A perfect story

The present perfect is a tense that many students have problems with. Most course books provide only controlled grammar sentences where students choose the correct tense.

present perfect writing assignment

This activity leads students into writing a short story using the past simple, present perfect simple and continuous, but in a more creative way.

  • Tell the students they are going to write a short story.
  • Get the students to read the following questions and decide, with a partner, what the missing words are, but not answer the questions now.
  • Monitor well to check they understand the activity. There are no 'correct' answers, they should use their imagination.
  • What is his / her name?
  • What is __________ about them? (e.g. strange / unusual / nice...)
  • What was their --problem last year?
  • What happened?
  • Why have they become so __________ ?
  • How many __________ have they -__________ ?
  • Who have they been __________ recently?
  • What have they been __________ for the last five years?
  • Now the students, working in pairs still, have to answer the questions. The answers should link the questions together to form the basis of a story.
  • Next ask students to draw their characters. This is fun and brings the character to life. Students can laugh at each other's drawings.
  • Using the notes above, students put the story together. They can add more information if they wish but they should not make it complicated.
  • Students then swap their story with another pair to edit. They read the story and underline any errors they notice, or question any word or phrase they don't understand.
  • The stories are returned to their owners who make changes as necessary depending on the comments that were made by the editing pair.

By slowly guiding them through the stages the end result is their own and usually grammatically correct. Don't forget to ask students to read each others stories, they are sure to be amusing.

Present perfect

Present perfect

Do you know how to use phrases like She's called every day this week , I've broken my leg and Have you ever been to Scotland?  Test what you know with interactive exercises and read the explanation to help you.

Look at these examples to see how the present perfect is used.

He's been to ten different countries. I haven't seen her today. My phone's run out of battery. Can I use yours? Have you ever dyed your hair a different colour?

Try this exercise to test your grammar.

Present perfect: Grammar test 1

Grammar explanation

We use the present perfect simple ( have or has + past participle) to talk about past actions or states which are still connected to the present.

Unfinished time and states

We often use the present perfect to say what we've done in an unfinished time period, such as today, this week, this year, etc., and with expressions such as so far , until now , before , etc.

They've been on holiday twice this year. We haven't had a lot of positive feedback so far. I'm sure I've seen that film before.

We also use it to talk about life experiences, as our life is also an unfinished time period. We often use never in negative sentences and ever in questions.

I've worked for six different companies. He's never won a gold medal. Have you ever been to Australia?

We also use the present perfect to talk about unfinished states, especially with for , since and how long .

She's wanted to be a police officer since she was a child. I haven't known him for very long. How long have you had that phone?

Finished time and states

If we say when something happened, or we feel that that part of our life is finished, we use the past simple.

We visited Russia for the first time in 1992. I went to three different primary schools. Before she retired, she worked in several different countries.

We also use the past simple for finished states.

We knew all our neighbours when we were children. I didn't like bananas for a really long time. Now I love them!

Past actions with a result in the present

We can use the present perfect to talk about a past action that has a result in the present.

He's broken his leg so he can't go on holiday. There's been an accident on the main road, so let's take a different route. They haven't called me, so I don't think they need me today.

Again, if we say when it happened, we use the past simple.

He broke his leg last week so he can't go on holiday.

However, we often use the present perfect with words like just , recently , already , yet and still .

We've recently started going to the gym. She's already finished season one and now she's watching season two. Have you checked your emails yet?

Do this exercise to test your grammar again.

Present perfect: Grammar test 2

Language level

Hi , dear teachers. Could someone help me and explain this question? The answer is  "did you go " However, I personally think have you been yet is more appropriate. What is the answer? What is the each thing mean? I am so confused. Please help.

You said you’ve been to South America. How interesting! Where _____________?

have you gone

have you been yet

  • Log in or register to post comments

Hello termobarik,

Among these three answers, the only correct one is 'did you go'.

When the speaker says 'you've been to South America', it's referring to a time period that began in the past but which hasn't finished yet. More specifically, this time period is the listener's lifetime. One of the experiences in the listener's lifetime (which is still continuing now and will include more experiences) is the experience of going to South America some time in the past.

