The architecture of public open urban spaces; how to define a syntax in the contemporary urban environment

The way in which public spaces have been interpreted throughout history is a way of cognitive process that has much to do with the human phenomenology of a place and the design paradigms through architectural phases. Although modern design is contemporized in a broad existentialism of varying styles, the modes of constructing are intuitively based on modalities of civic art that are cognitively present in the minds of every architect with some artistic, historical and cultural awareness of civic art public open urban spaces, forming the basis of environmental compositions of aesthetic beauty, in the sense of habitable experience. This thesis is a demonstration of the problem of defining civic art in relation to public open urban spaces of contemporary times, in relation to those of modernism, along with the presentation of syntactic demonstrations of contemporary solutions, in order to offer tools and actions for the architectural qualitative habitation of the public urban environment.

A city’s public space has undergone significant changes during the twentieth century. Those changes have affected both form and social function. Public space has suffered crises and revivals, but despite all its changes, it currently still plays a significant role for citizens. Mediterranean culture remains a valid tradition of public consciousness, which is evident in the urban space itself. The balance between aesthetic dimension ?material form? and social dimension ?use and meaning? is desirable in order to create an awareness of urban heritage and citizenship feeling. This article analyzes the main recent crises both aesthetic and social in public space in the western city. From this dual analysis, it discusses the main findings about perception of urban public space in current Mediterranean culture. In conclusion, the aesthetic and social dimensions of public space are not independent but interdependent by the confluence of several factors.

rphology studies cannot consider urban form without taking into account buildings and open spaces. These two elements are closely connected to physical support and pre-existing environmental dynamics. Therefore we see no sense in breaking them in any studies related to the urban form. This article begins to look at the city and its forms under a rarely used way. The open space becomes the protagonist of the analysis. This approach considers both publicly and privately owned spaces. It evaluate the role of different types of retreats that shape backyards, enclosed yards, parking lots, parks and plazas, etc.. and through which passes part of everyday city life. Despite the natural connection links with others societies in the world like: similar neighborhoods and architectural forms, global urban habits, Brazilian cities hold a peculiar form coming from the specific process of parceling land, urban legislation, cultural habits and formal and informal actions that resulted as the contemporaneous Brazilian urban landscape. After five years of study, carried out by a national network of researchers, coordinated by LAB-QUAPA[1] – at the São Paulo University, it was possible to build a comprehensive overview of the characteristics, opportunities and constraints of the Brazilian cities open space systems. The presentation discusses the relationship between the open space systems and the urban form, checking the points in common: their process of constitution, the existing social and environmental conflicts, and their morphological structure and appropriation types of open spaces.

The rapid development of the big European cities in the XXth century and the change of the traditional city into a metropolis ga ve birth not only to an extraordinary dynamic artistic culture but also to a culture of i nterpreting, dedicated to the study and explanation of these urban phenomena and their soci al effects. The aim of this paper is to build a bridge between various practices of contemp orary art as they can be found in public art (to be more specific: site-specific art, as we ill see) and a series of disciplines dealing with the studying of urban space: urban sociology, human geography and the anthropology of the everyday, all inspired by critical theories of culture and society. From this point on, we will be able to meditate upon public art’s role in the urban public space.

Public art hereby is utilized as a kind of artistic-architectural laboratory for creating the urban anew with alternative, or rather subversive, forms of ephemeral architecture, temporary interventions, and as well as urgencies of our time beyond "decorative cosmetics" might then open and suggest a new path to greater public engagement and civic co-creation, for example by artistically enhancing the functions and roles of public space in cities or by establishing social interaction and active participation, shared (emotional) experiences, and mutual encounters. The creative reinterpretation and aesthetic transformation of public space by artistic imagination might facilitate the sustainable regeneration of the urban in the end, and even more, discuss the idea of ownership of urban space anew. However, it is not considered a substitute for politics though.

Designing directive urban design is essential that guides once path of exploration and revelation of different spaces of art and architecture. Thus it emphasizes upon the necessity of urban axis that is abstract in nature, yet carves a variety of sensory experiences along its path thereby providing a variety and an opportunity of being a part of these spaces. To understand this, the essay highlights the importance of the public realm and the practice of good urban design through literature and case studies and later applying the studied knowledge onto the chosen site to test the practical workability within the chosen context.

