Let’s say you want to watch “Adipurush,” a new Indian mythological action-fantasy, without thinking so much about what came before it. You want to enter the theater with as little baggage as possible, despite the associations that come with the marquee-topping Prabhas, star of both S.S. Rajamouli’s trend-setting “Baahubali” period action fantasies. Maybe you want to see a great adaptation of The Ramayana , or the most commonly adapted parts of that Sanskrit language epic poem, where the arrow-slinging god Raghava, also known as Ram (Prabhas), rescues his kidnapped wife Sita, or Janaki ( Kriti Sanon ) from the evil multi-headed god Lankesh/Ravana (Saif Ali Khan ).
“Adipurush” just opened here in America, but it’s already controversial in India, where the writers of trend pieces, interviews, and reviews consider the implications of Lankesh’s appearance , including his weird nu-metal gel-spiked haircut , which has led to some comparisons to the Muslim leader Alauddin Khilji. Sanon’s casting as Sita has also led to outrage and, unfortunately, effective demands for censorship . ( Some outspoken protesters don’t like that Sanon, the actress playing Sita, “India’s Daughter,” has danced suggestively in earlier movies.)
Is it possible to see, let alone enjoy, such an archetypal story without making too many distracting comparisons, either to other movies or real-life politics? Or are those associations simultaneously the biggest draw and problem for “Adipurush,” whose Sanskrit title can be read as “ First Man ,” and whose considerable budget (Rs 500 crore, or about $67 million) allegedly surpasses all prior Indian mega-productions? Honestly, the movie’s rough computer graphics might eclipse all other considerations since there’s so much bad green-screen image-compositing in “Adipurush,” and it all looks cheap and uninspired.
Your mileage may vary, but slapdash and tacky-looking special effects make the first hour (or more) of “Adipurush” feel interminable. Here in Manhattan’s Union Square theater, at a packed Thursday afternoon matinee, the raucous screams of Prabhas’ fans soon faded after his triumphant first scene, when Raghava almost single-handedly dispatches a horde of demonic wraiths. It took a moment to hear the auditorium’s silence beneath the movie’s typically bombastic soundtrack, but it was eventually glaring. “Adipurush” has been pre-sold to viewers based on what they already know: how can you go wrong by adapting a popular epic featuring superheroic Hindu gods, uncanny valley animal-people, and monstrous villains? Well, have you seen any good Marvel movies lately?
Recent complaints from frustrated employees of Marvel’s visual effects studios make it easier to understand why an SFX-driven event title like “Adipurush” could cost so much and still look so bad. It’s harder to understand how the makers of this movie could be satisfied with key establishing scenes, like when Janaki swoons as she and Raghava are romantically encircled by a flock of poorly-rendered pink flamingos.
Some musical numbers, especially the ones featuring Janaki and Lankesh, also suffer from dramatic inertia given that so much of the characters’ movements only highlight computer graphics that make the theatrical cut of “ Justice League ” look polished. There’s the ersatz and seemingly literally-translated poetry of the song lyrics and expository dialogue. And then there are the totally bogus visual effects that make everything, especially the uninflected facial expressions of a normally generous ensemble cast, look like video game cut scenes. "Adipurush" has layers of problems, in other words, though it’s hard to imagine that most viewers will be able to squint past the movie’s unreflective surface problems.
There’s some hope in the end, but only if you’re inclined to see “Adipurush” as one of a few trend-chasers, whose many generic elements call back to everything, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” series, Peter Jackson ’s original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and yes, Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” two-parter. Scenes featuring the pure-hearted simian god Bajrang/Hanuman ( Devdatta Nage ) also shamelessly crib from the recent Andy Serkis-led, motion-capture-focused “Planet of the Apes” movies. The derivative nature of these oft-cribbed elements doesn’t matter as much as this movie’s dramatically flat-footed presentation, which only sometimes picks up during the big showdown between Raghava, Lankesh, and their respective armies.
“Adipurush” only really feels like a movie that was directed and not just covered during its slowly escalating finale, which pits Raghava, his brother Sesh/Laxmana (Sunny Singh), and Bajrang against Lankesh and his superhumanly fast second-in-command, Indrajit ( Vatsal Sheth ). Some of us looked forward to “Adipurush” because it was directed by Om Raut , whose “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior” also pulled itself together during splashy, climactic battle scenes. “Adipurush” still looks rough and moves gracelessly even during slow-motion battles, but at least the narrow focus of these concluding scenes gives the movie some dramatic tension.
It’s hard to otherwise imagine a moviegoer who, just looking at what’s presented in “Adipurush,” will be satisfied by this underwhelming spectacle. Everybody on-screen swims about a vast computer-generated wasteland lost in maxi-sized roles that dwarf their singular qualities. Everything is big here, but nothing looks grand.

