Dogs are excellent pet animals, as their popularity, rivaled only by cats, shows. Pack animals by nature, they are open to including members of other species into their groups and get along well with most people and animals.

They can also learn a variety of other behaviors and tricks, such as not relieving themselves in the house and executing complex routines. This physical and mental capacity to perform a variety of tasks marks dogs as humanity’s best and most versatile helpers.

The variety of jobs dogs perform has led humans to try to develop distinct dog breeds for each occupation, which led to the emergence of numerous and different varieties of the same animal.

8 Writing Prompts for Essays About Dogs

Did you know dogs are domesticated wolves ? If you plan to write a fun and engaging essay, look for amusing dog facts that many are unaware of. You can focus on one breed or discuss dogs in general. First, share the dog’s history, characteristics, and unique behaviors. Then, search for common dog myths and correct them.

If this sounds like a lot of work, do a 5 paragraph essay instead.

It has been proven that dogs are excellent for human well-being. They make people happy and comfort their owners whenever they’re sad. However, dog ownership is not just rainbows and sunshine.

For this prompt, consider the benefits and drawbacks of adopting a dog. In the conclusion, give your own opinion on whether people should have dogs or not. Add your reasons; this could be the cost, aggressive dog breeds, or allergies.

Christmas Vacation

There are many dog breeds today. Pick the most popular ones and include why they are the ones usually seen, bought, or adopted. Write their characteristics and behaviors to help your readers learn about the similarities and differences between each dog. Use pet articles, scientific research, or other reliable sources to make your essay more credible.

You can also tackle the issue of dog crossbreeding , which can lead to genetic mutations.

Dogs need a place to sleep, training, grooming essentials, and other supplies besides the basics, such as food and water. These additional and continuous expenses hinder others from adopting dogs. Use this prompt to share factors that will help you decide whether to pursue adoption. Then, identify dog essentials and items and offer cheaper alternatives to save money.

The average lifespan of a dog is 10 to 13 years , which is much shorter than humans. This means humans usually outlive their canine companions. In this prompt, you can teach the readers how to calculate the lifespan of their dogs based on size and type. Then, advise the dog owners how they can make their dog’s stay on Earth worth it. For an interesting piece of writing, look for a story of a dog outliving its owner and how it reacted or lived out its remaining days, and include this in your essay.

Many households believe dogs symbolize protection and love. Society also adjusted to accommodate dogs with animal laws and dog parks. Further explain how interwoven dogs and the community are, that they’re now a necessary part of some people’s lives. For example, having a dog can make someone more sociable by setting a play date with other dogs and interacting with the other fur parents.

Use this prompt to share your first dog ownership experience with your readers. First, introduce your dog and how you got it. Next, describe your first dog’s unique qualities and add your unforgettable memories together.  End your essay with the greatest life lesson your dog taught you that you still practice today.

Aside from helping their owners have a more active lifestyle, dogs also improve mental health. For this prompt, focus on therapy dogs. Discuss what they offer, including their therapeutic effects on their owners. Then, identify who needs them the most. Add the best breeds for therapy dogs and why.

Essay on My Pet Dog for Students and Children

my pet slime book 1 Book

500+ Words Essay on My Pet Dog

Pets are a great blessing in anyone’s life. They are the only ones who love us unconditionally. Pets always offer us everything they have without asking for anything in return. The main aim of any pet’s life is to make their owner happy. Nowadays, even the term ‘owner’ is changing. People prefer their pets as kids and to themselves as parents. This is how the relationship between pets is evolving. People treat them no less than humans. For instance, they celebrate their birthdays; get those matching outfits and more.

In my opinion, I feel the pets rightly deserve it. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is dogs. A man’s best friend and the most faithful animal, a dog. I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

Sasha – My Pet Dog

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Essay on My Pet Dog

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

As and when Sasha grew up, he learned various tricks. We trained him to follow our instructions and he even learned a few tricks. We loved showing him off to our colony friends and relatives. I always took Sasha out with me as he loved taking a walk on the road.

Furthermore, my siblings and I took on the responsibility of keeping Sasha clean. Every week, we took turns to bathe him and brush him nicely. I remember I even got a bow for him from my pocket money. Sasha loved it and wagged his tail in excitement. Sasha has been with us through thick and thin and we will forever be indebted to him for his loyalty.

A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

Certainly, Sasha made us better human beings. We are now more compassionate towards animals. There was one instance where the stray dogs were going to harm a kitten, and to our surprise, Sasha saved that little kitten and got her home.

In other words, we have learned a lot of things from Sasha. He protected us when we slept at night. He tried to cheer us up whenever anyone of us was sad. Sasha’s obedience inspired me a lot to be kind to my parents. Therefore, all the credit for changing our lives goes to Sasha.

All of us decided to go somewhere to hang out, leaving Tuffy home. As we started the car, Tuffy started running behind our car and got hurt. Since we heard the sound of something getting hit by the car, we all stepped down to see what it was. As soon as Tina saw it was Tuffy and he got hurt, she started crying. Tuffy had started bleeding a little and had to be taken to the doctor. However, Tina kept crying the whole evening, and our outing plan was also cancelled. Dog-Man’s Best Friend

This real-life story shows how dogs never give up on their masters. Once, a dog was adopted by an old man named Jammy. Jammy was quite old and used to live alone. To eradicate his loneliness, he adopted a dog and named him Tommy. Jammy used to spend all his time with Tommy – feeding him, playing with him, taking care of him, and nurturing him. As time passed, Tommy and Jammy became inseparable. But Jammy was getting older and unhealthier. One day Jammy did not wake up in the morning. He had died of cardiac arrest. Tommy couldn’t take his master's death, and when Jammy was being cremated, Tommy jumped into his funeral pyre and died. This story is a perfect example of how loyal and perfect friends dogs are.

What is Expository Essay?

An expository essay is a type of academic writing that is used to explain something or describe it in detail. It's often written in a more academic tone and style.

So how would you write an expository essay about our good companions?

The purpose of an expository essay about dogs is to provide facts and information about the topic. It should be well-researched with reliable sources and organized in a logical way.

For example, when writing about a specific dog breed, you mention information about their behavior, history, and characteristics.

