The basic level covers touch typing skills and introduction to the QWERTY keyboard. At the intermediate level, students learn to type basic words and simple sentences. The final advanced level progresses kids to more complex sentences and short paragraphs, all the while building solid typing skills. The program is comprehensive enough to ensure typing mastery and user friendly so your child can develop at an individualized pace.

Build On, Gear Up, and Test for Mastery of Common Core Subjects

With Turtle Diary, we’ve done the hard work for you. Common Core Standards used in their classrooms will be reinforced with our games, lessons, and quizzes.

All of the fun we offer on our site is aligned with the newer vision of mathematics and other subjects. By sticking with Turtle Diary, you can let us handle the hard work of explaining Common Core. Sometimes this method may seem foreign to you if you’ve learned with “old math.” In fact, you might just learn along with your student!

Students have the necessary skills to be able to compete in a competitive world with an increased focus on STEM. Cognitive demand reigns higher than rote learning, and students are able to quickly visualize and manipulate numbers. They can “see” the inner workings of the problems, especially in math, and learn to mentally work the numbers.

Turtle Diary helps students to learn and practice these concepts, especially if they aren’t quite grasping it in the classroom. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your student picks up the new concepts. Just remember that they’ve never learned it the “old” way. The Common Core way is THE way for their learning journey.

Get Access to Unlimited Fun and Learning for Free

24/7 access to great games while still building a foundation for learning? Welcome to Turtle Diary, where you can have it all! Edutainment at its finest is alive and well here.

Students can access our platform from wherever they go on whatever device they have. All you need is an internet connection.

Turtle Diary offers students amazing graphics, sounds, and intense gaming. This allows students a chance to breathe while learning in a stress-free environment.

With new games being added all the time, your student will never get bored with Turtle Diary. And since our games align with Common Core, the more they play, the more they’ll learn. The more they learn, the better their classroom experience will be because the information will click with repeated exposure.

Even though there may seem to be an overwhelming amount of games, the idea is to give students the choice. All of the games in a grade level reinforce the same necessary concepts, but just in a different way. Students will be practicing the same ideas over and over again as they choose from one fun game to another. We dare them to be bored!

Totally Homework

By Eugenie Allen

  • Dec. 1, 1998

TARRYTOWN, N.Y.— If you have a child of a certain age say, old enough to need a dictionary but not old enough to go out and buy it herself -- the big news out of Ann Arbor, Mich., a few weeks ago was no news at all. According to a University of Michigan study, children have a lot less free time than they used to. You could have produced the same data from your kitchen table, where you preside over one of the chief culprits identified in the study: endless homework.

Gone are the early, easy years, when your child gathered autumn leaves for show and tell and still had time to work a jigsaw puzzle before bedtime. Gone, too, are the days of your youth, when homework was something children did by themselves, no questions asked. Your 9-year-old needs your help.

She must coax 20 spelling words per week into scintillating sentences. She has to master three-digit multiplication and long division, pronto. She's up until nearly 11 P.M. at least once a week, fashioning a wigwam out of an old leather slipper or searching for algae in filthy water scooped from a backyard puddle.

Any of these assignments alone might be manageable, but the message seems to be volume, volume, volume. Once you pile on music lessons, organized sports and household chores, you have the stressed-out specimen observed in the Michigan study.

You're suffering, too. After you've checked spelling and math, it's time for that night's Internet search. (You can't allow solo surfing since an unfortunate incident two years ago, when running ''circus'' and ''pony'' together through Yahoo led to a porn site.) You idly consider home schooling.

You discover that the increased demands on parents are no accident: your first grader's teacher explains that she often uses language-arts homework to guarantee that families do at least some reading together. You don't let on that you can't go much beyond the minimum, because while you're helping your fourth grader with her homework, the first grader often turns on the television. Your toddler watches, too.

You begin to view homework as just another intrusion into everyone's overscheduled, late-late-20th-century lives. Parents everywhere pick up their children from day care and their dinner from McDonald's so they can rush home and start counting pennies for a math project. Why can't they do a little dancing in the living room instead?

