Leave

Cross-cultural misunderstandings about in Alex Herron’s atmospheric fable about a young woman looking for her roots in a far-off land. A thriller dressed up as a horror film, perhaps to please Shudder, Leave is the first serious venture into fiction for the director, who is best known for his music videos – and, indeed, it uses the black metal scene as a backdrop in places. Although most of the action takes place in his native Norway, it’s mostly filmed in English, which other characters speak for the benefit of its American-born heroine, and is squarely aimed at an international audience.

She is Hunter (Alicia von Rittberg), found in a graveyard as a baby in an overblown opening scene which might have been lifted from one of Herron’s videos. The cross around her neck is interpreted as a Satanic symbol and causes consternation, but Raylan (Clarence Smith), the man who finds her, is undeterred and adopts her himself. Though Smith has little screen time, there’s a natural chemistry between the two actors which persuades us that they have a close, loving relationship – so much so that she can’t bear to tell him about her longing to discover her biological origins. After saying goodbye to him prior to driving to Georgetown for college, she takes a detour and catches a plane, planning to spend a few days in Norway chasing up the results of a DNA test.

Copy picture

Initially, this proves difficult. People don’t seem to want to talk about her mother, Anna (Maria Alm Norell), and before long she learns that it’s because she disappeared. In fact, her mother’s boyfriend Kristian (Morten Holst) is a long term psychiatric patient, believed to have killed her. It’s distressing news for a young woman whose sheltered life has left her unprepared for the cruelties of the wider world, but she bears up well, deciding to continue her quest nonetheless and accepting an invitation to stay with her biological grandparents, Torstein (Stig R Amdam) and Lillian (Ragnhild Gudbrandsen). They are part of a close-knit clan inhabiting a small village where life revolves around the church and traditional forms of labour. Hunter’s cousin, Stian (Herman Tømmeraas), makes no secret of his frustration with this small world, but his willingness to exploit Hunter for his own ends means she cannot be sure if she can trust him, even as she begins to suspect that something is wrong in this picture postcard setting.

What follows owes less to the tradition of Midsommar and Sacrifice , which expand on Scandinavian traditions to scare prospective tourists, and more to the internally-focused wave of films and books which have been emerging from the social margins, over the past two decades, to criticise conservative elites. Though there are hints at supernatural influence, the horror stems entirely from human behaviour, its rootedness in patriarchal interpretations of religious ideas presenting a pointed contrast to Hunter’s female-focused quest to understand her origins. Ideas of heritage, duty and belonging come to the fore, whilst Hunter’s horror at the idea of committing aggressive acts – as distinct from an inability to do so – serves as a reminder that there are more sophisticated approaches available than simply trying to replace one person’s violence with another’s.

Well structured and benefiting from appropriately moody cinematography by Sjur Aarthun, the film is ably carried by the German-born von Rittberg. It stumbles a little at the end, which manages to be both rushed and dragged out, and the tacking on of horror trappings sometimes gets annoying, but there’s a solid story underneath which will appeal to many viewers regardless of genre. The title is clumsy, its justification clumsier, but don’t let that put you off. Herren has done well enough to leave viewers looking forward to his next narrative work.

Starts off as a rather intriguing moody supernatural mystery thriller centered around a young woman seeking information about her birth parents and family. More characters are introduced which keeps things rolling. Then the douchiest fucktard of a character appears causing the film to shift into a rapey psychological thriller for a short time before morphing back into a mystery thriller with supernatural elements. The ending is fairly tense but I was mostly disconnected by then.

It's nothing special overall and drags in the middle. It suffers the same fate alot of films suffer from these days of being overlong. The cast of characters aren't particularly interesting either. Forgettable but watchable.

On one hand, I'm exhausted with these new Shudder releases that are dramas with slight horror overtones.

On the other hand, I'm glad the Gothic storytelling genre is still alive and well.

What's so consistently compelling about neurotic females as unreliable narrators? Why must she always explore huge houses with secret passages and trap doors? Why is the ghost always trying to help her but is terribly misunderstood?

Maybe the great big house full of secrets is a bit of a storytelling conceit, meant to extrapolate the larger labyrinth of the neurotic human mind; the Governness in The Turn of the Screw cared for children that were not her own and felt the enormous pressure to perform and care for…

A draggy Norwegian "horror" movie that should really change its title or else you get people taking easy shots at like "Leave this alone" or something like that.

