Ghoomer movie review: Saiyami Kher, Abhishek Bachchan go full tilt in this tale of damaged characters

Ghoomer movie review: abhishek bachchan reminds you in bits of his illustrious father (amitabh bachchan appears in a cameo here) especially when he is delivering a sozzled monologue, but remains a trope..

movie review ghoomar bollywood

A terrible accident dashes the dreams of an aspiring cricketer who wants to play for the Indian team. An alcoholic grump barrels into her life, and uses lashes of withering scorn and foul temper to resurrect her. The push-pull relationship between the two forms the crux of R Balki’s ‘Ghoomer ’, which ratchets his familiar logic vs magic style to a point where we are constantly forced to pendulum between the two, with mixed results.

The best sight in ‘Ghoomer’ is Anina Dixit’s (Saiyami Kher) upright carriage, not hiding her stump of a right arm which ends just below her elbow. It’s just there, as much a part of her as the full arm was, before the accident. And that is a triumph. But it makes you think: what is the full messy, painful spectrum of feelings that Anina, who used her right hand to whack a ball to the boundary so effortlessly, feels before she came to that acceptance? How does she reach this point so fast?

movie review ghoomar bollywood

But the internal conflict in Anina is not what the writers spend their time on. From a piercing scream that is meant to mirror her pain when it comes to the loss of her ‘phantom limb’, the film switches its attention to the saviour who will rescue the girl from herself. Padam Singh Sodhi aka Paddy (Abhishek Bachchan) staggers about drunkenly, shooting mean little aphorisms at the people closest to him, which includes an adoptive sister in transwoman Rasika (Ivanka Das). Paddy is a stand-in for scores of ‘Whiplash’-style movie coaches who believe in toughening up their wards by being harsh, said harshness predictably the result of past personal hurt: Bachchan goes at it full tilt, reminding you in bits of his illustrious father (appearing in a cameo here) especially when he is delivering a sozzled monologue, but remains a trope.

Anina’s family — a warm cocoon of a grandmother (Shabana Azmi, in great form), a father (Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, showing an endearing side), and two brothers — forms a contrast to the darkness the coach exudes. She also has a supportive boyfriend in her childhood sweetheart Jeet (Angad Bedi) who is content to play second fiddle, and be around whenever she needs him. But it would have been nice to know a little more about what makes him tick, other than an expository line about having sold off his million dollar company in the US, and returned home. What, exactly, does he do now?

In keeping its gaze so firmly on the reluctant student-strict teacher duo, the film reduces the other characters to the periphery. Why does the green-juice making grandma, a Roger Federer fan who goes for impassivity rather than showy delight, take a backstep in the healing-cum-training of her beloved granddaughter? What do the two brothers do, other than being the butt of jokes about overeating? Why does the trans person handle Paddy’s bile so sweetly, without once giving it back? How does, in fact, Paddy literally take over Anina’s life, having started on a bad note, and never stepping back from it? And the other players, Anina’s team-mates, are never more than ciphers.

‘Ghoomer’ is not interested in detailing these nuances. What it wants you to do is to rejoice in the twinning-and-winning of both its damaged central characters. characters. Tears do well up when we see Anina’s face, all flushed at her climactic win, despite it feeling stretched and contrived: Kher, who has been a cricketer herself, who knows all about stance, is a stand-out.

Ghoomer review: Abhishek Bachchan, Saiyami Kher's stellar acts will move you

Ghoomer review: r balki's latest film is a sports drama about a cricketer who loses her right arm and learns to reclaim her life..

It's the night of Diwali and Saiyami Kher comes to wish her coach Abhishek Bachchan , and tells him it's a day to be happy. In return, he asks her to bowl in torchlight while she's wearing a saree. She does and nails it. It's a beautifully written and shot scene, intended to show how one can push their boundaries. And Ghoomer has several such goosebumps-inducing moments. From practising on a makeshift pitch in the backyard to playing in a stadium in England, Ghoomer immerses you in the world where heart meets logic. It's a well-made film that tells us the power of self-belief and never give up attitude in life. It inspires and empowers at the same time.

Ghoomer review: Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher in the film.

Director R Balki doesn't beat around the bush about what he wants to say or show through the film, and he straightaway dives into the journey of Anina (Saiyami), a cricketer with a dream of securing a spot in the Indian National Women's Cricket team. And when she does get selected, fate has something else in store for her. Days before leaving for the tournament, she loses her right arm in an accident. Having lost all hope to ever play cricket again, she gets suicidal thoughts until one day when Padam Singh Sodhi aka Paddy sir (Abhishek), a failed and frustrated former cricketer, who is now an alcoholic too, comes knocking at her door. The next day, she's at his door, looking for a second chance at life, at the game and at being a winner. How Paddy turns her coach and how she turns into a left-arm bowler from a batter is what Ghoomer takes us through.

Strong writing and uncomplicated screenplay

Ghoomer is loosely based on the true-life story of a late athlete who suffered a catastrophic hand injury and went on to won two Olympic gold. Balki's has co-written it with Rahul Sengupta and Rishi Virmani and the film rides heavily on empathy. With a strong writing and uncomplicated screenplay, he effortlessly manages to make you connect with his characters. Be it Anina's struggle or Paddy's despair, you feel empathetic towards both. While Anina's condition makes you feel helpless, at no point Balki shows her in a pitiable state and that I truly liked.

In another scene, Paddy's emotional monologue recounting how his journey in cricket lasted for a single match and he could never experience what a winner feels, compels you to think and even get teary-eyed. And his desire to experience what a winner feels, hits you hard. Later, the scene when he takes out his worn-out shoes and dirty jersey beautifully talks to us about unfulfilled goals in life. Balki makes these emotionally charged portions reach the audience's heart with so much ease. Also, I liked how he has layered the emotions with a lot of humour in the commentary box during the match where Amitabh Bachchan is having a banter with the Aussie commentator, and in the stands when Shabana is telling the England coach to sit down and not block her view while everyone is dancing to the Ghoomer step.

