Selecting a topic can be the most difficult part of doing research. Defining and refining your topic is an ongoing process. Be prepared to change the focus of your topic as you gather more information. How you select your topic will depend also on what your instructor has specified.

These are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Interesting: Select a subject you can get interested in.  Since you will be spending a considerable amount of time researching your topic, you will want it to be something that holds your interest and that of the reader.

Broad topic : climate change  --> Focused topic : How have bottlenose dolphins adapted to climate change?

Your research question should be opened ended, will guide you in further research, and will help you formulate your thesis.

Try to be original and creative. Some topics have been overdone, and this leads to an overwhelming amount of information, making it difficult to focus a topic. Some topics that might be overdone include: mental health, first-generation college students, online education.

Try to look at topics like these from a new perspective or angle. For example:      How do the experiences of first-generation college students compare based on socioeconomic status or race, ethnicity, culture, background?

If a topic has made recent news headlines, think about what has made the issue controversial or newsworthy to get started on your research:

How can educators use online learning to regain some of the educational losses as a result of the pandemic?

By starting with what makes an otherwise common topic newsworthy it is making your research relevant, timely, more manageable and will lead you to a more interesting research question or thesis statement.

Consult Hot Research Topics & Controversial Issues for ideas and new perspectives if you wish to write about current controversies.

  • Get SubTopics
  • Get Disciplines
  • Develop thesis

All topics can be viewed from several angles. What are the smaller questions that will help create an answer to the primary question?

Who are the people affected by your study? age, ethnicity, gender, profession, company/industry

What are the components or aspects of the topic will you explore? causes, effects, diagnosis or treatment, problems, trends

Where does your topic fit? Is there a specific country, state, county, city, or country in which your topic fits geographically? Can the "where" be defined by a broader regional concept such as urban/rural, global/local? Can there where also define your population - such as college campuses, prisons, elementary schools?

When did the issue or event become important? a specific century/decade/specific time span are you going to need the most current information available? Historical information? Both?

Why is this topic important? What is significant about this issue? articulate the possible approaches and select the best one for your needs.

Which disciplines or occupations would be interested in the topic or analyze it in their literature?

Many research topics are interdisciplinary and the disciplinary focus will determine the appropriate tools to use to locate information.

For example, for the question:  How have dolphins adapted to climate change?  you could look within the following fields:

  • environmental studies

Make sure you understand the basics of your topic. If it is new to you, familiarize yourself with the basic terms, people, events, statistics and foundational information.

Reference books such as encyclopedias and handbooks will offer short articles for exactly this purpose.

See the Encyclopedias page, the subject guide best related to your area , or ask at the Research Help desk to help you locate one.

Formulate a thesis that is consistent with the evidence you find. It should be of significance to the discipline and supportable by the evidence.

As you gather information, you will formulate new questions and possibly even change the focus of your research, so your thesis may change.

If the issue is a controversial one, your thesis should reflect the position you are taking. A strong research paper will reflect both sides of an argument, and researching this is an important part of gathering background information.

  • Thesis sentence  (Excelsior OWL)
  • Formulating your Research Question (Vanderbilt Writing Center)

Once you have developed your thesis, you are reading to start searching in earnest and our search strategies page can get you started. Keep in mind that research in usually not a linear process - based on what you discover when you research, you may end up revising or even changing your thesis altogether.

A Critique of the paper ‘Library Architecture around the World’ by Garba, Chiwendu and Mustapha

For the past two decades, libraries have been dramatically reinventing their physical spaces. The traditional model of cavernous reading rooms and dark warrens separated by stacks of books is incompatible with the digital age. The library of today and tomorrow must provide versatile spaces that support a wide range of users’ learning and research activities while accommodating rapid advances in information technology (IT). As expectations for library resources and physical facilities have c...

Controlled vocabulary

Virtually every common word in the English language has more than one meaning or senseand many of those senses have more than one nuance; many words can be used as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and/or adverbs. Search systems that purport to allow the use of natural language cannot yet successfully distinguish among different meanings or various parts of speech in very large general systems, although some progress has been made in narrow subject areas.

Concepts of statistical analysis

In many fields of research, null hypothesis, significance tests, and p values are the accepted way of assessing the certainty with which research results can be extrapolated beyond the sample studied. The inevitable difficulties of statistical inference mean that these probabilities can only be tentative, but probabilities are the natural way to express uncertainties, so, arguably, researchers using statistical methods have an obligation to estimate how probable their hypotheses are by the be...