The paper evaluates the vision of the proposal for the city of Basel in Switzerland and delves into the concept of 'shared space' the designers explored in this project. Focusing on the reinvention of the public spaces in the historical and geographical settings of Basel, it will further analyze the vision in the context of urbanism theories and practices prevalent at that time. The paper offers an appraisal of unique historical, geographical and morphological background of the site and the role it plays in shaping vibrant public spaces that facilitates an integrated cityscape. The first part of the paper brings to light the unique characteristics of this vision for Basel city centre. Secondly, Basel city life is analyzed to realize the need the designers felt for this project. The third section is an attempt to understand the fundamental aspects of this proposal. In doing so, the paper attempts to understand the way designers approached this vision. Finally the paper concludes with a reflection on how the proposal relates to the prevailing theories of urbanism and how it challenges certain preconceived notions.

This thesis challenges the way we design and inhabit urban public space. This architectural thesis project envisions a new public space. A framework for expression: a place where people physically create the spaces around them through architectural manipulation and expression of ideas, art and performance. The framework is inspired by translating the principles of garment design into architectural strategies: joinery, materiality, structure, response, and adjustability. As the architecture changes, so do the programs and ways of expressing. The site of this exploration is on the coast of Maine, in the city of Portland; acting as a gateway into the city from the ocean, as well as a connector, bridging the Downtown and East End districts. The concept is explored by creating architecture for an urban public space through architectural strategies that respond to the people, site, and city that promotes expression, gathering, and becomes a physical connection to the city. By implementing a framework for expression in a urban public setting, people will be able to communicate through architecture by changing the physical spaces that surround them. Individual expression spurs the connection of people. The connection of people spurs the connection of a city. And, ultimately a city with meaningful connections, both physical and otherwise, will develop a more socially engaged society.

Architecture graduate student's thesis on urban public spaces receives award.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Aysan Jafarzadeh, who graduated from Penn State on May 7 with her master of architecture degree from the College of Arts and Architecture's Stuckeman School , was named the 2023 winner of the Department of Architecture 's Jawaid Haider Award for Design Excellence in Graduate Studies for her thesis that explores the concept of art in urban public spaces as a means to promote creativity, individuality, inclusivity and freedom among city residents and visitors.

Titled “Boston's Botanic Bay: A Visionary Towards a Creative Paradigm of Public Spaces,” Jafarzadeh's thesis is a visionary project for the Public Garden that “redefines the concept of public spaces, blending the beauty of nature with innovative design elements that challenge traditional boundaries.”

The site of her project was originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the famous landscape architect who is revered for co-designing many well-known urban parks, including Central Park in New York, but was never executed. Jafarzadeh drew from Olmsted's ideas while introducing new concepts and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in public space design.

“One of the key principles of the project is the freedom of movement and activity,” said Jafarzadeh. “The design includes meandering paths, open lawns and interactive play areas that encourage people to explore, engage and interact with the environment. The design also features spaces for community gatherings, performances and exhibitions, fostering a sense of community and social connection.”

Jarfazadeh, who is originally from Tehran, Iran, said she was inspired by living and working in Boston last summer while interning with Bergmeyer. There, she had the opportunity to meet students and graduates from various schools, including Harvard and MIT.

“Even though they were not working in design, they expressed a desire for art and design to be a part of their lives,” she said. “This made me realize that there should be public spaces that enable people to express their creativity, regardless of their academic or professional background.”

Jafarzadeh said her design is not intended to be a standalone project, but rather “a continuation of Olmsted's legacy in creating public spaces that promote physical and mental well-being, community engagement and environmental sustainability. It serves as a model for other cities around the world, showcasing the potential of blending tradition and innovation in public space design.”

Also known as the Boston Public Garden, the Public Garden was the first public botanical garden in America. DK Osseo-Asare , assistant professor of architecture and the master of architecture thesis instructor, commended Jafarzadeh for completing a historic project with contemporary relevance.

“Aysan used a compelling approach to address a project with significant historic importance and offered a thorough, developed and mature arrangement of spaces,” said Osseo-Asare. “Her project was a complex, well-executed demonstration of mature self-direction.”