At 2 hours 20 minutes, Ghoomer is crisp and rarely appears sluggish. Amid other things, Balki also touches upon gender equality, discrimination in sports, importance of education and superstitious beliefs that often come into play. Vishal Sinha's cinematography deserves a special mention the way he has visualised the cricket scenes. From the aerial shots of the stadium to panning between the stands and the pitch, he captures the essence of Ghoomer magnificently.

Perfect casting

Other than a great story and writing, Ghoomer rides high on its perfect casting and on-point performances. Abhishek is terrific and has put his A game forward. I crave to watch him do such nuanced and eccentric roles, and he does full justice to them. Though he is ruthless and unsympathetic as Paddy, his character has an emotional arc that you can't miss. Also, his drunk scenes would instantly remind you of his father Amitabh Bachchan. The variety senior Bachchan has shown in such characters is unmatched, and junior Bachchan does seem to imbibe some of those traits and you sense traces of those in his performance.

A still from Ghoomer.

Delivering an equally brilliant act in a physically demanding role is Saiyami, who comes as close as possible to her character. I don't think any other actor could have portrayed Anina better than Saiyami. The kind of conviction and confidence she shows, and owns her ground in each frame, is just exceptional. While her cricket background does elevate her performance and make the character look more believable, it's worth mentioning that being a right-hander in real life, her extensive training to be a left-handed bowler for the film calls for an applause. Watching her acing her chopping skills in the kitchen and being a pro while cleaning the backyard are to create her practice pitch are a delight. And her bowling shots in slo-mo with her curls flying in the air are like poetry in motion.

Kabir Khan 2.0

There's a sense of comfort and pleasant onscreen camaraderie that Abhishek and Saiyami and their scenes together look powerful. Paddy teaching Anina unconventional techniques and inventing a new style of bowling called Ghoomer while overcoming her shortcomings, will in parts remind you of SRK's Kabir Khan from Chak De! India where he tells his physically exhausted team to go for a run at 5 in the morning.

Among others, Shabana Azmi is heartwarming. Her scenes showing off her knowledge about cricket and being Anina's biggest cheerleader touch your heart, though I felt her character sketch takes a dip in the post-accident scenes and she doesn't contribute much to Anina's prep as a bowler. In a scene where Saiyami tells Shabana about her selection in the team, she responds saying, 'Hum Federer ke followers hain, we don't show emotions'. That's funny and cute. Jeet (Angad Bedi), Anina's boyfriend lends a great support and gives a restrained performance, never going overboard with his emotions. Paddy's trans sister, Rasika (Ivanka Das) is a welcome addition to the cast, and while she is mostly there for comic relief, the message of inclusivity comes through well. Not to miss -- Amitabh Bachchan's cameo is the sweetest ever and in a handful of scenes we see him in, he's a treat to watch. From his poetic dialogues to witty one-liners, he puts a smile on everyone's face. No one knows better than Balki how to utilise Big B's screen presence.

All said and done, one thing I don't understand in most sports film is that why does it always take a failed sportsperson to make another player realise their potential and worth? Why can't someone's success story also act as a similar motivation and encouragement to push someone? Nevertheless, Balki's Ghoomer gives a fairly convincing background story to Abhishek's character that you want to question less and believe more of what you're watching on screen.

Then, there's this one dialogue -- 'Pichle over ke nrityakala ke baad wapas cricket' -- said by one of the commentators referring to Anina's ghoomer style bowling, which bothered me a bit, and I really wish it was avoided in the script. I felt it somewhere contradicted the whole intention behind Ghoomer and disregarded the new bowling style that left everyone awestruck.

Ghoomer will bowl you over with its inspiring story, intriguing screenplay, impressive performances and a smooth blend of entertainment and messaging that fills you with pride and a sense of fulfilment. A pure family entertainer to be enjoyed in theatres, the film doesn't disappoint in any department.

