Extend or change the conditions on your work permit: After you apply

  • 1. About the process
  • 2. Who can apply
  • 3. How to apply
  • 4. After you apply
  • 5. What to do if your permit expired
  • 6. Changing jobs or employers
  • 7. If you want to travel outside of Canada

Processing time

We couldn't load the data. try again., after you apply, if you applied online to extend or change your work permit.

After you apply online, we’ll send you a letter in your account (WP-EXT except PGWP) that you can use as proof that you’re authorized to keep working, if you’re eligible .

  • You can print this letter or show it with your current work permit.
  • You can keep working past the expiry date on the letter until we process your application if the conditions are the same as on your original work permit.

Some applicants won’t receive a proof of authorized work letter

You’re not eligible to receive a letter (WP-EXT except PGWP) that proves you’re authorized to work if you

  • applied for an extension to your work permit after your work permit expired
  • applied for your first work permit in Canada

Why there’s an expiry date on the letter

Your letter automatically lists an expiry date that’s 180 days from the date we receive your application. The letter expires in 180 days because

  • it’s the service standard to process this type of application
  • an expiry date helps satisfy their concerns about your status and authorization to work in Canada

If we don’t finalize your application by the date on your letter

If we don’t finalize your application by the date on your letter, you can still keep working until we make a decision .

If your employer or others need proof that you can continue to work

  • you can show them this web page, or
  • if your employer is not satisfied with the information on this page, you can contact us

If you applied on paper to extend or change your work permit

If you applied on paper, you won’t get a letter (WP-EXT except PGWP) that proves you’re authorized to work. This is because we need to make sure that your application is complete and that you meet the requirements to work.

If you applied to extend or change your work permit before it expired, you’re authorized to continue working under the same conditions as your current work permit .

You can show your employer proof that you submitted your application. Valid forms of proof include

  • a copy of your work permit application
  • proof that you paid your fees
  • a copy of postal or courier tracking information

What happens if we approve your application

  • an extension of your current work permit, or
  • the type of work you can do
  • the employer you can work for
  • where you can work

Cover Letter for Work Visa: 12+ Free Formats

The world where we live is fast and ever-changing. We would want to search for better work options in our country and overseas. However, the first thing anyone must do is obtain a work visa to get employment in a foreign country.

A cover letter for a work visa is a document that is pertinent while applying for the visa.🧾

It gives additional information about the applicant’s skills and motivations to work in that said nation.🥰

Table of Contents

What to Write in a Cover Letter for Work Visa

Letters are a tricky business, and what makes a letter good and presentable depends primarily on its contents. While composing a cover letter for a work visa, you might want to be careful about how you begin it.

The main goal of the letter has to be highlighting your qualifications and how your qualifications are suited for the position you have applied for in a foreign country. 📑📋

  • Primarily begin the letter with a formal salutation addressing it to the person (sir/ma’am) who is concerned with the subject.
  • Introduce yourself formally yet confidently. 📝
  • Remember to mention the purpose of composing the said letter, i.e., to petition for a work visa to get employment overseas. 🖋️
  • It is pertinent that while composing the letter, you talk about your job.
  • Describe the job in detail, outlining your position and your work type.
  • Put in the necessary information about your qualifications for the job, and list any other important skills that might be useful for the job.
  • The third thing you need to keep in mind while writing the cover letter is to provide ample information about the country you are going.✒️
  • It would be helpful as it would establish your goals and ideals for choosing the particular country and would convey your willingness to work there.
  • Include all the essential documents that are required and asked of you.
  • Never forget to mention shortly the type of work visa you are aspiring to obtain.
  • Assure them of your pertinence to abide by immigration laws as it would show a good judge of character.📝
  • Be sure to check and supply correct contact information such as emails, phone numbers, and forwarding addresses.📱
  • Finally, while you are composing the conclusion of the cover letter, be jolly and enthusiastic about how you are given such a wonderful opportunity.🥰

Tips on How to Write a Cover Letter for Work Visa

Sometimes following a few basic tips can make your cover letter more congruous and suitable. Below I have mentioned such tips that can make a difference for you while composing a cover letter for a work visa:

  • Personalize

The first and foremost thing while writing a cover letter is to personalize it or tailor it to you, your specific requirements, and your respective job. A run-of-the-mill cover letter would only reduce your chances by making it elementary.✔️

  • Making sure to follow the format

Things like choosing a professional font, making sure of the alignment, and sticking to the rudimentary format are important. If you stray from the format, the chances are very less that the officials would consider the letter important.📝

  • Correct information

Providing the correct information is the key, and never put in unnecessary details. It is very important to keep your cover letter precise, neat, and to the point. 📑

  • Addressing the right person is pertinent

Remember to address the correct person with proper salutations; otherwise, you run a risk of offending someone.

