Enriching the scientific community

Program Overview

Our Department of Microbiology & Immunology mission statement is that we are an inclusive community whose passion for discovery, service, leadership and sharing of knowledge addresses global microbiology and immunology challenges. As one of the earliest departments of its kind in the nation, the Department of Microbiology & Immunology has evolved from more than a century of pioneering excellence. Microbiologists study the molecular mechanisms by which bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites colonize a host, evade the immune response, and elicit damage to the host. Immunologists study the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms by which the immune response defends the host and regulates homeostasis using innate and adaptive mechanisms.

In Microbiology & Immunology, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows work side by side with principal investigators to test hypotheses of medical or biological importance. Laboratory training is supplemented with rigorous coursework, seminar series, journal clubs, and presentation of research findings at national meetings. Our faculty use state-of-the-art tools to unlock the mysteries of the microbial world and the immune system. Most importantly, you will train in a collegial and collaborative environment with faculty that are dedicated to personalizing your training program to meet your own goals while also ensuring that you are fully prepared to advance in your career. The Department will continue to add new faculty and new research interests over the next few years.

General research areas include:

  • Viral pathogens
  • Bacterial pathogens
  • Eukaryotic pathogens
  • Innate immunity
  • Adaptive immunity
  • Cell biology of infection
  • Parasitology
  • Microbial ecology
  • Human microbiome
  • Microbial epidemiology
  • Computational modeling

We strive to understand the mechanisms by which viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites cause damage and disease in the infected host. Conversely, we also explore the pathways by which the host immune response overcomes these infections. These studies are carried out in the laboratories of 25 primary faculty, 16 joint faculty and 11 research-track faculty who receive substantial research grant support from the NIH and other funding agencies to perform this important research.

Our faculty use state-of-the-art approaches such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, computational analyses, molecular and structural biology, quantitative microscopy and an array of immunologic assays and novel animal models. These efforts are supported by the outstanding core facilities at the University of Michigan and many collaborations established across our research-intensive university.

Creative and innovative research and learning are the hallmark of our graduate program in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. This ambitious program is designed to provide graduate students with the guidance to develop and express their intellectual interests, research talents, public speaking abilities and teaching skills. These goals are accomplished through an integrated program of independent research, graduate courses, seminars and teaching.

Required coursework includes immunology, virology and microbial pathogenesis and a choice of biochemistry, cell biology or genetics. Elective courses are designed to diversify knowledge, build skills, and teach critical thinking. Annual participation in our graduate seminar series hones public speaking skills and offers a chance to receive feedback on dissertation research outside of your dissertation committee.

Preliminary Examination

Checkpoint One (at the end of year one) tests broad knowledge and critical thinking skills, and is required for advancement to candidacy. This exam is based on knowledge and understanding of assigned primary literature articles in two of three possible areas and your ability to identify experimental next steps. Checkpoint Two is the first dissertation committee meeting consisting of an oral presentation of the student’s Ph.D. dissertation plan along with a written proposal.

Dissertation Evaluation

Following the first committee meeting, students meet every 6-12 months with the dissertation committee to receive critical feedback and advice on completing a scholarly body of work worthy to constitute the dissertation. Our program requires that one primary research article be accepted prior to graduation.

Teaching Requirement

Our one-term teaching requirement builds teaching and mentoring skills through introductory lab or lecture courses. Additional opportunities are often available for students who enjoy teaching and seek more experience.

Expected Length of Program

This program is designed to require approximately five to six years for completion.

Our faculty and students, as well as the abundant resources available throughout the medical school, make the Department of Microbiology & immunology at the University of Michigan an exciting and supportive environment for academic research training.

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) activities are at the forefront of our department, with activities led by faculty, staff and students. We continue to add new activities and programs as suggested by a committee of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, staff and faculty.

Collectively, we enjoy:

Course structure.

