Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of school you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a school that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of schools?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

  • Give a brief overview of the school industry.
  • Discuss the type of school you are operating.
  • Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
  • Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
  • Offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Overview

In your company overview, you will detail the type of school you are operating.

For example, you might specialize in one of the following types of schools:

  • Private K-12 school : this type of school typically charges tuition, and may be affiliated with a religious organization, or specialize in a particular learning method.
  • Charter school: this type of school offers primary or secondary education for a tuition, and may receive some public funding, and/or donations. These schools require their students to take state-mandated exams.
  • Special subject school: this type of school specializes in teaching a specific subject, such as driving, first-aid, self-defense, fine arts, language, or general tutoring.
  • Preschool: this type of school typically serves children who are aged 3 and 4. These schools prepare young children to enter formal education, and are funded by some combination of tuition, donations, and government grants.

In addition to explaining the type of school you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of students served, the number of students accepted into elite formal education institutions, etc.
  • Your legal business Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the school industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the school industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.

The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your school business plan:

  • How big is the school industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your school? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your school business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: families with elementary-aged children, families with high-school-aged children, families with preschool children.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of school you operate. Clearly, families with high schoolers would respond to different marketing promotions than families with preschoolers, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other schools.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. This includes public schools, virtual schools, and families who do homeschooling. You need to mention such competition as well.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

  • What types of students do they serve?
  • What type of school are they?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide specialized instruction, either in subject or in method?
  • Will you offer courses or services that your competition doesn’t?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a school business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of school that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide religious-focused K-8 education, college preparatory courses, or single-subject instruction like driving or fine arts?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your plan, you are presenting the courses and/or extracurricular activities you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your school. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your school located in a growing neighborhood, in the city center, or will you operate purely online? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your school marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertise in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
  • Reach out to websites
  • Distribute flyers
  • Engage in email marketing
  • Advertise on social media platforms
  • Improve the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your school, including answering calls, planning and delivering instruction, applying for grants, fundraising, performing administrative tasks, overseeing instructors, handling discipline, scheduling and monitoring extracurricular activities, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to enroll your Xth student, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your school to a new city.  

Management Team

To demonstrate your school’s potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing schools. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in running a school or experience with public school administration or who has served on a public school board.  

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you enroll 100 or 1,000 students per semester, and/or offer extracurricular activities? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your school, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a school:

  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your school location lease or a list of elective courses or extracurricular activities you will offer.

Middle school – scuola media

In Italy, after primary school there is middle school. Middle school is also compulsory. It lasts 3 years and at the end of the third year students have to take an exam.

Scuola media (middle school) is the school from 11 to 14 years. It is called “middle” because it is in the middle between primary and middle school and lasts 3 years.

The final exam that is taken at the end of the third year school is called esame di terza media or licenza media . The exam consists of written tests (Italian and mathematics) and an oral exam. All students must take this exam and pass it in order to go on with their studies.

Middle school also usually opens from September to June.

Schools can have normal time tempo normale (30 hours per week) or extended time tempo prolungato (36-40 hours per week). Most schools offer both times, but some only have one. You can ask the school of your interest directly for more information about their timetables, calendar etc.

Normal hours students have class until lunchtime. Extended time students, on the other hand, stay until the afternoon for 2 or 3 days a week. They can decide whether to stay for lunch at school with other classmates or go home for lunch. In this case, they will have to go back to school before the end of the break and before the start of afternoon classes.

In middle school, students master all major subjects. Middle school also helps students understand what they want to study at secondary school.

The subjects studied in middle school are Italian, history, geography, mathematics, science, English, music, art, physical education, technology, citizenship and the constitution.

Here too, students and their parents can choose the study of the Catholic religion which is optional. The school offers other options for students who decide not to study religion: self-study or assisted study, entry one hour later, or leaving school an hour earlier.

Many of the middle school students go to school and go home alone. Parents who do not accompany their children therefore see teachers less often.

To stay up to date on school progress and communications it is important to check the registro elettronico . The electronic register is an online tool where teachers enter attendance/absences, grades, delays, homework, examinations, lesson times, etc. The register also shows the communications from the school, and the report cards in the electronic version.