  • Proofreading the letter

Proofread before sending the letter to omit grammatical mistakes and showcase more clarity in your letter. 🧾

  • Show enthusiasm for the job

Finally, always remember to be true and express real enthusiasm and interest in the chosen job and country. ✅

*THIS IS WHAT I WROTE FOR MY LETTER OF EXPLANATION FOR MY EXTENSION. PLEASE GIVE ME INPUT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'VE SUBMITTED A SUCCESSFUL EXTENSION BEFORE. THANKS!!* Application to Change Conditions: Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Visitor: Letter of Explanation: My full name here This is an additional document, explaining my particular situation in applying to extend my stay as a visitor in Canada. I would like to extend my stay so to complete my application for Permanent Residence, as well as to stay with my husband during the process of waiting for PR. My husband and I plan on submitting an application for permanent residence through the Family Class- Spousal. We have already paid the $1040 for the Sponsor fee, Principal applicant fee, and RPRF. The receipt is attached below as an image. This shows we are serious about submitting the Permanent Residence application. I am requesting roughly 12 months of an extension to allow enough time for the wait times that are shown via the VO office I will submit my permanent resident application to. I understand that as a visitor I am not allowed to work or go to school. I will only be visiting with my husband and that is all. If my extension as a visitor is denied, or if permanent residence is not granted, I would leave so as to comply with CIC’s wishes. Thank you for your consideration of my application to extend my stay as a visitor. My full name ********Note about Supporting Documents Pertaining to Proof of means of Financial Support: I planned to submit my husband’s bank statements for the last 4 months and downloaded them from his bank’s website in PDF form. Unfortunately I cannot merge the 4 into one document as they are password protected for safety by the bank. I have submitted my husband’s pay stubs instead and screen captured my husband’s most recent bank statement from both his checking and savings. *after this is our receipt for PR and marriage certificate*

  • Life in canada

Whether you are applying to a job posting in Canada or anywhere in the rest of the world, you must ensure that a cover letter accompanies your resume when you send it out to a potential employer.

A cover letter is that vital first impression. This is the best chance you will get to explain to the reader why you are the best fit for the role.

Before you begin crafting a cover letter, read up all you can about the listed job posting and the employing firm. Including a few relevant details will show your seriousness regarding the job to the reader.

For this, you can check the company’s website to check their policies, vision and mission statements, recent developments, and more.

The header of the letter should have:

  • Your name and address
  • The employers name and address

If possible, address the letter to a specific person; else, you can just say Sir/Madam and address it to the HR (Human Resources) department of the company.

In the Middle

Moving on to the body of the letter, here is where you explain your interest in the post, your skills apropos the job, and your relevant experience. Remember, you dont have to repeat your resume here as the potential employer will peruse that anyway. Here, you just have to emphasize on your skills and explain how they match the requirements. Towards the end of this, add a short note on your soft skills to show your complete fit for the post.

Bring this to an end by stating your resumes attachment and thanking the reader for their interest in your candidature.

Sign off by saying ‘Sincerely and place your full name after that. For a paper copy, sign the letter. For an online application, you can omit it.

Factors to remember:

  • Keep consistency and professionalism in mind while creating the letter. Use the same header for your letter and resume.
  • Keep the length of the cover letter short – just one page. You wouldnt want to overwhelm the employer with pages upon pages of text.
  • Dont load up your application with text galore. Leave blank or ‘white space so that the reader can pay attention to the important parts. For this, you can use lists and headings.
  • Use the same font style and size throughout. For emphasis, use an enlarged size or bold the font. Consistency is key here. Use the same bullet point style throughout so that the reader is not confused unnecessarily at superfluous variety.
  • You must remember to use Canadian spelling in your cover letter and resume. For this, you can set a spell-check in Canadian English in your software.
  • The entire world prefers online applications these days. In case there is a specific file format the employer prefers, you must use that. If this hasnt been mentioned, just combine your cover letter and resume into a single PDF file and submit that. This is standard practice as it can be easily opened by most programs.
  • Name your file in a professional manner. Add your name to your file name.
  • Some employers may ask for a hard copy. Print your cover letter and resume out on good-quality paper and submit them in a large envelope without folding them up.

Sending a cover letter is important as it adds weight to your application. If possible, you should write a new cover letter for each position you are applying for. Also, try to customize it for each company. This will help the employer to imagine you in the role and jump-start the process of interviewing.

We are ready to help you with the crafting of a superb cover letter and resume so that you can apply to your dream jobs in Canada. Just get in touch with us and see your career soar.

