My Teachers’ Day Celebration

The 5th of September is designated as Teacher's Day each year to commemorate the birth of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan , a legendary educator in his day. A small celebration for our teachers was held on this occasion in our school. At seven in the morning, teachers' day activities began. The school captain gave a brief statement to introduce the event and discuss the significance of teachers and their role in building nations. The ceremony was opened by lighting a candle in front of Maa Saraswati's statue , representing wisdom and peace. The first performance by the sixth-grade children began at precisely 9:00 a.m.

Sujana ma'am taught me English for the first time. She is very knowledgeable and kind and is also my favourite teacher. I played the role of Sujana ma'am in the annual tradition of students dressing up as their favourite teachers for the day. I hold all teachers in the highest regard.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 th September 1888. He was an Indian Philosopher and Statesman who also served as India’s 1 st Vice-President and 2 nd President. He was honoured with several awards including Bharat Ratna in 1954, Knighthood in 1931, and Order of Merit in 1963.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had also served as a teacher and professor during his early career. He was loved and highly respected by his pupils. He was elected the 2nd President of India on 14 th May 1962. While serving as the President in 1962, some of his friends and Students requested him to celebrate his Birthday every year as “Radhakrishnan Day”, as they wanted to pay him tribute every year for his service and achievements. Dr. Radhakrishnan denied celebrating 5 th September as his birthday, instead he requested them to celebrate 5 th September as Teacher’s Day saying “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day”.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan birthday is being celebrated as Teacher’s Day throughout the nation every year on 5 th September. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President of India in 1962, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, September 5. He replied, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5 September is observed as Teacher’s Day.” His birthday has since been celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India.

World Teachers’ Day was inaugurated in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers of 5 October 1966.

Biography of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (Sarvepalli is his family name) was one of the greatest philosophers of modern times. He was born into a middle class family at Tiruttani, a town 64 km to the northwest of Chennai. His mother tongue was Telugu. He married Sivakamuamma in 1904 at age 16 in Vellore. They had five daughters and a son.

His early years were spent in Tiruttani, Triuvallur and Tirupati. His primary education was in Gowdie School, Tiruvallur, and high school, education in Renigunta. Born in an orthodox Brahmin family, it was not early difficult for him to study epics and puranas at an early age. He had a mind of inquiry.         

He did his Intermediate education at the Voorhees College, Vellore and Degree at the Christian College, Chennai , while studying he analyzed the truth in both the Hindu and the Christian religions and was convinced that   truth is the same in all religions. In  1908 he wrote a paper, Moral Principles of Vedanta. After securing his Master Degree in Philosophy he was appointed first as Assistant Professor and later as Professor of Philosophy in the Presidency College. Chennai.

Radhakrishnan was a very great orator. He could critically analyze  and explain philosophical truths. Students liked has lectures and he was considered as an ideal teacher. He often used to say teaching gave him satisfaction and peace of mind.

He was a prolific writer also. His important books were 1) Reason of Religion in Contemporary Philosophy and 2) Indian Philosophy. These books made him world famous and he was a visiting Professor of Philosophy to many Western Universities including  Oxford Universities notably, the Calcutta University, Andhra University and Banaras  Hindu University. While serving in Banaras he came under the influence of Gandhiji.

Radhakrishnan represented the University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities of the British Empire and the  International Congress of Philosophy at Harvard University in 1926. After Independence he served as an Ambassador of India in Moscow and he was the first one to be received in person by the great leader Stalin. He was elected as the first Vice President of India in 1952 and later as the second President of India in 1962.

Dr. Radhakrishnan relinquished his office as President in 1967 and he died in April 1975. He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna   Award.

Ideal Teacher

Teaching is a noble profession. The teacher is a respected person. In ancient India the teacher had a place of respect next to one’s mother and father. In those days, men of wisdom with unlimited knowledge were teachers. Students used to go in search of such teachers to get educated. ‘Gurus’ as the teachers were then called were very much respected by society. ‘Gurus’ enjoyed a lot of respect even with the king of the land. Education  was then limited to a few.

In course of time, education was democratized. Education was open for all irrespective of caste. Class, creed or place of birth. There arose a need for many schools and also for many teachers. We have now all kinds of teachers teaching from pre- primary level to the university level. Among all teachers, who is an ideal teachers?

An ideal teacher to be so called should possess a few special abilities. The students love their teacher as their hero. They would like to follow every word that the teacher says and every action that he does. The influence of such a teacher on the students is so much that whatever he says is considered as truth, and whatever he does is considered to be perfect. An ideal teacher should, therefore, have good personality and abundant knowledge. He should know the psychology of students and also their individual problems. Knowledge is ever growing and so an ideal teacher should always prepare his lessons before he enters the class.

