18 Essay-Free Scholarships to Apply for in 2020-2021

Scholarships are a fantastic way to save money on your college tuition and avoid taking on too much  student debt. But, let’s face it, the process of applying for scholarships can be time-consuming and, sometimes you just want something a little easier.

The good news is that easy scholarships–in particular, scholarships without essays–do exist. Some require as little effort as simply entering your name and email address (a scholarship “sweepstakes”), while other scholarships without essays require you to submit something else (like a short video, social media post, or illustration) rather than an essay. These second group of scholarships rewards effort and creativity.

Avoiding Scholarship Scams

5 sweepstakes-style scholarships with no essays, 3 easy scholarships with short answers, 10 creative, essay-free scholarships, ready to apply for your own scholarships without essays, it’s important to keep in mind two things about the easiest scholarships without essays:.

  • Your chances of winning a scholarship award are much lower than with traditional scholarships. This is because often way more people apply for these easier scholarships.
  • You run the risk of being spammed with loads of emails. In fact, many scholarship sweepstakes are created with the sole idea of getting your email address in mind. We therefore recommend using easy scholarship sweepstakes as a secondary option for paying for college. Consider using the majority of your time applying for scholarships with essays that you find on reputable scholarship sites.

And if you’re mostly worried about saving time, consider using Going Merry to apply for scholarship bundles , which combine multiple scholarships with the same essay prompts into one application. Sign up for Going Merry today to begin applying.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some easy, no essay scholarships are actually scams.  Follow the tips below to avoid getting scammed.

Scam Tip #1: Say “No” to Upfront Fees!

A scholarship shouldn’t cost anything at all to apply for (except postage). Be wary of any company or scholarship provider who requires you to pay an upfront fee in order to apply. Chances are they have nothing to offer you!

Scam Tip #2: Do The Paperwork Yourself

Some scammers will try and lure you in by telling you that they’ll take care of all the scholarship paperwork for you, including answering all the questions. You can just sit back, relax, and wait for the money to start rolling in. It almost seems too good to be true, doesn’t it? We hate to break it to you, but that’s because it is. Doing your own applications will save you loads of trouble!

(Psst – You can, however, save on some of the paperwork and the repetitive form filling by using Going Merry , which auto-fills your scholarship forms with information from your profile. You’ll still need to answer any scholarship application-specific questions yourself though!)

Scam Tip #3: Guaranteed Scholarships Don’t Exist

If scholarships were guaranteed, student loans would be a thing of the past. Avoid any company claiming to offer you a guaranteed scholarship. It’s a guaranteed scam.

Scam Tip #4: Avoid Dodgy Offers

If you receive an email from an unknown and unprofessional-looking company claiming to offer an amazing scholarship if you enter personal information on their site, it’s best to avoid it. If you’re unsure, simply do a quick Google Search and see if others have reported it as a scam before , and talk to your guidance counselor to see if he or she has information or experience working with the company.

Scam Tip #5: Do Your Research!

Doing a quick search (on Google or snopes.com ) can save you tons of trouble in the end.  Unfortunately, easy scholarships are too good to be true a lot of the time.

What’s Covered:

Are “no-essay” scholarships worth it, where to focus your scholarship search.

  • 34 No-Essay Scholarships

Scholarships play a large role in many students’ plans for how to pay for college, but completing the applications for some scholarships is time-consuming—especially for students who are busy taking challenging courses and involved with extracurricular activities. Luckily, some scholarships are easier to apply for than others, like the no-essay scholarships listed below.

No-essay scholarships are easier to apply for than other, more involved scholarships, so it doesn’t cost you much in time or effort to apply. However, because they’re easy to apply for, they receive a lot of applications, which means more competition and lower odds of winning. It is also less clear how no-essay scholarship recipients are selected without an essay to set your application apart.

If you choose to apply for no-essay scholarships, just know that they are just a part of a strategy for winning awards to college and are best-suited as a supplement to local and more niche scholarships. If you don’t like the idea of writing an essay, look for a scholarship with an equivalent task, like making a video or creating a piece of art instead.