Elliott Brau earned an honorable mention for his capstone project titled, “Isla Mundo,” which explores the climate crisis by presenting an architectural prototype that uses renewable materials, low impact design and resilient form.

This year's Haider award jury was comprised of Landon Brown, founding principal of Onland Architecture and a visiting assistant professor at the Pratt Institute; Ashley Heeren, a registered architect in the state of Texas with a focus on public-spirited projects that prioritize sustainable place-making and celebrate local ecologies; and Dan Spiegel, founding partner of Spiegel Aihara Workshop, an architecture, landscape and urban design firm based in California, and a lecturer in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley.

The Haider award recognizes the most deserving master of architecture student for excellence in design, based on their culminating project/thesis. The award recipient is chosen by the head of the Department of Architecture upon recommendation by the faculty and the jury.

Now in its fourth year, the Haider Award for Design Excellence was established in honor of the late Jawaid Haider, a long-time architecture professor at Penn State who died in 2018, with support from his family, friends and colleagues.

Jafarzadeh said winning the Haider award is a validation of the effort, time and dedication that was put into the work, and it serves as a “confirmation of the quality of the work done.”

“It gives me hope that I am walking in the right path, especially having earned the confirmation of such an accomplished and successful jury that were deciding the winner,” she said.

Urban Design and Development of a Public Space at the City of Kitchener’s Intermodal Transit Hub

This thesis uses a case study approach at the proposed Transit Hub for the City of Kitchener to focus on opportunities for a high quality public space/square to better integrate a new LRT line and a new GO/VIA rail station into the surrounding city. The conceptual framework of this thesis is to create a public space at Kitchener transit hub in order to transform the space into a new interface where people can experience a fulfilling urban life. This design proposal seeks to create an intimate relationship between public life, infrastructure and people. In addition, this proposal envisions a series of diagrams of the Edward T. Hall’s Proxemics strategy, a non-contact communication, to experiment with the adequacy of all the defined spaces.

Within the city of Kitchener, much has already been done to establish the presence of urban design at the human scale, to integrate contemporary ideas into the design of buildings, and to enhance historic natural retreats like Victoria Park. However, little has been done to integrate the expanded opportunities for new design of work and living opportunities in the city center with the proposal of a new intermodal transit hub in the heart of that growing downtown core.

The combination of both of those aspects will look at how to create a healthy, people-oriented public environment that will also transfer people from one mode of transit to another. With the surrounding new mixed-use developments and the heritage architecture of Kitchener’s industrial past, the case study demonstrates the typical situation facing most urban centres undertaking transit expansion in Ontario.

Open segments revisits the courtyard house typology.

Reimagining the traditional courtyard house typology for the public realm, syn architects’ Open Segments presents a cluster of volumes evoking the essence of Najdi architecture. The pavilion unveiled at Concéntrico 10 fosters small-scale interactions, investigating elements of space-making and Arab spatial culture, embracing privacy while encouraging communal Majlis gatherings. Wrapped in wooden columns and fabric produced from regional flora and fauna, it creates an interplay of translucent fragments and openings that invite exploration and play.

syn architects cites collective memory of space at Concéntrico

Open Segments recalls the rectilinear forms of the courtyard house which forms the basic unit of the traditional built environment in Saudi Arabia’s Najd region, typically grouped in clusters or small neighborhoods. Riyadh-based syn architects have employed a modular construction system, vertically laying a series of planks along the perimeter of the space, held together by a mesh material. The continuous repetition of the spine wall is broken by various openings along two adjacent facades which softly filter in sunlight while creating future interpretations and preserving the essence of the traditional architectural language.

Additionally, the continuity and morphology of these spaces in the context of Concéntrico cite the collective memory of space, resulting in various physical and intangible narratives. Its configuration showcases the flexibility and sequences of fragmentation and continuity of the native architectural and social structures. Following the festival, the pavilion will be dismantled, its fabric components repurposed to extend their life cycle.

Concéntrico returned to Logroño, Spain, for its tenth edition from April 25th to May 1st, envisioning the future of cities and the lessons learned about urban processes — from incorporating new formats to integrating publics, and facing challenges that explore time as a factor of change in urban and social design.