Adipurush Movie Review: Prabhas excels as Raghav but substandard VFX is a let-down
Om raut's epic hindu saga, adipurush, opened after many delays and amid a lot of hype. while the film was deemed worth the wait, our review suggests that its overall quality was marred by subpar vfx..
Listen to Story
- Adipurush released on June 16.
- It stars Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh.
- The film has been helmed by Om Raut.
Release Date: 16 Jun, 2023
It is not easy to incorporate an epic into a 3-hour film. And when you are helming a story as popular as the Ramayan, the nitty-gritties need to be taken into consideration – cast, characterisation, sentiments, facts, storyline. Filmmaker Om Raut attempted so and Adipurush has finally graced the theaters after enduring several delays. Starring Prabhas as the lead with Kriti Sanon, has Adipurush been able to live up to its hype? Let’s find out.
Adipurush is derived into a film based on Rishi Valmiki’s epic, Ramayan. It is a story that almost every Indian has grown up listening to or watching. With Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janaki and Sunny Singh as Shesh (one of the many names of Lord Ram, Sita and Laxman, respectively), the star-studded cast was one of the film's main attractions. However, the film suffered setbacks in terms of its VFX and dialogues, which proved to be significant drawbacks.
For a minute, leave behind all the buzz and fanfare Adipurush has received until now. Watch the film without any preconceived notions and it will grab your attention from the word ‘go’! And to top it all, what is even a Prabhas film without a heroic entry? You are glued to the screen as the camera pans inside the deep blue ocean and there you see your Raghav sitting peacefully underwater, busy with his tapasya. However, before you can enjoy the calmness of the screen, the hall breaks into thunderous applause.
He emerges from the water and kills an array of dementer-like creatures, which provides an insight into the excitement, VFX, and of course, Raghav’s strength. A larger-than-life film demands heroic shots and you will find low-angle shots in abundance.
Prabhas is believable as Raghav right from the first scene and his past film choices (read Baahubali) have a great deal to play in it. He is strong, mighty, kind and just. However, one must look past his stardom to be able to enjoy what he has to offer on screen. He is a big reason why Adipurush deserves a chance and can be rightfully deemed as the saving grace of the film.
Kriti Sanon as Janaki is beautiful on screen but has way less screen time than we had expected. The actress is mostly juxtaposed amid cleverly crafted VFX. However, it is her chemistry with Prabhas that stands out. Sunny Singh as Shesh is sparsely spread across the film and has a handful of dialogues. Mostly, to substantiate Prabhas. The screenplay for him is built in a way to not let him overpower Prabhas. But not to mention, he does have his moments here and there.
Devdatta Nage is Adipurush’s Bajrangbali. Previously, we have seen a veteran like Dara Singh, play the pivotal Ramayana character. Hence, the expectations with Bajrangbali was beyond measure. Nage’s character has been written with a dash of safe humour. And it is worth mentioning how a segment of the audience in the theatres did a small namaskara as soon as he appeared on the screen. There have been inhibitions about Saif Ali Khan as Raavana in Adipurush. The pressure was doubled with having had the mighty task of sharing screen space and appearing alongside Prabhas and still standing out. Saif did a rather decent job with it. His very presence, the dark monotone that followed, successfully created a sense of terror, which is generally associated with the mythological character.
Though a bit stretched, the first half of Adipurush will leave you looking forward to what’s next. No, we aren’t talking about the dialogues and VFX, yet. The second half is cleverly planned and that’s when we realised where the maximum work was done. However, it isn’t up to the mark. Not quite.
Delving into the VFX first, the makers pushed the release date by six months. For this? Reportedly, Adipurush is one of the most expensive films ever. But the VFX mars the visuals. You see a Ravan landing on a humongous bat at his palace, on a bat-pad. Really? Then you have VFX monkeys residing in a forest, in strapped leather gear. If you also notice the fight scenes cleverly, you’ll notice that it’s never mostly finished. It’s rather covered with dust, smoke or an explosion where your entire screen will be covered by glittery particles during an intense moment. Though we’d give it to director Om Raut for trying to cleverly cut scenes that sparked a meme fest last year, the VFX was still a no-show.
About dialogues. The same was probably crafted keeping in mind the modern-day audience, but the moment you hear Lord Bajrangbali say, “Jo hamari behno ko hath lagayenge, unki lanka laga denge”, you know there's something to think about. Also, you have a Vatsal Sheth as Indrajeet, challenging Raghav in the most unimaginable way possible! You need to watch the film to know the hows and the whats. Oh wait, there are also some gems like ‘Bua ka bagicha hain kya?’ and ‘marega bete’! And we are talking about the era of Lord Ram here.
Soundtracks play a pivotal role in larger-than-life mythologies and Jai Shri Ram appears in several important segments of Adipurush. And it is bound to leave you with goosebumps. No complaints about the background score too. You also have a Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal duet after a long time with Tu Hai Sheetal Dhaara and it will soothe your soul.
Though Adipurush can be safely deemed as one of Om Raut’s biggest works, the film could surely have called for a better visual package. However, it’s a job that is moderately done. If not worse.
All in all, we can’t put a stamp on all the hype that Adipurush has been gathering, but it surely deserves one watch at the theatres. For Prabhas, if nothing else.

Adipurush Review: Prabhas A Perfect Fit For Raghava; Kriti Sanon Excels In Om Raut's Film

Adipurush Movie Review: Prabhas perfectly embodies Raghava. The dignity, heroism and stoutness he brings to the table is commendable.
Adipurush Movie Review: Yes, it’s that time of the year. Adipurush has finally hit the screens.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that back in the day, mythology used to be a favourite genre among filmmakers. And then came the 2000s that saw a plethora of modern-day screen interpretations of the two epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. Return Of Hanuman (2007), Rajneeti and Raavan (both 2010) are a few examples. Filmmaker Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022) might not have been inspired by the epics but it was heavily rooted in Indian mythology. Filmmaker SS Rajamouli had also revealed that his Baahubali series was inspired from Mahabharata along with Chandamama and Amar Chitra Katha comics.
But Adipurush happens to be a true-blue retelling of Maharishi Valmiki’s Ramayana. Through the song Ram Siya Ram, we’re given a background of how Ayodhya’s prince Raghava gets married to Janaki and then sent to a fourteen-year exile by his father, King Dasharatha, on the demand of the former’s stepmother Kaikeyi. While in the forest, Janaki gets kidnapped by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka on the request of his sister Surpanakha as a revenge as her nose gets cut off by Lakshmana. Soon, Raghava and Lakshmana travel to the island of Lanka with the help of Bajrang’s army with an aim to rescue Janaki. Now, this is a plot that is largely familiar. The challenge for the makers lied in keeping the audience engaged throughout its almost three-hour runtime. Have they been able to achieve so? Well…
National Award winning director Om Raut deserves applause for his vision and larger-than-life dream of bringing Ramayana alive on the screen for the millennials and the Gen-Z. He has mounted the film on a massive and opulent scale. Many reports claim that Adipurush has been made with a staggering Rs 500 crore. Though we don’t know the real numbers, looking at the canvas of the Prabhas and Kriti Sanon starrer, one wouldn’t question its three-digit figure budget. The art direction by Sagar Mali is spectacular. Each frame and vignette looks like an oil painting.

