There are advantages and disadvantages to mobile phones. First, let’s discuss the positive aspects. Our mobile phones facilitate easy communication with friends and family. With our phones, we may use the internet to discover new things as well. With their maps, they make it easy for us to locate our route, and we can even snap photos with them.

However, there are also some drawbacks. Overuse of phones by some individuals can be problematic. It might cause eye pain or even make it difficult to fall asleep. Furthermore, excessive phone use might cause us to lose focus when driving or walking, which is risky.

Thus, we must use our phones responsibly. It’s important to remember to take pauses and not use them excessively. Similar to consuming candy, moderation is key when it comes to this. Utilizing our phones sensibly may make them enjoyable and beneficial. However, we must exercise caution so as not to allow them to cause us issues.

With so many benefits, mobile phones have become an essential part of our life. They facilitate communication and let us stay in touch with loved ones no matter where we are or when we want. Additionally, mobile phones offer instant access to information, which keeps us up to date on global events. They are also useful for navigation, taking pictures to save memories, and even handling our money using mobile banking.

But there are also some disadvantages to these advantages. Overuse of a phone can become addictive, diverting our attention and decreasing our productivity. Extended periods of screen usage can lead to health problems like strained eyes and disturbed sleep cycles. Other drawbacks include privacy issues and the possibility of cyberbullying, which emphasise how crucial it is to use mobile phones properly.

In conclusion, even while mobile phones are incredibly beneficial for communication, information access, and convenience, it is important to consider the possible risks they may pose to one’s health, privacy, and general well-being. Maintaining a balance in the use of mobile phones is crucial to maximise their benefits while minimising their drawbacks.

Communicating with loved ones, colleagues, friends, and more has never been simpler. According to Techspirited , “By allowing instant access to any desired destination across the globe, mobile phones have changed the landscape of communication. Not only globally, cell phones are important in day-to-day life” (“Advantages of Mobile Phones”). Besides the ease of communication, expressing oneself creatively has also never been so straightforward. As Wired says, “The smartphone, like the PC and the Internet before it, has turned into a unique outlet for our creative impulses, and it will affect our creative lives even more fundamentally” (Capps, Robert). With our applications, we can easily draw, take photographs, write, edit, paint, make videos, and more. Besides an ease of expression, the entertainment aspect of mobile phones is substantial. The website Outsource to India states that, “Entertainment and multimedia apps have many usages across industry verticals. These include video and audio players which play a variety of formats – such as remote control applications which play music tracks on your computer, apps that let you buy and sync music from the online stores and other devices, compose and record songs, personalized radio, digital TV, streaming of live scores and so on. Music and video apps are perhaps the most glaring example of the rise of multimedia in entertainment, and include notable examples such as S potify, TuneIn Radio, Apple Music, Play Music, Groove Music, Pandora , etc.” (“Entertainment and Multimedia Apps for Mobile Phones – O2I”). Basically, the mobile phone has become a miniature laptop computer in terms of its entertainment capabilities. Mobile phones are not only fantastic for increasing communication, creativity, and entertainment opportunities, but also for keeping us safe. According to Love to Know , mobile phones allow us to call for help, aid us in finding our cars, give us the opportunity to employ GPS to make sure we do not get lost, and gives us a hard weapon in hand (Tucker, Laura). The more applications you have, the greater chance you are safe. You might have a flashlight app, an emergency call app, find your home app, and much more. The key is to have these apps handy in case a difficult situation arises, instead of filing them away on your phone. Finally, mobile phones have a huge advantage over non-smartphones: the opportunity to use the internet. The internet allows you to search for information so quickly, that even competent people are often slower at recalling and coming up with the information you need. Even with an internet connection based on data, a Google search takes little time. You can search for the restaurant you want to go to, a word that you forgot, the location of the nearest police office for aid, and find any other pertinent information. With its help, we can be as smart and informed as we want to be at any given moment. It is hard to imagine, but we have all the data and information we will ever need on our mobile phone—that is a benefit that cannot be overlooked. As it has been shown, mobile phones give us the benefit of communicating easily, engaging in creative work through simple applications, being able to be entertained wherever we go, to be safer, and to access the internet with the press of a button. Who knows what more advantages the mobile phone will garner in the near future. Expository essays can be complex. They need a certain level of investigation, evaluation, and argumentation of ideas. Sometimes, it’s not easy to compile all the gained thoughts together. Some best paper writing services reviews show that there are websites that can provide you with assistance in putting your words on paper.

Beyond Communication: The Expansive Role of Mobile Phones in Education and Social Interaction

Continuing from the advantages already discussed, mobile phones also serve a substantial role in education and learning, fostering multitasking, and playing a crucial role in our daily life. Additionally, their importance in promoting digital communication, particularly through social media, cannot be underestimated.

Education and learning have been revolutionized due to the convenience and accessibility of mobile phones. In today’s era, smartphones can readily function as portable classrooms. According to an article published by Edutopia, mobile phones have drastically enhanced the accessibility of educational resources. Applications like Khan Academy, Coursera, and Duolingo have transformed our phones into hubs of knowledge, offering a broad spectrum of lessons, from languages to coding, all accessible at our fingertips. This remarkable shift promotes lifelong learning, enabling users to acquire new skills and knowledge in a manner that is convenient and tailored to their schedule.

