My Rainy Day Experience

When I think of rainy days, it brings back very special memories for me. However, one memory is such which is the closest to my heart. I remember our teacher scheduled a test for us when it started raining heavily.

how to enjoy a rainy day essay

I woke up in the morning with the fear of taking the test for which I was not prepared. I prayed to God for the cancellation of the test. As I was getting ready, it started raining heavily. I got dressed up and went to school with my father, and to my surprise, we came to know the school was closed that day due to a rainy day.

I was on top of the world when I came to know about it. I returned with my father and came back then undressed. Immediately, I changed into my home clothes to go f\and bathe in the rain on my terrace. I played with my siblings a lot in the rain; we made paper boats as well. After we were done, we saw that my mother was making onion fritters. She served them burning hot with chili chutney. We relished the fritters as we watched the rainfall. It was truly one of the most memorable rainy days of mine.

Rainy days offer a perfect opportunity to relax and take a break from the usual routine. People enjoy staying indoors, cozying up with a good book, watching a movie, or spending quality time with family and friends. It is also a great time for reflection, introspection, and creative activities. The sound of raindrops falling on the roof, the smell of wet soil, and the cool breeze create a magical atmosphere that soothes the mind and body.

However, a rainy day can also bring its share of challenges, including the risk of flooding and damage to crops and infrastructure. It is essential to take necessary precautions and stay safe during such times.

Rainy days can be a great time to unwind and relax. There are many ways to celebrate a rainy day, and it all depends on your interests and preferences. The key is to relax, unwind, and appreciate the beauty of nature.

One of the best ways to celebrate a rainy day is to stay indoors, snuggle up with a cosy blanket, and read a book or watch a movie. It is also an excellent time to spend quality time with family and friends. You can play board games, cook a warm meal, or have a cup of hot chocolate together.

Another great way to celebrate a rainy day is to take a walk or a drive in the rain. Put on a raincoat and some rain boots, and enjoy the beauty of nature in the rain. You can also visit a park or a garden and appreciate how the rain transforms the surroundings.

If you enjoy music, you can create a playlist of your favorite songs for a rainy day. Listening to music can enhance your mood and make the day more enjoyable.

Finally, if you enjoy creative activities, you can indulge in some art and craft projects. You can paint, draw, or make something with your hands. Being creative can be a great stress-reliever and a fun way to spend a rainy day.

My Experience

Last year, on a rainy day, I spent the day with my family at home. We started the day by preparing a warm breakfast together, including pancakes and hot cocoa. We then spent the morning playing board games, telling stories, and enjoying each other's company.

In the afternoon, we decided to bake some cookies and listen to music. The rain made the atmosphere cosy and relaxing, and we all felt content spending time together. We also took the time to catch up on some reading, with each family member reading their favourite books.

As the day progressed, the rain became heavier, and we decided to have a cosy family movie night. We picked an action movie, and we all snuggled under blankets and pillows, enjoying the warmth and comfort of our living room.

It was a day filled with warmth, laughter, and love. The rain brought us together, and we all felt grateful for the time we spent together as a family. It was a perfect reminder of how simple pleasures can bring joy and happiness into our lives.

  • For Farmers

Essay 3 (600 Words) – Effects of Rainy Day

Rainy Day is loved by the children and elders and it seems to make their life a little less boring even if it is for only a day. As the drops of water fall on earth so do the creatures become swell with life and joy. In this essay we will go through the effects of a rainy day on rural and urban life, its advantages and also the inconveniences caused.

Effects of Rainy Day

Be it village life or urban life; rainy day affects each one of them in its own way. We go briefly on how the rainy day affects the life of a common villager and a city dweller.

  • On Village Life

Usual days in villages look a bit sleepy than the cities. That’s because, the main occupation of villagers is agriculture, so you don’t have people rushing out to reach offices on time, as in the cities. There are only farmers tending to their fields and a bunch of students headed for their school. If rain occurs, it doesn’t affect everyone much in a village; though it might delay them a little.

Farmers can easily wait for the rain to subside without fearing for any loss; unless the rain is too much to damage their crops. Also, the village residents seem to take a rainy day as usual activity. The children also don’t seem to fear to get wet and enjoy the shower. Unlike the children in the cities, the village children could be easily spotted playing in rain and enjoying the rainy day.

  • On Urban Life

The effects of a rainy day, as felt in urban settlements, are completely different from that of the villages. People here get delayed to their offices and businesses by a good amount of time. In cities time means money; therefore; quite a few city dwellers don’t like a rainy day much. The office goers and the shopkeepers don’t welcome an out of season rainy day, because it means a long delay or loss for them.

Also, the cities having poor infrastructure planning may face water clogging, causing further inconvenience to the people. Also, the essential emergency services get delayed due to water clogging and traffic jams. But, despite the complaints, the people still seem to admire and love the rainy day for the sheer beauty of nature that it reveals.

Advantages of a Rainy Day

The following are the advantages of a rainy day as felt by different sections of the society as well as nature and other living creatures.

  • It replenishes the soil and provides nourishment to the plants.
  • Refills the natural water reserves as well as the groundwater.
  • Provides a much-welcomed respite from the heat for the humans and animals as well.
  • Children get a day off from school and to play in rain.
  • A rainy day is also welcomed by the farmers as it waters their vegetation and replenishes the soil.
  • It provides an opportunity to conserve water through rainwater harvesting.
  • Refills the ponds deep inside natural forests, which is very important for the wildlife.
  • Even a day’s rain could help grow new plants and vegetation.
  • Acts as a natural cleansing agent by washing off dust and dirt from the surface of the earth as well as the air.
  • Gives relief from the heat and make the weather more pleasing.
  • It becomes more easy and enjoyable to work on a rainy day than in sweltering heat.

Rainy day is loved by children as well as elders from all walks of society. Though it causes a little discomfort on several fronts, people still seem to a rainy day.

There are various seasons like summer, winter and monsoon. But out of all my favourite season is monsoon season or the rainy season. I live in a joint family. On the first rain of the season we just run out of our house into the rain giggling and smiling with delight. It feels so refreshing after the sunny days to take cool natural shower in rain. We like to play in the garden as the rain showers pour on us. We sing songs and jump in the muddy puddles to splash water on each other. We fight like cats and dogs on the ground splashing water and sticky mud on each other. Our mothers always shout on us but we just like to ignore and enjoy. Monsoons in India are welcomed with joy as rains provide fresh and breezy atmosphere after the sunny climate. Earth is transformed into a rich green land with blooming flowers dancing and celebrating monsoon. The soothing smell of rain and cooling showers of rain make us feel so fresh.

My Fondest Memory of Rainy Day Last year when I was in 5 th standard, one morning I woke up for school and was getting ready to attend my classes. It was during the monsoon season, the month of July. The weather outside was dark and gloomy. In my mind I was praying to God constantly that if it rains and I don’t have to go to school. After I had my milk and my mother packed my lunchbox, I was ready to leave for school. But it did not rain and I had to go. My dad dropped me to the school. In the classroom, I sat on a seat by the window still expecting it to rain. I felt lazy and sad in the classroom and all my attention was outside the window wishing it rains. My class teacher scolded me for staring outside the window constantly. As the second period that is the Maths class, got over, my wish came true. It started raining and the bonus was that there was no teacher in the class. My eyes sparkled with joy and I jumped off my seat to peep out of the window to enjoy the droplets of rain. I was trying to grasp the drops of rain and it made me extremely happy. Everyone in the class was happy and cheerful. Everyone was jumping, chit-chatting and smiling with joy. Me and some of my classmates tore some pages from our books and made paper boats. Outside the window there were small puddles and we dropped our boats in to the puddles to float. It made us jump and giggle as our boats floated in water. We were grasping the drops of rain from the window and splashing at each other. After a while our Science teacher came in the classroom and every one settled back to their seats. She declared a holiday as the rain was expected to get heavier in some time. We all hopped from our seats with excitement. We packed our bags, got into our raincoats and ran outside the classroom to enjoy the rain. We went back home jumping and dancing in rain.

Conclusion It was one of the best days of my life. Rainy days really bring joy and happiness in everyone’s life.

Rainy Day Serves an Inspiration for Writers and Poets We all read poems, stories and books. There is so much and so beautifully written about the scenic beauty of nature. Writings about rains are obviously more alluring than writings about sunny days or winters. Rainy day is an inspiration for poets primarily because it gives the world, a fresh and new perspective. The everyday world that seems so conventional and colorless suddenly turns so diverse, refreshing, colorful and magical. Poetry is as alluring as the rainy day. Or maybe rains just create the poetic mood, the beautiful scenery, rainbows, background music of raindrops, hot cup of coffee everything inspires writers. Other than the poets, the rainy season is an inspiration for all writers as we have been reading about the beauty and effects of rain in stories and books as well.