The credit for the same also goes to its VFX team, who has diligently reworked the special effects after the first teaser of Adipurush was widely slammed by many on social media. To all those waiting to catch a show, we strongly recommend them to experience the magnum opus in 3D. But mind you, most parts of it may make it look like an amateurish live-action animation piece. If you manage to keep that aspect aside, it shouldn’t disappoint you much.
What becomes a weak link in the film is its runtime. At a time when our attention spans are fast dwindling, helming a three-hour film becomes a tricky idea. Adipurush turns out to be a long-drawn and extremely stretched-out affair. This is exactly where our biggest fear comes true. The familiarity of the event-heavy plot coupled with its duration test your patience many a times. A two-part storytelling much like Ponniyin Selvan would have definitely helped the film. What makes up for it is its music composed by Ajay-Atul and Sachet-Parampara. Ajay-Atul, particularly, is in their element and with Jai Shri Ram, they once again prove that orchestral music is still very much a part of Indian storytelling. Adipurush, indeed, makes for an interesting addition to their oeuvre.
The dialogues, on the other hand, make the screenplay a bumpy ride. While credit goes to Manoj Muntashir for not resorting to Sanskritised Hindi for the dialogues that can be easily deciphered by the audience, some of Raghava’s lines are extremely didactic and intellectualised. In a few other scenes, the dialogues are so unintentionally colloquial that you end up cracking up. In a key scene, one of Ravana’s henchmen is seen hurling ‘yeh tera bua ka bageecha nahi hai…’ to Bajrang who is sent by Raghava to check on Janaki in Ashoka Vatika.
Prabhas perfectly embodies Raghava. The dignity, heroism and stoutness he brings to the table is commendable. It might just become the next iconic character he will be known for, following Baahubali. He ably carries the film on his shoulders and is sure to win the hearts of his fans – who already deify him – all over again. Prabhas seems to be just the right fit to play Raghava. He does his best to adopt Raghava’s characteristics and yet makes the character his own. When he’s not defying gravity and flying in the air and dishing out pearls of wisdom, the profound stillness in his eyes adds a lot of weightage, especially to the intense sequences. However, there are far too many low-angle, slow motion shots of him, which gets repetitive after a point of time.
Kriti as Janaki looks stunning. She embodies a rare blend of vulnerability and strength, remains an integral force to drive Raghava’s actions and delivers a class act. She complements the larger-than-life quotient of Prabhas with her restrained performance and excels in it. Their chemistry, particularly, in the song Tu Hai Sheetal Dhaara hits the right note.
Coming to Saif Ali Khan, his Ravana is written and portrayed through the lens of naivety. He gets reduced to mere mockery and in most of the scenes, he is either scene grumbling loudly or randomly consulting with nine other of his alter-egos. He is demonised to such an extent that he is given the most bizarre gait as a personality trait and made to wear black at all times. For an actor of Saif’s calibre and who has time and again challenged the status quo, fearlessly experimented and set new norms, his Ravana is disappointing. The scene where he kidnaps Janaki looks heavily inspired from Game Of Thrones when Viserion, the Night King, rode a dragon. And when his piśāca-like creature is seen fighting Jatayu mid-air, it reminds you of Vhagar and Arrax locking horns in The House Of Dragons.
For Sunny Singh, Lakshmana is a major departure from the regular boy-next-door image that he has become synonymous with, thanks to the Pyaar Ka Punchnama series and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018). Though with this part, he could defy the image attached to him, he doesn’t have much to do and in most scenes, appears confused and blank. Devdatta Nage as Lord Hanuman draws attention with his comic timing and bravado.
But has Om managed to live up to Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020)? Maybe not. Is it a game-changer? No. But Adipurush is a visual extravaganza that entertains and enlightens you. The film marks the beginning of an era where mythology seems to have once again captured the imagination of filmmakers. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing what Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s Ramayana, Kangana Ranaut’s Sita: The Reincarnation and Deepika Padukone’s Draupadi have in store for us!