I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status

File Online

ALERT: On Jan. 31, 2024, we published a  final rule in the Federal Register that adjusts the fees required for most immigration applications and petitions. The new fees will be effective April 1, 2024.

Applications and petitions postmarked on or after April 1, 2024, must include the new fees or we will not accept them.

What to Know About Sending Us Your Form

The new filing fee is effective for filings postmarked April 1, 2024, and later. If you are filing an acceptable prior form edition on or after April 1, 2024, you must include the new filing fee.

ALERT: Beginning Oct. 1, 2023, we are exempting the $85 biometric services fee for Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status. You do not need to pay the biometric services fee if your application is postmarked Oct. 1, 2023, or later.

If you mistakenly submit the biometric services fee and your payment is submitted separately from the Form I-539 fee, we will return the biometric services fee and accept the Form I-539. If you mistakenly submit the biometric services fee and the payment is combined with a paper-based Form I-539 filing fee, we consider this an incorrect filing and we will reject the Form I-539. If you mistakenly authorize a credit card payment that combines the biometric services fee with the application fee, we will accept the application, and only charge the application fee.

For more information, please see our web alert.

ALERT: As of April 1, 2022, we will no longer accept a single, combined fee payment when filing Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status; Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization; or Form I-824, Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petition, together with a Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker.

As of April 1, 2022, we will no longer accept a single, combined fee payment when filing Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status; Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization; or Form I-824, Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petition, together with a Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker.

Separate payments are required for each of these forms. If the payments for these forms are combined, we will reject the entire package.

We are transitioning to electronically processing immigration benefit requests. As we complete this transition, we will be using multiple systems to receive and process various types of immigration benefit requests. Because the Form I-129 and related applications are not all processed in the same system, we require a separate payment instrument for each of these forms.

We acknowledge that using multiple checks or payments for the Form I-129 and related applications is more burdensome than using one payment. We are always analyzing our forms, practices, and policies to streamline filing and reduce, minimize, and control burdens to submit requests. However, we believe that the advantages of electronic processing to both the agency and to the public outweigh the minor inconvenience of submitting individual fee payments.

ALERT: USCIS published a policy manual update that affects language relating to F-1 students on Page 4 of the Form I-539 instructions. Effective July 20, 2021, this update replaces the policy as stated in the form instructions. USCIS is in the process of revising form instructions to reflect the changes made by this policy update. Any revisions to the form instructions will be made in accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act.

Please bring your application support center (ASC) appointment notice (Form I-797C) to your scheduled biometrics appointment.

If you filed multiple I-539 applications and received multiple ASC appointment notices, please bring all notices to your first scheduled appointment at the specified ASC.

If you do not bring all of your ASC appointment notices to your first biometrics appointment, we may not be able to associate you with all of your pending ASC appointment notices for your filed I-539 applications and you must attend all subsequent ASC biometrics appointments or risk possible denial of your other Form I-539 applications due to abandonment. See 8 CFR 103.2 (b)(13)(ii).

Nonimmigrant visas are issued to foreign nationals who intend to remain in the United States for a temporary (less than permanent) period. The period varies for different nonimmigrant categories. We understand that plans can change. If your original reason for coming to the United States changes, you may be eligible to extend your status or you may be required to change your nonimmigrant status to a different one before you lawfully begin to engage in the activities you want to pursue.

You may apply to extend or change your status in the United States if you:

  • Were lawfully admitted into the United States as a nonimmigrant;
  • You have not committed any act that would make you ineligible to receive an immigration benefit;
  • There is no other factor that requires you to depart the United States prior to making a reentry based on a different classification (for example, a USCIS officer may determine that you should obtain a new visa prior to being readmitted into the United States); and
  • You submit your Form I-539 application for an extension or change of status by mail or you can file online before the expiration date as shown on the admission stamp in your travel document on your Form I-94, Arrival-Departure Record. (There are certain very limited circumstances under which USCIS will excuse a late submission.)

Please note that some nonimmigrant visa categories are not eligible to extend or change status (C, D, K-1, K-2, S, TWOV, WT, and WB) and some can only change or extend status subject to certain restrictions (J-1 and M-1). For further guidance, please refer to the filing instructions for Form I-539.

If you are eligible to file an I-539 application, you must apply for extension of stay or change of status before your current authorized stay expires. Even if you are approved for another status in the future, you will be required to file a Form I-539 to “bridge” any gap that might arise between the expiration of your current status and validity of your future status. Therefore, we suggest you file at least 45 days before your stay expires or as soon as you determine your need to change or extend status. Failure to file before the expiration date may be excused if you demonstrate when you file the application that:

  • The delay was due to extraordinary circumstances beyond your control;
  • The length of the delay was reasonable;
  • You have not otherwise violated your status;
  • You are still a bona fide nonimmigrant; and
  • You are not in removal proceedings.