For some, it’s an excuse to just be at home and for others to take up new adventures. Some might get too lazy while others might just get creative. Some spend their time cooking aromatic food while others like me spend time eating and gaining weight. All in all, rains are beautiful and bring cheer to life but too much of rain can even be harmful for our nature.

Long Essay on Rainy Day 800 Words

A “Rainy Day” is a day on which the clouds cover the sky and it rains for almost throughout the day. Just a couple of hours of rain isn’t enough to declare a day as “Rainy Day”. It must rain or drizzle for a greater part of the day. Technically, any day when it is raining, could be termed as a rainy day. It need not to be necessarily in monsoon, rather it could occur anytime of the year, depending on the moisture and climatic conditions.

How Does a Rainy Day Feels? A rainy day feels calm, peaceful and serene despite the occasional burst of thunder which it might bring. A rainy day washes the earth, revealing its inner beauty and the life that lay underneath. It’s like that it gives a new lease of life to the whole place. Getting up on a rainy day is like getting up with the beautiful sound of raindrops falling and a cool breeze buzzing past your ears. Such pleasant atmosphere, compels one to cancel all the prior engagements and just relax, letting the cool drizzle fall on your face.

Advantages of a Rainy Day There are several advantages of a rainy day. Firstly it cleans the earth, making everything look fresh and new. The trees those have been looking dull and covered in dust, suddenly become lively, reflecting lush green colour. The same happens with grass, flower, plants etc. They all seem to reveal their inner beauty, thanks to the rain. On the other note, a rainy day is beneficial to the fauna and also for the agricultural activities. Non domesticated animals, especially those living in forested areas; depend on natural water resources for their supply of water. On a rainy day, the ponds and lakes get a new supply of fresh water, which proves to be a blessing for the thirsty animals. Occasional rainy day is also beneficial to the crops. Farmers also equate one or two spells of shower as equivalent to a couple of bags of fertilizers for crops and fruit plants. It also saves the farmers a couple of days’ labour of watering the fields. Another advantage of a rainy day is that it cleans the air. When rain drops fall from the sky, they bring down with them, all the dust and other unwanted minute impurities to ground. This indeed makes the air free from impurities and clean and healthy to breathe.

Disadvantages of Rainy Day Despite having several advantages, a rainy day also has certain amount of disadvantages associated with it. It may cause discomfort to daily commuters, and abstain them from getting on time to wherever they are headed. School children, office goers or other commuters might have to delay or even postpone their commute, because of rain. On the other hand, considering the scenario of a populated urban city, with a network of interlinked streets, roads and adjacently constructed buildings; a rainy day could cause discomfort to many with streets submerged in water and overflowing drains. It would be impossible to commute through the streets without getting your shoes wet. Next, those who are most affected by a rainy day are street vendors and small shopkeepers. With the majority of population preferring to stay indoors on a rainy day, these small businessmen suffer financially due to considerably less footfalls than on any usual day.

Things to Do On a Rainy Day If you have decided to postpone your prior engagements and to enjoy the rain, then there are actually plenty of things you can do to spend your own rainy day. The beauty of the rainy day is that it could also be enjoyed sitting in the comforts of your house in the company of family and friends. You just have to choose a spot which offers a full view of the rain with cool breeze swirling through your body. A hot cup of coffee or tea will be an added compliment. You can also cook some hot snacks of your liking, to go with the coffee. If you don’t want to stay indoors, then step out of the house or on to the terrace to let the rain fall over you. This way you get hands on experience of the rain and also will enjoy it as well. But remember to be careful, as sudden exposure to too much of rain can get you sick. If you live in a place with any forest, agricultural field nearby; plan a trip there, to witness the full beauty of the rain and also the earth as it gets cleaned.

Conclusion Rainy Day is like a blessing for the parched earth and its thirsty inhabitants. It gives a new lease of life to earth, animals, humans, trees, crops, plants etc and replenishes the fresh water resources. A rainy day might not have much influence on an individual’s life, but it sure has tremendous usefulness for the nature. The little discomfort that a rainy day causes to some, is weighed much low against the benefits it brings. Therefore, it is wise to spend a rainy day, admiring the beauty of nature and not complaining about the little discomforts.

“I find peace in the rain”-Anonymous

Nature is mighty and powerful in many ways. It astonishes us with its beautiful forms, each equally vibrant and unique in their ways. Rain is one of the most beautiful things presented to us by nature. It makes us happy and evokes a sense of gratitude when we are in a gloomy mood. The dark grey clouds overcast the sky, and it feels like nature has called on for its thunder party. Rainy days are typically different from our normal days.

They hold a special place in our minds because we have tons of memories linked to them. Every person has a fond memory of some incident that took place on a rainy day. After the scorching heat of the summers, we look forward to the oncoming of rain. It quenches the thirst of our planet earth. It also brings us a sigh of relief. People, regardless of their age, enjoy rainy days equally.

My Rainy Day Experience

Rain always brings positivity in my mind and makes the entire day fun. When I look down the memory lane, some of my favourite moments are that of a rainy day. I remember it was the month of May and the sun was merciless. Summer vacations had not yet started. Morning school routine forced me to wake up early in the morning and catch the bus. Every day my morning would begin with an overwhelming sense of frustration, and that particular day, we had to submit our Science project.

Though I was a good student who used to complete all the assignments on time, that project somehow was left undone. I had completely forgotten about it amidst all the other activities, and the sudden realization of submission of an incomplete project was scary as hell. I woke up, brushed my teeth, took a shower and started getting ready for school. The constant fear and anxiety running in my mind were never-ending. I earnestly prayed to God to devise a way for me to tackle this problem.

On my way to the bus stop, I was mostly sad and gloomy. Suddenly, a trickle of water droplet hit my nose. Then a few hit my forehead, which made me realize it is going to rain. I had not anticipated this. By the time I reached the bus stop, the sky was filled with black clouds, and it started to rain. On the one hand, there was this roaring thunderstorm; on the other, my classmates were shrieking with laughter. Their voices echoed in my head, and I realized it was a rainy day. Our classes had been cancelled, and the school was closed for the day.

Perhaps, this is the first time I felt my fear dissipating and peace filling up my heart to its fullest content. I thanked God for this amazing surprise. I joined my friends, and together we started screaming out of joy. We roamed across the street and started making paper boats. These boats merrily floated on the streams of water that covered the streets. I returned home soaked in water. Luckily, my bag was water-proof, and my books weren’t wet.

I changed my clothes and went to my balcony. The trees and plants which had withered due to the scorching sun now looked fresh. They glistened in the rainwater. Birds preened their feather and started flying back to their nest. Everything looks so vibrant. People joined each other in the small tea stalls. Everyone had a smile on his/her face. Some of my friends were still giggling on their way home. I waved goodbye as my mother called me to give her a hand in the kitchen chores.

Animals, too, partake in this celebration; birds sing a little louder, and frogs croak in a chorus. Amidst this, there’s a comforting solitude that encourages reflection. The rain washes away the dust and grime, not just from the physical world, but seemingly from our thoughts as well. It’s a time for rejuvenation, for the earth as much as for the soul, reminding us of the cycle of renewal that governs all life.

Narrative Essay on On a Rainy Day

Rainy days evoke a myriad of emotions in people. Some find the rhythmic patter of raindrops soothing, while others might feel a sense of melancholy or nostalgia. This narrative essay will take you through a particularly memorable rainy day that left an indelible mark on my heart and soul. It was a day that transformed an ordinary monsoon shower into a poignant life lesson, illustrating the unpredictable nature of life and the beauty of finding joy in the smallest moments.

The Morning Prelude

The day began like any other monsoon morning. The sky, a vast expanse of grey, hung heavily over the city. There was a certain chill in the air, a prelude to the impending rain. The weather forecast had predicted thunderstorms, but the exact timing was uncertain. I had always been fascinated by the rain – its ability to wash everything clean, to bring life to the parched earth, and to encapsulate a myriad of stories in every drop. Little did I know, this day would turn into a story of its own, a narrative that would teach me lessons in resilience, joy, and the impermanence of life.

The Sudden Downpour

As the morning gave way to afternoon, the clouds could no longer hold their burden. What started as a gentle drizzle quickly escalated into a torrential downpour. The streets were soon awash with water, creating rivulets that danced and twisted their way along the paths and roads. The sound of the rain beating against the windows was both exhilarating and calming. I decided to step out and experience this spectacle up close, armed with nothing but my raincoat and an insatiable curiosity to immerse myself in the monsoon’s embrace.