But the question that comes next is not about the listener's lifetime. It's about the specific experience of going to South America. This specific experience happened some time in the past, and is no longer true -- in other words, the listener is not in South America now. Since this experience only happened in the past and is not directly related to the present, we use a past simple form ('did you go').

Does that make sense?

Best wishes, Kirk LearnEnglish team

Can I use the present perfect tense in the sentence below?

Her rude attitude at the party yesterday has made me feel very angry until now.

Hello Khangvo2812,

Grammatically the sentence is correct. Her behaviour is in a past time period ('yesterday') but your feeling is in a present time period ('until now'), so the present perfect is possible. Using the phrase 'until now' suggests that this is about to change or has just changed: ...angry until now but I'm calming down now.

The LearnEnglish Team

Can I use the present perfect in the sentence below?

I'm not sure the toilet I'm about to talk about is the same toilet that you have shown us. A few years ago , I saw a men's toilet in an art gallery which had been taken to an auction and one of the critics at the auction offered several hundred million dollars for it?

Yes, it's possible to use the present perfect here. The past simple would also work in many contexts. Which form is best depends on the speaker or writer's perspective, which is explained in general on our Talking about the past page.

Can I say that I used the present perfect there as the action of showing happened at an unidentified time in the past?

Hello again Khangvo2812,

Yes, that's possible. It was shown at some unidentified point in the past and that act is relevant now.

I need help with such a sentence: "Where have you bought this jacket? I love it!" or should it be: "Where did you buy it? I love it!"

Hello BeataBB,

The past simple form ('Where did you buy it?') is the best form here. Even if you bought the jacket very recently, that action is completed and generally not relevant to the time of speaking.

Understanding the present perfect in English

The present perfect is not always easy to understand and use but don't worry, this lesson will make it clear.

We make a present perfect tense by taking the present of the verb have and the past participle (the third part) of the main verb.  It looks like this:

To make the negative sentences, we put not or n't after the verb have , like this:

To make questions, we just change the first two words around, like this:

You can see that only the verb have changes

  • It is has for he, she and it
  • but have for I, you, we and they .

You can try the tests again if you like! Making the tense is the easy part.

There are two things to remember:

  • The present perfect is a present tense.  It is used to talk about NOW.
  • The present perfect is a relative or relational tense. That means it connects two times together: the past and the present.  Like this:

The present perfect is used for past events which change the present.  Like this:

Here's another way to see the same effect:

To understand this, look at these pictures and read the sentences carefully.

When you think you have understood why we say Mary HAS ARRIVED and not just Mary arrived , click here .

Yesterday is finished and the telephone conversation is not important now. BUT: The fact that Mary has arrived makes it POSSIBLE for John to talk to her. Mary's arrival CHANGED THE PRESENT so we use the present perfect. We put the past inside the present to show that the present is changed.

Here's another way to look at this. Jane wants to have a video conversation with Mary so she telephoned yesterday to arrange a time.  Now watch:

Your browser does not support the video tag.

The important thing to notice is that we say Mary has answered because that has changed the present:     NOW Mary and Jane can talk because Jane has answered.

Here is another way to see how the past and present mix to make a present perfect.

Most languages do not make a difference between the past which is finished and the past which changes the present. English does:

  • We use the past simple to talk about finished things in the past.  For example:     I went to London yesterday     She spoke to her boss last week     We had lunch in the garden last summer and so on.  All these actions are finished.
  • We use the present perfect when we want to say that the present is different because of something in the past.  For example:     I have learned English So, NOW I can talk to my American friends     She has arrived So, NOW we can start the meeting     I have lived here all my life So, NOW I can tell you about this place All these past actions change the present.
  • I have seen that film
  • I saw that film
  • Has she arrived?
  • Did she arrive?
  • Have you been to America?
  • Did you go to America?
  • They haven't talked to her
  • They didn't talk to her

The present perfect is a present tense and we use time expressions which show that.  Look at these:

  • I saw John yesterday Yesterday is finished and does not change NOW so we say I saw John , not I have seen John .
  • I have seen John this morning This morning is not finished so this can change NOW so we say I have seen John .
  • I went to America last year Last year is finished
  • I have been to America So I can talk to you about America NOW.
  • She lost her keys Tell us that something happened in the past
  • She has lost her keys Tells us that something in the present is changing: perhaps she can't use her car or get into her house NOW.
  • I have already finished So NOW I can do something else
  • I finished it last week So you know what happened and that is all.
  • Has Mary arrived yet? Yet means up to now so I am talking about the present
  • Did Mary arrive? means that I want to know what happened in the past not the present.

