Tips for Teaching Shapes in Kindergarten

If you’re looking for fun ways to teach shapes to kindergarten students, keep reading!  In this post, I’m sharing my favorite resources and tips for teaching shapes in kindergarten. You can use these ideas to help your students master shape names and attributes for both 2D and 3D shapes!

Teaching Shapes in Kindergarten

6 Tips for Teaching Shapes in Kindergarten

Between letters, numbers, fine motor skills, and classroom routines, young kindergarten students are learning a lot every single day! It takes a lot of engaging activities and strategies to get all of these concepts to stick for our students.  Shapes are no exception!  Here are some of my favorite tips and strategies to teach shapes in kindergarten.

1. Use Shape Sorts for Shape Identification

The first step in learning about shapes is to see the visual differences between shapes. Since students’ visual discrimination skills are still developing, this is an important step to take in teaching shapes in kindergarten!

Pocket chart with rectangle sorting cards

One of my favorite ways to introduce individual shapes is to use a picture sort.  Students look at one picture at a time and then decide if that picture is the focus shape.  As students complete a picture sort, they begin to see the pattern and will begin to more easily recognize the focus shape.

Is it a rectangle? 2D shape sorting activity

Shape sorts can be done as a whole class activity using a pocket chart.  You can also incorporate shape sorts into math centers or small group practice time using a cut-and-paste shape sort worksheet.

2. Incorporate Repetition for Shape Names

In addition to recognizing shapes, students should be able to identify them by name. However, shape names can be a mouthful for young students whose communication skills are still developing! This is why it’s helpful to provide plenty of opportunities for students to practice saying shape names out loud.

Hexagon 2D shape hat

One of my favorite ways to get students talking about shapes is to have them create and wear a shape hat .  When students walk around the school wearing their hats, they will most likely be asked about what they’re wearing.  This gives them a chance to identify the shape on the hat!

3. Teach Shape Attributes

In addition to being able to recognize a shape and identify it by name, students should have an understanding of what makes the shape unique.  By teaching students about shape attributes, you are giving them a strong foundation that will help them with future math concepts.

Cube 3D shape worksheet

There are many fun activities that you can use to help students practice shape attributes, like these worksheets that include attributes along with other information about the shape. These lift-the-flap activities are also a hit with students!

3D shape flip book activity

4. Use Hands-On Activities

As with any new skill in kindergarten, the more hands-on practice students can get with shapes, the easier it will be for them to learn shape names and attributes.  One activity that’s always a hit with young students is to go fishing for shapes.  Just add paper clips to shape cards and have students fish for the cards using a magnet on a string.

Students playing 2D shape fishing game

As students choose each shape card, they can name the shape and then add it to a shape sort.  You can easily modify this activity to include different shapes based on which ones you’d like your students to practice.  Once all of the cards have been chosen and sorted, students can mix them up and start again!  They’ll want to play this game over and over, which is perfect for adding repetition to shape practice!

Find, Color, and Build Worksheet for a square

Shape building activities are another hands-on way to practice shapes. You could incorporate shape practice into snack time by having students build shapes with pretzel sticks or small pieces of cereal.

My Shape Lion Activity

Your students will also have fun building pictures with shapes , then counting how many of each shape they used.

5. Identify Real-World Shapes

Another helpful way to help students practice shape recognition is to identify shapes in the world around them.  This is especially helpful when it’s time to learn about 3D shapes ! It can be hard for them to visualize the three-dimensional nature of these shapes without making connections to real-world objects.

Cone page of a printable reader

For example, this mini-reader gives students the chance to identify real-world objects that represent each shape.  They are able to choose an object that is meaningful to them, write it on the line, and then draw a picture.  When students are able to make these connections, they are more likely to remember the concepts they’re practicing.

6. Encourage Practice at Home

The final tip for teaching shapes in kindergarten is to encourage students to talk about shapes at home.  One of my favorite tools to encourage this are these adorable mini-books.  Students can review everything they have learned as they complete the pages of these shape books.  Once they’re finished, students are always eager to take their creations home to share with their families.

2D shape mini books

When parents see that their children have been practicing a particular shape in class, they will be more inclined to point out those shapes as they go about their activities.  Any repetition and practice that students can have with shapes at home is a win!

If you do show and tell in your classroom, you could do shape themes to match the focus shape of each week.  Students can bring an item from home that represents the shape they have been learning.  This gives students a chance to practice recognizing real-world shapes at home.

