Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Deep’ On Netflix, A Thai Thriller Where Sleep Means Death For a Group of Students

Stream It Or Skip It: 'The Grimm Variations' on Netflix, An Anime That Turns the Classic Grimms' Fairy Tales on Their Head

Sleep – and the lack of it – is the basis for many a thriller. Films like  Inception ,  The Machinist , and even favorites like  Fight Club   and  A Nightmare On Elm Street   have explored what can happen to us when we’re dreaming, awake, or not getting the sleep we need. Thai thriller Deep , now streaming on Netflix, makes sleep a life-or-death scenario for a group of medical school students.

DEEP : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Jane (Panisara Rikulsurakan) is used to going without sleep. The medical student spends her nights studying, caring for her grandmother, and worrying about her little sister June. She’s obsessively concerned with the safety of her house, and checking the locks multiple times only make the nights longer. When she discovers they are extremely behind on their home loan, a professor suggests she sign up for a German pharmaceutical trial offering cash compensation. The project is dedicated to harvesting a chemical from the brain called “Qratonin”, essentially the opposite of melatonin – they hope to use it to wake up coma patients. The catch? If Jane falls asleep, she dies. It may be a terrifying notion, but Jane is so used to sleeping – and so desperate for the money to help her family – that she agrees.

Jane soon discovers 3 more of her classmates are also part of the experiment; dreamy party boy Win (Kay Lertsittichai), influencer Cin (Supanaree Sutavijitvong), and nerdy gamer Peach (Krit Jeerapattananuwong). The students become quite the foursome, supporting each other through the first two phases of the three phase study. When one of the group almost dies towards the end of the second phase, however, the group begins to question if all of this is worth the money. If only getting out – and getting sleep – was that easy.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Deep  might remind you a bit of  Flatliners , Limitless , and the recent Netflix original Awake .

Performance Worth Watching: The young cast does their best with the script’s cringeworthy dialogue, but their performances unfortunately suffer. That said, however, Kay Lertsittichai is dazzling as Win, lighting up the screen with his million watt smile from the moment he sits across the lunch table from Jane. Lertsittichai plays the tragic backstory of his mother’s suicide without allowing things to get too melodramatic, and he brings some real heart to the classic party boy role.

Memorable Dialogue: The dialogue is far and away  Deep ‘s weakest element, so nothing particularly memorable here.

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take:  Deep  could have been great. The premise is one that could easily be taken down any number of roads, and even jumped from genre to genre – there’s some incredible horror potential here. Unfortunately, however, the film’s muddy script, bland performances, and strange pace doesn’t really allow us as viewers to fully engage with what’s happening. The German doctor in particular turns in a performance so cartoonish that it’s hard not to laugh whenever he delivers his sinister lines of dialogue, which is a real shame. He’s the kind of character who should be sending chills down our spines, not eliciting eye rolls or giggles.

In addition to being overwhelmed by its lackluster dialogue,  Deep  also suffers because of its dragged out scenes and unfocused side plots. I found myself utterly puzzled by some roads the story went down, especially when there was so much else at stake. Had  Deep  been a tight 90, kept an upbeat pace, and focused a little more on action and a little less on dialogue, it could have been a truly memorable thriller. Instead, we’re left with something overindulgent and forgettable.

Our Call: SKIP IT.  Deep ‘s intriguing premise is squandered by a cheesy script, bizarre pacing, and forgettable performances.

Deep (2021) ending explained – do the students manage to escape?

ending of the Thai Netflix film Deep - 2021

This article discusses the ending of the Thai Netflix film Deep (2021), so it will contain major spoilers.

In a nutshell, this film is all about sleep deprivation in the name of science. The concept is both weird and wrong. We have students who are insomniacs battling sleep. Which should be easy for them? They instantly start asking if anyone is afraid. Well, of course, they’re not because it’s only been one day and you’re used to not sleeping, so why should you be scared? (Honestly, I was shouting at the screen) Also, they’re always about to fall asleep in the middle of something instead of when they’re not doing anything.