Will scare you if you're terrified of scenes where people ask questions. Otherwise you'll just be bored.

The second half sucked the wind out of me with one halfhearted twist laid into another, coupled with shoddy editing and a dull ending, undermining what was an otherwise intriguing Norwegian tale at the start of a woman trying to find out why she was abandoned in a cemetery as a baby

Leave had some good thrills to it coming toward the ending but it felt more like a mystery drama than a horror thriller.

This will have some familiar vibes on a person searching for the truth of their family/life. However the cast of characters do make the journey well worth the watch. It will be a bit slow pace through the first half of this movie but it'll start coming together coming down to the finale.

Overall this was a slightly decent watch. This wasn't a bad watch but it won't be an entertaining one for everyone as the scary moments feel light and the ending wasn't really a strong one. Just the same I can't help but feel this would be paired well with Son (2021) .

Leave [2022] – Shudder Review (3/5)

LEAVE on Shudder is a new horror thriller about finding your roots. And, due to the genre, it’s also about finding something awful. This movie plays out mostly in Norway. Don’t worry though, English is spoken throughout. Read our full  Leave  movie review here!

LEAVE is a new horror thriller on Shudder. A huge mystery in the middle of the plot deals with both religion and a desire to know where you’re from. Obviously, finding your roots is no picnic when the genre is horror and thriller. However, it isn’t all bad either, and it evolves in a very organic way.

In similar and very different ways, we’ve seen this story play out in movies such as Attachment  (also on Shudder ) and  The Creeping . Stories that focus on how family can both save and doom you. Also, yes, this one does have supernatural elements (just as the two mentioned did). Definitely worth checking out for most horror fans.

Continue reading our Leave  movie review below. Find the movie on Shudder from March 17, 2023.

A Scandinavian searching for her roots

Hunter White (Alicia von Rittberg) is found abandoned in a cemetery as an infant. She’s wrapped in a blanket with what appears to be Satanic symbols. Also, she’s wearing a necklace that looks like an upside-down crucifix of religious origin.

After a quick DNA test online, Hunter finds out she’s almost entirely Scandinavian. This – paired with a few other clues – takes her to Norway, where most of the story plays out. However, if you’re not a fan of movies that are in a foreign [as in not English] language, you can still watch this.

English is spoken by everyone. Not in the obnoxious way of Domino  or The Snowman, where everyone speaks English with a Scandinavian accent. No, it’s simply because most people in Scandinavia can speak English, so if you approach someone and talk to them in English, they will answer in English.

Our main character may be Scandinavian in her DNA, but she grew up in the US, so she only speaks English. Very little Norwegian is spoken, but it’s both translated via subtitles  and  often spoken as well when someone translates for our main character, Hunter White.

Leave (2022) – Review | Shudder Horror

Intriguing characters and a solid plot

I really don’t want to give away too much of the plot in  Leave . Discovering how it’s all connected is what makes this movie so interesting to watch. Well, that and the characters that are all very intriguing. Also, there is something supernatural in the story. A spirit of sorts that seems to be warning Hunter to leave!

And yes, everything will be explained so the ending of  Leave  on Shudder is a very satisfying one in that sense.

The cast has a few familiar faces if you’ve watched some of the most popular Scandinavian productions in recent years. There’s Herman Tømmeraas from  Ragnarok (and Skam ) who plays a bit of a jerk, but you can see why. To a point anyway. Also, as someone helping Hunter, you’ll see Ellen Dorrit Petersen of the  amazing Thelma  (2017) and  The Innocents  (2021) .

In the all-important lead role of Hunter White, it’s Alicia von Rittberg. She isn’t actually from Norway but from Germany. However, she certainly looks very Scandinavian and as she isn’t speaking Norwegian anyway, it makes no difference. Also, Alicia von Rittberg ( Fury ) delivers a really good performance in Leave .

Watch  Leave  on Shudder!

Alex Herron is the director of  Leave  and prior to this horror thriller, he has worked more in the music industry. Still as a director, but working on TV series special  On Record . He directed episodes featuring bands such as Blink 182, Green Day, and Deftones. Also, he’s done quite a few music videos for various artists. Winning many awards in the process.

And yes, Alex Herron is from Norway. So is Thomas Moldestad, the screenplay writer. He previously co-wrote the screenplay for one of my favorite Norwegian horror movies Cold Prey / Fritt Vilt (2006) which was his feature film debut as a screenwriter. He wrote that movie with Martin Sundland and director Roar Uthaug ( Troll ).