Outside scholarships garner a lot of attention, but colleges and universities are actually the best place to look for scholarships—schools themselves grant $175 billion in scholarship money annually! It’s also worth noting that college awards are often larger than outside awards; 80% of external scholarships are less than $2,000, which looks great on paper but will only put a small dent in the cost of most colleges.

You have the best chance of winning a merit-based scholarship from a college or university. While super-selective schools with applicants fighting for admission often don’t offer merit-based scholarships—for example, none of the Ivy League colleges do—less selective colleges are often anxious to attract strong applicants. This makes applying to a college where your profile is particularly strong a smart strategy for getting a merit scholarship .

3 . Russell Alexander Law Scholarship

The Russell Alexander Law Scholarship is open to all students in Canada (high school, post-secondary) who have an interest in pursuing a law degree. The scholarship program is intended to support students who desire a career in law by offering a $2000 tuition award, but may also include additional funds to cover expenses such as laptops, books, and other educational materials.

There are relatively few eligibility requirements for this award. All applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, be in the top 80% percentile of their class, and have an interest in pursuing law as a career. The online application also asks applicants to write a single essay (maximum 1000 words) based on one of two prompts, one of which is a college diversity essay.

The firm has an online application form where applicants can upload their relevant documents. The form also asks applicants to write and upload an essay, and also asks for a single college letter of recommendation, college resume, and acceptance information from the institution you are planning to attend.

The scholarship awards $2000 to cover tuition, and another $500 to cover other school-related expenses.

The Loran Scholars Foundation was started to fill a need. The organization, formerly known as the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation National Awards, saw that most of the scholarships awarded in Canada were to students with either stellar academic or athletic abilities, which left out anyone without those qualities.

The organization began awarding scholarships based on several factors including merit, financial need and academics, but the scholarships go far beyond money. Successful applicants are awarded other valuable gifts such as being mentored by a prominent Candian professional, participating in extracurricular activities and excursions, and acceptance into a life-long association with other scholars.

The only eligibility requirements are that applicants are entering university the following year, have a GPA of 85% or higher, be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and be born between 2001 and 2007. The requirements for students from Quebec are similar, but they must have an R score equal to or higher than 29.

The application process for a Loran scholarship is a long one and passes through several stages. Applicants submit an online application form and submit materials such as a video essay. They are then shortlisted and invited to a semi-finalists interview. Those candidates are then whittled down to the national finalists who are invited to the final interview. Semi-finalists or those who make it to the national interview but are not awarded the scholarships can still be awarded prizes and scholarship money ranging in amount between $2000 and $5000.

The total value of the Loran Scholarship is around $100,000. The scholarship includes a $10,000 annual stipend, and a $10,000 tuition waiver from any of the 25 partner universities ( Memorial University , University of Alberta , York University , McMaster University , and the University of Toronto , to name a few).

The scholarship foundation shows a preference for students who are interested in sustainability studies or have an interest in ecopreneurism. All applicants must write a 1000-word essay detailing their work in this area and what professional and academic goals they have for the future.

The scholarship has a simple online form that students must submit, along with their essay, their school and what major they plan on taking.

The scholarship amount ranges between $1000 and $5000 to cover tuition, books, and other living expenses.

6. Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

This award recognizes the legacy of Terry Fox by awarding scholarships worth almost $30,000 to students who exemplify the selflessness and courage of its namesake. The application process requires applicants submit an online application. Afterward, the scholarship committee will review each application and make a shortlist. Shortlisted applicants are invited to a panel interview with former Terry Fox scholars after which the committee makes final decisions.

The award has few requirements and applicants do not have to write or submit any essays for the award. All applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, have graduated high school, and plan on attending a Canadian institution of higher learning. They must also be in good academic standing. The award also requires applicants detail their volunteer work for a humanitarian organization.