Smartphones have also become an integral tool for multitasking . They are not just communication devices but are also calendars, music players, personal trainers, cameras, and even wallets. We can check our emails while listening to music, or take conference calls while reviewing presentation slides. This simultaneous handling of tasks boosts our efficiency and optimizes time management. However, it’s also essential to strike a balance and not let our smartphones become a source of constant distraction. Moreover, the use of mobile phones in our daily life is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Whether it is setting an alarm to wake up, tracking physical activity, ordering groceries, or paying bills, cell phones have become our personal assistants, simplifying tasks, and adding value to our lifestyle.

When it comes to fostering digital communication , mobile phones, especially through social media , have significantly influenced the way we interact. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram have made it possible to stay connected with people across the globe, share opinions, and even mobilize social change. Mobile technology has not only made it easier for us to express ourselves but has also provided a platform to voice social issues, shaping the discourse of societal norms and values.

As we look towards the future, the importance of mobile phones in our lives is likely to grow even further. With the constant advancement in technology, the features and capabilities of mobile phones are expanding, enhancing connectivity and accessibility. This has profound implications for sectors such as healthcare, where mobile phones can support telemedicine, and in remote work, where they can facilitate better work-life integration.

As it has been demonstrated, mobile phones, through their numerous features and applications, contribute significantly to various aspects of our lives, including communication, creativity, education, entertainment, and safety. They have become indispensable tools in the modern world, influencing our daily lives, enhancing our learning experiences, and shaping our social interactions.

Mobile Phones and Children

by Rony (Egypt )

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Last years have witnessed an increase in the number of threats and problems that unusually endangered children. In spite of being convinced that mobile phone might serve securing the child, I don't think it is an absolute importance. To start with the troublesome situations that might face the child to see how mobile phone could help him. First of all, threats that might endanger the child; kidnapping trials: the child could talk to his parents, or call for the police using his own portable phone, or falling in an emergency situation, like diabetic coma or asthmatic attacks Or getting wounded in the street he could also call his parents or ambulance. Second, complexities, that might be encountered these days, are for instance; getting lost while going school or home alone in this case making a call to his parents seeking help is very beneficial. Some new mobiles has many beneficial applications like maps, how to make fast foods in the absence of working parents, these apps would give a hand to children. To sum up, while complicated and threatening situations facing the child these days are rising, and mobile phones helpful applications and uses are increasing, I don't think that it is a must to give every child a mobile phone. As, this also, has its drawbacks on children, and not every family is leaving her child to face these problems alone. *** Is this a good essay? You can comment below on this Mobile Phone Essay.

can someone please proof read my answer to: The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? The ever changing society we live in these days is unfortunately acclaimed with increasing rates of crime making it a very unsafe place to live in for everyone. children safety is compromised where disturbing offences such as abduction and any kinds of abuse are more prevalent thee days. Due to this reason, the use of mobile phones particularly by children, have been considered as a must to address this issue. Parents or guardians nowadays have supplied their own children with mobile phones as a means of a safety reassuring device. Both parties benefit more from the technical use of a mobile phone especially in conditions we live, where dangers can arise at any point in time. Should safety be compromised from children, they can easily contact their parents or other members within the family, and other appropriate persons, such as the police, who is also concerned of their well being. This easy communication access, allows for relatives or the receiver on the line to act for safety in a timely manner. Furthermore, parents have the ease of mind to their children's whereabouts. The high technology of mobile phones allow them to easily contact or be informed with updates about their children's day. On the other hand, I believe such device is not a necessity for children in surviving this world evolved with crimes and complexities. Firstly, education can be provided to the young ones in regards to safety practices. This refers to knowing who can be trusted and not associating to strangers, never be physically in isolation and must be in large groups, and last but not least, informing them of where and who to go for safety, such as teachers, councillors or the police. These are very simple and cost effective, yet very effective ways in minimising and preventing dangers that can happen to children. Secondly, it is understandably important for parents to be aware of their children's day, however, constant communication which is considered as vital, can also interfere with these children's development of independence. Lastly, the use of mobile phones open endless opportunities of social and online gaming use, which can impact their interpersonal skills with other people and predispose them to violence. Evidently children are potentially imposed to dangers with their use of mobile phones. To conclude, although the device provide security for children while living in a troublesome and complicated world, I strongly believe it is unnecessary and inappropriate for children to own a mobile phone. Education and proper guidance should be provided for these children in order to live safely in this kind of environment we live in. GREATLY APPRECIATED IF YOU GUYS COMMENT ON IT ... :)

Cell Phones in the Classroom

by Deepak (Kathmandu)