There are multiple levels of this programme. So we watch the students stay awake, get injected, get money and stay awake. I was excited to see what happens if/when they fall asleep, and after 33 minutes, still, no one had fallen asleep. One character almost did and started to hear voices and hit his friend during a basketball game, but that’s it.

Then there is a weird pool party scene to stay awake, which cuts to a band playing — very teen, American High School vibes. There’s a cheeky kiss. Probably the most exciting thing to happen in almost an hour. One character falls ASLEEP. It looks as if she is about to die; with the other characters giving her CPR, she gasps for air and comes back to life. It doesn’t really make sense. The four of them then decide to quit the programme. Even the promise of more money isn’t enough.

Then, they all enjoy a night’s sleep. These insomniacs are so asleep that they’re sleeping through their alarms. Now, Jane’s younger sister is on the “dangerous” programme to help pay for their sick grandma’s treatment. Then Jane goes back on the programme. If she can get all her friends to come back and join the programme, the doctor will remove the implant from her sister. So Jane heads and begs her friends to come back on the programme, and they do.

Towards the end, it’s revealed that the kind teacher we meet at the beginning is behind the programme—a predictable, rubbish plot twist. The now five students are stuck in one room, trying to escape. The professor says she will remove the chips and take them off the programme once they have finished the programme. They are afraid they will die, but they knew/thought this before, which is why they left the programme.

They escape. We learn why the professor has created this programme and why she is paying so much — for the love of her life. To bring him back.

Netflix’s Deep (2021) ending

My favourite line is when the professor addresses Jane and says, “do you know what it feels like to lose someone you love? I know you do, Jane” — honestly, that should sum it up. The professor then goes on a rampage, trying to inject everyone to put them to sleep. You’d think five against one would be an easy fight, but Jane still manages to get injected and collapses and almost dies. They all survive. A point is made that no one gets paid for level three. There’s then a montage of them all happy and able to sleep.

Deep Movie Review:  A disappointing film, especially after its strong start

Rating: ( 2 / 5).

Deep is engaging for all of fifteen minutes – the initial part where the focus is solely on central character Jane (Panisara Rikulsurakan) and her challenging circumstances. Up until then, her favourite professor’s lecture on insomnia and all its effects pulls you in. You want to know where this thriller with its theme of sleep deprivation will take you. You are invested in Jane’s insomnia and her obsessive-compulsive disorder. You can believe that she will go to many lengths to ensure her ageing grandmother and her truant younger sister aren’t affected by the mortgage payments falling behind. You want her to be able to finish medical school and put that brain to good use. It is only after she visits the laboratory for the experimental neuroscientific trial do things take a turn for the worse. And, turn they do! Director – Sita Likitvanichkul, Jetarin Ratanaserikiat, Apirak Samudkidpisan, Thanabodee Uawithya, Adirek Wattaleela Cast – Panisara Rikulsurakan, Kay Lertsittichai, Supanaree Sutavijitvong, Krit Jeerapattananuwong  Streaming On – Netflix