21 Creative Ways to Teach 2D Shapes in Kindergarten

' src=

Teaching shapes to kindergarten is part of many standards-based curriculums.

When you teach 2D shapes , you’re covering some basic geometry skills your kinders will build from for years to come.

teaching 2D shapes in kindergarten

Let’s look at how to teach 2D shapes and dig into some 2d shape activities and games to help you cover this topic.

How to teach 2D shapes

If you’re wondering how to teach shapes to kindergarten – then here are the essentials you need to cover.

1. Teach the names

Teach the names of the shapes. You could consider this vocabulary, but they need to identify the name of each shape no matter the orientation (which way the shape is turned).

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - silly shape owl craft

You can always use a fun hook like these 2D shapes owl craft to get them started on learning the names of the shapes.

I recommend these 2D shapes kindergartners should know the best: circle, triangle, rectangle, square and hexagon.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - free shape poem posters

You could easily add some free shape posters or poems to your daily routine until your kiddos know them by heart.

And this is totally my opinion – but forget teaching 2d shapes like the heart and the star (those are almost like “gimmes” in today’s kindergarten).

Remember: if you use pattern blocks for any activities – don’t shy away from teaching the trapezoid, rhombus and parallelogram. It’s an easy way to get extra shape names with what you’re already using.

2. Teach what makes a shape unique

Teach the unique characteristics of each shape. What makes the shape unique?

You can use 2D shape bingo, a hide-n-feel game or even a little mini booklet to help cover how to describe the 2D shapes.

shapes presentation for kindergarten

I made a mini 2D shapes booklet to use with my guided math groups.

I like that students pick up on the basic book pattern:

  • The first page asks a question based on a shape’s attributes.
  • The second page answers it.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - make shape puppets

But you can even create  shape puppets to get them talking about what makes the shapes unique.

Consider using videos as well to teach describing 2D shapes – like how many sides and vertices each shapes has.

3. Teach what makes a 2D shape a 2D shape

Teach what makes the circle, square, triangle rectangle and hexagon all 2D shapes   in a simplified fashion.

I like teaching this when I introduce 3D shapes (we compare the difference) and my students can already name and describe all of the 2D shapes for kindergarten accurately.

4. Teach shapes in the world

Teach real-life examples of shapes. Students should be able to pick out shapes in the world from the environment around them but also create real-world things by combining 2D shapes.

This quick shapes in the world video for kindergarten is perfect before going on a shape hunt. It reinforces a circle, square, and triangle in everyday items and has kids draw shapes in the air.

You’ll find a few more examples of how to teach shapes in the world with some of the activities listed below.

Activities to do

Here are some fun ideas for how to teach 2D shapes with kinders.

There is a variety to pick from that can help accomplish the goals we mentioned above.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - class riddle book

Create a lift-the-flap riddle book with your students. Have them dictate the text and cut out shapes. Let them show what they know to make a class book.

Teach how to draw the shapes – by teaching how many points to draw. I learned this tip from our district’s leading preschool teacher.

Teaching 2D shapes in kindergarten - draw a triangle

Kids that came from her preschool program came in knowing how to draw shapes in kindergarten and I learned this was her secret method of teaching them! {wink}

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - cute reindeer at the window craft

If you’re teaching 2D shapes during Christmas, create a Rudolph at the window art project using construction paper shape pieces. It sticks to basic shapes. I love the finished product.

You could also use this free shape reindeer card activity and adapt it a bit since it was designed for first grade.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - love this

Take the shape your class is having the most difficulty with and let them get creative! Have them turn the shape into something in our world simply by adding details.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - making real world things

Use whatever shape manipulatives you have and create 2D shape scenes or real-world things . Snap photos with your phone and print them as example cards.

Students can try to recreate yours or build their own 2D shape real-world things.

If you only have pattern blocks, try to add in some circles, squares, and rectangles made out of craft foam from the dollar tree.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - making dinosaurs with foam shapes

Speaking of making your own 2D shape manipulatives – this teaching 2D shapes dinosaur activity is a perfect example. Cut your own shapes and let your students create.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - playdough and toothpick shapes

Grab toothpicks and marshmallows (or playdough) with these printable build a 2D shape cards . Students can focus on the number of vertices each shape has.