Adipurush Movie Review: ADIPURUSH is a wellmade entertainer with a bigscreen appeal.
Adipurush is a well-made entertainer with a big-screen appeal., adipurush review {3.5/5} & review rating.
ADIPURUSH , inspired from the Ramayana, is the story of Lord Rama rescuing Mata Sita from the evil Ravana. Raghav ( Prabhas ), the prince of Ayodhya, is sent on a 14-year vanvas (exile). He’s accompanied by his wife Janki ( Kriti Sanon ) and brother Shesh (Sunny Singh). One day, while Raghav is roaming in the forest, he meets Shurpankha (Tejaswini Pandit). She falls for him and proposes marriage. Raghav respectfully declines and informs her that he's already married. Shurpankha is unable to bear the truth and she harms Janki. In retaliation, Shesh cuts her nose. She goes back to her kingdom, Lanka, and complains about it to her brother, King Lankesh (Saif Ali Khan). Lankesh decides to exact revenge. He kidnaps Janki and keeps her hostage in the Ashok Vatika in the palace complex. Raghav is devastated and he decides to head to Lanka to rescue Janki and defeat Lankesh. He’s helped by the Vaanar Raja Sugriva (voiced by Gaurrav Walia) and Lord Bajrang (Devdatta G Nage) in this historic battle. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
ADIPURUSH is based on the epic, Ramayana. Om Raut's adapted story is a classic. Clearly Om Raut, as a new generation film maker, and back with the accolades of his 2020 super hit film TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR, is driven to tell his eternal tale to a younger audience, that has grown up to VFX films and Super hero franchises from the likes of Marvel etc. To celebrate our own stories is not just laudable but indeed commendable for any storyteller. Some of the scenes are well thought out and interpreted. He also keeps the narrative simplified. However, one feels that Manoj Muntashir Shukla's dialogues could have been more impactful. The only dialogue that stands out is Raghav’s speech before the climax battle.
Om Raut's direction is first-rate. He doesn’t rush through the narrative and takes his time to build the characters and the world in which the film is set in. The film is a visual spectacle and the way he has handled the grandeur is seen to be believed. The 3D effects also are nicely done. The use of the song ‘Jai Shree Ram’ is praiseworthy and it enhances the impact.
On the flipside, the second half gets dragging. The climax fight goes on and on and makes viewers restless. Some of the CGI could have been better, knowing well that comparisons would be drawn to international films. You can make out that the film maker is keen to establish his own narrative of this tale and hence the dialogues too have perhaps been contemporised.
ADIPURUSH starts on a lovely note. The visuals in the song 'Ram Siya Ram' are beautiful and the makers smartly and briefly explain the context and background and begin the story straight away from the vanvas track. Lankesh’s entry is superb and so is the song 'Shivoham' . To show Lankesh’s statues singing the song is cinematic brilliance. The first half is lengthier than the second half and yet, it is impactful. Some of the scenes that stand out in the first half are Lankesh kidnapping Janki, Raghav meeting Shabari, Bajrang’s entry, Bajrang meeting Raghav for the first time, Sugriva and Vaali’s fight and the intermission point. Post-interval, the film falls in certain scenes. The ‘sanjeevni booti’ episode and Raghav’s speech are memorable sequences in this hour.
FDFS Public Review : Adipurush Ft. Prabhas | Kriti Sanon | Sunny Singh | Devdatta Nage
Speaking of performances, Prabhas is the apt choice for such a divine role. However, we feel that the expectation of the larger Indian public for this role was perhaps much more. The dilemma of a nation having grown up to this tale and have some of it repeated on television during the pandemic brings a strange conflict of what the audience wants to see or hear as opposed to a more modern rendition of the story the film maker wants to present. Kriti Sanon looks beautiful and gives a decent performance. Saif Ali Khan tries to give his best but is limited to some extent due to the VFX in his scenes and the execution. Om had extracted a wonderful performance from his earlier film and this role could have been another feather in his cap. Devdatta G Nage is impressive. But his dialogues though could have had more reverence and substance. Sunny Singh is fair. Siddharth Kiran Karnick (Vibhishan), Vatsal Seth (Indrajit), Tejaswini Pandit and Ayesha Madhukar (Maya) are okay. Sonal Chauhan (Mandodari) is wasted.
Ajay-Atul's music is one of the film’s USPs. 'Jai Shri Ram' is like the film’s anthem and has an exhilarating effect. 'Ram Siya Ram' (by Sachet-Parampara) is soulful. 'Shivoham' is well-tuned and shot. 'Tu Hai Sheetal Dhaara' makes for a nice watch. 'Huppa Huiya' is missing from the film. Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara's background score is energetic.
Karthik Palani's cinematography is spectacular. Nachiket Barve's costumes are appealing and in sync with the era shown in the film. Priya Suhass and Nishant Jogdand's production design is rich but perhaps contrasting to the viewer’s expectation in the scenes of Lanka. Ramazan Bulut and Pradyumna Kumar Swain's action is family-friendly and entertaining. VFX in today’s environment of movie making is integral and a style or format may appeal to many and yet one will have sceptics as the sheer possibilities are endless. While it’s terrific in some scenes, there areas scenes where there could have been scope for improvement. The conflict of telling an age old eternal tale in a more modern and contemporary style will always draw multiple views. Some will see glimpses of inspiration even from films like THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Since the film was always marketed as the eternal tale of Lord Rama and the conquest of good over evil, it remains to be seen if the audience would accept some of these scenes in the midst of the grandeur and scale of the rest of the film. Ashish Mhatre and Apurva Motiwale Sahai's editing is neat but could have been sharper in the second half.
On the whole, ADIPURUSH is a well-made entertainer with a big-screen appeal. At the box office, it’ll have a bumper opening and a strong weekend due to the immense hype and extreme excitement among the target audience to watch it in cinemas.

Prabhas emerged as a pan-India star with Baahubali. Though the craze did not transform his next movie Saaho into a money spinner, Prabhas became the most wanted star for Bollywood filmmakers who finally made Adipurush with him. Adipurush is a huge-budgeted mythological film based on Ramayana, directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series.
The first teaser could not receive a great response due to the poor computer-generated imagery, but the movie slowly garnered craze as it reached the release date. Prabhas’s stardom and Lord Rama’s sentiment are doing wonders with the advance bookings for Adipurush. Touted as one of the most expensive Indian films ever made and with stars like Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan, Adipurush is releasing today all over the world. Here is the review of Adipurush.
What Is It About?
Based on Valmiki Ramayana, Adipurush is all about Raghava (Prabhas), Janaki (Kriti Sanon) who face threat from demon Ravana (Saif Ali Khan). How Raghava with the help of a Bajrangi aka Hanuman and Sugreeva and army of Vanaras take on Ravana forms the crux of the story.
Performances
Prabhas performed fine as Raghava. As an ordinary man with no major powers, Raghava’s woes and vulnerability were portrayed well. Some action episodes of him are well made, but rest looked cinematic and artificial. Saif Ali Khan is good as Ravana, he got so much elevation in the film. His Ravana looks are modernized a bit much. He appeared powerful, but it also looked odd when he walks around in the digitally raised giant personality. Kriti is decent but she has a very limited role. Others did fine in their respective roles. Indrajit’s character enthralls for some time in the second half. Sonal Chauhan is seen in just two scenes. Devdatta Nage as Bajrang (Hanuman) is good.
Technicalities
Adipurush’s first look was denounced, but that must have made the makers focus more on the visuals. The overall visuals are better than the expectation, but there are some scenes which require betterment. The dialogues are alright. Background music stands tall among all in Adipurush and it elevated many scenes. Some scenes, frames, and characterizations remind us of popular movies in Hollywood, like ‘The Planet Of Apes’ among others. But it appeals to kids.
Scale & Grandeur
Thumbs Down
Lengthy Climax
VFX Quality In 2D
Ramayana is one of the very well-known epics and the story itself is not new. It has been told several times earlier in different forms, but Om Raut wanted to show the Ramayana as a film using modern technology and star faces. It worked to a major extent, but the damage done by CGI work could not be fully rectified. The VFX and CG work in 2D is not impressive. Whereas they are done well in 3D.
The first half of Adipurush is good with enough drama and an engaging narrative. A decent presentation of the actual story of Ramayana keeps entertaining mostly.
The second half takes off from a decent first half, but it mainly has the battle and confrontation episodes that have gone overboard with the graphics. Starting from Raghava and his army attacking Ravana’s Lanka and until the end, the whole battle episode is lengthy. It becomes an over-the-top action movie and that too with a lot of VFX work.
The background music comes to rescue Adipurush from sliding down due to pretty average VFX. Also, most of the movie has a dark ambiance. It might be the color symbolization of the Ravana and Lanka theme, but it is overdone.
Ravana’s characterization appears a bit awkward to the traditional fans of Ramayana. His fort in Lanka, his attire, and even his armory look like it was heavily inspired by the ‘superhero’ movies. The makers perspective might be correct to make the villain look trendy so as to enthrall the younger generation audiences who are very connected to the character and theme trend. Ravana’s ten heads speaking within themselves before taking a decision is interesting.
Overall, Adipurush starts as a drama-driven classic tale, but that turns into a lengthy action fest towards the latter half. It might attract children and the family audience who might want to enjoy a Hindu mythological story with a modern presentation. Considering the openings and large screenings across pan India, need to see how audiences receive it. If prepared to watch it, go for a big screen experience and recommended to see it in 3D.
Bottomline: Modern ‘3D’ Ramayana For New Generation
Rating: 2.75 /5