Now that you have some ideas for what to write about, let’s move on to the writing steps.

Steps For Writing an Expository Essay About Dogs

Writing an essay about dogs can be a fun experience – but only if you have clear and structured steps.

Here is a step-by-step guide for writing a good essay about dogs

Step 1 – Choose a Topic

Choosing the right topic for your essay is an important first step. You know your topic should be related to dogs, but that’s not enough to choose a good topic. Here are some tips to help you out:

  • It’s best to pick a topic that isn’t too broad or narrow. For example, you could write about a specific breed of dog, dog training techniques, the history of dogs in art, or the role of dogs in therapy.
  • Moreover, choose a topic that is interesting and unique. This can make your essay stand out and pique the reader's interest.
  • Make sure you have enough information and research material available on the subject. Having access to credible sources and reference materials is essential for supporting your arguments and claims.

Step 2 – Do Research

Researching your topic is an essential step toward making your essay credible. You can use books, online resources, articles, and other materials for reference. Gather facts, statistics, and opinions from reliable sources to back up your essay’s claims.

Moreover, make sure to cite all the sources accurately in your essay.

Step 3 – Write an Outline

Once you are done with research, the next step is to write an expository essay outline . An essay outline helps you organize your thoughts and makes writing easier. It also helps you stay on track and makes sure all the information is in a logical order.

Here is how to make an outline:

Step 4 – Start Writing Your First Draft

Now comes the fun part – writing!

Start with an attention-grabbing essay introduction and provide a brief overview of the topic. For example, you could start by talking about how dogs are one of the most popular pets in the world.

Then go on to explain your points and back them up with evidence from reliable sources. Each paragraph should be focused on only one main point.

In addition, make sure each body paragraph links to the next one through transition words and that they all support your main argument.

Finally, end your essay with a conclusion that neatly wraps up the points you made in the body of your essay.

Step 5 – Proofread and Edit

Proofreading and editing are essential parts of the essay-writing process. Take your time to go over your essay and make sure it’s free from any mistakes. Check the grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.

Also, look for any factual inaccuracies or areas that can be improved upon. Revise and rewrite until you are happy with the final product.

These are the steps for writing a good essay about dogs. With these guidelines in mind, you can write an impressive essay that will get you high grades.

We should never think of this relationship as one-sided; it is mutual. If we call human beings the “giver” and dogs as the “taker”, then we are not doing full justice to this lovely relationship. Essay on Dog

Why Should Humans Pet Dog?

Are you too bored of human beings? Jokes aside, it is very natural to get fed up with the constant exposure to human relations and all the mental and physical expectations surrounding living life in a society. In this regard, pets can be great pals to people as well as offer them a support system unlike any other:

The companionship: Pets, especially dogs, can be great friends through thick and thin. Sometimes we don’t want anyone constantly talking and understanding us. We don’t want to go out and chill with friends every time we feel low. The feeling of being there with us in our comfortable environment can sometimes seal the greatest wounds.

Get a Routine : Stick with a dog and get a wonderful routine in your life. This routine involves taking care of your pet dog, taking him for a walk, feeding him food when he’s hungry, and much more. Basically, it is all about taking care of your pet dog like a parent. With time, you will feel more responsible and connected to him.

A Healthier Lifestyle : Your pet dog can’t go on a walk on its own. You will have to take him out and get him in. This means you might never go on a walk for the sake of your own health but with a pet dog with you as a companion, you will be more willing to do the hard work and seek out the fresh air with your furry friend.

Better Mental Health : It is scientifically proven that having a pet can reduce a lot of stress from life. The reason behind it is simple: love. All we need is love and the feeling of being with someone in our lives and dogs are the best to reflect these feelings. Being with a pet dog takes away the feeling of loneliness and gives you a chance to be just yourself.

Importance of Dogs

Nurturing and Life Experience

Having a pet dog is a life experience. Those who haven’t been in this position will never understand this gush of emotions associated with looking after another being. You nurture your dog in all ways possible. You feed him food, give him shelter and shower him with love and care.

You’re brought along for the journey they take in life and you are responsible for their well-being and happiness as well. This creates a bond for life between you and your dog and gives you the chance to learn and appreciate the beauty of this relationship, which might be shorter than most other human relationships one might have as one grows older.

While you nurture him by fulfilling all his needs, there is something you get back. Except for the constant companionship and support, you get back protection and security. Your pet dogs can be trusted guards for your homes.

Suppose it is late night and you are asleep, a stranger’s intrusion into your house might not get noticed by you, but your dog will instantly alarm you with a bark. Dogs are naturally protective of their owners and this has been proven time and again with various humans being saved, not just against robbers or criminals, but even in the case of fires and mishaps which the human might not realize and be aware but a dog might.

Rearing a Life

Giving a home to a pet means a lot. It is a lot more than you can ever think of. Always remember, you are saving a life. Not only this, but you are giving the best you can to save animals and life. With terrible spaces like dog pounds existing, having a pet dog ensures that you’re offering a safe and comfortable space for the animal to live in peace.

So, it is easy to understand now why having a pet dog is one of the greatest joys one can have. Dogs are loving creatures and having them around as a pet is something that helps humans grow as loving creatures themselves. Always remember: adopt, don’t shop!

Some have long, floppy ears while others have short, stubby ones. Some dogs are gentle and friendly while some others can be fierce and dangerous.

Dogs have sharp eyes and a heightened sense of smell and hearing. They can hear sounds of extremely high frequencies which are beyond the range of human hearing. Dogs are omnivorous and can eat rice, meat, eggs and some vegetables. In the beginning, dogs were domesticated to serve the hunting-gathering people as hunting dogs and guard dogs. With time, people started to breed dogs for a variety of purposes. Today, dogs serve us as shepherd dogs, guard dogs, police dogs, detection dogs, service dogs and even emotional support dogs.

Many people keep dogs as pets and even love and treat them as family members. Dogs like the company of humans and wag their tails when they are happy. They bark when they sense danger and can bite intruders and attackers to protect themselves and their owners. Because of their loyalty, dogs are also known as “man’s best friend”.

However, there are many people who abuse dogs and abandon them. Many dogs end up in dog shelters, injured, starved and homeless. There are also millions of stray dogs on the streets around the world who lead miserable lives. We need to be kind towards them and all other animals. We should take care of them and stop others from hurting them as well.