The register is therefore a very important tool that parents use to stay updated on their children’s school progress, to communicate with teachers, and to request meetings. Students can also access the register if they need to check what homework they have to do and school communications.

To access the electronic register, you must have a username and password that are given by the school office at the beginning of the first year.

Teachers also organize school-family meetings to show parents’ report cards, usually after the first half of the year, and one towards the end of the year. If you need to talk to the teachers, you can easily ask for a meeting without waiting for the school to set it.

Mitsubishi Motors Announces Momentum 2030, North American Five-year Business Plan

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) today announced details of its forward-looking North American business plan, dubbed "Mitsubishi Motors Momentum 2030", outlining business and product plans that start immediately and run through fiscal-year 2030. The plan was first revealed to the company's dealer partners in a national dealer meeting in Nashville, Tenn., on May 14, and was met with considerable enthusiasm and excitement.

"Mitsubishi Motors is at a pivotal point in North America, charting a bold, clear and attainable plan for our future success in the United States," said Mark Chaffin, MMNA president and CEO, of the plan. "Back in 2018, we started to consider our path forward, and that plan brought us a new headquarters location in Tennessee; new vehicle launches that led to record Internet search results, sales records and brand successes; and outstanding dealer partners winning customer satisfaction awards. Momentum 2030 will build on that, setting the stage for new powertrains and vehicles being introduced, new dealerships being opened, and new technologies being developed to make the shopping and ownership experience faster, easier and more enjoyable."

The path to Momentum 2030 is defined by four key points:

  • A path to electrification
  • A path to a renewed and expanded product line-up that will strengthen Mitsubishi Motors in North America
  • A path to a modernized retail sales model
  • A path to network expansion and sales growth

In revealing Momentum 2030 to the company's dealer partners, Mark Chaffin discussed how MMNA will continue its move toward vehicle electrification between now and fiscal 2030, with a vehicle lineup powered by a selection of advanced-technology internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electrics.

Additionally, Chaffin announced the product highlights that will define the company's showroom lineup going forward: two all-new vehicles to debut into segments in which the company does not currently compete, as well as a new or completely refreshed vehicle to debut each year between fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2030. By fiscal 2030, MMNA's vehicle lineup in the U.S. will nearly double from today's four vehicles.

A further benefit of Momentum 2030 also will be the boost to Mitsubishi Motors' investment across North America in both people and production, as some vehicles will be produced locally utilizing Alliance assets.

MMNA will be a leader in industry change and evolution. The modernized sales and service model is highlighted by future developments that will see more technology introduced into the sales process, as the brand's new customers skew younger and more tech-savvy.

Looking to the future of the company's retail model, MMNA will expand into new markets around the U.S. in which it does not currently have a retail footprint, in order to make the company's vehicles more accessible to more customers. This is expected to bring an increase in the company's sales numbers between now and 2030. New retail concepts will define the future look and feel of these new facilities.

Chaffin closed the recent dealer meeting by saying, "The next 10 years will be great for this brand. MMC is making a significant investment to ensure our collective future. Momentum 2030 will drive more sales, more service, more Mitsubishi vehicles on the road and more Mitsubishi dealer partners around the country. Yes, this is our time, Team Mitsubishi."

As the city plans more revitalization downtown, why not do some revitalizing of your own?

Hagerstown's Community and Economic Development Department is conducting a survey among residents and business owners in a central part of Hagerstown.

It's part of a two-year process that began late last year to develop a strategy to redevelop a neighborhood that could use a little help.

Hagerstown was one of 14 recipients of grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to develop a comprehensive "Transformation Plan" for a "Choice Neighborhood."

This one includes the Hagerstown Housing Authority's Frederick Manor, Douglass Court and Parkside Homes, as well as all of downtown Hagerstown.

The surveys are designed to assess the needs and concerns of those who live or conduct their businesses within that neighborhood, and during a recent meeting of downtown business owners, Rachel Paul, the department's planning and outreach coordinator, explained that downtown Hagerstown had been included because of "its role as an employment destination and hub for businesses, events and history."