All applicants must complete the online application form before the December 1 deadline. The only materials applicants must submit are three references, and their official or unofficial transcripts for their last three years of high school. The scholarship committee screens applicants based on several factors, which include, “humanitarian ideals, overcoming obstacles, and persistence in the face of adversity”.

The total value of the prize amounts to almost $30,000, which is intended to cover tuition and expenses over four years. The scholarship is deposited directly to the institution ($7000 each year), but applicants who have other funding sources, scholarships or awards will receive only $3500 each year.

7. Mensa Canada Scholarship Program

Mensa Canada and its members sponsor several scholarships available to all Canadian high school students who plan on attending Canadian universities . The program hosts several scholarships funded by current or late Mensa members who had a passion for intelligence, academic achievement and excellence. There are three specific scholarships open to students, which have varying eligibility requirements.

The three scholarships available from the scholarship program are:

  • The Frank & Betty Woodhams Memorial Scholarship
  • The Edgar Kerstan Memorial Scholarship
  • The Art Sparrow Memorial Scholarship

There is no separate application for each scholarship. Applicants must complete a general application. Afterward, the selection committee determines which scholarships applicants are eligible for. The general eligibility requirements include:

  • Being a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  • Enrolled full-time at a Canadian post-secondary institution
  • Write (in English or French) and submit a 250-word essay detailing their career plans and goals

All decisions are based on the strength of the essay so it might be a good idea to get some college writing help to prepare your essay. The only scholarship that has a requirement is the Frank & Betty Woodhams Memorial Scholarship, which is directed at students pursuing mathematics or computer science as a major. The other two have no specific requirements and are open to all applicants.

The only requirement for the scholarship is the essay and Mensa advises all applicants to write specifically about their career goals, and their course of study, while also providing details about any extracurricular activities or obstacles they have faced on their educational journey. They must also not identify themselves in the essay. Once completed, the essay must be uploaded to an online application form, which is delivered to Mensa directly.

The Jean Lumb Foundation uses an online application form for all applicants. They also do not ask applicants to submit copious amount of supporting documentation such as college recommendation letters.

Every scholarship program has its own application requirements and process so you should review the eligibility and application requirements carefully before you start your application.

You must check the eligibility requirements carefully to determine whether you are eligible.

They have simple eligibility requirements and are based on candidate’s already completed achievements.

Some of these easy scholarships in Canada have strict usage requirements and winners are not even sent the money, but it is given to the institution or school where they are enrolled. Other programs, such as the Loran scholarships, offer more than money and gives winning students a wealth of other opportunities.

Whether you need a scholarship or not depends on whether you are planning to enter a post-secondary program and if you need financial assistance.

The amounts vary between the scholarships and can start as small as $500 and go as high as $100,000, especially if the prize is offered or sponsored by a university or college.

You must first check the eligibility requirements to see whether you are eligible, or not. If you are, then you may have to prove your eligibility or submit other documents requested by the scholarship program.

If you meet the eligibility requirements and need financial assistance to go to school, then, yes, you should apply.

Top 20 No Essay Scholarships to Apply for in 2024

Harvard University

Introduction: No essay scholarships

Let's talk about no-essay scholarships. Whether you've been applying to scholarships for a while or you're completely new to the scholarship process, chances are, at some point you've felt tired, frustrated, or even fully on fed-up with writing all of those essays. Finding financial aid can be a lot of work - I feel you!

A smart strategy when applying for scholarships is to mix up the types of scholarships you're applying for. But what does this actually mean?

Well, if you're familiar with the world of scholarships, you've probably discovered that there are scholarships out there of all sorts, shapes, and sizes.

Some scholarships are for small amounts (think: anywhere from $100 to a few thousand dollars) while others go for larger amounts (sometimes even full-tuition!). Some scholarships have long lists of application requirements, while others only ask you to write a sentence, upload your transcript, or fill out a form.