Some dog breeders also breed dogs for aesthetics without caring about the animal’s health and well-being. This results in many dogs developing breathing issues, spine issues and many other health problems. One should stop such acts and only breed dogs ethically. Dogs are faithful animals. They love us selflessly and we should love them as well.

Essay on My Pet in 150 words

I have a pet dog and his name is Chandler. He is named after my favourite “ Friends ” character and has been with us for the last nine months. His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. Chandler knows everybody in our family and whenever he sees a new person, he barks at them, but he is sweet and does not bite anyone. He is very intelligent as well and gives us handshakes with his paws. He understands whatever we tell, and on command, he sits and rolls over too. He is an essential part of our family and we all love him very much.

Essay on My Pet in 250 words

My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. She treats him just like the way she treats us.

My sister is particular about his timely vaccinations, eating habits, cleanliness, etc. She bathes him twice a week and every evening, we take him out for a stroll in the neighbourhood as well as the park. As mentioned before, Cheddar is quite active. Hence, we play with him in the park a lot. We throw a ball or a frisbee and play a game of fetch with him. He likes to roll in the leaves and it is fun to watch him do so. Along with being active, Cheddar is smart as well. At home, when his food is served, as long as we don’t say the word “go” he patiently waits. On command, he jumps and shakes hands with us using his paw. When told, he can roll over too. He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

Essay on My Pet in 300 words

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc.

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table.

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a stroll in the park, every shared moment is a treasure that adds richness to my life.

Both cats and dogs make wonderful pets, each offering unique qualities that appeal to different people. Cats are generally more independent animals. Dogs are social animals that thrive on companionship. They usually need more attention, exercise, and social interaction.

Dogs are known as the best friends of humans because they bring loyalty, joyous moments, unconditional love and life-teaching lessons. Some of the best dog breeds for domestication are German Shepherd, Siberian Huskey, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Beagle and Boxer.

Here is a good video I made about how to describe a dog in writing:

How to Describe a Dog Walking

Describing a dog walking can be a captivating and amusing experience, as dogs have a wide variety of walking styles that can depict their mood, breed, and personality.

It’s essential to focus on the dog’s movement, pace, posture, and where its attention is directed.

Describing the Movement

Dogs do not just walk; they strut, amble, trot, or even prance, depending on their mood and the situation.

A dog might saunter casually when it’s relaxed or stride purposefully when on a mission.

Consider how the dog’s body moves. Is its tail wagging, held high, or tucked between its legs?

Are the movements fluid and graceful, or awkward and clumsy?

Describing the Pace

The pace at which a dog walks can say a lot about its mindset.

Is it meandering leisurely, taking in all the scents, or is it rushing ahead, full of energy and excitement? A slow pace might suggest a dog that’s tired, older, or perhaps one that’s reluctant to go where it’s being led.

A brisk pace could indicate eagerness or excitement.

Describing the Posture

A dog’s posture during its walk can speak volumes about its confidence and health.

A dog that walks with its head and tail up is likely feeling happy and confident. A dog that slinks with its tail between its legs could be frightened or feeling insecure.

A hunched posture could suggest a dog is unwell.

Describing Attention Direction

Where a dog’s attention is focused while walking can help describe the scene.

Is the dog scanning its surroundings, sniffing the ground, looking up at its owner, or watching other dogs or people?

Here are some short examples:

  • “The Labrador Retriever strutted confidently across the park, tail wagging and nose in the air, taking in all the exciting new scents.”
  • “The old Beagle ambled slowly , sniffing every bush and tree trunk, soaking in all the smells.”
  • “The German Shepherd trotted briskly , head high and ears perked, alert to every movement around it.”
  • “The tiny Chihuahua pranced daintily along the sidewalk, pausing every few steps to glance up at its owner for reassurance.”

How to Describe a Dog Barking

Describing a dog barking can be a captivating way to bring energy and emotion into your writing.

It’s essential to focus on the sound, volume, rhythm, and context of the dog’s bark.

Describing the Sound

Different dogs bark in different ways. This can change based on the type of dog, how big it is, and how it’s feeling.

Some dogs have a high-pitched yip, others have a low, menacing growl, while some have a hearty, resonant bark. Using words that convey sound can help your readers “hear” the bark in their minds.

Describing the Volume

The volume of a dog’s bark can add intensity and emotion to your scene.

A soft, almost whispered bark might suggest uncertainty or fear, while a loud, booming bark could indicate a warning or show of dominance.

Describing the Rhythm

The rhythm or pattern of a dog’s bark can convey a lot about what it’s feeling or trying to communicate.

Is the bark continuous, like an alarm bell? Or is it sporadic and playful, like during a game of fetch?

Describing the Context

Remember to describe the situation in which the dog is barking.

Is it barking at a squirrel in a tree, an intruder at the door, or out of sheer excitement when its owner comes home? The context can help the reader understand the dog’s behavior.

  • “The German Shepherd’s bark was deep and resonant , echoing across the vast yard as it spotted an intruder.”
  • “The Chihuahua’s yip was high-pitched , a constant, frantic sound whenever the doorbell rang.”
  • “The Beagle’s bark was hearty and rhythmic , punctuating the quiet afternoon as it spotted a squirrel in the garden.”
  • “The Golden Retriever’s bark was loud and joyous , a booming sound of welcome when its owner returned home.”

By focusing on the sound, volume, rhythm, and context, you can provide a vivid description of a dog barking that brings your story to life.

How to Describe a Dog’s Smell in Writing

Describing a dog’s smell can provide an immersive, sensory detail that makes your writing more engaging. It’s important to focus on the type of smell, intensity, and source of the smell.

Describing the Type of Smell

A dog’s smell can range from pleasant to pungent depending on numerous factors.

Some dogs may carry the fresh scent of their shampoo, others the earthy smell of dirt from a playful afternoon in the park, while some can have the strong, musky odor that’s uniquely canine.

Choosing the right adjectives to describe these scents will paint a clearer picture in your reader’s mind.

Describing the Intensity

The intensity of a dog’s smell can speak volumes about its recent activities or general hygiene.

