While there are many different approaches to writing introductory paragraphs, you may want to consider beginning your essay with a quotation. Finding the right quotation and using it well within the framework of your own words can ensure that your essay is off to a great start.

Step 1 Avoid clichés and overused quotations.

  • Quote a person saying something that someone would not expect them to say.
  • Quote someone who is not universally famous.

Step 2 Punctuate the quote appropriately.

  • The quote only needs to be capitalized if it begins the sentence or if the first word of the quote is a proper noun, like the name of a person or a place.
  • In American usage, end punctuation should be placed inside the quotation marks. For example, “this is the quote.”
  • Paraphrased material (someone else’s idea put into your own words) need not have quotation marks around it, but should be attributed to the original speaker.
  • If you introduce the quote with the speaker’s name and a verb, provide a comma before the beginning of the quotation. For example: "Jane Smith said, 'blah blah blah.'"

How to Introduce Quotes in Academic Writing

It would be hard to write a good essay  without quoting sources. And as well as using quote marks , this means working quotations into your own writing. But how can you do this? In this post, we provide a few helpful tips on how to introduce quotes (short and long) in academic writing.

Introducing Short Quotations

The easiest way to quote a source is to work a short passage (sometimes just a single word) into your own sentence. For example:

The tomb was one of archaeology’s “most intriguing discoveries” (Andronicus, 1978, p. 55) and has fascinated researchers ever since.

Here, the only requirements placing the quoted text within quotation marks and making sure the quote follows grammatically from the surrounding text.

Quoting After a Colon

If you need to quote a source after a full sentence, introduce it with a colon:

On the basis of Philip II’s estimated date of death, Andronicus (1978) draws a conclusion :  “This, in all probability, must be his tomb” (p. 76).

When using a colon to introduce a quotation, the text before the colon must be a full sentence. The text after the colon, however, can be just a few words.

Quoting After a Comma

Alternatively, you can use a comma to introduce a quote. When doing this, the quoted text should follow from the preceding sentence (usually after a word like “says” or “argues”):

Andronicus (1978) says ,  “The weapons bore witness that the tomb could not have belonged to a commoner” (p. 73).

However, when a quote follows the word “that,” no comma is needed:

Andronicus (1978) says  that “The weapons bore witness that the tomb could not have belonged to a commoner” (p. 73).

Block Quotes

Finally, for longer quotations, use a  block quote . These are also introduced with a colon, but they don’t have to follow a full sentence. Furthermore, quoted text should be indented and the block quote should begin on a new line. For example, we could introduce a block quote as follows:

Andronicus (1978) describes the fresco in the following terms:

The barely visible painting depicts three hunters with spears and five horsemen with dogs pursuing their prey, wild boars and lions. This and three other paintings discovered in the adjacent tomb are among the few extant examples of fourth-century BC Greek frescoes. (p. 72)

Usually, you’ll only need block quotes for passages with more than 40 words (or four lines). The exact rules depend on the reference system you’re using, though, so be sure to check your style guide. The writer of the academic essay aims to persuade readers of an idea based on evidence. The beginning of the essay is a crucial first step in this process. In order to engage readers and establish your authority, the beginning of your essay has to accomplish certain business. Your beginning should introduce the essay, focus it, and orient readers.

Introduce the Essay.  The beginning lets your readers know what the essay is about, the  topic . The essay's topic does not exist in a vacuum, however; part of letting readers know what your essay is about means establishing the essay's  context , the frame within which you will approach your topic. For instance, in an essay about the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech, the context may be a particular legal theory about the speech right; it may be historical information concerning the writing of the amendment; it may be a contemporary dispute over flag burning; or it may be a question raised by the text itself. The point here is that, in establishing the essay's context, you are also limiting your topic. That is, you are framing an approach to your topic that necessarily eliminates other approaches. Thus, when you determine your context, you simultaneously narrow your topic and take a big step toward focusing your essay. Here's an example.

The paragraph goes on. But as you can see, Chopin's novel (the topic) is introduced in the context of the critical and moral controversy its publication engendered.

Focus the Essay.  Beyond introducing your topic, your beginning must also let readers know what the central issue is. What question or problem will you be thinking about? You can pose a question that will lead to your idea (in which case, your idea will be the answer to your question), or you can make a thesis statement. Or you can do both: you can ask a question and immediately suggest the answer that your essay will argue. Here's an example from an essay about Memorial Hall.

The fullness of your idea will not emerge until your conclusion, but your beginning must clearly indicate the direction your idea will take, must set your essay on that road. And whether you focus your essay by posing a question, stating a thesis, or combining these approaches, by the end of your beginning, readers should know what you're writing about, and  why —and why they might want to read on.