Here are the test sentences with the right answers and some help for you:

  • I have talked to Mary today Because today is not finished, my talking to Mary can change the present.
  • They left last year Because last year is finished, the correct tense is past simple: the action is finished and does not change the present.
  • Did she see the film last week ? I am asking a question about what happened in the past.  I am not interested in the present.
  • We have started the meeting and it is happening now so don't interrupt!  Starting the meeting has changed the present.
  • I haven't repaired it s o you can't use it now Because it is still broken, you can't use it so the present is changed by me not repairing it.

If you got some wrong, try the test again.

This is the end.  Thank you for doing the lesson!

That’s great. I hope it has been going well.

Thank you very much for your professional lessons, could you guide me to follow your all lessons step by step I Look forward to your reply

many thanks Alex

Terimakasih Alex

' src=

If that means “Thank you,” you’re welcome!

yeah that mean THANK YOU in INDONESIA

After watching your lesson I already corrected 80% for the first time.

' src=

Good job! Keep on studying.

Thank you Alex . Mastering present perfect is one of my goal . These kind of phrases help a lot . I have always been confused with words like already , yet , still . Must they be used with present perfect or other tenses ? Do they have always the same meanings or do they change depending on the context they are used ? Thank for your feedback . See you

' src=

“Still” is the only word with multiple meanings. It can also be used as an adjective that means “motionless.”

You can use still, already, and yet with other tenses, but they’re very common with the present perfect. Here are various non-present perfect examples.

He still believes in Santa Clause. Didn’t I already explain this to you?! All of our luggage is already packed. Even if you fail, I’ll still love you. The internet’s not connecting yet.

I hope this helps a bit.

It is so useful. thank you a lot

' src=

Probably it is possible to use two answers in 5th question of quiz(1st and 4th).

' src=

Hi Promidor) If Chad said “I’ve been at work”, then the first answer would be correct. But he said “I’ve been BUSY at work”.

' src=

“How have you been?” doesn’t work because the answer is about the person’s activity, not their state/feeling. “I’ve been busy at work.”

Sorry guys, but do I get it right that the correct answer is “Where have you been?” The Key says “How have you been” is correct. Or am I hopelessly thick?

' src=

I wish I could edit my responses. So sorry. I made a mistake in my last comment. @_@ “How have you been” is the most common question to ask after saying something like “I haven’t seen you in so long!” The answer “I’ve been busy at work” is a little weird, though, so I understand the confusion. It’s a tricky question. Sorry, guys.

I agree with Promidor

' src=

Have you ever seen any useful lesson like this before?

' src=

Thanks for the kind feedback, James. I appreciate it!

I got 08 ☺ It was so useful lesson. I enjoyed each and every thing of it. Thanks a lot alex.

' src=

Thanks, Anne. Allow me to correct your grammar…

“It was SUCH a useful lesson.” (use “so” before adjectives and “such” before noun phrases)

“I enjoyed each and every PART of it.” (this is the common usage)

Omg i love you alex. ☺ correct me every time. I m so glad ☺☺☺

Omg ! Thank you so much alex. ☺ i can’t express my feeling in words how glad you made me ….

Hahaha alex now correct me from this also ☺

Alex i found the solution that how will i improve my english, which is you stay with me every moment ☺

“I found the solution to how I will improve my English, which is for you to stay with me at every turn.” (this is a common phrase that has a similar meaning to what you’re trying to say here)

Thanks for your enthusiasm.

Thanks Alex. Why have I ever been here until this time? This lesson is very useful.

' src=

Thanks, Nagihan. Welcome to EngVid! If I may correct your grammar…

“Why have I NEVER been here until now?” (“until this time” works too, but it sounds slightly awkward and uncommon)

Hmm okey thanks for your correction.

Alex, have you ever wondered about what would happened if you stop teaching us English? I really hope that this will not happen. Many thanks!