With this new movie, Thomas Moldestad manages to create a very engaging story. Very importantly, it isn’t just the main character that is interesting. No, every single character is there for a reason and brings something to the table. Or story, as it were. Either in terms of emotion or to actually move the plot along.

I didn’t expect much from  Leave as it sounded like something we might have watched a few times before. However, I was pleasantly surprised and would give this 3½ out of 5 if we did half-ratings here as well.

LEAVE is streaming exclusively on Shudder on March 17, 2023.

Director: Alex Herron Writer: Thomas Moldestad Cast: Alicia von Rittberg, Herman Tømmeraas, Stig R. Amdam, Maria Alm Norell

An abandoned infant is found in a cemetery in the United States. The child is wrapped in a blanket with satanic symbols. A Wolf’s Cross pendant hangs around her neck. 20 years later: Hunter is obsessed with finding out why she was abandoned and who her biological parents are. A genetic test, the blanket and the Wolf’s Cross lead her to Norway. Hunter is closing in on the terrifying truth, but visions of a dark figure warn her: LEAVE!

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!

leave movie review 2022

Now streaming on:

Park Chan-wook doesn’t make films that feel as traditional as the first hour of “Decision to Leave.” Anyone who knows that this is a movie from the director of “Oldboy” and “ The Handmaiden ” will be looking closely at the relatively straightforward thriller in front of them and trying to figure how it’s going to turn chaotic. The truth is that the first half of this film, despite its very strong craft, has a script that could have been a Bruce Willis erotic thriller in the 1990s with barely a rewrite. It’s another story of a good cop falling for one of his suspects and making the kind of mistakes that happen in thrillers when officers stop using logic. Of course, “Decision to Leave” does take a turn, although I wonder if it will be sharp enough for Park’s rabid fans. To this viewer, it develops into a pretty nifty piece of genre work, a thriller that’s expertly made even if it doesn’t quite hum like the best Park films. The fact that a good, well-made thriller feels almost like a disappointment given this creator’s pedigree is just a testament to the work he’s produced before.

Hae-jun (Park Hae-il) burns the candle at both ends as a Busan detective who has a “weekend marriage” with his wife in Ipo, meaning he’s only there when he’s not working cases. They seem happy enough but also have to keep discussing how they’re making this union work—never a good sign. That’s when Hae-jun meets Seo-rae (the excellent Tang Wei ), the Chinese wife of a mountain climber who just fell from his favorite peak. Or did he?

Hae-jun’s partner immediately suspects Seo-rae; Hae-jun himself is quick to defend her. It was probably an accident or maybe even a suicide, right? This beguiling, elusive woman couldn’t be a murderer. And Hae-jun gets drawn into more than just the case as he surveils Seo-rae and becomes obsessed with her quirks. As he crosses the professional line to learn more about Hae-jun, he starts to make mistakes, and Park cleverly embeds focus issues into his story, whether it’s the morning fog of Ipo or the eye drops that Hae-jun has to use to clear up his blurred vision. He’s not seeing things right.

And then, of course, there’s a turn. It’s impossible to discuss the second half of “Decision to Leave” without spoilers so I won’t divulge details, but it echoes the first in increasingly fascinating ways. There’s another mystery that’s thrust into Hae-jun’s life and it forces him to rethink every decision he made in the first case and what matters to him now. Park plays with elements of not just noir but the old-fashioned romance movies that Seo-rae likes to watch. He basically sets these characters up, defining them in the first half, and then bounces them off each other in unexpected ways in the second half, ultimately leading to a rewarding thriller even if it lacks the sharp edges we’ve come to expect from Park.

Don’t get me wrong. This is not a mainstream, happy departure for Park Chan-wook. He’s still fascinated by the lengths, usually violent, that people will go to for emotionally irrational reasons. He really sets up Hae-jun as a rational creature so he can then unmoor him from his routines and see what happens. And he’s wonderfully playful here with the theme of communication—Seo-rae speaks Korean but sometimes has to use a translator app from her native Chinese, highlighting how these people aren’t really speaking to one another in a direct manner. I almost wanted more of this playful spirit, more of a sense that these are two people who become embroiled in a dangerous situation who can never really see each other through “ The Mist ,” which happens to be the name of Seo-rae’s favorite song.