Jane’s professor hands her a visiting card belonging to a German pharmaceutical company conducting experimental drug research – participate, get through it, and there’s money to be had. Jane can’t afford to lose the house or let her family down. If one signs up with the company’s Deep programme, a microchip is inserted into one’s neck. The said chip harvests the amount of Qratonin released by the brain - a substance released only when awake, making it the opposite of Melatonin. A watch, which monitors the participant’s heartbeat and shows the amount of Qratonin harvested, must be worn at all times. Once the watch shows 100 per cent, it has to be returned, and the microchip can be removed. The programme comprises of three levels. The kicker in all of this can be best described as ludicrous – the way in which it is conveyed to the viewer. After Jane is briefed on the whole procedure (including the 100,000 baht she will receive if Level 1 is a success), she signs the contract. Before heading out the door, Hans Miller, the head of the research facility, tells her matter-of-factly, “Oh, there is one thing you should know first. You must not fall asleep, ever. If you fall asleep for more than sixty seconds, the microchip may short-circuit, and it may stop your heart. Don’t worry if you fall asleep. This watch will warn you before reaching sixty seconds. I guarantee you, it’s safe.” The disconcerted look on Jane’s face and the mock-concern on Miller’s had me laughing, as she signs her name on the dotted line in just the previous scene…clearly didn’t look at any clauses involving sudden death, now did we? It can be argued that even up until that point, Deep doesn’t lose your attention – not completely, at least. Enter the other three pieces in the puzzle – sidekicks to the straight-shooting Jane – and see your interest plummet. The trio, fellow insomniac classmates at Jane’s medical school, is sketched out of a terribly predictable playbook. First there’s Win (Kay Lertsittichai), a hard-partying adrenaline junkie for whom twenty-four hours is not enough. Then there’s Cin (Supanaree Sutavijitvong), an over-the-top Instagram influencer obsessed with her image and traffic on her page. And finally, we have Peach (Krit Jeerapattananuwong), a socially awkward gamer with powerful spectacles. Add the ever-studious and responsible doctor-in-the-making Jane to this and we have ourselves the oddest foursome ever. Once they find out that they’ve all signed up with Deep for Level 1, the bonding begins. The exploration of this friendship angle is handled very poorly by the six directors and equally numbered writers of the film. Not for one moment do we buy how close they get to one another in such a short span. Their shared insomnia and Deep tie them together, we get that. However, this supposedly pally behaviour is anything but realistic in its portrayal. To complicate matters, the reticent and awkward Peach harbours feelings for Cin.

The film’s beginning has potential, and the writers could well have made it into a watchable effort. But with the plot and story falling away (and falling away fast) after Jane’s first visit to the experimental drug facility, it gets impossible to salvage. One wonders how it takes a total of six directors (many of whom are credited as writers too) to come up with such a shoddy end-product? Panisara Rikulsurakan’s Jane is earnest and believable through it all, and yet the story fails to back her up in any significant way. We see multiple thrillers and horror films from the far east (Japanese, Korean, and Thai) set in the confines of educational institutions. And several of these are quite effective, hitting their intended mark. It’s safe to say that Deep will not be included in that aforementioned list. Watch the first fifteen or twenty minutes before switching to something else.

What's the Story?

When Thai medical student Jane (Panisara Rikulsurakan) sees her bills mounting up in DEEP, she tells her advisor, Professor Nichca (Dujdao Vadhanapakorn), that she needs to quit school. The advisor suggests instead that Jane consider taking part in "Deep," a high-paying medical experiment run by a German pharmaceutical company. For a tidy sum, Dr. Hans Miller (Kim Waddoup) implants a tube in Jane's neck to collect a substance that will help create a drug to keep people awake. A monitoring wristwatch will tell Jane when she's reached 100 percent and is ready for harvesting. That will take several days and, Dr. Miller adds, if Jane falls asleep for more than 60 seconds, she will die. She soon discovers that other medical students are also participating in Level 1 Deep, a few challenging days of sleeplessness. With bills still to pay, Jane agrees to go to Deep Level 2 for even more money, a longer and more tortured process. This time fellow med students Win (Kay Lertsittichai), Cin (Supanaree Sutavijitvong) and Peach (Krit Jeerapattananuwong) join her in trying to stay awake -- and alive -- for days on end. Someone goes into cardiac arrest but survives. After such agony, they refuse to go to Level 3, but are extorted into it. A sympathetic Professor Nichca agrees to help them survive the ordeal, but things go awry. The true nature of Deep is revealed and the four-way friendship is sealed.

Is It Any Good?

Native Thai speakers may delight in having the chance to see a movie that speaks their language, but many moments of narrative sloppiness work to undermine audience buy-in for Deep . When Dr. Miller injects the microchip into the first patient's neck, he doesn't even bother to swab the skin with alcohol first! Surely if the subject comes down with an infection, the whole project could be scrapped. And he only offers as a throwaway, as Jane leaves his lab, the warning that if she falls asleep for more than 60 seconds in the next couple of days, she will die. We are instantly signaled by the filmmakers that even they don't believe in the truth of their story. And the fact that Jane isn't so alarmed by this news that she quits immediately renders her completely unbelievable as a character. At that point there's nothing left for the audience to do but watch how this incompetent story unfolds or look for another Netflix selection.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how the need for money can lead people to make questionable decisions. Why do you think even someone as desperate as Jane is would do something dangerous for money?