Orient Readers.  Orienting readers, locating them in your discussion, means providing information and explanations wherever necessary for your readers' understanding. Orienting is important throughout your essay, but it is crucial in the beginning. Readers who don't have the information they need to follow your discussion will get lost and quit reading. (Your teachers, of course, will trudge on.) Supplying the necessary information to orient your readers may be as simple as answering the journalist's questions of who, what, where, when, how, and why. It may mean providing a brief overview of events or a summary of the text you'll be analyzing. If the source text is brief, such as the First Amendment, you might just quote it. If the text is well known, your summary, for most audiences, won't need to be more than an identifying phrase or two:

Often, however, you will want to summarize your source more fully so that readers can follow your analysis of it.

Questions of Length and Order.  How long should the beginning be? The length should be proportionate to the length and complexity of the whole essay. For instance, if you're writing a five-page essay analyzing a single text, your beginning should be brief, no more than one or two paragraphs. On the other hand, it may take a couple of pages to set up a ten-page essay.

Does the business of the beginning have to be addressed in a particular order? No, but the order should be logical. Usually, for instance, the question or statement that focuses the essay comes at the end of the beginning, where it serves as the jumping-off point for the middle, or main body, of the essay. Topic and context are often intertwined, but the context may be established before the particular topic is introduced. In other words, the order in which you accomplish the business of the beginning is flexible and should be determined by your purpose.

Opening Strategies.  There is still the further question of how to start. What makes a good opening? You can start with specific facts and information, a keynote quotation, a question, an anecdote, or an image. But whatever sort of opening you choose, it should be directly related to your focus. A snappy quotation that doesn't help establish the context for your essay or that later plays no part in your thinking will only mislead readers and blur your focus. Be as direct and specific as you can be. This means you should avoid two types of openings:

  • The history-of-the-world (or long-distance) opening, which aims to establish a context for the essay by getting a long running start: "Ever since the dawn of civilized life, societies have struggled to reconcile the need for change with the need for order." What are we talking about here, political revolution or a new brand of soft drink? Get to it.
  • The funnel opening (a variation on the same theme), which starts with something broad and general and "funnels" its way down to a specific topic. If your essay is an argument about state-mandated prayer in public schools, don't start by generalizing about religion; start with the specific topic at hand.

Remember.  After working your way through the whole draft, testing your thinking against the evidence, perhaps changing direction or modifying the idea you started with, go back to your beginning and make sure it still provides a clear focus for the essay. Then clarify and sharpen your focus as needed. Clear, direct beginnings rarely present themselves ready-made; they must be written, and rewritten, into the sort of sharp-eyed clarity that engages readers and establishes your authority.

Use the Historical Present Tense

An effective method of beginning an essay is to use historical present tense to relate an incident from the past as if it were happening now.

This is our joy—his and mine—to sit turned away from our moms and dads in this place that feels like a secret, as though they are not even in the car with us. Use An Introductory Phrase Naming The Source, Followed By A Comma to Quote A Critic or Researcher

Note that the first letter after the quotation marks should be upper case. According to MLA guidelines, if you change the case of a letter from the original, you must indicate this with brackets. APA format doesn't require brackets.

Use A Descriptive Verb, Followed by A Comma To Introduce A Critic's Words

You can take a quote from different sources of information, such as books, magazines, websites or printed journals. Using quotes in an essay serves three goals:

  • Present additional evidence to support your point of view or oppose a claim or idea;
  • Help a reader better understand a topic under analysis;
  • Strengthen your argumentation on a topic using another writer’s eloquence.

Since quotes are mostly used in Humanities, you’ll have to follow MLA citation referencing guidelines. The Modern Language Association citation manual implies two types of quotes – short and long.

  • Short quote – Is less than 4 lines of typed text and can be embedded directly into a sentence;
  • Long quote – Is more than 4 lines of typed text and requires a separate content block in an essay without quotation marks.

Writing college essays, the recommendation is to use short quotes.

Parenthetical citation

Referring to the works of other authors in-text is done using a parenthetical citation . Such a method implies the author-page style of quoting. For example:

When it comes to writing, King suggests: “Write. Rewrite. When not writing or rewriting, read. I know of no shortcuts.” (5)

Given the MLA in-text citation already contains King’s last name, you shouldn’t mention it in the parenthesis. If the author’s name isn’t mentioned in-text, it has to be specified in a parenthetical citation.

When it comes to writing, there’s a quote I like the most: “Write. Rewrite. When not writing or rewriting, read. I know of no shortcuts.” (King 5)

According to MLA guidelines, at the end of the essay, there has to be the Works Cited page . It contains the full reference featuring author’s full name, the full title of the source, the volume, the issue number, the date of publishing, and the URL (if the source was found online). You’ve put in the hard work in your essay’s opening paragraph and body section, and you’re confident that the paper reads naturally.