Play 2D shapes games

Play games that involve looking at shapes in different ways.

shapes presentation for kindergarten

Play this little roll-a-shape 2D shapes in the world game. It’s perfect for beginning kindergarten.

It’s simple to play and students can do it independently. They roll a die, say the shape’s name and color or trace a matching shape in the picture.

This shapes in the world printable board game is a simple way to play in small numbers.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - name that shape free game

If you just need something that works on naming and identifying – then this quick shape game is what you’re looking for. Add a pencil and paper clip as a makeshift spinner.

shapes presentation for kindergarten

I’ve found a way to turn bingo into a super-effective way to work on describing shapes in kindergarten. So check out this describing 2D shapes bingo game that is free.

It’s a classic game that’s easy to share with parent volunteers too since they usually already know basic bingo rules.

Activities for teaching 2D shapes - chutes and ladders game

Here’s an alternate naming shapes game that is styled after chutes and ladders. I think they’d like this format.

Play what’s hiding under the rug . This is the easiest game to teach and play with kindergarten. I love turning it over to pairs of students to play in our small group sessions so I can listen in on how accurately they are describing 2D shapes.

It’s an ideal way to informally assess how well students are doing on this skill.

Teaching Shapes in Kindergarten!

shapes presentation for kindergarten

We started our shape unit right after Christmas break.  Something new this year was that we introduced 3-D shapes first.  Sure we have talked about shapes, but did not have the “real” shape talk until after break.  We follow Math in Focus and they pace out 3D shapes first.  To be honest I was completely surprised and really doubted that this would be successful.  However, like always I was excited to give it a try and I trust that my team of great teachers can always pull our “we know best” card if necessary.  I knew I should have never doubted, because these little ones never let me down.  Of course, they excelled right away with the 3D shapes and actually have picked them up way faster then any other year.  Could it be that we introduced them first…maybe?  Or, it could be that they are just awesome like that 😛

shapes presentation for kindergarten

We also used our 3D shapes to see which shapes could roll, stack, and slide.  This is another awesome idea from  KindergartenKindergarten .  The students worked collarbortively to determine which shapes could do each.  They tested their shapes using a “ramp.”   KindergartenKindergarten  also provides the great recording sheet as well.

The following activity comes from a great K-1 geometry resource, Getting Into Geometry!  You can click below to view the book.

shapes presentation for kindergarten

In this activity students had shapes they had to experiment with in combination to see if they could be stacked.  The kiddos were able to use hands on exploration skills as well as making educated guesses ahead of time as to what would work and what would not.

shapes presentation for kindergarten

Continuing with flat shapes the kiddos used pattern blocks to fill in pattern block puzzles.  These puzzles came from Investigations.  I did not teach Investigations as it was transitioned out the year I started.  However, the veteran teachers had great instinct as what to keep for future use.

shapes presentation for kindergarten

As a cumulative acitivty the kiddos will be writing about and describing each 3D shapes.  I think it is very important that students are able to explain what they’ve learned within their own words.  I feel that I am the same about learning new things…I love to take notes, write lists because it helps with my memory in so many ways!

These 3D shape sheets are PERFECT for that.  You can download them as a freebie from  KindergartenKindergarten  as well.

Have a great remainder of your week!  I will be back soon with our latest close read!

We haven't taught shapes yet this year (even though we talk about them all the time). But when I officially teach them–I need theses packs!! 🙂 🙂

This is AMAZING!!!!

I can't get the freebies to download when I click the pic it takes me to a Chris Brown Youtube video 🙁

How did Chris Brown make it on here?! HA! I have updated the link and here it is too: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kindergarten-Quarterly-Assessments-freebie-317225

Hi Tara! I was wondering… you have your student's names written on their tables. Do you write them in sharpie? If so, how do you remove it? Great ideas!

Loving Kinders

Hey there! I do use a sharpie. To remove I've found the easiest way is to spray the EXPO dry erase cleaner on them. It takes it off immediately. You can also use a magic eraser! 🙂

You always do such beautiful work. I love her shape unit at KindergatenKindergarten too! It's inspiring!

20+ Printable Kindergarten Shapes Worksheets & Activities

20+ Printable Kindergarten Shapes Worksheets & Activities

One key skill students learn in kindergarten is how to identify shapes. These printable kindergarten shapes worksheets and activities will help your students learn everything they need to know about two and three-dimensional shapes this year!