The story suggests that students are risking their lives for money until it's revealed that one character turns out to be wealthy. What do you think motivates that character to participate in the life-threatening experiment?

How does the movie adhere to conventions of horror, sci-fi, and teen dystopia genres? How does it differ?

Deep – Netflix Review (1/5)

DEEP on Netflix is a new Sci-Fi Thriller from Thailand. Unfortunately, it’s both rather slow and unengaging. It’s about sleep deprivation in the name of science, but it feels off. Also, the English dialogue is so cringey – but not from the Thai actors. Read our full Deep movie review here!

DEEP is a new Netflix Sci-Fi Thriller from Thailand. The concept sounds strangely familiar and is obviously made to have a universal appeal. Unfortunately, this also means pulling away from everything that could make it feel like a Thai production.

Well, except for the English dialogue included. This is so grotesquely terrible. Especially the lines spoken by the “German doctor” in this storyline. He speaks so slowly that it would be creepy if it didn’t just feel false. I am fine with Thai actors having an accent while speaking English. It’s the rest of the English dialogue that  really  irks me!

Continue reading our Deep movie review below and find the sci-fi thriller on Netflix now.

Do not fall asleep

The main plot in Deep has to do with experimenting on insomniacs to extract something called “Qratonin”. This is supposedly the exact opposite of melatonin, which is the body’s own “sleep drug”. In order to extract this, a group of medical students agree to be part of a medical trial for the German pharmaceutical company “Weimar”.

ANOTHER MOVIE WITH A SIMILAR PLOT There’s already a Thai movie on Netflix called  Ghost Lab  which features experiements >

Basically, it’s all about sleep deprivation in the name of science. It just feels off because every scene showing these student battling the urge to sleep (strange for insomniacs, by the way) have very strange reactions. They’re always about to fall a sleep in the middle of something instead of when they’re not doing anything. Usually, sleep creeps in when you’re not staying busy.

WANT A BETTER MOVIE ABOUT THIS Watch the Netflix movie  Awake  where you can feel the characters’ need to sleep while not being able to >

I’ve certainly never been about to topple over and go to sleep while playing basketball. I have, however, battled the urge to sleep while watching a bad movie. Speaking of this, I am sorry to say that Deep  is a rather slow and unengaging movie. The actors are given flat characters to portray and it is way too slow-paced.

Deep – Netflix Review – Thai Sci-fi Thriller

You can watch the Thai movie Deep  on Netflix!

The Thai Netflix movie  Deep  has a whopping five (5!) directors attached, which is a  huge  red flag. The directors are Sita Likitvanichkul, Jetarin Ratanaserikiat, Apirak Samudkidpisan, Thanabodee Uawithya, and Adirek Wattaleela. On top of that, there are six screenwriters on board as well. Four of the directors along with Kittitat Nokngam and Wisit Sasanatieng.

OTHER THAI PRODUCTIONS ON NETFLIX If you’re curious about some of the better Thai productions on Netflix, then there’s the supernatural Netflix thriller series  The Stranded  (read our season 1 review here) . Also, the visually stunning horror movie  Inhuman Kiss  (review here) .

I always like checking out Asian genre films on Netflix. Usually, you’ll stumble upon something fresh and interesting rather often. Unfortunately, Deep is not one of those times. But hey, maybe that’s just my experience. If you’ve enjoyed other genre films from Thailand, then you should definitely give it a shot.

Deep  is out on Netflix from July 16, 2021.