Research paper topics in library and information science

A systematic approach is best when undertaking research in the library and information science. Not only should you have an in-depth knowledge of major themes in the area, but you should also be aware of current research methods and topics of influence, such as library systems, cooperation between libraries, and the flow of information between libraries.

Finding a good research paper topic can greatly depend upon your interests and what you took away from your coursework. Paying attention in classes and taking adequate notes makes it easier to assimilate that knowledge into a coherent research paper topic. Take a look at the following research paper topics for some ideas:

  • A critical analysis of student attitudes towards cataloguing and classification in college campus libraries
  • The Impact of Public Libraries at the state level
  • The implementation of information and communication technology in academic libraries in Brazil
  • Evaluating the effect of feminization and professionalization on librarianship
  • The challenges involved in running private libraries in Nigeria
  • Defining comparative and international library and information science
  • An assessment of international cultural exchange through libraries
  • The role of international librarianship in promoting freedom of information and expression
  • International issues faced by librarians and information science professionals with regard to the knowledge society
  • Exploring the relationship between government schools and public libraries in the context of South Asia
  • The importance of resource-sharing in an international library network: bridging gaps using modern technology
  • Tackling indigenous knowledge by adopting innovative tools and strategies
  • The influence of library aid in developing countries during globalization
  • A critical comparison of American librarianship and information science research in European countries
  • Learnings from major book acquisitions in American academic libraries
  • The expanding purview of American ideas in German public libraries
  • The British Council and its critical role in building bridges across the developing world

Browsing through sample topics in library and information science can help you brainstorm your own ideas more effectively. Take the time to scan such resources and choose a topic that you can convincingly discuss and analyze. A good source for potential research paper topics and paper help is mypaperwriter.com , also papers written by past students as well as reputed works in the field.

Researching a Dissertation/Thesis Topic

Other research tips.

  • Submitting a Thesis/Dissertation

Marie desJardins suggests, "When you first start reading up on a new field, ask your advisor or a fellow student what the most useful journals and conference proceedings are in your field, and ask for a list of seminal or 'classic' papers that you should definitely read."

In addition to discussions with your advisor and strategies such as following your interests and searching the important article databases in your discipline as well as the UCLA Library Catalog, other suggestions include:

  • Read a review article, which you can find by using the "article type" field in an article database. Look at the "future research" section at the end to find possible topics.
  • Use the auto-alert feature that many article databases have, which runs a search you set up periodically and emails you the results.
  • Explore Databases by Subject ; sometimes work on a topic is being done in another field or research from another discipline may enhance your work.
  • Search ProQuest Dissertations & Theses to see if anyone has already written on the topic you are interested in. The object is to find nothing—which would indicate that you have an original idea to pursue.
  • Another place to search for dissertations is  OATD.org (Open  Access Theses and Dissertations) ,

DesJardins also suggests that you start a journal of your research activities and ideas, keep files of the papers you read, and create an an online bibliography.

  • Use bibliographic management software such as EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley or Reference Manager to create and manage a working bibliography of references; many article databases can format citations. Find out more at an upcoming Library workshop .
  • Cite sources accurately and ethically; find guidelines on the Library's Avoiding Plagiarism guide.
  • Schedule a consultation with a librarian; a list of subject specialists is available online.

The following are general tips to help as you develop your dissertation proposal and prepare for oral exams and thesis defense.

  • Search for books on a topic in the UCLA Library Catalog or UC Library Search , which includes holdings from all 10 UC campuses.
  • Use the subject headings links in catalog records.

                Get it at UC

  • Submit a purchase recommendation to request that the Library buy an item.
  • Visit the Graduate Writing Center at the UCLA Graduate Student Resource Center .
  • Use bibliographic software , e.g. EndNote, Endnote Basic or Zotero , to create and maintain a working bibliography of references. Many article databases can format citations; attend an upcoming Library Workshop .
  • Cite sources ethically and accurately – Bruin Success With Less Stress ; Avoiding Plagiarism
  • Consultations with real librarians; find subject specialists and make an appointment.
  • Alternatively, use email reference service. You can specify to which library the question will go, to ensure the subject expertise you need; approximately 48 hours turnaround.