We often hear from folks who think downtown Hagerstown gets too much attention, that too much effort is concentrated downtown when other neighborhoods need help, too. And that for all the efforts, those issues that turned them against downtown in the first place persist.

They are correct in that every neighborhood, not just downtown, is important to the overall quality of life here. And they're correct that social issues don't clear up overnight.

But does that mean efforts to improve downtown Hagerstown should come to a full stop? Particularly when so much recent progress has been made?

Keeping any neighborhood vibrant and viable is never a one-and-done deal. Think of your own home — if you don't maintain it, what happens? Clearly without efforts to keep the momentum going downtown, the investments that have been made would be hindered.

That being said, the city also has programs designed to help improve neighborhoods throughout Hagerstown. A notable one is its Neighborhoods 1st program, which allows residents to take the lead in improving their own neighborhoods, with practical support — and a little cash, as available — from the city.

But if you look at the Neighborhoods 1st map on the city's website, you'll see that a relatively small portion of Hagerstown's many neighborhoods are taking advantage of it. That means these residents are missing out on what it has to offer.

And granted, it takes a little work to get a neighborhood group organized and keep it going. If you make that effort, however, it also gives you an opportunity to work with the city's staff up close and personal — and gives you a stronger, more unified voice in decisions that affect your neighborhood.

It gives you an incentive to get to know your neighbors, too. You might find they have the same vision or concerns that you do.

In fact, making neighborhoods thrive, whether downtown or elsewhere in Hagerstown (or in Boonsboro or Williamsport or anywhere else) doesn't have to be, and really shouldn't be, the sole responsibility of the local government. Those of you who like to complain but are doing nothing to help could start doing your part to make your corner of the county a nicer place to be.

And if you happen to live in the Choice Neighborhood, you can start by responding to the city's survey. They want to hear from you. So whether you want to heap praise or mount complaints, this is the time and place to do it. They're trying to make a Hagerstown a better place. Are you willing to help?

How Biden’s Trade War With China Differs From Trump’s

The president is trying a targeted approach, with allies, to beat Beijing in the race to own the clean energy future. Those weren’t his predecessor’s goals.

Joseph R. Biden Jr. ran for the White House as a sharp critic of President Donald J. Trump’s crackdown on trade with China. In office, though, he has taken Mr. Trump’s trade war with Beijing and escalated it, albeit with a very different aim.

The two men, locked in a rematch election this fall, share a rhetorical fondness for beating up on China’s economic practices, including accusing the Chinese of cheating at global trade. They also share a building-block policy for countering Beijing: hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs, or taxes, on Chinese imports. Those tariffs were first imposed by Mr. Trump and have been maintained by President Biden.

On Tuesday, Mr. Biden announced that he is increasing some of those tariffs. That includes quadrupling electric vehicle tariffs to 100 percent, tripling certain levies on steel and aluminum products to 25 percent, and doubling the rate on semiconductors to 50 percent.

But Mr. Biden’s trade war differs from Mr. Trump’s in important ways. Mr. Trump was trying to bring back a broad swath of factory jobs outsourced to China. Mr. Biden is seeking to increase production and jobs in a select group of emerging high-tech industries — including clean energy sectors, like electric vehicles, that Mr. Trump shows little interest in cultivating.

Mr. Biden has pulled more policy levers, some of them created by Mr. Trump. He has imposed more restrictions on trade with China, including limiting sales of American technology to Beijing, while funneling federal subsidies to American manufacturers trying to compete with Chinese production.

And in a sharp break from Mr. Trump’s go-it-alone posture, Mr. Biden’s strategy relies on bringing international allies together to counter China through a mix of domestic incentives and, potentially, coordinated tariffs on Chinese goods.

As they compete for the White House again, Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump are both promising to further increase trade pressure on China, which both men accuse of unfair trade practices that disadvantage American workers. Here is how their plans overlap, and where they diverge sharply.

Mr. Trump’s plan includes more tariffs and less trade.

