I recently interviewed 20 of my customers, all in senior roles at Fortune 100 companies, and asked them their biggest pain point in presenting to higher-ups and even colleagues. What I heard consistently was that it can feel like Goldilocks bouncing from one option to the next, testing to figure out what’s “just right.” Does the audience want deep reports? Sparse slides? Something in between? Like … what?

Teams often come to presentation meetings with vast amounts of backup content just in case an exec wants to take a deep dive on any given point. There’s often a struggle to anticipate every direction attendees might want to go. It’s frustrating, and it’s not efficient.

There are many ways to build slides. I’m not just talking about crafting them well versus poorly. I’m talking about all of the important decisions regarding how to organize them, how much text to use, when to lean into a chart, the best ways to use bullets and color, and whether to include an appendix with additional information. Before you make your next proposal or request of the executive team, use this list of 11 tips for your next set of slides as a guide.

Four Things You Must Have in Every Exec’s Slides

Before we drill down into the harder aspects, the ones where your executives’ tastes may vary widely, let’s quickly cover four aspects that you can consider the building blocks — the basics you should never proceed without.

Start with an executive summary. Begin the slide deck with a tight executive summary that follows a three-act structure. First, start with stating the current realities. Second, clearly state the problem or opportunity your idea addresses and its potential impact. Third, explain how your recommendation solves the problem or exploits the opportunity and the next steps you’re proposing.

Have a logical organization. The arc of the deck — the package from beginning to end — should make sense. If your audience reads only the headline of every slide, the order should be coherent and make most of the case for you. The content below each slide’s headline must support the statement made in the title. Remove everything that doesn’t support your point; as writers will tell you, you sometimes need to “kill your darlings” when you’re editing.

Begin the slide deck with a tight executive summary that follows a three-act structure.

Make it skimmable. Help your audience to quickly grasp the point without getting bogged down in details. Create a clear visual hierarchy. Guide the reader’s eye through the content: Use bold headings, bullet points, and numbered lists to break down information into digestible pieces. Highlight key takeaways or conclusions in a different color or font size to draw attention to these critical points.

Focus on concise insights. Succinct statements with clear insights are everyone’s jam. Every slide should serve a purpose and contribute directly to the decision-making process. Distill complex information. Don’t use 100 words when 20 words will nail it. If you’re having difficulty trimming, consider using company-approved AI tools to help you take out the fluff.

Five Preferences to Confirm With the Person You Want to Reach

Now we’ll delve into what your particular audience does and does not want. If you haven’t yet, start by asking the person you’re presenting to what they generally prefer. They probably know themselves well but have not been asked to articulate how they like to receive information.

Ask how dense is too dense. Some executives prefer detailed slides with comprehensive data. Others favor a more high-level approach. You’re weighing how to balance informative content with readability, ensuring that slides are not overloaded yet are sufficiently detailed to support decision-making.

Confirm the delivery format and timing. Some execs like information presented to them. Others prefer a pre-read of the material followed by a discussion. I always recommend our tool Slidedocs (I’ve written a free e-book on them), which are visual documents using both words and images. The templates help presenters organize their thoughts into a document for a pre-read or a read-along. They are designed to be skimmable and able to travel through your organization without the help of a presenter.

I’m a huge fan of pre-reads and prefer to use my time in meetings to ask questions and build alignment. If your audience didn’t review your material in advance, ask at the top of the meeting whether they would like you to present it or would prefer to read through it and then discuss it.

Find out how much data visualization they prefer. Charts, graphs, photos, and illustrations often communicate complex data more clearly than words alone. When execs can see what you’re saying, they often can better understand the impact of your idea. Does the exec want to understand exact numbers? Bar charts allow them to move their eyes across a series of specifics. Does the exec want to know the shape of a trend over time? Line charts can show the pattern. (See “Classic Charts Communicate Data Quickly.”) Some prefer charts with annotations that draw attention to what you think is the most important point. Others want to make their own conclusions from the data.

One of my clients, the CEO of a massive commercial real estate company, doesn’t want anything visualized. He prefers numbers, only in a table, and only in two colors — black and red. You might think this is archaic. But the fact that he’s clear to his teams about what he wants takes all the mystery out of how to communicate with him.

When the stakes are high, have a conceptual thinker help with diagrams and concepts. If you don’t have one on your team, and when it’s high stakes, find an internal designer to help you or hire one. You can’t afford to have the baby (your idea) thrown out with the bathwater (terrible slides).