Thanks, Slavik. I don’t plan on stopping any time soon, so don’t worry! Here’s a quick grammar correction for you…

“Have you ever wondered about what would HAPPEN if you STOPPED teaching us English?” (“Would” is a modal verb and must always be followed by a base verb…and the “if” clause in a second conditional sentence has to use the simple past form)

Thank you for correction, Alex!

' src=

Thank you for THE correction :)

You got it! No problem, Slavik.

Hi Alex , Thank you so much for sharing some important rule of present perfect interrogative with us.

' src=

It’s my pleasure, usahu.

“Thank you so much for sharing some important rules for the present perfect interrogative with us.”

It has been a useful lesson!

' src=

Thanks for checking it out, Lucas.

Thanks Alex for this lesson, it was great…

' src=

Always my pleasure, marcos. I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for your constant support!

I agree with Promidor and Cecca that question 5 has 2 correct answers: 1&4 and #1 is more probable/appropriate.

Thanks Alex…..

' src=

Any time, hugowu. Cute pic!

thanks a lot… You are one of the best English teacher. ^^

' src=

That’s very kind. Thank you. Please allow me to correct your grammar…

“You are one of the best English teachers.”

thanks alot teacher !

' src=

Any time. Thanks for clicking.

Please …help me out….it’s too confusing. My question is The word ‘urgent’ sometimes it’s uses an and sometimes not???

' src=

“Urgent” is an adjective which means “in need of immediate attention.”

Please call me as soon as possible. It’s urgent. I’m in urgent need of a babysitter for tonight. I need you to work on this. It’s urgent. Hand it back to me in an hour.

Basically, something that needs to be done NOW.

Hello Alex. I loved the lesson. Thank you.

' src=

I’m happy to hear that! Thanks for checking it out.

Thank You, teacher….!!!

' src=

You’re very welcome, Jakub!

Thanks Alex!!Interesting lesson ;)

' src=

That’s awesome, Luanda. These kinds of messages make my day. Thank you kindly.

10/10 Thanks a lot Alex.

' src=

Nice job! Now put the information into practice.

Hello Alex. Thank you for your lesson.

' src=

No problem, Muad! Thanks for checking out the video.

Okay, thanks Alex it was so great lesson and interesting lesson.I love as like you interested for us.

Thanks, Muad.

“It was such a great and interesting lesson.” Don’t use “so” to emphasize a noun, “lesson” in this case. Use “such” to emphasize a noun phrase. Examples:

such a great lesson such a nice car such an interesting book such an intelligent person such a professional such a hard worker

I hope this helps!

I got 8/10 :(

' src=

That’s still a strong score. The goal is to use this information in conversation. Learning a language is not like learning mathematics or geography. It takes time and practice.

thank you Mr Alex for your supprt

Can you believe? Learning mathematics is like learning a language. It takes time and practice. :) Thank you and EngVid.com.

' src=

I did one mistake, it’s (how have you been?) but I reviewed the video I got it

' src=

Not bad at all. :) Nice job! Good for you for going back and learning to fix your own mistakes.

Thanks Alex for great lesson.

' src=

Alex, thanks for the lesson , it was excelent. I had 10 / 10 in the quiz.

Of course! I love it. I watched it again last week.

10/10 Thank you,teacher)

' src=

Great job! And it was my pleasure.

Thank you Alex. As always it`s great lesson.

' src=

I appreciate that. Thank you for studying with me.

i got 100% . thanks mr. Alex and am very happy to be a member of this class it’s great lesson . thank you very much

' src=

My pleasure, Yusuf. Thanks for studying with EngVid! I hope to see you again soon.

Hello Alex, I hope to be welcom here, I like your lesson, very interesting and I would like to speak like you. I have done the quiz,I did one mistake and please, I would like to understand something.

What is the diffrence between ” Have you ever booked your flight” and ”Have you already booked your flight”?

' src=

“Ever” implies “in your entire life.” You COULD say “Have you ever booked a flight” to ask a general question, but because the word “your” is in this sentence, it doesn’t really work. “Your flight” is very specific…a specific flight that you recently booked or have to book…so the best answer is “Have you already booked your flight?”

Hi Alex!! 10/10!! You are great!!Thanks a lot!!