Park is consistently juggling fascinating ideas in at least the back half of “Decision to Leave,” and he’s undeniably sharp in terms of craft, but he’s often, especially in the first half, restrained by the very familiar plot of the cop who tries to save the wrong suspect, a movie we have seen roughly 80 times. And even when he starts to unleash his storytelling, I feel like there’s a dirtier, less polished version of “Decision to Leave,” maybe one that Park would have made earlier in his career, that feels like more of a gut punch and less of a formal exercise. The latter is fun enough to recommend. The former is where great movies decide to stay.

Leave (2023) Movie Ending, Explained: What does Hunter discover about her origin, and is she able to escape the horrifying truth?

Written by Thomas Moldestad and directed by Norweigian director Alex Herron, “Leave” (2023) stars Alicia von Rittberg, Herman Tømmeraas, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, and Stig R. Amdam. In the film, we follow a young woman’s journey to uncover her roots after being left as a baby at a cemetery wrapped in a cloth adorned with sinister satanic symbols. As she delves deeper into the mystery of her past, an ominous and wicked presence warns her to depart from her quest.

The trend of combining rock metal music with the horror genre is becoming a big cliché. “Leave”   is simply a movie that lacks coherence and fails to give adequate depth to its characters. To top that off, the poor editing makes it challenging for the viewer to sit through. Despite attempting to portray past traumas, patriarchal norms, and foolish religious beliefs that stifle women’s spirits, the film falls short of delivering a strong message.

High On Films in collaboration with Avanté

The protagonist is seen struggling to put her life’s puzzle together, but her poor decision-making skills make it a frustrating watch. It is regrettable that the film’s writer/director did not invest more time in crafting a tighter script. The horror genre is an excellent medium to address societal issues like childhood trauma, PTSD, and family drama, but this particular film doesn’t quite get there.

If you are curious to know what happens in the movie, here’s a detailed explanation for you to read.

Leave (2023) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

The opening scene of the Shudder Original “Leave” features a distressed woman making a frantic 911 call about a crying baby. Officer Raylan White is dispatched to a nearby cemetery, where he discovers a beautiful baby left alone at night. With no one around, he takes the child into his care and notices that the baby is wrapped in a blanket adorned with demonic symbols and wearing a satanic cross. Raylon decides to adopt the child and names her Hunter.

Several years later, Hunter searches through the attic and discovers the blanket and cross tucked away in a box. She realizes that she has been searching for answers about her abandonment and hopes that these items may provide a connection to her birth parents. As her adoptive father calls her, Hunter takes these items with her hoping to uncover the truth behind her past.

Despite her father’s belief that she is headed to Georgetown for college, Hunter has different plans. She sets out on a journey to Norway in hopes of discovering the identity of her birth mother and finding the answers she seeks. As she purchases a train ticket in Norway, Hunter notices a shadowy figure following her (but obviously, she ignores it!)

After arriving at the hotel, Hunter delves into the various details she has researched about her origin and the woman who may be her mother. She carefully examines the information, hoping to uncover clues that could lead her to the truth. As Hunter continues her search, she notices that the blanket she was wrapped in as a child belonged to someone who attended a metal concert.

As Hunter continues to unravel the mystery of her past, she has a startling vision. She sees herself being pursued by a shadowy figure that bursts through flames of fire, relentlessly approaching her. This eerie and unsettling vision leaves Hunter shaken and wondering what it could mean for her search.

Who are Hunter’s birth parents?

Later that evening, Hunter becomes fixated on the singer of a Norwegian black metal band, Cecilia, while at a bar. As Cecilia begins to notice Hunter’s gaze, she approaches her to inquire about her curious behavior. However, Hunter quickly changes the subject and offers to buy Cecilia another beer, successfully diverting her attention.

After Cecilia leaves, Hunter covertly takes Cecilia’s beer bottle with her to examine it in her hotel room. However, on her way back, she is followed by Cecilia’s bodyguard, who grows suspicious of Hunter’s actions. Eventually, the bodyguard confronts Hunter and learns that she believes Cecilia may be her birth mother.

The next day, Hunter and Cecilia sit down to discuss the previous night’s events. Cecilia explains that she had sent her bodyguard to follow Hunter, believing her to be another crazy fan. However, Hunter soon reveals that she has been searching for her birth mother and discovers she is 99% Scandinavian after taking a DNA test. Despite Cecilia confirming that she is not her mother, they continue to talk and share information about their lives. During their conversation, Cecilia realizes that Hunter is the daughter of Kristian, the band’s former bass player, and his partner Anna, who used to hang out with the band.