Identify which details need spelling out. How well do the people you’re presenting to know the landscape and function of the company and products you’re talking about? For example, if your engineering team threw a slide into a deck about an issue that requires executive approval, do the execs all speak geek? Or do you need to explain the technology so that they will really understand the ask? Either eliminate internal jargon and acronyms or unpack those bits, especially if your proposal deeply involves expertise outside of the executives’ domain.

Ask whether appendices will be useful. When you’re organizing a presentation, you often troll data, read through complicated reports, and even hire external experts to figure out what’s best for the company. Do your execs want access to that supporting data? You can add a document to the end of the presentation as an appendix to show all of the data and source material. This allows the main content of the slides to remain focused and accessible while still providing comprehensive background information for those who want more.

Two Tips to Improve Your Presentation Skills

Getting materials in place is the biggest step. They will be your best tools for selling your ideas. But there are two extra areas to pay attention to as a presenter: how you handle questions and how you use every experience to improve.

Anticipate questions, and practice your answers. Before you have your meeting, gather a small team to challenge every point you make. Invite colleagues you trust to role-play as “a rapidly inquisitive exec” or “the doubting naysayer exec” so you are prepared to present your idea well. They’re gonna grill you, and practicing will help you remain unruffled when it happens.

Ask for feedback after the presentation. Establish a feedback loop with those you presented to. Ask what worked well and how you can improve. If attendees don’t have the time, find people who have had their ideas funded and talk to them about what they did that worked. Advice and some perspective will help you nail your performance even better next time.

How to curve text in google slides.

Grab everyone's attention with curved text in presentation slides

Google Slides offers formatting options to tweak text, photos, videos, and other elements in a presentation. However, it lacks a few important add-ons. For instance, unlike PowerPoint, there isn't a built-in way to curve text in Google Slides. If you want to make your presentation stand out among the rest, use the tricks below to curve text in Google Slides.

Adding curved text is a neat way to elevate your presentation. Still, don't go overboard with curve text in Google Slides. It may create unnecessary distractions and make it hard for your audience to read a slide. Instead, highlight a few headings or text you want to separate from the other paragraphs.

Although Google Slides is available on mobile platforms like iPhone and Android phones , we focus on the web version in the steps below.

Curve text in Google Slides using PowerPoint

There are a couple of ways to curve text in Google Slides. If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription plan, use the PowerPoint desktop app to curve text and copy it into Google Slides. In another trick, you can use a web tool like Canva or InkPx to get the job done. Let's start with PowerPoint.

• Open Microsoft PowerPoint on Windows or Mac.
• Create a new presentation and go to any slide.
• Resize a text box and enter the text you want to add in Google Slides.
• Expand the text effects icon and click Transform .
• Check your curved text in action. Drag the white dots around the text box to resize it.
• Open a presentation in Google Slides and select a slide where you want to add curve text.

PowerPoint offers dozens of curved text styles. You'll have no trouble finding a style that matches your presentation tone and theme.

The best new shows to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max (HBO), and more

There were a couple of slow weeks in March, but the major streamers are off to the races in April. For the first week of the month, Apple TV+ has debuted a new mystery series, Sugar , while Netflix has Ripley , a new take on The Talented Mr. Ripley novel. Sci-fi fans can also watch the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery , which dropped two episodes of its final run on Paramount+. And next week, Prime Video is premiering Fallout , which may be the next big video game adaptation.

But if those shows aren’t what you’re looking for, last week’s new additions,  A Gentlemen in Moscow , We Were the Lucky Ones , and Renegade Nell may be more to your taste. Disney+’s X-Men ’97 is also continuing to show new episodes throughout April and into May.

Netflix , Amazon Prime Video , Hulu , Max , Disney+ , Paramount+ , Peacock , and Apple TV+ have one job, and that’s to keep us entertained by their new original series on a weekly basis. But it can be pretty pricy if you’re subscribed to all of the streamers. If you’re looking to save some money on your streaming bill, consider using the ad-supported tiers , which are worth it if you can sit through a few commercials. Sugar (2024) new

If you’ve seen every P.I. movie ever made, then so has John Sugar ( The Penguin ‘s Colin Farrell). There’s no bigger fan of film noir detectives than the leading character of Sugar , and he’s really obsessed with his cinematic predecessors. John does everything he can to come off like a character who stepped out of the classics and into modern-day Los Angeles.

John also has one heck of a case to sort out when he is hired by film producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) to find his missing granddaughter, Olivia (Sydney Chandler). Olivia’s father, Bernie (Dennis Boutsikaris), and her half-brother, Davy (Nate Corddry), are suspiciously unconcerned about her disappearance. And even Oliva’s stepmother, Margit (Anna Gunn), seems like she has ulterior motives to hide.