A faint smell might suggest a recently bathed and groomed dog, while a strong, potent odor could indicate a dog that’s spent hours outdoors or has been neglecting its grooming routine.

Describing the Source

Consider the source of the smell.

Does the smell come from the dog’s fur, its breath, or perhaps a specific part of its body like the paws or ears?

Each source can produce a distinct odor, and specifying this can help in creating a more vivid description.

  • “The Golden Retriever’s scent was a comforting mixture of its recent bath and the familiar, musky odor that was distinctly doggy .”
  • “The Bulldog had a strong, earthy smell , a testament to its afternoon digging in the garden.”
  • “The Cocker Spaniel had a faint, sweet smell , a mixture of its strawberry-scented shampoo and its soft, clean fur.”
  • “The Dachshund’s smell was potent , the sour odor of its breath a clear sign it had been into the trash again.”

How to Describe a Dog Running

Describing a dog running can bring vibrancy and excitement into your writing.

It’s essential to focus on the dog’s speed, style of running, body movements, and the purpose behind its run.

Describing the Speed

The speed at which a dog runs can say a lot about its mood, breed, and health.

A dog may sprint like the wind when chasing a ball or trot at a leisurely pace when exploring a new area.

Noticing whether the run is slow and calculated, or fast and frenzied can add depth to your description.

Describing the Style of Running

Every dog has its own style of running. Some dogs run with a light, bouncy gait, while others might run with a strong, determined stride.

Smaller dogs might scamper or scurry, while larger dogs might lope or bound.

The style of running can be indicative of the dog’s breed, size, and personality.

Describing Body Movements

Focus on the dog’s body movements while it’s running.

Is its tail held high, streaming out behind like a flag, or is it tucked close to its body?

Do its ears flap in the wind, or are they pinned back against its head? Such details can bring your description to life.

Describing the Purpose

Describe the purpose or reason behind the dog’s run.

Is it running after a squirrel, towards its owner, or is it simply running out of sheer joy? The context will help readers understand the scene better.

  • “The Greyhound sprinted with a determined, almost mechanical gait , its body a blur of sleek muscle and raw speed as it chased the rabbit.”
  • “The Bulldog lumbered slowly, its run more of a waddle , its small legs working overtime to keep up with its friends.”
  • “The Golden Retriever ran with a joyful bounce , its tail waving like a banner, its tongue lolling out in pure happiness.”
  • “The Corgi scampered with surprising speed , its short legs a blur as it raced to retrieve the thrown ball.”

How to Describe a Dog Attack in Writing

Describing a dog attack in writing requires careful handling.

It’s essential to portray the event realistically and sensitively, focusing on the actions of the dog, the reaction of the victim, and the aftermath of the event.

Describing the Dog’s Actions

An attacking dog might growl, bare its teeth, charge, or snap.

It might pounce or it might pin its intended target. When describing the dog’s actions, use strong, active verbs to convey the rapid, often chaotic sequence of events.

Be mindful, however, to avoid sensationalizing or vilifying the dog unnecessarily.

Describing the Victim’s Reaction

The victim’s reaction can range from fear to shock, panic to pain.

They might try to escape, protect themselves, or even fight back. Describe their physical responses – do they freeze, run, shout? What emotions are they feeling – terror, disbelief, anger?

Describing the Aftermath

The aftermath of a dog attack can be a potent way to demonstrate the seriousness of the situation.

This could be the immediate response – other people coming to help, calling for an ambulance or animal control – or the longer-term impacts, such as physical scars or psychological trauma.

  • “The Rottweiler charged with a menacing growl , its eyes locked onto the intruder, teeth bared in a threatening snarl.”
  • “The victim, frozen in fear, raised an arm protectively , a futile shield against the imminent attack.”
  • “The aftermath was a scene of chaos , people rushing to assist, the shrill sound of a whistle as someone called for animal control.”

How to Describe a Dog Bite Wound

Describing a dog bite wound can add a dramatic touch to your writing.

It’s important to be sensitive and accurate in such descriptions, focusing on the appearance, severity, and emotional impact of the wound.

Describing the Appearance

How a dog bite wound looks can change a lot based on the dog’s size, breed, and where the bite is located.

It might range from puncture wounds from the dog’s canines, to scratches from its smaller teeth, to torn skin in more severe cases.

It could be described as “a jagged tear in the skin”, “a row of puncture marks”, or “scratches, crisscrossing the skin.”

Describing the Severity

The severity of a dog bite wound can be used to amplify the drama and tension in your scene.

A minor bite could be described as “a series of shallow punctures,” while a serious bite might be described as “a deep, gaping wound.”

Always remember, however, to handle such descriptions with care, as they might be disturbing to some readers.

Describing the Emotional Impact

The emotional reaction to a dog bite wound can add depth to your description.

Consider the shock, pain, fear, or even anger that might be felt by the character who’s been bitten.

Essay on My Pet Dog for Students

Essay writing is a crucial part of language studies. Not just that, it is also a mandatory question in the school exam. Essay writing is included in the exam to check students’ imagination and how well they can weave their thoughts into words. It also evaluates someone’s understanding of language and grammar. Many people love to have dogs as their pets as they are friendly, loyal and a great stress reliever. Students can get a free essay on My Pet Dog at Vedantu’s site.

An Introduction On My Pet Dog

The relationship between humans and dogs can’t be expressed in words. Dogs are loyal and friendly and their love is unconditional. Make friends with dogs and you will never feel lonely. A dog is a domestic animal. Dogs are harmless unless someone attacks them.

On the way back from school, I found a helpless hungry puppy lying on the roadside. I brought it home. It was obvious, my mother burst with anger on seeing this. But with time, my mother accepted him and allowed him to stay with us. He has sparkles in his eyes which attracted us. My sister called him Sheru and that’s how he got a new name. Sheru does not demand much but good food, frequent conversation, exercise and a little fun activity.

Sheru is a member of our family. He loves to play and jumps all around the house. Everyone in the family loves him dearly as he is a stress buster for us. He is loyal and is a protractor of our family. There are a lot of lessons for why everyone must have dogs at home. Life becomes easy when you have an anytime available mate like them. They provide sympathy in our bad times, behave like a bodyguard in times of crises and a loving sibling at the time when we are lonely.