Directors: Sita Likitvanichkul, Jetarin Ratanaserikiat, Apirak Samudkitpaisan, Thanabodee Uawithya, Adirek Wattaleela Screenwriters: Wisit Sasanatieng, Sita Likitvanichkul, Jetarin Ratanaserikiat, Apirak Samudkitpaisan, Thanabodee Uawithya, Kittitat Nokgnam Stars: Panisara Rikulsurakan, Kay Lertsittichai, Supanaree Sutavijitvong, Krit Jeerapattananuwong

Chronic insomnia becomes a deadly quest for survival, when four medical students, Jane, Win, Cin, and Peach, are lured to participate in a secret neuroscientific experiment called ‘Deep.’ So, what’s the catch? If they stay awake, they make a fortune, but if they fall asleep for more than 60 seconds, they die. When ‘Deep’ begins to take a horrible turn, the four insomniacs, along with Jane’s younger sister, find themselves in a desperate, high-stakes gamble that will ultimately determine their fate.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!

The guide to our grades, parent movie review by kirsten hawkes.

Jane (Panisara Rikulsurakan) is a medical student who also takes care of her grandmother and younger sister, June (Warisara Jitpreedasakul), while trying to stay on top of her studies. Facing financial difficulties at home, Jane is referred to a pharmaceutical research company to participate in a study on insomnia in order to make some extra money. Along with some of her fellow medical students, Jane soon realizes that this study is far more insidious than first presented, but the deeper into the study you are, the harder it is to get out.

Sci-fi is a genre that can be used to tell a multitude of stories, from big budget action films to philosophical musings on the nature of humanity. One thing that sci-fi should never be, however, is boring. And I am sorry to report that Deep commits that cardinal sin. Sleep deprivation as a catalyst for thriller and horror stories has been done before, but I believe there’s always room for new takes on a well-traveled idea. Unfortunately, the writers of Deep don’t have anything new to add or anything profound to say.

The characters are, for the most part, flat stereotypes of young adults. One is an influencer so she’s vapid and self-centered. One is a gamer so he’s awkward and socially inept. You get the picture. I think the writers wanted to create a character driven story, since the film is lacking in action until the very end, but none of the characters are terribly likeable, nor do they grow and change in substantial ways. I didn’t care about any of them going into the third act, so I didn’t find myself all that concerned when they found themselves in danger.

Another big negative is the terrible quality of the English dubs. The grammar and translations seem ok to me, but the English voice acting is some of the worst I’ve heard since Japanese Saturday morning cartoons in the 90s. Luckily, the subtitles are well done, so I recommend watching in Thai and avoidint the atrocious voice acting all together.

As far as content is concerned, there’s enough drinking, swearing, and violence that I wouldn’t recommend this film to young audiences. Suicide is discussed in multiple scenes, which could be triggering to some viewers as well. Even putting the negative content aside, I don’t recommend this movie from a creative or entertainment perspective anyway. There’s a lot of good sci-fi media out in the world, so I don’t see any point in wasting your time on the mediocre ones if you can help it.

What effects does lack of sleep have on the students? How does sleep deprivation effect their lives and choices?

Related home video titles:

Ah, experiments. They provide a fertile field for sci-fi flicks. Flatliners features medical students, this time a group of whom go rogue and decide to see what happens if they stop their hearts for a few moments before reviving each other. College students star – again – in The Apparition . This supernatural flick revolves around a group of students who believe that ghostly beings are real to those who believe in them. In Source Code , a man wakes up to find himself as part of a government experiment. In this case, he’s able to assume a man’s identity for the last eight minutes of his life – and the point is to use that ability to prevent a terrorist attack.

For a much less scary look at research, Clara tells the story of a post-doctoral research fellow and the free spirit he hires to assist with his searches through the universe. As they map his obsessions, they come up with some startling answers.