Adipurush: Prabhas' retelling of epic Ramayana is let down by overloaded VFX & unimpressive screenplay
Talking about the performances, the character, which literally stood out in the ensemble cast was Sita aka Janaki played by Kriti Sanon. Her aura rules the big screen
After delivering a bonafide blockbuster with Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior , filmmaker Om Raut is ready to entertain the audience with the retelling of the epic Ramayana by using modern technologies, VFX and some leverages. So, has he succeeded to enthrall the audience with this mega-budget extravaganza? Let’s find out…
Well, the story of Ramayana , which celebrates ‘good over evil’, is sacred for every Indian and honestly, re-narrating this tale requires courage and guts. So, director Om deserves appreciation for his brave effort. However, the film fails to strike a chord with you due to the loss of essence in the characters, which rely heavily on VFX and less on emotions.
While the filmmaker used heavy VFX to make it visually appealing to youth, this decision has unfortunately overpowered the storytelling. The screenplay played a big loophole as it fails to grab our attention and keep us glued to our seats. With the runtime of 3 hours, one would expect a water-tight screenplay and razor-sharp editing but sadly, it makes the cine goer lose his interest due to many unnecessary songs and sequences, which does nothing but hamper the experience.
Also, the decision of narrating this story in a dark atmosphere looked completely wrong as it leaves you with a gloomy experience. The addition of animated characters and their superpowers reminds you of MCU and DC characters like The Flash , Rocket from The Guardians of the Galaxy and others. In fact, it also takes you to parts of The Hobbit and Gotham City from The Batman.
Talking about the performances, the character, which literally stood out in the ensemble cast was Sita aka Janaki played by Kriti Sanon . Her aura rules the big screen. She literally shines in emotional moments and her chemistry with Raghav looks amazing. If you love Ramayana , you would find the characterization of Prabhas , Sunny Singh and Saif Ali Khan as Raghav, Shesh and Lankesh underwhelming. Devdatta Nage impressed as Bajrang while Vatsal Sheth steals the show as one of the lead antagonists Indrajeet.
With a long duration, overloaded VFX and non-engaging screenplay, Adipurush turns out to be a tiring and exhausting affair.

Adipurush movie review: Critics call Prabhas-starrer 'an epic disappointment'
Though the actors were praised for their performances, the film was criticised for its vfx and dialogues, which proved to be significant drawbacks.
- Updated Jun 16, 2023, 8:52 PM IST
- Prabhas’s much-awaited movie Adipurush failed to impress critics despite its enormous budget of Rs 500 crore
- The subpar CGI work and dull visual effects made the movie feel like a half-hearted attempt at bringing this epic tale to life
- Movie critic Taran Adarsh tweeted: “Disappointing. Rating: One and a half stars”
Prabhas’s much-awaited movie Adipurush failed to impress critics despite its enormous budget of Rs 500 crore and hype. The mythological drama, which is based on epic tale Ramayana, features Prabhas as Lord Ram and Kriti Sanon as Janaki, Sunny Singh as Lakshman, Devdatta Nage as Hanuman, and Saif Ali Khan as the antagonist Ravana.
Though the actors were praised for their performances, the film was criticised for its VFX and dialogues, which proved to be significant drawbacks.
Hailed as one of the most expensive Indian films ever produced, the subpar CGI work and dull visual effects made the movie feel like a half-hearted attempt at bringing this epic tale to life.
Movie critic Taran Adarsh tweeted: “Disappointing. Rating: One and a half stars. Adipurush is an Epic disappointment… Just doesn’t meet the mammoth expectations… Director Om Raut had a dream cast and a massive budget on hand, but creates a Huge Mess.”
#OneWordReview ... #Adipurush : DISAPPOINTING. Rating: ⭐️½ #Adipurush is an EPIC DISAPPOINTMENT… Just doesn’t meet the mammoth expectations… Director #OmRaut had a dream cast and a massive budget on hand, but creates a HUGE MESS. #AdipurushReview pic.twitter.com/zQ9qge30Kv — taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) June 16, 2023
Earlier, Adarsh had said that Ramayan's modern-day interpretation is important to him rather than the actors and VFX.
“For me, the most important thing is not Prabhas, Kriti Sanon or Saif Ali Khan. For me, it is Ramayan, and it is a very strong emotion. Everything else is secondary,” he stated while agreeing that many Indians watching the film will resonate with his emotion.”
Film critic Vishwajit Patil wrote, "#AdipurushReview: Disappointed. #Adipurush is a king-sized disappointment… BAD VFX, low on content [first half nosedives]… #Adipurush could’ve been a game changer, but, alas, it’s a missed opportunity… All gloss, no soul. #Prabhas worst performance."
#AdipurushReview : Disappointed. #Adipurush is a king-sized disappointment… BAD VFX, low on content [first half nosedives]… #Adipurush could’ve been a game changer, but, alas, it’s a missed opportunity… All gloss, no soul. #Prabhas worst performance. However, film trade analyst Sumit Kadel said Adipurush is a stellar exhibition of Ramayana in its fully glory and sanctity. "Director @omraut created a spectacle with Top Notch Visual [Some VFX portions look tacky] fronted by elevation scenes which’ll garner electrifying response from the audiences," he tweeted.