It is argued that mobile phones and other electronic devices have no place in the classroom. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view? In the last decade, cell phones have become very famous and easily available throughout the world. Most of the students from across the globe have access to smartphones and they have been using these gadgets not only for study purposes but also for personal uses. However, I believe, the mobile phones should not be used inside the classroom because it distracts the pupils and also affect the effective interaction. One of the main reasons for not allowing mobile phones during the studying in classes is it hampers the student’s concentration. As a result, the student doesn’t understand the subject matter and gets poor grades in his mark sheet. For example, during my final year of undergraduate studies, there was a good student named Hari who failed in his favourite subject because of mobile chatting during the lecture times. So, to make a student distract less from mobile phones, these kinds of electronic devices should be kept out of the classroom. Another reason is a disturbance in proper discussion between teacher and students. Although the student can browse various sites using mobile data or Wi-Fi to get the information about subject matters in the classroom but he might lack to the point knowledge from his experienced teachers. In addition, he might waste too much time visiting the non-authentic sites. For instance, there are many personal blogs and websites where the student cannot get the relevant understanding of the subject matters. All in all, despite having a few advantages of using the mobile devices inside the classrooms, the students must not be allowed to use their cell phones to have the long-term good results for their studies and careers. Furthermore, this maintains good learning and teaching environment for both the students and teachers. *** Please help this students in their with their writing by feeding back on this IELTS Essay about Cell Phones in the Classroom.

Necessity of Mobile Phones Essay

by syed (Malaysia)

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? I agree that cellphones rather than an expensive commodity, is a must have for today's children as its function is not only for communication, but it also allows access to the worldwide web. Education has become more centralised and available for everyone online. In order to access information easily and rapidly, owning a cellphone is necessary. In the advent of technology, internet access is critical for knowledge, especially in the midst of current covid pandemic where tutorials are made online. Children no longer go to school, rather teachers expect every student to have at least a cellphone in order to access online classes. Increasing crime rate in the society and bullying in school have made children vulnerable to these perpetrators. Parents are not always there to supervise their kids, hence, cellphones allows children to contact family members when in danger without delay. Without cellphones, help might not be able to be attained immediately. However, unregulated access to the internet with the lack of supervision can lead to children browsing inappropriate content. Many studies have found that increase in time spent on screen has many negative impacts.Children lack fundamental communication skills. Dyslexia is also another common theme.Usage of mobile phone in the dark can lead to sleep disturbances, which can hamper children's concentrating ability in school. Owning a cellphone has become a necessity in the 21st century as it has many benefits. However, lack pf supervision can have a detrimental effect towards these children.

IELTS Essay - Necessity of Mobile Phones for Children

by Lalarukh

The dangers and complexities of the modern world have made the mobile phone an absolute necessity for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree? These days, there is an ongoing debate between people about how mobile phone have become a need for children due to the intense situation of the new era. While some people still argue that mobile phone have become an absolute need of a child, in my view, the disadvantages of mobile phone outweigh the advantages. In this essay i will explain my point of view by analysing both sides. These are several reason that i believe have cause more harm to children of keeping mobile phone then giving them benefit. Firstly, children spend much more time on cellphones rather than participating in other activities. It takes away precious time of sports and other recreational activities. Also, it affects the eye sight of the children. Many studies have shown that children who spend much more time on mobile phone have weak eye sight and thus end up wearing sight glasses at a very young age. Moreover, the more children spend time on mobile phone, the less exposure they have of the outer world. This reduces self confidence in children while dealing with people and socialising on a larger extent. From my personal experience, i would quote about my niece, who at a very young age have been given mobile phone. She spends majority of her time on games due to which she interacts less with the people around. Lastly, the use of mobile phone have damaged the mind of many children. The unnecessary or wrong use have made children exposed to certain objectionable things at a very young age. For example, there exist many application that are not for children under 18 years, but with mobile phone, children do have easy access to it. Now those who argue that due to the danger in the modern world have resulted the use of mobile phones claims that for the purpose of security it have become basic necessity. With fast moving education system, children have academies, schools and universities to go so with the help of mobile phone there remains a constant communication between the parent and a child. While, there is strong opinion on both sides of the case in my opinion, children still must be given mobile phone until a certain age. I would recommend that for the purpose of security due to the danger presiding in the outside world, the use of mobile phone can be allowed only in the hours of school, college etc or during travelling. Also, a strict check must be kept by the parents on usage of mobile phone .

Restricted Use of Mobile Phones Essay

by Aditya (Uttar Pradesh)

Some schools have restricted the use of mobile phones. Is this a positive or negative development? Students of most schools carry cell phones with them. While these devices play a vital role in safety, connectedness and convenience, a number of schools have prohibited their use on campus. In my opinion, this is a positive decision and can benefit students not academically but also physically and socially as well. Restricting phone use in the classroom itself can improve learning. Uninterrupted studies can result in exceptional results as the primary focus remains on the subject. A continuously ringing or beeping device, for instance, can distract both teacher and student as well as other learners too and also amplifies the urge of the individual to check their phone every now and then for texts, calls and other notifications. Even the most observant teacher cannot ignore them from sneakily checking their messages or scrolling through irrelevant content mid-class. This eventually leads to imperfect knowledge which can adversely affect an individual's academic progress since half knowledge possess no value. Banning cell phones can prevent happening of these events and can bolster the academic performance of learners. In addition to banning phones in the classroom, constraining them outside the classroom as well can result in students wellbeing. Indeed, if cellular phone are banned at recess, children will be left with no other option than to interact with other students and indulge in numerous physical activities. Kids can play games, sports, or just sit and chat with their friends which is far better than sitting alone hunched over a screen. Without limitation enforced by schools, children simply cannot draw the line on their phone use. These social and physical gains are only possible with stern phone rules. In conclusion, despite cell-phones are a fundamental part of our modern lives, I strongly deem that their use in schools should be controlled. With firm boundaries and bans in some conditions, students are able to learn better, build up friendships and engage in healthier pursuits.