An Unexpected Encounter

As I walked through the rain-soaked streets, I noticed a small, shivering puppy under a nearby bush, trying to shield itself from the relentless rain. It looked lost and frightened, its eyes pleading for shelter. Despite the downpour, I felt a warmth spreading through me. I approached the puppy, speaking in gentle tones, and carefully lifted it into my arms. The puppy, though initially apprehensive, soon snuggled against me, seeking comfort and warmth. This unexpected encounter was the beginning of an unspoken bond between two souls, brought together by the rain.

The Walk of Revelations

Holding the puppy close, I continued my walk, my heart lighter with each step. The rain had transformed the world around me into a canvas of vibrant greens and earthy browns, punctuated by the occasional splash of color from a resilient flower. The usual cacophony of city life had been replaced by the symphony of raindrops, the croaking of frogs, and the occasional chirping of birds. It was as if nature had orchestrated this perfect moment for introspection and appreciation.

This walk became a journey of revelations. The rain, with its innate ability to disrupt and cleanse, mirrored the trials and tribulations of life. It reminded me that just as the sun follows the rain, joy follows sorrow, and that the beauty of life lies in its unpredictability and transience. Holding the puppy, a symbol of vulnerability and trust, I realized the importance of compassion and the profound impact of small acts of kindness.

The Return Home

By the time I returned home, the rain had reduced to a gentle drizzle. The puppy, now dry and somewhat more energetic, played at my feet as I prepared a small bed for it. The sense of fulfillment from providing shelter to a helpless creature was unparalleled. That rainy day, which started as an ordinary day, had transformed into a testament to the unexpected joys and lessons that life has to offer.

In conclusion, The rain eventually stopped, leaving behind a world that seemed refreshed and renewed. The experience of that day, however, left a lasting impression on me. It taught me to embrace life’s unpredictability, to find joy in the simple moments, and to extend kindness without expectation. On that rainy day, I not only found a new companion in the little puppy but also discovered new depths to life and myself. Rainy days have since held a special place in my heart, not just for the beauty they bring to the world but for the hidden lessons and unexpected joys they carry with them.

Shaili Contractor

Key Points To Remember When Writing an Essay on Rains for Class 1, 2 and 3

10 lines on a rainy day in english, short essay on a rainy day, long paragraph on a rainy day, what will your child of classes 1, 2 and 3 learn from an essay on a rainy day.

Monsoon is an important season in India, spanning over four months. Rainfall is a significant event for various people, including farmers, industrialists, even city dwellers who wait for the rains to get some respite from the summer heat. Children, too, love the rain and enjoy various events related to it. It is interesting to know about a child’s perspective on rains. Teachers in school often ask students of lower primary classes to write an essay on rain. This assignment requires them to write about their observations and experiences during a rainy day, their knowledge about seasons, how it affects various people and their thoughts and feelings. Children then express these ideas on paper in short and simple sentences. It helps to strengthen their basic grammar foundation and improves their vocabulary. Children will enjoy penning down their fun-filled experiences on this refreshing topic.

When asked to write a paragraph rains, your child needs to remember a few essential points. Let us guide your little one to write a beautiful essay on ‘A Rainy Day’:

  • First, let your child think about the points they want to include.
  • Next, let your child pen down the ideas on paper to form an outline. It will help them cover all the points in the correct sequence while writing the essay.
  • Then, guide your child to write easy-to-read short and simple sentences from each point in the outline.
  • Encourage your child not to get too descriptive about any single idea, which will help them stick to the word count.
  • Guide your child to write with the flow, making them enjoy writing the essay.
  • A few points your child can include are how much they like a rainy day, what all they do in the rain and what they see outside their windows.

A rainy day is always special for a child as it breaks the monotonous routine of all days. Let us guide your child to write a refreshing rainy day essay for classes 1 and 2 in 10 short and simple lines:

  • A rainy day is a fun day.
  • A rainy day comes as a relief after a hot summer day.
  • The animals and birds also enjoy the rain after the scorching summer heat. They also get more water to drink.
  • Plants and trees also get plenty of water during rains and look more green and fresh.
  • Rain may come in a drizzle or a very heavy shower. Light to moderate rain is refreshing, but heavy rain can lead to floods.
  • I always have a nice time during the rains.
  • My all-time favourite activity is to sail paper boats in the rainwater.
  •  Rainfall washes away all the dust from the street.
  • A rainy day is often accompanied by lightning and thunder.
  • Sometimes when it is raining, you can also see a rainbow in the sky.

Children love experiencing rain. Their unique perspective on the season and their observations and experiences of the world around them are interesting to read when they write an essay on ‘A Rainy Day’. However, they may find it challenging to put their ideas in words. Here is a sample essay for children of lower primary classes which will help them write on their own.

Monsoon is my favourite season of the whole year. A rainy day cools down the earth and comes as a much-needed breather after the hot summer days. Humans, animals, birds and trees all rejoice in rainfall. The rains wash away dust from the trees, leaves, fruits, flowers and the whole environment. In India, an agricultural country, the farmers wait all year for the rains. The rainfall determines a good harvest. The absence of rains leads to draught. Too much rain is also bad for crops as it floods the farmlands. In the cities, we have fun on rainy days. We go to the lawns or the terrace and get wet in the rain. We sail bright, colourful paper boats in the water. It is fun to eat hot food during the rains. My dad makes his special khichdi, and we enjoy that along with hot, crispy potato fries sprinkled with black salt. I have the best time on rainy days.

Students of class 3 are expected to pen down their thoughts in a more descriptive essay. They will also have to include some facts and general knowledge about rain and its effect on the earth. Children may find it challenging to elaborate on these ideas. Let us guide your child to write a beautiful long essay on rains with this sample:

Monsoon is a special time of the year. It comes as a refreshing change after the sultry summer months. The rains cool down the earth and provide a respite to everyone. Along with people, the rain comforts animals, birds, and trees. Rainwater is a natural source of water for life on the earth. It is the rains that replenish the water bodies around us. The rains are also significant to the agricultural community in the country. Farmers wait for the rains for a good harvest. They collect the rainwater in the wells and tanks and use it for irrigation. When rainfall is scanty, there can be droughts, and the crops dry out. However, too much rain can also spoil the crops.

I love rainy days. My brother and I go to the terrace with our friends, and we get wet in the rain. It’s a very refreshing feeling. We make paper boats with old newspapers and sail them in the water. We hop on muddy puddles and splash the water without worrying about getting dirty. Our furry friend, Sheru, who lives on the street, joins us in these fun-filled activities. I love the sound of rain and the smell of sodden earth. It’s also very beautiful to see the rain splattering on rooftops. Sometimes you can see raindrops trickling down the fresh green leaves. Raindrops on window panes shine like tiny golden beads when light falls on them. My father takes us out on a drive in the car during light showers.

In cities, too much rain can cause trouble. It floods the low-lying areas, and the streets get waterlogged. Animals and birds face difficulty in getting shelter. My parents leave a gate of our compound open for the stray dogs to come in and take shelter when it rains heavily. Animals also get scared of thunder and lightning during rains. Our pet dog Lucky also gets very scared when the thunder roars. We hold her tight to comfort her. Sometimes, I sit and look outside the window on rainy days, sipping a glass of hot chocolate. Some enjoy the rains while some who work on the streets have difficulties. It is usually fun to stay indoors during rains, but everyone can’t stay home. On the streets, you can see people carrying umbrellas of different designs. Many people are in raincoats. I had seen some street kids put on plastic bags on their heads, trying to save themselves from the rains. Last year we got a few raincoats for such kids. We also distributed umbrellas among some poor people to help them out. I feel happy knowing they will be comfortable now. I enjoy rainy days and always make the most of them.

While building their skills in writing, expression, vocabulary and grammar, your child will learn to think about the given topic and express their opinion on it. They will learn to put their experiences in words and even think about the situation from someone else’s perspective. This topic also presents children with an opportunity to understand certain universal issues they may not have seen themselves. This helps them develop empathy.

We hope the above sample essays help your child pen down a beautiful composition on A Rainy Day.

Essay on Rainy Day

Monsoon is my favorite season and when it rains heavily throughout the day, we call it a Rainy Day. On Rainy Days, our school remains closed so my sister and I have to stay back at home all day long. Last Thursday, it was raining heavily since morning, and our teachers informed our parents that it was a Rainy Day holiday.

My sister and I watched the rain through the window while we were lying on the bed. We love the smell of wet clay when it rains. Both of us like watching the white clouds on any other day but on Rainy Days the cloudy sky is all grey. As we watched it rain, at times we could see a long line of lightning flashing up in the sky. I hid my face in the pillow as I am scared of the loud sound it makes just after the lightning.