Long Essay on Pet Dogs

Around the world, people keep various animals as their pets. Some are fond of cats, while others prefer fish aquariums, some love to play with cows in the cattle field. But by far, the most adored animal on the planet is a dog. It is called a man’s best friend for the same reason. The loyalty of a dog is unmatched and unbeatable. The best instinct in dogs is to protect their owner. In a world that is constantly changing and there is a rush in every aspect of life, pets provide a sense of security and peace for their owners. When the owner returns home, he/she finds a dog waiting and jumps towards them with a sense of joy and excitement. Dogs are an excellent company. A loyal confidante and undeniably cute. There are various instances in which dogs have shown their bravery, saved the lives of their owners. Some dogs, even though they aren't physically savage, still manage to rescue their owners from danger. The dogs can sense something wrong before it even happens. Animals are gifted with a sixth sense.

For introverted people, dogs tend to be the perfect companions. The company of a dog is what a person needs when he/she is sad or upset. Dogs provide love and support, and they accurately detect when their owner is sad or crying.

Studies have shown that being in company with a dog can result in less anxiety. For someone battling with anxiety disorder, I can vouch for it, that dogs are the greatest stress busters, and sometimes even replace therapy sessions. A long walk with a dog can do the trick.

Types of Dogs

Dogs come in a variety of breeds. The most famous dog breeds are Labrador retrievers, bulldogs, german shepherds and pugs.

Although all the dogs are extremely friendly, nothing can beat a labrador when it comes to friendliness. They are loving and understand when their owner is upset or happy. The German shepherds, Dobermann and the bulldogs are quite protective, they serve well if the owner is living alone. The smaller breeds like pug and chihuahua are cute and are not that hard to tame. Pomeranians with their long hair are a little hard to maintain, but still can be done.

In a real-life incident that happened in 2013, a mountain dog called Bella saved her owner out of a burning house. That's how protective and caring the dogs are.

The reason dogs are so protective when it comes to their owners is that they consider them a family. But for a dog to act right when it's being protective it needs to be trained. Most dogs act aggressively when they are protective.

Short Essay On My Pet Dog

Owning a dog is also a huge responsibility and commitment. Owning a dog means taking care of it like a family member. It is like having a younger sibling or a small child in the home that constantly needs care and attention.

Before owning a pet, one also needs to know how to train a dog as it is quite important.

The dogs also need timely health checkups and they need to be taken to the vet constantly. The diet should also be taken care of since most dogs are allergic to some things.

How Do Dogs Positively Affect Human Health?

Research has shown that, in the company of dogs, humans are more cheerful and happy. It is also known to reduce anxiety in humans as well as lower blood pressure. In severe cases, being in the company of dogs has cured depression and other mental health issues.

Health Around Dogs

Any scratches or bites from dogs can be painful and may even be infectious, especially when dogs don't feel safe around something or are scared. The dog injuries can be prevented by training them and also taking a handful of precautions. Regular visits to the vet clinic can be helpful to keep any dog's infections or mites on the bay.

When petting the dog make sure the hands are washed before and after. This will reduce the risk of infections if any.

The dogs also need hygienic surroundings. The food supplies and the dog utensils should be kept clean.

It is a human need to be loved and appreciated, and dogs do that pretty well. With the company of a dog, a human can seldom feel alone. Humans are more likely to recover from illnesses when they are in the company of a dog. The interesting fact is that owning a dog will increase one's physical activity and well-being, as you need to consistently take them out for a walk outdoors, it is a win-win for both the owner and the dog.

Gather Interesting Facts about Dog’s Breed

Breeds distinguish all dogs. To supplement your essay with interesting facts, you need to research and collect a lot of interesting facts about your pet. Indeed, these facts are general and don’t describe the personal traits of your best friend. However, they can help readers get a particular understanding of your dog. For instance, if you specify a breed, there is no need to describe the dog’s appearance in more detail. However, if your pet dog is a mixed breed, it’s recommended to share some details that distinguish it among others.

Also, it’s advised to share some interesting facts about your dog’s breed. For instance, if your furry friend is a Siberian Husky, you can tell that your pet is playful and has plenty of energy that should be released. Also, dogs of this breed can easily withstand cold and run for a while.

Develop Your Pet’s Character

Writing an essay about your best friend, you don’t need to share a lot of generic information about a breed. You also should develop your pet’s character. All dogs have their personal traits that can be highlighted in your essay. You need to help readers understand that your furry friend is unique, so you can easily distinguish it from other dogs of the same breed.

The best way to do so is to talk about things that your pet likes the most. For example, you can say that your dog is a natural-born guard. If some birds land near a house, the dog spots them simultaneously and starts barking. Also, it never misses anyone who enters a house and always watches out the entrance.

Create an Outline and Write Several Drafts

It should imply the introduction, essay body, and conclusion. Every chapter serves a particular purpose. The introduction should draw readers’ attention and share the main idea of your essay. The body should contain all the information about your pet. The conclusion summarizes the main points and restates the main idea.

The outline should imply notes about the ideas you have to share with readers. It facilitates the essay writing process. If you have plenty of time upon the deadline, it’s recommended to compose several drafts and pick the best one to get a high grade. Alternatively, you can delegate this task to skilled writers. Then, you need to spot any possible mistakes to make your paper error-free. Also, you need to make sure that your essay matches all the requirements. Read instructions provided by your tutor and check if all the requirements are met. Finally, you need to check the level of plagiarism in your paper because tutors don’t accept essays that contain matched content.

Opinion Dogs are our greatest creation. And we might be theirs.

Tommy Tomlinson is the author of “ Dogland .” He lives in Charlotte with his wife, her mother and a cat named Jack Reacher.

The dog is humankind’s greatest invention. The wheel, the lightbulb, concrete — all amazing. Top of the line. But nothing in human creation has been as essential and adaptable as the countless descendants of the ancient gray wolf.

How did we do it? I spent three years following the traveling carnival of American dog shows — like a Grateful Dead tour with Milk-Bones — in search of the answer. My journey culminated in the dog world’s most prestigious event: the Westminster Dog Show. Show dogs are bred from the purest stock, culled from litters at just a few weeks old, trained with the dedication of Olympic gymnasts — and groomed like supermodels. They’d be unrecognizable to their ancient kin — and to ours.