In terms of acting, Prabhas as Lord Ram performed well and fit perfectly in the lead role and his charisma outweighed everything else, said critics. Kriti Sanon has less screen time as Janaki, but she makes her presence felt.
Siddharth Kannan tweeted Kriti Sanon’s portrayal of Janaki in Adipurush is pure and played to perfection.
“@kritisanon's portrayal of #Janaki in #Adipurush is pure and played to perfection. How beautifully #KritiSanon balances authenticity with an ethereal charm that catches attention,” said Kanan.
Raavan’s depiction in the movie didn’t impress the critics. Despite Khan’s best attempts, Om Raut’s portrayal of Raavana as a superhero villain falls to impress the fans.
Fans too criticised ‘cringeworthy’ dialogues in Adipurush. Dialogues, which were written to cater to the modern-day audience, were a major setback especially when you hear Lord Bajrangbali say, “Jo hamari behno ko hath lagayenge, unki lanka laga denge”.
*Lanka Dahan Scene* Ravana's son lights up Hanuman's Tail: Jali na.. Jiski jalti hai.. Bajrang: Kapda tere baap ka. Tel tere baap ka. Aag bhi tere baap ki. Toh jalegi bhi tere baap ki. The makers are proud of these Chapri dialogues? They want kids to see this? #Adipurush — $@M (@SAMTHEBESTEST_) June 16, 2023

A Twitter user said, "Encourage children to explore authentic sources through books, storytelling or animated films that represents accurate character representation. These will provide understanding of cultural significance associated with Ramayana. Adipurush may not be the ideal Ramayana adaptation for children. It is important for parents to clarify that it's just a regular film with impressive visuals."
Massive opening
After its advance bookings opened on Sunday, the film did a business of Rs 12 crore. The national theatre chain PVR sold over one lakh tickets in the Hindi market itself and trade analysts are expecting a huge opening at the ticket counters across the country.
Earlier in the day, critics said the film might break records at the box office and may make an opening collection of Rs 40 to Rs 50 crore on Day 1.
Producer and film business expert Girish Johar said he expects the film to open huge - the hype around the film is combined with the fact that the film will release on more than 4,000 screens across all languages in India. "The audience has liked the new and revised trailer. It is based on our legendary epic Ramayan. It is a family outing, I am expecting a huge opening that may be ranging between Rs 45 and Rs 50 crore (or perhaps more) for all languages combined."
In the end, despite its inflated budget and ambitious intentions, the epic movie majorly fails when it comes to execution.
On Friday, PVR's stock price declined over 3 per cent in wake of the bad reviews for Adipurush

Adipurush Review: Motion Capture without Emotion
Movie: Adipurush Rating: 2.5/5 Banner: UV Creations, T Series Cast: Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, Devdatta Nage, Vatsal Seth, Trupti Toradmal, Sonal Chauhan and others Music: Ajay-Atul DOP: Karthik Palani Editor: Apurva Motiwale Sahai, Ashish Mhatre Producers: Bhushan Kumar, Om Raut, Prasad Sutar, Rajesh Nair, Direction: Om Raut Release Date: June 16, 2023
As a Ramayana film, "Adipurush" has generated significant buzz, with many people curious to see how Prabhas fits into the role of Lord Ram. Consequently, the film has garnered a lot of hype in the past couple of weeks.
Let us now examine its merits and demerits.
Story: Raghava (Prabhas), Janaki (Kriti Sanon), and Laxman (Sunny Singh) are exiles living in a forest. When Lakshman cuts off Soorpanaka's nose, her brother Ravana (Saif Ali Khan) kidnaps Sita and takes her to Lanka.
Raghava declares war on Ravana with the assistance of Hanuman (Devadatta) and Vanara Sena.
Artistes’ Performances: Prabhas shines in his portrayal of Raghava, also known as Lord Ram. His tall and commanding presence perfectly suits the character. Om Raut presents Lord Rama as a warrior prince, showcasing his more aggressive side, making Prabhas an ideal choice for the role.
Kriti Sanon delivers an adequate performance as Janaki. Despite having limited screen time, she performs her part well.
Saif Ali Khan initially portrays Raavana convincingly, but as the film progresses, the character's portrayal veers more towards that of a superhero rather than the traditional Raavana.
Devadatta Nage stands out as Hanuman, delivering a stellar performance that fits his character perfectly.
Sonal Chauhan makes a cameo appearance as Ravan's wife Mandodari, while Trupti Toradmal's portrayal of Soorpanaka is satisfactory.
Technical Excellence: The outstanding songs composed by Ajay-Atul greatly contribute to the film's overall strength. The skillful implementation of the song "Jai Shri Ram" in the background score enhances the drama in numerous scenes.
The music department emerges as the greatest strength of this epic drama. However, the visual effects and 3D effects fall short, as the background and other objects appear strange. The visual effects in the war sequences during the second half are particularly disappointing.
Highlights: Prabhas as Lord Ram Background music score First half
Drawback: The lengthy war scene in the second half Dark tone of the film Raavana’s characterisation Poor VFX No devotional feel
Analysis The "Ramayana" epic is a fundamental part of Indian culture and is known by all. It is deeply ingrained in our traditions and way of life. Director Om Raut had the intention to update this epic tale to appeal to today's young audience by employing innovative cinematic approaches. However, despite his good intentions, Om Raut lacks the expertise to bring his plan to fruition.
Om Raut chose to focus on a specific section of the Valmiki Ramayanam, starting in the middle of its original telling. The film begins with the Soorpanaka tale, which occurs during Ram and Sita's exile, and concludes with the battle between Ram and Ravana. Om Raut aimed to zero in on the Ramayanam's 'Yuddhakanda' (the war episode).
The initial part highlights Raavana's admirable traits and his devotion to Lord Shiva, while the latter part depicts Soorpanaka's nose being severed, Sita's abduction, Hanuman's arrival, and Ram's construction of the sethu. Therefore, the first half of the film offers a wealth of material. Despite some cheesy CGI and a peculiar depiction of Ravana's Lanka, the first half of the film is still watchable for this reason.
However, the second half of the film devolves into a standard, action-heavy fare reminiscent of the Hollywood superhero genre. The entire second half consists of an extensive and unending battle between Ram and Ravana, lacking any emotional depth. Furthermore, the visual effects are, to put it mildly, substandard. In many instances, their poor quality hinders our ability to truly enjoy the experience.
Surprisingly, Om Raut, who typically handles VFX-heavy productions like "Tanhaji," seems to struggle in this film. The dialogues are also ineffective.
Telugu audiences have witnessed better mythological films in the past, with a long history of producing fantastic films based on the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Hence, Om Raut's depiction of Lanka and Ravana's characterization falls drastically short. Lanka's world appears as if it is from a science fiction film, and it is puzzling why Raavana walks with a limp.
While it is acceptable to reimagine a popular work and present it in a new way, Om Raut made a significant mistake by transforming a magnificent epic into a gaudy superhero film lacking emotion or intriguing material.
The highlight of the film is Prabhas and the music, but the rest of it falls short.
Overall, "Adipurush" is a distorted retelling of the Ramayana that lacks emotion. While it provides some moments of theatrical experience and Prabhas fits well as Lord Ram, it does not succeed if you are seeking a devotional feel or an experience of a VFX-rich film.

