Answer & explanation.

Module 5: Movie Theater

Imagine that you work at a movie theater.

1. What normal and typical things occur at the theater?

Stepping into the movie theater where I work, I'm immediately immersed in the bustling energy of eager moviegoers and the familiar rhythm of typical activities that unfold within its walls. The lobby serves as the heart of the operation, buzzing with patrons lining up at the ticket counter or seamlessly navigating their way through the self-service kiosks to secure their tickets for the latest cinematic releases. Groups of families and friends gather in clusters, their conversations filled with excitement and anticipation as they eagerly deliberate over which movie to watch or discuss their plans for snacks and refreshments. The unmistakable aroma of freshly popped popcorn permeates the air, mingling harmoniously with the scent of melted butter drifting from the nearby concession stand, enticing patrons to indulge in this quintessential movie treat. Behind the counter, a team of dedicated employees in their vibrant uniforms work diligently to fulfill orders, ensuring that each guest is served with efficiency and a warm smile. As I navigate through the lobby, I can't help but notice the digital display boards overhead, flashing movie titles and showtimes, guiding patrons to their respective theaters and adding to the overall excitement and anticipation that fills the space. Overall, the theater is a hive of activity, where a seamless blend of familiar routines and captivating experiences come together to create unforgettable moviegoing moments for guests of all ages.

Beyond the lobby, the theater offers a range of amenities and experiences designed to enhance the overall movie-watching experience. The spacious and comfortable seating in the theaters themselves provides a welcoming environment for guests to settle in and immerse themselves in the cinematic journey about to unfold on the screen. From plush recliners to traditional stadium-style seating, there's an option to suit every preference, ensuring that guests can enjoy their movie in comfort and style. As the lights dim and the previews begin, the atmosphere in the theater shifts, with patrons settling into their seats and eagerly awaiting the main event. Throughout the movie, the sound of laughter, gasps, and applause fills the air, as audiences react to the twists and turns of the plot unfolding before them. After the credits roll and the lights come back on, guests slowly make their way back to the lobby, where they can linger and discuss their thoughts on the movie or browse the selection of movie-themed merchandise available for purchase. Whether it's the excitement of the lobby, the immersive experience of the theaters, or the camaraderie shared among fellow moviegoers, the theater offers a host of normal and typical activities that come together to create a memorable and enjoyable outing for all who visit.

2. What do you see on the restaurant's right, left, and center?

Upon entering the restaurant adjacent to the movie theater, my attention is immediately captured by the meticulously planned layout designed to cater to a diverse range of dining preferences. To my right, a series of inviting booths offers patrons a secluded and intimate setting to enjoy their meals, whether before or after indulging in a film screening. These booths exude an aura of modern sophistication, adorned with sleek décor that enhances the overall ambiance of the space. Bathed in the soft glow of ambient lighting, they create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, inviting guests to unwind and savor their dining experience in comfort. On the opposite side, to my left, a bustling bar area catches my eye, boasting high stools where patrons can socialize over expertly crafted cocktails or simply enjoy a refreshing beverage before immersing themselves in the cinematic adventure awaiting them. The bar area pulsates with lively energy, as guests engage in animated conversations and bartenders skillfully mix drinks, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the establishment. In the heart of the restaurant, at its center, is a spacious dining area, thoughtfully designed to accommodate both intimate gatherings and larger parties. At its focal point sits a grand table adorned with elegant décor, reserved for special occasions or group celebrations, further elevating the dining experience. The walls are adorned with captivating movie posters and artwork, serving as a visual homage to the cinematic theme of the restaurant and enhancing the overall ambiance. In essence, the restaurant offers a multifaceted dining experience, providing patrons with a variety of options to suit their tastes and preferences, whether they seek a quiet meal, a lively drink, or a joyous gathering with loved ones.

3. How do the surroundings remind you of other places you have been?

Working at the movie theater, I find the surroundings strikingly reminiscent of various other places I've frequented in the past, evoking a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. The bustling lobby, filled with excited chatter and the aroma of freshly popped popcorn, transports me back to the vibrant atmosphere of bustling amusement parks where families gather to indulge in shared experiences and create cherished memories. The colorful décor and dynamic energy of the theater lobby resemble the lively ambiance found in these theme parks, where every corner is adorned with vibrant displays and the air is filled with laughter and anticipation. Additionally, the sense of camaraderie and community shared among patrons and staff alike echoes the warm hospitality found in other social settings, such as bustling cafes or lively concert venues. The shared excitement and collective enthusiasm for the movie experience evoke fond memories of past outings to similar entertainment destinations, reinforcing the timeless appeal of the movie theater as a hub of joy and camaraderie.

Furthermore, the thematic elements scattered throughout the theater, from the movie posters adorning the walls to the cinematic displays featured in the lobby, transport me to the immersive environments of other entertainment venues, such as interactive museums or themed attractions. The attention to detail and thematic coherence of the surroundings evoke the same sense of wonder and fascination experienced in these immersive settings, where every aspect of the environment is carefully curated to create a captivating experience for visitors. Additionally, the diverse range of food and beverage options available at the concession stand adds to the immersive experience, offering a taste of culinary delights inspired by various cultures and cuisines. As I navigate through the bustling theater, the sights, sounds, and aromas remind me of the diverse array of experiences I've encountered in other places, reaffirming the movie theater as a cherished destination where people come together to escape reality and immerse themselves in the magic of storytelling and shared experiences.

4. What aromas are in the air?

As I step into the movie theater, a delightful array of aromas envelops me, creating a sensory experience that adds to the excitement of the cinematic adventure ahead. The predominant scent that fills the space is the irresistible aroma of freshly popped popcorn, its buttery goodness permeating every corner of the lobby. This classic movie snack is a staple of the theater experience, and its savory scent acts as an irresistible invitation for patrons to indulge in this timeless treat.  Accompanying the popcorn, the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee intermingles with the enticing scent of freshly baked cookies, drawing guests towards the café area where they can enjoy a comforting beverage and satisfy their sweet cravings before the movie commences. Furthermore, the savory aroma of hot dogs and nachos lingers in the air, tempting moviegoers with savory treats to complement their cinematic experience. This diverse range of aromas creates a sensory journey that complements the visual and auditory aspects of the movie-watching experience, enriching the overall enjoyment for guests of all ages.

As I continue through the theater, the aroma of buttery popcorn grows more pronounced, evoking nostalgic memories of past movie outings and heightening the excitement of the present moment. In addition to the popcorn, the scent of freshly grilled hamburgers and hot dogs emanates from the concession stand, enticing patrons with the promise of a satisfying meal. The aroma of melted cheese and tangy ketchup adds to the allure, creating an irresistible temptation. Moreover, the sweet fragrance of cotton candy drifts from the nearby snack stand, offering a nostalgic treat for those with a craving for something sugary. Each aroma contributes to the sensory experience of the movie theater, immersing guests in a world of culinary delights and enhancing their overall enjoyment of the film.

What you need to know before working at a movie theater, big or small, all theater employees have the same obstacles..

What You Need To Know Before Working At A Movie Theater

Working at a movie theater was my first job, and I highly recommend anyone who hasn’t had a job before to try their local movie theater first. Typically, theater work as floor staff (anything above is more difficult for obvious reasons) is very easy. Skills you need can be easily taught and are fairly basic, like cash-handling and cleaning. It’s a great job to have for high school and college students, but like anything else, there are downsides you should be aware of.

You won’t like watching movies anymore.

Depending on your company, you’re likely to have benefits of watching movies for free or a discounted price and probably get some concession items for free , but that doesn’t mean you’ll take advantage of it as often as you think. I found that after working for so long, I didn’t have the motivation to go to my work place on my day off. Who really wants to go to work when you don’t have to? Working five days a week is enough time to spend at the theater. And for college/high school students, working three days a week in addition to school days is exhausting enough.

You need to do movie homework.

You should have basic knowledge of every movie your theater is playing. Do a quick read over IMDB for a synopsis, especially for wide-release movies. Customers will approach you when you’re not around any physical or electronic copy of synopsis, so it’s always a good idea to know your movies. Cust omers expect you to know everything about every movie you have playing or upcoming movies. And if you’re wearing your work shirt out in public, you will still be asked movie-related questions. Even at Walmart. So beware of running errands before or after work; you might want to bring an extra shirt to avoid working outside of work.

Memorize your theater’s policies.

Everyone knows the basic rules, like those for R-rated movies: “under 17 not admitted without parent.” However, this rule as well as others vary from theater to theater. For example, my theater has a "no ID, no entry" rule. If you’re clearly young or the cashier thinks you are underage, you must provide a valid ID or you won’t be sold a ticket. But, an adult (21 or older) or your parent can buy your ticket, but they must also watch the movie with you. I know that at other theaters, this rule is slightly different. My theater also does not allow outside food or drinks and open carry is not allowed either. Bringing in food is against health code and we can get into serious trouble for it, and we would lose money by letting people bring their own food. Concealed carry is allowed, but we'd prefer if guns were not brought into the theater at all, for obvious reasons. Theaters are considered family places, and parents aren't typically comfortable with their children being around guns, and there's also the fear of theater shootings. But again, these rules vary from theater to theater.