Sleep is also fodder for films. The classic film about sleep is Inception , in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays a man who can enter a person’s dreams and steal information from their subconscious minds. In Awake , a cataclysmic event has wiped out all the earth’s electronics and destroyed people’s ability to sleep. Except for one little girl… An insomniac seeks professional help with her fractured sleep in Come True . But the sleep study in which she is enrolled drag her into a nightmarish world of paranoia and terror.

deep movie review 2021

Now streaming on:

There’s a lot of pressure on Adrian Lyne ’s “Deep Water,” a film that was basically dumped onto Hulu after Disney bought Fox and had no tolerance for a movie about horny people. Some corners of the internet have been anticipating this project as a return to “movies for adults,” a genre that has undeniably gone away in the studio production line now that almost every movie has to get a PG-13. And the fact that it’s the first film in two decades from the director of “ Fatal Attraction ” and “9 ½ Weeks” sets a standard for the film that might lead to disappointment. Will the “Make Movies Sexy Again” crowd give some of the storytelling bumps in “Deep Water” a pass or is this going to be further proof that the subgenre is creatively dead? Early reviews have already been divisive, and there’s no denying that some of this feels like it’s been through editing hell, especially the final act. I’m eager to see a reportedly longer version because there’s a lot here that works, including a great Ben Affleck performance and the kind of sexual tension that Americans simply don’t offer in the 2020s.

Based on the 1957 novel by Patricia Highsmith , the genius who also wrote Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley , which should give you some idea of the games being played here, “Deep Water” doesn’t waste time with the “happy days” of the Van Allen union. We meet Vic Van Allen (Affleck) and his wife Melinda ( Ana de Armas ) deep in the misery of a failed partnership. They have stuck together, seemingly for their daughter Trixie ( Grace Jenkins ), but there seems to be little love that remains between the couple. The first extended scene takes place at a party, where Melinda gets very drunk and flirts with a handsome young man she personally invited to the soiree. In a moment alone together, Vic tells the new beau that he killed Melinda’s last lover, who's now missing. Is he kidding? The next day he claims that he is, but the basic machination of the script by Zach Helm (“ Stranger Than Fiction ”) and Sam Levinson (“ Euphoria ”) has been set in motion: Melinda cheats, and it’s possible that Vic kills the guys with whom Melinda cheats.

That’s certainly what Don Wilson ( Tracy Letts ) thinks is happening, and the fact that he drives the plot is a weakness that Helm & Levinson don’t really take enough time selling. Why is this man devoting so much time and capital to his theory that Vic is a murderer? Near the end, he says something about a book, which could be the only reason, but there’s also an interesting beat when Don meets Vic and they get a little heated over how Van Allen made his money—the kind of drone technology that’s used in warfare. Has Vic always seen human life as disposable? There’s a fascinating thematic undercurrent in “Deep Water” about two people who may seem very different but are both users—Melinda uses men for pleasure and to provoke her husband. She says at one point that she does so because of the way they make her feel. These are selfish creatures, two people who give into basic instincts in ways that most moral people repress.

Affleck nails this simmering selfishness perfectly, proving to be a great fit for the world of the writer who gave us Tom Ripley. There are echoes of Affleck's work in “ Gone Girl ” in how he captures Vic’s temperature, the way it rises every time he sees Melinda with a new lover, including ones played by Jacob Elordi and Finn Wittrock . Why doesn’t Vic just give up? The script, especially in its final act, hints at some darker themes that a longer version probably unpacks more but Affleck and De Armas sell this psychosexual dysfunction in a way that other performers would have missed. Lyne knows exactly how to use their physical beauty and sexual chemistry on-screen, reminding viewers how rarely we see this kind of thing between major movie stars. I’d also like to add that I thoroughly enjoy how often Lil Rel Howery keeps showing up lately and being so effective in relatively small parts (he delivers in two SXSW films this year too, “I Love My Dad” and “Spin Me Round”). He’s turning into a notable asset for those looking to fill a skeptical supporting role.

While I suspect the abrupt, choppy ending (with a ridiculous choice for the closing credits) will leave people angry, “Deep Water” had done enough before then to win me over. It’s really a vicious piece of work, a movie made by a filmmaker who is unafraid to see the primal, darker parts that beautiful people hide behind their gorgeous facades. It may not be the comeback that fans of Lyne’s were really hoping for, but it’s a reminder that this kind of movie can still get made today. Even if it may not be tomorrow.

On Hulu today.