Educators say they're setting high standards, but how can your child do her best creative writing, for instance, when she must also contend with a series of dull work sheets? They say that homework helps prepare children for the new state mandates, but you have yet to see a standardized test that measures diorama-building ability. You wish some academic would argue the importance of staring out the window, or listening to music for pure pleasure, or throwing a ball around without a uniform or a team or a score.

Worried, you visit your child's school. You are dazzled by her teachers' creativity and commitment, by the children's high spirits and their terrific in-class writing. You wonder why the magical scene in the classroom bears so little resemblance to the nightly grind at your house.

You dimly recall the results of another study you read about some months ago, which found little correlation between the amount of homework and school performance in the elementary grades. You talk it up among friends and find that they, too, feel oppressed. You imagine storming the next board of ed meeting and demanding a referendum on homework in your school district. You realize it's time to stop obsessing.

You head down the hall one Sunday night to remind your daughter to finish a book report. You see that she's on the floor of her room, her back to you, singing while she arranges dolls on plastic horses. You wonder if playing is an acceptable alternative to doing a bang-up job on the book report. You decide that it is, and you walk away.

ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ and ‘First Take’ totally ignored two NBA playoff games

The NBA had three playoff games on Tuesday. ESPN's morning block only discussed one of them.

ESPN Get Up First Take

Look, I didn’t expect ESPN to provide wall to wall coverage of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Game 5 victory over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. And I’d be lying if I said I did anything more than check the final score of the Milwaukee Bucks’ win over the Indiana Pacers in their own Game 5.

But while I fully anticipated the New York Knicks’ collapse against the Philadelphia 76ers would dominate ESPN’s airwaves on Wednesday morning, I figured the Cavs and Bucks’ postseason wins would at least be mentioned. Maybe not even as a full segment or debate topic. But at a minimum the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” — which is currently the NBA’s top media partner — would at least acknowledge that two non-Knicks/Sixers NBA postseason games took place on Tuesday night and what their outcomes were.

But if you tuned into ESPN’s morning block of Get Up and First Take on Wednesday morning without any prior knowledge of the NBA’s postseason schedule, you likely would have assumed that Game 5 between the Knicks and Sixers was the only playoff game played the prior night. Over the course of the four-hour block, neither show discussed either the Cavs vs. Magic or Bucks vs. Pacers games, with the only mentions of either coming indirectly.

Predictably, both shows led with the Knicks’ heartbreaking defeat to the 76ers, which saw New York blow a six-point lead with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation. But after exclusively covering Knicks-Sixers throughout the first 45 minutes of the show — which included Mike Greenberg repeatedly suggesting that Tyrese Maxey could become the new face of the NBA — the the 8 a.m. hour of Get Up proceeded with a segment in which NFL analysts Louis Riddick and Jeff Darlington answered questions such as “can the Bears win the NFC North with Caleb Williams in 2024?” and “can Xavier Worthy fill Tyreek Hill’s shoes with the Chiefs?”

(The Chiefs have won two Super Bowls since trading Hill to the Miami Dolphins in 2022. But alas.)

The 9 a.m. hour of Get Up was more of the same, although the show only spent its first 20 minutes discussing Knicks-Sixers before getting back to questions about the 2024 NFL season, which is more than four months away. The first reference to either of the other two NBA playoff games that were played on Tuesday night came at 9:55 a.m. ET, when Brian Windhorst noted that the Cavs and Magic series will likely go seven games in reference to a question regarding Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis’ calf injury.

Windhorst with the first mention of Cavs-Magic at 9:55 ET (in reference to what Porzingis' injury means for the Celtics). — Ben Axelrod (@BenAxelrod) May 1, 2024

First Take was predictably also Knicks-Sixers centric, with much of the focus on Stephen A. Smith’s reaction to his favorite basketball team’s collapse. Over the course of the show’s two hours, it did manage to tackle other topics, including Kevin Durant’s future in Phoenix and the age old question of “ how do baseball players get injured ?” But like Get Up , First Take made only a single indirect reference to a non-Knicks/Sixers playoff game, which again came during a discussion about Porzingis’ injury.

For what it’s worth, both the Cavs-Magic and Bucks-Pacers games were covered during the 7 a.m. ET SportsCenter and again, I don’t think anyone expected either game to be covered extensively on Get Up or First Take . Still, considering that network is the NBA’s top media partner, it was somewhat jarring to see Awful Announcing have more coverage of an NBA Playoff game — which happened to be pretty exciting — than ESPN’s morning block did.