What happened to Anna and Kristian?

Cecilia confides in Hunter that Anna had taken the baby and disappeared when she was born. It caused Kristian to suffer a mental breakdown because there were past incidents where Anna threatened to harm the baby. Kristian searched for Anna for a considerable amount of time and eventually found her, after which he locked her inside a church and set it on fire, resulting in Anna’s death. Kristian was convicted of brutally murdering Anna and sentenced to 21 years. However, he was later diagnosed with schizophrenia, so he was transferred to a mental hospital.

In a rush, Hunter packs her bag and heads to the hospital to visit Kristian, who is allowed to have his own visitors, unlike in prison. To gain access to Kristian, Hunter pretends to be a journalism student conducting research on Norwegian Black Metal. During their meeting, Hunter begins to inquire about Kristian’s personal life, particularly his relationship with Anna. This puzzles Kristian, as he initially assumed Hunter was interested in discussing music. However, when Kristian notices the cross around Hunter’s neck, he demands to know her true identity. He becomes angry and stands up, prompting the guards to remove him from the room to ensure Hunter’s safety.

What do the cross and the symbolic shawl refer to?

Upon meeting her father, Hunter becomes even more determined to uncover information about her mother. During a conversation with Cecilia, Hunter inquires about the shawl and cross she is wearing. Cecilia explains that the cross is not satanic but a wolf’s cross from Norse mythology, a common belief in Norway.

Additionally, Cecilia informs Hunter that Anna used to keep a diary and suggests that Anna’s family may be able to help in her search for answers. With this new lead, Hunter obtains the location of Anna’s family from Cecilia and sets out to meet them.

What does Hunter find about Anna’s family?

Hunter arrives at her mother’s family home and is greeted by Anna’s aunt, Lillian, followed by her husband, Olav, and a rather unsettling cousin named Stian. Hunter discovers that her grandfather, Torstein, is still alive through her interactions with them.

Hunter is invited by Lillian to stay at their home, and after dinner, she retires to her room. During her sleep, the exact shadowy figure comes to haunt her, and hunter wakes up only to find no one in the room. The following day, she visits Torstein and asks if he has any diary that Anna kept to herself. Her grandfather refuses to say he never went through her things as it caused him too much pain. On her way back to Lillian’s place, she comes across Stian. He convinces her that the family has more history than she can imagine as he accompanies her back to Torstein’s house, hoping they can somehow get inside it.

However, Stian receives a call from his friend, leaving Hunter alone to do the dreadful task – of breaking into her grandfather’s place. When she gets inside through the backdoor, she makes it through Torstein’s room. She then goes to the attic, goes through old things, and finds a diary. While going through the journal, she hears Torstein’s car pull over. She rushes downstairs but finds herself at a spot where she sees the ghost following her. The spirit touches her cross locket, and she has a flashback of what could have gone wrong in this house.

Meanwhile, we also learn that the family had a strong religious background, as evidenced by Torstein’s inquiry about Hunter’s religious beliefs during a special moment they shared. Additionally, Stian disclosed that the family had a troubling history, including the death of Torstein’s wife due to a fall down the stairs, the suicide of Stian’s aunt by wrist-slitting, and the sudden disappearance of his sister when he was only four years old. Hunter discovered that all of these tragic incidents involved women who had died prematurely. Stian informed her that she was now the only surviving female member of the family. Moreover, Hunter learned that her mother, Anna, had joined a Black Metal group and perished in a church fire, adding to her family’s long list of female fatalities.

As Hunter gazes upon the charred figure of a woman approaching her, memories flood back to a horrifying scene of a woman being burned alive in a church, causing her to lose her footing and tumble down the attic stairs. Upon noticing the diary, Torstein discovers her lying unconscious and swiftly confiscates it and orders her to leave the family home. Although Hunter bids farewell to Lilian and her family, she remains determined to uncover the truth. Hunter seeks refuge with Stian on his houseboat, and they devise a plan to sneak back into Torstein’s house and retrieve the diary. However, during their search, Hunter catches Stian stealing money and confronts him, prompting him to lash out and attack her. In a moment of self-defense, Hunter strikes him in the head, causing him to fall and hit his head on the countertop before landing face-first in a pool of his blood. Meanwhile, Lillian and Olaf spot strange flickering lights from Torstein’s home and investigate, only to discover their son’s lifeless body. Hunter flees the scene before anyone can see her, grappling with the weight of the unfolded events.