And ideal teacher is confident in his class. His voice is clear. What he says should have clarity. If he has knowledge of allied subjects, it would also help to teach better. He is punctual, neatly dressed and disciplined. His character is perfect and spotless.           

An ideal teacher should consider himself as a parent to his students. every students is to be looked after with affection. He should pay attention to a backward student as he does to a bright one. An ideal teacher joins his students in co- curricular and extracurricular activities too. He play with them, sings with them and is always friendly. The students consider an ideal teacher a friend, philosopher and guide.

An ideal teacher is also sociable. His  dealings with other teachers and parents are always cordial. He is happy and also makes others happy. Teaching is a professional job. It requires technical knowledge of teaching. An ideal teacher is well trained for this job and is scientific in teaching and evolution.     

An ideal teacher is devoted to his work. Only those with an aptitude for teaching would prove to be ideal teachers. It is said that a nation’s future is shaped in its classrooms and man who thousands preaches. An ideal teacher gets credit and respect for himself , for his school and for this country. ideal teachers are honored in our country with national wards and State awards on the ‘Teachers’ Day’.

Expect the education authorities worldwide will implement the 1966 Recommendation on the Status of Teachers, as well as the 1997 Recommendation  on the Status of Higher Education  Personnel in order to bring the working condition of teachers and the learning environment of students up to the required standards ,

Demand that the right of every child to free quality publicity –funded education  be guaranteed all over the world; 

Urge intergovernmental organization and their member states to fulfil their commitment to achieve the Millennium Development  Goals, including Education For All, and to consider education as a public service  and not a commodity;

Call upon governments to plan for the adequate supply of quality teachers to meet future needs and upon the international donor community to give their full support to this;

Appeal for the voices of teachers and their unions to be heard in the debate on quality education, as full professional partners in decision making processes and for constructive social dialogue practices to be developed in every nation and at all levels;

Take a pledge to work with a high degree of professionalism to assure quality education for all children  in the world;

Insist that quality education can only be achieved with qualified teachers who have received high-level initial training.  Have access to adequate in – service training and have at their disposal pedagogical means to enable them to act as professionals in education;

Oblige government to take seriously their commitments to ensure pay and equal  rights for women and to ensure their empowerment in the education setting, in decision making and in the workplace;

Note the role that we, the teachers of the world, have to play in securing a quality education of all children – a mission which cannot be achieved without the full support of national, regional and world’s communities.

Teachers' Day is celebrated in India every year on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan is one of the most renowned writers in contemporary India. He has made significant contributions to a variety of subjects starting from theoretical, theological, moral, instructive, communal, and enlightening subjects. He wrote several articles in many recognised journals which are of great importance. The first Teachers' Day in India was marked on September 5, 1962, which was his 77th birthday. 

Why do we celebrate Teachers' Day on September 5?

Teachers' Day in India is celebrated on 5th September to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was a renowned scholar, recipient of Bharat Ratna, first Vice-President, and second President of independent India. He was born on 5 September 1888. As an educationist, he was an advocate of edification and was a distinguished envoy, academician, and above all a great teacher.

Dr. Radhakrishnan became President of India in 1962. He was approached by some of his friends and students who requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday on 5 September. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan responded, "Instead of observing my birthday discretely, it would be my pompous privilege if 5th September is scrutinised as Teachers' Day". Such a request coming from the President of India clearly showcased Dr. S. Radhakrishnan's affection and dedication to teachers. From then onwards, India celebrates Teachers' Day on 5th September.

As the common adage goes, the future of a country lies in the hands of its children, and teachers, as mentors, can mould students into future leaders who shape the destiny of India. They play an important role in our lives in helping us become successful in our careers and businesses. They help us to become good human beings, a better member of society, and an ideal citizen of the country. What is the Significance of Teacher's Day?

Teachers Day is one such event to which students and teachers equally look forward. The Day is important for the students as it gives them a chance to understand the efforts put in by their teachers to ensure that they get a proper education. Teachers should be respected and honoured. In India, on the eve of Teachers' Day, i.e. on 5 September, the National Teachers Awards are given to the meritorious teachers by the President of India. Even according to our Prime Minister Narendra Modi “ Teaching is not a profession, a way of life ”. He also said that India should regain the status of ‘ Vishwaguru ’ (leader in education) by giving high respect to teachers whom he asked to encourage students to think critically about issues concerning the nation. " Teachers' determination and sincerity will shape the destiny of the nation as they are laying the foundation and the building blocks of the society".

On Teachers Day, students hold different activities to entertain teachers at schools and colleges. These activities include singing competitions, dance competitions, recitations of poems, mimicry of teachers, lots of games children play with teachers, planning a picnic , offering gifts, and at last, they thank teachers by expressing their gratitude.

Dr Radhakrishnan was a philosopher, scholar and a politician and his dedicated work towards education made his birthday an important day in the history of India.