Theaters are open year-round.

My theater is flexible around holidays, but I'm assuming not all theaters are. You will work holidays, even if it's a short shift. Holidays are typically our busiest days, because many other stores and companies are closed, so naturally the people flock to the theater. If you are in a family that is always out of town during holidays, you will have less of a chance to get hired than someone who is always available. Same thing goes for summer; if your family takes long vacations, your chance at being hired will be hurt. Even during bad weather, theaters are typically still open. Tornado warning? Open. Hail storm? Open. Flooding? Open. Sl eeting? Open. The theater I work at has been open for business for more than two years, and we've been open every single day except for one, when the roads were iced over to the point that no one could leave their homes.

Theaters have long business hours.

Weekends, holidays and summer times are theaters' longest days for obvious reasons, and we can be open as early as 8 a.m. and close as late as 2 a.m. If you're not up for working late shifts or working early shifts, theater work might not be the job for you. Of course, during the school days we open later and close earlier. Scheduling usually isn't the set for each employee, meaning you won't get similar shifts week by week, so your sleep schedule will be skewed from working at a theater. I've had quite a few shifts where I closed one night and then opened the next day, and as you can imagine, I wasn't feeling too hot. Actually, I felt wired from the lack of sleep, but I usually crash as soon as I get home. Honestly, the best "sleep" patterns to have for working at a theater are those of an insomniac; I know from experienc e. Either that or night owls. Both options typically have the easiest times adjusting to the odd work hours.

Waitlisted for a college class here's what to do, dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Navigating the Talking Stage: 21 Essential Questions to Ask for Connection

It's mandatory to have these conversations..

Whether you met your new love interest online , through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

1. What do you do for a living?

What someone does for a living can tell a lot about who they are and what they're interested in! Their career reveals a lot more about them than just where they spend their time to make some money.

2. What's your favorite color?

OK, I get it, this seems like something you would ask a Kindergarten class, but I feel like it's always good to know someone's favorite color . You could always send them that Snapchat featuring you in that cute shirt you have that just so happens to be in their favorite color!

3. Do you have any siblings?

This one is actually super important because it's totally true that people grow up with different roles and responsibilities based on where they fall in the order. You can tell a lot about someone just based on this seemingly simple question.

4. What's your favorite television show?

OK, maybe this isn't a super important question, but you have to know ASAP if you can quote Michael Scott or not. If not, he probably isn't the one. Sorry, girl.

5. When is your birthday?

You can then proceed to do the thing that every girl does without admitting it and see how compatible your zodiacs are.

6. What's your biggest goal in life?

If you're like me, you have big goals that you want to reach someday, and you want a man behind you who also has big goals and understands what it's like to chase after a dream. If his biggest goal is to see how quickly he can binge-watch " Grey's Anatomy " on Netflix , you may want to move on.

7. If you had three wishes granted to you by a genie, what would they be?

This is a go-to for an insight into their personality. Based on how they answer, you can tell if they're goofy, serious, or somewhere in between.

8. What's your favorite childhood memory?

For some, this may be a hard question if it involves a family member or friend who has since passed away . For others, it may revolve around a tradition that no longer happens. The answers to this question are almost endless!

9. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

We all have parts of our lives and stories that we wish we could change. It's human nature to make mistakes. This question is a little bit more personal but can really build up the trust level.

10. Are you a cat or a dog person?

I mean, duh! If you're a dog person, and he is a cat person, it's not going to work out.

11. Do you believe in a religion or any sort of spiritual power?

Personally, I am a Christian, and as a result, I want to be with someone who shares those same values. I know some people will argue that this question is too much in the talking stage , but why go beyond the talking stage if your personal values will never line up?

12. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Even homebodies have a must visit place on their bucket list !

13. What is your ideal date night?

Hey, if you're going to go for it... go for it!

14. Who was/is your celebrity crush?

For me, it was hands-down Nick Jonas . This is always a fun question to ask!

15. What's a good way to cheer you up if you're having a bad day?

Let's be real, if you put a label on it, you're not going to see your significant other at their best 24/7.

16. Do you have any tattoos?

This can lead to some really good conversations, especially if they have a tattoo that has a lot of meaning to them!

17. Can you describe yourself in three words?

It's always interesting to see if how the person you're talking to views their personal traits lines ups with the vibes you're getting.

18. What makes you the most nervous in life?

This question can go multiple different directions, and it could also be a launching pad for other conversations.

19. What's the best gift you have ever received?

Admittedly, I have asked this question to friends as well, but it's neat to see what people value.

20. What do you do to relax/have fun?

Work hard, play hard, right?

21. What are your priorities at this phase of your life?

This is always interesting because no matter how compatible your personalities may be, if one of you wants to be serious and the other is looking for something casual, it's just not going to work.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in challah bread or easter bread.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

A few weeks ago, I was given a loaf of bread called Challah (pronounced like holla), and upon my first bite, I realized it tasted just like Easter Bread. It was so delicious that I just had to make some of my own, which I did.

The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 1 cup lukewarm water 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 2 tsp salt 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk (reserve the white for the egg wash) 1/4 cup neutral-flavored vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Combine yeast and a pinch of sugar in small bowl with the water and stir until you see a frothy layer across the top.
  • Whisk together 4 cups of the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour and add in eggs, egg yolk, and oil. Whisk these together to form a slurry, pulling in a little flour from the sides of the bowl.
  • Pour the yeast mixture over the egg slurry and mix until difficult to move.
  • Turn out the dough onto a floured work surface and knead by hand for about 10 minutes. If the dough seems very sticky, add flour a teaspoon at a time until it feels tacky, but no longer like bubblegum. The dough has finished kneading when it is soft, smooth, and holds a ball-shape.
  • Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and place somewhere warm. Let the dough rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Separate the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope roughly 1-inch thick and 16 inches long.
  • Gather the ropes and squeeze them together at the very top. Braid the pieces in the pattern of over, under, and over again. Pinch the pieces together again at the bottom.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment and lift the loaf on top. Sprinkle the loaf with a little flour and drape it with a clean dishcloth. Place the pan somewhere warm and away from drafts and let it rise until puffed and pillowy, about an hour.
  • Heat the oven to 350°F. Whisk the reserved egg white with a tablespoon of water and brush it all over the challah. Be sure to get in the cracks and down the sides of the loaf.
  • Slide the challah on its baking sheet into the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through cooking. The challah is done when it is deeply browned.

I kept wondering how these two breads could be so similar in taste. So I decided to look up a recipe for Easter Bread to make a comparison. The two are almost exactly the same! These recipes are similar because they come from religious backgrounds. The Jewish Challah bread is based on kosher dietary laws. The Christian Easter Bread comes from the Jewish tradition but was modified over time because they did not follow kosher dietary laws.

A recipe for Easter bread is as follows:

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 2/3 cup milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup white granulated sugar 2 tbs butter 2 large eggs 2 tbs melted butter 1 tsp salt

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast; stir well. Combine milk and butter in a small saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
  • Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat well. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  • Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal size rounds; cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each round into a long roll about 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Using the two long pieces of dough, form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the five colored eggs. Seal the ends of the ring together and use your fingers to slide the eggs between the braids of dough.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place loaf on a buttered baking sheet and cover loosely with a damp towel. Place loaf in a warm place and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Brush risen loaf with melted butter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Both of these recipes are really easy to make. While you might need to have a day set aside for this activity, you can do things while the dough is rising or in the oven. After only a few hours, you have a delicious loaf of bread that you made from scratch, so the time and effort is really worth it!

Unlocking Lake People's Secrets: 15 Must-Knows!

There's no other place you'd rather be in the summer..

The people that spend their summers at the lake are a unique group of people.

Whether you grew up going to the lake , have only recently started going, or have only been once or twice, you know it takes a certain kind of person to be a lake person. To the long-time lake people, the lake holds a special place in your heart , no matter how dirty the water may look.

Every year when summer rolls back around, you can't wait to fire up the boat and get back out there. Here is a list of things you can probably identify with as a fellow lake-goer.

A bad day at the lake is still better than a good day not at the lake.

It's your place of escape, where you can leave everything else behind and just enjoy the beautiful summer day. No matter what kind of week you had, being able to come and relax without having to worry about anything else is the best therapy there is. After all, there's nothing better than a day of hanging out in the hot sun, telling old funny stories and listening to your favorite music.

You know the best beaches and coves to go to.

Whether you want to just hang out and float or go walk around on a beach, you know the best spots. These often have to be based on the people you're with, given that some "party coves" can get a little too crazy for little kids on board. I still have vivid memories from when I was six that scared me when I saw the things drunk girls would do for beads.

You have no patience for the guy who can't back his trailer into the water right.

When there's a long line of trucks waiting to dump their boats in the water, there's always that one clueless guy who can't get it right, and takes 5 attempts and holds up the line. No one likes that guy. One time my dad got so fed up with a guy who was taking too long that he actually got out of the car and asked this guy if he could just do it for him. So he got into the guy's car, threw it in reverse, and got it backed in on the first try. True story.