Ghoomer

Ghoomer Devesh Sharma, August 18, 2023

  • Times Of India

critic's rating:  4.0/5 Anina (Saiyami Kher) is a young batting prodigy who is selected to play for the Indian women cricketer’s team. However, just before the eve of flying away to England, she loses her right hand in a road accident. Her dream shattered, she loses the will to live. At this juncture, Padam Singh Sodhi (Abhishek Bachchan), “Paddy” to his friends, enters her life. Paddy is a failed cricketer, who played for India for exactly one international test, before a freak injury shunted him out of the top echelon. He’s a man made up of contradictions, full of hope and bitterness in equal measure. He holds the world in disdain and is slowly drinking himself to death and yet is able to motivate Anina to overcome her handicap. He transforms her from a batter to a world class spin bowler, making her handicap work in her favour. She’s able to realise her dream thanks to his mentorship and makes a place for herself again in the national team. The climax sees her helping her team win a one-day match against England. It’s a triumph of spirit, of endurance and grants redemption to Paddy as well. Ghoomer is Balki’s ode to women empowerment as well as inclusivity. Rasika (Ivanka Das), Paddy’s rakhi sister is a trans woman whom Paddy helped financially towards her operation. The relationship they have is akin to what siblings share. They fight, bicker but also care for each other a lot and are there for each other during times of need. Anna’s father and brothers love her to death and root for her always. And she finds another pillar of support in the form of childhood crush Jeet (Angad Bedi), who is happy to play second fiddle to her. Her biggest supporter is her dadi (Shabana Azmi) who is a cricket fanatic, knowing statistics of past greats by heart and has homely advice for every situation. Balki is able to convincingly portray a loving, happy family who want Anina to come out of depression and live life again. Juxtaposed to them is Paddy, a harsh, bitter man who acts as Mr Miyagi, using occupational therapy of his own design to get her going. His barbs and unorthodox methods work their magic and Anina not only learns to overcome her handicap but also gets healed in spirit. The sport choreography is done well and you do get the feel of an actual match during the climax. The cherry on the cake is Amitabh Bachchan’s cameo as a celebrity commentator who is totally biassed towards the Indian team. It was lovely to see veteran Shabana Azmi giving an understated performance as a caring grandmother who wants the world for her granddaughter. Angad Bedi should be applauded for playing a character who takes a back seat, letting the woman he loves be in the driving seat. Balki knows how to give life to flawed characters and in Paddy and Anina, he finds counterpoints which complete each other. Paddy is shown to be a failure in the eyes of the world but a large heart beats beneath his gruff exterior. He’s tough on Anina as he understands this is his chance to taste victory again, something he wasn’t able to do earlier. Balki has been able to extract a sublime performance from Abhishek Bachchan. It can arguably be said to be one of his best so far. The scene where he drunkenly waxes eloquent on success and failure holds your attention like the Amitabh Bachchan monologues of yore. No wonder the father is being so proud of the son on social media. The actor looks like the perfect coach in the film. His mannerisms would remind you of your own strict sports teacher. Anina in the earlier portions is full of sunshine and light and we see that light getting dimmed after the accident, before bursting forth in its full glory again. Saiyami sails through all the graphs of her character like a pro. She’s good in emotional scenes and is completely at ease when it comes to playing cricket as well. Her body language in cricketing scenes is on point. Watch the film for its lovely message and for the powerful performances by the two leads, Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher.

Story: Just before making her dream debut in international cricket as a batsman, Anina Dixit (Saiyami Kher) loses her right hand in a freak accident. This ends her desire to live, until she stumbles upon an eccentric former cricketer turned alcoholic, Paddy (Abhishek Bachchan). Review: R Balki’s Ghoomer, prioritises magic over logic (also a fantastic monologue by Abhishek), to tell a tale of human resilience and vulnerability. The film is inspired by the story of Károly Takács, the late Hungarian right-hand shooter who won two Olympic gold medals with his left hand after his other hand was seriously injured. Barring a few like Jayprad Desai’s outstanding cricket biopic ‘Kaun Pravin Tambe?’ (2022), Indian sports movies have largely been limited to the formulaic rags-to-riches theme. Politics within the team, team selection process and financial struggles of an athlete have dominated the narrative. R Balki’s Ghoomer breaks this template to give you a poignant and powerful tale on human resilience through cricket. In true Balki style, gender and age-related roles, superstitions and stereotypes are dismissed seamlessly. Shabana Azmi brimming with a youthful spirit plays Anina’s cricket expert granny. A self-proclaimed Roger Federer fan (which the senior actress is in real life, too), her character’s knowledge of ICC cricket rules and regulations, cricket trivia and technique to recipes of health drinks for pro athletes, works well to shatter the notion that women don’t get statistics. This makes you wonder, why female cricket enthusiasts predominantly end up as cricket anchors and not experts. The tortured yet endearing relationship between the rude coach and his player, is a common trope. Paddy resorting to a cruel training-toxic coach approach, is predictable but effective (remember Whiplash?). The film gains from their fiery conversations and differences. Paddy (Padam Singh Sodhi), is a loner who drowns his sorrows in a secluded house. His strange encounter with Anina changes their course of lives. He offers to train her so she could re-enter the Indian team as a one-handed bowler. He reminds himself, “Winners ko kaisay lagta hai, yeh ek baar mehsoos karna hai.” What makes the disgruntled misfit help Anina and transform her weakness into strength, forms the story. Paddy shares a strange relationship with the women in his life. This includes his house help, transwoman Rasika (feisty Ivanka Das) and an aspiring cricketer battling a life-altering disability. We hear of his good deeds through Rasika, but that side of him is long buried under a brutally impolite, ill-mannered persona. The only time he refrains from passing a barrage of snide remarks is when he’s sleeping. Years of rejection have turned his anger into stoic silence. He remembers, “I dreamt of playing for India one day and I played for India only for a day.” Meryl Streep’s introduction in the ‘Only Murders’… series as an actress who was never successful, sums up Paddy’s character. “All in pursuit of a moment in the spotlight, where you hope someone might see you and say, “where have you been”. What if those magic words never come and it's only rejection, over and over again?” It takes courage for an actor to play a character that speaks his truth. Underrated for too long, Ghoomer gives Abhishek his due. He bowls the best delivery of his career. The self-reflection makes it all the more real. The fact that Saiyami Kher is a cricketer-turned-actress, makes her the best choice for this extremely challenging part. One-handed bowling with just the left arm is no cakewalk but she nails it. Her athletic physique, stance and cricketing shots are impeccable. Her showdown with coach Paddy and boyfriend Jeet (Angad Bedi) are the film’s most moving scenes. Saiyami breathes life into a role that didn't require her to wallow in self-pity and yet make her trauma seen. Shabana Azmi’s majestic presence and timing, is a treat to watch. Ghoomer is elevated by its performances but its soul lies in R. Balki, Rahul Sengupta and Rishi Virmani’s uplifting writing that makes you both teary-eyed and chuckle. “Woh leftie nahi left hi hai” says Paddy to Rasika describing Anina. Characters are refreshingly supportive, non-judgmental, unpretentious and good-hearted. The film struggles a bit towards the end. It gets a tad predictable and crowd pleasing (match portions) as the creative liberties get a bit excessive. Can India’s national cricket team give its much coveted spot to a one-armed spin bowler, who cannot bat or field properly? Is media attention and the equal opportunity stance of selectors enough to bend the rules? The artistic license is aplenty but Ghoomer consciously chooses magic, hope and second chances. Your mind takes a sudden jolt when thinking, "What happens when everything's taken away from you in a span of few minutes? "Kisisay koi cheez bewaja cheeni jaye, woh galat hai." You can tell how obsessed Abhishek, Saiyami and Balki are about cricket while watching this one.

