Importance of Waldain Ka Ehtram

والدین اس دنیا میں ہمارے لئے سب سے اہم شخص ہیں. ہمیں اپنے والدین کا احترام اور محبت کرنے کی ضرورت ہے. ہمارے پاس ان کے سوا کوئی نہیں۔ وہ ہم سے بہت محبت کرتے ہیں. زیادہ تر وقت وہ بچوں کے لئے براہ راست اپنی محبت کا اظہار نہیں کرتے ہیں، لیکن ہم آسانی سے اس کا احساس کر سکتے ہیں. خاص طور پر باپ سخت گیر ہوتے ہیں اور کبھی بھی کھل کر محبت کا اظہار نہیں کرتے۔ لیکن ہمیں یہ سمجھنا ہوگا کہ وہ ہم سے بہت محبت کرتے ہیں۔ ہمیں بھی ان سے محبت اور احترام کرنے کی ضرورت ہے. آج میں اپنے والدین کے بارے میں اشتراک کرنے جا رہا ہوں  

میرے والدین میری دنیا ہیں. ہر ایک کے والدین ہوتے ہیں اور انہیں اپنے والدین کا احترام اور محبت کرنی چاہئے۔ آج میں اپنے والدین کے بارے میں کچھ بتاؤں گا۔ وہ واقعی میرے لئے خاص ہیں. وہ میری زندگی کے لئے بہت معنی رکھتے ہیں. میں ان کی شراکت سے انکار نہیں کرسکتا جو انہوں نے میرے اور میری زندگی کے لئے کیا ہے۔

میری ماں ایک گھریلو خاتون ہے اور وہ سب سے مضبوط عورت ہے جسے میں جانتا ہوں. وہ میرے کام میں میری مدد کرتی ہے اور مجھے مزیدار کھانا کھلاتی ہے۔ وہ ایک ٹیچر تھیں لیکن انہوں نے اپنے بچوں کی دیکھ بھال کے لیے نوکری چھوڑ دی۔

انہوں نے ہمیشہ مجھے زیادہ سے زیادہ پڑھنے کے لئے حوصلہ افزائی کی. میری ماں کو کچھ مختلف دلچسپی ہے، یہ باغبانی ہے. نتیجتا ہمیں اپنے گھر کے سامنے ایک باغ مل گیا ہے۔ یہ واقعی خوبصورت لگ رہا ہے. مجھے باغ میں کام کرنا پسند ہے. جب میری ماں وہاں کام کرتی ہے، تو میں اس کی بہت مدد کرتا ہوں. مجھے پھول بہت پسند ہیں اور وہ کچھ سبزیاں بھی بو رہی ہیں۔  

والدین واقعی مددگار اور اچھے دوست ہیں. یہ ایک دوسرے کے ساتھ بہت اچھا برتاؤ کرتے ہیں۔ میں نے انہیں جھگڑتے ہوئے کبھی نہیں دیکھا۔ یہاں تک کہ وہ دوسرے لوگوں کی بھی مدد کرتے ہیں۔ پڑوسیوں اور ہمارے رشتہ داروں کے ساتھ بھی ان کے بہت اچھے تعلقات ہیں۔

Hadith About Kindness to The Parents is The Best Deed 1. والدین کے ساتھ حسن سلوک افضل عمل ہے

Narrated `Abdullah: I asked the Prophet "Which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." I asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your parents" I again asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, 'To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's cause." `Abdullah added, "I asked only that much and if I had asked more, the Prophet would have told me more."

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud that he observed. I asked the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) which deed was the best. He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Prayer at its appointed hour. I (again) said: Then what? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Kindness to the parents. I (again) said: Then what? He replied: Earnest endeavour (Jihad) in the cause of Allah. And I would have not ceased asking more questions but out of regard (for his feelings).