The American Kennel Club, arbiter of bloodlines, now recognizes about 200 breeds, while tracking crossbreeds like goldendoodles, and even mutts. From the most massive mastiff to the tiniest teacup chihuahua, all dogs trace back to the same common ancestors.

Scientists think this weird and powerful companionship of humans and dogs might have started somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago. Humans of that era were mainly hunters traveling in camps. They ate meat by the fire. The cooking meat attracted wolves who were drawn to the aroma but stayed safely out of range of the flames. Every so often, a human would fling a bone into the darkness. The wolves gnawed on the bones. They trailed the humans to the next campsite, still keeping their distance. There was an unspoken arrangement. The wolves alerted the humans to intruders, and the humans fed the wolves well.

Over time the wolves crept closer. One fateful night a curious wolf came all the way into the firelight. The humans didn’t chase it off.

Slowly, the humans mingled with the wolves. After days or months or generations or centuries, a wolf curled up at a human’s feet. Maybe got its belly rubbed. That was the first dog.

As far as we can tell, dogs are the first animals that humans ever tamed. The wolves that hung out with humans found themselves changing inside and out. They developed shorter muzzles and smaller teeth. Their instinct to run became a desire to stay close. With time, dogs were manufactured through breeding to meet different human needs. We made huskies to pull sleds and Newfoundlands to pull fish nets and dachshunds to catch badgers.

Dogs taught humans the early science of designer genes. In the mid-19th century, as we moved off the farm and into the factory, we created dogs we could bring indoors at the end of a workday. And we created dogs we could bring to work: French bulldogs (now the most popular breed in America ) started out as literal lap dogs for lace-makers in France. We molded dogs to be friends, companions, playmates and unofficial therapists.

So dogs are not just humanity’s greatest invention but also its longest-running experiment.

That’s one way to look at it.

Now switch out the frame. Swap the subject and the object. Change the verbs.

Here’s another view:

Around the time early humans evolved, Neanderthals also walked the planet. At some point — roughly 40,000 years ago — humans started to thrive while Neanderthals died off. And this is about the time when those first curious wolves began to evolve into dogs. Some scientists believe the timing is not a coincidence. Maybe the dog was the key advantage in the triumph of humankind.

Dogs enabled humans to settle down and stop their endless wandering. Dogs protected humans at this vulnerable transition from nomadic to settled life. Dogs did work that humans did not have the strength or stamina to do: guarding, herding, hunting, pulling sleds. They created time for humans to build and think and create without having to focus every moment on the next meal or the next threat.

We domesticated dogs, and they domesticated us.

Today, dogs provide not just companionship but also an uncomplicated kind of love in an ever more complicated world. And for those restless souls wandering from town to town, chasing job after job — nomads again — a dog can be an anchor, something to hold on to on a lonely night.

From the gray wolf by the ancient fire to a coifed Pomeranian prancing around the show ring, dogs have been with us nearly as long as we have been human.

They might be our greatest creation. And we might be theirs.

What it’s like inside The Black Dog, the London pub made famous by Taylor Swift

I t’s a midweek lunchtime on an unassuming residential street in Vauxhall, south London. There aren’t many people about – the occasional dog walker, a few runners, a couple of delivery drivers. It’s pretty much what you’d expect on a drizzly work day.

But turning the corner, it’s a different story. A redbrick Victorian pub, draped in hanging flower baskets and mosaic tiling, is an unexpected hive of activity.

Despite the drizzle, people are sitting outside, nursing pints of beer and cups of coffee. Circling them are a handful of journalists – holding microphones, cameras, notepads. Passersby stop, point and pose for photos. Every few minutes, excited customers pour out of black cabs and head inside, where every table is taken.

Welcome to The Black Dog . A local London pub that’s been thrust into an unexpected spotlight and onto the tourist map, thanks to musician Taylor Swift.

Unexpected fame

Last Friday, Swift released her latest album, “ The Tortured Poets Department ,” along with a surprise additional 15 songs that make up “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.”

On Instagram, Swift described the music as chronicling a “fleeting and fatalistic moment in time - one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.” The record appears to be inspired by the aftermath of Swift’s break-up with her long term partner, British actor Joe Alwyn, which saw her dive into a short lived but intense relationship with another Londoner – 1975 singer Matty Healy.

Amid the 31 tracks – which range from upbeat synth pop masking heartbreak, to slower, folk-inspired songs that lean into the sadness – is a reflective, moody track called “The Black Dog,” in which Swift sings about an ex who left his cell phone location settings on after the break-up:

“And so I watch as you walk

Into some bar called The Black Dog

And pierce new holes in my heart”

As soon as these lyrics hit the internet, Swifties started sleuthing. Was The Black Dog a real London spot, or just a fictional name chosen for its symbolic significance?

Maddie Essig, an American college student studying abroad in London, was among the fans who immediately started Googling.

“Joe and Taylor spent a lot of time in London,” says Essig. “I figured it would be around here somewhere.”

Essig is sitting inside The Black Dog at a table by the window, opposite her friend – fellow American abroad and Swift fan – Jenna Spackey. When the two start chatting with CNN Travel, they’ve just finished up their pub lunch (Spackey had a cesar salad, Essig had British pub classic fish and chips).

The two friends had never been to Vauxhall before. But once they realized The Black Dog was real, they hopped on a tube train – partly as a Swiftie pilgrimage and partly to celebrate finishing up their college semester. The two only have a couple of weeks left in the UK before they return to the US – Essig to Baltimore, Maryland and Spackey to Houston, Texas. They’re calling this period their “So Long, London” era, an homage to another song on “The Tortured Poets Department” which references the UK capital.

This new record isn’t the first time Swift’s namechecked London locations in her music. In her 2019 track “London Boy” – believed to be about Alwyn – Swift describes enjoying “nights out in Brixton” and “Shoreditch in the afternoon,” as well as “walking Camden Market” and heading to Highgate, the West End and even finding joy in “gray sky, a rainy cab ride.”

“People will go to all the places that she lists in the song,” says Spackey of “London Boy.” “I feel like The Black Dog will definitely be added to the hit list.”