' src=

Nice work! Now put it into practice.

I got 8 …tq for valuable class

' src=

Nice work. Keep studying.

Great Alex…

It was very useful…

' src=

Thank you. The next step is to apply it to your life.

Wow, what a great lesson Alex. Thank you. I have a doubt: Which one is correct: Have you ever been IN Venezuela? or Have you ever been TO Venezuela? are they both correct?.

If I made some mistake, do not hesitate to correct me. Thanks

' src=

Both are technically okay, but “Have you ever been TO Venezuela” is much more common if you’re asking about a person’s life experience and whether or not they have visited a specific place.

10/10 Thank you for the great lesson.

' src=

Nice work, Benyapha. Keep on practicing!

Thanks so much Alex. It is always a pleasure to attend your lessons. You and the other teachers are doing an awesome job. I really appreciate what you are doing and I thank you for it.

' src=

Thanks, tiger. We all have our own styles, and I’m glad our videos are resonating with English students.

I think this kind of lessons must be classified as advanced lesson

' src=

The present perfect is generally taught at high beginner/low intermediate levels. I think this fits well into intermediate/upper intermediate.

thanks Alex

Hi Professor Alex,

I have a question. The right answer would not be, Have already booked your flight. Instead Have you already booked your flight? I don’t get it. Best wishes!

' src=

You need a subject when forming this question, so the “you” is necessary here. The placement of “already” needs to be BEFORE the verb or AFTER the object.

“Have you already booked your flight?” OR “Have you booked your flight already?”

I gotcha! We need to use the pronoun.

Thank’s!

you are my man thanx

' src=

Any time. Glad to be your man.

Thanks a lot, Alex. It was such a worthwhile to me.

' src=

Thanks, Mohammad. Allow me to make a correction…

“It was so worthwhile for me.”

“Worthwhile” is an adjective. If you want to emphasize an adjective, use “so,” not “such.”

If you WANT to use such, say “It was such a worthwhile LESSON for me.” Use “such” to emphasize a noun phrase.

such a nice time such a good movie such an interesting book such a great experience etc.

I hope this helps.

Wow! Thank you very much indeed Alex.

9 out of 10.not bad!

' src=

Not bad at all! Keep practicing, Rollyabastas.

Thank you very much teacher. I started to learne English.

' src=

You’re welcome! Thanks for checking out my video and for studying with EngVid, Akiralto.

Thanks teacher, 7/10, ;-), great lesson.

' src=

Nice work. Keep on studying, Wagner!

Really nice lesson. Thank you.

' src=

Any time, Marcos. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

' src=

“I got 100.” Past tense because the quiz is now finished. :) Nice work.

Thanks Alex for this interesting lesson. I really enjoyed it

' src=

That’s cool. Thanks for your support and for studying with me.

Thanks Teacher! I got 10/10.

' src=

Well done. Keep it up and put what you’ve learned into practice.

Good lesson. Thanks

' src=

Any time, adessi. I’m glad you liked it.

Thanks a lot Alex

' src=

My pleasure. Thanks for studying with EngVid, hoong.

Hello Alex! Thank you very much for this lesson :) Your explanation is very understandable… I have a question In my country teachers teach us that “when” is not used with “have, has”. Is it correct or not?

' src=

I’m not sure I understand the question, but here are some ways to use “when” with “have” or “has.” Note that you have to use “ever” for it to work, though.

When have I ever said that? When has he ever told the truth? When have you ever done anything for anyone?!

It’s not super common, but it’s possible.

Thank you very much Alex. Your video is so illustrative. Every time I learn more useful things about English.

' src=

That’s awesome to read, Medardo. Thank you so much for your kind feedback. I like the word “illustrative”!

Very useful lesson, although I have only hit 8/10. Thanks for lesson, Alex.

' src=

Still a nice job, Inaldo. Keep it up!

have you ever been in India ?:)

' src=

No, I haven’t, but I’d like to go there one day. I enjoy Indian food; especially samosas. :)

I don’t completely watch your video then I took the quiz I got 9!!!

' src=

“I didn’t watch your video completely” is the correct form here.

That’s okay! Nice job. Now put what you’ve learned into practice.

Thanks for your advises…it’s very usefull

' src=

“Thanks for your advice.”