If your mind’s-eye understanding of the cosmos is still rooted in images beamed back from the Hubble Space Telescope, then time to meet the James Webb Space Telescope – science’s version of “hold my beer.” Launched on Dec. 25, 2021, after an astonishing 20 years of conception and build time, the JWST is the most sophisticated space telescope ever constructed, as this IMAX documentary from Oscar-nominated documentarian Nathaniel Kahn ( My Architect ) details. At a brisk 40-minute runtime, the film disappointingly has to burn rubber through the logistics and problem-solving stage, but the upshot is a faster path beaten to the dazzling visuals. Narrated by Michelle Williams with a just-right mix of gravitas, wonder, and soothingness, this journey into deep space is ripe for existential musings. No definitive answers here, but it’s a great conversation starter.

SYNOPSIS:

A young couple travel to a remote mysterious island where they hope to rebuild their struggling relationship. It soon becomes apparent that the island offers more than just a tranquil holiday, as it is a place where visitors can swap bodies and literally see the world through another’s eyes.

Age-old philosophical questions of the relationship between mind and body are considered in this compelling and compassionate feature from siblings Alex and Dimitrijj Schaad. The winner of the Queer Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the movie takes on issues of personal identity and gender in a world where nothing is constant. How much of us is made up of our bodies or minds? And is it possible to find a better fit if there is an imbalance? These ruminations are brought to the fore early on in this tale.

On the invitation of her childhood friend Stella, Leyla (Mala Emde) and partner Tristan (Jonas Dassler) journey to a remote island. Once there, the pair learn more about the experimental work of Stella’s now-passed father. They agree to join another couple, Mo (Dimitrijj Schaad) and Fabienne (Maryam Zaree) in a ritual to exchange bodies for a time.

The dinner party meeting of the couples is a surreally humorous delight. It perfectly highlights the different characters of the four, with Mo coming across as a boorish type full of braggadocio. Fabienne is professionally confident and gives the impression that she is in full control of her partner’s excesses. The awkward ‘getting to know’ you drinks come across something like a swingers party. Except in this case, it’s not partners they are swapping, but bodies. Offering them a chance to escape and see the world in a completely new light, the experiment has markedly different results for each person.

The first swap changes Tristan and Mo around and Leyla with Fabienne. The experiment is met with great enthusiasm by Leyla, who has suffered from a long period of depression and feels lighter in Fabienne’s body. This brings up interesting questions of biochemical responses and how much does a body dictate how we feel or act. In Leyla’s case, the result is immediate, and Zaree (playing Leyla in Fabienne’s body – don’t worry it all makes sense!) portrays the change well; she goes for a long run and looks invigorated by the newfound strength at her disposal.

For Tristan, the change is not as happy. In a clever nod to possible complications, Mo jokily warns him of his high sex drive, and that Tristan might feel something of this. Mixing in with uncertainty about the swap, and worries about missing the physical side of his relationship with Leyla, a lakeside dip with Fabienne in the guise of Leyla brings amorous complications. There is also levity and some broad knockabout comedy. This is mostly provided by Mo in Tristan’s body, as laddish and loud as ever, but this time in ‘the Ferrari’ of Tristan’s younger and healthier body.

The high concept of the movie provides a great treat for viewers and sci-fi fans, but also for the actors themselves. A great showcase for their talents, all four revel in the chance to show how a character can be played through body language, tone, and composure. In the case of Mo played by screenwriter Dimitrij Schaad, it is great to see the character brought down several notches when ‘inhabited’ by the character of Tristan. There are also excellent performances from Dassler playing Mo, as well as from Emde going from the insecure and nerve-wracked Leyla to a more determined version of herself when inhabited by Fabienne.

Rather than being confusing, the movie’s story is so well told that it all holds together, and the audience feels invested in the project. Much like the characters themselves, we hope that the experiment will work out for them. An unexpected gem of a film covering a rich tapestry of intellectual and metaphysical quandaries, this ‘extreme couples therapy’ discourse is well worth consideration.