Doing the friendly wave to every boat you pass.

Similar to the "jeep wave," almost everyone waves to other boats passing by. It's just what you do, and is seen as a normal thing by everyone.

The cooler is always packed, mostly with beer.

Alcohol seems to be a big part of the lake experience, but other drinks are squeezed into the room remaining in the cooler for the kids, not to mention the wide assortment of chips and other foods in the snack bag.

Giving the idiot who goes 30 in a "No Wake Zone" a piece of your mind.

There's nothing worse than floating in the water, all settled in and minding your business, when some idiot barrels through. Now your anchor is loose, and you're left jostled by the waves when it was nice and perfectly still before. This annoyance is typically answered by someone yelling some choice words to them that are probably accompanied by a middle finger in the air.

You have no problem with peeing in the water.

It's the lake, and some social expectations are a little different here, if not lowered quite a bit. When you have to go, you just go, and it's no big deal to anyone because they do it too.

You know the frustration of getting your anchor stuck.

The number of anchors you go through as a boat owner is likely a number that can be counted on two hands. Every once in a while, it gets stuck on something on the bottom of the lake, and the only way to fix the problem is to cut the rope, and you have to replace it.

Watching in awe at the bigger, better boats that pass by.

If you're the typical lake-goer, you likely might have an average-sized boat that you're perfectly happy with. However, that doesn't mean you don't stop and stare at the fast boats that loudly speed by, or at the obnoxiously huge yachts that pass.

Knowing any swimsuit that you own with white in it is best left for the pool or the ocean.

You've learned this the hard way, coming back from a day in the water and seeing the flowers on your bathing suit that were once white, are now a nice brownish hue.

The momentary fear for your life as you get launched from the tube.

If the driver knows how to give you a good ride, or just wants to specifically throw you off, you know you're done when you're speeding up and heading straight for a big wave. Suddenly you're airborne, knowing you're about to completely wipe out, and you eat pure wake. Then you get back on and do it all again.

You're able to go to the restaurants by the water wearing minimal clothing.

One of the many nice things about the life at the lake is that everybody cares about everything a little less. Rolling up to the place wearing only your swimsuit, a cover-up, and flip flops, you fit right in. After a long day when you're sunburned, a little buzzed, and hungry, you're served without any hesitation.

Having unexpected problems with your boat.

Every once in a while you're hit with technical difficulties, no matter what type of watercraft you have. This is one of the most annoying setbacks when you're looking forward to just having a carefree day on the water, but it's bound to happen. This is just one of the joys that come along with being a boat owner.

Having a name for your boat unique to you and your life.

One of the many interesting things that make up the lake culture is the fact that many people name their boats. They can range from basic to funny, but they are unique to each and every owner, and often have interesting and clever meanings behind them.

There's no better place you'd rather be in the summer.

Summer is your all-time favorite season, mostly because it's spent at the lake. Whether you're floating in the cool water under the sun, or taking a boat ride as the sun sets, you don't have a care in the world at that moment . The people that don't understand have probably never experienced it, but it's what keeps you coming back every year.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why i chose a small school over a big university..

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin ." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.

1. My school is incredibly unique.

There are so many different kinds of people that each bring something really special to contribute to the school which makes it so unique.

2. I am not just a number at my school.

I am a student that my professors know about and I like knowing that my professors can watch my progress.

3. I feel like I am contributing something to the community.

I like feeling like I can make a difference on my campus.

4. I really do feel like it is my home away from home.

It isn't just my school. It is absolutely my home away from home. I feel so comfortable there and it was as hard of an adjustment as I had thought it would be.

5. My professors know me and I feel that I can easily communicate with them.

I feel like they will do anything to help students succeed. I can always go to my professors. I like knowing that I have someone looking out for me.

6. The incredible people I've met

The people I have met at my school, even after my first year, have made such a huge impact on me. I know that these are people that I will stay friends with long after college is done.

7. Opportunities

My school offers so many different opportunities to get involved in things around campus. Even writing for the Odyssey was an opportunity offered to me by my school and I decided to challenge myself by writing an article. Turns out, I really enjoy writing. I might not have had this opportunity at a bigger school.

8. Students want to learn

I feel as though I am not just learning inside the classroom at my school. I am learning outside the classroom to from my fellow classmates who want to engage about the things we have learned.

9. Ability to join a sorority and have a house full of people I know I can talk to anytime I need to

I wasn't sure if being in a sorority was something I was interested in but when I met the amazing people in the sorority and how inclusive it was, I knew that it was going to be a good thing for me. The people I've met in my sorority have been so amazing.

10. I have figured out how I learn best because my school offers so many different ways of learning.

Because of the smaller class sizes, there is more flexibility in the way the class is taught. This was helpful because I was able to try out different ways of learning and figure out which way I learn best.

5 Benefits Of Working At a Movie Theater

fantasystock.deviantart.com

1.Flexible Hours.  As full-time students, most of us need a job that can accommodate our busy school schedules. Most movie theaters only require their employees to be available during the weekend, leaving the rest of the week free for school and homework.

 2.  Easy Promotions. If you have a bit more time on your hands, movie theaters are well known for the ease of climbing up the ladder. Many have been known to receive a promotion just months after being hired, and some are informed right after securing a job that they would be great candidates for promotion.

  3.  Free Movie Tickets and Popcorn. If ever you find yourself bored at home with nothing to do, movie theater employees can enjoy the luxury of watching movies for free. How many friends you can bring for free varies from theater to theater, but knocking the price of one ticket down can help save money, especially when on a date. Most theaters also offer free popcorn and drinks, especially while at work. This means that you never have to spend your own money for food during your lunch break.

4.Free Movie Goodies . Speaking of freebies, many movie distributors, especially for big-time movies, offer free posters, bracelets, pins, cups, or other fun movie promotions. Guests at movie theaters receive these goodies by purchasing a ticket to a certain movie, but employees often are able to acquire them for free.

5.Change in Scenery. If you are one of the many people who detest day-to-day jobs with nothing changing, then the movie theater is perfect for you. There are many different positions including ripping tickets, selling tickets, serving food, cleaning theaters, and many more. At movie theaters, you are moved around – you never stay in one spot. One day you may be selling tickets and the next, you may be serving food. This keeps work interesting and makes going to work just a bit more fun.

If you prefer a job that is fun and flexible and offers freebies, then the movie theater is definitely the right job for you!

home movie theater

Before having kids, a night at the movies was a go-to date for my husband and me. Now that we have two little ones, it’s pretty tricky to make it out to the theater, but our love for watching a flick with a giant bowl of popcorn is just as strong as ever. That’s why we’ve come up with 11 ways to fake a movie theater in our living room to recreate a movie night that’s twice the fun and a fraction of the price of the real deal.

Rearrange the Furniture

If your living room isn’t already set up with movie theater-style seating, move the couches and chairs to face the screen for the best possible viewing experience. One of the advantages of watching a movie at home is having the option to get as cozy as you want to, so come wearing your comfiest clothes, and bring a blanket and pillow to create a movie theater seat that can’t be beat!

Hang Up a Poster of the Feature Film

Whether your family has chosen your movie together or it’s been kept a surprise up until movie night, hanging up a poster of the film will get everyone in the family excited for what they’re about to see.

Take Tickets

Make tickets by hand, find a roll at your local party supply store, or print your own from the Internet. Having a ticket to rip makes the experience feel even more real (and the best part is, you don’t have to actually pay for it).

Make Sure the Screen Is Larger Than Life

A projector screen is a sure-fire way to take your living room movie theater up a notch or two. If you don’t have a screen already, try stringing up a white bedsheet or rolling out some art paper and taping it to the wall. Check your local listings for projector rentals or consider purchasing one — chances are, once you’ve enjoyed a night at your home movie theater, your kids will be begging for another one soon!

Queue Up Some Trailers of Your Family’s Must-Sees

Had a hard time choosing which movie would be your family’s feature film? Find trailers for the runners-up on YouTube and put them in a queue to watch before the full-length movie begins. You could also pick some of your family’s past favourites or find out what trailers are actually playing in theatres — the options are endless! Just like in the real theater, this is the best time to get your popcorn before the lights start to dim.

Pop a Giant, Buttery Bowl of Orville Redenbacher’s Popcorn

No movie theater experience would be complete without the smell of salty, buttery popcorn wafting through the air. Before the trailers start to roll, recreate the sounds and smells of the theater by preparing some of Orville Redenbacher’s high-quality, perfect pop microwave popcorn. Regardless of which variety you choose (Extra Buttery is our family’s favorite!) you can enjoy every handful knowing that each bag is made with 100 percent whole-grain popcorn that contains no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Orville Redenbacher’s  popcorn is also a high fiber, gluten free treat, so everyone in the family can feel good about going back for seconds.

Serve Your Popcorn in Custom Bags

To make the theater experience feel more like the real thing, give each person their own paper bag to munch out of. If you really want to get creative, have everyone in the family decorate their bag to look like the ones at the theater ahead of time.