Health Issues

Excessive use of mobile phones can lead to health issues. Staring at the screen for long hours can cause eye strain. Also, it can lead to poor posture and sleep disorders, impacting a student’s overall health.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phone Essay 500 words

The Impact of Mobile Phones on Our Lives

Mobile phones have significantly transformed the way we live in today’s modern world. This remarkable innovation has brought convenience and comfort to our lives, but like everything else, it has its drawbacks.

  • Easy Communication: Mobile phones have made it incredibly easy to stay connected with family and friends, even those who live far away. They make communication more convenient and affordable. With features like video calls, text messaging, and recorded calls, staying in touch has never been easier.
  • Education Accessibility: During and after the Covid-19 pandemic, many educational institutions started offering online classes. Since not everyone has a laptop or computer at home, mobile phones have played a crucial role in helping students access online education. They’ve brought education to even the most remote corners of the world.
  • Eye Health: Prolonged use of mobile phones can harm eyesight. Complaints like redness, itching, watery eyes, and dryness are common among frequent mobile phone users. Harmful rays emitted by mobile phones can also affect vision in some cases. To counter these effects, it’s advisable to perform basic eye muscle exercises, regularly wash your eyes, and take breaks while using the phone.
  • Distraction: Parents often complain about their children using mobile phones excessively, which can lead to less study and playtime. Even adults can get distracted from work or important tasks by mobile phones. To combat this, it’s a good idea to allocate specific time slots for mobile phone use. For example, students can study for an hour and then spend 10 minutes on their phone, repeating the cycle. Installing time-blocking apps that alert you when you’ve spent too much time on an app can also help.

In today’s age of technological advancement, mobile phones have become incredibly important. They’ve simplified our lives in many ways. However, how we use mobile phones can have both positive and negative effects. While they are designed to improve human interaction and provide quick access to information, overuse can lead to adverse outcomes, including negative health effects.

It’s crucial for both students and adults to be mindful of their mobile phone usage. We can make the best use of mobile phones for accessing information, communication, and entertainment when we use them mindfully and in moderation. Remember, balance is key to reaping the benefits of this technological marvel while minimizing its downsides.

200 Word Essay On Mobile Phone

The mobile phone, also known as the cellular phone, is a piece of technology that has greatly impacted our lives by bringing the world closer together. With the ability to communicate instantly through various forms of media, such as audio, video, and text, the mobile phone has become an essential tool for people of all ages. From its early days as a device for making and receiving calls, to its current state as a multifaceted device with a wide range of capabilities, such as web browsing, gaming, photography, and navigation, the mobile phone has continually evolved to meet the needs of its users. The development of mobile telephony can be traced back to early radio engineering and has progressed through several "generations" with the introduction of 0G systems like Bell System's Mobile Telephone Service, to the current 5G networks.

One of the most significant advancements in mobile technology has been the introduction of smartphones. These devices have enabled us to access the internet, use various apps, and perform a wide range of tasks from one compact device. This has changed the way we consume and share information, making it easier than ever to stay informed and connected. From social media to online shopping, banking, and entertainment, the mobile phone has opened up a world of possibilities.

The widespread use of mobile phones has also had a positive impact on industries such as education, healthcare, and transportation. With the help of mobile technology, students can access online resources and virtual classrooms, while doctors can remotely diagnose and monitor patients. Mobile phone applications have also made transportation more convenient and efficient, with the ability to book and track rides, view real-time traffic, and access public transportation schedules.

500 Word Essay On Mobile Phone

History and development.

The development of mobile telephony can be traced back to early radio engineering, with the Finnish inventor Areic Tigerstedt filing a patent application in 1917 for "the pocket-size folding telephone with an extremely thin carbon microphone." The first predecessors of cellular phones were analogue radio broadcasts from trains and ships. Following the Second World War, competition between several countries to create portable telephone equipment began.

Beginning with early zeroth-generation (0G) systems like Bell System's Mobile Telephone Service and its replacement, the Improved Mobile Telephone Service, the advancements in mobile telephony may be followed in consecutive "generations." These 0G systems were extremely costly, non-cellular, and unable to handle several simultaneous calls.

The introduction of smartphones in the early 2000s marked a significant advancement in mobile technology. These devices have enabled us to access the internet, use various apps, and perform a wide range of tasks from one compact device. The development of mobile networks from 2G to 5G has also greatly improved the speed and reliability of mobile communications.

Impact On Daily Life

The convenience of being able to make and receive calls and messages from anywhere at any time has made our lives more efficient and productive. One of the most significant advancements in mobile technology has been the introduction of smartphones. These devices have changed the way we consume and share information, making it easier than ever to stay informed and connected. From social media to online shopping, banking, and entertainment, the mobile phone has opened up a world of possibilities.

A Necessary Evil

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our daily lives, and while they offer many benefits, they also have some negative effects. Many people consider mobile phones to be a "necessary evil" because they are vital for communication and productivity, but they can also have negative consequences on our social interactions, mental and physical health, and overall well-being.