A research degree doesn't have a taught structure, giving you the chance to investigate your chosen topic in real depth and reach a profound understanding. In communicating that understanding, through a thesis or other means, you have a rare opportunity to generate knowledge. A research degree allows you to develop new high-level skills, enhance your professional development and build new networks. It can open doors to many careers.

We understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision for you. We'll make all reasonable efforts to provide you with the courses, services and facilities as described on our website and in line with your contract with us. However, if we need to make material changes, for example due to significant disruption, we'll let our applicants and students know as soon as possible.

Components are the blocks of study that make up your course. A component may have a set module which you must study, or a number of modules from which you can choose.

Each component has a status and carries a certain number of credits towards your qualification.

The modules that are available for you to choose for each component will depend on several factors, including which modules you have chosen for other components, which modules you have completed in previous years of your course, and which term the module is taught in.

Modules are the individual units of study for your course. Each module has its own set of learning outcomes and assessment criteria and also carries a certain number of credits.

In most cases you will study one module per component, but in some cases you may need to study more than one module. For example, a 30-credit component may comprise of either one 30-credit module, or two 15-credit modules, depending on the options available.

Modules may be taught at different times of the year and by a different department or school to the one your course is primarily based in. You can find this information from the module code . For example, the module code HR100-4-FY means:

COMPONENT 01: COMPULSORY

This module is for PhD students who are completing the research portions of their thesis.

View Biological Science - Research on our Module Directory

The aim of undertaking your MSD within our School of Life Sciences is to train independent researchers who can critically assess other research work, and have a comprehensive knowledge of at least one area of biology.

An MSD involves a minimum of one year of full-time research or two years part time followed by production of a dissertation. Students enrolled on an MSD programme can upgrade to an MPhil or PhD subject to satisfactory progress.

Dissertation

Within our School of Life Sciences, you must attend two formal supervisory board meetings each year where you submit literature reviews and research reports to the Board members prior to the meeting. At these meetings, such documents are discussed with you and your progress is assessed.

Your MSD thesis is generally completed within one to two years and has a maximum length of 30,000 words.

Training of Medical Professionals and Research Scientists

Mbchb undergraduate teaching.

The Division actively participates in facilitation of Problem Based Learning for MBChB students, as well as in integrated teaching now adopted by the faculty for senior medical students. Members of the Division have been actively involved in the review of this programme. Teaching activities include lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical’s and computer-based learning. Computer based practicals are now being offered. The Health Sciences Faculty has introduced an intercalated molecular medicine course in the 3rd year of study, to allow students to take a year off between 3rd and 4th year in order to complete a BSc (Hons) degree. The Division has been contributing to the design and teaching of this intercalated course.

BSc (Infectious Diseases & Vaccines) - PTY2001S Undergraduate Teaching

Our division has actively contributed to the design of a new undergraduate program in Infectious Diseases & Vaccines, which will be launched in the Faculty in 2020.  The course aims to introduce students to the burden of infectious disease in South Africa and Africa, foundational epidemiological concepts and public health, including different sources of infection, the modes of transmission and human factors that affect susceptibility to infection. Micro-organisms of importance to human health and disease (including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites) will be covered, and how different pathogens establish infection and cause disease, and the different organ systems that are targeted. This will be integrated with an introduction to the human immune system, and the protection against infectious microbes. The prevention and control of infectious disease will be covered, with a focus on vaccines and the immune responses they generate, as well as the South African vaccination schedule, discussing different types of vaccines and how they work, as well as highlighting the gaps. At the end of the course, students will have a multidisciplinary perspective on infectious disease, including both biological and social (historical, political and economic) determinants of health and disease, and contemporary challenges. They will be able to describe the major infectious disease challenges in our context; define and explain concepts in disease control and prevention in the context of public health; describe important micro-organisms and their pathogenesis; be able to demonstrate knowledge of the basic organisation and function of the immune system and how its key features can be manipulated to prevent disease through vaccination.

Diamond, Queller elected to National Academy of Sciences

Two scientists at Washington University in St. Louis are among the 120 members and 24 international members recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Election to the academy is considered one of the highest honors accorded a U.S. scientist or engineer.