So, when I say "mix up the types of scholarships you're applying for", I'm saying that it's important to consider things such as scholarship type (is there an essay required?), amount (generally, scholarships with  bigger awards  are harder to earn), and category (how specific does the scholarship get in terms of matching your unique profile?).

This post covers one specific type of scholarship that I'm sure you'll enjoy incorporating into your scholarship strategy: a no-essay scholarship!

Most of these no essay scholarships are open to high school , college , and  graduate  school students, be sure to get those easy applications in, and keep your toes crossed while you get to work on some of those other more labor-intensive opportunities.

*Pro-tip - While some of these no essay scholarships currently have specific deadlines, keep them bookmarked because they often renew monthly, quarterly, or yearly!

no-essay scholarships

Frequently asked questions about no essay scholarships

Are no essay scholarships legit.

No essay scholarships are 100% legit!

No essay scholarships are created to be more like contests or sweepstakes. Generally, all you have to do to be considered is enter some information on an application page and you're good to go. This is in contrast with other more labor-intensive scholarships, that require a greater amount of work and time commitment (think: essays, letters of recommendation, videos, interviews).

The fact that no essay scholarships don't require a whole lot of effort (they're definitely the easiest opportunities out there!) doesn't mean that they aren't just as real as other scholarships that do have more detailed eligibility and application requirements to apply. In fact, no essay scholarships can sometimes be just as competitive as full-ride scholarships , given the fact that so many students apply for these opportunities.

At the end of the day, each and every scholarship we feature in our database and in our blog posts aims to guide students in the direction of legitimate opportunities to help you navigate the journey of paying for college.

What are some common qualities of a no essay scholarship?

The most identifiable quality of a no essay scholarship is the fact that it doesn't require an essay! Rather than asking students to upload an essay on the application page, these scholarships generally will ask for the completion of a form, or for students to upload a photo, video, or other unique type of submission. The fact that these scholarships can often be completed much more quickly and easily than other scholarships is what makes them so great.

You'll also find that the majority of no essay scholarships are open to a wide variety of students, and they usually won't have any specific eligibility requirements such as only being open to students in certain majors or with a certain minimum GPA.

Who is eligible to apply for no essay scholarships?

When it comes to eligiblity, as I mentioned just above, no essay scholarships are usually open to a wide range of students. For example, a no essay scholarship might be open to students ages 13 and older in the US, or maybe it's open to all high school students in the US. These eligibility criteria are very generous and intended to give all (or nearly all) students who want to apply an opportunity to do so.

How difficult is it to win a no essay scholarship?

Because no essay scholarships are usually open to so many different types of students, along with the fact that they often require very little effort on the part of the student (and run more like sweepstakes than real in-depth scholarships), means that they are difficult to win, and the process is unpredictable.

Luckily, because these scholarships require so little time commitment to apply, not winning one of these types of scholarships doesn't necessarily indicate that you've wasted your time applying, since it likely didn't take that much time in the first place!

How can I increase my chances of winning no essay scholarships?

No essay scholarships are open to such a wide variety of students in terms of eligible areas of study, state residency, and year in school. This, in combination with the fact that the winners for these scholarships are generally always selected at random, means that increasing your chances of winning one of these scholarships is very, very difficult.

In the spirit of full-transparency: the only way that you can actually increase your chances of winning no essay scholarships is by applying for all of them and not missing any deadlines.

For example, take Tallo's monthly no essay scholarships . They pick at least 12 winners each year, usually at the end of each month. If you want to maximize your chances of winning one of Tallo's no essay scholarships, you should set a reminder to make sure that you apply for them every month, so that you don't miss out on an opportunity to win.

Most of the no essay scholarships I've come across are for small amounts, such as $1,000. Why is this the case?

Most no-essay scholarships are for small amounts (think: $500 - $2,000) because, in comparison to other scholarships that have lots of application requirements, no-essay scholarships tend to run more like contests.

Organizations love to give back to students in any and all ways possible, and they also like to try to make student's lives easier by offering easy scholarship opportunities.