میں نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے پوچھا کہ اللہ تعالیٰ کی بارگاہ میں کون سا عمل زیادہ محبوب ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ اپنے وقت پر نماز پڑھنا، پھر پوچھا، اس کے بعد، فرمایا والدین کے ساتھ نیک معاملہ رکھنا۔ پوچھا اس کے بعد، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ اللہ کی راہ میں جہاد کرنا۔ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے فرمایا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے مجھے یہ تفصیل بتائی اور اگر میں اور سوالات کرتا تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اور زیادہ بھی بتلاتے۔ ( لیکن میں نے بطور ادب خاموشی اختیار کی )۔

سیدنا عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے، کہتے ہیں میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے پوچھا: کون سا کام افضل ہے؟ (یعنی سب سے بڑھ کر ہے ثواب میں) آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”نماز پڑھنا اپنے وقت پر“ میں نے کہا: پھر کون سا؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”نیکی کرنا ماں باپ سے“ (یعنی ان کو خوش رکھنا اور ان کے ساتھ احسان کرنا اور ان کے دوستوں کے ساتھ بھی سلوک کرنا) میں نے کہا: پھر کون سا؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”جہاد کرنا اللہ کی راہ میں “ پھر میں نے زیادہ پوچھنا چھوڑ دیا، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی رعایت کر کے۔ (تاکہ آپ پر بار نہ گزرے)۔

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ هِشَامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْعَيْزَارِ أَخْبَرَنِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا صَاحِبُ وَأَشَارَ إِلَى دَارِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏هَذِهِ الدَّارِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ "سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى وَقْتِهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي بِهِنَّ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي".

ححَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ الْعَيْزَارِ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» قَالَ: قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ: «بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قَالَ: قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ: «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» فَمَا تَرَكْتُ أَسْتَزِيدُهُ إِلَّا إِرْعَاءً عَلَيْهِ.

Disobedience to Parents is One of The Major Sins 2. والدین کی نافرمانی کرنا گناہِ کبیرہ ہے

Narrated Abu Bakra: Allah's Apostle said thrice, Shall I not inform you of the biggest of the great sins? We said, Yes, O Allah's Apostle He said, To join partners in worship with Allah: to be undutiful to one's parents. The Prophet sat up after he had been reclining and added, And I warn you against giving forged statement and a false witness; I warn you against giving a forged statement and a false witness. The Prophet kept on saying that warning till we thought that he would not stop.

Anas narrated from the Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) about the major sins. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Associating anyone with Allah, disobedience to parents, killing a person and false utterance.

رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: کیا میں تمہیں سب سے بڑا گناہ نہ بتاؤں؟ ہم نے عرض کیا ضرور بتائیے یا رسول اللہ! آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ اللہ کے ساتھ شرک کرنا اور والدین کی نافرمانی کرنا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اس وقت ٹیک لگائے ہوئے تھے اب آپ سیدھے بیٹھ گئے اور فرمایا آگاہ ہو جاؤ جھوٹی بات بھی اور جھوٹی گواہی بھی ( سب سے بڑے گناہ ہیں ) آگاہ ہو جاؤ جھوٹی بات بھی اور جھوٹی گواہی بھی۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اسے مسلسل دہراتے رہے اور میں نے سوچا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم خاموش نہیں ہوں گے۔

‏‏‏‏ سیدنا انس رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کبیرہ گناہوں کے متعلق ”وہ شرک کرنا ہے اللہ کے ساتھ اور نافرمانی کرنا ماں باپ کی اور خون کرنا (ناحق) اور جھوٹ بولنا۔“

حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ "أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِأَكْبَرِ الْكَبَائِرِ؟""قُلْنَا:‏‏‏‏ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ "الْإِشْرَاكُ بِاللَّهِ وَعُقُوقُ الْوَالِدَيْنِ""وَكَانَ مُتَّكِئًا فَجَلَسَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ "أَلَا وَقَوْلُ الزُّورِ وَشَهَادَةُ الزُّورِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَلَا وَقَوْلُ الزُّورِ وَشَهَادَةُ الزُّورِ"فَمَا زَالَ يَقُولُهَا حَتَّى قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ لَا يَسْكُتُ.

وَحَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ حَبِيبٍ الْحَارِثِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ الْحَارِثِ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْكَبَائِرِ، قَالَ: «الشِّرْكُ بِاللهِ، وَعُقُوقُ الْوَالِدَيْنِ، وَقَتْلُ النَّفْسِ، وَقَوْلُ الزُّورِ»

Hadith About Abusing the Parents 3. والدین کو گالی دینے کے بارے میں

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah b. Amr b. al-'As that the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) observed: Abusing one's parents is one of the major sins. They (the hearers) said: Messenger of Allah, does a man abuse his parents too? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Yes, one abuses the father of another man, who in turn abuses his father. One abuses his mother and he in turn abuses his (the former's) mother.

‏‏‏‏ سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمرو بن عاص رضی اللہ عنہما سے روایت ہے، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ” کبیرہ گناہوں میں سے ہے گالی دینا اپنے ماں باپ کو “، لوگوں نے کہا یا رسول اللہ! کیا کوئی گالی دیتا ہے اپنے ماں باپ کو؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”ہاں دیتا ہے، کوئی گالی دیتا ہے دوسرے کے باپ کو پھر وہ گالی دیتا ہے اس کے باپ کو، اور یہ گالی دیتا ہے اس کی ماں کو، وہ گالی دیتا ہے اس کی ماں کو۔“

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «مِنَ الْكَبَائِرِ شَتْمُ الرَّجُلِ وَالِدَيْهِ» قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَهَلْ يَشْتِمُ الرَّجُلُ وَالِدَيْهِ؟ قَالَ: «نَعَمْ يَسُبُّ أَبَا الرَّجُلِ فَيَسُبُّ أَبَاهُ، وَيَسُبُّ أُمَّهُ فَيَسُبُّ أُمَّهُ»

While parents devote everything to bring up the children and brighten their future, the children too are under the religious obligation to reciprocate their parents’ love and care with something even better. Islam lays great emphasis on serving and caring for your parents.

When asked about the deed dearest to Allah, the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him) said, “Offer prayer”. When asked, “What is the next in goodness?”, He (ﷺ) said, “Be good and dutiful to your parents”. From the above Hadith about parents, you can realize the importance of showing kindness to your parents.

Similarly, the Noble Quranstresses upon the progeny to don’t even say “Uff” to your mother or father as any one of them reaches the old age.While Allah Almighty ordains the good treatment of parents, He (SwT) warns against treating them with disrespect.

The following verse of the Majestic Quran, taken from Chapter 17 (Surah Al-Isra) is particularly notable in this regard:

وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا ۚ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ الْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا فَلَا تَقُل لَّهُمَا أُفٍّ وَلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُل لَّهُمَا قَوْلًا كَرِيمًا (17:23)

Translation: “And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.”

The same directive has been repeated on multiple occasions in the Noble Quran.

    والدین پر 10 سطریں:         والدین بچوں کے لیے خدا کا دیا ہوا قیمتی تحفہ ہیں۔     والدین ماں اور باپ دونوں ہیں جنہوں نے ہمیں اس دنیا میں لایا اور بچپن سے ہی لازوال پیار اور محبت سے پالا ہے۔     والدین بچوں، بچوں، نوعمروں، اور جوانی کے ابتدائی مراحل میں ہمارے سفر کے دوران ہماری دیکھ بھال، مشورہ اور تعلیم دیتے ہیں۔

    اعلیٰ جماعت کے طلباء کے لیے والدین پر 3 – 10 لائنیں مقرر کریں۔    

    سیٹ 3 کلاس 9، 10، 11، 12 اور مسابقتی امتحانات کے طلباء کے لیے مددگار ہے۔    

•     والدین بچے کے پہلے استاد اور سرپرست ہوتے ہیں اور بچوں کی مجموعی نشوونما میں معاون ہوتے ہیں۔    
•     والدین کی بے ساختہ اور پُرسکون محبت کا کسی اور لگاؤ ​​سے موازنہ نہیں کیا جا سکتا۔

Gold Bar Bob Menendez will claim he hoarded because parents fled Cuba — putting family history on trial

N ew Jersey senator Rob Menendez is to launch a “Finding Your Roots” defense in his federal corruption trial — claiming his Cuban heritage has given him PTSD.

The indicted Democrat will claim he suffers from “intergenerational post-traumatic stress disorder” thanks to his parents’ experience in Cuba before he was even born, federal court papers say.

The claim will form a key part of his defense once a jury is sworn in at Manhattan federal court, where jury selection began Monday.