One of the main reasons why mobile phones are considered a necessary evil is because they have become essential for communication in today's fast-paced society. They allow us to stay connected with loved ones, colleagues, and the world around us, which is critical for personal and professional relationships. However, this constant connectivity can also lead to a lack of face-to-face communication, which can negatively impact our social interactions and relationships.

Additionally, mobile phones can also have negative effects on our mental and physical health. The constant use of mobile phones can lead to eye strain, headaches, and poor posture, and the blue light emitted by screens can disrupt sleep patterns. Furthermore, the constant distractions and notifications from mobile phones can lead to a decreased ability to focus and increased stress levels.

Moreover, mobile phones have been blamed for the reduction in privacy and security, with many people concerned about the amount of personal data that is collected and stored by mobile phone companies, apps and other third-parties.

In conclusion, the mobile phone has come a long way from its early days as a tool for making and receiving calls. It has transformed into a powerful device that has made our lives more convenient, efficient, and connected. The mobile phone continues to evolve and improve, making it an essential part of our modern world. The history, development, and impact of mobile phones on our daily lives are significant, and it is clear that it has been and will continue to be a vital technology in our society.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Apps [Sample Answer]

Posted by David S. Wills | Oct 10, 2020 | Model Essays | 0

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Apps [Sample Answer]

Today, I am going to help you write an IELTS task 2 essay on the topic of mobile apps. Specifically, we will be looking at the advantages and disadvantages of apps that allow you to pay for things. This is a very modern topic but it is not widespread enough that it could be considered IELTS-worthy.

[You can read more about IELTS and mobile phones here .]

Understanding the Question

ielts writing task 2 - question analysis

First of all, let’s look at the question we will explore today:

In many countries, paying for things using mobile phone apps is becoming increasingly common. Does this development have more advantages or disadvantages?

There are a few things you should do when you see an IELTS question like this:

  • Find the keywords
  • Look for micro-keywords
  • Recognise the question words

By “keywords” I mean the words that tell you what this topic is basically about – ie the main idea. In this case, I would say that “mobile phone apps” is the keyword. This is the main idea of the question.

However, we need to look beyond that. We should find some micro-keywords, too. In this case, you should note the word “paying.” That is quite important here. It tells you what aspect of the main idea that you should focus on.

Then, we need to find the question words, which is very easy: “advantages” and “disadvantages.” (You can read a full guide to advantage/disadvantage essays here .)

Once you have done all of this, you should have a reasonable understanding of the question. Basically, you need to say whether there are more advantages or disadvantages to the increasing use of mobile apps for payments .

Avoiding a Pitfall

I want to note a common problem here. In my IELTS writing correction service , I sometimes see people make a mistake with this question. They read the keyword (“mobile phone apps”) but not the micro-keyword (“paying”).

The result is that they talk about online shopping in general, but that is not what you should talk about. If I wrote about shopping on Amazon or eBay, for example, I would get a terrible score for Task Achievement. Instead, I should look into online payment systems:

Please make sure that you always read the question carefully to avoid such misunderstandings.

How to Answer the Question

Once you understand the question fully, you should spend some time planning your answer. Do not spend too much time or else you will run short of writing time. Instead, plan quickly but carefully. Think of your overall position and then the main ideas you want to write about.

Here are some important things that you must do:

1. Establish and Maintain a Clear Position

It states in the IELTS marking rubric that candidates are required to give and maintain a consistent position throughout the essay. That means, in the most basic sense, that you should not say “the advantages outweigh the disadvantages” in the first paragraph and then “the disadvantages outweigh the advantages” in a later paragraph.

For this reason, it is essential that you provide a clear position in your introduction and then stick to it throughout the essay. In my first paragraph, I will include the following line:

This essay will argue that these provide far more advantages than disadvantages.

In this case, “these” refers to “mobile phone apps.” I have used a pronoun to avoid repetition in the actual essay.

Note: You are not required to provide balance in this sort of essay. It is fine to do so, but it is also fine to give a totally one-sided argument. You can read more about providing balance in IELTS essays here .

2. Provide a Simple, Functional Structure

It is important for all IELTS essays that you provide a reasonable structure. This will differ from essay to essay, but there are some basic formats that you can adapt to almost all questions.

For task 2, I pretty much always use a four-paragraph structure although sometimes five is better. My essays typically look like this:

In the case of this particular essay, I would structure my essay like this:

Note: I mentioned above that you do not have to give a balanced viewpoint, but you see that I have devoted one paragraph to advantages and one paragraph to disadvantages. I would not call this balanced because I have argued against the disadvantages. This is a slightly advanced method that allows you to use good language and demonstrate your capacity for logical thinking.

3. Pick the Right Language

Once you have come up with your ideas and structures, you can begin to write the essay. It might be worth noting a few useful words and phrases before you begin. If anything brilliant strikes you, you can note it down and use it later.

Here is some useful vocabulary that I will use in my essay:

  • vast array of payment options
  • revolutionised the global economy
  • paying street vendors
  • fumbling about for money
  • track and limit their expenditures
  • government intrusion of their privacy
  • authoritarian surveillance states
  • cryptocurrency wallets
  • transaction speed
  • digital payment methods

I will also use the word “adopt” when talking about using a new technology for the first time. This is a great word that shows intent to use something useful. I will also say “the advent of…” when talking about something being invented.

