Dr. Samrat Roy Ph.D. Programme Co-ordinator

September 2015 was a landmark in the history of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. The college was granted permission by the University of Calcutta to independently initiate a Ph.D. program in the departments of Physics, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Commerce. This makes St. Xavier’s one of a very select few colleges in the country to be allowed this privilege. It is a recognition by both the University of Calcutta and the University Grants Commission that St. Xavier’s has the merit, quality and academic pedigree to undertake and supervise research.

Prior to this, teachers of these departments were registered as doctoral supervisors under the University of Calcutta. As supervisors working under University rules, they could guide or act as co-guides to Ph.D. students registered under the University of Calcutta. The permission to run an independent Ph.D. program in St. Xavier’s College is significant in that it empowers the faculty of the four Departments to supervise Ph.D. work of research scholars registered with the College, following the Ph.D. regulations of St. Xavier’s College formulated according to the University Grants Commission and approved by the Senate of the University of Calcutta.

The Ph.D. program has been running successfully since the time of its inception with Fr. Principal as Head of the Ph.D. Committee.

The induction of fresh Ph.D. scholars happens once a year in the month of July. The process involves a successful completion of the Research Entrance Examination (RET) and a rigorous interview. The scholars have to register under St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), after completing the Ph.D. Course Work conducted by the College. The final Ph.D. degree is conferred by St. Xavier’s College and University of Calcutta. The motto of the College is Nihil Ultra- Nothing Beyond. Fr. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ, Principal, St. Xavier’s College, has taken that motto seriously. His mission is to expand the college by opening new PG courses in both the Arts and Science streams and finally, Ph.D. programs in these courses. With his vision, inspiration and determination, the College marches ahead to turn his dreams into a reality.

The subjects offered are Physics, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Commerce respectively.

The total scholars currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program since 2016 till date is 69.

The Registered scholars across departments is 36.

The Ph.D curriculum includes course work classes for its first batch of scholars towards the end of the year followed by course work examination before winter vacations.

“Scholar’s Day” the annual event of the PhD program is held every year since it’s inception in 2018. The PhD department looks forward to extend its wings to other post graduate disciplines of this college which will open new avenues of research in their respective disciplines.

Attending an Unaccredited Law School: the Pros and Cons

Law schools not approved by the American Bar Association offer savings and convenience, but limited job prospects.

Pros, Cons of Unaccredited Law Schools

More than 30 law schools in the U.S. and a few more international law schools overseas provide a legal education without ABA accreditation.

When people talk about law school , they generally mean one of the nearly 200 law schools accredited by the American Bar Association, which is the national organization of the legal profession. Any graduate of one of these law schools who has met the eligibility requirements may sit for the bar examination in any state.

To be accredited, law schools must comply with ABA standards, which cover everything from curriculum and faculty to facilities and services. The ABA frequently reevaluates and updates these standards.

For example, the ABA is currently debating whether to standardize law school curricula, allow law schools to take more students without the LSAT or GRE , and expand options for online J.D. programs .

To stay accredited, law schools file annual reports that contain data useful to applicants about factors like selectivity, diversity, bar passage and career outcomes. New law schools must meet these standards to gain accreditation, and law schools that don’t are placed on provisional status or ultimately de-accredited.

It is possible for law schools to operate without ABA accreditation, however. More than 30 law schools in the U.S. and a few more international law schools overseas provide a legal education without ABA accreditation . Most are based in California, where graduates of nonaccredited law schools can take the bar exam and qualify as lawyers.

A few other states, such as Alabama, also permit graduates of certain unaccredited law schools to take the bar.

Why Attend an Unaccredited Law School?

Unaccredited law schools tends to be much easier to get into than ABA-approved schools, making them the best option for applicants whose low grades or LSAT scores bar them from admission elsewhere.

Unaccredited law schools also tend to be cheaper and more convenient than accredited schools. Many unaccredited law schools offer flexible, part-time and online options that appeal to older applicants working full time.

Applicants may also choose unaccredited schools because of their location or other distinctions like their high levels of diversity. Some unaccredited schools have a religious bent or unconventional pedagogy that may appeal to like-minded students.

The Pitfalls of Unaccredited Law Schools

Even if graduates of unaccredited law schools save money in the short term, their postgraduate career prospects may suffer. Their overall rates of bar passage and postgraduate employment are significantly lower than for their peers from low-ranked but accredited law schools.