Why does Hunter visit her father again? Who is Liv?

Hunter turns to Cecilia and requests her to translate the contents of her mother’s diary. However, Hunter soon discovered that the journal did not belong to Anna but to her friend – Lillian’s daughter. Overwhelmed with confusion, Hunter confronted Kristian again and revealed her true identity to him. Kristian was visibly emotional and warned Hunter not to return to the dangerous family home. In a surprising revelation, Kristian disclosed that Anna had never wanted to keep her baby, as it was a girl. As Hunter prepared to leave, Kristian shouted “Liv,” which was actually Hunter’s real name, given to her by Anna and also the name of Lillian’s daughter. Hunter vowed to seek answers to her questions and departed, leaving Kristian behind.

After sneaking into Torstein’s residence through a window, Hunter stumbles upon a hidden passageway concealed behind a portrait. Inside the passageway, she discovers a key that unlocks a door leading to a room filled with various boxes and a blood-stained floor. As she proceeds further into the room, she discovers yet another door, behind which she finds a woman screaming in terror at the sight of her. The woman is revealed to be Anna, who had not actually died as previously believed but was instead chained to her bed. This revelation shocks Hunter.

Leave (2023) Movie Ending, Explained:

What does hunter discover about her origin, and is she able to escape the horrifying truth.

As Anna learned about Hunter’s presence, she was initially shocked and overjoyed, but the fear soon set in as she worried about the possibility of someone discovering Hunter’s whereabouts. In a hurry, she urged Hunter to leave, but Olaf walked in before Hunter could process what was happening. However, Anna and Hunter were able to overpower him. As they caught their breath, Torstein stormed into the room and attacked Hunter with a rod, rendering her unconscious.

As Hunter lay unconscious, she vividly envisioned Torstein speaking to his wife about how Satan had taken over Liv’s body, but there was still hope for Anna. Torstein proceeded to take Liv to the church and burn her alive, which explains the ghostly apparition of the burnt woman. Furthermore, Anna was not murdered but instead held captive by her father.

When Hunter regained consciousness, she found herself tied to a chair with Torstein standing before her, ranting about the sinfulness of women and how they needed to be “cleansed” of their evil. He then proceeded to brand Hunter’s body with a hot poker to exorcise the supposed Satan from her.

Suddenly, a commotion outside the room caught their attention, and it turned out that Kristian had arrived and taken down Olaf. Kristian fought Torstein, ultimately defeating him, but not before sustaining fatal wounds from Torstein’s knife. Anna and Kristian apologized to each other, but their reunion was short-lived as Kristian’s injuries proved fatal.

Hunter and Anna flee the house, but Anna grows exhausted and can no longer continue running. After leaving her to search for help, Torstein comes across Anna, holding an axe and questioning her about Hunter’s whereabouts. Upon finding Hunter, he strikes her down, leaving her unconscious, and proceeds to drag her across the ground. However, Anna regains consciousness and calls him a coward, showing him the cross she had been wearing.

Liv’s ghost appears, tormenting Torstein as Hunter emerges with his axe to kill him. Torstein ultimately meets his demise at Hunter’s hand, and Liv’s ghost disappears, seemingly at peace. Hunter then returns to Anna, who apologizes for abandoning her and reveals that she left Anna in a cemetery, hoping someone would find her. As Anna is recuperating at the hospital, Hunter’s adoptive father arrives, leading to a joyous reunion between father and daughter. The film ends on that note.

9 Biggest Changes Netflix's Leave The World Behind Makes To The Book

12 biggest unanswered questions after leave the world behind's ambiguous ending, all 6 real-life disasters referenced in leave the world behind, explained.

WARNING! This article contains spoilers for Leave the World Behind!

  • The film adaptation of Leave the World Behind made creative adjustments to the ending, including omissions of what happens in the future.
  • The book provided details about the aftermath of the main narrative and what was happening outside the trapped town, but the movie excluded these details, leaving audiences in the same darkness as the characters.
  • The next generation of deer turned unicorn white, numerous people died, the Thorne family matriarch died in San Diego, and other towns in the country were oblivious to the disaster for some time.