Have a Selection of Candy to Complement Your Popcorn

If you’re looking to take your treat experience to the next level , pour some candy-coated chocolates, chocolate covered raisins, and gummy bears into your freshly-popped bag of popcorn for the perfect mix of melty, salty and sweet deliciousness. Create a mini candy bar on the counter and let everyone in your family choose a few of their favourites to take into the “theater”.  If you’re feeling ambitious, you could even create price tags for all of your treats and ask your patrons to pay for them using real or play money.

Break Out the Sparkling Water and Soda

A fizzy drink is the perfect sidekick to a hot, buttery bag of popcorn. Whether your family is partial to sparkling water or soda, treat yourself to the full movie experience with a special drink. If you’re not keen to give soft drinks to your kids, try mixing a little bit of juice in with some sparkling water.

Turn the Lights Down Low and the Volume Up High

Once the previews have ended, make sure that your living room is nice and dark. Turn up the volume (you are at the movies, after all) and get ready for showtime.

Prepare for Lights, Camera, Action!

It’s time to enjoy your family movie night ! Snuggle in with the ones that you love, enjoy the crunch of your delicious popcorn, and get ready for an evening that’s destined to become a family tradition.

I tried the luxury movie-theater chain Cinépolis. The premium perks didn't outweigh the huge drawbacks that come with them.

  • I'm a frequent moviegoer who tried out the luxury movie-theater chain Cinépolis for the first time.
  • The ticket wasn't that expensive, but the food and service charges seemed a bit pricey.
  • The table-side service was convenient, but it got super distracting throughout the whole movie.

Insider Today

Last year I went to the movies over 60 times.

I usually see them at my local theater chain, AMC, but with fewer American adults going to the movies these days — less than before the coronavirus pandemic — some chains are pulling out all of the stops to draw people in.

And Cinép olis , a theater chain that offers a "luxury movie-going" experience, recently caught my eye.

It's been around since 1971 and is currently one of the biggest movie-theater chains in the world , with over 800 locations worldwide.

Here's what it was like to visit for the first time — and why I'm not sure I'll be back.

Purchasing my ticket online was pretty easy

I wanted to see "Drive-Away Dolls" since it was the week of its release, but the Cinépolis near me didn't have screenings available. It was available at my local AMC, but Cinépolis has about half the screens, so it can't show every movie in theaters.

Instead, I went with my second choice: "Bob Marley: One Love."

I bought my ticket on the Cinépolis site on Friday afternoon for a showing that night. After I selected my movie and showtime, I chose the seat I wanted and paid for my ticket. Plenty of seats were available.

After fees and taxes, my $17 ticket cost just over $20. I'd expected it to cost a bit more since it was for a "luxury" experience — and a ticket to a regular screening at my local AMC around the same time would've cost $21.

I arrived early since wasn't able to order food or drinks in advance

When I arrived, I had the QR code for my ticket pulled up on my phone.

But I didn't see anyone at the entrance of the theater, so I walked right in without having my ticket scanned. Maybe sneaking into showings isn't a huge concern for employees since you must reserve a specific seat.

I got to the theater about 30 minutes before showtime, which is when movie previews actually begin.

Before the previews, Cinépolis showed advertisements for local businesses, movie trivia, and info about the theater.

I thought it was nice that ads were for local places instead of big brands and massive corporations, which is the norm at other chains I visit.

The lounge seats recline all the way back for ultimate comfort

The theater had leather lounge chairs that reclined way back to an almost lying-down position. I was able to put my feet all the way up.

Notably, there was only one button to control the reclining levels of the seats.

There's no way to have your feet down but your seat back at Cinépolis — it's all or nothing. At my local AMC, I can control the recline of the footrest and chair back separately, which makes for a more comfortable experience.

The seats are also set up in pairs and you can lift the armrest in between them. I thought this was a nice touch for couples.

Service came to me with the touch of a button

At Cinépolis, there's no concession stand — the server assigned to your seat takes your order and delivers any food or drinks you request.

Related stories

They put your card on file during your first order and can be called to your seat throughout the movie at the touch of a button.

Unfortunately, the button for my seat was completely missing. I had to use the button for the seat next to me, which wasn't a huge issue.

I wonder what would have happened had someone else been seated there and I didn't have access to a button at all.

There were high-quality food and drink options, but the prices seemed high to me

I could order cocktails, beers, full entrées, desserts, or just snacks.

Many of the options sounded of restaurant quality. I saw lobster grilled cheese, rib-eye sandwiches, burgers, and even grain bowls. The prices also seemed like what you might find at a restaurant, with most dishes between $15 and $20.

Popcorn ($10.50) and soft drinks ($8.50) include free refills throughout the movie.

The fish and chips I'd planned on ordering weren't available, so I went with chicken tenders and fries for $15.50. I also got popcorn.

The chicken tenders tasted high quality, and the fries were crisp and delicious. When I ran out of ketchup, it was easy to call my server and ask for more.

But I still felt the prices seemed a bit high for what I got.

Although it came with unlimited refills, my soda was about $9, and there was only one size available. If you didn't get at least one refill, you wouldn't be drinking your money's worth.

The same thing applies to the bottomless popcorn — it's awesome if you really plan to chow down, but not a great value if you're not.

Lastly, at Cinépolis, you also have to factor in a tip for your server. I did a typical 20%. I could see how a date night or family outing at Cinépolis could get pretty expensive very quickly.

The on-demand service distracted me throughout the movie

It's pretty awesome to get a soda refill halfway through a movie without leaving your seat. However, it's not awesome to listen to the couple next to you order another round of popcorn during the middle of a pivotal movie scene.

The servers were also carrying around tablets with incredibly bright screens, which was distracting once the movie began and the theater got dark.

I found the movie wasn't super loud, perhaps because moviegoers need to be able to communicate with their server during the showing. I kind of missed the seat-shaking intensity I usually experience at movies.

It was also distracting to see so many people using their phone flashlights to examine their food and drinks as they got delivered in the middle of the movie.

About 45 minutes before the movie ended, servers brought out checks. This is usually a pretty high-stakes point in a movie and probably the worst possible time for staff to walk up and down the aisles of the theater, closing tabs and asking people if they need to-go boxes for their food.

That said, the near-constant presence of staff seemed to come with one perk: less bad behavior.

It seemed moviegoers were more likely to behave with theater employees walking around. No one talked during the whole movie, nor did anyone spend most of it taking flash photos of the screen (I've seen both many times).

But this also means it's much more difficult to commit some more beloved movie-theater sins , like sneaking in your own drinks and snacks.

Cinépolis would be great without other attendees, but I'll stick to AMC for now

Cinépolis stood out with its high-quality food and bottomless soft drinks and popcorn, but the table-side service didn't fully wow me.

After all, at many chain theaters, you can schedule food and non-alcoholic drinks to be delivered to your seat when you purchase your ticket.

And when on-call service is applied to a crowded theater, the distractions from other moviegoers take away from the movie. I couldn't imagine seeing something here that demands my full attention, like "Dune: Part Two," at Cinépolis.

I also thought Cinépolis' rewards program sounded pretty good — it's free to join, and customers can eventually earn a free ticket if they spend enough on tickets and concessions (alcohol not included).

But, as someone who loves going to the movies, AMC Stubs A-List is still a much better value. For about $25 a month, I can see three movies a week, about 12 a month. When broken down, each movie ticket is about $2.

I'd consider returning to Cinépolis for specialty showings, like concert films or $5 fan favorites the theater brings back. But for a better experience overall — and a better film selection and value for a frequent moviegoer like me — I'm sticking with AMC.

Judd Apatow Says It’s ‘Wrong’ to Think Comedy Movies Are Dead in Theaters: ‘It Just Requires Another Hit’ Since Hollywood ‘Will Chase Anything That Does Well’

Judd Apatow does not believe comedy movies are dead in theaters. While the genre has largely moved to streaming in recent years (Apatow’s last two directorial efforts debuted on streaming, while the Please Don’t Destroy movie he produced last year, “The Treasure of Foggy Mountain,” skipped theaters and debuted on Peacock), Apatow recently told Vulture that all it will take is one comedy blockbuster in theaters to swing the pendulum away from streaming. Actually, that may have already happened in his eyes.

“But isn’t that like saying a Marvel movie is a comedy?” Vulture asked.

“I don’t think so. It’s not a drama,” Apatow responded. “There are some emotional moments in it, but it’s just wall-to-wall jokes. There’s something about it where I feel like no one wants to give comedy the win there. Like, why can’t we say ‘Barbie’ is a comedy? What other category would it be?”

“I assume it’ll swing back,” Apatow added about comedy films returning to movie theaters in bulk. “The industry does follow the leader…for comedy, it just requires another hit or two. If a movie like ‘The Hangover’ came out and it was a big hit, suddenly everyone would want five more of those. Here’s the thing that most people don’t understand because they’re not in any of those executive suites: There’s a hit and then they just go, ‘Oh, people like that. Make more like that.’ The thinking is not deeper than that. They will just chase anything that does well because people generally are averse to risk-taking.”

Apatow, who has been a fixture at Universal Pictures ever since his feature directorial debut, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” which grossed nearly $180 million worldwide in 2005, pointed to Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” as what the comedy genre needs to bounce back in movie theaters.