Adipurush trailer: Prabhas-Kriti Sanon’s epic film reveals refined VFX, big battles, reduces screen time of Saif Ali Khan’s Lankesh
Adipurush trailer release: prabhas stars as lord rama in om raut's film. kriti sanon and saif ali khan also star in the retelling of the epic ramayana. the film will release on june 16..
The new trailer for Adipurush, the epic film starring Prabhas, is finally out amid great expectations. Director Om Raut’s film a big-screen adaptation of the epic Ramayana, in which Prabhas stars as Lord Rama, Kriti Sanon as Sita and Saif Ali Khan essays the role of Lankesh. The teaser of Adipurush had been released last year, but it received negative response for the poor quality of its VFX. After the critical reception, it was decided to postpone the film and fine-tune the visuals.
The new trailer immediately sets itself apart from the earlier one, and it’s clear that work has gone into refining the visual effects. What looked like a half-rendered work-in-progress the last time around is now at least close to what we’ve come to expect from big-budget Indian films. But as the trailer unfolds, the quality of the visual effects decreases. The final battle sequence especially looks just as unrefined as what we saw in the teaser.
The new trailer opens with a narration from Hanuman, who takes us through the familiar beats of the story — Raghav’s banishment, the abduction of Sita, and the creation of the bridge to Lanka. The second half of the trailer is made up almost entirely of speeches and battles, as Raghav inspires his army to fight by his side. Unlike the teaser, the new trailer doesn’t reveal much of Lankesh, who makes one appearance midway through the trailer, in disguise, and is then glimpsed briefly right at the end.

The trailer was launched at a special screening in Hyderabad on Monday. The film’s team, including Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and director Om Raut, attended the event that was held in a theatre in Hyderabad . Reports suggests that the screening was attended by fans amid chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’. After the screening of the trailer, Prabhas addressed fans and said, “Jai Shri Ram! How is the trailer? How is the CG? The whole team, Kriti Sanon, Bhushan Kumar have decided to release the trailer in Hyderabad first. The response from here has always been extraordinary for Adipurush. We all came here to see your response. Because if you like it, everyone will like it. Jai Shri Ram. Love you all.”
Adipurush also stars Sunny Singh and Devdatta Nage and will be release in theatres on June 16 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Ajay-Atul of Sairat fame have composed the music for the movie. Adipurush will also have a world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, on June 13.

Ramayana Adaptation Gets a Fresh New Look in ‘Adipurush’ Trailer
The Indian mythological epic will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June.
After a dramatic series of events that caused a months-long delay in its release, the upcoming Indian mythological epic film Adipurush got a new trailer on Tuesday, courtesy of T-Series. The trailer comes seven months after a teaser was released to unanimous disapproval from both die-hard fans of the talent involved to casual viewers. Nearly all complaints were directed at the film’s subpar visual effects, and T-Series made the almost immediate decision to delay the film’s release by several months to continue work on the effects.
Originally slated for a January 12 release, Adipurush is based on the epic Indian text "Ramayana." It remains one of the most highly anticipated Indian movies of the year. Even the widely criticized teaser ultimately racked up over 100 million views on YouTube alone. Adipurush was shot simultaneously in two languages — Hindi and Telugu — and will eventually be released in five. With millions of dollars at stake, it was important for director Om Raut to ensure that the film’s biggest selling point — the visual effects — were above reproach. And after many months, audiences can now see exactly how they've been refined. Not that viewers been given a chance to compare shots in the new trailer with they saw in the previous one; T-Series has made sure to not repeat even a single old visual, packing the new trailer entirely with unseen footage from the movie. And while the effects aren’t as poor as the last time around, they’re still far from perfect. What we see in the latter half of the trailer, which is mostly dedicated to revealing glimpses of large-scale battle sequences, looks just as semi-complete as the entirety of the teaser.
The new trailer opens with narration from Hanuman ( Devdatta Nage ), who recounts the sweeping tale of Lord Rama (played by Prabhas ). Rama is banished from his home, along with his wife Sita ( Kriti Sanon ) and his brother Lakshmana ( Sunny Singh ). During their banishment, Sita is abducted by the demon king of Lanka, Ravana (played by Saif Ali Khan ), and Rama goes on an epic mission to rescue her from his clutches. He is aided by Hanuman and his army of monkeys.