“Advice” is not countable and it’s never used in the plural form in English. If you’d like to COUNT advice, you need to say “a bit of advice” or “a piece of advice.” Example:

I have two pieces/bits of advice for you.

it’s my fist time here !Very good teacher haha , thakx a lot !! ops.. my result 9\10 !

' src=

Welcome to EngVid, Junior! I’m always happy to see some new faces in the comments. Thanks for checking out the video, and I hope you’ll continue studying with us.

Really good!!! Thank you ?

' src=

No problem! I’m glad you liked the lesson, and I hope you can apply it to your life.

Thank you alex I’ve got 10/10

' src=

Nice work. The next step is to put the knowledge into practice. Try using these questions in your daily conversations or written communications.

Thank you so much Alex. I will follow your lessons from now and on, it was such a fun and useful experience to watch this video

' src=

That’s very kind, Mohamed. Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed the lesson, and I look forward to seeing your comments under future videos.

You’re welcome. Of course I will, it’s my please.

“It’s my pleasure.” :)

10/10 Thank you Alex

' src=

Any time. Thanks for checking out the lesson, and nice job on the quiz.

I’ve been in the USA and Canada last week, not with an organized tour but simply renting a car and wandering in several States. It has been simply stunning and amazing, a great vacation for all the family! Anyway my poor English has been useful thanks to Engvid’s lessons, that’s my opinion. So thank you so much once again to all the bunch!

' src=

That’s awesome, Canardo! I love long road trips. I drove across eastern Canada with a bunch of friends many years ago. We just stayed at hotels and went wherever we wanted. It was an awesome adventure.

Thanks Alex.. your way of teaching is awesome!!

' src=

Thanks a lot, adamsan. I’m glad you like it!

I get 9/10.Thanks Teacher

' src=

You’re welcome! Thanks for clicking and for studying with me.

Thank you Alex! Your are a great teacher! Your lessons are very useful.

' src=

Thanks for saying that, Night quest. I truly appreciate it. Good luck with your studies.

Hi my teacher. I don’t understand this example because of using the ”EVER” word in the sentence. When has that EVER happened/been true? Why we use the ”EVER”? We don’t use the ”EVER”, what will be?…

' src=

You can eliminate the “ever” in this question and the meaning is almost exactly the same. “Ever” adds more emphasis and makes the sentence sound stronger/more powerful.

Thanks for helping us, Alex. Your lessons are very useful for me because I need a good english at the Police Academy. Thanks again ! ( 10/10 this quiz)

' src=

Good luck at the police academy! My cousin did some training in one, and he said it was really tough.

Great lesson, Alex. Love the way you teach. Thank you very much. Got 10/10

' src=

No problem. Nice avatar, Sonia. I love owls.

The whole content is really useful and you make it be easy and clear Alex. Thanks for the lesson!

' src=

' src=

Any time, Isaias! Thanks for checking out the video and for your support.

really i enjoy the lessons it seems that if i fallow the lessons carefully i will learn and speak English as soon as possible.

The lessons will definitely help! It takes daily practice, though.

Hope my best and great teacher mis valen will help me to learn english better

i have got 6/10 in one day lesson

Hi, Alex, my English is not strong, and I haven’t seen your lessons before, this is my first lesson, it’s useful to me, thank you very much!!!!

' src=

Welcome to EngVid, Julia! I’m glad it was useful, and I hope I’ll see your comments in future videos!

Yeah i got 10/10. This is first time for me. Before this i don’t know engvid.com. I so regret why i know this so lately, it’s so sad :( And then i want to say thanks so much Mr. Alex about your lesson. it’s great for a beginner likes me hehehehe

' src=

Thanks for checking it out, and welcome to EngVid! I hope you’ll enjoy your time studying with us, rafilFR.

Hi Alex, When I say I want to leave early, can I say I want to go ahead?

' src=

“I want to go ahead” only works in a very specific context. You can’t just say “I want to go ahead” to say “I’m leaving work early,” for example. If you’re with a group of friends and you’re going to the mall, though, you can use this if your friends stop somewhere else and you don’t want to stay there. “I’m gonna go ahead to the mall.”