Menendez, 70, is accused of 16 criminal counts, including wire fraud, extortion, obstruction of justice, and conspiring to act as a foreign agent for Qatar and Egypt — with prosecutors saying he was bribed with gold bars, nearly $500,000 in cash and a luxury Mercedes convertible.

The senator is accused of stashing the spoils in the Englewood Cliffs, NJ, home he shares with his second wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, who he married in 2020 and who is also indicted but will go on trial separately in July.

Menendez, Arslanian and their co-defendants, New Jersey businessmen Fred Daibes and Wael Hanna all vehemently deny all charges. If found guilty he would face expulsion from the Senate and a sentence of up to 200 years.

US District Judge Sidney Stein warned potential jurors Monday that the trial is likely to take up to seven weeks.

It is unclear if Menendez himself will take the stand but he has already revealed parts of his potential plan to secure an acquittal.

Jurors are expected to hear from at least two expert witnesses who are poised to testify that his parents fleeing Cuba in the early 1950s shaped Menendez’s life — even though he was born in New York in 1954.

Psychiatrist Karen Rosenbaum , one of the two expert witnesses, is expected to testify that Menendez experienced two “significant traumatic events” that led to “intergenerational post traumatic stress disorder,” court papers say.

The events related to Menendez’s family’s “experience as refugees, who had their funds confiscated by the Cuban government and were left with only a small amount of cash that they had stashed away in their home,” court papers say.

But Menendez himself has offered apparently shifting accounts of why his parents — both now dead — left Cuba.

While he was a rising political star in Union City, NJ, in 1980, he told the Jersey Journal that his father, Mario, was a government minister in Cuba who moved to the US when he foresaw political trouble in pre-revolutionary Cuba.

But in 2014 he told the Jewish Standard that it was his mother who pushed to leave, and said nothing about his family being politically connected.

In the 2014 interview he claimed his parents were “ordinary working people” and that his father ran a factory for a New York-based necktie manufacturer.

Menendez said his father was hesitant to leave, but Evangelina, who already had two young children, was determined to leave, several years before revolutionary Fidel Castro came to power and began expropriating local companies.

“My mother didn’t like [Fulgencio] Batista,” he said, referring to the dictator who took over in 1952. “She didn’t like what she saw in the mountains, with the cattle barons, and she didn’t like what she was afraid was coming.

 “They didn’t have much – but what they had was in Cuba. And she said, ‘Either you come with us or we leave you behind.’”

Neither account said his parents’ cash had been taken. Public documents confirm that his mother, Evangelina Lopez Menendez, whom he has often described as an impoverished immigrant, left Cuba in the early 1950s.

The potential defense means prosecutors will have to dig down into Menendez’s origin story if he sticks with the plan to use it, a legal expert at the University of Chicago Law School told The Post.

“I’m sure that the government is going to want to prove that everything Menendez is saying is correct,” said Sharon Fairley, a professor of practice at the law school.

Menendez has also indicated he could claim that he is traumatized by his father’s death. In court documents, his attorneys said that Mario, “a compulsive gambler,” committed suicide when Menendez decided to stop paying his gambling debts.

The combination of his parents fleeing Cuba and his father’s gambling led him to stockpile cash at home as a “coping mechanism” to his “fear of scarcity,” he has said he may argue.

According to public records, a man named Mario Menendez died in Hoboken on June 1, 1978 when he was 63 years old.

Fairley said that Menendez’s lawyers are using the trauma defense likely to prove that he did not have evil or corrupt intentions when he hoarded the cash or allegedly accepted bribes.

Menendez may also blame his wife for introducing him to their co-defendants, according to court documents unsealed last month. Her attorneys did not respond to a request for comment when the documents were unsealed.

He may argue that his wife “withheld information,” leading him to believe that nothing illegal took place when they accepted the gold bars and cash in exchange for political favors.

Menendez last faced a federal corruption trial in 2017, accused of taking lavish trips to the Caribbean on the private plane of benefactor Salmon Melgen, a Palm Beach eye doctor, who was also indicted on bribery and corruption charges.