The street in front of our building was full of water. All the bi-cycles waded water as they went through the water-logged street. My sister made many paper boats with the newspapers and we made them float in the backyard of our building. As we went downstairs to play with the paper boats, both of us got a little drenched in the rain. We love playing in the rain and hopping in the muddy puddles in our backyard, but our mother scolds us a lot for this.

After playing in the rain, my sister and I came upstairs and took a shower. On Rainy Days our mother cooks delicious ‘Khichdi’ and fries. We love Rainy Days more for this delicious food. As we had our lunch, we could still hear it rain heavily outside. I like to play on other holidays, but I drew a cloudy sky in my artbook and coloured it blue and pink on this Rainy Day. I was also thinking of adding a rainbow to my drawing. While I was busy drawing clouds, my sister came rushing into the room and took me to the terrace. It had stopped raining heavily and there was a little drizzle. My sister pointed out to the sky and drew an arch in the air with her finger. There was a broad smile on her face, as she put her finger down. When I looked up, I could see a big rainbow, just like the one I drew, in the clear blue sky.

My sister and I stayed on the terrace and kept watching the rainbow till it disappeared. There was a cool breeze blowing through our hair as we stood there watching the rainbow. After some time we could not see the rainbow anymore. Some people were flying kites at that time so we started counting the kites.

We love Rainy Days for the paper boats and rainbows but when we looked at the other side of the street, we could see people walking through the water, with their trousers folded high up. The kids who stayed on the roadside had no clothes on and had put on plastic bags to cover their heads. Also, the vegetable vendor at the end of the street had covered his vegetables with a very big plastic cover. There was water everywhere in the streets and not many happy faces could be seen. As it became dark and my sister and I were counting the stars in the sky, our mother called out for us from downstairs. We went back and our Rainy Day ended with lots of hot and spicy onion fries.

Diary Entry Writing: Rainy Day

Writing a diary entry on a rainy day can be a soulful experience that captures the essence of your thoughts, the mood of the environment, and the play of raindrops against the backdrop of your day. Here’s how to encapsulate the rainy day in words:

Table of Contents

Step 1: Set the Scene

Begin by describing the setting. Paint a picture of the rain as it touches your world. You can start with something like:

The steady drumming of rain against my window pane pulled me from the warmth of my bed this morning. It’s a gray, overcast sky with a persistent downpour that seems to promise it will spend the day with us.

Step 2: Reflect on Your Mood

Rain often influences our mood and emotions. Share how the weather makes you feel. Are you melancholic, relaxed, nostalgic, or perhaps invigorated? For example:

There’s a comforting melancholy in the air that makes the day feel like a cozy blanket. It’s as if the raindrops carry away the rush of everyday life, leaving a peaceful quiet in their wake.

Step 3: Include Sensory Details

Use the five senses to bring your entry to life. Describe the sound of the rain, the smell of the wet earth, the touch of damp air, the sight of droplets racing down the window, and even the taste of your warm beverage.

The rain taps a soothing rhythm, a natural lullaby. The fresh scent of petrichor rises from the garden, mingling with the steam from my mug of hot cocoa—a blend of earth and sweetness that defines a rainy day’s taste.

Step 4: Share Your Activities

What did you do? Did the rain change your plans or inspire you to do something different? Write about your activities and how they felt unique because of the rain.

Cancelled plans gave way to an unexpected retreat. I spent hours curled up with a book I’ve been meaning to read, occasionally glancing at the rivulets racing down the glass, feeling the pages’ texture more keenly as the sound of rain provided a perfect backdrop.

Step 5: Contemplate and Introspect

Rainy days can lead to deep thoughts or personal insights. Share your reflections. It could be about your life, dreams, or the simple joy of having a day to yourself.

As the rain washes the world outside, I find it cleansing my thoughts as well. In this quietude, I ponder over the paths I’ve chosen and the future I’m sculpting with each passing day.

Step 6: Close with a Summary

End your entry by summarizing the day and how you feel about the prospect of tomorrow. Will you miss the rain or look forward to the sun?

As night falls, the rain’s rhythm slows to a gentle patter. It’s been a day of inward journey and quiet pleasures. Tomorrow the sun may shine, but for now, I’m content in the embrace of the rain.

Additional Tips:

  • Use Imagery : Enhance your writing with metaphors and similes that relate to the rain and your emotions.
  • Be Authentic : Write honestly about your feelings and experiences. Your diary is a personal space.
  • Experiment with Formats : You can write in prose, pen a poem, or even create a bulleted list of thoughts.
  • Keep it Casual : The tone of a diary is informal. Write as if you are talking to an old friend.
  • Include Quotes or Lyrics : Sometimes a song or a quote captures the mood perfectly. Feel free to include these.

Diary Entry Rainy Day Example #1

Dear Diary,

Today is a rainy day, and I’m feeling a sense of cozy comfort and peace. There’s something about the sound of raindrops tapping against the windowpane, and the soft, grey light that filters through the clouds, that feels soothing and gentle.

As I sit inside, sipping a cup of tea and watching the rain fall outside, I feel a sense of calm and contentment. I’m reminded of the importance of slowing down, of taking a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and of finding moments of stillness and reflection.

Despite the dreary weather, I’m also reminded of the beauty and wonder of the natural world. The rain brings nourishment to the plants and animals around us, and it helps to cleanse and renew the earth. It’s a reminder of the interconnectedness of all things, and of the importance of taking care of our planet.

As the day goes on, I find myself feeling grateful for the opportunity to enjoy this rainy day. I’m grateful for the chance to slow down, to reflect, and to appreciate the simple pleasures of life. I’m reminded of the power of nature to inspire and uplift us, and of the importance of finding moments of peace and connection in the midst of our busy lives.

As I close my diary for the day, I feel content and grateful, and I’m reminded of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us, even on the greyest of days.

Until next time, Diary.

Diary Entry Rainy Day Example #2

Today has been a rainy day, but it’s been a day filled with adventure and fun. Despite the wet weather, I decided to embrace the rain and head out for a walk in the park.

As I walked through the rain-soaked streets, I felt a sense of exhilaration and joy. There’s something about being out in the rain, feeling the water on your skin and hearing the patter of raindrops on the pavement, that feels liberating and invigorating.

As I arrived at the park, I saw that I wasn’t the only one who had decided to brave the elements. There were children splashing in puddles, dogs bounding through the grass, and couples huddled under umbrellas, laughing and chatting.

As I walked through the park, I felt a sense of connection with the world around me. The rain had transformed the landscape, giving everything a fresh, vibrant feel. The colors were brighter, the smells were more intense, and the sounds were more pronounced.

After my walk, I headed home, feeling energized and invigorated by my rainy day adventure. As I settled in with a cup of tea and a good book, I felt grateful for the chance to experience the beauty and wonder of the world, even on a rainy day.

As I close my diary for the day, I’m reminded of the importance of embracing the unexpected, of finding joy and adventure in the midst of our everyday lives, and of connecting with the world around us in new and unexpected ways.

Diary Entry Rainy Day Example #3

Today has been a rainy day, and it’s been a day of reflection and contemplation. As I’ve watched the rain fall outside my window, I’ve been thinking about the cycles of nature, and the way that everything in life is connected.

The rain, as it falls from the sky, brings nourishment to the earth, and helps to sustain the plants and animals that live upon it. It’s a reminder of the way that even the smallest things can have a big impact, and of the importance of taking care of our planet.

As I’ve reflected on the rain, I’ve also been thinking about the way that our emotions and experiences can be cyclical, just like the weather. Sometimes, we experience periods of rain and sadness, but these periods can give way to times of growth, renewal, and happiness.

I’ve been reminded of the importance of embracing all of the seasons of our lives, and of finding meaning and purpose in each one. Whether we’re experiencing the rain of sorrow or the sunshine of joy, there are always lessons to be learned, and opportunities for growth and transformation.

As the rain continues to fall outside, I feel a sense of peace and contentment. I’m reminded of the beauty and wonder of the natural world, and of the way that it can inspire and uplift us, even on the gloomiest of days.

As I close my diary for the day, I feel grateful for the chance to reflect and contemplate, and for the way that the rain has brought a sense of peace and calm to my day.

Last year when I was in 5 th standard, one morning I woke up for school and was getting ready to attend my classes.

It was one of the best days of my life. Rainy days really bring joy and happiness in everyone’s life.

Essay on How to Spend Rainy Day – Essay 4 (500 words)

Rainy day is one such day that is awaited by everyone. People of every age group love and cherish this day. In my family everyone from my grandfather to my younger sister gets overjoyed on such a day. Rains transform the weather from blazing hot and dry to refreshing. Plants, birds and human beings, everyone participates in celebrating rains. Trees turn greener, peacocks begin to dance, farmers turn cheerful and we all relish the rain party on the earth.