However, from the perspective of private organizations, many of them would rather save their scholarships of higher amounts to be distributed through competitive opportunities where they can select students on the basis of merit, leadership, and other qualities. That's why you'll probably never come across a full-ride scholarship that doesn't require an essay or extra submission of some sort!

Where can I find more scholarships to apply for?

There are tons of resources and places out there that you can use to find "harder" scholarships to apply for to pair with your efforts in applying to the easy ones.

The first place I recommend you go is over to the Access Scholarship Search Engine or Blog, where you can find all types of scholarships based on criteria such as home state, area of study, ethnicity, and more.

After that, I recommend you also do some surfing of the web, as well as outreach to your guidance counselor or financial aid office to help you find local scholarships and even more nuanced opportunities.

Important tips and things to keep in mind with no essay scholarships

Tip #1: apply often..

Many of these scholarships run continuously on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Set a reminder for yourself to revisit these scholarships each month and reapply to give yourself the best chance at winning one!

Tip #2: Find ways to get a leg up.

Scholarships with no essays that have any sort of additional component (like an art or video submission) will tend to give you a "leg up" because they involve more than some luck.

Take full advantage of scholarships like these by putting your best foot forward with that extra submission!

Tip #3: Make no essay scholarships one piece of the puzzle.

Scholarships with no essays should be a key component of your scholarship application strategy because of how easy they are to apply for.

However, it's important to remember they should be balanced with other scholarships that have more specific and stringent requirements.

When you apply for essay-based scholarships, you're given the opportunity to tell the committee about you, who you are and why you should be selected for the opportunity. The winners for these scholarships, unlike their no-essay counterparts, are not chosen at random, so if you choose these scholarships carefully, apply for ones that are specific to your qualities, and write strong essays, you'll have the best chances of winning at the end of the day!

General tips for applying for all kinds of scholarships

Navigating the world of scholarships can be stressful and confusing to say the least. Follow these tips to make sure you’re covering all of your bases and giving yourself the greatest possible chance at success!

#1: Get yourself organized before you dive right in.

Just like with any other part of the college / financial aid process, organization is crucial to success when it comes to searching and applying for scholarships.

My top organization-related recommendation for students is to start by creating a readily-accessible folder on your computer where you can then create subfolders for your scholarship essays, transcripts, and other application materials. This is also the place where you’ll want to house your scholarship tracker , which will help you keep track of scholarships you find, upcoming deadlines, and your overall progress.

#2: Do your brainstorming.

You likely wouldn’t start an essay on the American Revolution without doing some initial brainstorming and planning first. The same rule should apply for when it’s time to search for scholarships.

Sit down with a pen and paper or a blank word document open, and start to bullet out a list of traits and things that you feel make up who you are as a person. These things should be both academic and personal. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, here’s a sneak peek into what my own personal list might look like:

-I am from New Jersey

-I am a business student with an interest in marketing

-I like to play sports (tennis, basketball, etc)

-I hold leadership positions in my extracurriculars

-I identify as female

-I am a twin

-I am left-handed

-I enjoy doing crossword puzzles

-I go to college in Wisconsin

I could go on and on with this list, but I won’t bore you! What I’m trying to get at though is that creating a list like this to track your hobbies, academic pursuits, and other things that make up who you are can be incredibly helpful in allowing you to find scholarships that are highly specific to you.

PS - For some students, this may also fall under the initial organization step of the process, but ultimately it doesn’t matter when you do it as long as it gets done.

#3: Know where to look.

Knowing what types of scholarships you want to search for doesn’t really matter if you don’t know where to actually search for them! Here are a few ideas on where you can get started in searching for scholarships:

- Scholarship search engines like AccessScholarships.com, which allow you to search through thousands of scholarship opportunities all in one place

- Normal search engines , such as Google (the more specific you can be here, the better)

-Your school’s college prep, guidance, or financial aid page/website

- Social media (you can follow scholarship accounts and hashtags that might be relevant to help you discover local scholarships)

- Family, friends, teachers, coaches, and other people in your community who might know of local or community-based scholarships that you’re eligible for

#4: If a scholarship has an essay or additional type of submission, make sure you put your absolute best foot forward.