For example, a report by the State Bar of California found that 67% of graduates of ABA-accredited law schools passed the state bar in 2022, while state-accredited law schools had a bar passage rate of 21% and unaccredited law schools had a 9% bar passage rate. The report also found that students of unaccredited law schools are far more likely to drop out of law school.

Furthermore, there are few states that allow graduates of unaccredited law schools to take the bar and practice law. While California is a vast state with an outsize legal market, its bar exam is notoriously hard, with the lowest passage rate in the U.S. Its major legal markets are also highly competitive, attracting lawyers nationwide, putting graduates of unaccredited law schools at a disadvantage.

It is also worth noting that California is one of four states – along with Virginia, Vermont and Washington – that allow individuals to skip law school altogether and qualify for the bar exam after a traditional legal apprenticeship.

Weighing the Evidence

To be sure, graduates of unaccredited law schools who pass the bar exam can succeed in the legal field, and as practicing lawyers their legal education will fade from relevance. Many states even allow lawyers who passed the California bar and have practiced for a certain number of years – typically three to 10, depending on the state – to take their bar exam regardless of their education.

However, there are strong reasons to be wary that unaccredited law schools offer enough benefits to justify the time and tuition. Before matriculating to an unaccredited law school, ensure that it is on sound financial footing and that its graduates have a strong track record of success.

Rather than attend an unaccredited law school, consider gaining entry to an ABA-approved school by raising your LSAT score , gaining relevant work experience or improving your application essays. Even if you are denied the first time you apply, you can strengthen your candidacy as a reapplicant .

In the long run, investing in your application is a surer path to legal practice than accepting a seat at a law school that isn’t worth the cost of tuition .

Three Bowen Students to Graduate, Work as Public Defenders in Colorado

phd in law kolkata

“I was really torn between getting a masters in social work or coming to law school,” says Sullivan, a native of Washington and a graduate of Washington State University “I decided to flip a coin one day, and it landed on law school. Three years later, here I am graduating with a job in place.”

Wallace, who has an undergraduate degree in neuroscience, originally planned to attend medical school, but after an extensive period of interning at a halfway house, she realized that she felt more connected to the work in the legal field and made the decision to come to law school.

Similarly, Scott, a native of Russellville and a graduate of Arkansas Tech University, enrolled after working as a loan officer at a local credit union and realizing he needed a law degree to effectively help members.

“I worked as a licensed loan officer in the private financial industry after undergrad,” Scott says. “What I realized a lot with our members is that their problems could be fixed, but you had to have a law degree to fix them. So, I came to law school so that I could get a degree that would allow me to help people in a tangible way.”

This week, they are all expected to graduate with juris doctorate degrees. And though the road to law school was different for each of them, the start of their careers as attorneys will have the same starting point — the Office of the State Public Defender in Colorado — a very competitive program attracting graduates from all over the country, some even hailing from top law schools.

So what sets Bowen’s students apart, you wonder? We asked, and all of their answers all had a common theme: the practice-ready, skills-based learning experience they received.

“Bowen is unique in that it is a law school that allows its students to work,” said Wallace. “Rule XV of the Arkansas Rules Governing Admission to the Bar provides students with the opportunity to become limitedly licensed to practice law under a supervised attorney, and Bowen really takes advantage of that and allows its students to do the work they want to do as soon as they are eligible. It’s because of this that I, and my classmates, are in the advantageous positions we are in today.”

“I agree,” Sullivan chimed in. “I don’t think I would be in this position without the experiences I’ve had as a rule XV, specifically with the public defenders’ office, as well as an externship with the federal public defender’s office.”

Scott lauded Bowen as a school that hits above par, noting a valuable lesson he learned early on.

“When I was a 1L Dean [Emerita] Beiner taught me it’s not the rank of the law school you go to, it’s about the quality of what  the law school is  giving you,” Scott said. “I could sing Bowen’s praises for days. Bowen is one of those places where if you go in with the drive to change the world, Bowen has the tools and resources to  help you do that.”

Scott, Sullivan and Wallace will graduate as part of Bowen’s Spring 2024 graduating class. After graduation, the three will prepare to sit for the bar exam before joining the Colorado Office of the State Public Defender.