Mr. Trump broke decades of political consensus by pushing aggressive restrictions on trade with China as president. He imposed tariffs on more than $360 billion worth of Chinese products, including toys, electronics and household furnishings, drawing retaliatory tariffs from Beijing.

In 2020, he struck an agreement with Chinese officials that called for China to increase its purchases of exported goods from America, including agricultural products, and carry out a series of economic reforms. China came nowhere close to fulfilling those terms . Lael Brainard, the director of Mr. Biden’s National Economic Council, told reporters this week that the deal “did not deliver on its promises.”

Mr. Trump has pledged new efforts to sever the nations’ trading relationship if he is elected to a second term. Those include barriers to investment between the two countries, along with bans on imports of Chinese steel, electronics and pharmaceuticals. He has also proposed an additional 10 percent tariff on all imports to the United States, not just those from China. And he has criticized Mr. Biden.

Chinese officials were “petrified of me putting on additional tariffs,” Mr. Trump told CNBC in March. “And we don’t use that, China is right now our boss. They are the boss of the United States, almost like we’re a subsidiary of China, and that’s because the Biden administration has been so weak.”

Mr. Biden is building on his predecessor’s efforts.

Mr. Biden was once a critic of Mr. Trump’s tariffs. “President Trump may think he’s being tough on China,” Mr. Biden said in a 2019 speech , as a candidate for president, “but all he has delivered is more pain for American farmers, manufacturers and consumers.”

Early in Mr. Biden’s administration, his aides debated rolling back many of Mr. Trump’s taxes on Chinese imports to ease the pain of rapid price increases. They ultimately decided against it. Instead, Mr. Biden will announce on Tuesday that he is increasing tariffs on about $18 billion worth of Chinese imports, including solar cells, ship-to-shore cranes and certain medical technologies.

His administration has also imposed new restrictions on exports of American semiconductors and chip-making materials to China, and it has taken the first step to cracking down on imported Chinese smart-car technologies .

Administration officials offer economic rationale for all of those moves. But Mr. Biden is also responding to swing-state political pressures — and seeking to outflank Mr. Trump on the China issue. Last month, he called for higher taxes on Chinese heavy metal imports in a speech to steelworkers in Pennsylvania, a crucial state where polls show he is struggling to overcome voter anxiety about the economy.

And while Biden aides say his tariff approach is more targeted — and, by extension, more effective — than Mr. Trump’s, the president has notably decided not to roll back any of the original tariffs that Mr. Trump imposed on Chinese products.

A greener war, with allies this time.

Mr. Biden has tailored his policy, though. He has consciously coupled new restrictions on China trade with the strategic investments, in the form of government spending and tax credits, that he has used to entice new factory production in a handful of targeted sectors.

Perhaps no product better exemplifies the divergence between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump on trade policy than electric vehicles. Mr. Trump sees them as a scourge, and has said efforts to accelerate their adoption will result in an “assassination” of American jobs .

Mr. Biden has signed multiple laws meant to supercharge electric vehicle production and consumption in the United States, including an infrastructure bill with funding for 500,000 charging stations and a climate law with lucrative incentives to make and sell the vehicles in the United States. They are part of an ambitious industrial strategy to build up American factory capacity for a host of clean energy technologies meant to fight climate change and to dominate advanced manufacturing industries globally for decades to come.

Mr. Biden is increasingly worried that a flood of low-cost electric cars and other goods from China could undermine those efforts, and he is using trade policy to protect his industrial investments. His tariff increases planned for Tuesday include a quadrupling of the rate on imported electric vehicles, to 100 percent.

And while Mr. Trump antagonized allies by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum from Japan, the European Union and elsewhere, the president has sought to bring together a coalition of wealthy democracies to battle China in clean energy. His administration led an effort at the Group of 7 summit last year to outline a harmonized strategy of subsidies to compete with China’s state funding for new technologies.

Many current and former administration officials hope that cooperation will now extend to tariffs as well, starting with Europe, which is conducting its own investigations of Chinese trade practices and appears poised to raise its existing tax rate on imported Chinese electric vehicles.