This is, in my opinion, the biggest key to help students see success in actually winning scholarships.

You can have a 4.0 GPA and solid letters of recommendation, but if you don’t also take the time to carefully craft, edit, and perfect the essay (or other additional submission), you’re missing out on giving the scholarship committee the opportunity to learn more about who you are as a person and why you’re a great fit to win the award.

#5: Keep those grades up.

Although this eligibility requirement can definitely vary, many scholarships require students to have at least a 2.5 or 3.0 GPA. Sometimes, the minimum requirement can be even higher, such as a 3.75/4.0.

While grades certainly aren’t the end-all-be-all, keeping your GPA up (as high as you possibly can!) will make sure that you are opening yourself up to as many opportunities as possible.

#6: Apply often.

Unfortunately, applying for scholarships is not a “one and done” process. To give yourself the highest chance at seeing success, you should apply for scholarships as often as you can, or whenever you come across an opportunity that you think is worth applying for.

Many students find it helpful to set specific goals in this area, like to apply for 3 scholarships each month. Ultimately, the goal you set should be one that is specific and realistic, based on all of the other things that you’re juggling!

#7: Ask for feedback along the way.

If you don't ever take the time to assess your weak spots, how can you possibly improve?

Asking for feedback throughout the scholarship process, whether it be from a committee, a teacher, or someone who is helping you along the way, is crucial to helping you grow and becoming a stronger applicant.

Getting feedback is especially important when it comes to the scholarship essay piece of the puzzle. When we write and edit, we tend to overlook our own mistakes because we're so used to making them. Sometimes it takes an extra set of eyes on an essay to help lead you in the direction of success.

No-essay scholarships: To conclude...

To summarize, no-essay scholarships can be a great addition to any overall scholarship strategy for high school, college, and graduate students.

Since no-essay scholarships often operate on a monthly or quarterly basis, you can give yourself a better chance at winning these scholarships if you enter in every application period that you're eligible for.

Although no-essay scholarships usually aren't for large amounts, the process of entering to win is usually an easy one, so there's no harm in applying for these scholarships to round out your strategy and yes, give you a break from all those essays!

Harvard Reaches Agreement With Protesters to End Encampment

The statements from the two sides reveal some differences in nuance over what the agreement calls for.

On Harvard’s campus, a student starts to roll up equipment. Tents are still up, and a red banner says “Land Back.”

By Anemona Hartocollis

Harvard University and student protesters announced on Tuesday that they had negotiated an end to a pro-Palestinian encampment in Harvard Yard, with the university agreeing to discuss student questions about its endowment related to the war in Gaza and to quickly process petitions for the reinstatement of suspended students.

The apparently peaceful outcome is one that has eluded some other colleges and universities, where officials have resorted to calling the police to clear demonstrators.

The coalition orchestrating the three-week-old encampment, Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine, known as HOOP, announced that it had “democratically voted to end its encampment after 20 days.”

The agreement at Harvard followed similar deals to end student encampments at more than a dozen other campuses over the last few weeks. At universities like Brown and Northwestern, students obtained concessions including meetings with trustees to discuss divestment and scholarships for Palestinian students. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee agreed to call for a cease-fire in Gaza.

But at Harvard, the two sides’ statements about the agreement differed in nuance. The student coalition suggested that Harvard had caved in to its demands, while Harvard asserted that it was willing merely to open a dialogue about the demands, and had not committed to taking any action.

On the student demand for divestment from Israel, for instance, Harvard maintained that what the administration had agreed to do was to offer the students a kind of tutorial on how its $49.5-billion endowment worked.

Harvard has held meetings about investments in the past with students who raised concerns about other issues. On energy and climate, for example, Harvard agreed not to make new investments in fossil fuels and to wind down its existing ones.