Your hook is on point. The body paragraphs introduce your arguments , provide evidence, and give a solid summary of your ideas.

Then you face another common challenge in essay writing, one that’s just as hard to write as the rest of the sections in the essay outline. It hits you that the conclusion of the essay isn’t easy to write either.

The question is this: how do you write this part and wind up an essay you’ve spent a lot of time to complete?

In particular, can you end the essay with a quote ?

If so, how do you do it exactly? If not recommended, then what’s the right way to write the conclusion for an essay without missing the main point? 

Can You End An Essay With A Quote? 

You can end an essay with a direct quotation provided you quote it appropriately.  

However, it’s something we generally don’t recommend in academic writing.

In any case, the concluding paragraph is a section where you prove to your professor that you can eloquently provide a summary for issues discussed in the body section of the paper.

And what’s a better way to do that than with your own words?

Perhaps the biggest problem with ending an essay with a quote is that it crowds out your ideas, and therefore makes the whole concept or topic of the essay somewhat hard to understand from a reader’s perspective.

Quotes also tend to introduce a reader to new ideas, so they’re not best-fitting for the concluding paragraph. Again, you have to attribute an analyze them, something you’ll do better in the body section.

Keeping in mind that the conclusion is the part where you tie everything you’ve written together, consider ending with your own words instead of clogging up the section with a quote.

A good way to think of the best conclusion for your essay is to think about the “so what?” question.

Why does your argument matter as far as the essay topic in question is concerned?

Since the conclusion is where you tie everything together into a whole, make sure that what you write in your conclusion can easily convince your readers to consider your argument.

Another way to conclude the essay the right way is to determine what your main ideas are in the argument. Then, reiterate these ideas using a different set of vocabularies and sentence structures so as to not sound redundant.

By doing so, you won’t put yourself in the position where you have to introduce new information to your readers.

Things Not to Do in an Essay’s Conclusion 

Let’s be honest:

The conclusion of an essay is just as important as other parts of the paper. Yet it’s the section that many students give the least attention.

Like the other parts, you need to make sure this section grabs your professor’s attention, the same way the opening paragraph and the body paragraphs did.

1. Don’t Introduce New Information in the Conclusion 

The last mistake you want to make in the conclusion of an essay is to introduce new information that your reader isn’t already familiar with.

Your reader easily gets distracted, as they’ve lost the meaning of the essay and mostly because you’ve left them wondering what the paper was about in the first place.

If you feel like you’ve left something important out, add it to the body paragraph so it makes up the bulk of your argument.

Doing so shows that you not only have the best organization skills but also you care about providing information in the right order to your readers.

2. Don’t Repeat The Introduction Or The Thesis Statement

Copying the central theme or the paragraph that starts an essay and pasting it in the concluding paragraph is a bad way to end an essay.

Rather than using these statements as is, you can reword them so they don’t look merely pasted.

After all, rewording the intro or the thesis statement gives you an opportunity to incorporate unique sentence structure and varied vocabularies in the essay.

3. Don’t Summarize Your Ideas 

If you’re simply reiterating your main ideas in the concluding paragraphs, you don’t stand a chance to impress your professor.

Summarizing more or less makes you repeat yourself, and this can undoubtedly make the conclusion of an essay boring to read.

Instead of dwelling too much on repeating what you’ve already highlighted throughout the essay, give a thought-provoking conclusion.

For what it’s worth, you can extend your ideas beyond what you’ve already stated in the essay and naturally answer the “so what?” question.

3. Don’t Use “In Conclusion” or “In Summary” 

These are two phrases that you must never use in the conclusion of an essay.

Think about it:

Your reader has read your essay until they’ve reached the last paragraph, and they know they’ve reached the end of your paper because they’re on the last paragraph of the page.

Using these phrases not only takes up unnecessary text space in an essay but also makes you sound repetitive.

It is difficult to read, so I will type out the answer for you if you want to skip ahead:

My experience of top grade students is that they don’t spend long planning. There are no marks for your plan. This plan just jots down the 4 things our student wants to say about Priestley’s point of view. Only he can read it, it is so messy! That’s because he is moving at speed. Points make prizes and the fastest hand wins.

Thesis and Opening Paragraph

In the didactic play ‘An Inspector Calls’, I strongly agree that Priestley constructs the play to convey the message that inequality leads to tragedy.

He tackles inequality between businessmen and working class, to gender inequality to present the flaws present in Edwardian society,

and how these still need to be changed even in contemporary society.

When I set it out this way, you can see that we have a 3 part thesis statement. This gives you 3 of Priestley’s ideas to prove in your essay. It tells the examiner straight away that you will at least be ‘thoughtful’ for Level 5, and possibly ‘convincing’ and ‘perceptive’ for Level 6. This means that, as they read, they are trying to build toward giving you this mark.