How the Weather Impacts Our Mood?

We live in Delhi, a state which is famous for its extreme weather conditions. Heat waves engulf this part of the country for most part of the year. Rains offer the much needed respite from the hot weather. Monsoon is thus one of the most awaited times of the year in Delhi.

Weather has a strange way of impacting our mood. During the hot sunny summer days, people often tend to get angry and aggressive very quickly. The sweat and scorching heat during such a day gives rise to violence and fury. People are often seen in a bad mood and tend to get into arguments and fights easily. On the other hand, a pleasant rainy day uplifts the mood automatically. It is a treat for the senses. Everything around appears joyful. People plan outings with their loved ones on such a day just because of the awesomeness it offers.

An Ideal Rainy Day

A rainy day is loved by everyone. There would hardly be anyone who despises it. Everyone has his own way of rejoicing the rain. While some love walking in the rain, others love to drench and dance while yet others love the view sitting on their window sill.

My ideal rainy day would be sitting by the window and watching rain, catching some droplets of rain and feeling the chilly breeze on my cheeks. I enjoy writing in my diary sitting by the window. It calms my heart and brings new and creative thoughts in my mind. My mother gets me hot cup of coffee and we enjoy our coffee together. I often turn on soft music and relax on an armchair sipping my coffee.

After spending my afternoon and relaxing with my mom, I love to go on a drive with my dad in the evening to explore the city and relish the beauty of nature. We visit our favourite restaurant during the rains and enjoy having crunchy onion and mirchi pakoras with mint chutney. By the time we drive back home, it’s usually dark. I feel so weary and sleepy as I return home. All I do on my return is just change and go to my bed. I really have a sound sleep on a rainy day as the weather is extremely chilly.

So my idea of rainy day is to spend my day with my family and enjoy the beauty of nature. It is so much fun to spend time with family during rains. I love my family and I love rains too.

Essay on Importance of Rainy Day – Essay 5 (600 words)

How rhythmic and soothing the nature is on a rainy day. Dark clouds marching in the sky and showering the droplets of rain, trees rinsing and dancing with charming bliss, dark and gloomy day gleaming our hearts, frogs popping here and there, kids jumping with joy in the muddy pools of water, beautiful peacocks spreading feathers and dancing to compose an art attracting their mates, farmers sway with cheer and new hopes gleaming their eyes – everyone participates to celebrate the joy of rains.

Rainy Day Spent at the Seashore

It is so calming to be out in the nature to enjoy its beauty on a rainy day. I walk up to the seashore to relish a day like this in my white dress. White dress, as I like the contrast it gives, the dark weather and a white dress is a pretty combination and I love it. As soon as I reach there, I remove my flip-flops and throw away my pink umbrella on the sand and run towards the sea.

I walk bare feet at the edge of sea with my chin up to feel the chilling breeze on my cheeks. I grasp the tiny-mini droplets of rain. The glimpse of droplets blending in to the sea waves, soothe my eyes. The refreshing aroma of rain calms my heart. The melodies of droplets make me sway along with the beat. I fantasize like I am the mermaid at the edge of sea. Me and my fantasies…! I stand still drenched in water shivering and clutching myself smiling at the lure of nature.

Rainy Day at Home

On the weekends when it is raining I just love to spend my day inside my home. Something about rainy days makes me feel so lazy and so cozy. I just love to snuggle into my blanket reading a love story. My mom loves to make delicious chocolate cookies for me on rainy days. The aroma of hot cookies in the chilled weather, spells some kind of magic on me. I really feel very hungry during these days and I keep on munching all day long. I prefer having my hot chocolate cookies dipped in milk, I just love it. I later spend my whole day lying on sofa in my pajamas and watching my favorite movies.

Rainy Day Serves an Inspiration for Writers and Poets

We all read poems, stories and books.

Thus, everyone has his/ her own ideal way of enjoying a rainy day however some might even just hate rainy days.

Long Essay on Rainy Day – Essay 6 (800 Words)

Advantages of a Rainy Day

There are several advantages of a rainy day.

Disadvantages of Rainy Day

Despite having several advantages, a rainy day also has certain amount of disadvantages associated with it.

Things to Do On a Rainy Day

If you have decided to postpone your prior engagements and to enjoy the rain, then there are actually plenty of things you can do to spend your own rainy day.

Rainy Day is like a blessing for the parched earth and its thirsty inhabitants.

A Rainy Day in Rainy Season

How threading is nature on a rainy day. Yet she is lovely to look at. It is thrilling to move about on a day like this.

The day is dark and the sky is overcast with cloud. Rain comes down in torrents. Small muddy pools of water are here and there and everywhere. Trees bath themselves. Drops of water bang mother branches of the tree and drip on the earth below. A wander caught unaware is found taking shelter under the wide spreading branches of tall trees. No animal stress out. The whole region in drenched with rain.

Farmers with their bullocks, plough the fields. All are in ankle deep mud. It is steadily raining. They give up plugging. Mother earth is ready for fresh yield.

I walk up to the river bank on a day like this. Rain drops merge themselves into waves. Muddy waves throws their whole might against the bank. They oppose the movements of the boats. A blinding wind adds to the misery of the boatman. And the blinding rain obscures everything beyond.

I stand drenched under a tree. A few hours pass and streams came rushing down the sloppy places. Very soon they find level ground on and on the water flows sweeping away dirt and filth.

The incessant under a tree. Trees bath themselves. Drops of water bang mother branches of the tree and drip on the earth below. A wander caught unaware is found taking shelter under the wide spreading branches of tall trees. No animal stress out. The whole region in drenched with rain.

The rain stops and the clouds sail across the sky. The sun too shows it face but rather timidly. It seems frightened by the change that has came over nature. The nun hides again. The rainbow makes its appearance. Its beautiful colors lend a charm to the dull back ground of the sky. I see a flash of lighting and hear a distant rumbling and it rain.

The evening draws near. The rain pattes against the windows. Everyone is confined to his room. It rains hard and the wind hisses. The fury of nature goes on for hours.

A Rainy Day

In summer the heat in intense. Hot winds blow. A dark cloud or a shower of rain is always welcome. If the rain does not fall people pray for it. They do Yoga exercise. It is difficult to go out in burning  heat.

In summer a rainy day is a day of enjoyment. When dark clouds cover the sky, we begin to dance with joy. When breeze blows and rain falls every  heart is filled with delight. People go  out to the canal or the river to hold picnic. Some people go out to enjoy sight of Nature. Young girls gather under some big tree to enjoy swing. They enjoy going up and down on the swing. They sing sweet songs. These songs give us great pleasure. Thus they make merry. Little children come out with lion clothes. They bathe in the rain water. Some of the m roll in dirty rain water.  They float paper boats in the running water. How they shout when their boas sink or are carried away by the current of water !

Everything in nature has fresh look after rain. The grass which looked withered in summer’s heat a day before, rises it head proudly. It moves to and fro when the wind blows. The cuckoo sings its sweet songs from mango tree. It hails the rain. How sweet are its songs!

There are pools of water here and there. Houses and streets wash off their dirt. Trees and plants are bathed in rain water. They look gay and green Animals and   birds also enjoy the rain. The frogs make a very pleasant noise after the rain. They begin to croak.

After rain roads, lanes and streets are covered with mud. It causes much trouble. We cannot walk without spoiling our clothes. Everybody feels uncomfortable for some time. Boys have to stop out- door games. People become bored and inactive. At some places railway track is damaged when it rains heavily. Mud huts begin to leak. Some are damaged under heavy rains. Boys and girls get completely wet. Sometimes they fall ill. They fall a prey to skin diseases.

On the whole a rainy day in the summer is generally full of joy. It brings comfort to us. It is fully enjoyable if the sun does not appear. But if the clouds break up the sun begins to shine more brightly. Then our joy disappears. The wind fails. Oh ! there is close again. The heat becomes more intense. How miserable we feel! The roads get muddy. Here and there the careless passers- by slip down. How people make fun of them! They spoil their clothes. But all the same rain is a must in a country like India.

A Rainy Day Makes Me Feel Happy

My brother, sister and I love rainy days. We enjoy playing in the rain very much. There is a very shallow stream near our house. Each time it rains, we go there to sail our paper boats and watch them being swept away. The rain makes the water in the stream deeper and it is exciting to watch the swift currents flow over the stones, carrying away leaves, grass from our garden. We watch intently as our paper boats are tossed about in the water. They down the stream and we often wonder where then sail swifdy they finally end up.