Ghoomer Review

Ghoomer Review: Amid the huge craze of OMG 2 and Gadar 2, R Balki's Ghoomer has finally hit the theatres today (August 18). Featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Saiyami Kher, Shabana Azmi, and Angad Bedi, the film is a sports drama and its trailer received a positive response from moviegoers. Wondering how the movie is? Well, let's analyze it.

GHOOMER STORY REVIEW:

At the center of the narrative is Anina (Saiyami Kher), a promising cricketer who aspires to don the Indian jersey. Her dreams take a tragic turn when she loses her right hand in a devastating accident. As she grapples with despair and uncertainty, her journey intersects with Padam Singh Sodhi (Abhishek Bachchan), a former cricket champion. Director R. Balki skillfully navigates their path, weaving a tale of societal obstacles and personal battles, all underscored by his signature storytelling prowess.

Ghoomer is a remarkable sports drama that seamlessly blends heart-wrenching emotions with exhilarating entertainment. This film stands as a testament to the power of human resilience and determination in the face of daunting challenges.

GHOOMER ACTING REVIEW:

The performances in Ghoomer are commendable. Saiyami Kher's portrayal of Anina is a study in subtlety, gradually blossoming into a portrayal of unshakeable strength in the latter half. Abhishek Bachchan, as Padam Singh Sodhi, delivers a sincere and earnest performance, capturing the essence of his character's journey from start to finish. Angad Bedi, in his role, effectively contributes to the ensemble, while Shabana Azmi's portrayal of Anina's grandmother strikes a chord and resonates deeply with the audience.

The film's cinematography captures the highs and lows of the characters' lives, offering a visual tapestry that mirrors the emotional rollercoaster they ride. The sports sequences are engaging, and the film's pacing keeps viewers invested in the characters' growth and ultimate triumphs.

GHOOMER OVERALL VERDICT:

Ghoomer Movie Details

Ghoomer full story.

“Ghoomer” unfolds the tale of Anina, an ardent aspirant of the Indian National Women’s Cricket Team. However, her aspirations are shattered by a tragic accident that robs her of her right arm, radically altering her life’s course. Plunged into despair and grappling with thoughts of suicide, she finds a glimmer of hope in an unexpected source: Paddy, a once-failed cricketer now grappling with alcoholism. In this twist of fate, Anina’s journey takes an unforeseen turn, with Paddy emerging as her unlikely mentor and coach. Guided by his unconventional approach, Anina, previously a batter, transforms into a left-arm bowler, reigniting her dreams.

The directorial brilliance of Balki is at its peak, effortlessly establishing a profound connection between the characters and the audience. The collaborative writing of Balki, Rahul Sengupta, and Rishi Virmani injects robustness into the narrative, resulting in an uncomplicated yet impactful screenplay. At its core, the film champions the themes of ‘Self-belief’ and an unrelenting ‘Never Give Up’ attitude, leaving an indelible message. Vishal Sinha, the Director of Photography, presents a captivating visual panorama through his cinematic lens, while Amit Trivedi enriches the film with his musical compositions and evocative background score.

Ghoomer Movie Review

“Ghoomer” embraces noble intentions, aiming not for sympathy but empathy. While it strives to celebrate resilience over pity, its depth remains surface-level. The narrative relies heavily on suspension of disbelief, particularly in the climactic moments that prioritize Anina’s individual prowess over teamwork, missing the emotional resonance intended. The screenplay’s structure falters, juggling between the stadium’s fervent chants and Anina’s backstory, which disrupts immersion. Saiyami Kher’s portrayal showcases commitment and technical accuracy, yet her vulnerabilities feel underwhelming. Abhishek Bachchan shines as Paddy, infusing the role with humor and determination. Shabana Azmi and Amitabh Bachchan leave notable marks, though their characters’ trajectories vary. The music aptly complements the emotions. Despite Balki’s signature touches, weak writing, screenplay, and performances limit the film’s impact. “Ghoomer” earns 2.5 out of 5 stars, its admirable lineup unable to elevate the lacking top-order elements.

After Cheeni Kum, Paa & Shamitabh, Ghoomer is R Balki’s fourth venture with the Bachchan’s and it pretty much appears that the Balki-Bachchan combination proves to be a success formula. R Balki’s ‘Ghoomer’, is about Anina (Saiyami Kher), a batter inching towards a place in the National side; where Abhishek Bachchan (as Padam Singh Sodhi aka Paddy) takes centre stage in a role that defies conventions and expectations. The two are ably supported by Shabana Azmi (as Anina’s Dadi) and Angad Bedi (as Jeet, Anina’s childhood friend and love interest).

R Balki Reunites With Abhishek Bachchan

With Ghoomer, Balki has tried to fit in quite a few inspiring examples stitched into one in the form of a single narrative. There have been sports films in the past too featuring a guru-shishya model (Irudhi Suttru/Saala Khadoos, starring R Madhavan & Ritika Singh) with a very strict guru imparting training with his own ways so the shishya achieves what the guru could not or was unable to. But Ghoomer shines thanks to its unique writing.

‘ Ghoomer ‘ seems to be picked up from ‘ghoomar’ or ‘ghumar’, a traditional folk dance of Rajasthan. The word ‘ghoomna’ describes the twirling movement of the dancers and is the basis of the word ghoomar.