Thanks for your kindly reply, but how to express very native that I want to leave early or I need to leave early.

“I gotta leave early.” “I need to take off early.” “I can’t stay long.”

Any number of ways. :) Sadly, I can’t think of a specific slang phrase or phrasal verb to signify leaving early.

Thank you,Teacher Adam! I learned a lot of usage of the Present Perfect. :) Your teaching is organized and clear.

But I have a question about below “when” question. ﹝When has that ever happened/been ture?﹞ Could you explain what situation we use the sentence? Thank a lot :D

' src=

Haha. Another student who called me Adam. :) Don’t worry about it, cindy. It’s not the first time.

The question you’re asking about could be used in a funny or sarcastic way. For example:

A: Julia is on her way! She’s going to be on time! For real this time! B: Pfft. When has THAT ever happened?

I am so sorry for typing the wrong name. Thank you very much Teacher Alex.:)

Like I said, no problem. :) You’re not the first or last student to call me Adam. Haha.

thanks ALex for this lesson although I only got 8 out of 10

' src=

That’s still good. The score is not really the important part, either. The key is whether or not you can use these questions in your daily life.

Thanks a lot, teacher Alex, a complete lesson about present perfect expressions, some times a little difficult but a really good lesson.

' src=

No body said learning was supposed to be easy. :) Haha. I’m glad you liked it, angar. Nice avatar!

I think it’s also possible to use “Have you been there before?” to ask someone if he or she has experienced something or had a lifetime experience, and not only for places. Something like that: Guy 1: I yelled at my boss and our relationship has never been the same. Have you been there before? Guy 2: Yeah, I’ve been there before… Which means Guy 2, in the example, has also had the same experience. Is that right?

' src=

Yep! The common short answer to this question is just “been there.”

Well, i need practice more. I only got 7 out of 10. Thanks Alex, Great Lesson

' src=

Still a decent score. Keep on practicing and you’ll reach your goal.

You re the best teacher. I love when you doing repeat pronuntiation

' src=

Thanks! I think it’s one of the most important parts of learning a new language, so I try to focus on it in my videos.

yay 9/10 not bad thanks teacher alex!

Your lessons are very useful.Thanks

' src=

No problem! I’m glad you find them useful, and I’m always happy to help. Thanks for the feedback, aminah.

Why has no one ever explained it easy that the difference between present perfect and present perfect continuous is simply just the verb + ing. Thanks Alex for a tremendous lesson.

' src=

There’s a little more to it than that, but yeah, the structures are:

Present perfect: Subject + have/has (not/never) + past participle

Present perfect continuous: Subject + have/has (not) + been + verb + ing

I am very glad to hear that especially got your reply in minutes, :)

It doesn’t happen all the time, but I try!

Great Lesson! I have learned so much…

' src=

Napewno. Tylko nie rozmawiam duzo tutaj. Tylko z matka i tata.

10/10 One of the clearest lessons I’ve ever seen on the Web. Thank you very much

' src=

That’s awesome! Thanks a lot, valedas. I tried to make it as clear and practical as possible.

10/10 Thanks !

' src=

You rocked it! Nice job, Luamy. Now use this knowledge in your conversations.

Is there any difference when we ask:

– have you done your homework YET? – have you ALREADY done your homework?

Thanks in advance for your wonderful lesson.

' src=

Hey Liana. Good question!

Depending on the person’s tone, they could have a similar meaning, but “yet” is used with the expectation that the person HASN’T done something…yet. You can use it to show that you’re annoyed too. “Have you done that yet?!” “What do you mean you haven’t washed the dishes yet?!”

“Already” is usually used with the expectation that the person has completed the task. (USUALLY) It can also be used to show surprise. “Wow. You’ve already finished your homework? Nice job!”

To get back to your two questions, depending on your tone, they could both have a similar meaning, but the expectation of the speaker is different.

Yet = speaker doesn’t expect it to be done OR could be annoyed it’s not done

Already = speaker expects it to be done OR could be surprised that it’s done

However, just remember that if you speak ANGRILY, your “already” question above could also be used to show that you’re annoyed.

Thanks a bunch for your explanation. I am going to practice that. You are a great teacher. I have been following you and I always learn something new with you.

I like you method, thank u. pls could you suggest the Anime for improving English?