During the rain, we also love to sit and watch the puddles of water in our garden. As pools of water are formed, our ducks start splashing about in them, quacking noisily. Sometimes, we run out in the rain, throw stones into the puddles of water and watch the ripples of water growing bigger and bigger. The water looks like rings of silver as the shining raindrops fall onto its surface. I think the rain is better than the burning heat of the sun. Once in a while, we enjoy ourselves playing ball games in the rain. It is fun, provided we do not catch a cold or a chill. I like playing in the rain when there is no thunder or lightning.

Outline: The shortage of water in June — the sky overcast — street scenes —children were happy.

The month of June came to an end without a drop of rain. There was an acute shortage of water. Crowds of people formed queues near public taps anxiously waiting to fill their pots with precious water!

It was a hopeful sign when one day we saw the gathering clouds becoming darker and darker. Suddenly there was a gust accompanied by rain. The rain pelted down so vigorously that soon the drains were full and overflowing. The low-lying areas were flooded, confining several families in their homes.

In the streets one witnessed another sight. Pedestrians ran helter-skelter for safety and shelter. Those who anticipated rain were well armed with umbrellas and waterproof coats. As the rain poured, traffic slowed down and at certain places it almost came to a standstill. Life in the city was disorganized, several trains were held up as the track lay under water, and almost all public vehicles ceased plying. In these conditions the plight of the people going to offices, students to schools and colleges, and businessmen to their working places, was pitiable. It was very difficult for them to reach their destinations.

In spite of the gloom cast by the grey sky, there were some scenes of merriment. School-going children hailed the day with shouts of joy. It turned out to be a holiday, and scores of children were seen romping and wading knee-deep in puddles of water, playing at ducks and drakes, or splashing water at one another. There were some amusing ‘scenes which sent the bystanders into roars of laughter. Some umbrellas were blown off, while others had their covering turned inside out. Someone sprawled on the slippery ground or tumbled in the miry pool.

When the rain ceased after an incessant downpour of two or three days, the air was clean and the sky looked clear. temperature dropped, relieving the’ city of the sweltering heat which caused so much discomfort to the people.

Difficult Words: Gust – sudden rush of wind. pedestrian – one journeying on foot. helter-skelter – in a hurry, in disorder. anticipated-expected. ducks & drakes – a game in which one makes the surface of water.

The monsoons in India are heralded with great joy because they provide respite to a tropical country from the intense heat it is cloaked in the whole year around. The ideal rainy day of course, is, when it rains steadily for hours on end. Rainy days might appear gloomy and depressing to many, but to those living in the tropics the rains are a welcome change. All of a sudden the earth is transformed from this dry, dusty, parched piece of land in to a gorgeous, green beauty that is full of life and vigor. The sky may be overcast, but the flowers are in full bloom. All around, it is like the earth is coming alive, celebrating life itself. The smell of rain when it hits the hot earth is what memories are made of in the subcontinent.

A rainy day is a lot of fun for kids. As they step out of their homes, umbrellas in hand and make their way down to school, the roads are transformed in to a rainbow of colors. Elbowing each other with their umbrellas, stealinga few raindrops here and there, jumping in puddles; a rainy day is a time to rejoice for the young. Nothing can be more fun than playing football in the rain. Slipping, falling, and sliding with the occasional goal thrown in while the rain pours on to you incessantly is possible only on a rainy day and it is the stuff that youth fun is made up of. As for the adults, a rainy day when one has to go to work can be unwelcome. Circling the puddles, while hanging on to an umbrella and a briefcase, all the while keeping an eye on the road to make sure that a passing vehicle does not splash you with muck can be both grueling and cumbersome. It could take away the magic from a rainy day but of course nothing that a steaming cup of tea, a mug of coffee, and a plate of hot snacks (bhajjis) wouldn’t remedy. The pitter patter of raindrops makes for soothing music to the soul and many music albums have been inspired by it.

In Indian music, a raga is a melody which is based on a series of notes. Raga Megha and Raga Malhar are associated with rainy season and when they are sung on a rainy day they create magic. Such is the impact of rains on our senses that no Bollywood movie is complete without at least one scene of the hero and heroine frolicking in the rain.

On a serious note, rain means everything to farmers. In an agricultural country like India rains can affect the economy. No rain could mean water shortage and a famine too. While rain is good for the crops and they thrive on it, several rainy days could mean excess rain to the extent that the crops could be destroyed. A rainy day in the monsoon season is welcome, but a rainy day in warm weather could mean destruction of fruits like the mango. It could spell the ruin of certain crops. The true delight of a rainy day is when one sees a rainbow. Rainbows cause a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the sun shines on to droplets of moisture. This multicolored arc, which has seven colors in all, is a pleasure for the eyes to behold for both the young and old. All in all a rainy day is a day that fills you with joy and calm and soothes your soul even if it might sometimes be inconvenient.

Short Essay on a Day of Heavy Rain in 100 Words

Monsoon is my favourite season. Monsoon brings rain and provides us with much-needed relief from the scorching heat of summer. I especially love the days when it rains heavily. On such days, my parents don’t allow me to go to school and they take leave from their workplace. I get to enjoy the whole day with my parents and siblings.

The streets become waterlogged and all the kids in the neighbourhood start making paper boats. We put colourful paper boats in the water and enjoy watching them float. On days of heavy rain, my mother always makes delicious onion fritters. My father especially loves eating them with a hot cup of tea. After lunch, all of us play games like snake and ladder, carrom board, dumb charades, etc. I enjoy rainy days.

Short Essay on a Day of Heavy Rain in 200 Words

Monsoon is one of my favourite seasons. The sound of the raindrops falling on parched earth and the earthy fragrance that is radiated fills my heart with excitement and happiness. On days when it rains rather heavily, my parents don’t allow me and my brother to go to school.

My father takes leave from his office as well and I get to enjoy the day together with my whole family. As the streets become waterlogged, the kids in my neighbourhood rush to make paper boats. My brother is exceptionally good at making those. We put our colourful paper boats in the water and enjoy watching them float.

On days of heavy rain, my mother always makes onion fritters. My father says that there is nothing better than having freshly made onion fritters with hot tea on rainy days. My brother and I, however, enjoy drinking hot chocolate more. After having lunch together, we sit down to play fun games like snake and ladder, carrom board and dumb charades. In the evening when it gets colder and the electricity is cut due to the incessant rain, my parents tuck me and my brother in bed and tell us stories about their childhood days.

Short Essay on a Day of Heavy Rain in 400 Words

Monsoon is one of my favourite seasons. It is that time of the year when the dark rain clouds fill the sky after months of scorching heat and signs of new life begin to appear all around us. It is that time of the year when the sound of raindrops falling on parched earth and the earthy fragrance that is radiated fills everyone’s heart and soul with renewed hope and excitement. Everyone loves the gentle breezes and the mild showers that the monsoon brings but not many enjoy the days when it rains heavily. I, however, love heavy rains.

When it rains heavily, my parents don’t allow me and my brother to go to school. My father takes leave from his office as well, and we get to spend the entire day together. As the streets become waterlogged, the kids in my neighbourhood rush to make paper boats. My brother is exceptionally good at making those. We put our colourful paper boats in the water and enjoy watching them float. Sometimes we even compete to see whose boats will cover a longer distance.

On such days, my mother always makes onion fritters. My father says that there is nothing better than having freshly made onion fritters with hot tea on rainy days. My brother and I, however, enjoy drinking hot chocolate more. After having a hearty lunch together, we sit down to play fun games like snake and ladder, carrom board and dumb charades. In the evening, if the is a power outage, my parents make us go to bed early. My brother and I tell each other ghost stories and enjoy scaring each other.

A couple of years ago, a cyclone had hit our state and the rain didn’t stop for days. During that time, my brother fell sick and got a high fever. I saw my father going out to get medicines in waist-deep water. Most of the clinics were closed and no doctors were available. It was a scary time for us. I wished for the rain to stop.

When I looked outside from our balcony, there was not a single person on the streets. Everything was submerged in water. The next day, the rain stopped and in a few days, my brother got well too. Although it was a scary experience, my brother and I still love the rainy season and wait for days when it rains heavily so that we can skip school and enjoy the day at home.

How my (many) wedding superstitions saved my marriage

Following every good-luck rule was just one way of managing my fears around making it to forever.