The ‘Ghoomer’ story

Ghoomer is about Anina, a promising batter who after a lot of hard work is finally selected for the National team. However, Paddy, who is an ex-test cricket player (bowler) ridicules Anina of not being the right choice for the team. This hurts Anina who leaves the team dinner with Jeet but meets with an accident, which results in her losing her right arm! Anina’s life is shattered and contemplates ending her life. That is when Paddy again steps into her (house) life and tells her that she can still play the next series against England but not as a batsman but a left-arm-spin bowler.

The happy-sad first half gets converted into a challenging second half that mostly features Paddy’s vague/ruthless ways of training Anina to excel as a bowler. Intermittently asking what she feels about her bowling, had she been facing her as a batter. Well, this guru-shishya drama plays out in the complete second half with the climax being a cricket match! With the finale made as critical as, you know that, I’m sure.

The writing of Ghoomer needs a special mention; the dialogues are written with a very different flavour and often with a pun or metaphor. Sample a couple of them that I could note, “Left hand needs to earn the ‘right’ to bowl”, also “Dekhne walon ke liye sports sirf khel hai, khelne walon ke liye sacrifice” and there are few more that one might notice if ‘enjoying’ with equal ‘seriousness’.

Abhishek Bachchan

Playing a coach, Abhishek’s versatility shines. Despite his character’s persona, Abhishek infuses the narrative with renewed energy, aiding Saiyami’s character development from a promising batter to an innovative left-arm-spinner. Abhishek Bachchan’s character is one that allows his performance to talk through his eyes. A gifted bowler, now haunted by his own past. Paddy is also grappling with a sense of being meaningless. He justifies his portrayal of a deeply flawed and tormented soul battling his inner demons, that also makes him a troubled drunkard. Jr. Bachchan goes on to deliver a performance that brings back memories with hints of Sr. Bachchan’s one of the most memorable roles and does complete justice to it without getting overboard.

There are moments that Abhishek Bachchan’s performance transforms into an enigmatic blend of darkness and wit. As the film moves towards the climax, Abhishek’s character takes on an unexpected transformation, seamlessly evolving into a refined coach. Every minute detail of this evolution is well written, and his on-screen persona resonates authenticity that is evident.

Saiyami Kher

Saiyami can be singled out as an actress who fits to ‘T’ playing a cricketer . The initial reels where Anina is shown batting is amazing with her postures, stance, attitude, everything that of a real sportsperson. From beaming with confidence on being selected to the Indian team to feeling shattered on losing not just her hand but her dream and then again standing tall as a left-arm-spin bowler in the Indian side, Saiyami’s transformation is brilliant. Her character makes you feel the pain with every shot and angle. It is also a perfect example of how with the right grit and determination, everything is possible. ‘Ghoomer’ might prove to be a gamechanger for her career.

Saiyami Kher _ Pic Courtesy Instagram

Shabana Azmi & Angad Bedi

Both these actors prove to be the most important support as actors and as characters too. Just recently we saw Shabana Azmi (in RARKPK) play someone who finds her love after decades to playing Anina’s dadi who is a cricket buff/enthusiast and an expert who keeps track and pushes Anina in her game. Ditto with Angad Bedi who has a small role but manages to play the part wholeheartedly. He becomes an able support to Saiyami’s character.

Overall Point of View

This is not a first of its kind cinema, we have enjoyed many of the underdog stories and cherished an equal number of them. Having said so, the narrative, the situations and the scenes stitched together in Ghoomer are applause worthy. Thankfully the makers have kept the story to the point without distracting with unnecessary romance, song & dance sequences. The story remains undiluted with a hint of humour thrown in with Jr. B.

The last and the most important being the climax with Amitabh Bachchan stepping in as a commentator, who emotes, reads poems, and excites the audience, all at the same time in those few minutes during the climax. R Balki’s ‘Ghoomer’ has a repeat value for all those who like cinema with some good performances and meaningful dialogues.

‘Ghoomer’ marks a milestone in Saiyami Kher and Abhishek Bachchan’s career, showcasing their remarkable journey to brilliance. It isn’t just a film; it’s a story that captures the moment, a cinematic experience into the world of cricket. It’s an expedition into the uncharted territories of human emotions, with Saiyami Kher proving to be the icing on the cake.

Ghoomer Movie Review: On the whole, GHOOMER rests on Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher’s performances and some wellexecuted scenes.

On the whole, ghoomer rests on abhishek bachchan and saiyami kher’s performances and some well-executed scenes. but the narrative is too quick and the trailer ended up showing nearly the whole story., ghoomer review {2.5/5} & review rating.

GHOOMER is the story of a physically challenged cricket player. Anina ( Saiyami Kher ) has always been interested in cricket since she was a child. She resides with her father (Shivendra Singh Dungarpur), grandmother (Shabana Azmi) and brothers Anuj (Piyush Raina) and Tishu (Akshay Joshi). She pursues the sport even while studying and gets shortlisted for the selection process for the Indian cricket team. While she’s on the crease, the session is interrupted by a drunken Padam Singh Sodhi aka Paddy ( Abhishek Bachchan ), a failed player. In a drunken state, he bowls to Anina and gets her out. He publicly concludes that she’s unfit to be selected. Anina, however, gets selected. At a celebratory dinner, Paddy lands up to get his share of alcohol. When he sees that Anina is one of the selected players, he insults her and the management that selected her. Anina bursts out crying and leaves. While returning home in her boyfriend Jeet’s (Angad Bedi) car, she meets with an accident. The doctors try their best but are not able to save her right arm. Anina, obviously, is shattered. The selection team looks for her replacement. Anina feels like a burden as she struggles to do normal chores after the amputation. On her birthday, Paddy meets her. He’s the only one who doesn’t take pity on her and advises her to become an expert bowler with her left hand. Anina rejects his proposal and blames him for her situation. Slowly, she warms up to this idea and begins her training under Paddy. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Movie Review: Ghoomer

R Balki's story (co-written by Rahul Sengupta and Rishi Virmani) is intriguing. It is inspired by Karoly Takacs, a Hungarian right-hand shooter, who won two Olympic Gold medals with his left hand after his right hand was seriously injured. R Balki's screenplay is different from the other sports films and peppered with very entertaining and dramatic scenes. However, a few developments are very quick and unconvincing. R Balki's dialogues are witty and sharp and are sure to raise laughs.