It's so much fun teaching kindergarten students about shapes! Once they start to learn various shapes, they see them everywhere. They'll quickly recognize the pentagons on their soccer balls and the squares and rectangles all over the classroom. It's lovely to see them apply this new learning in real life!

Kindergarten students typically learn about both two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, although that can vary depending on the standards in your state or country. In this post, I'm sharing resources to teach both types of shapes so you can easily find whichever materials you need.

Teach Basic Shapes Quickly & Effectively

If you want to simplify your lessons and help your students learn their shapes faster than ever before, you need to join The Hive!

I've created 2 mini units, each with 5 days of lesson plans to teach 2D Spatial Structure from start to finish, including learning targets, success criteria, and fun, interactive songs, games, and activities to teach young kids about plane shapes.

sorting and describing 2d shapes

There are also video lessons and various activities available on The Hive to teach and reinforce this skill, plus digital learning tools!

2D Printable Kindergarten Shapes

For two-dimensional shapes, kindergarten kids need to know a variety of basic geometric shapes:

There are many ways to teach shape recognition. We typically start by teaching the number of sides and helping students find these shapes in the real world. These are often called flat shapes or plane shapes as they are two-dimensional and only exist on a flat plane. There are a bunch of 2D Shapes Kindergarten worksheets and math activities available in my shop or in The Hive to do just that!

2D Shapes Sorting Mats

These printable sorting mats include a variety of real-life images featuring different shapes, which students then sort onto the right mat. This is a great way to practice fine motor skills and shape names at the same time!

20+ Printable Kindergarten Shapes Worksheets & Activities

2D Shapes in Real Life Digital Slides

These slides are such a great resource! Like any new skill, it's best to connect to what students already know. When your students start to recognise the basic shapes in the real world, they'll start to see them everywhere they go!

20+ Printable Kindergarten Shapes Worksheets & Activities

2D Shape Clip Cards

These simple task cards are a fun way to practice shape recognition. Your students will need to find the matching shape from an image in a bank of images. This helps them get comfortable with the new shapes, and when they're ready, you can incorporate the names or spellings of the shapes in the other activities.

20+ Printable Kindergarten Shapes Worksheets & Activities

These can be used as preschool shape worksheets, or you can incorporate them in kindergarten or 1st Grade lesson plans as needed.

2-Dimensional Shapes Playdough Mats

This hands-on resource will have students practice spelling each shape word, creating the shape out of playdough, and practicing their shape identification skills, too.

20+ Printable Kindergarten Shapes Worksheets & Activities

Give your students magnifying glasses, and have them go on a shape hunt on these 2 D shapes worksheets to find specific shapes hidden within everyday objects. They're great for small groups or independent work!

20+ Printable Kindergarten Shapes Worksheets & Activities

Roll a 2D Shape

These free printable shapes worksheets are a great way to help your young learners get extra practice naming and identifying a variety of shapes. This is great for early finishers or as a refresher for first graders!

3D Object Activities for Kindergarten

Once you're ready to teach your students about 3D objects, I've created two 5-day lesson plans to introduce these prisms, pyramids, and more. Each set is differentiated to make it easy to tailor your instruction to your students' specific needs.

For three-dimensional shapes, kindergarteners typically learn the following shapes:

  • Rectangular Prism
  • Triangular Prism

There are lots of matching activities on The Hive that use the same activity as the 2D shapes but with three-dimensional objects instead. This is a great way to help young students learn these more complex shapes quickly and effectively!

OpenAI's big event: CTO Mira Murati announces GPT-4o, which gives ChatGPT a better voice and eyes

  • OpenAI's "Spring Update" revealed new updates to ChatGPT.
  • OpenAI CTO Mira Murati kicked off the event.
  • She announced GPT-4o, its next flagship AI model, with improved voice and vision capabilities.

Insider Today

OpenAI just took the wraps off a big new update to ChatGPT.

Cofounder and CEO Sam Altman had teased "new stuff" coming to ChatGPT and GPT-4 , the AI model that powers its chatbot, and told his followers to tune in Monday at 1 p.m. ET for its "Spring Update" to learn more.

Also ahead of time, Altman ruled that the event would reveal GPT-5 or a new OpenAI search engine, which is reportedly in the works. OpenAI is reportedly planning to eventually take on internet search giant Google with its own AI-powered search product.