Manhunt (2024)

The Crown ’s Tobias Menzies lands the central role in Manhunt as Edwin Stanton, the secretary of war under President Abraham Lincoln (Hamish Linklater) during the Civil War. But in the aftermath of victory, Lincoln has been assassinated, and Stanton now finds himself leading the hunt for Lincoln’s killer, John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).

Stanton had been ready to resign and walk away, but now he feels compelled to see this chase through to the end — even if it threatens his life and his sanity. Meanwhile, Confederate sympathizers and renegade leaders hope to use Booth’s actions for their own gain as the nation faces a crossroads at the beginning of Reconstruction.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017) new

When Star Trek: Discovery launched in 2017, it was yet another prequel to the original series. But even since the beginning of season 3, Discovery has been set even further into the future. And now as the series begins its final season, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew on the Discovery have one last adventure with interstellar implications.

An enigmatic power that has been hidden for centuries is on the verge of being found, and if Discovery’s crew can’t find it first, then the entire universe may suffer the consequences.

A Gentleman in Moscow (2024) new

Only Showtime subscribers or those with Paramount+ with Showtime are going to be able to watch A Gentleman in Moscow , but it’s the kind of show that might bring in more viewers than normal. Obi-Wan Kenobi ‘s Ewan McGregor stars as Count Alexander Rostov, a man who had the unfortunate luck to be of noble blood right when the aftermath of the Bolshevik revolution is playing out in Russia.

Rostov’s life is spared, and he gets a relatively minor punishment of house arrest in a hotel. The only things that help Rostov keep his sanity are his friendships with Anna Urbanova (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and a nine-year-old girl named Nina Kulikova (Alexa Goodall). Through them, his life is changed forever.

RIPLEY (2024) new

The leading character of Ripley  is a lot older than you may remember, but Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) is still a very talented grifter during the ‘60s. Yet even Ripley is surprised when he’s mistaken as one of the friends of Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) and hired to bring the overgrown rich kid home from his extended stay in Europe.

Ripley quickly inserts himself into Dickie’s inner circle and meets his girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning). But once Ripley tastes the good life, he’ll do anything to hang on to it. And Ripley doesn’t take rejection well… especially when Dickie shows him how cruel he can be.

3 Body Problem (2024)

The scientific principles behind an actual three body problem are difficult for any layperson to grasp. But don’t worry, you won’t need to understand all of the science in 3 Body Problem , especially because there’s a more pressing issue at hand. Scientists from all over the world are committing suicide at an alarming rate as five friends begin to grasp a mystery that may change the destiny of humanity forever.

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss returned to TV for 3 Body Problem , based on Liu Cixin’s novel of the same name. It’s not a spoiler to say that aliens are real in this sci-fi series, but the nature of the threat they represent is something humanity simply can’t handle. And all the time in the world may not be able to change that.

We Were the Lucky Ones (2024) new

Hulu’s We Were the Lucky Ones is a drama that begins during World War II with the Kurc family, all of whom are living in Poland. At first, the Kurcs’ relative wealth and success allows them to shield themselves from the consequences of being Jewish during the Nazi regime. But that protection doesn’t last forever, as some of them escape and others are trapped in concentration camps.

The show follows Halina (Joey King), Addy (Logan Lerman), Genek (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), Jakob (Amit Rahav), Mila (Hadas Yaron), Sol (Lior Ashkenazi), and Nechuma (Robin Weigert) as they try to survive the worst years of World War II and make their way back to one another.

Shōgun (2024)

It took FX almost six years to put together a new adaptation of James Clavell’s Shōgun , and the result is a masterpiece. In this updated take on the story, the narrative doesn’t just follow an English sailor, John Blackthrone (Cosmo Jarvis), who is trapped in Japan during the late 16th century. It also follows John’s closest companion, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), as well as their mutual master, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada).

For John, the choice is simple: adapt or die. Things are more complex for Mariko and Lord Toranaga, especially as a civil war is brewing in Japan that will test everyone’s loyalty.

Renegade Nell (2024) new

The last thing anyone is going to think about while watching Renegade Nell is its fidelity to history. All of that kind of goes out the window as soon as it’s clear that this show lives in a world of magic and superpowers.

Louisa Harland stars as Nell Jackson, a young woman living in England in 1705. When Nell is framed for murder, she and her sisters go on the run. Nell becomes a highwaywoman and robs travelers to support herself and her family. But when Nell discovers a plot against the Queen of England, she realizes that she’s the only one who can save the entire kingdom.