The case ended in a mistrial, and the Department of Justice  dropped the charges  after the Supreme Court narrowed the definition of bribing a public official. Melgen was separately convicted of Medicare fraud and later pardoned by then Pres. Donald Trump.

Why the Campus Protests Are So Troubling

Readers have been asking me, and I have been asking myself of late, how I feel about the campus demonstrations to stop the war in Gaza. Anyone reading this column since Oct. 7 knows that my focus has been on events on the ground in the Middle East, but this phenomenon has become too big to ignore. In short: I find the whole thing very troubling, because the dominant messages from the loudest voices and many placards reject important truths about how this latest Gaza war started and what will be required to bring it to a fair and sustainable conclusion.

My problem is not that the protests in general are “antisemitic” — I would not use that word to describe them, and indeed, I am deeply uncomfortable as a Jew with how the charge of antisemitism is thrown about on the Israel-Palestine issue. My problem is that I am a hardheaded pragmatist who lived in Beirut and Jerusalem, cares about people on all sides and knows one thing above all from my decades in the region: The only just and workable solution to this issue is two nation-states for two indigenous peoples.

If you are for that, whatever your religion, nationality or politics, you’re part of the solution. If you are not for that, you’re part of the problem.

And from everything I have read and watched, too many of these protests have become part of the problem — for three key reasons.

First, they are virtually all about stopping Israel’s shameful behavior in killing so many Palestinian civilians in its pursuit of Hamas fighters, while giving a free pass to Hamas’s shameful breaking of the cease-fire that existed on Oct. 7. On that morning, Hamas launched an invasion in which it murdered Israeli parents in front of their children, children in front of their parents — documenting it on GoPro cameras — raped Israeli women and kidnapped or killed everyone they could get their hands on, from little kids to sick grandparents.

Again, you can be — and should be — appalled at Israel’s response: bombing everything in its path in Gaza so disproportionately that thousands of children have been killed, maimed and orphaned . But if you refuse to acknowledge what Hamas did to trigger this — not to justify what Israel has done, but to explain how the Jewish state could inflict so much suffering on Palestinian men, women and children in reverse — you’re just another partisan throwing another partisan log on the fire. By giving Hamas a pass, the protests have put the onus on Israel to such a degree that its very existence is a target for some students, while Hamas’s murderous behavior is passed off as a praiseworthy adventure in decolonization .

Second, when people chant slogans like “liberate Palestine” and “from the river to the sea,” they are essentially calling for the erasure of the state of Israel, not a two-state solution. They are arguing that the Jewish people have no right to self-determination or self-defense. I don’t believe that about Jews, and I don’t believe that about Palestinians. I believe in a two-state solution in which Israel, in return for security guarantees, withdraws from the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Arab areas of East Jerusalem, and a demilitarized Palestinian state that accepts the principle of two states for two peoples is established in those territories occupied in 1967.

I believe in that so strongly that the thing I am most proud of in my 45-year career is my interview in February 2002 with the Saudi crown prince, Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, in which he, for the first time, called on the entire Arab League to offer full peace and normalization of relations with Israel in exchange for full withdrawal to the 1967 lines — a call that led the Arab League to hold a peace conference the next month, on March 27 and 28, in Beirut to do just that. It was called the Arab Peace Initiative .

And do you know what Hamas’s response was to that first pan-Arab peace initiative for a two-state solution? I’ll let CNN tell you . Here’s its report from Israel on the evening of March 27, 2002, right after the Arab League peace summit opened:

NETANYA, Israel — A suicide bomber killed at least 19 people and injured 172 at a popular seaside hotel Wednesday, the start of the Jewish religious holiday of Passover. At least 48 of the injured were described as “severely wounded.” The bombing occurred in a crowded dining room at the Park Hotel, a coastal resort, during the traditional meal marking the start of Passover. … The Palestinian group Hamas, an Islamic fundamentalist group labeled a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Yes, that was Hamas’s response to the Arab peace initiative of two nation-states for two peoples: blowing up a Passover Seder in Israel.

Hey, Friedman, but what about all the violence that Israeli settlers perpetrated against Palestinians and how Bibi Netanyahu deliberately built up Hamas and undermined the Palestinian Authority, which embraced Oslo?