Washington University’s new academy members are Michael S. Diamond, MD, PhD , the Herbert S. Gasser Professor of Medicine at the School of Medicine, and David C. Queller , PhD, the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences.

“Michael Diamond and David Queller are leading scientists in their fields, and this important recognition honors their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research,” said Chancellor Andrew D. Martin. “I extend my enthusiastic congratulations to both on the important recognition they have received by their election to the National Academy of Sciences.”

Michael S. Diamond

Michael Diamond

Diamond is an internationally recognized expert on emerging viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19; flaviviruses such as Zika, dengue and West Nile viruses; and alphaviruses such as Chikungunya and the equine encephalitis viruses. He and his group seek to understand how such viruses cause disease and evade the body’s defenses.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Diamond developed a mouse model of COVID-19 infection that was used by researchers around the world. His work on the antibody response to infection led to multiple drug and vaccine candidates, one of which — created in collaboration with David T. Curiel, MD, PhD, a distinguished professor of radiation oncology — was developed into an intranasal vaccine and approved for use in India. As each new variant arose and spread, Diamond’s lab assessed how it fared against antibody-based therapeutics and natural and vaccine-induced immunity, and the findings of this research informed public policy.

Diamond is known for his groundbreaking work on Zika virus, which can cause babies to be born with tiny, misshapen heads. With colleagues, Diamond developed the first animal model of Zika infection during pregnancy, identified protective antibodies against the virus and helped to develop a Zika vaccine that is now in clinical trials. He also studies alphaviruses, mosquito-borne viruses that can cause encephalitis or arthritis. His lab identified new receptors alphaviruses use to infect cells, laying the groundwork for treatments for these debilitating and sometimes deadly infections.

Diamond is also a professor of molecular microbiology and of pathology and immunology, an associate director for the Andrew M. and Jane M. Bursky Center for Human Immunology and Immunotherapy Programs, and a director of the Center for Vaccines & Immunity to Microbial Pathogens. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Academy of Medicine, and a recipient of the Stanley J. Korsmeyer Award from the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Diamond earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Columbia University in 1985, followed by his medical and doctoral degrees from Harvard University in 1994. He completed a residency in internal medicine, research fellowships in molecular and cell biology and in infectious diseases, and a clinical fellowship in infectious diseases before joining the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in 2001.

David C. Queller

David Queller

Queller is one of the country’s foremost evolutionary biologists. He works primarily on social evolution. His research has applications in experimental evolution, genomics and modeling.

Queller’s theoretical work has centered on kin selection. He developed methods that have been widely applied for estimating relatedness. Queller also has developed models of kin selection and its relation to other social forces, including models of the role of viscosity in kin selection; of kin conflict in seeds; of the evolution of eusociality via demographic advantages; and of evolutionary conflicts and the fundamental theorem of natural selection.

Queller also has conducted empirical research on social insects and social amoebas together with his wife and collaborator, Joan E. Strassmann, the Charles Rebstock Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences. Strassmann is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Queller-Strassmann research group has published influential research showing the ubiquity of relatedness in social insects, its importance in both cooperation and conflict, the evolution of cheating in social amoebas and its control by high relatedness, kin discrimination, pleiotropy and the evolution of resistance.

The group is additionally studying genomic imprinting, amoeba-bacteria farming symbiosis, the units of selection and the evolution of organismality. Much of their current work centers on the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum .

Queller graduated from the University of Illinois in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in the history and philosophy of science. He earned a PhD in biology in 1982 from the University of Michigan. His dissertation applied sexual selection theory and kin selection theory to plants. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, he spent many years on the faculty at Rice University, moving to Washington University in 2011.

Queller is a fellow of the Animal Behavior Society, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among other honors, Queller won the American Society of Naturalists Young Investigator Award in 1985 and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1988.