Movie theaters weren’t completely devoid of comedy films last year. The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell-starring romantic comedy “Anyone but You” opened ahead of Christmas and has emerged as a box office hit with $216 million worldwide. Jennifer Lawrence’s “No Hard Feelings,” widely publicized as the return of the R-rated comedy in theaters, pulled in decent business with $87 million worldwide last summer.

Head over to Vulture’s website to read Apatow’s interview in its entirety.

‘Water for Elephants’ Review: Beauty Under the Big Top

The circus-themed love story, already a novel and a movie, becomes a gorgeously imaginative Broadway musical.

  • Share full article

A shadow of a large elephant is cast onto the black curtain of a stage with a group of characters at left.

By Jesse Green

First come her ears, floating like ginkgo leaves. Then, from behind a screen, her shadow appears, followed by the marvelous sound of her trumpet. Next to arrive is her disembodied trunk, with a mind of its own, snuffling out friends and enemies and food. Finally, at the end of Act I of the new musical “Water for Elephants,” she is fully assembled: Rosie, the star of the circus, big as a bus and batting her pretty eyes.

This gorgeous sequence, played out over perhaps 20 minutes, is emblematic of the many wonders awaiting audiences at the Imperial Theater, where “Water for Elephants” opened on Thursday. After all, Rosie is not a living creature potentially vulnerable to abuse. Nor is she a C.G.I. illusion. She is not really an illusion at all, in the sense of a trick; you can see the puppeteers operating and inhabiting her. Rather she is a product of the human imagination, including ours in the audience.

What a pleasure it is to be treated that way by a brand-extension musical, a form usually characterized by craftlessness and cynicism. Indeed, at its best, “Water for Elephants” has more in common with the circus arts than it does with by-the-books Broadway. Sure, it features an eventful story and compelling characters, and apt, rousing music by PigPen Theater Co ., a seven-man indie folk collective. But in the director Jessica Stone’s stunning, emotional production, it leads with movement, eye candy and awe.

That’s only appropriate, given the milieu. The musical’s book by Rick Elice, based not just on the 2011 movie but also on the 2006 novel by Sara Gruen , is set among the performers and roustabouts of a ramshackle circus at the depths of the Depression. Escaping an unhappiness we learn about only later, Jacob Jankowski (Grant Gustin) jumps onto a train heading (as his introductory song tells us) “Anywhere.” But really, because the train houses the failing Benzini Brothers troupe, it’s heading everywhere — downhill and fast.

Elice has smartly sped up the action by eliminating one of the two introductory devices that kept the movie’s story at a distance. In the one he retains, a much older Jacob (Gregg Edelman) serves as the narrator of the long-ago events. With pride but also anguish he recalls how, as a young man trained as a veterinarian, he quickly established himself in the chaotic and sometimes violent company of the circus: a hunky James Herriot caring for the medical needs of the animals. Soon, though, he becomes involved in more complicated, dangerous ways.

The complication comes in the form of Marlena, the circus’s star attraction, who performs on horseback. The danger comes from her husband, August, Benzini’s possibly bipolar owner and ringmaster.

How we are introduced to them, and the central conflict, is typical of the production’s theatrical intelligence. First we find Marlena (Isabelle McCalla) tending to Silver Star, her beautiful white stallion, who is clearly in pain. Silver Star is played by two acrobats: Antoine Boissereau operating the head and mane, and Keaton Hentoff-Killian trailing with silks that suggest the body. Jacob, watching Marlena caress and calm the creature with a lovely lullaby called “Easy,” begins to fall in love with her. He also realizes that the horse needs weeks of rest if it’s to survive at all.

But when August (Paul Alexander Nolan) enters the scene, the temperature changes. As he argues that he cannot afford to lose Silver Star even for a day, we see that his hardheadedness and jealousy will put him in danger of losing Marlena as well. The triangle plot is thus established without having to be named, and so is the interconnectedness of love and loss that will emerge as the story’s theme. That theme is then turned wrenchingly poignant as Silver Star’s soul flies up from his body in the form of Boissereau’s aerial act.

The entire show moves in a similar fashion, somehow both concerted and Cubist. Nothing serves just one purpose, including the circus acts; whether hammer throwing or wire walking, they are striking in themselves and also narratively expressive. Watching them we understand, as the story requires, that danger is everywhere, but they also imply the possibility of rescue: Acrobats drop from heights but land as lightly as paper planes.

One reason this works so well is that Elice’s book, especially in the first act, trusts the audience to live with (and profit from) a certain amount of uncertainty. Stepping away from the musical theater handbook, he delivers information not when you expect it but when it serves an underlying emotional logic.

He also steps away more literally, letting the design and movement elements take precedence: the puppetry (by Ray Wetmore & JR Goodman and Camille Labarre), the choreography (Jesse Robb and Shana Carroll), the circus acts (Carroll again) and the design (sets by Takeshi Kata, costumes by David Israel Reynoso, lighting by Bradley King, sound by Walter Trarbach, projections by David Bengali). They really have to be credited en masse because, as sewn together by Stone’s direction, there are no seams between their disciplines.

Stone’s emotionally vivid but not especially visual approach to the staging of “Kimberly Akimbo” — the winner of last year’s Tony Award for best musical — did not prepare me for her work on “Water for Elephants.” You could easily follow the story (if not the characters’ sometimes muddy motivations) even if you didn’t understand English; indeed, I sometimes didn’t because the words, though excitingly sung, are too often mushy. Despite some backloaded, pro forma power ballads, PigPen’s tunes are ideally suited to the setting, but their trenchant lyrics might be more intelligible if they rhymed more accurately.

Still, the songs ace the double-duty test, never repeating catchy choruses just to drill holes in our ears but to expand, modify and turn ideas in different directions. The actors do much the same, playing the full range of their characters’ contradictions, not planting themselves at some bland midpoint. Treated that way, Nolan’s August is a more compelling character than a précis might suggest, and McCalla makes Marlena’s devotion to him as palpable and powerful as her revulsion.

But there are really no weak links. Gustin is dashing and suitably anguished. Edelman dries up what could be the damp narrator role without resorting to too much twinkle. (One glitch: It’s hard to see how the younger and older Jacobs align.) And the supporting roles are all filled with piquant performers (Sara Gettelfinger, Stan Brown, Wade McCollum) who are credibly circuslike, except for one strange anomaly: The clown (Joe De Paul) is actually funny.

Well, miracles do happen, even on Broadway. In building such a huge and heart-filling musical one image at a time, the creators of “Water for Elephants” have disproved the old circus adage behind the title, which holds that you can never deliver enough sustenance for a creature so large and thirsty. Apparently, you can.

Paterson will become a city without a movie theater when the Fabian 8 closes

3-minute read.

PATERSON — The Fabian 8 Cinema, the city's only movie theater, announced that it will close next Sunday, with its manager saying the business never recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The impending shutdown will put Paterson back in the position where it was 15 years ago: a city without a movie theater.

“It’s going to be a big loss for the city,” said Councilman Luis Velez. “We were looking for a movie theater and then we got this one.”

Theater opened in 2010

The Fabian opened at Center City Mall in February 2010 and was applauded as a way to bring customers into the shopping center.

Theater manager Tom Arnold said the Fabian had been successful before the pandemic, attracting 2,000 to 4,000 patrons per week to watch movies on its eight screens. He noted that the theater had been planning renovations and upgrades, such as reclining seats, just before COVID hit.

Attendance at the Fabian has been down by about 75% in the aftermath of the pandemic, with weekly audiences recently ranging between 500 and 1,000 people, Arnold said.

The manager said the Fabian suffered the same fate as other independent small movie theaters, like those that have shut down in Ridgewood and Bergenfield.

What did officials say?

Mayor Andre Sayegh, who frequently posts on social media about him and his family going to the Fabian, said he was saddened by the closure announcement.

“The theater holds a special place in our community for over a decade, and its loss will undoubtedly be felt by residents,” the mayor said. “That is why I am exploring various avenues to keep the theater open, including maintaining discussions with stakeholders and potential investors to secure a viable solution to sustain its operations.”

Sayegh said the Fabian’s demise is part of “a wider trend.”

“The shift in preference for how individuals watch and enjoy movies hurts the bottom line of many theaters, making it difficult to keep them open,” the mayor said. “We will continue to explore opportunities to enhance entertainment options for all residents and stimulate continued economic activity in our city."

Velez said Paterson needs a “plan B” for the movie theater location. “We can’t afford to have empty spaces like that, especially not in the mall,” the councilman said.

It was not clear on Monday morning what the plans will be for filling the movie theater’s space at the mall.

Councilman Michael Jackson blamed the movie theater’s shutdown on the wave of development under Sayegh’s watch that he said has sent rents soaring in the city.

“If you can’t afford to pay your rent, you’re not going to be able to scrape up the money to take your family to the movies,” Jackson said.

Timothee Chalamet Smokes a Cigarette on the Set of Bob Dylan Movie in New Video

T he actor was seen in character while filming ‘A Complete Unknown’ in New York City, transforming into Bob Dylan with a new hair style, costume and more.