Pub perspective

While no one – least of all Swift – has actually confirmed the Vauxhall Black Dog is the inspiration for her song (there is another London-based Black Dog, for one, a beerhouse further out of the city in suburban Brentford – while some fans have pointed to a bar in Cork, Ireland with the same name ) the south London Black Dog has leaned into its unexpected fame.

There’s now a sign in the window quoting the lyrics. On Instagram, the pub’s added “home to tortured poets” into its bio. Inside The Black Dog, the cocktail list on the blackboard has the addendum “Taylor’s Version” – a reference to the way Swift delineates her recent rerecorded tracks from the originals.

Lily Bottomley, events and social media manager for SC Soho, the small hospitality group that owns The Black Dog, tells CNN Travel she first heard about the song through her own personal social media channels.

“I saw ‘Black Dog,’ and I was like, ‘Oh…’ And then it just spiraled. And within half a day – even before the album release, we had people showing up,” Bottomley says.

Over the weekend, the pub hired extra security – “just a precaution, nothing crazy happened.”

Then followed “a really busy Monday” and a slew of bookings for the end of June and mid-August, when Swift will play eight sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium. The Black Dog plans to open early and close later on those days. When Bottomley chats to CNN Travel, she gestures at the already-packed pub: “We’re expecting a busy Tuesday too.”

There’s been press coverage across the world, and as Bottomley speaks to CNN Travel, other news outlets are setting up lives and filming TikToks outside the pub.

The Black Dog was already active on Instagram pre-Swift-fame but Bottomley and her team set up a TikTok account over the weekend.

“Our TikTok, within 72 hours, got over 200,000 likes and a million views after its creation,” says Bottomley. “It’s immense.”

Meanwhile, the pub’s Instagram following has “tripled, nearly quadrupled now,” says Bottomley. People are following and commenting from all over the world.

The Black Dog is “a local pub,” says Bottomley – it’s generally known for its “quiet, cozy kind of atmosphere most of the time.”

Its interior is inviting, chic – and more gastropub than loud bar.

But the influx of enthusiastic Swift fans has been a joy, says Bottomley.

“We’ve had singalongs,” she says, adding the team are “working on” the idea of a Swift-themed karaoke night.

So far, the fans who’ve come by have all brought a positive, infectious good vibe.

“Last night we had loads of Swifties come in who didn’t know each other, and they were pulling chairs together, pulling their tables together, such a great atmosphere,” says Bottmley. “It’s predominantly women and it’s really positive to have that community come together in a pub.”

While many fans – like Essig and Spackey – believe “The Black Dog” is about Joe Alwyn, others think Matty Healy could be the subject (the references to smoking and the ex’s penchant for an “esoteric joke” seem more Healy-coded).

Bottomley won’t confirm or deny anything, but she does hint that the pub has “a certain blond regular,” seemingly a reference to Alwyn’s fair hair color.

As for Swift herself, Bottomley says she’s “never seen her” in the The Black Dog (which, again, fits with the lyrics of the song, which suggest Swift’s narrator is unfamiliar with the bar).

“You never know though,” says Bottomley. “We’d love to have her.”

Scene-setting song writing

When CNN Travel visits, there’s no time to sample The Black Dog’s inviting looking food menu , but this writer opts for a Swift-approved glass of Sauvignon Blanc (in another new track, “The Alchemy,” Swift compares the rush of a new love affair to a glass of wine: “This happens once every few lifetimes/These chemicals hit me like white wine,” she sings).

Meanwhile my companion tries The Black Dog’s signature stout and gives it the seal of approval. The two drinks come to £14.65 (around $18) which is about what you’d expect for London in 2024.

The stout is served up in a pint glass printed with the pub’s name, and accompanying black dog logo. Bottomley says no one’s stolen any of these glasses yet – much to her relief – but the pub is in the process of making merchandise, so visitors may be able to take a glass home before too long.

“If The Black Dog sold merch, I would buy something from their store,” says Swift fan Avangeline Strasburg. “Having something from a place I got to visit, that is also mentioned in a song of my favorite artist, would be a really neat souvenir.”

Florida-based Strasburg and her friend and fellow Floridian Katie Hageman are currently in London on vacation, in celebration of Strasburg’s 29th birthday.

“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, Taylor’s releasing an album, right for my birthday, right for our trip!’” says Strasburg.

When the two friends realized The Black Dog was a real pub, they knew they had to squeeze in a visit into their London itinerary.

“We wanted to see it for ourselves,” says Hageman.

The two friends describe the pub as “quaint” – adding it’s not really what they were expecting based on the song lyrics.

“Hearing those lyrics I think we assumed that it would be more of a dive bar with loud music,” says Hageman.

As they pore over The Black Dog’s food menu, deciding what to have for lunch, Hageman and Strasburg chat with CNN Travel about whether or not Swift’s “The Black Dog” song is really about this pub – and whether the song is about Matty Healy or Joe Alwyn, or both.

It’s fun to speculate, they agree, but “maybe it’s not even about a certain person.”

Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter, the two friends decide. What excites Strasburg and Hageman most of all is “The Black Dog”’s evocative, scene-setting lyrics, which are a staple of Swift’s song-writing.

This kind of writing is key to Swift’s success. The specificity of the imagery – such as the scarf in “All Too Well” which her ex still has in a “drawer even now” – allows listeners to put themselves in Swift’s shoes. Sure, she’s a Grammy-winning billionaire leading a life worlds away from what most of us view as ordinary, but Swift has a knack for drawing emotion from everyday, relatable details.

And when Swift describes locations – whether the rented apartment on “Cornelia Street” or the “saltbox house on the coast” in “The Last Great American Dynasty” she does so with a particularity and fervor that allows listeners to draw an image in their minds’ eyes.

“She always includes little details, sometimes they’re vague, sometimes they’re specific – but they’re always parts of her life,” says Strasburg.

Hageman compares “The Black Dog” song to a “fable” – it’s probably not based entirely in reality. It may not be a real place. It may not be about a real person.

“This made the song even more relatable to us,” she says. “And I think to all who have created stories based on the glittering filtered details we perceive of each others’ lives from the outside.”