But the big news on Monday was OpenAI's new flagship AI model, GPT-4o, which will be free to all users and "can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time." It was CTO Mira Murati who delivered the updates with no appearance on the livestream from Altman.

There were a ton of demos intended to demonstrate the real-time smarts of GPT-4o.

OpenAI researchers showed how the new ChatGPT can quickly translate speech and help with basic linear algebra using its visual capabilities. The use of the tech on school assignments has been a polarizing topic in education since it first launched.

OpenAI posted another example to X of how one can interact with the new ChatGPT bot. It resembled a video call, and it got pretty meta.

In the video, ChatGPT takes in the room around it, discerns it's a recording setup, figures it might have something to do with OpenAI since the user is wearing a hoodie, and then gets told that the announcement has to do with the AI — it is the AI. It reacts with a voice that sounds more emotive.

OpenAI also announced the desktop version of ChatGPT, and a new and improved user interface.

In addition to GPT-4o and ChatGPT, OpenAI's other products include its AI-powered image generator DALL-E , its unreleased text-to-video generator Sora , and its GPT app store.

You can catch up on our liveblog of the event below.

That’s a wrap! OpenAI concludes the event without an appearance from Altman.

OpenAI says text and image input for GPT-4o-powered ChatGPT is launching today. Meanwhile, voice and video options will drop in the coming weeks, the company said.

Although Altman didn't step in front of the camera, the CEO posted videos from the audience on X.

He also teases "more stuff to share soon."

GPT-4o can also break down charts

The new AI model can interact with code bases, the OpenAI execs say. The next demo shows it analyzing a chart from some data.

It's a plot of global temperatures. GPT-4o gives some takeaways from what it sees, and CTO Mira Murati asks about the Y axis, which the AI explains.

ChatGPT reads human emotions — with a stumble

For the last live demo of the day, Zoph holds his phone up to his face and asks ChatGPT to tell him how he looks. Initially, it identifies him as a "wooden surface" — a reference to an earlier photo he had shared.

But after a second try, the model gives a better answer.

"It looks like you're feeling pretty happy and cheerful," ChatGPT says, noting the small smile on Zoph's face.

In one of the final tests, ChatGPT becomes a translator

In response to a request from an X user, Murati speaks to ChatGPT in Italian.

In turn, the bot translates her query into English for Zoph and Chen.

"Mike, she wonders if whales could talk, what would they tell us?" she said in English after hearing Murati's Italian.

It's pretty impressive.

The video demo shows how it could help with math homework, including basic linear algebra

OpenAI Research Lead Barret Zoph walks through an equation on a whiteboard (3x+1=4), and ChatGPT gives him hints as he finds the value of x — making it basically a real-time math tutor.

At the beginning, the bot jumped the gun.

"Whoops, I got too excited," it said after it tried to solve the math problem hadn't been uploaded yet.

But it then walked him through each step, recognizing his written work as he tried to solve the equation.

It was able to recognize math symbols, and even a heart.

OpenAI's first demo: Talking to GPT-4o

It's demo time!

The new bot has a voice that sounds like an American female, but no word yet if you can change it.

OpenAI Research Lead Mark Chen pulled out ChatGPT on his phone and asks for advice on giving a live presentation using Voice Mode.

"Mark, you're not a vacuum cleaner," it responds when he hyperventilates, appearing to perceive his nervousness. It then tells him to moderate his breathing.

Some big changes, you can interrupt the AI now, and there shouldn't be the usual 2 or 3-second delay with GPT-4o.

It can also detect emotion, according to OpenAI.

GPT-4o will have improved voice capabilities

shapes presentation for kindergarten

Murati emphasizes the necessity of safety with the real-time voice and audio capabilities of the new GPT-4o model.

She says OpenAI is "continuing our iterative deployment to bring all the capabilities to you."

Murati says the big news is a "new flagship model" called GPT-4o.

The new model is called GPT-4o, and Murati says that OpenAI is making a "huge step forward" with ease of use with the new model.

It's free for users, and "allows us to bring GPT-4 class intelligence to our free users," Murati says.

And we're off!

The livestream began with CTO Mira Murati at OpenAI's offices.

OpenAI is going to be announcing 3 things today, she says. "That's it."

For those who want to watch live, you can view the whole event here.

OpenAI will be livestreaming its spring update, which kicks off in less than an hour.

Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, has a global deal to allow OpenAI to train its models on its media brands' reporting.