Sample Band 9 Answer

Ok, that’s enough preparation. Here is my essay:

IELTS Essay About Mobile Phone Apps

In the twenty-first century, people have been provided with a vast array of payment options that have revolutionised the global economy. In many places, mobile phone apps can now be used to make payments quickly and securely. This essay will argue that these provide far more advantages than disadvantages.

The ability to pay for goods and services with a mobile app has made life far more convenient in many parts of the world, where this sort of technology has been adopted. In China, for example, people can use Alipay or WeChat in most shops, as well as for online purchases, transport, and even when paying street vendors. It is more convenient than using cash because people do not have to search for the correct change, nor do they need to wait and receive coins or small notes. Having this phone app allows them to give the exact fee without fumbling about for money in their wallet or purse. In fact, many people no longer take money out with them and instead rely upon their phone for all payments. This makes life more convenient and also allows them to track and limit their expenditures easily.

Of course, there are some drawbacks. For one thing, people are rightfully worried about government intrusion of their privacy. Particularly in authoritarian surveillance states like China, governments closely watch people to monitor their activity, using algorithms to detect unusual spending patterns. Whilst the seriousness of this cannot be downplayed, it is one of the only major disadvantages of this technological breakthrough, and in future it is possible that a more private system may emerge. At present, there are cryptocurrency wallets that could offer the same basic functions but with more privacy; however, they are not yet as convenient because they are not widely accepted, fluctuate wildly in terms of value, and are comparatively slow in transaction speed.

In conclusion, despite there being some valid concerns about privacy, the advent of digital payment methods has been a huge boost for consumers around the world due to the vastly improved level of convenience provided.

Social Media and Mobile Devices in Healthcare

This essay about the integration of social media and mobile devices in healthcare examines how these technologies transform patient engagement and service delivery. Termed “mHealth,” mobile devices offer real-time health tracking and direct communication with healthcare providers, enhancing personalized care. Social media serves as a platform for health information dissemination, public awareness, and community support for those with chronic illnesses. However, the adoption of these technologies also brings challenges such as data privacy concerns and the spread of misinformation. The essay argues that despite these hurdles, the benefits, including improved healthcare outcomes and operational efficiency, are significant. It emphasizes the need for stringent data protection measures and accurate information management to fully realize the potential of digital tools in healthcare.

How it works

In recent years, the intersection of social media and mobile devices with healthcare has spurred a revolution in how we approach wellness and medical care. These technological tools have opened up new avenues for communication, education, and even treatment within the healthcare sector. From patient empowerment to medical research, the impact of social media and mobile devices in healthcare is profound and multifaceted.

One of the most significant contributions of social media in healthcare is its role in patient education and empowerment.

Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have become hubs for sharing health-related information, from tips on managing chronic conditions to updates on medical research. Patients now have unprecedented access to resources and support networks, allowing them to take a more active role in their own healthcare journey. Moreover, social media provides a platform for patients to share their experiences and connect with others facing similar health challenges, fostering a sense of community and reducing feelings of isolation.

Mobile devices, particularly smartphones and tablets, have also revolutionized healthcare delivery and accessibility. Health apps abound, offering everything from medication reminders to symptom tracking to virtual consultations with healthcare providers. These apps not only empower individuals to take charge of their health but also facilitate better communication between patients and healthcare professionals. For instance, telemedicine platforms allow patients to consult with doctors remotely, eliminating the need for in-person visits and expanding access to care, especially in rural or underserved areas.

Furthermore, social media and mobile devices have become invaluable tools for medical research and public health initiatives. Researchers can harness the vast amounts of data generated on these platforms to study health trends, monitor outbreaks, and even predict disease outbreaks. For example, analyzing Twitter data has been shown to accurately forecast influenza outbreaks weeks in advance, providing valuable insights for public health interventions. Additionally, social media campaigns have proven effective in raising awareness about health issues and promoting preventive measures, such as vaccination and screening.

Despite their numerous benefits, social media and mobile devices in healthcare also present challenges and concerns. Privacy and security are major considerations, as the sharing of personal health information on these platforms raises issues of confidentiality and data protection. Moreover, the proliferation of health apps has led to concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the information provided, as well as the potential for misinformation to spread unchecked. Additionally, disparities in access to technology and digital literacy may exacerbate existing inequalities in healthcare access and outcomes.

In conclusion, social media and mobile devices have become indispensable tools in modern healthcare, offering unprecedented opportunities for patient education, communication, and research. However, their widespread adoption also brings challenges that must be addressed to ensure the responsible and ethical use of these technologies. By leveraging the power of social media and mobile devices while addressing their limitations, we can continue to innovate and improve healthcare delivery for all.

Workers seek to alter the balance of power in Canadian video game industry

Game Workers Unite Montreal is building a Quebec-wide union

Share All sharing options for: Workers seek to alter the balance of power in Canadian video game industry

Isabelle (from Animal Crossing) and Wario pointing to a sign that says “Unions NOW!”