Pearl Jam Dig Deep and Find a New Light on ‘Dark Matter’

By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

It kicks off with a big emotional bang: “We used to laugh/We used to sing/We used to dance/We used to believe,” Eddie Vedder sings on “Scared of Fear,” the rocking opener from Pearl Jam ’s 12th studio album, one of their best and most personal records ever. When it came time to work on their follow-up to 2020’s Gigaton , band members headed out to Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu and worked with versatile producer Andrew Watt, who helmed Vedder’s 2022 solo album, Earthling, and has worked with everyone from Iggy Pop to pop superstars like Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, and Post Malone.

“We’re still looking for ways to communicate,” Vedder told listeners at an L.A. preview of the new tracks. “We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful, and we hopefully think is our best work. No hyperbole, I think this is our best work.”

Take the heartbreaking highlight “Wreckage,” a laid-back stunner complete with empathetic, Springsteen-inspired vocals, and lyrics that seem to be about holding on to a fading relationship. “Combing through the wreckage/Pouring through the sand/Surrounded by the remnants/What we could and couldn’t have,” Vedder sings.

Trump forced to see mean memes about him shared by prospective jurors, kelly clarkson's ex-husband denies 'every allegation' after lawsuit over $2.6 million ruling, cher's son argues she's 'unfit to serve' as his conservator.

Dark Matter ends on a meditative note with “Setting Sun,” a hopeful, transcendently gorgeous nightcap that feels like the band took a drive down from Shangri-La at the end of the day to sit in the sand, and reflect for a while as they watch the waves crash along the PCH. “May our days be long until kingdom come,” Vedder howls. “We can become one last setting sun/Am I the only one hanging on?/We could become one last setting sun/Or be the sun at the break of dawn/Let us not fade/Let us not fade.” But with Dark Matter , the band has rarely sounded more essential.

'Rust' armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed draws maximum 18-month sentence

April 15 (UPI) -- Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed received an 18-month prison sentence in a New Mexico court on Monday for her role in the fatal 2021 on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

District Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer handed Gutierrez-Reed, 26, the maximum sentence allowable under state law for involuntary manslaughter, agreeing with prosecutors who called her actions on the movie set "extremely reckless."

"You alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon," Marlowe Sommer said. "But for you, Ms. Hutchins would be alive. A husband would have his partner, and a little boy would have his mother."

The judge said she handed down the maximum sentence partly because the armorer showed a lack of remorse.

"In your allocution you said you were sorry but not ... sorry for what you did," Marlowe Sommer said. "It was your attorney that had to tell the court that you were remorseful.

"The word remorse: a deep regret coming from a sense of guilt for past wrongs. That's not you."

A Santa Fe jury found Gutierrez-Reed guilty on March 6 of involuntary manslaughter but acquitted her of tampering with evidence. Prosecutors argued for the maximum sentence due to what they called a "complete and total failure to accept responsibility for her actions."

Her defense team has requested she receive probation, noting her "relative youth" and "complete lack of prior criminal history."

"Today I humbly ask you to consider probation," he said.

Her plea came after Hutchins' friends and family members made statements to the court, including her mother, Olga Solovey, who submitted a video statement recorded in Kyiv, Ukraine.

"Time does not heal, it gets worse and worse." she said in Ukrainian, adding that no one connected to her daughter's death have expressed any remorse to her.

Gutierrez-Reed was the first person to face trial and be convicted in the case in which a prop gun held by Alec Baldwin, the film's star and executive producer, fired live ammunition, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Prosecutors said Hutchins, a cinematographer on the set, died because of Gutierrez-Reed's "extreme recklessness" while working as the movie's armorer, who failed to properly maintain firearms safety.

Defense attorneys said Gutierrez has become a "convenient scapegoat" for what happened on set while others walked away from their responsibilities.

Baldwin is expected to stand trial for involuntary manslaughter in July. He has entered a not-guilty plea in the case. Baldwin has maintained that he never pulled the trigger, much less had any knowledge that the weapon was loaded with live rounds.

David Halls, the first assistant director of the movie, testified in Gutierrez's trial, admitting he was negligent in checking the gun properly and believed the weapon had "dummy" bullets inside.

Halls was charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon and sentenced to six months of unsupervised probation last year in a plea deal with prosecutors.
