The effects of setting on the hair structure?

When setting the hair good elasticity is essential; without it the hair cannot be stretched into new shapes. The stretching of the hair is controlled by hydrogen bonds.

shortest gap = a hydrogen bond middle gap= Water breaks down the hydrogen bond. biggest gap = Once the water has been removed, the stretched hair is held in its new shape by the new hydrogen bonds.

Stretching the hair?

Hair in its unstretched state is called alpha keratin.

Hair in its stretched state is called beta keratin.

Hair remains in a beta keratin state until the hair is shampooed or moisture is added. Then it reverts to its unstretched state, alpha keratin.

Effects of heat styling on the hair structure?

Heat styling refers to the styling of dry hair using heat-styling tools (heated rollers/tongs/straighteners).

During heat styling, heat breaks down some of the hydrogen bonds.

When the hair cools under tension, new hydrogen bonds are formed that will hold the hair in its new shape until moisture enters the hair

The effect of humidity on setting and head-styled hair

The air around us contains some water molecules; we refer to this as humidity.

The hair is hygroscopic, which means hair has the ability to absorb water from the air.

When set and heat-styled hair absorbs moisture, the hydrogen bonds will break and the style will flop.

Base control?

Base control refers to: The size of the base in relation to the diameter of the roller/tool The position of the roller/tool in relation to the base

It affects the amount of volume achieved.

The position of the roller/tool in relation to the base will affect the lift or volume achieved.

A section of hair that forms a pincurl is commonly described in three parts: The base The stem The circle

Types of pincurls

Types of pincurls include: Stand-up barrel pincurls: Achieve a similar effect to hair wound around a roller, achieving volume and soft movement

Flat pincurls: Create movement without volume

The consultation

Hair Classification refers to:

Type 1: Straight hair (fine, medium or coarse) Type 2: Wavy hair (fine, medium or coarse) Type 3: Curly hair (loose or tight curls) Type 4: Very curly hair (spring curl pattern or Z pattern)