“I will facilitate a meeting with the chair of the Corporation Committee on Shareholder Responsibility and other University officials to address questions about the endowment,” Harvard’s interim president, Alan Garber, said in an email to the Harvard community on Tuesday.

The student coalition said that the university had agreed to meetings with the Harvard Corporation, the university’s governing board, and the Harvard management company, which controls its endowment. “Students will set the agenda, to begin discussions on disclosure, divestment and reinvestment,” the coalition said.

But in his statement on Tuesday, Dr. Garber never mentioned the word divestment.

The students said in their statement that Harvard had agreed to consider creating a Center for Palestine Studies. Dr. Garber, however, was much vaguer.

“In keeping with my commitment to ongoing and reasoned dialogue,” Dr. Garber wrote, “the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and I will meet with students to hear their perspectives on academic matters related to longstanding conflicts in the Middle East.”

Concerning discipline, the student coalition said that the university had offered to extend leniency to the protesters, in part by retracting suspensions and beginning reinstatement proceedings immediately. “The university is backing down on disciplinary measures and has agreed that over 60 students and student workers currently facing disciplinary procedures will have those cases expedited in line with precedents of leniency for similar actions in the past,” the coalition statement said.

Dr. Garber’s statement said it would be up to individual schools under the Harvard umbrella to decide whether to roll back sanctions against students. But he said that “with the disruption to the educational environment caused by the encampment now abated,” he would ask the schools to quickly initiate reinstatement proceedings and evaluate the disciplinary cases against participants in the encampment.

Some students criticized Harvard over the agreement.

“Harvard capitulated to the protesters,” said Josh Kaplan, an Orthodox Jewish undergraduate majoring in computer science who is on the student board of Harvard Chabad , a Jewish group.

“I think this shows many that the only way to get attention from the school is to be disruptive and to violate rules,” he added. “If you do so, you won’t be punished. I don’t see how Harvard will be able to enforce any of their rules in the future.”

The student coalition acknowledged in its statement that the encampment was foundering as students left the campus with the end of the academic year. Harvard had put pressure on protesters by suspending some of them and barring them from campus. And on Monday, Harvard police officers circulated through the encampment taking photographs, leading many protesters to fear that the police would soon move in to clear the encampment.

The students lost some public sympathy and drew accusations of antisemitism when they displayed a poster depicting Dr. Garber as a devil sitting on a toilet, with the words, “Alan Garbage funds genocide.”

The coalition said its encampment had “outlived the last day of classes, finals week and move-out weekend: a testament to the tenacity of our movement.” But it added, “there is no liberation in isolation.”

Types of easy scholarships.

There are several different types of easy scholarships to apply to. Here’s what you should know about the most common types of easy scholarships.

No essay scholarships tend to be some of the easiest options when it comes to applying for scholarship money. Applicants usually just fill out some information about themselves, such as their grade level, GPA , contact information, current school, and occasionally their financial need, such as their EFC , and are entered into the competition.

While these scholarships are easy to apply for, they also give applicants less of an opportunity to stand out as an individual. So, if no essay scholarships are part of your scholarship strategy, you should apply to many in order to increase your chances, and be sure to apply to other opportunities as well.

Short essay

Short essay scholarships are not as involved as in-depth opportunities like Posse and Questbridge , but they do give students a chance to use their own voice to appeal to the selection committee. Remember, a short essay is a great opportunity to say a lot with few words. Make sure you have a strong opening sentence , and be sure to check out our guides on writing 250 word  essays to help.

Sweepstakes

Sweepstakes are some of the easiest scholarships to apply to. Winners are chosen at random and contacted through the avenues they filled out on the application. However, because these are the easiest types of scholarships, they are also the ones that receive the most applicants. That means each applicant has a lower opportunity of winning.

Sweepstakes can be great if you win, but the chances of winning are low. Make sure you keep your eye out for scholarship scams when you apply. Although we vet all of our easy scholarships, some sites may post fraudulent ones that do not actually offer awards, or collect information to scam applicants.