R Balki's direction is quite nice. While the first half is around 50 minutes long, the second half’s runtime is nearly 80 minutes. Yet, one doesn’t mind as a lot is happening in the film. The way he depicts Anina’s hardships after she goes through the amputation is moving. Her training scenes are gripping and very convincing. But what works very well are the scenes between Anina and Paddy. Some of the memorable scenes here are Anina and Paddy’s first meeting, Paddy humiliating Anina at the dinner, Paddy asking Anina to clear the bushes in his backyard and even cook food and Anina’s meeting with Paddy on Diwali.

On the flipside, the film is too quick at times. A few developments are convenient, especially in the cricket match in the climax. Paddy makes a shocking revelation to Anina but nothing much happens about it after this dramatic sequence. And the major problem with the film is that the trailer ended up showing too much of the story. An important plot point is also depicted in the promo. A lot of buildup happens in the film with regard to this development in the film. However, when it unveils on screen, it won’t surprise the audience as they have already seen it in the trailer.

Ghoomer | Official Trailer | Abhishek Bachchan, Saiyami, Shabana Azmi, Angad Bedi | R Balki

Speaking of performances, Abhishek Bachchan shines. He’s totally into his character and rocks the show. It won’t be wrong to say that this is one of his most accomplished performances. Saiyami Kher, too, gives her best. This is not an easy role at all and it’s evident that she’s given her blood and sweat in convincingly playing a cricketer. Shabana Azmi is adorable. Angad Bedi is decent as a supportive boyfriend. Piyush Raina and Akshay Joshi are wasted. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur is decent. Ivanka Das (Rasika) leaves a mark. Amitabh Bachchan adds to the starry presence. His character is cute; however, some of his dialogues are not audible. Others are good.

Amit Trivedi's music is well woven into the narrative but is not of chartbuster variety. The title song is the most memorable track of the lot.  'Dil Dum Chahalla', 'Taqdeer Se Taqraa'  and  'Purnaviram'  are soulful but don't get registered properly. Amit Trivedi's background score is much better.

Vishal Sinha's cinematography is weak in the car scene but overall, it’s appropriate. Sandeep Sharad Ravade's production design is memorable, especially Paddy’s house. Aesha Merchant's costumes are stylish yet realistic. Double Barrel Communications & VC Studiioz' VFX is great. The amputation looks quite real. Special mention should also go to Dhruv P Panjuani's sports direction. Nipun Ashok Gupta's editing is too quick in some scenes.

On the whole, GHOOMER rests on Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher’s performances and some well-executed scenes. But the narrative is too quick and the trailer ended up showing nearly the whole story. Moreover, at the box office, it will face a tough time since last week’s releases, GADAR 2 and OMG 2, continue to remain super-strong.

'Ghoomer' movie review: One tip, one hand!

Film: Ghoomer  U/A: Sports drama Dir: R Balki  CAST: Saiyami Kher, Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi Rating: 3/5

Here’s the thing I appreciate about movies, where the unanticipated turning point in a character’s life takes place so casually, you don’t see it coming. It goes with my non-theory about life itself. Which is simply that life is so random, we shouldn’t ever be taking theories on it seriously!

Consider that pivotal scene in October (2018), for instance, where the lead character randomly slips off the ledge of a terrace, and that altogether changes the course of her life, and Shoojit Sircar’s beautiful film.

Likewise, the protagonist in Ghoomer’s got the whole world, and cricket-bat, in her hand. Until she randomly sticks the latter out of a moving car, for a quick sec—something parents have always warned kids against. That’s it. She’ll never be the same again. Starting with loss of limb, therefore loss of the sport she loves and lives for.

Saiyami Kher (Mirzya, Choked) plays this cricketer, primed to play professionally for India. She’s a world-class batter, set to circumvent the usual selection process, i.e. a stint in domestic cricket.

Film archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, himself the nephew of cricket administrator, Raj Singh Dungarpur, plays Saiyami’s father in the film. Angad Bedi, again, son of arguably the world’s best left-arm spinner, Bishan Singh Bedi, plays Saiyami’s boyfriend. This is just two reasons to state the filmmakers, even if it’s through access to second-hand knowledge, certainly know their cricket.

And they pull off a plot that, in fact, is inconceivable, as per mid-day’s in-house cricket expert, Clayton Murzello. That is, a girl with one hand (the other non-existent), aspiring for a spot in the national team. Obviously then, you can’t bat.

So, that’s a full handicap for a team of 11, for one. The filmmakers summarily cite BS Chandrashekhar as an example—who, by the way, held the dubious record for scoring fewer runs than wickets taken, in Test cricket (plus 23 ducks)! They kept Chandrashekhar in the team for his bowling alone, didn’t they? They did. Also, there is mention of Tiger Pataudi, who captained India, with one eye, didn’t he? Not the same thing.

That said, the other characters seem to swallow the film’s incredulous proposition, with hardly a pinch of salt. This is the only drawback in the picture, in that regard. As for the audience, analysing a leap of faith too much, only disfigures the beauty of fiction, which is like God—you either believe, or you don’t.