Your passport must be valid for your entire requested period of stay in the new nonimmigrant classification in the United States.

If your status expired before you filed Form I-539 with USCIS to change or extend your status, or if you have otherwise violated the terms of your status (such as by working without authorization), then you are “out of status.” If you fall out of status, we cannot change your status except in certain limited circumstances beyond your control. Staying longer than the period for which you were granted admission may also negatively affect your ability to obtain other benefits or to return to the United States later. If you fall out of status, we recommend that you leave the United States to limit the possible impact on your ability to come back to the United States in the future.

You can find the filing fee for Form I-539 by visiting our Fee Schedule page.

The fee is effective for filings postmarked April 1, 2024, and later.

You can pay the fee with a money order, personal check, cashier’s check, or  pay by credit card  or debit card using  Form G-1450, Authorization for Credit Card Transactions . If you pay by check, you must make your check payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

When you send a payment, you agree to pay for a government service. Filing fees are final and non-refundable, regardless of any action we take on your application, petition, or request, or if you withdraw your request.   If you pay by credit card or debit card, you cannot later dispute the payment. Use our  Fee Calculator  to help determine your fee.

If you are submitting multiple forms, pay each filing fee separately. We are transitioning to electronically processing immigration benefit requests, which requires us to use multiple systems to process your package. We may reject your entire package if you submit a single, combined payment for multiple forms.

Customers throw trash off the back of a pickup truck as heavy equipment operators move the pile at Hatch Hill landfill in Augusta in July 2021. Joe Phelan/Kennebec Journal, file

AUGUSTA — With the Hatch Hill landfill expected to be full within four years, the city is applying to build an $18.2 million vertical expansion.

At current usage rates, that would give the city-owned landfill another 14 years of use.

But city officials may seek to extend that lifespan even further so residents have a place to take their trash on the relative cheap. Doing so could mean the eight surrounding communities that also can send their trash to Hatch Hill would have to find an alternative.

Megan McDevitt, a senior project manager with engineering firm Woodard and Curran, told city councilors last week that the city’s application to expand the landfill was submitted to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

She hopes around this time next year the city’s application will be approved and the expansion can begin.

McDevitt said the expansion is projected to add about 600,000 tons of capacity to the landfill, where the current remaining capacity is only 165,000 tons and the yearly usage adds up to about 45,000 tons. The landfill is open to residents of eight surrounding communities who contract with Hatch Hill – Chelsea, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell, Manchester, Pittston, Randolph and Whitefield – as well as private haulers. Advertisement

She said the city, as owner of the landfill, has other options to lengthen its lifespan. The city could restrict use of the landfill only to Augusta residents who have their trash picked up curbside by city workers. That would drop the annual usage to just 6,000 tons a year, which McDevitt said could theoretically extend the life of the landfill for decades – as much as 100 years.

But that would greatly increase the cost to Augusta residents. A previous study , which also considered no outside revenue from private haulers, estimated that restricting it to Augusta residents would add $700,000 a year to the city’s annual costs.

As Hatch Hill landfill fills up, Augusta looking at options that could leave surrounding users out

Multiple councilors expressed interest in exploring a middle ground – allowing trash from Augusta residents and businesses at the landfill, and perhaps some commercial haulers to help share the cost. Ward 2 Councilor Mike Michaud said accepting the amount of trash that would allow the expansion to operate for 24 years might be a good target.

Ward 4 Councilor Eric Lind urged prioritizing Augusta residents. “Honestly, it’s our landfill; it’s not a regional landfill,” he said. “So I’d kind of like to reserve it for those people in the city.”

Fees to take trash to the facility have increased in recent years , and that is expected to continue while the cost of borrowing $18.2 million to expand the landfill is paid back.

McDevitt said the current “blended” tipping fee, combining different fees at the gate, is $95 a ton. She said an increased blended tipping rate of $124 a ton would be enough to cover operating costs and pay the debt incurred for the expansion, at current usage rates. The landfill charges the city of Augusta $62 per ton for the trash city crews collect curbside from residents.

The vertical expansion, if approved by the DEP, could begin in 2028.

Lesley Jones, public works director, said the city owns about 500 acres at the landfill and could look to expand onto more of that land if needed. She said the upward expansion made the most sense financially because that could be done as an addition to the city’s existing landfill permit. Expanding horizontally would require a new application and be more costly.