I was raised in a family of wildly superstitious Italians. Black cats and broken mirrors were our warm-up act. My relatives would not exit from a different door of the house than they entered, pass a baby over literally any surface, come within a hundred yards of an owl, or buy, rent or honestly even visit any property in any way associated with the number thirteen. But the rules that scared me most as a child were the superstitions about marriage. Omens about the groom seeing the wedding gown (or God forbid the bride!). Predictions about what happens if it rains on the day (nothing good in my family’s personal system of belief — yes, I know that’s opposite what the rest of the world believes). Grave guidelines for that cute old-new-borrowed-blue rhyme (my aunt bought hundreds of sixpence in the ’80s so not one family shoe would be in jeopardy). And the grandmother of them all: Never accept a vintage engagement ring. To enter marriage wearing the karma from someone else’s relationship?! Mamma mia !

Somewhere around high school I became the gray sheep of my family in many categories (full black sheep was a step too far from the family lasagna). One among them was my unwillingness to stay in line with that long list of superstitions. I started brazenly walking through front doors then dancing out the back, and I once opened an umbrella indoors — on Christmas. Naturally I thought I would also be the first rebel bride. What modern, free-thinking woman would let ancient practices rule her love life?

Cut to me seconds after my boyfriend of three years finally asked, “Anything I should know about your taste in rings?”

I did not breathe before yelling, “It has to be brand-new!”

book

Thankfully he got the (very clear) memo, but my 180 on how to guarantee a “happily ever after” only worsened in the months leading up to my wedding. I downloaded six different weather apps, hid my gown in my parents’ basement and had three backups for each old/new/borrowed/blue item (so a dozen individual items). Somewhere around considering an entire rain date wedding, I started to wonder if there was something deeper at play. Why was I suddenly so committed to following every single rule? To be clear, I think it’s lovely to honor family traditions on your big day, but for me this ran much deeper than decorating with the same lucky peonies my ancestors chose to bring prosperity.

It hit me when I tossed a straw hat onto my bed, breaking a non-wedding rule without a second thought: This wasn’t about my relationship with superstition, it was about my relationship with marriage . Following every good-luck rule was just one way of managing my fears around making it to forever .

I started to see each superstition as this sort of emotional litmus test for my feelings about the future — my brain’s way of dealing with the huge life decision I was making. The real question wasn’t, “Will a rainy day, missed item or heirloom ring mean a bad marriage?” It was, “Can anything actually guarantee that I won’t end up divorced?” Not, “What if the sixpence falls off my shoe?” but “What if I fall out of love with this man?” I decided to focus my attention on trying to answer those questions before I walked down the aisle (instead of looking for a fourth something blue). What was I afraid might happen to my marriage, and why?

Once I let my fears do some talking, I realized some anxieties were based on things still unsaid in my relationship . My fiancé and I had talked about many versions of our future but never had a firm conversation about parenthood. I also realized I needed to hear all his truest feelings about being tied to a writer who might never have truly stable income. And how exactly would he react if I said, “Sorry, no cats … ever . ”? Quickly the idea of not having these very foundational talks became scarier than sitting down to hash it all out. I felt a hidden-wedding-gown-sized weight off my shoulders after we finally did. I was also more convinced than ever that I’d picked the right partner.

And yet there was still no way in hell you could have convinced me to let him see my wedding dress before the day.

Jessie Rosen sitting with her husband after wedding ceremony

The more air time I gave my worry the more I realized that underneath it all was a deep distrust in the entire concept of marriage . The couples in my immediate family are together, but I’m a child of the ’90s. Growing up, more than half my friends split their time between Mom’s house and Dad’s house. But I was also able to see how much I craved certainty and control over my life, and how much angst I felt around the idea of the opposite. I started seeing a therapist for help working through those feelings, which were spilling over into much more than my wedding planning. At first I felt so much shame around all my uncertainty. A bride with cold feet? Mamma mia! But the closer I got to my wedding date the more pride I felt in my decision to battle the fears versus ignore them, and the more comfort I felt with all the new tools I was developing to know whether or not forever was for me.

Any relationship is a leap of faith. Marriage takes that hope in lasting love and makes it legally binding. The truth is you can follow every single rule in the Italian superstition book (yes, there absolutely is one in print), and still not know for certain whether you’ll make it to “‘til death do us part.” To me that’s what makes the decision to enter into a lifelong commitment so incredibly romantic. You’re saying, “I know how big this is, and I’m doing it anyway.” Or as I came to decide, that’s why I’m doing it. Marriage is the biggest way that I have to say that I believe we should be together for life.

In the end, it rained on our wedding day, and despite all the options my “something borrowed” was the same thing as my “something blue” which was — irony of all ironies — an heirloom butterfly brooch from my Italian grandmother. But on May 10, my husband and I celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary, and I firmly believe we’ve made it this far because of those wedding superstitions I became obsessed with over a decade ago. Walking through that process showed me that my sudden rule-following was a sign that it was time for me to examine my motivation. And I say bravo to any bride that faces those fears head-on before saying “I do.” To get married without exploring your deepest feelings about the decision?! Mamma mia !

Hawaii Governor May Nix Plan To Put More Money Into The State Rainy Day Fund

Green says the state cannot afford to put another $300 million into the budget reserve fund, which already has about $1.5 billion.

Gov. Josh Green said Tuesday he is strongly inclined to veto a bill that would pump hundreds of millions of extra dollars into the state’s rainy day budget reserve fund and the Employees Retirement System.

During an interview on Hawaii News Now’s “Spotlight Now ” program, Green said he does not expect to veto many bills this year because he worked closely with lawmakers during the session that ended May 3.

But lawmakers should expect at least one measure will probably be rejected.

That is House Bill 40 , which would deposit $300 million into the emergency and budget reserve fund, better known as the “rainy day” fund. That fund now has a balance of about $1.5 billion, the largest amount its ever held.

The same bill would direct another $135 million to the Employees Retirement System next fiscal year to help fund pensions for state workers. That money would be in addition to the routine annual payments the state makes to fund the retirement system.

Gov. Josh Green arrives to a standing ovation before delivering the state of the state address Monday, Jan. 22, 2024, in Honolulu. Gov. Green highlighted affordable housing, Maui recovery, homelessness, health care, education among other items he’ll present to the legislature this session. (Kevin Fujii/Civil Beat/2024)

“I don’t like that bill,” Green said. “That’s $435 million. I’d rather see us have a more conservative, secure economy and financial plan.

“I intend, most likely — most likely — to veto that and put that money to balance our budget,” he added.

Green said the budget he proposed before session would have left the state with a cash surplus of $600 million at the end of next fiscal year, but during the session the Legislature approved bills that would spend an extra $835 million beyond what Green wanted.

The governor said he was pleased with much of the work lawmakers did, including funding for the Maui wildfire recovery effort and passing a huge state income tax break that is expected to reduce state tax collections by $5 billion over the next six years.

But Green said if he signed every bill today that lawmakers passed apart from the state budget, “we would be actually $200 million in the red, which can’t happen.” The Hawaii Constitution requires a balanced budget.

Green also said it is a “coin toss” as to whether he will veto Senate Bill 1511 , which would limit the authority of the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii. RCUH now handles research funding for the UH along with a variety of other activities.

Green said that bill “could be disruptive, so I have to figure that one out.”

Photo Essay: My Spring 2024 Semester at CDS

how to enjoy a rainy day essay

Hi there! My name is Isabella Boncser, and I'm currently a sophomore in the six-year Accelerated BS/DPT program in Boston University's Sargent College (2026/2028). In addition to my academic pursuits, I have a passion for photography, and am currently the CDS student event photographer. I love capturing student life within CDS, whether that be taking pictures of students studying in the building on a rainy day, attending 24-hour civic tech hackathon on the 17th floor, or a faculty and staff appreciation event. Over this past semester, I had the honor of working with the CDS communications team, led by Maureen McCarthy , director, and Alessandra Augusto , events & communications manager.

I was asked to highlight some of my best and brightest work from the semester. The following images were captured this spring, and are some of my favorite images. They showcase the versatility of student life within CDS and BU Spark !

BU Spark! hosted a Tech For Change Civic Tech Hackathon , where students spent 24 hours at BU to developed a new project with teamwork and technical skills at the forefront. I had the opportunity to meet students from 19 different schools, all of whom spent (literally) day and night on the 17th floor of the Center for Computing & Data Sciences working together and using their hacking skills to create a difference in the world. Pictured here are two students celebrating after discussing their individual projects and asking for some advice regarding their presentations.

The Center for Computing & Data Sciences truly has a place for everyone at BU. The main level has become the campus living room, where students can meet to chat over coffee, or catch up on emails on the staircase. On a rainy day, students can find a " cozy corner " and focus on their work in a relaxing environment. This is a glimpse of the "sit steps" - the large staircase with over two dozen conversation spaces that has become popular for students to relax and get some work done between classes.