From young Willy Wonka to Paul Atreides, and now, to Bob Dylan , Timothée Chalamet is on a roll. The 27-year-old actor was spotted filming his upcoming biopic, A Complete Unknown , in New York City, and he was in character while smoking a cigarette and donning Bob’s curly hairdo.

In a new viral X clip (formerly known as Twitter), the Dune: Part Two star was captured getting out of a car and wearing sunglasses (even though it was seemingly evening). He then made his way across the street after taking a drag of his cigarette. According to multiple outlets, Timmy was filming the scene in downtown Manhattan near El Quijote, wearing a brown coat.

Timmy was also spotted filming a daytime scene, where he sat on a bench wearing a pair of jeans, his brown sueded jacket and matching boots.

The New York City native just wrapped up the press tour for the second installment of Dune . Toward the end of 2023, he was seen in Wonka .

Timmy did his homework on the “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” artist. Earlier this year, he visited Bob’s high school in Minnesota, where he talked to the drama department. The school posted pictures of the students with the movie star via Facebook in January.

“We spent about 45 minutes with Timothée Chalamet yesterday at the historic Hibbing Auditorium. He was a total gem,” Hibbing High School’s drama department wrote. “In town researching all things Bob Dylan for an upcoming biopic, he asked his tour guide if he could meet with the drama students who were working on their competition one act. He sat down with them one on one, and talked acting and theater. He was such a kind and easy going person, and our students were so grateful to have such a special experience.”

Collider previously reported that director James Mangold noted that the film explores the beginnings of a “young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with two dollars in his pocket” before “becoming a worldwide sensation within three years.” The synopsis is expected to unravel how Bob found friends and idols within the music industry, from Pete Seeger to Johnny Cash.

Elle Fanning is set to play Bob’s love interest, Sylvie Russo, and Edward Norton will be playing Pete Seeger.

Biggest Upcoming Movies of 2024: Theatrical and Streaming Release Dates - IGN Image

After 2023’s double Hollywood strike scrambled production schedules, a variety of movies (and TV shows) were delayed and/or saw their planned release dates changed. That means that in 2024 we’re only getting one new MCU movie – Deadpool 3 – though really, Marvel Studios probably needed a bit of a breather anyway. DC also will only see one new movie released in Joker: Folie à Deux, but that’s more to do with the switch to the new James Gunn Universe than because of the strikes.

Elsewhere, there’s a host of new titles to be excited about this year, including the long-awaited arrival of Dune: Part Two – the success of which has all but guaranteed a third film – Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Abigail (a modern riff on Dracula's Daughter from the guys who made Ready or Not), a new Planet of the Apes movie, the return of Furiosa (w/o Mad Max!), and much more.

Read on for the 2024 movies we’re most excited about, and don’t forget all release dates are subject to change…

Theatrical Releases

Godzilla x kong: the new empire.

US Date: March 29

There’ve been a lot of would-be shared universes that have come and gone in the wake of the MCU, but somehow it’s Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse that has persevered among them all, racking up at this point five movies and a TV show. (Perhaps that’s the key? Don’t glut the market with product.) In the confusingly titled Godzilla x Kong , the two monster-bros must team up to face a new giant threat, while the humans of the cast (Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens) work to not annoy us while we wait for the monster fights to happen. You're Next and The Guest's Adam Wingard directs.

US Date: April 5

Dev Patel directs, stars in, and co-writes the revenge thriller Monkey Man from Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions about a young man who works in an underground fight club exacting revenge on the bad guys who are responsible for his mother's death. Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) and Bollywood star Pitobash co-star.

US Date: April 12

Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Dredd) writes and directs this dystopian political thriller about journalists traveling across the United States during a Second American Civil War - between the American government and the separatist "Western Forces," led by Texas and California. Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura star, along with Devs' Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson.

Sasquatch Sunset

Riley Keough, Jesse Eisenberg, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner star in Sasquatch Sunset , which follows a family of Bigfoots. Our reviewer Clint Gage gave the film a 10 out of Sundance, saying it's "an emotional masterpiece of experimental cinema and fart jokes."

US Date: April 19

Universal has been trying to get a new take on their Classic Monsters going for a while – remember the Dark Universe franchise that lasted for one movie ? Abigail comes from the Radio Silence Productions team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella (Ready or Not, the recent Scream films) and is reportedly a riff on 1936’s Dracula’s Daughter, featuring “a group of kidnappers who abduct a band of young people, one of whom ends up being the titular character.” Radio Silence favorite Melissa Barrera, from the trio's two Scream films, stars alongside Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Challengers

US Date: April 26

Judging by the Challengers trailer, director Luca Guadagnino weaves a lighter tale than his 2022 film Bones and All. But looks – and trailers – can be deceiving. Challengers is the story of a married couple of tennis pros (Zendaya and Mike Faist). When the struggling husband must compete in a low-end “Challenger” event, he finds himself playing against his ex-best friend – who also happens to be his wife’s ex-boyfriend (Josh O’Connor).

The Fall Guy

US Date: May 3

Former stuntman David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool 2) joins with former Mouseketeer Ryan Gosling to make a movie about a stuntman which also happens to be based on the 1980s Lee Majors TV show of the same name. Judging by the trailer, The Fall Guy looks to be shooting for that fun mix of action, comedy and romance as Gosling’s character is called off-set to investigate a real-life mystery, all in service of saving his would-be girlfriend (and film director) Emily Blunt’s latest movie.

US Date: May 17

John Krasinski’s directorial follow-up to A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II is IF, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Fiona Shaw, Cailey Fleming, Louis Gossett Jr., and Alan Kim, plus a host of other actors who will be providing their voices (Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and more). The film’s title stands for Imaginary Friend, but these aren’t just teddy bears (see Imaginary, opening in March) but rather imaginary friends who have been abandoned once the children who dreamt them up grew to adulthood and moved on. The film will be a mix of live-action, CGI and melted marshmallow monstrosity.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

US Date: May 24

The last time we met up with those damned, dirty apes was in 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, which effectively ended the story of Andy Serkis’ Caesar. But now director Wes Ball (The Maze Runner trilogy) will continue the story of the apes generations after Caesar. The trailer for the film looks great, but will Kingdom achieve the heights of the Serkis movies? One can only hope. Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand and William H. Macy star.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Charlize Theron’s powerhouse character from Fury Road gets a prequel in George Miller’s Furiosa , with Anya Taylor-Joy taking over the role as the young woman who is torn from her tribe and forced into servitude by Immortan Joe and his awfuls. Chris Hemsworth also appears, only ugly, as a warlord of the road called Dementus. The first trailer for the film makes it look perhaps too much like Fury Road, but if anyone has earned our goodwill it’s Miller, so let’s see where this all goes.

The Garfield Movie

Might as well make a new Garfield theatrical movie, this time a fully animated one. In which case, might as well have Chris Pratt voice the famously lazy cat from Jim Davis' comic strip. That’s who we have handed vocal duties for all our beloved characters now, right? What We Do in the Shadows’ Harvey Guillén voices Odie the dog, Samuel L. Jackson takes on Vic, Garfield's long-lost cat dad, and Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein and Bowen Yang also are part of the cast.

A (sacrilegious, to some) Crow reboot has been in the works for the last two decades and now it's finally arrived with IT's Bill Skarsgård in the iconic Eric Draven role (and singer FKA Twigs as the doomed Shelly). Will this version be going for a more direct adaptation, from James O'Barr's famed comic series, or will it follow the blueprint of the 1994 Alex Proyas film? Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, and Laura Birn co-star.

Inside Out 2

US Date: June 14

Amy Poehler returns as Joy for Inside Out 2, but Riley, the girl Joy and her fellow emotions live inside, is now a teenager… which means Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust have to make room for Anxiety (Maya Hawke) and maybe/almost certainly a host of new, disruptive emotions. Kelsey Mann takes over the director's chair for this sequel from Inside Out’s (and Pixar mainstay) Pete Docter.

Image from Bad Boys for Life.

The third film in the Bad Boys series, Bad Boys for Life, was released in 2020 (and did much better than expected), so Bad Boys 4 – which is not the final title of the film – is coming fairly quickly considering the 17-year gap between Bad Boy 2 and Bad Boys 3, and the eight-year gap between the first film and the second. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are of course back again, with Bad Boys for Life and Ms. Marvel directors Adil & Bilall also returning for more fun.

The Bikeriders

US Date: June 21

Inspired by a '60s photo-book, The Bikeriders stars Killing Eve/Free Guy's Jodie Comer along with Austin Butler, Michael Shannon, Norman Reedus, and Tom Hardy. Directed by Midnight Special's Jeff Nichols, the film follows the rise of a fictional Chicago outlaw motorcycle club as it evolves into a violent organized crime syndicate.

A Quiet Place: Day One

US Date: June 28

Director Michael Sarnoski left an impression with 2021's Nic Cage drama Pig, and he’s certainly an interesting choice for this prequel/spin-off to the John Krasinski/Emily Blunt horror series. Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things' Eddie Munson!), Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou star in the film, which will presumably fill in some of the blanks regarding the nasty aliens from the first two installments (though Part II did already give us a flashback to the start of their invasion).

