Graduate Route, and said that it is a “collective role” that must be played by politicians, educators and lobbyists alike.
A strong supporter of the Graduate Route, Arora did not shy away from mentioning a certain “complacency around recruitment efforts” in the UK. She noted the government’s concerns that education is being mis-sold as education, along with a lack of penalisation for agents who misrepresent UK universities and their offers.
As India competes with China as top sending country to the UK, Sharma took the time to point out that most Indian students, after studying in the UK and gaining a few years work experience, tend to go back home to India – something that was not the case 30 or so years ago.
Now, India can offer returners advanced opportunities in their home country, he said, becoming ambassadors to UK universities when they go back home.