You may have heard people refer to the Center for Computing & Data Sciences as the "Jenga Building" because of its Jenga-like architecture. The building, which is home to the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, the Departments of Mathematics & Statistics and Computer Sciences, and the renowned Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computation Science & Engineering, embraces its beautiful yet fun architecture while focusing on community! Next time you are craving a fun study break, join the CDS Events Team for a night of Jenga and try some delicious popcorn!

Driving down Commonwealth Avenue, the building stands out amongst its peers and shines bright along the Boston city skyline. Illuminating the streets during dusk, the building is one of my favorites the photograph. The 17th floor is home to many events hosted by CDS faculty and staff, as well as the general BU community.

Computational Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences ( CHASS ) hosted a variety of tutorials ranging from "An Analysis on Emerson's Work" to large language model discussions throughout the Spring 2024 semester. These sessions are a great way to learn about the data science industry and how your skills will be used in the real world. Check out the CHASS video tutorial library on YouTube .

I am heading to Dublin, Ireland to live and study abroad for the Fall 2024 semester! I am so thankful to Maureen McCarthy who gave me the opportunity to work with and celebrate the CDS community. I would also like to shoutout Sebastian Bak (QST'25) who recommended the position to me, and spoke so highly of the CDS community!

High Interest Rates Are Hitting Poorer Americans the Hardest

The economy as a whole has proved resilient amid the highest rates in decades. But beneath the surface, many low- and moderate-income families are struggling.

  • Share full article

Chris Nunn, in glasses, a black T-shirt and jeans, sits outside the door of a home.

By Ben Casselman and Jeanna Smialek

High interest rates haven’t crashed the financial system, set off a wave of bankruptcies or caused the recession that many economists feared.

But for millions of low- and moderate-income families, high rates are taking a toll.

More Americans are falling behind on payments on credit card and auto loans, even as many are taking on more debt than ever before. Monthly interest expenses have soared since the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates two years ago. For families already strained by high prices, dwindling savings and slowing wage growth, increased borrowing costs are pushing them closer to the financial edge.

“It’s crazy,” said Ora Dorsey, a 43-year-old Army veteran in Clarksville, Tenn. “It does make it hard to get out of debt. It seems like you’re only paying the interest.”

Ms. Dorsey has been working for years to chip away at the debts she accrued when a series of health issues left her temporarily out of work. Now she is juggling three jobs to try to pay off thousands of dollars in credit card balances and other debts. She is making progress, but high rates aren’t helping.

“How am I supposed to retire?” she asked. “I’m not able to save, have that rainy-day fund, because I’m trying to take down the debt that I have.”

Ms. Dorsey isn’t likely to get relief soon. Fed officials have indicated that they expect to keep interest rates at their current level, the highest in decades, for months. And while policymakers still say they are likely to cut rates eventually, assuming inflation slows down as expected, they could consider raising them further if prices begin rising faster again. The latest evidence will come on Wednesday when the Labor Department releases data showing whether inflation cooled in April, or remained uncomfortably hot for a fourth straight month.

The overall economy has proved unexpectedly resilient to high interest rates. Consumers have continued spending on travel, restaurant meals and entertainment thanks to rising wages and debt levels that, despite their recent increase, remain manageable as a share of income for most people.

But aggregate figures obscure an underlying divide that is likely to widen the longer interest rates remain high. Affluent households, and even many in the middle class, have largely been insulated from the effects of the Fed’s policies. Many took out long-term mortgages when rates were at rock bottom in 2020 or earlier — if they don’t own their homes outright — and most have little if any variable-rate debt. And they are benefiting from higher returns on their savings.

For poorer families, it is different. They are likelier to carry a balance on credit cards, meaning they’re more likely to feel high rates. According to Fed data, about 56 percent of people earning less than $25,000 carried a credit card balance in 2022, compared with 38 percent of those earning more than $100,000. Black Americans, like Ms. Dorsey, and Latinos are also more likely to carry balances.

Recent economic research suggests that high borrowing costs may be one reason for Americans’ dim view of the state of the economy. In surveys, lower-income households remain particularly dour about their financial well-being.

Barbara L. Martinez, a financial counselor in Chicago who works at Heartland Alliance, a nonprofit group, said that for many of her low-income clients, debt is inescapable, especially since food prices and rents have soared. They don’t have savings to cover unexpected expenses like car repairs or illness. And while high borrowing costs aren’t necessarily causing their financial difficulties, they make dealing with debt much harder.

“You’re trying to get out of the ocean, but the waves keep pushing you back,” she said. “No matter how much you swim, you get tired.”

High interest rates are always tougher on borrowers than on savers. But most of the time, they also push down the value of stocks, houses and other assets. That means rate increases usually affect households across the income spectrum, albeit in different ways.

That isn’t how things have played out recently. Stock prices fell when the Fed began raising rates, but have rebounded and are near a record. Home prices have continued rising in most of the country.

The result is a growing divide. Fed data suggests that wealth for the upper half dipped after the Fed’s initial rate increase in 2022, but is again setting records. For the bottom half, however, wealth remains below its level before the Fed began raising rates, after subtracting credit card and mortgage debt and other liabilities.

“Higher-income households feel very flush,” said Brian Rose, senior economist at UBS. “They’ve seen such a huge run-up in the value of their house and the value of their portfolios that they feel like they can keep spending.”

Airlines, hotels and other industries that cater largely to higher-income consumers have generally reported strong profits of late. But mass-market brands like McDonald’s and KFC have reported slower sales , with many citing weakness among low-income consumers as part of the reason.

The divergence puts Fed officials in an uncomfortable position: Free spending by wealthy households means high interest rates have done little to curb consumer demand. But with few other inflation-fighting tools, policymakers have little choice but to keep interest rates high — even if those policies hurt families that are already struggling.

Virginia Diaz thought she was on track for a secure retirement when she moved to Florida from New York nearly 20 years ago. But she drew down her savings and built up credit card debt helping family members, including a niece with health issues. Now high prices and high interest rates are putting her retirement in jeopardy.

“Every time I make a payment to my credit card, most of the money is going to pay interest, and that just snowballs,” she said. “I’m at the end of my rope.”

Ms. Diaz, 74, said she has cut her spending to the bone — “If I want to buy a candle, I have to think about it,” she said — and the rest of her family is also struggling. Her nephew, 35, works full time in the insurance industry, but lives in an apartment in her garage because he can’t afford to buy a house, or even a car. A friend of her niece’s also lives with her, chipping in to pay bills.

Ms. Diaz practically begged Fed officials to cut interest rates.

“I know they mean well, but it’s not working,” she said. “Lower it, for God’s sake, so people can live. Give us half a chance to give us a decent level of living.”

Many liberal economists agree, arguing that inflation has fallen enough that the Fed should start cutting rates before it causes more severe economic damage.

“High interest rates really forced cracks in that recovery, and it’s folks who are on the margins of our economy who are hit first and hit hardest,” said Rakeen Mabud, chief economist at the Groundwork Collaborative, a progressive group. “They really serve as a bellwether for what could happen to the rest of our economy.”

But Fed officials argue it is essential to bring inflation under control, in part because it, too, has a bigger impact on the poor, who have little room in their budgets to accommodate higher prices.

“If you’re a person who’s living paycheck to paycheck, and suddenly all the things you buy, the fundamentals of life, go up in price, you are in trouble right away,” Jerome H. Powell, the Fed chair, said at a news conference this month. “And so, with those people in mind in particular, what we’re doing is we’re using our tools to bring down inflation.”

And while high interest rates have affected many families, they have not so far caused the widespread job losses that many progressive critics predicted and that have historically been hardest on lower-wage workers. The unemployment rate remains low, including for Black and Hispanic workers, who are often more prone to lose their jobs when the economy weakens. And wage growth over the past several years has been strongest for lower-paid workers.

For most people, “the big issue is whether you’re holding onto your job,” said C. Eugene Steuerle, a fellow at the Urban Institute who has studied how monetary policy affects inequality.

But high rates today could make it harder for many families to build wealth in the longer run by making homeownership more difficult. They could also curb the construction of apartments and houses, which over time could further push up rents.

The result: a generation of young adults who fear they can neither afford to buy nor rent.

Chris Nunn, 31, has accumulated more than $6,000 in credit card debt, most of it from moving expenses tied to rent increases. His rent in Louisville, Ky., keeps rising, and he sees little hope of paying off the debt with what he makes driving for DoorDash while completing a college degree.

“We don’t have the credit to be able to buy a house, and we have a bunch of debt, either student loans or credit card debt,” he said. “So we’re trapped.”

Ben Casselman writes about economics with a particular focus on stories involving data. He has covered the economy for nearly 20 years, and his recent work has focused on how trends in labor, politics, technology and demographics have shaped the way we live and work. More about Ben Casselman