Horizon: An American Saga

US Dates: Chapter 1: June 28, Chapter 2: Aug. 16

Kevin Costner loves himself some epic Westerns (He did win Best Picture, Director and Actor Oscars for Dances With Wolves after all!) and so he’s back with “a two-part theatrical event” that he directed, stars in, produced, and reportedly also financed himself . Truly, the American way! Set both before and after the Civil War, the film is about the expansion of the American West, with Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson and many more familiar faces filling out the cast.

Despicable Me 4

US Date: July 3

It was February of 2022 when Illumination and Universal announced Despicable Me 4’s release date of July 3, 2024, and while not much has been heard about the film since – we don’t even have a trailer – the sixth film in the series (don’t forget the two Minions movies) seems like an inevitability. Reportedly, Steve Carell will be back as former supervillain Gru, joined by Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Miranda Cosgrove and Steve Coogan.

US Date: July 5

The third film in Ti West's X trilogy, after X and Pearl, once again stars Mia Goth (who is also a producer along with West) as Maxine, the sole survivor of the first film who is now living in the Los Angles of the 1980s and ready to take her porn career to the next level.

Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat's Daughter, Gretel & Hansel, son of Psycho's Anthony Perkins) directs Nicolas Cage and It Follows/The Guest's Maika Monroe in the story of a rookie FBI agent (Monroe) assigned to an unsolved serial killings case overflowing with evidence of the occult. Longlegs also features Alicia Witt and Blair Underwood.

US Date: July 19

You wanna see cows getting sucked up by tornadoes on the big screen, right? Of course you do! (And we also all hope that the cows will be just fine afterward.) And hence, Twisters was born – the 28-years-later sequel to the memorable Bill Paxton/Helen Hunt disaster flick Twister. Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones will star in the film, with Lee Isaac Chung, who was Oscar-nominated for 2020’s Minari, directing. Getting an Oscar nom is one thing, but successfully getting a cow to spin in a tornado while your leads make wisecracks? That will take true talent.

Deadpool & Wolverine

US Date: July 26

Yep, Marvel Studios has just one movie coming out in 2024, and it’s the third entry in a series that didn’t even used to be part of the MCU! That said, Deadpool doesn’t really play by regular universe rules anyway. And if the leaks from this film’s set are to be believed, that will continue to be the case as all manner of non-MCU Marvel characters could show up here. That includes Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who teams with Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson again after their unfortunate meeting in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Borderlands

US Date: Aug. 9

Director Eli Roth (Hostel, Thanksgiving) brings the intergalactic Mad Max-inspired game franchise to the big screen with Cate Blanchett starring as the super siren, Lilith - alongside Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Tannis, Barbie and Ahsoka's Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Janina Gavankar as Commander Knoxx, and Jack Black voicing Claptrap. “I didn't want to have to be too slavish [to the game],” Roth told IGN in November. “I didn't just want to film the game. We wanted to tell a great story on its own, but of course it's loaded with Easter eggs for the fans.”

Alien: Romulus

US Date: Aug. 16

How many Alien movies does this make now? Not counting the Alien vs. Predator films (why would you?), Alien: Romulus is the seventh installment. (There’s also a TV series currently in the works.) Directed by Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead 2013, Don’t Breathe), Romulus is set between the first movie and the second, which actually gives the filmmaker a wide time period to play with (since – pushes up glasses – Ripley was in cryogenic sleep for 57 years when Aliens opens). Not much else is known about the film at this point, but Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) will star.

Kraven the Hunter

US Date: Aug. 30

The second film from Sony's Spider-Man Universe to be released in 2024, Kraven the Hunter has been a long time coming, having previously been scheduled for January 2023, and then October. But the latest attempt at turning a Spider-Man villain into an anti-hero is finally arriving this summer, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson playing the title role, a master hunter who also has superpowers. Will the film connect to Spider-Man in any meaningful way? Probably not, judging by how Morbius and the Venom films have gone, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

US Date: Sept. 6

Michael Keaton already came back as Batman, so why not as Betelgeuse? That he’s teaming with original Beetlejuice (and Batman!) director Tim Burton only makes this sequel sound more intriguing. Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote the script, and the star of that show, Jenna Ortega, will also appear in the film alongside original cast members Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux will also be hanging with the ghost with the most for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which comes 36 years after the first film.

Transformers One

US Date: Sept. 13

The animated Transformers One is an origin story for everyone's favorite robots in disguise that is being directed by Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4). Chris Hemsworth voices a young Optimus Prime opposite a presumably also young Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry) in a story that depicts how the two went from allies to legendary foes destined for toy shelves everywhere. Also starring are Scarlett Johansson (Elita), Keegan-Michael Key (Bumblebee), Jon Hamm (Sentinel Prime) and Laurence Fishburne (Alpha Trion).

US Date: Sept. 27

The first Saw movie debuted in 2004 and was such a hit that a sequel came every year after through 2010. There was a seven-year break after that (Jigsaw fatigue, don't you know), but there have been three films since then, including Saw X from September 2023. That movie made about $107 million, and so we’re back on the yearly schedule (for now anyway) with Saw XI coming in September 2024. Will the long-dead Jigsaw return again ? Probably!

Joker: Folie à Deux

US Date: Oct. 4

Hey, like Marvel Studios, DC also only has one movie coming out this year! (Unlike Marvel Studios, however, this one isn’t a part of their shared universe.) Joaquin Phoenix returns as the Joker along with the previous film’s director Todd Phillips, and this time they have a not-so-secret weapon joining them in Lady Gaga, who will be playing Harley Quinn in the sequel. The original Joker came out in 2019 and was supposed to be a one-off, but it’s funny how that can change after you bring in a billion dollars worldwide and win a couple of Oscars (including Best Actor for Phoenix).

US Date: Oct. 18

2022’s Smile was an unlikely horror hit, moving from a planned streaming debut on Paramount+ to a bona fide $200 million-plus theatrical release. So you can bet your pearly whites that a sequel is coming, and that it’ll be perfectly timed to a Halloween release as well. Parker Finn, who made his feature debut with the first film, returns to direct Smile 2, though few other details are known about the project at this time.

Venom: The Last Dance

US Date: Oct 25

Image from Sony Pictures.

Here’s the third and final film of the year in the awkwardly named Sony's Spider-Man Universe line-up, and it’s also the one that has the best chance at success. Tom Hardy’s first two Venom movies were over the top but fun, and there’s no denying the appeal of this character to fans. Hardy’s back of course as the dual-personality man-monster, joined this time out by Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor, though it remains to be seen what roles they’ll play. You can bet at least one of them will be bonded with a symbiote though.

US Date: Oct. 25

Leigh Whannell nailed his Universal Monster redo The Invisible Man in 2020, and now he’s got a Wolf Man take in the works with Blumhouse producing. Christopher Abbott (Poor Things) stars, replacing Ryan Gosling in what will presumably be the hairy title role.

The Amateur

US Date: Nov. 8

Rami Malek stars in this thriller from director James Hawes, which is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Littell. The book was previously made into a 1981 film that starred John Savage and Christopher Plummer. The Amateur’s plot deals with a CIA cryptographer whose wife is killed in a terrorist attack, and the lengths he goes to for revenge, including blackmailing his employer.

Paddington in Peru

Man, you people really love Paddington. Surprisingly, though, it's been seven years since Paddington 2. The previous film's director, Paul King, was busy making Wonka with Timothée Chalamet, so new helmer Dougal Wilson steps in for his feature debut. In this installment, Paddington and the Brown family do indeed visit Peru, though Emily Mortimer takes over as Mrs. Brown, replacing Sally Hawkins. Ben Whishaw is back as the voice of Paddington, as is Hugh Bonneville as Henry Brown. Other cast members include Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas.

Gladiator 2

US Date: Nov. 22

It’s hard to believe this movie is actually happening. Sure, we’ve heard talk about it for years, but the first Gladiator was such a big deal back in 2000 – it even became a running gag on The Sopranos at one point – and the Ridley Scott film ended so definitively, and beautifully, that a sequel always seemed like it ran the risk of becoming too much of a good thing. It still does, as a matter of fact, but Scott is back to direct all the same from a script by David Scarpa, who also wrote Napoleon and All the Money in the World for the helmer. The story focuses on Lucius (Paul Mescal), Connie Nielsen’s son from the first film who is now an adult and, presumably, ready to do some gladiator-ing . Nielsen is back for the sequel and Denzel Washington also stars.

US Date: Nov. 27

Image from Moana.

Moana 2 is coming this November and it sure came as a shock when it was announced just this past February . Given how massively huge Moana has been for Disney+, the decision was made to convert and rework what was to be a Moana animated series into a solid theatrical sequel. Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will reprise their roles as Moana and demigod Maui, respectively, for an all new roaring adventure.

With a puff of red smoke, the musical Wicked is teleporting to the big screen in this adaptation from director Jon M. Chu (In the Heights). A retelling of how Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) became the Wicked Witch of the West of Wizard of Oz infamy unfolds here, with Ariana Grande playing Galinda Upland (destined to be the Good Witch). This first film is also known as Wicked: Part One, with Part Two currently scheduled for a November 26, 2025, release.