Essay On My Pet Dog

Brownie runs very fast with his four tiny legs. He watches our house at night. In case of any noise, he barks out loudly. Although he barks at strangers, he never bites them. He loves eating vegetables and I sometimes offer him meat and fish to eat. I bathe him once every few days and play with him in the garden to ensure he is exposed to sunlight and fresh air every day.

My pet, Brownie is close to me and I love him very much. He cheers me up whenever I’m upset and we go for a walk every morning. He wags his tail with joy when I return from school. I take him to the veterinary doctor occasionally for vaccination. He is not just my pet dog, but my best friend too. He is indeed a blessing in my life.”

Jamaica teen takes top prize in NYPD essay-writing contest

jamaica

Tina Perumal, 18, bested 300 teens vying for an award in the Police Athletic League-NYPD annual essay competition. She snagged the prestigious NYPD Commander Award, one of a handful of NYPD awards for essay writing.  The contest was open to all New York City students in grades 9-12.

Perumal was honored on Tuesday during the Police Commissioner for a Day Ceremony. Her essay was noteworthy since it was based on the concept of her being appointed police commissioner, where she used the high-ranking position to bring together a task force to combat child neglect.

Perumal said the essay was inspired by a close friend who went through a traumatic childhood experience, which prompted her to focus on the topic. “My essay was basically helping to bring back child safety and bring attention to the child safety that doesn’t really get looked at or recognized,” she said.

Perumal, a senior at Martin Van Buren High School , plans to attend John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the fall. She grew up watching shows such as “Law and Order” and other crime series, and now plans to be a police officer. “That’s where my mind and my heart has always been set on,” she said. “I just also want to help everybody around me and just protect everyone.”

When she is not spending time writing award-winning essays, Perumal works as an administrative intern at Life Camp’s Creative Arts Lab . She has been working with the organization since 2022 and oversees middle and elementary school students in the program. Perumal said her time working at Life Camp has inspired her to expand her own world view.

“They provide a lot of opportunities for you to get yourself out there. To be something you never saw yourself becoming or changing yourself that you never saw yourself changing to be,” she said. Currently, Perumal is working with staff on raising funds for a trip to Six Flags so they can celebrate the work they have done at the Creative Arts Lab over the past two years.

Life Camp’s mission is to provide youth and families in Southeast Queens impacted by gun violence with tools to stay in school and out of the criminal justice system. The organization offers programs to affected youngsters and their families as part of the initiative.

The Creative Arts Lab is a program sponsored by Life Camp targeting youth aged 12-24. The lab offers educational programs focused on arts education including DJing, composition and recording, theater, dance, painting and an array of other artistic mediums.

NPR editor Uri Berliner resigns with blast at new CEO

Uri Berliner resigned from NPR on Wednesday saying he could not work under the new CEO Katherine Maher. He cautioned that he did not support calls to defund NPR.

NPR senior business editor Uri Berliner resigned this morning, citing the response of the network's chief executive to his outside essay accusing NPR of losing the public's trust.

"I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years," Berliner wrote in an email to CEO Katherine Maher. "I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay."

NPR and Maher declined to comment on his resignation.

The Free Press, an online site embraced by journalists who believe that the mainstream media has become too liberal, published Berliner's piece last Tuesday. In it, he argued that NPR's coverage has increasingly reflected a rigid progressive ideology. And he argued that the network's quest for greater diversity in its workforce — a priority under prior chief executive John Lansing – has not been accompanied by a diversity of viewpoints presented in NPR shows, podcasts or online coverage.

Later that same day, NPR pushed back against Berliner's critique.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff . "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

Yet Berliner's commentary has been embraced by conservative and partisan Republican critics of the network, including former President Donald Trump and the activist Christopher Rufo.

Rufo is posting a parade of old social media posts from Maher, who took over NPR last month. In two examples, she called Trump a racist and also seemed to minimize the effects of rioting in 2020. Rufo is using those to rally public pressure for Maher's ouster, as he did for former Harvard University President Claudine Gay .

Others have used the moment to call for the elimination of federal funding for NPR – less than one percent of its roughly $300 million annual budget – and local public radio stations, which derive more of their funding from the government.

Berliner reiterated in his resignation letter that he does not support such calls.

In a brief interview, he condemned a statement Maher issued Friday in which she suggested that he had questioned "whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity." She called that "profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning."

Berliner subsequently exchanged emails with Maher, but she did not address those comments.

"It's been building up," Berliner said of his decision to resign, "and it became clear it was on today."

For publishing his essay in The Free Press and appearing on its podcast, NPR had suspended Berliner for five days without pay. Its formal rebuke noted he had done work outside NPR without its permission, as is required, and shared proprietary information.

(Disclosure: Like Berliner, I am part of NPR's Business Desk. He has edited many of my past stories. But he did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Earlier in the day, Berliner forwarded to NPR editors and other colleagues a note saying he had "never questioned" their integrity and had been trying to raise these issues within the newsroom for more than seven years.

What followed was an email he had sent to newsroom leaders after Trump's 2016 win. He wrote then: "Primarily for the sake of our journalism, we can't align ourselves with a tribe. So we don't exist in a cocoon that blinds us to the views and experience of tens of millions of our fellow citizens."

Berliner's critique has inspired anger and dismay within the network. Some colleagues said they could no longer trust him after he chose to publicize such concerns rather than pursue them as part of ongoing newsroom debates, as is customary. Many signed a letter to Maher and Edith Chapin, NPR's chief news executive. They asked for clarity on, among other things, how Berliner's essay and the resulting public controversy would affect news coverage.

Yet some colleagues privately said Berliner's critique carried some truth. Chapin also announced monthly reviews of the network's coverage for fairness and diversity - including diversity of viewpoint.

She said in a text message earlier this week that that initiative had been discussed long before Berliner's essay, but "Now seemed [the] time to deliver if we were going to do it."

She added, "Healthy discussion is something we need more of."

Disclosure: This story was reported and written by NPR Media Correspondent David Folkenflik and edited by Deputy Business Editor Emily Kopp and Managing Editor Gerry Holmes. Under NPR's protocol for reporting on itself, no NPR corporate official or news executive reviewed this story before it was posted publicly.