Answer: That violence and those Netanyahu actions are awful and harmful to a two-state solution as well. That is why I am intensely both anti-Hamas and anti-Netanyahu. And if you oppose just one and not also the other, you should reflect a little more on what you are shouting at your protest or your anti-protest. Because no one has done more to harm the prospects of a two-state solution than the codependent Hamas and Netanyahu factions.

Hamas is not against the post-1967 occupation. It is against the existence of a Jewish state and believes there should be an Islamic state between the river and the sea. When protests on college campuses ignore that, they are part of the problem. Just as much as Israel supporters who ignore the fact that the far-right members in Netanyahu’s own coalition government are for a Jewish state from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. How do I know? Because Netanyahu wrote it into the coalition agreemen t between himself and his far-right partners.

The third reason that these protests have become part of the problem is that they ignore the view of many Palestinians in Gaza who detest Hamas’s autocracy. These Palestinians are enraged by precisely what these student demonstrations ignore: Hamas launched this war without permission from the Gazan population and without preparation for Gazans to protect themselves when Hamas knew that a brutal Israeli response would follow. In fact, a Hamas official said at the start of the war that its tunnels were for only its fighters, not civilians.

That is not to excuse Israel in the least for its excesses, but, again, it is also not to give Hamas a pass for inviting them.

My view: Hamas was ready to sacrifice thousands of Gazan civilians to win the support of the next global generation on TikTok. And it worked. But one reason it worked was a lack of critical thinking by too many in that generation — the result of a campus culture that has become way too much about what to think and not how to think.

I highly recommend a few different articles about how angry Gazans are at Hamas for starting this war without any goal in mind other than the fruitless task of trying to destroy Israel so Hamas’s leader, Yahya Sinwar, could get his personal revenge.

I was particularly struck by a piece in The National, a newspaper in Abu Dhabi, by Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, a Palestinian American raised in Gaza. The headline is: “Israel’s War Has Killed 31 Members of My Family, Yet It’s Vital to Speak Out Against Hamas.” Alkhatib placed Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack in the context of the rising protests against its inept and autocrat rule that have broken out periodically in Gaza since 2019, under the banner of “We Want to Live.”

Wrote Alkhatib, a political analyst who is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council: “Having grown up in Gaza, I experienced Hamas’s rise to power and their gradual grip over the Strip and Palestinian politics and society, hiding behind a resistance narrative and using extremist politics to sabotage prospects for a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Israel. Months before Oct. 7, tens of thousands of Gazans protested in the streets in defiance of Hamas, just as they had in 2019 and 2017.”

Alkhatib added that the “‘We Want to Live’ protest movement decried living conditions and unemployment in Gaza, as well as the lack of a political horizon for meaningful change in the territory’s realities and opportunities. Hamas’s regime consisted of a criminal and despotic enterprise that used Gaza as a haven for the group’s members and affiliates and turned Palestinians there into aid-dependent subjects reliant on the international community” and turned Gaza into “a ‘resistance citadel’ that was part of a nefarious regional alliance with Iran.”

A campus with critical thinkers might have had a teach-in on the central lawn on that subject, not just on the violence of Israeli settlers.

Against this backdrop, we are seeing college presidents at places like Rutgers and Northwestern agree to some of the demands by students to end their protests. As NPR summarized them, the “demands vary by school, though they generally call for an end to the Israel-Hamas war, disclosures of institutional investments and divestment from companies with ties to Israel or that otherwise profit from its military operation in Gaza.”

What Palestinians and Israelis need most now are not performative gestures of disinvestment but real gestures of impactful investment, not the threat of a deeper war in Rafah but a way to build more partners for peace. Invest in groups that promote Arab-Jewish understanding, like the Abraham Initiatives or the New Israel Fund. Invest in management skills capacity-building for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, like the wonderful Education for Employment network or Anera, that will help a new generation to take over the Palestinian Authority and build strong, noncorrupt institutions to run a Palestinian state.

This is not a time for exclusionary thinking. It is a time for complexity thinking and pragmatic thinking: How do we get to two nation-states for two indigenous peoples? If you want to make a difference and not just make a point, stand for that, work for that, reject anyone who rejects it and give a hug to anyone who embraces it.