People Are Sharing Things That Were Totally Normal To Have Or Do 10 Years Ago, But Would Be Strange Today

RIP to the days of running out to Best Buy on Tuesdays because you needed the newest DVD.

Brian Galindo

BuzzFeed Staff

Technology and trends move so quickly sometimes that we might not even notice when we stop using certain apps or stop doing once normal things like renting a movie from the video store.

Hilary Duff holding a CD player

And recently, Reddit user Oliver_OB brought up that very topic when they asked : "What existed 10 years ago but is gone or obsolete now?"

Well, lots of people responded — or is reminisced the better word () — to the thread with things that were common just 10 years ago, but totally out of date or completely gone today. here are some of the top and best comments:.

Vine app

"REST IN PEACE.

TIKTOK WAS NOT A GOOD REPLACEMENT."

— signaturefox2013

"Me: Vine wasn't around 10 years ago, you idiot!

...Googles when Vine came out, 2012...

Me: ...fuck."

2. "Every movie being shown in 3D."

"The Amazing Spider-Man"

— Apprehensive_Duck874

3. "How about AIM. I used that until Skype bought them out in... 2016? Then, Microsoft made it unusable to make people switch to Skype."

AIM

— TheDarkDoctor17

"You used AIM until 2016? Bro, are you in some kind of time dilation bubble?"

— 4tehlulzez

"What the fuck is a Skype? Is it like Discord or something?"

— straightouttasuburb

4. "Single-topic blogs. Remember those? Regretsy, Stuff White People Like, Cake Wrecks, People of Walmart, FML, Look at This Fucking Hipster, Shit My Dad Says, Awkward Family Photos, etc. Those things were everywhere from about 2007-'13, and then just sort of went away, though some live on, in a way, as subreddits now."

"Stuff White People Like"

— Dahhhkness

"Autocorrect Fails were my favorites until they started manufacturing them on meme sites."

— __Sassafrass__

5. "Good free apps/apps that you only had to pay once for."

A drinking app

— riwoni4997

"As an app creator, I can tell you that the old 'pay once use forever' model is totally broken with the modern mobile development. It’s literally unsustainable with the saturation and marketing costs.

I made a journaling app that was 'pay once use forever' that did cost, like, 5€, but I moved it into a free app with subscription for optional content and advanced features because I cannot both keep working on it and spending money on marketing."

6. "BlackBerry phones."

BlackBerry phone

— Blertyblertyblerrrr

"I’m glad you said that. I was watching Cash Cab this morning, and they said you could play on your smart phone and showed a BlackBerry as the smart phone. I almost died laughing (it was an old episode; I don’t even think they make the show anymore)."

"BlackBerry phones. That shit looked like alien technology to me."

— youraverageguy333

7. "Netflix streaming that had everything in one fucking goddamn place."

Netflix Recently Watched

"I miss the old Netflix. They had an awesome catalog and some great, low-budget, terrible movies."

8. "Windows Phone. As an early adopter, I was forever left behind by the superior apps that were on Android and iOS, despite liking the phone itself. I hoped it would catch up, but it never did. :("

Windows phone

— Adventurous-Touch876

"I was on Windows Phone and WebOS. Cries in dead operating systems."

9. "Those stores that would sell items for you on eBay. You would bring the item to them, and they would take care of posting it on the site and shipping it. I don't see those anymore."

16. "iPods (I know Apple still sells the touch, but I don't count it)."

"MP3 players. Not software, but the hardware...like the portable ones."

17. "There was a lot of Tumblr porn online."

— ThomasMMartin

"Tumblr porn, so much Tumblr porn."

18. And lastly: "Honestly, nowadays, because of streaming and stuff, I gotta say DVDs. They are becoming kinda obsolete."

Someone holding a stack of DVDs

— Ill_Blackberry_9012

"Are becoming? They've been obsolete for quite some time."

"Physical media. I freaking love DVDs and especially Blu-rays. The quality just isn't the same with streaming. It's a shame 4K Blu-ray will be the last physical media ever. It's the end of the line."
