Your responsibilities.
- Development and implementation of a PhD-research project that aligns with the above research themes, including extensive fieldwork periods;
- Participation in the organization and realisation of project workshops and conference sessions;
- Presentation of research results at conferences and in publications;
- Collaboration in teaching and administration of the research group.
Your profile
- Very good Master's degree in human geography, sociology, planning or urban studies, or a related social science discipline;
- Knowledge of qualitative methods of empirical social research (e.g. qualitative interviews, focus groups, ethnographic methods, document analysis, etc.);
- Very good written and spoken Spanish and English skills are an essential requirement; joy in academic writing;
- Ability to work independently and strong social skills for collaborative teamwork; willingness to work with community partners.

We live in an urban and urbanizing society. Cities and dense regions are places where transformations such as climate change, economic globalization, settlement expansions, migration, or digitization manifest themselves first and most clearly. In this lecture, we study how cities plan for and react to these global transformations.

Spatial Development and Urban Policy (SPUR)
We aim to contribute to sustainable, democratic and just urban development through research and teaching. We enhance the understanding of and develop possible solutions for policy and planning challenges that emerge in urbanized regions globally. We are an interdisciplinary group working at the intersection of public policy, planning and urban studies.
Our fields of research are:

We teach three courses in the master program Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems.
We also supervise master theses, project work, and bachelor theses.

New publication on densification around train stations.
Elena Lutz, Michael Wicki, and David Kaufmann recently published a new article in Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science . The article examines the effects of densification on the socioeconomic population composition around train stations in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. They find that replacement construction increases inequality in access to housing and public transit.