Video game workers in Quebec, under the Game Workers Unite Montreal banner, are partnering with Canadian trade union Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) in an effort to shape the industry for the better. Together, they’re launching a union drive to form a provincewide union for Quebec-based video game workers. Quebec is home to nearly 15,000 workers, according to GWU Montreal, at studios like Behaviour Interactive, Ubisoft, Warner Bros. Games, Electronic Arts, and Gameloft, making it a hotbed for the industry and its workers.

Together, they’re hoping to make not just one or two studios a better place to work — but all of them. “The general public loves games and consumes them on a daily basis, but has no idea how games are made, or by who,” Marie, a game writer, told Polygon. (Marie requested to be identified by their first name only because their employer doesn’t know that they’re organizing.) “It’s an opportunity for us to take that fight, that work we’ve been doing for years, to a larger platform.”

Game Workers Unite has operated for years as a democratic workers’ organization, but was not itself a union. Now that’s changing: Under CSN, Game Workers Unite Montreal members (which span all of Quebec, not just Montreal) will have access to many more resources. Workers will join individual unions tied to studios, each of which will negotiate with their own employers, CSN president Caroline Senneville told Polygon.

“This structure will ensure the development of solidarity between studios, sharing of collective knowledge, and collaboration around common issues,” Senneville said. “Union members will be able to collectively decide on which demands rally around, all while guaranteeing autonomy to its local components. A province-wide union gives a greater balance of power to the workers as they form a bigger group. This will benefit all, but especially small studios.”

There’s a lot to love about the video game industry, according to Marie — it’s a young, modern field full of passionate, creative people. “But maybe the public doesn’t know that it’s an industry on fire,” they said, referring to the mass layoffs and studio closures that have plagued the business for several years now; nearly 10,000 people have been laid off this year alone. That’s on top of brutal workloads, low pay, crunch hours, and, sometimes, physical and mental abuse. Rida Hamdani, who previously worked in quality assurance, told Polygon that job stability was a huge problem in that sector: Working on a contract, you could have work one week and none the next.

With CSN, GWU Montreal will become a bigger destination for answers and help. “What are the standards for working conditions?” Hamdani said. “What are the labor laws? Is this normal? That’s all things we’ve been doing for a while, but with the help of the CSN, it’s going to make it easier for workers in the game industry to have access to that information and legal help to know their rights.”

The ability to negotiate union contracts, too, will let workers leverage this information into actual change.

It can be easy to separate the worker from the product — in this case, video games — but Marie and Hamdani are hoping the union drive can help humanize the industry. They want players to understand that unionization not only impacts workers and their livelihoods, but gaming itself. It’s not only the ethically right thing to do to support other humans’ right to safe, equitable work; it’ll impact games being made, too.

“If the industry continues to go the way it’s been going these last few years with studio closures and game projects being canceled because of mass layoffs, it’s going to be a big loss for players,” Marie said. “It’s in players’ interest to educate themselves about how a game is made. Who is making games, and in what condition? It’s a creative industry, and the industry lies on workers’ backs.”

“The people who make games deserve the same respect that games themselves get,” said Hamdani.

Biden- Harris Administration Announces Key AI Actions 180 Days Following President   Biden’s Landmark Executive   Order

Six months ago, President Biden issued a landmark Executive Order to ensure that America leads the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence (AI). Since then, agencies all across government have taken vital steps to manage AI’s safety and security risks, protect Americans’ privacy, advance equity and civil rights, stand up for consumers and workers, promote innovation and competition, advance American leadership around the world, and more.   Today, federal agencies reported that they completed all of the 180-day actions in the E.O. on schedule, following their recent successes completing each 90-day, 120-day, and 150-day action on time. Agencies also progressed on other work tasked by the E.O. over longer timeframes.   Actions that agencies reported today as complete include the following:   Managing Risks to Safety and Security: Over 180 days, the Executive Order directed agencies to address a broad range of AI’s safety and security risks, including risks related to dangerous biological materials, critical infrastructure, and software vulnerabilities. To mitigate these and other threats to safety, agencies have:

  • Established a framework for nucleic acid synthesis screening to help prevent the misuse of AI for engineering dangerous biological materials. This work complements in-depth study by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Energy (DOE) and Office of Science and Technology Policy on AI’s potential to be misused for this purpose, as well as a DHS report that recommended mitigations for the misuse of AI to exacerbate chemical and biological threats. In parallel, the Department of Commerce has worked to engage the private sector to develop technical guidance to facilitate implementation. Starting 180 days after the framework is announced, agencies will require that grantees obtain synthetic nucleic acids from vendors that screen.
  • Released for public comment draft documents on managing generative AI risks, securely developing generative AI systems and dual-use foundation models, expanding international standards development in AI, and reducing the risks posed by AI-generated content. When finalized, these documents by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will provide additional guidance that builds on NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework, which offered individuals, organizations, and society a framework to manage AI risks and has been widely adopted both in the U.S. and globally.
  • Developed the first AI safety and security guidelines for critical infrastructure owners and operators. These guidelines are informed by the completed work of nine agencies to assess AI risks across all sixteen critical infrastructure sectors.
  • Launched the AI Safety and Security Board to advise the Secretary of Homeland Security, the critical infrastructure community, other private sector stakeholders, and the broader public on the safe and secure development and deployment of AI technology in our nation’s critical infrastructure. The Board’s 22 inaugural members include representatives from a range of sectors, including software and hardware company executives, critical infrastructure operators, public officials, the civil rights community, and academia.
  • Piloted new AI tools for identifying vulnerabilities in vital government software systems. The Department of Defense (DoD) made progress on a pilot for AI that can find and address vulnerabilities in software used for national security and military purposes. Complementary to DoD’s efforts, DHS piloted different tools to identify and close vulnerabilities in other critical government software systems that Americans rely on every hour of every day.