X-Men '97 (2024)

X-Men: The Animated Series made Marvel’s mutant superheroes into TV stars 32 years ago, and arguably paved the way for both the X-Men movies and the MCU itself. Now, X-Men ‘97  is picking up where the original show left off, as the X-Men deal with the fallout of the apparent death of their mentor, Charles Xavier.

A lot has changed since we last saw the team, as Cyclops and Jean Grey prepare to have their first child, and pro-mutant sentiment has never been higher. Even Magneto, the team’s greatest foe, is attempting to follow Xavier’s legacy and create a better world for mutants and humans alike. However, there are storm clouds on the horizon as the X-Men are blindsided by tragedy and by a surprising return that calls the identity of one of their own into question.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021)

There’s a tendency for some fans to overlook the various Star Wars animated series as being inconsequential or kid’s stuff. Nothing could be further from the truth, especially in Star Wars: The Bad Batch . The premiere of the third and final season strikes a somber chord and actually lets the audience empathize with the plight of the youngest clone, Omega (Michelle Ang), as she is forced to serve the Empire at their secret cloning facility.

Omega’s clone brothers — Hunter, Wrecker, and Echo (all of whom are voiced by Dee Bradley Baker) — aren’t willing to abandon her to the Empire. However, the team doesn’t have many allies left, and finding Omega may be one of the last missions that they ever embark on.

• Amazon Prime Video

Invincible (2021)

The best superhero show on TV, Invincible , is back for the second half of its second season. When we last saw the titular hero, Mark Grayson ( Beef ‘s Steven Yeun), he had a tense reunion with his father, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), which ended in their defeat at the hands of the Viltrumites. Now, Omni-Man is a prisoner, and Mark is back on Earth trying to figure out how to raise his new half-brother.

Mark soon discovers that his civilian life wasn’t on pause for the two months he was away. There’s always a new world-ending crisis to jump into, but Mark has bigger problems on the horizon. The Viltrum Empire has chosen Mark to oversee the conquest of Earth. And if he refuses to conquer his own world, then someone even more brutal will be sent to finish the job.

Apples Never Fall (2024)

In this adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s Apples Never Fall , Stan ( Jurassic Park ‘s Sam Neill) and Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) present themselves as family to the students of their tennis academy. But they’re not as close with their own children, Amy (Alison Brie), Troy (Jake Lacy), Logan (Conor Merrigan Turner), and Brooke (Essie Randles). And there’s a lot of lingering resentment among all of them.

The inexplicable disappearance of Joy suggests that she may have been the victim of foul play. Through flashbacks, the complicated dynamics of this family are laid bare, as Joy’s children are forced to wonder if any of them, or someone close to the family, could have committed a crime against their mother.

In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon (2023)

Paul Simon has been creating music for almost seven decades, and he’s not done yet. The two-part documentary In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon  follows the creation of his latest album, Seven Psalms , as Simon contends with his hearing loss, questions of faith, and the pandemic.

The documentary also takes an extended look at Simon’s solo career, as well as his partnership with Art Garfunkel in Simon & Garfunkel, which is a friendship that has had some very public ups and downs over the years. But in the end, their beautiful music remains, and that’s going to be Simon’s legacy, as well as Garfunkel’s.

Max (formerly HBO and HBO Max)

The regime (2024).

Mare of Easttown ’s Kate Winslet is back on HBO and Max with The Regime. This dark new political satire casts her as Chancellor Elena Vernham, the leader of a small European autocratic country. Elena is sharp enough to realize that the threats to her rule are mounting, but she doesn’t recognize that her grasp on sanity is rapidly decreasing.

To hold on to her power, Elena takes a former soldier, Herbert Zubak ( Amsterdam ‘s Matthias Schoenaerts), as her top advisor. Unfortunately for Elena, Herbert’s not much more stable than she is, and her choices may ultimately bring down her regime before the end of the year.

Tokyo Vice (2022)

It took nearly two years for the second season of Tokyo Vice to arrive, but the show is now once again taking viewers back to the late 1990s. Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) moved to Tokyo to make his name as a crime reporter. But the more Jake learns about the Yakuza and the criminal underworld, the more he gets in over his head.

Season 1 ended with Jake learning that a woman he knew named Polina (Ella Rumpf) had been murdered by one of the Tozawa clan. Now, Jake, his friend Samantha Porter (Rachel Keller), and Jake’s police connection, Detective Hiroto Katagiri (Ken Watanabe), are all looking for answers about Polina’s murder. But there’s never any easy resolution on these mean streets.

The romantic comedy is not what it used to be. The genre used to be a regular feature at the box office, and we could almost always count on getting at least one good one a year.