The end of Netflix's 2023 movie Leave the World Behind left out some crucial details from the book about what happens to the world in the future. Leave the World Behind is an adaptation of the 2020 best-selling novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam, which paints a picture of how the world would end. The film's ending left plenty of questions unanswered that the book cleared up , including what caused Archie's illness , where the glass-shattering sound came from, who was behind the attacks, and why they were happening — thus inspiring numerous theories from audiences.

While it makes sense considering the movie lacks narration or future insight by the characters, Netflix's Leave the World Behind does omit some answers to big questions that were included in the book. The book frequently featured explanations of what happened after the events of the main narrative, as well as what was occurring outside the town in which the families were trapped. By not including these book details, audiences are kept guessing and just as much in the dark as Leave the World Behind 's characters .

In making the leap from page to screen, Sam Esmail implements some big changes, rendering Netflix's Leave the World Behind different from the book.

8 A Huge Number Of People Died

People died in gruesome ways.

The specific cause of the apocalypse in Leave the World Behind is deliberately left ambiguous, though it's clear it's one that left an incredible amount of destruction and suffering in its wake. Leave the World Behind 's ending did not show the number of people who died. While the Scotts and the Sandfords were safe in their vacation home, other people were not so lucky. The book reveals that some people died by suicide, whereas others died while driving into New York City, which had many unclaimed corpses rotting in the streets.

When the hospitals lost power, all the babies in the neonatal care unit died hours after the blackout. Shockingly, a mother in Maryland did the unimaginable and killed her two daughters to save them from whatever was out there that was causing the end of the world as they knew it. It's entirely possible that hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people were killed during the events of the movie.

7 Deer Turned Unicorn White

Deer from the next generation became white because of intergenerational trauma.

Leave the World Behind manages to stand out from other movies about the end of the world due to some incredibly unique visual moments, though some of these also create questions for the audience despite how memorable they are. One of the biggest mysteries in Leave the World Behind is the creepy deer . In Leave the World Behind , the appearance of the deer is a warning sign from nature that the world is about to change.

The uncharacteristic appearance of so many deer resulted from a cyberattack that changed their migration patterns.

The movie doesn't fully explain why the deer turn white in Leave the World Behind, but the book provides some answers. The uncharacteristic appearance of so many deer resulted from a cyberattack that changed their migration patterns. The book reveals that years after Rose's family dies, the next generation of deer is born as white as unicorns. A geneticist would discover that the deer turned white because of intergenerational trauma that came from them losing their home.

The ending of Leave the World Behind leaves several big questions unanswered, which contributes to the overall themes of the dystopian film.

6 Nadine Thorne Dies In A Military Camp

The thornes couldn't get back home.

The ending of the Leave the World Behind book was notably bleaker than the movie, and traded the ambiguity the film rested on for harrowing and upsetting revelations about what happens to the characters — and Nadine's eventual fate is tragic. While Rose concluded Leave the World Behind by watching Friends at the Thornes' house, she had no idea that the family was at a San Diego airport trying to find their way back home.

Since there was a nationwide emergency that meant that no domestic flights were operating, the Thornes would never see their home on Long Island again. Nadine, the matriarch of the Thorne family, would get cancer and subsequently die at the tent camp the army had built. Her body, like so many others, would be burned, before the bodies started outnumbering the people who had to burn them.

5 Incarcerated Men Were Left To Die

Prisoners in waycross, georgia died in the correctional facility.

The tragic story of Leave the World Behind is essential to today's world because it paints the story of how humanity would react when faced with impending doom. The less fortunate people in society are usually the ones who suffer the most. While this was of course implied in the movie, the book went into greater detail about some of the distressing fates that befell some of them, including prisoners who remained locked in their cells during Armageddon.

After Leave the World Behind 's story, the wind and rain eventually killed the prisoners

In Waycross, Georgia at a correctional facility, the 40 people who were part of the staff of the prison left 1500 men to face the elements alone . After Leave the World Behind 's story, the wind and rain eventually killed the prisoners, and the staff justified their death by claiming that the prisoners were bad people, so their deaths were not something to mourn over.

4 Even More Deer Appeared After Leave The World Behind

Herds of deer began migrating to a safer place.

The deer were one of the most unique aspects of Leave the World Behind, and in the book they feature much more prominently than the movie. In Leave the World Behind , Rose had only seen a few deer before their herd grew to an astonishing number. A few miles from the Scotts' house, more herds of deer joined each other and began migrating to a place where their animal instincts told them they would be safe.