In this case, you do. Ghoomer is a film on cricket that, as a national religion, I’m agnostic towards. Given the story’s got a further spin to it, only makes it more interesting, hence—over the usual, super-predictable sports biopics, especially with ladies in the lead, that we’ve suffered, lately; the likes of Shabaash Mithu (2022; on Mithali Raj), Saina (2021; on Saina Nehwal), to quickly trash a couple!

On the face of it, Ghoomer is also a dark tragedy, isn’t it? And this is where you gotta thank the writer-director R Balki’s trademarked lightness of touch, in dealing with a subject so grim, with soft advertising-photography, and a peculiarly gallows humour, he thrives on (Paa, Shamitabh)—to sail you through scenes, songs, even making jokes on disabilities or suicide, along the way.

So, you’re in it, not for virtue-signalling/sympathy alone. You’re inherently enjoying a film. Which isn’t to suggest the time-tested tropes of sports movies—always about supreme sacrifice, before eventual success of the underdog—don’t exist. They’re inevitable/inescapable. Mercifully, we’re spared the shot of the protagonist training on tyres since Rocky (1976)!

Still, there are enough boxes ticked, to a point that certain stretched portions, before the finale (third act), or even the climax, feel like deliberate déjà vu. Chuck Chak De India (2007), for a moment—this is also a Balki movie, which has its own checklist.

To start with, Amitabh Bachchan, in some form, on/off the screen. Bachchan makes it to the commentary box in a cameo, as himself. In a way, that Bachchan had a pop-culture reference, as himself, in a movie (Badla), where he was already playing a role! His son, Abhishek Bachchan, here, is the male lead.

The part that Big B would’ve played, straight off the bat, in Ghoomer, is of the crabby, old, haggard, alcoholic, ex, failed, Test cricketer, who takes it upon himself to coach the female protagonist, to a glory he couldn’t once achieve.

That’s Abhishek in the film—convincingly channelling his inner Bachchan, if you may! Also, the actor, in the current phase of his career, with A for a middle name, expanding his repertoire, with roles that couldn’t be more unlike the last (Dasvi, Bob Biswas, The Big Bull).

It’s the pitch-perfect Saiyami, however, in the middle, on the crease—in a part that couldn’t literally be any more physically challenging, if you’ll ignore the pun. I don’t know her athletic antecedents.  Her cricket must match the best—even if her bowling will cleverly baffle, like Kachra’s, from Lagaan (2001)!

What else do I love about sports movies? Ironically, life’s lessons in them. They work, if absorbed as entertainment. My favourite here? As with batting, there is partnership in bowling too: “Kabhi kabhi wicket jo girta hai, woh pichhle over ke dhakke ki wajah se girta hai (Sometimes, a wicket falls, because of a push from a previous bowler’s over)!”

The reverse, I suspect, is true for movies in theatres. Sometimes, people go to watch a film, because of the one before, that’s already lured them in! As we speak, there’s post-pandemic cheer at the cinemas (‘Barbenheimer’, ‘Rocky-Rani’, ‘Oh My Gadar’…). Wishing this well too.

Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout Movie Review: Good Performances Mark Average Thriller

A detective and his team investigate a shootout in a pub and a complex web of crime is unravelled.

movie review ghoomar bollywood

Star Cast: Manoj Bajpayee , Prachi Desai, Parul Gulati, Sahil Vaid, Vaquar Shaikh, Ankit Bhardwaj, Dinker Sharma, Shruti Bapna, Surbhi Rohra

Director: Aban Bharucha Deohans

movie review ghoomar bollywood

What’s Good: The procedural part of a crime investigation is deftly shown. This includes how the police correlate observation and thought with evidence and forensic angles. The performances are more than competent and there is a tangible atmosphere in most of the film. I also liked the unexpected turns that come at periodic intervals and the way the villain’s unrepentant character is presented.

What’s Bad: The script not only meanders in places but, more importantly, incorporates silly gaffes and flaws that could have been completely eliminated by some basic thinking. The post-climactic sequence where the cops are discussing the case jars as everyone in the team are in a cheerful mode, which is insensitive and totally at variance with the seriousness of the case they have just solved.

Loo Break: Not really.

Watch or Not?: If you are a Silence fan (yes, there was a previous film with the same investigative officers) or a hardcore whodunit or investigative thriller fan, yes.

Language: Hindi (with more than a smattering of English!)

Available On: ZEE5

Runtime: 142 Minutes

The title Silence 2 is eminently unsuitable and irrelevant to the story, while The Night Own Bar Shootout would have been an ideal one instead, even if the name could have been simplified and made more relatable to the Indian audience.

Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout Movie Review: Script Analysis

ACP Avinash Verma heads a Special Crime Unit (SCU), which is under the scanner as the powers above are wondering if it is useful or superfluous. Fresh from their last case, his unit is now sent to investigate a shootout in a Mumbai pub where multiple random people have been shot dead, including a politician’s PA.

There is pressure on the police commissioner (Manuj Bhaskar) by the politician, but a preliminary investigation with some forensic angles confirm that the arbitrary firing was to distract the cops from the main victim, a girl named Aazma Khan (Surbhi Rohra), who was an escort. The PA has nothing to do with the shootout.

As the investigation proceeds, Avinash and his team get some lucky breaks as well. Avinash’s colleague from Jaipur, Jaya Rawal (Shruti Bapna) calls him up for advice on a case in her town, and soon, by one of those coincidences that can only happen in Hindi films, a photograph of a dead woman that she sends to Avinash also surfaces in the Mumbai investigation!

A tangled tale emerges that includes a kinky foreigner, the flesh trade and human trafficking, a close friend of the late Aazma, Rizwan (Chetan Sharma), who is not all he claims to be, and her rich client, Rajeev (Padam Bhola) who is scared of his art collector wife (Parul Gulati).

