About the Book

In this remarkable collection of essays, Michael Burawoy develops the extended case method by connecting his own experiences among workers of the world to the great transformations of the twentieth century—the rise and fall of the Soviet Union and its satellites, the reconstruction of U.S. capitalism, and the African transition to post-colonialism in Zambia. Burawoy's odyssey began in 1968 in the Zambian copper mines and proceeded to Chicago's South Side, where he worked as a machine operator and enjoyed a unique perspective on the stability of advanced capitalism. In the 1980s, this perspective was deepened by contrast with his work in diverse Hungarian factories. Surprised by the collapse of socialism in Hungary in 1989, he journeyed in 1991 to the Soviet Union, which by the end of the year had unexpectedly dissolved. He then spent the next decade studying how the working class survived the catastrophic collapse of the Soviet economy. These essays, presented with a perspective that has benefited from time and rich experience, offer ethnographers a theory and a method for developing novel understandings of epochal change.

Review, The Extended Case Method 2 Practical Matters Despite the book's ambitious scope, Burawoy's central concern in this volume is the craft of ethnography: what it is, why we need it, how to do it, and how we ought to think about it. He de-fines ethnography broadly as a method of social research committed to "studying others in their

  4. The extended case method in nursing research: Unpacking the 'what

The extended case method emphasizes the use of a theory and focuses on discovering how underlying structures at the micro level are affected by broader social forces. This makes it a useful approach to examine how macro level theories affect vulnerable, marginalized persons, which makes it particularly useful to the discipline of nursing.

  5. 'We Begin with Our Favorite Theory': Reconstructing the Extended Case

the extended case method. What needs reconstructing is the extended case method's implicit theory of the relation between culture and structure. To begin this reconstruction, we outline three different ways that cultural research con-ceives of connections between culture and structure. First, culture and social structure interpenetrate.

  9. Review of Michael Burawoy's 'The Extended Case Method'

The Extended Case Method (2009). These research experiences underpin Burawoy's commitment to scholarly engagement with a wider world outside the confines of the university, to his rejection of what the French sociologist and activist Pierre Bourdieu calls 'scholastic enclosure' or a remote and detached academic elitism.