No one knew why there was such a large number of deer or where they were going, but with everything that was happening, the deer migration was not surprising. Seeing as the deer survived, and their next generation turned white, it's safe to say that they knew what they were doing since, unlike most humans, they managed to survive the end of the world.

3 Other Towns In The Country Had No Idea What Was Happening

People in new mexico and idaho did not know the danger they were in.

One of the most chilling aspects of the story of Leave the World Behind is that, without the use of electronic communication, an apocalypse could slowly creep across a vulnerable world that would otherwise have had plenty of time to prepare. Leave the World Behind mostly focused on New York, because it seemed like it was the most affected part of the country. While there was a blackout in the city and corpses started piling up, towns in more remote states like Idaho and New Mexico remained ignorant of what was happening in other parts of the country .

Eventually, however, the whole country would be affected, and they would know why the governors had declared a state of emergency.

People in these towns continued living their lives as though nothing was amiss, as they had far less reliance on mass communication and transportation. They went to work and attended to their businesses even though they did not fully understand why the satellites were down. Eventually, however, the whole country would be affected, and they would know why the governors had declared a state of emergency.

Sam Esmail's Leave the World Behind paints a realistic depiction of an imminent & coordinated societal collapse, sourced by a few real-life disasters.

2 The President Was Safe

The president of the free world was in his bunker.

Since there was a blackout and all satellite communication was cut down, the people in the country had no idea what was going on. No one knew if it was a terrorist attack or something much worse because there was no one to tell them. While all this was happening, a state of emergency was declared and the president of the free world was hidden away in a bunker beneath the White House for his safety.

With former U.S. President Barack Obama producing Leave the World Behind and assisting with the script, his insight into how the government would react makes the movie simultaneously more realistic and terrifying. Seeing as the world was ending in Leave the World Behind , no one outside the White House gave the president a second thought because everyone was too busy trying to stay alive and keep their families safe. The movie doesn't even reveal the president's identity within its fictional world, and the only direct mention of a president by the characters is by Rose, when she describes a scene from The West Wing series.

1 Rose Went Back To Her Family

Rose gathered supplies for her family from the thorne house.

One of the most touching moments in Leave the World Behind was mysteriously absent from the movie. While many of the characters had tragic fates (even after the events of the story), there was at least some happiness for Amanda and Rose. When Archie got sick , Rose left the Scotts' house to look for supplies in neighboring houses because, unlike her family, she understood the signs that the world was ending and took heed.

Amanda, who thought she would never see her daughter again, cries with joy when they are reunited.

In the movie adaptation of Leave the World Behind , Rose, who is obsessed with Friends , is shown in the Thornes' house watching the final episode of the show. However, the movie leaves out that Rose goes back to her family after ransacking the house and taking medication, batteries, and band-aids. In the book, Amanda, who thought she would never see her daughter again, cries with joy when they are reunited.

She boards a cruise ship with old friends, who inspired her best-known work. Tensions are strong. It looks great -- Soderbergh uses crisp, natural light -- and most of the dialogue is improvised. See how Dianne Wiest, Candice Bergen, Lucas Hedges and the rest of the impeccable cast have fun with that.

No Sudden Move (2021)

A movie from Steven Soderbergh, the great director behind Erin Brockovich, Ocean's Eleven and, more recently, Logan Lucky? Twists, thrills and desperate characters populate this crime thriller set in 1950s Detroit. When a seemingly simple job gets out of hand, a group of criminals must work together to uncover what's really going on. Take in the incredible cast: Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm and Amy Seimetz. While the plot can be a little convoluted and some won't be able to get past the fish-eye lens cinematography, Soderbergh's sense of humor and immersive direction make this crime caper an entertaining night in.

Robert Pattinson steps out as Batman in this moody superhero flick directed by Matt Reeves. The movie takes place in a perpetually gray and rain-soaked Gotham City, where Bruce Wayne starts to seek out a murderer with an affinity for riddles. The Suicide Squad (2021)

Over-the-top violence abounds in this DC film about supervillains who agree to help the US government in exchange for some time off their prison sentences. Their mission is to destroy something alluded to as Project Starfish, harbored in the fictional island country of Corto Maltese. With a notable cast that includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba and John Cena, 2021's The Suicide Squad is a wickedly entertaining, darkly funny bloodbath that differs from what you usually see in superhero movies. (Peacemaker, a spinoff TV series, is also available on Max.)