En route, the script makes several gaffes, like the absurd question “Yeh kaam kiska hai (Whose work is this?)”, a line said by a character that is totally senseless in the context, but I will not give a spoiler here, cops searching for evidence without wearing gloves, and minor girls who have been rescued from the flesh trade crowding around a woman who is narrating not-so-palatable facts to the police that should have been revealed in the girls’ absence.

A very glaring flaw is the commissioner keeping on giving Avinash deadlines like “You have two days” and “You have three days” to prevent the disbanding of the SCU. Later, he tells Avinash that he can only afford to send two police officers (including Avinash) to investigate in Jaipur and they have “to manage their accommodation”(!!). But Avinash lands there with two colleagues, Sanjana ( Prachi Desai ) and Raj (Vaqaur Shaikh)!

As said before, all these were entirely preventable flaws and just mitigate the impact of a tight police procedural thriller.

Last but not the least, the title Silence 2 is eminently unsuitable and irrelevant to the story, while The Night Own Bar Shootout would have been an ideal one instead, even if the name could have been simplified and made more relatable to the Indian audience.

Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout Movie Review: Star Performance

Manoj Bajpayee has now mastered the art of underplaying roles and etches a sober yet ingenious detective well. His fans will love his performance, though to be strictly objective, there is nothing really distinguished or distinctive in his acting, apart from it being a reprise of a similar turn in the first Silence.

His team is well-enacted, with Prachi Desai giving a likeable impression as Sanjana, Sahil Vaid scoring as Amit, Vaquar Shaikh as Raj and Nimesh Balaji Shinde as Javed. Manuj Bhaskar has an erratic character but Shruti Bapna as Jaya is impactful.

The actors who actually score high are Dinker Sharma, who puts in a scene-stealing turn as Arjun Chauhan, Chetan Sharma as Rizwan, Surbhi Rohra as Aazma, Parul Gulati as the weird Aarti Singh, Padam Bhola as her husband Rajeev Singh and Neena Kulkarni in a sweet cameo as Amisha (Ishika Mandeep Gagneja)’s helpless grandmother. Amisha is a small but key character in the plot and Ishika makes a great impact in a role less than five minutes long.

movie review ghoomar bollywood

Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout Movie Review: Direction, Music

Aban Bharucha Deohans directs this sequel too (like Silence: Can You Hear It?) and needs to whet his script nuances better to score high. His craftsmanship is generally good as the plot explores multiple aspects of crime and his predilection for the unexpected is quite novel. However, all I want to ask here is whether a gay angle was really necessary yet (any number of ‘yets’!) again on an OTT product?

movie review ghoomar bollywood

The score by Gaurava Godkhindi remains unobtrusive (as background music must be) but there is a needless song that comes in precisely for a few seconds, which was so unnecessary, all told.

Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout Movie Review: The Last Word

As things stand, this is average fare, very likeable in parts, not very tight in other sections as thrillers should be, but a one-time visit would do no harm, as one does not have to leave home for this! Besides, if I have watched far better thrillers, I have also experienced many worse ones!

Two and a half stars!

movie review ghoomar bollywood

Manoj Bajpayee

Release Date: 16 Apr, 2024

Manoj Bajpayee and Prachi Desai-starrer ‘Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout’ isn’t a film with just a long title. With close to 2 hours and 40 minute run-time, the film also veers towards being a dud show with very melodramatic treatment. At the centre of it is ACP Avinash Verma (played by Bajpayee), who reiterates how Amitabh Bachchan says ‘No means no’ in Pink before beating up goons and can play out murder scenes with his vivid imagination.

He is a poet at heart who simply delivers philosophical lines in the middle of an investigation, ponders often and quotes Ghalib. This man, along with his team, is out to catch a killer, who has murdered 10 people in a bar. However, thanks to the hunch that ACP Verma has, he finds out that there is a deeper racket involved.

(SPOILERS AHEAD)

The racket that we are speaking about is a human trafficking racket. With a slow start, the story slowly progresses towards finding the culprit, not just behind the shootout but also the one operating the racket.

At the centre of it is a mad artist, Arjun Chauhan. He is shown as an elusive character who only a few have met. The mystery unfolds, little by little, over the next 160 minutes. While the film picks up pace, it is very sporadic. The pace keeps being unsteady, and the melodramatic treatment does not help the case.

(SPOILERS END)

What is worse is the climax and the revelation of the criminal. What follows is the motive provided. Thanks to the final sequence, it looks like the audience has very successfully wasted their time.

Aban Bharucha Deohans has written and directed ‘Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout’. The writing could have been much crisper, especially at times when very craftily-made crime thrillers are aplenty. Even as a director, he loses his reign over the film quite a few times. The execution does not help.

Manoj Bajpayee’s ACP Verma feels like Srikanth Tiwari with less quirk. The actor tries to incorporate the swag that he has in the Raj and DK show, but keeps stuck in philosophy. The lines given just make the character farcical at times. He tries to play ACP Verma with sincerity, but the script does not do justice.

Prachi Desai is a wasted opportunity here. The actor, who has spark and talent, doesn’t have much to showcase in the film. It also makes us wonder why makers are not doing justice to her.

There seems to be a poor parody running throughout with dialogues like ‘ kuch toh gadbad hai ’ (something is wrong), reminiscent of ACP Pradyuman from CID or ‘ iss khel ka nirdeshak Arjun Chauhan hai par iss drame ka antim scene hum likhenge ’ (Arjun Chauhan might be the director of the game, but I will write the last scene). There’s also, ‘her life was interrupted by death’ at a very serious point. So, you get the drift of how the film gets unintentionally funny.