Priestley constructs Birling as a proxy for a stereotypical Edwardian Edwardian capitalist to portray his selfish views as flawed, due to his lack of equality.

Birling claims metaphorically that he is a ‘hard headed man of business’. This immediately establishes a capitalist persona of Birling, to then later represent that inequality is due to capitalism.

This perhaps alludes to Stanley Baldwin, as he claimed that capitalists profited from war, and Birling is made to act as a fool as he states that ‘there is nothing to gain and everything to lose by war’, in which the juxtaposition is ironic and he is portrayed as a fool.

Once Priestley establishes Birling as a foolish capitalist, Birling claims that he seeks ‘higher prices’ and ‘lower wages’. This illustrates the immense exploitation of workers from capitalist business men, increasing the wealth gap, producing large economic inequality which eventually leads to a tragedy - Eva’s death.

Capitalism is portrayed to be a source of those actions, as since then Attlee won the labour vote by a landslide majority in 1945.

One of the fascinating bits of research I’ve carried out is what predicts a top grade essay? It has absolutely nothing to do with paragraph structures. I find this really fascinating, because most English departments have a preferred structure. Yet, when I read essays, no student keeps to a paragraph structure under pressure of the exam. And absolutely no top grade student relies on one. This is something I long suspected - the best essay simply has as many explanations as possible to prove its argument. So, these are the 3 things which make the most difference to your grade: The more explanations, the higher your mark. (Isum gives about 40 of these in the whole essay). Therefore, the faster you write - the more words you write - the higher your mark. I teach this as ‘the fastest hand wins the duel’. The more your explanations are about the writer’s point of view, the higher your mark. So, that is why I am laying this essay out this way - one explanation in each paragraph. You wouldn’t write it that way in the exam - although you could. It is just to show you how marks are building up. Notice that the examiner is being cautious in their annotations. They haven’t read my guide to An Inspector Calls, so they know nothing about Stanley Baldwin, and why this is so relevant to an audience in 1945. So, they just treat the context as ‘explained’, Level 3. They get more excited when there is a quote analysis. Notice Isum goes straight in to explaining how this reveals Priestley’s ideas, which is why it is ‘clear understanding’ Level 4.

Priestley wanted to boost these changes.

He further promotes this through the dramatic device as we hear a “sharp ring of the door bell” in which the Inspector interrupts Birling’s foolish speech about capitalism, and suggests that his capitalist view has summoned the death of Eva.

Priestley could be portraying these views of Birling as a tool to allow the rich, upper class audience that could afford to watch this play, to reflect upon themselves and evaluate whether they are acting like Birling.

Isum realises that the easiest way to build an argument is to work through the text chronologically. This, by the way, is also the best way to write an argument in the extract questions - deal with the extract chronologically, where it appears in your argument. Now Isum is using more context to back up an interpretation of Priestley’s views, so the examiner has moved the AO3 context mark up to ‘clear understanding’.

Furthermore, Priestley conveys the stark gender (in) equality at the time, to convey how men abused their power and exploited women, leading to women being shunned away from society.

Eric claims that he ‘was in that state where a chap turns nasty’. The generalised adjective ‘that’ suggests that this state was common at the time, along with the adjective ‘nasty’ which indicates the abhorrent general behaviour performed towards women at the time.

Priestley constructs this to a regular Edwardian young man who sexually exploits working class women to convey the immense gender inequality at the time.

In fact, when Eric ‘threatened to make a row’, it portrays the fact that Eric had all the power, as if he (were) reported at the time, society would turn a blind eye on Eva due to the misogynistic patriarchal society at the time - rape was not even illegal back then.

Consequently it was Eric’s unsympathetic exploitation which took a part in Eva’s death.

Priestley clearly portrays the lack of responsibility of males leading to tragedy, especially as he (Eric) refers to himself as a ‘chap’ rather than himself, distancing himself from the act he committed.

This is the kind of section of your essay you can plan in advance. If you have this in your memory, you will find it is relevant to every single essay that comes up. Even if the essay is only on Sheila, you will be able to refer to how Priestley contrasts her guilt and responsibility with Eric’s. This is even more certain because you are given a choice of two questions, one of which is always about a theme. It is always easier to get a grade 9 by choosing the theme question, rather than the character question, because it forces you to write about Priestley’s ideas. Although this looks like an extended analysis of a quote, it is actually an extended analysis of the incident, with a range of quotes. This is not a massive What, Where, How, Why paragraph, or any other paragraph technique, exploding a single quote till it dies on the page. It is simply linking lots of explanations in an argument. Because the explanation always uses quotes, it ends up convincing the examiner, so it gets Level 6 for AO2 language analysis. By the way, there are no marks for naming adjectives. And rape was definitely a crime in 1945!