Why is the Ramayana So Significant?
The mythological epic "Ramayana" has been adapted numerous times over the years, on film, television, and in literature, including a long-running TV show and even an anime. The story is monumentally important to Hindus across the world, who celebrate Rama's victory over Ravana on the Dussehra festival every year. The festival of Diwali is celebrated to mark Rama’s return to his hometown Ayodhya. Every Indian, regardless of faith, is intimately familiar with this epic story , about the triumph of good over evil.
Prabhas is best known for starring in RRR director S.S. Rajamouli ’s Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion . In fact, like RRR , Adipurush is aesthetically more of a South Indian film than a Bollywood (Hindi language) spectacle. India has various regional language industries that operate mostly independently of each other, barring the occasional exception that is designed to appeal to audiences across the country. Adipurush is what the industry describes as a “pan-Indian” film — a big-budget event film that is usually dubbed into multiple local languages , marketed heavily, and presented as an “Indian” production, as opposed to a regional language offering.
And T-Series is taking things up a notch. Taking off from RRR , which became a cult hit across the U.S., and the fantasy drama Brahmāstra – Part One: Shiva , which was released domestically by Disney, Adipurush will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 13. It will be released commercially on June 16, in the Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam languages. You can watch the trailer here, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

Adipurush trailer: Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan and the action finally look impressive. Watch
The adipurush trailer is quite an improvement from the film teaser which had many question saif ali khan's look as lankesh. he is hardly seen in the trailer..
After delivering a blockbuster Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Om Raut is back with yet another epic, Adipurush. A new trailer of the film was unveiled on Tuesday and its safe to say that it was slightly more believable than the dramatic teaser which was turned down by viewers for poor VFX and Saif Ali Khan's look as Lankesh. The more than 3-minute-long trailer shows the epic story of Ramayana with Prabhas as Raghava, Kriti Sanon as Janaki, Sunny Singh as Lakshmana and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh. Also read: Fans catch glimpse of Prabhas, Kriti Sanon having a chat at Adipurush fan preview, shout ‘Jai Shri Ram’ at event. Watch
The trailer opens with Lord Hanuman as he tells the tale of Raghava who went on to become a God after being born a human. As major events of Ramayana are shown in an impressive way, a tiny glimpse of Saif as Lankesh stands out as he is only seen in disguise of a sage. Praying in front of a huge shivling, he is seen listening to a voice which says, “Brahmand mein tu jo bhi paane layak hai tu pa chuka hai, fir bhi tu rakshas hi hai. Lakshmi ko paale, Narayan ho jayega (you have already acquired everything that was worthy in the universe but you are still called a devil. Acquire Lakshmi and you will become Lord Vishnu).”
Adipurush will release in 5 different Languages including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. The Adipurush trailer not only released in India but in 70 other territories across Canada, Australia, the US, the UK, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Russia, Egypt and other places at the same time. Recently, it was announced that Adipurush will be screened at Tribeca Festival in New York on June 13.
Prabhas expressed his excitement about the premiere and said, "I am honoured that Adipurush will have its World Premiere At The Tribeca Festival, New York. It's an absolute privilege to be a part of a project that mirrors the ethos of our nation. To see our Indian films, especially one that is so close to me, Adipurush, reach the global stage makes me extremely proud not only as an actor but as an Indian too. I look forward to seeing the audience response at Tribeca," he said.

Ramayana’s [85.5% Higher Budget] VS Adipurush: Ranbir Kapoor’s Paycheck 1.5 Times Higher Than Prabhas For The Costliest Indian Film? [Fact Check]
Ranbir kapoor is all set to play lord ram in ramayana and the film has already surpassed prabhas's adipurush budget by 85%..
Ranbir Kapoor has probably taken the riskiest decision of his life by signing Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. As the Brahmastra actor gears up to play Lord Ram in the film, a lot has been at stake since there will be comparisons with Adipurush. And now, reports suggest that 835 crore has been allocated to the budget for Nitesh Tiwari’s film.
Ramayana – The Costliest Indian Film?
With a $100 Million Budget that comes somewhere around 835 crore , Nitesh Tiwari’s version of the Hindu epic might clearly be the costliest Indian film in the making. To date, it was Kalki 2898 AD s 600 crore that was touted as the costliest Indian film. And if reports are to be believed , it is RK who will deliver the costliest Indian film of this decade.
Despite all the legal trouble, everything for the magnum opus is on track, reportedly. The film has gone on floors and will be released in 2027. However, it will be only the first part of the trilogy that arrives in 2027. And there is no clarity about the next two parts. In fact, no clarity even for the budget.
Ramayana VS Adipurush
Rumors have been widespread that the budget of Ramayana is 835 crore . But is it for three films or a single film? In any which way, it is 85% higher than Adipurush’s speculated budget of 450 crore . However, this stands true only if the reports regarding the budget are true .
Another report by Zoom suggests that the 835 crore number is only an exaggerated amount that is being circulated to pique interest. A source close to the tabloid said, “These are inflated figures being planted to generate curiosity. In truth, such astronomical budget numbers are impossible. From what I know, the project’s producers are currently aiming for a budget of 500 – 550 crore . Anything beyond that would be fatal and impossible to recover.”
Even in this case, Ramayana’s budget would still be higher than Adipurush. However, it will not be the costliest Indian film in the making.
Ranbir Kapoor VS Prabhas
Coming to the paychecks of the two of the biggest superstars of the country who played Ram, while Prabhas was paid 150 crore for the Adipurush, Ranbir Kapoor is being paid 50% higher for Ramayana with a fat 225 crore reported paycheck for the trilogy. But even these are only speculated numbers.
The search for Ramayana’s Ravana is still ongoing after KGF star Yash has walked out of the role and joined the film as a producer. The film started shooting recently, and pictures of Ranbir and Sai Pallavi as Devi Sita and Lord Ram were leaked on the internet. Now that the release date is three years away, speculating any number is just a fun exercise. Even if they stand true, it might just be a fluke.