Untitled Karate Kid Movie

US Date: Dec. 13

Image via Sony

For this film, Ralph Macchio, the OG KK, is teaming with Jackie Chan, who starred in the 2010 “reimagining” of The Karate Kid – which I guess is now just part of the bigger Karate Kid Cinematic Universe. The pair will play their characters from their respective films, but conspicuous by its absence in the announcement of this movie was any mention of the gang from the Cobra Kai TV show – especially William Zabka's Johnny Lawrence. Sony says a “global search” is underway to find the new Karate Kid who will presumably be trained by Chan and Macchio here. Just give us a high-school-karate-rumble or we riot… with a high-school-karate-rumble, I guess.

Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Blade Runner: Black Lotus) directs this animated feature, which reportedly takes place about 200 years before The Hobbit. Brian Cox will voice Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan, the namesake of what we all recognize as… Helm’s Deep! (Hey, I have that LEGO set.) Confusingly, this film has nothing to do with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV show (that takes place in Middle-earth’s second age) other than being based on a small sliver of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work.

Mufasa: The Lion King

US Date: Dec. 20

This prequel to Disney's "live-action" The Lion King comes from Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, The Underground Railroad), and tells of the earlier lives of Mufasa and Scar (Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr.), those lion brothers who are destined for tragedy and betrayal. This is what Jenkins told IGN about the film in 2022: “I think for kids it's really important to understand that people aren't born perfect, they aren't just kings, their experiences shape them. So you can expect to go on this journey and understand how [Mufasa’s] friends, his family, his experiences shaped him and made him the person he is.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

movie theater homework

The Sonic the Hedgehog world dominance continues with the third installment in the Ben Schwartz-starring live-action (with some animation, of course) series. Presumably Colleen O’Shaunnessey and Idris Elba will also be back to voice the Blue Blur’s pals Tails and Knuckles, and Shadow the Hedgehog will also make his debut in the movie. Sonic 3 is directed by Jeff Fowler, making this a Hedgehog hat trick for him.

Robert Eggers, the beautiful madman behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, and most recently The Northman, is turning his attention to the horror of Nosferatu some 102 years after the original F.W. Murnau film was released. Who else but Bill Skarsgård has been cast as Count Orlok, while Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are among the humans forced to deal with the vampire. Funnily enough, Willem Dafoe also appears in the film, having already played a vampiric version of actor Max Schreck (who starred as Orlok in 1922) in the fictionalized making-of Nosferatu film, Shadow of the Vampire.

Streaming Releases

Rebel moon – part two: the scargiver.

US Date: April 19, Netflix

Zack Snyder’s latest would-be franchise came from a Star Wars pitch that he had originally taken to Lucasfilm, and he has big cross-media plans for the concept. That of course includes sequels, so Part Two is already slotted for an April 2024 release. Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, and Anthony Hopkins star in the story of a ruthless empire that must be defeated by a mysterious outsider.

It only took 30 years to get a fourth Beverly Hills movie off the blocks, after a lot of trying, but now Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot are all back as Detroit police lieutenant Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills after his estranged daughter's (Taylour Paige) life is threatened. She and Foley team up with her ex-boyfriend (Joseph Gordon-Levitt ), plus Foley's old pals, to stop the bad guys. Also starring Kevin Bacon.

US Date : Jan. 5

When I was a little kid, I was afraid to go in the pool after an ill-advised attempted viewing of Jaws. That fear lasted for a looong time (years?), so one can only imagine how folks are gonna do with the latest team-up between mega-horror-producers James Wan and Jason Blum. Night Swim stars Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon in a tale involving a… haunted swimming pool. Sure, laugh now – and then enjoy spending the whole summer sweating in the heat at a safe distance from any refreshing, man-made watering hole.

US Date : Jan. 12

Don’t worry – it’s a musical! The trailer for the 2024 version of Mean Girls that dropped in November weirdly neglected to indicate that small fact, making it seem like an odd rehash. But indeed this film is based on the Broadway musical incarnation of the 2004 Lindsay Lohan classic. Angourie Rice (who you may recognize from the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies among other things) fills Lohan’s shoes, with Tina Fey back again as screenwriter (and as Ms. Norbury).

The Beekeeper

You know how your grandparents fell for that phishing scam that one time? Well, Jason Statham just hates that, and he’s ready to kill a lot of bad people because of it in The Beekeeper. Suicide Squad and Fury director David Ayer teams with the British badass to get revenge for the mom from The Cosby Show (Phylicia Rashad), even if that means cutting a guy's fingers off and then tying him to the back of a truck that then drives off a bridge. That’s what you get for running a call center, dude!

Soul, Turning Red, Luca

US Dates : Jan. 12, Feb. 9, March 22

These three Disney Pixar movies never got full theatrical releases in the US due to the COVID-19 pandemic, instead going straight to Disney+. But now they’ll finally make it to the big screen in the first quarter of 2024, and each will be accompanied by a short film as well (“Burrow” for Soul, “Kitbull” for Turning Red, and “For the Birds” for Luca).

US Date : Feb. 2 in theaters, Apple TV+ date TBA

How perfect is casting Henry Cavill as "Agent Argylle," a super-spy who is actually just the cartoonish creation of novelist Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard)? Matthew Vaughn certainly knows a thing or two about spy movies, and how to play with the conventions of the genre, having directed a Kingsman or three, and Argylle looks to follow suit as Conway encounters “real” spies like Sam Rockwell’s shaggy assassin. Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, Dua Lipa, and Ariana DeBose also star.

Lisa Frankenstein

US Date : Feb. 9

Diablo Cody scripted this horror comedy about a teenager (Kathryn Newton) who, you guessed it, reanimates the dead – specifically the corpse of her dreams (via a tanning machine). Directed by Zelda Williams (the late Robin Williams’ daughter), Lisa Frankenstein looks to be one part Jennifer’s Body, one part Heathers, and potentially all parts fun.

US Date : Feb. 14

2024 is going to be a light year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with only one film being released by the studio. But don’t worry, because Sony's Spider-Man Universe, as the studio calls it, is ready to step in with three different Marvel-adjacent movies. The first of the year will be Madame Web, which stars Dakota Johnson as the psychic Cassandra Webb, Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, Celeste O'Connor as Mattie Franklin, and Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, all of whom have assumed one Spider-persona or another in the comics. Will Madame Web break the Morbius curse and be, you know, good? Only the spider knows for now…

Drive-Away Dolls

US Date : Feb. 23

The Coen brothers are kinda making their own movies separate from one another lately, and that's OK! For his part, Ethan has this comedy up next, starring Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as a pair of young women who hit the road in search of one of those good old “fresh starts.” Soon enough, they’re mixed up with a variety of weird and criminal types, not to mention co-stars Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp and Matt Damon.

Dune: Part Two

US Date : March 1

The first installment of Denis Villeneuve's Dune was a hit, and though Part Two was delayed because of the Hollywood strikes, it is now scheduled for a March release. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are back along with most of the first film's cast, while newcomers Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux are all landing on planet Arrakis for the first time. We’re particularly looking forward to Butler (Elvis) as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the role played by Sting in the 1984 film.

US Date : March 8

Imaginary friends come in all shapes and sizes, and that includes sometimes just being total assholes. Case in point: Chauncey, the teddy bear in Blumhouse’s Imaginary who, judging by the film’s trailer, has it out for the little girl who finds him in the basement of her new home. Never mind that he’s not really imaginary since he’s a corporeal, well, teddy bear and all. Suffice to say that, imaginary or not, he wants to hurt folks. DeWanda Wise and Tom Payne star in the Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2, Fantasy Island) film.

Kung Fu Panda 4

DreamWorks Animation’s fourth installment in the Kung Fu Panda series of animated films will be directed by Mike Mitchell (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Trolls) and Stephanie Ma Stine (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) will serve as co-director. Jack Black returns for the film, which will be released eight years after Part 3, as his character Po faces off against a new villain named the Chameleon (Viola Davis). Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) also joins the voice cast as Han, the leader of the Den of Thieves.

US Date: March 21, Prime Video

Though Roadhouse reboot director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) pushed hard for a theatrical release (and then boycotted the SXSW premiere because of it), the latest story of zen bouncer Dalton, previously played by the late Patrick Swayze, is headed to Prime Video. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who ends up working at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys, Roadhouse looks to become a "regular Saturday night thing" for a whole new generation. Also starring the UFC's Conor McGregor, The Suicide Squad's Daniela Melchior, and Shrinking's Jessica Williams.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

I refuse to make a “who you gonna call” joke here, though I suppose I just did despite my best intentions. Anyway, the franchise of ghostbusting continues with a direct sequel to 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, whether or not that film’s bustin’ made you feel good, as Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace return to action after New York City is frozen by a force from beyond. And yes, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and even William Atherton all return from the 1984 film, though for how many minutes of actual running time remains to be seen.

What films are you most looking forward to in 2024? Let’s discuss in the comments!