Standing up for Workers, Consumers, and Civil Rights The Executive Order directed bold steps to mitigate other risks from AI—including risks to workers, to consumers, and to Americans’ civil rights—and ensure that AI’s development and deployment benefits all Americans. Today, agencies reported that they have:

  • Developed bedrock principles and practices for employers and developers to build and deploy AI safely and in ways that empower workers. Agencies all across government are now starting work to establish these practices as requirements, where appropriate and authorized by law, for employers that receive federal funding.
  • Released guidance to assist federal contractors and employers comply with worker protection laws as they deploy AI in the workplace. The Department of Labor (DOL) developed a guide for federal contractors and subcontractors to answer questions and share promising practices to clarify federal contractors’ legal obligations, promote equal employment opportunity, and mitigate the potentially harmful impacts of AI in employment decisions. DOL also provided guidance regarding the application of the Fair Labor Standards Act and other federal labor standards as employers increasingly use of AI and other automated technologies in the workplace.
  • Released resources for job seekers, workers, and tech vendors and creators on how AI use could violate employment discrimination laws. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s resources clarify that existing laws apply the use of AI and other new technologies in employment just as they apply to other employment practices.
  • Issued guidance on AI’s nondiscriminatory use in the housing sector. In two guidance documents, the Department of Housing and Urban Development affirmed that existing prohibitions against discrimination apply to AI’s use for tenant screening and advertisement of housing opportunities, and it explained how deployers of AI tools can comply with these obligations.
  • Published guidance and principles that set guardrails for the responsible and equitable use of AI in administering public benefits programs. The Department of Agriculture’s guidance explains how State, local, Tribal, and territorial governments should manage risks for uses of AI and automated systems in benefits programs such as SNAP. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a plan with guidelines on similar topics for benefits programs it oversees. Both agencies’ documents prescribe actions that align with the Office of Management and Budget’s policies, published last month, for federal agencies to manage risks in their own use of AI and harness AI’s benefits.
  • Announced a final rule clarifying that nondiscrimination requirements in health programs and activities continue to apply to the use of AI, clinical algorithms, predictive analytics, and other tools. Specifically, the rule applies the nondiscrimination principles under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act to the use of patient care decision support tools in clinical care, and it requires those covered by the rule to take steps to identify and mitigate discrimination when they use AI and other forms of decision support tools for care.
  • Developed a strategy for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of AI deployed in the health care sector. The strategy outlines rigorous frameworks for AI testing and evaluation, and it outlines future actions for HHS to promote responsible AI development and deployment.

Harnessing AI for Good President Biden’s Executive Order also directed work to seize AI’s enormous promise, including by advancing AI’s use for scientific research, deepening collaboration with the private sector, and piloting uses of AI. Over the past 180 days, agencies have done the following:

  • Announced DOE funding opportunities to support the application of AI for science , including energy-efficient AI algorithms and hardware.
  • Prepared convenings for the next several months with utilities, clean energy developers, data center owners and operators, and regulators in localities experiencing large load growth. Today, DOE announced new actions to assess the potential energy opportunities and challenges of AI, accelerate deployment of clean energy, and advance AI innovation to manage the growing energy demand of AI.
  • Launched pilots, partnerships, and new AI tools to address energy challenges and advance clean energy. For example, DOE is piloting AI tools to streamline permitting processes and improving siting for clean energy infrastructure, and it has developed other powerful AI tools with applications at the intersection of energy, science, and security. Today, DOE also published a report outlining opportunities AI brings to advance the clean energy economy and modernize the electric grid.
  • Initiated a sustained effort to analyze the potential risks that deployment of AI may pose to the grid. DOE has started the process of convening energy stakeholders and technical experts over the coming months to collaboratively assess potential risks to the grid, as well as ways in which AI could potentially strengthen grid resilience and our ability to respond to threats—building off a new public assessment .
  • Authored a report on AI’s role in advancing scientific research to help tackle major societal challenges, written by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Bringing AI Talent into Government The AI and Tech Talent Task Force has made substantial progress on hiring through the AI Talent Surge. Since President Biden signed the E.O., federal agencies have hired over 150 AI and AI-enabling professionals and, along with the tech talent programs, are on track to hire hundreds by Summer 2024. Individuals hired thus far are already working on critical AI missions, such as informing efforts to use AI for permitting, advising on AI investments across the federal government, and writing policy for the use of AI in government.

  • The General Services Administration has onboarded a new cohort of Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF) and also announced their first-ever PIF AI cohort starting this summer.
  • DHS has launched the DHS AI Corps , which will hire 50 AI professionals to build safe, responsible, and trustworthy AI to improve service delivery and homeland security.
  • The Office of Personnel Management has issued guidance on skills-based hiring to increase access to federal AI roles for individuals with non-traditional academic backgrounds.