' src=

Nice! Thanks, Fess. For improving your English, I think the English dubs of most of the Studio Ghibli anime are really good. Movies like…

Kiki’s Delivery Service My Neighbour Totoro Castle in the Sky Howl’s Moving Castle

I’d check out any one of those. If you’re looking for a series, one of the classics with an excellent English dub is Cowboy Bebop. I actually prefer the English voice of Faye Valentine to her Japanese voice in that one.

' src=

Hello, I have once come across the following sentence: //I’m so angry with my brother. He took my new football to the park yesterday, and now he’s lost it.// I got the meaning, but what I don’t get is the sentence structure. The author could have simply said: … He took my new football to the park yesterday, and lost it. (which still conveys present result of past action) Why did the author say (and now he’s lost it.), which gives the sense those were two different actions: I am angry with my brother because of two reasons: (1. Yesterday he took my ball without my permission) + (2. Today he’s lost it.) Do native speakers say it this way in their daily conversation? Thank you.

' src=

I’ve never seen useful lesson like that. So Have you ever consider helping a lot of people can’t speak English Alex? :))

' src=

I got 100% thank you

' src=

Thanks, it’s very helpful!

Great explanations Alex. I always enjoy listing your lessons very much!

Hello and thank you my good teacher. Simple but So useful and important .

I have just finished the test and I got 8/10. Thanks you Alex.

' src=

Are there any differences between ” Have you ever seen a crocodile” “Have you ever seen crocodiles”? Is the sentence,”Have you ever seen crocodiles”, correct?

' src=

Thank you, Alex. I always have a problem with using Present Perfect. Your lesson helped me a lot.

' src=

Thx Alex, your lesson is helpful and after I studied your lesson, I have been sick! :/ 10/10 WOoHOO

' src=

Great lesson, thank you ;-)

' src=

Dear Alex, Have you considered making more videos on this topic? I have been here all the time seeking for help with my English grammar. I have been watching your videos since 2016. This lesson was great. I still wonder what magic have your brought in your videos that I see a lot of improvement in English writing skills. Good luck

' src=

I have learnt your lesson quite clearly. Yet, the practice has always been there to help master one’s skills. I think present perfect and present perfect continuous must have been taught side by side. Have you liked my suggestion? If there have already been a video on them side by side, it might have skipped from my eyes. please correct if you find any errors in my writing. Thanking in advance.

It might have been skipped* There we go! I found one error myself.

To anyone see my comment .. Have you thought about watching all Alex’s videos ? ? He is the best teacher I have ever seen ? thank you so much , mr Alex

' src=

I got 10 correct out of 10. Thank you very much.

There is a quizz cuestion that can be interpreted as place one: It’s been so long since I’ve seen you! ______________________________? Chad: I’ve been busy at work.

I think the correct answer is: Where have you been since Chad is answering with a location or place, more than how is he feeling, that would correspond to the question How have you been.

I love this conversation so much

Thanks a lot

Amanda: ¡Hi Mom! How have you been feeling these days? I didn’t visit you for a long time. Mom: I have been very good because your father bought three airplane tickets to travel to Paris the next week, with you. Amanda: ¡Wow! Its is a big surprise, I don’t believe it. Mom: He has saved a lot of money to give us this present. However, the main reason to do this travel is to share with you much time than we have been sharing since you move out. Amanda: Awww, my dad is so beautiful with us, I love it. Amanda: Mmmm Mom, I have a little problem, I don’t have clothes to go to Paris, all my shirts, skirts and jeans are dirty because I haven’t cleaned them yet. Can you accompany me to clean up in the laundry? Mom: Ok, but Why didn’t you wash the clothes before? Amanda: I’m sorry, but I have been very busy with my university homeworks and I forgot my clothes laundry. Mom: Don’t worry, but you need to be more focus with these little things that are very important. I have been thinking that I could help you these days If you do want. To accompany and give my support in all possible house works that you could have. Amanda: Thanks mom, you’re very special with me but I will try to organize all things that I have. But if you do want, we can prepare our bags to travel to Paris. Mom: Yeah! I love it, because ¡we are travelling to Paris the next week! And we need to prepare all things to carry to this wonderful city.