Microscholarships

Micro scholarships, such as the scholarships offered on raise.me , offer money for college for things you may already be doing. With raise.me you can earn scholarships for such simple things as completing the FAFSA, uploading your course catalogue, taking the SAT (no matter the score), and more. Only certain colleges accept these scholarships, but be sure to look into it and see if a school you’re considering is on the list.

Institutional scholarships

Many colleges automatically consider students for a wide range of scholarships when they review applications. For example, Kenyon’s Distinguished Academic Scholarship does not require any additional application and can fund $15,000 per year of your education. Talk about an easy scholarship! Since there is no additional application for these scholarships, the best way to apply to opportunities like this is to apply to a wide range of safety schools where your GPA and test scores are above the average admitted student, as well as schools that are known to give strong merit and need-based aid.

Government grants

Although they are not strictly scholarships, government grants like the Pell Grant and state-based grants like the Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) are some of the easiest ways to earn money for your education. The difference between these grants and other scholarships is that if you qualify, you will automatically receive them! There is no competition or review board. You don’t have to spend time perfecting your application. This makes them easier and more reliable than any kind of scholarship!

Tips for students applying to easy scholarships

Apply early and often.

The best strategy for applying to easy scholarships is to cast a wide net. You’re less likely to win any given easy scholarship, because the application is “easy” and there are more applicants. So, the best way to help your chances is to apply to a great many opportunities, since each individual application takes minimal time and effort.

Applying to easy scholarships is great, but you should make sure to spend a good amount of time on more involved applications too. You have a much better chance of winning scholarship money with a well-crafted application to an opportunity that suits you than a random drawing, which is how many easy scholarships pick their winners. If you’re looking for a place to start looking for more specific scholarships, try out our free scholarship search tool to browse custom-matched, vetted opportunities, updated daily!

Expect a lot of email

Easy scholarships are a great way to put your name in the ring for scholarship money without taking too much time on your applications. But keep in mind that each opportunity you apply for will request your contact information. Most of the time, you will be signing up for a mailing list with each application you submit. You might end up getting monthly, weekly, or even daily email from the organization offering the scholarship.

Many people use two separate email accounts: one for personal communication with friends, family, and professional relationships, and another to manage the emails they receive from businesses, from their banks, and from newsletters they subscribe to. Making a separate email can be a great way to manage the influx of mail you will begin to receive if you apply to a lot of easy scholarships.

Consider no essay scholarships

If you’re in the market for easy scholarships, don’t neglect our list of no essay scholarships for college. Our easy scholarships involve little in the way of application materials, but some of them have a short essay or response. These no essay scholarships don’t require any response on your end, and you can easily sit down and apply to many of them.

Be wary of scholarship scams

There are a great many scholarship scams out there, but they are especially common among easy scholarships. Remember to do some investigation before you send off your application to any organization. You should never submit personal information that could be used for identity theft, and never pay an application fee to enter a contest. For more information on the matter, check out our article on how to avoid scholarship scams .

Don’t forget financial aid

One way to pay for college that’s even simpler than easy scholarships is through financial aid like institutional aid, FAFSA funds such as the Pell Grant , and other federal and state grants. Remember, if you are not filling out the FAFSA , you are potentially giving up free money for your higher education. Unlike a scholarship application, the FAFSA does not require essays or personal statements. The application process only takes you and your parents’ financial information such as tax returns and information about assets.

Downsides to easy scholarships

The biggest drawback of easy scholarship opportunities is that many students can apply for them. They are basically like a sweepstakes with free entry, which means that they will get many more applicants than more complex scholarships.

This means that your chances of winning are lower than scholarships with essays and other specific criteria. Many of these scholarships are more similar to a contest than a true scholarship competition based on merit or talent. You may also be opting into receiving marketing materials and offerings from the scholarship providers, so be aware of that if you are asked to opt-in!