Public health graduate to study inflammatory bowel disease before attending medical school

Allie McDermott

May 6, 2024  | Erin Bluvas,  [email protected]

The fall of 2020 was not an ideal time to be a freshman attending an out-of-state university, but Allie McDermott says she wouldn’t change a thing.

“The COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered my first year in Columbia, but USC has done everything in its power to ensure that each student feels secure and empowered to achieve greatness,” the Illinois native and Academic Scholar Excellence Awardee says. “Each year, I’ve engaged in unique experiences that have helped me connect with other students as well as the Columbia community.”

It is clear to me that the university’s student culture is founded on kindness, friendliness, engagement, dedication, and a love for college sports.

For McDermott, those experiences included signing up as a peer tutor with the Student Success Center, joining the Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity, serving as diversity and education chair for USC MedElem , and volunteering at Prisma Health (favorite role: Baby Hugger in the NICU). Inspired by Biology Distinguished Professor Emeritus Franklin Berger ’s cancer communication class, she and fellow student, Karthik Rangavajhula, co-founded USC Cancer Prevention Week. They networked with South Carolina groups, guest speakers and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to engage students in conversations about the early-onset and prevention of colorectal cancer and will present their experience at the Southeastern Colorectal Cancer Consortium Conference this summer.

“It is clear to me that the university’s student culture is founded on kindness, friendliness, engagement, dedication, and a love for college sports,” McDermott says. “I am honored to be part of the Gamecock community and know that the mission and values of the university have been ingrained into my character, equipping me with crucial tools for success in the medical field and beyond.”

In the classroom, the Honors College student and public health major found that her coursework aligned perfectly with her plan to attend medical school in the future. She found mentors in clinical associate professor Edena Guimaraes and instructor Kersten Cope .

“In Dr. Guimaraes’ intro to health promotion, education, and behavior course, I drafted a semester-long project, which included a detailed intervention strategy for improving gestational diabetes among a target population. She motivated me throughout that semester and has supported my public health interests ever since,” McDermott says. “Ms. Cope has supported my preparation for medical school through multiple one-on-one conversations that have helped me see the bigger picture of my public health degree and bridge extracurricular experiences with public health concepts I’ve learned in the classroom. Overall, I am the person I am today through these mentors.”

I am honored to be part of the Gamecock community and know that the mission and values of the university have been ingrained into my character, equipping me with crucial tools for success in the medical field and beyond.

Allie McDermott

McDermott loved that she was able to apply the many public health and biological concepts she learned on campus to her practical experiences. During the spring of her junior year, the Spanish minor studied in Barcelona – earning SAI Global Leadership and International Service Certificates for her volunteer work at a local elementary school and presentation of comparisons between different countries’ schools and health care systems.

To complete her Public Health Capstone Project, McDermott served as student coordinator for Prisma Health’s March of Dimes, building USC’s presence at the 2024 Midlands March for Babies event through team recruitment, fundraising and supporting policy advocacy efforts. This semester, she has also interned (the first student to do so) with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice Victim Services Program.

The Arnold School of Public Health offers dynamic degrees that prepare students well for numerous career paths, and their project-based curriculum has ensured that I know what it means to produce tangible results.

After graduating with Leadership Distinction in Community Service and the Outstanding Senior Award in May, McDermott will gain additional experience as a research coordinator for the Rubin Lab at the University of Chicago before applying to medical school. This role is a continuation and expansion of the work she began last summer as an undergraduate research assistant in the lab, studying inflammatory bowel disease.

“The Arnold School of Public Health offers dynamic degrees that prepare students well for numerous career paths, and their project-based curriculum has ensured that I know what it means to produce tangible results – a theme I’ve observed in multiple internship settings,” McDermott says. “I have numerous experiences that I can discuss in interviews and reflect upon to determine where my career interests remain, and the research and leadership opportunities offered by USC in the Arnold School are unparalleled. I cannot think of a better place to learn about science, about the real world, about communication strategies, and more.”

Cara Cepat (Panduan) Praktik Dasar Pengujian Mikrobiologi
